Making Hadleigh A ‘Batty’ Neighbourhood
Bats need looking after so it’s great that HEAT has set up a Bat Group in Hadleigh. Bats are fascinating creatures. They are the only mammals that fly and are more closely related to humans than they are to mice. As mammals, bats give birth to live young that feed on their mother’s milk. They have only one baby a year and can live up to 30 years. Bats hunt insects in the dark using echolocation. Our commonest species, the tiny pipistrelle, can fit in a matchbox, weighs only 4-6 gms and eats more than 3,000 tiny insects in a night. They are found in wetlands, woodlands, farmland, as well as urban areas and can only really be seen at dusk. You may have glimpsed bats swooping down catching insects on a summer evening. There are 17 bat species in the UK and they make up a third of all mammal species. By the way bats are not rodents and don’t nibble on wood, wires and other bits and pieces in buildings.
Bats are a vital part of our native wildlife and the ecology of the natural world. They tell us a lot about the state of the environment as they are sensitive to habitat destruction and the loss of nocturnal insects caused by humans. The pressures they face - such as landscape change, agricultural intensification, housing development, and habitat fragmentation are also relevant to many other wildlife species, making them excellent indicators for the wider health of the UK's wildlife, which is why we should be taking care of them.
HEAT, with the support of Benton End, has set up Hadleigh Bat Group with the goal of improving the environment for bats in Hadleigh. We have made a start by learning about bats from Suffolk Bat Group and building bat boxes to put up at Benton End and around Hadleigh. We will use detectors to survey bats in Hadleigh and put up more boxes as well as providing information so everyone can help look after bats by encouraging insects and creating roosts. How you can help bats:
•Lay on a banquet for bats and encourage flying insects by growing climbing plants, shrubs and flowers for pollinators.
•Have a pond or marshy area to support aquatic larvae such as small flies
•Allow a patch of lawn to grow long as a habitat for insect larvae
•Avoid using pesticides and encourage natural predators
•Reduce your light pollution – turn off garden lighting or dim security lights as these affect when bats emerge at night
Find out more about these ‘stars of the night’ and what you can do to help them on this RHS website www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk/WildAboutGardens
If you want to know more about Hadleigh Bat Group, contact HEAT via email on hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com and check out our website www.hadleighheat.org
Layham Community Orchard
It was great to see so many turn up for the initial planting of Layham Community Orchard last month.
The orchard has been made possible by the generous offer of use of the land by Glenda and Ed Hall, grants from the British Tree Council ,Woodland Trust ,donated trees from Teddy and Peter Goldby and of course the volunteers who turned out to do the graft particularly all our young friends.
More information about the orchard will be posted on Layham Community Orchard Facebook page and in the Community News.

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk
Alan and Beryl Meredith invite you to join them on the Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk in memory of their late son who loved walking. The 5½ mile walk will start at Boxford Health Centre and end at its counterpart in Hadleigh. There is no signing up or joining fee but it is hoped that walkers will make a donation to the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre Charitable Trust instead. The collection is to show the family’s appreciation for the care and support the Practice gave Gareth during his many years of ill health.
It is important to emphasise that this is not a competitive event but rather an opportunity to remember Gareth and or just enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the beautiful countryside between Boxford and Hadleigh. Families and well behaved dogs (on the lead) are most welcome. The route will be clearly marked. Walkers will be expected to make their own way to the Boxford Health Centre where parking is limited. Participants walk at their own risk and will be expected to respect the countryside along the way. Comfort facilities will be available at the Hadleigh Health Centre.
If you have any queries about the walk please contact
Alan Meredith01473 822 433 or alan.k.meredith@btinternet.com
Hadleigh Art Club
We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon.
Annual membership is £5 and is due in May. We have a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to do whatever you want.

HIDDEN GARDENS OF HADLEIGH 2023
Saturday 3rd June 11.00 — 17.00
£5 in advance
£6 on the day
Once the busy run up to Christmas is behind us, we anticipate the months leading to Spring to be quieter, giving time to reflect on the year past and plan for the one ahead. This is another enjoyable part of running the Gallery. So, what have we been doing?
Inevitably we have had to give a few exhibitors a rest for a while, to return another day maybe. New artists and makers have been introduced. With some 50 contributors from East Anglia we are limiting any external candidates to one guest per genre. One of these is a potter from near the North Kent marshes, with her beautiful, nature-inspired ceramics. Adding to our portfolio are a stunning photographer, two artists, one using linocut, the other focussing on the declining Suffolk Punch Horse. In addition, we have two new silversmiths and a limestone sculptor.
We have met all of our regular patrons to ensure that stock is refreshed, minimising any suggestion of stagnation. Some styles stand the test of time so we tend to retain those, still encouraging our contributors to adapt…different poses, varying expressions, alternative settings. We have several collectors. Exhibits have been moved around so that work can be viewed from different perspectives. We have been frequently adding posts on Social Media and our website, with its live shop, more extensively reflects the majority of what is available.
What are we aiming for? To provide good quality, affordable art supporting local talent, with East Anglia having many that fit that description. There is a distinct wildlife and natural theme. We have been told that some pieces simply make customers smile, which pleases us. All exhibits are displayed in a spacious, calming environment offering somewhere to escape and immerse oneself in other worlds.
Suzanne and John welcome you to join us on the Bridge Farm Barns complex at Monks Eleigh, where we present our unique showcase of local art, ceramics, woodturning, glass, photography, jewellery, homeware and sculptures. Our extensive card selection also reflects the standards of our exhibitors.

Picture Of The Month Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep
St. Mary’s Church, and specifically its fine and unusual lead covered spire dominate this late 1950s view. In the foreground and built within the grounds of Toppesfield Hall, is a much newer building, being the new Hadleigh Fire Station and built in 1957 to a design and in red brick, from a standard layout as used by the West Suffolk County Council. This station served the town well for many years until a new station was built in Calais Street during 2009 and which was officially opened the following year in July and having the status of a retained station.
In the same year the former fire station was concerted into the Mill Pharmacy and celebrated its first anniversary in November 2010.
The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council. The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers look after the Hadleigh Archive and meet on a regular basis to catalogue and transcribe it large number of documents and images.

Roll on summer and a floaty dress!
Spring, is most certainly underway as the hedgerows and trees start to burst with their vivid green colours and the grass on my lawn is starting to look more lush! Roll on summer, eh? As the seasons change, so we at Corn Craft make our changes too. Our gorgeous summer clothes are now out in the gift shop, and I for one, can’t wait to foldaway the jumpers and put on a lovely floaty dress or a summer top. Ladies, if you haven’t visited us before, please do consider coming over to take a look at our clothes. We are currently stocking Lily & Me, Adini and Alice Collins, as well as some one size clothing from Goose Island. We also offer a fantastic range of accessories, including Italian leather handbags in an array of summer colours, which you can co-ordinate with your favourite outfit, or if you simply just fancy a pop of colour. We do love colour at Corn Craft, and our beautiful summer scarves are available in a variety of lengths and widths, and these too can brighten up an outfit. A new season, also means a few changes will be appearing on our tea room menu. Our popular homemade Scotch Egg & Cheddar Ploughman’s has now returned, and our chef is working on a couple of other tasty summer dishes, which I can’t wait for! Warmer days also mean ‘al fresco dining’ and our terrace is a lovely suntrap!
If you haven’t been to Corn Craft before, you may wonder if we are just a place with ‘crafts made out of corn’. Well, our heritage maybe in corn dollies, but today we are a beautiful gift shop and a homely tea room, nestled in the pretty village of Monks Eleigh. We’ve been trading for over 32 years and are based on the “Bridge Farm Barns” site where, there are six other wonderful independent businesses, making us a great destination for a trip out. Why not come on over and say hello - we’d love to see you.

Fantastic start for young cyclists
Hadleigh Cycling Club’s Go-Ride Race Day on 14th April was attended by 40 young riders, aged 4 - 13. Some riders even travelled from Earls Colne and Bury St. Edmunds. The coaching team ran sessions across several ability groups in the morning to help the children to improve on core cycling techniques, followed by an afternoon of mini races. The young riders left with smiles on their faces, British Cycling goodies, some even walked away with medals for their racing!
“We were truly delighted to have so many kids joining us for our season kickoff event. The Go-Ride Race Day was the catalyst to restart properly after the pandemic, it helps the club to re-engage the youngsters in our community, with opportunities to get started with their cycling journey as well as a channel into the sport.”, says Benson, the club’s secretary and coach. “We founded the club back in 2012 as a London Games legacy project to provide coaching opportunities for youngsters in our little market town and neighbouring villages. We’ve had 100s of youngsters through our regular coaching sessions and events over the years with handfuls of them competing across the cycling disciplines including MTB XC, Cyclocross, TT, Track, Road/Crit. Some of them have won regional titles, competed at National level events, as well as joining semi-professional teams”.
Crockatt Garage supported the Go-Ride Day by equipping young riders with a special edition of HCC t-shirts. Simon and David Foster, owners of Crockatt Garage, are keen cyclists and they have been great sponsors for a long time, providing support vehicles for annual Gayford Flyer sportive. Simon and David established their business back in 2011 at Seager Court in Hadleigh. They have over 50 years of experience in the industry between them, having worked in all aspects of the trade at several dealerships.
The HCC Junior Club is running weekly Tuesday at Hadleigh Community Primary School, between 18:30-19:30 from 18th April to the end of the Summer. To find out more go to the Club’s website.
The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Fridays (women). The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk.

We'll tell you about our current rehearsals for the upcoming summer concert on 17th June, as well as the programme we are all excited about for the fall. Are you kind enough to yourself?
If you get annoyed with yourself when you drop something or forget a little thing in your day, try noticing the thoughts you have. If you find yourself thinking or saying, ‘I’m so stupid, why can’t I just get it right,’ or something similar, you are being self-critical. Would you say the same to a friend, or a colleague? We often treat ourselves more harshly than we treat others, which leads to feeling negative about our ability, how we look, what we’re doing at work or school, and a multitude of other things. Instead of feeling ‘good enough’ we only notice our mistakes and our flaws – which are part of being human.
If you saw a child following another child around all day, and you kept hearing one tell the other, ‘You’re stupid,’ ‘you can’t do that,’ ‘your clothes are all wrong,’ ‘you’re ugly’ – what would you think? You would probably feel sad for the child who’s being bullied. You may remind them of the things they are good at, you would compliment them and highlight positive things. But it’s hard to do the same for you. It’s easier to stay with the habit of self-critic – like being your own bully.
If this resonates with you and you’d like support to change the way you think and feel about yourself, I can help you develop your emotional toolkit, so you’re as kind to you as you are to others.

RITA HOYLE
20th November 1967 –1st November 2022
Last year my wonderful wife, friend and Sam’s and Ben’s mother tragically passed away after a 4-year battle with cancer.
The funeral at St Mary’s Church was an overwhelming tribute to Rita attended by the family, ex work colleagues from Lloyds Bank and Hadleigh Community Primary school and friends in abundance. Rita’s tribute page https://ritahoyle.muchloved.com has been blessed with £3,971.25 in donations and Val Gladwell completed a triathlon last September raising a further £815. These funds have gone to the Chemotherapy Day Unit at the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind donations made in Rita’s memory, it has meant a great deal to us and will help many others receiving much needed treatment. We have decided to continue the fundraising and seek your much appreciated support.
Many of you know that Rita was partial to the occasional clothes spending foray at Kitty & Em’s. As the nurses said when I visited the Day Unit, “Rita was always so well turned out…” and indeed she was for each of her 82 chemotherapy sessions always so wonderfully cared for by the staff in the Unit.
So, Kitty and Em plan to open on Sunday 11th June to raise funds for Rita’s chosen charity – The Day Unit. The day will comprise of:
10amOpen for business
11amOpening of ‘Rita’s Room’ – one of the shop rooms to be dedicated in memory of Rita.
1pmRaffle Draw
4pmEnd
Kitty and Em will be having a preloved sale rail on the day where you can pick up some amazing bargains for just £10 an item and all proceeds will go to the charity. Many items will be donated by Kitty and Em and you may recognise some of Rita’s ‘collection’!
Do you have any preloved items from Kitty & Em or others that you would like to donate? If you do, just drop them into the shop – Kitty and Em are welcoming donations and please know if you do you will be contributing towards a wonderful team at the Day Unit.
•New season stock – 50% of profits to be donated.
•A pre-loved rail – all sales will be donated.
•Cake sale
We plan to offer vouchers for teas and coffees from Huffers with every purchase. Sweet Memories are donating 50% of profits on the day to the cause. A raffle is being organised and tickets will be available from May onwards from Kitty & Em, Sweet Memories, shops displaying a flyer, various friends and me. My thanks to Hadleigh United Football Club for their support with this.
Prizes so far are: Dinner for two at a local restaurant, Bianca Elgar silk scarf; sterling silver fountain pen from The Shakespeare Pen Company, £60 nail voucher, three night stay at Long Barn Holiday Home (sleeps 6) in Wrentham, Personalised children’s name painting, Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser, Stackers Three Tier Jewellery Box, Fork Cookery Masterclass Voucher for two including lunch and wine, half case (6 bottles) of Rita’s favourite Sauvignon Blanc, 30 day membership at Thrive Gyms, £100 Kitty & Em Voucher, Harrods Shortbread and Chocolate Almonds plus any more we can get.
We would very much welcome further donations for raffle prizes, Cakes made or bought, or Volunteers to help on the day.

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh
Spring has arrived I hear you say! Well it’s better than winter and we are already seeing our customers relaxing in our garden. Remember, it is bigger than before and although we won’t have our full compliment of flowers until later in the year, its still a great place to chill and sup your favourite tipple. We have a great month of live music for you during May but just making a mention of Rob Lewis coming back on Sunday 30th May for your early readers. Rob is great and he will be with us from 3pm till 6pm. On Saturday 6th we have the inaugural gig with SKA Town Syndicate. They played here before though it was a bit of a private function. These guys are super so we called them back for more, realizing that many of our locals had not had the chance to hear them performing. Saturday 13th sees the Irish folk/pop/rock band Great Craic making an appearance. If you love the Pogues you’ll love these guys too. Paul Gee will be with us on Sunday afternoon on the 21st and a super band called Buzz will gig with us on Saturday 27th playing many of your favourites from the 60’s through to the late 90’s. Our Sunday music starts at 3pm and Saturday nights around 8.30pm.
Please remember too that we have a Buskers night every first Tuesday of the month and all are welcome. You can sing, play an instrument, recite poetry. Its an acoustic evening to enjoy, even if you just come along and listen. Every second Tuesday we hold our Quiz Night and the third Tuesday each month is an Open Mic evening hosted by Bear Witch. All Tuesday night events start at 8pm.
There are three F1 Grand Prixs and of course the Azerbaijan race on the 30th April. Of course the Miami GP is at 8.30pm on Sunday 7th but both the Imola GP on Sunday 21st and Monaco GP on Sunday 28th May both start at 2pm. Happy racing. We always show the GP’s live at the pub so come along and join in.
The Premier League will finish later this year as a consequence of the World Cup at the end of 2022. Final matches will take place on Sunday 28th and all will kick off at 4.30pm. Arsenal are at home to Wolves and Man City are away at Brentford. I think City will sneak it but how do I know. I fancy Newcastle and Man Utd to join them in the Champions League places but it’s a strange season. Its still overheating at the bottom with any three from nine facing the drop! For the Euro footy fans we have the Europa League Cup Final on Wednesday 31st May from Budapest. At the time of writing Man Utd are still in it. Don’t get this confused with the Europa Conference Final which has its final on June 7th. West Ham are still in this one too. A diary date for the Champions League Final. Its Saturday June 10th, live from Istanbul at 8pm. Rugby Union fans have the Killik Cup to look forward to on Sunday 28th May. Steve Hansen is putting a World 15 together including the Aussie pair Marika Koroibete and Nick Phipps. The Baa baas are headed up by Eddie Jones with Kingsley Jones as his Assistant with Jack Nowell and Johnny May set to play along with Dan Cole and Sam Simmonds, though the RU Premiership Final takes place the day prior at Twickenham.
The Summer Dixon Dart League has commenced and we trust that it will be as competitive as the Winter League. The Cock Inn has three teams taking part once again, including the Winter Champs The Kracken. The Hadleigh British Legion and The George are also in the mix so we can expect more news next month. However, congratulations to the Cock for reaching the final of the Specflue Ltd Sudbury & District Bar Billiards Knock Out Final. The big day is slated for May 4th, so more news in the June edition. If you never had a bash at bar Billiards why not come and give it a go. It’s a skillful game but great fun too. Plenty of customers here will help you along the way and you may end up in the team. Happy days!
Don’t forget we have three separate sky boxes so we can show three different events at the same time. We also have a giant screen too for those special events.

By the time you read this, the cricket season will (hopefully!) be well under way at HCC. The much anticipated opening weekend saw our league games cancelled after a deluge of rain left many grounds waterlogged - in fact in eight divisions of the Two Counties league, only five matches went ahead as scheduled. We didn’t let that dampen our spirits though, and welcomed a number of our valued club sponsors to the pavilion to showcase the new deck area and to toast the 2023 season. In the absence of cricket, we broadcast the Grand National, with a sweepstake adding to the atmosphere.
With the Sunday Academy team waiting until early May to get their league campaign underway, they travelled to Chantry Park, home of IES Cricket Club for a preseason friendly. With blue skies and warm sunshine, the game was played on their astroturf pitch, and it was wonderful to finally hear the sound of leather on willow after 7 long months.
The team put in some promising performances with both bat and ball, resulting in a win - Hadleigh Academy 221-6 v IES 165 all out.
Going forward, we have home games every Saturday afternoon and most Sundays (weather permitting!). Follow our socials to keep up to dateFacebook: Hadleigh CC Social, Instagram: Hadleigh Cricket Club and Twitter @HadCC_Suffolk. Printed fixture cards will be available from the pavilion very soon. You don’t need to be a member or purchase a ticket to come and enjoy a game of cricketsimply come along, perhaps bring a picnic, and enjoy a couple of cold drinks from the bar for a low-cost family afternoon! Corks Lane play area is just a few steps away should the children get restless, and dogs are welcome too!
Off the field, we have our Silent Disco coming up on Saturday 13th May. Our social events are open to all members of the local community, and we would love to welcome you to the pavilion to show you some of our renowned hospitality!

Many thanks go to The Hadleigh Thrift Shop for donating £200 to our ladies Run / Walk / Run group to train an England Athletics Leader in Running Fitness (LIRF). Our group has grown from 6 ladies starting out on the very first Beginners Course in October 2021 to now nearly 40 on our books. It’s a free social group that meets at 8.30 on Saturday mornings to Jeff, (run / walk / run) and is totally inclusive for women of all ages and fitness levels, promoting physical and mental well-being as well as being a great place to meet and have fun and laughter. Every four weeks we finish our Jeff with coffee and breakfast at the wonderful Fork Deli which is quite literally the icing on the cake. We are grateful to Mrs Barbara Boyd and the Thrift Shop for recognising the benefits of Jeffing and how our group contributes to the health of women in the Hadleigh area. We are pleased to announce that Janine Edgar (above centre left) has just started her training to become a Run Leader funded by this donation.

A flying start for Toucan
What an exciting start to the year we have had at Toucan Financial Services Limited.
We have been blown away by your response to our launch and offer of services. It has been wonderful to speak to so many of you that were keen to seek help, refer friends and family or offer your support and feedback. It fills us with pride that we constantly hear that our down to earth, friendly and uncomplicated way of talking is what you have found most useful.
We are really keen to help anyone who has any questions about their pension planning, investments or life assurance needs, so please do get in touch.
With Mental Health Awareness Week 15-21st May, we feel it is important to mention how stressful money matters can be. We often hear clients saying they find dealing with money so difficult, especially when it comes from an inheritance, as it is associated with someone who is no longer with us. It can be a burden, but it can also be a solution and with the right planning can help ensure future financial stability too. Please reach out if this resonates with you.
Toucan Financial Services is open to service the needs of our clients in the Suffolk / Essex borders. Feel free to call for a no obligation chat about how we might be able to help and support you and your family.
The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)
With the first quarter of the year behind us and the lighter nights fast approaching we should, hopefully, feel more like getting involved in various activities. Whether it be sociable or physical, both will contribute to your general well-being and subsequently your overall good health. The “What’s About Hadleigh” event in the town will provide a perfect opportunity to find a group that suits your needs and interests. The PPG will be there on Saturday 27th May from 10a.m to 2pm. in the Guildroom. We will be highlighting the many medical services which are available at the Practices (Hadleigh and Boxford) and also an easy peasy guide to booking appointments on line. The ongoing internal renovations continue to cause some disruption in the Practice car park. As there is no gain without pain you can be sure it will be wonderful when it’s all over.
On Sunday 16th July, the group will be welcoming walkers at the end of their 5 ½ mile walk, from the Boxford Practice to the Hadleigh Health Centre, in memory of the late Gareth Meredith. Further details elsewhere in this magazine.
Many patients collect repeat prescriptions from one of the town’s Pharmacies but how many check the contents of their package on receipt? As this medication cannot be re-issued once it has left the premises, your vigilance will greatly help reduce the currently, horrendously high level of medicine waste.
Have you got the NHS App yet? If not, check out how useful it could be offering you access to a mass of information and services. See website details below. This month, Gavin Young, one of our PPG members, who is also gainfully employed by the Ambulance Service will be passing on his valuable first aid skills to local Primary School pupils in Year 6. Hopefully, weather permitting, you will be able to enjoy the Coronation celebrations and the additional public holiday, in the great outdoors. We look forward to welcoming you to our stand on 27th May.

Christmas in June?
The Christmas Present Trust will be having a sale and awareness day on the 10th June at the Ansell Centre, between 10am and 4pm. We have a huge array of goods for sale, including CDs (remember them?), DVDs (the things before Netflix), kitchenalia, cards, books, ornaments, household goods, framed pictures and many more items. We will also be selling celebrity signed Christmas cards and other celebrity items. There will be sweet and savoury nibbles, tea, coffee and soft drinks as well. All profits raised will go to The Christmas Present Trust, which exists to provide a free meal and entertainment to anyone in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. The 10th June is also a chance to say a big thank you to all the wonderful people who have made this event possible over the last 8 years, whether as a guest, volunteer, fairy helpers or the many different roles that the people of Hadleigh have embraced. Come and celebrate with us – we have cake! We are now looking for a small group to take on the organisation and running of this event. Since we started in 2015 it has been primarily organised by the two of us, with the able assistance of volunteers over the Christmas period. To ensure that the event continues, we are looking for a small team to help out with fundraising, publicity, co-ordinating volunteers and drivers, cooking, and, most importantly, contacting those people who would like to be a part of it –either as volunteers or guests.
o m
Please come along on the 10th June and talk with us if you feel you can assist or want to know more, or you can contact us via email at christmas.present.trust@gmail.com or by phone 01473 829246.
We are delighted to be teaming up with Hadleigh Nursing Home, who have kindly agreed to sponsor this year’s entertainment, Hadleigh Cricket Club, who will be playing a special match to raise funds for the event, Toni at Little Ginger Bee who is collecting spare change in her wonderful shop and hopefully Men’s Shed – Hadleigh for some of the presents we give out to our guests. If you or your organisation want to get involved, please contact us at the above address/phone number, come along on the 10th June to see us, or come and see us at our stall at the What’s About Hadleigh at the Town Hall on Saturday May 27th.

French’s Care Haven
Hello to our readers, I hope you have all been keeping well. Our dog walk went well, we had nice people, some lovely dogs and no rain, what more can we ask. Dog walkers had soft drinks and cake at the farm and their dogs had some treats, so happy faces all around. I am looking forward to our team organising another dog walk in the year. Our Charity will be attending and having a stall at What’s about Hadleigh on Saturday 27th May in The Guildhall, which will be showcasing Hadleighs clubs, groups and societies. We have some more dates for your diary: On the 3rd June we will have a stand at Monks Eleigh fete and Frenchs will have our wonderful Open Day and BBQ on 17th June, where you can come and meet our donkeys, horses and ponies and our therapy dog Lucy, plus have some food a drink and enjoy the lovely environment our rescue animals live in.
On the 23rd June at Boxford village hall we have a Psychic Medium Evening, there should be some laughter and tears with a medium from Essex spiritual centre. Doors open at 6pm, Tickets for the event are £10. There will be a bar and raffle plus the chance to purchase 5 min tarot and pendulum. All proceeds will be given to French’s Care Haven, so we hope you can join us for a fun evening out. Please call Sharon on: 07999051401 or email Sharon: frenchs.100club@gmail.com
Some of our volunteers take a lead role in thinking of, putting together and attending our fund raising events, which I thank them all for and of course so do the rescued animals in our care.
In June our 100 club will re-start with tickets £30 a number, raffle ticket or tickets that you buy will last for a year, where there will be a raffle draw once a month with 3 prizes drawn each time, first prize is £50, so come on let’s get you in our monthly draw, please contact Sharon for your raffle tickets. Here in a photo we have University students at the farm with Annie and a photo of cheeky Lucy, who loves to sneak away with the volunteer’s gloves. When the students have any spare Saturday mornings free, they come to us and do some volunteer work, which is always a great help and a nice break away from the Uni course work for the students.
I am still drawing a blank when it comes to local volunteer help, this is for general help in the care and management of the animals and their surroundings and we also need a man who will help us with ground, fencing and shelter maintenance. I am saddened that no one has come forward, there are so many people out there who are semi-retired or retired, that surly have a couple of hours a week to spare to help such a worthy local Charity? Please contact me - Jann - if you can help.
French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment. Jann on: 07747 755556 or email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk

In April our speaker was Chris Wiley of Sow Successful. He is a young plantsman developing his own nursery and gave us an interesting talk on how he became interested in growing and cultivating different seeds. He now supplies big seed merchants and also sells his cut flowers to florists. The topic was mostly about his sweet peas..a bouquet of which was presented to the queen on what was to be her final visit to the Chelsea Flower Show. What a pleasure to have the sun at last..doesn’t it lift our mood. Everything is growing well with a promise of a fruitful summer. Due to the Coronation and bank holiday Monday our May meeting is once again a week later on 15 th May. Helen Chen will be giving us an insight into Asian Woodland Plants..so something exotic !
Do join us at 7.30 in the Guildhall. A relaxed evening with refreshments and a chat plus raffle. The competition is a vase of purple, blue and pink flowers. Happy gardening.

Our April meeting was a little different to normal, as we had a floral demonstration by some of our committee members. This is always a fun evening and enjoyed by all. Their title was “Childhood Memories” and we heard lots of funny tales and stories from their childhoods. All the arrangements were very different in their designs and very beautiful. Their memories were from family farming, home baking and to holidays in Scotland, which were interpreted in their designs. Our next meeting will be Tuesday 9th May 2023 and our demonstration will be held by Daphne Grant from St. Albans entitled “Forgotten Treasures”, Hadleigh United Reformed Church, arrival 7pm for 7.30pm start.
We still have tickets available for our Spring Luncheon at Monks Eleigh village hall, 12pm for 12.30pm. There will be a fashion show, stalls, and a raffle. We will be giving a donation from the event to The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic riding, which is a great local cause. If you are interested in coming along and would like a ticket, they are £17.50 and include a drink on arrival, a two-course lunch and tea/coffee, then please call Jenny on 01473 822971/07786 721807. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Hadleigh Walkers
Our walk on Saturday 13th May is a circular one starting and ending in Hintlesham. We will meet at the Hintlesham Community Centre on Timperley’s Road and depart at 0930. The route will proceed from the churchyard, through the golf course to Mill Fm, Hintlesham Park, Cottage Fm, Great Wood, Duke Street, Orchard Lea, Langlands Barn, Coles Green, Washbrook Church, Buckle’s Bridge and back into Hintlesham
The entire route is around 9 miles of fairly easy going and we should be back in Hintlesham around 1330. We will have two brief refreshment stops along the way. As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council
Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South
Suffolk Highways – Roadworks, Repairs and Projects Roadworks - At the time of writing, our roads networks have been subject to multiple concurrent major roadworks resulting in traffic movement issues. Adequate notice was given for the closure of Angel Street and the works on Magdalen Road with its temporary lights. However, after another light system was installed by works on the diversion route in George Street and a further hole was dug on The Green/Aldham Road junctions, I had to ask the Network Assurance department to confirm how this was being coordinated. I look forward to receiving their advice on this issue. Repairs - With the weather getting warmer and dryer, I would hope to see Suffolk Highways’ momentum increase with its repairing many thousands of potholes in Hadleigh and across the county. Also, there are many stretches where lines have faded or been eroded and need repainting. I am chasing as many of these as possible, but may I once again encourage readers and residents to report as necessary all highways faults using the council’s online reporting tool, or phone as below.
Duke Street Safety Project – I hope to see soon the installation of planned scheme designed to improve safety for pedestrians using the footway on Duke Street. The works will adjust the parking restrictions there and on Market Place giving more carriageway for Layham bound traffic. Their purpose is to prevent the frequent incursions onto the pavements of larger vehicles resulting in a hazard for footpath users. This project will be funded jointly from my SCC Local Highways Budget (LHB) and by the Town Council. I am grateful for their support and I will keep you appraised as this project develops.
Resurfacing – Many of our C-Class roads here and across Suffolk are in a poor state and are frequently reported on for having dangerous potholes. I am pursuing Highways to see what roads in the town can reasonably be expected to be resurfaced soon. I have been informed that stretches of Highlands Road will be done later this year, but many other roads need this attention also and I will do my best to see what can be achieved. This will be a challenge as, for example, the Duke Street junction by our library, is currently positioned at 12,033 out of 19,198 total records. Based on the current priorities across the whole county, Duke Street is not in SCC’s current planned carriageway works programme, a matter I will challenge.
Benton Street Safety Scheme
Evaluation – The traffic management safety scheme installed here 18-months ago should soon be evaluated to assess what level of improvements for safety it has achieved. I will be meeting with Highways officers to confirm how this will be carried out and whether any further measures need to be considered. Speed and vehicle behaviour surveys were carried out before and post installation to collect empirical data. Analysis of this information shows a [surprising] decrease in mean speeds along Benton Street and vehicle incursions on the footways have more than halved overall and by over 70% at the road’s narrowest points where this problem was most prevalent. The improved traffic flow has resulted in less congestion with its associated pollution of idling traffic, and the need for vehicles to divert up Station Road at speed past the Community Primary School to avoid hold-ups there. Councillor Surgery I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 20th May 2023 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street.
Should you need to speak to me, then please contact me at - email: mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk or mick.fraser@babergh.gov.uk; Tel: 0793 551 2591; or Facebook: @mickfraser4hadleigh, Twitter: @mick_fraser.

Hadleigh WI
April has been another busy month and we look forward to our activities in May as we welcome more new members. We will be holding our AGM this month when Sarah Thompson is giving us a talk about that wonderfully brave little boy Tony Hudgell who lost both his legs as a baby due to terrible cruelty but was motivated by Captain Tom to walk ten kilometres to raise money for the hospital that looked after him. He raised over one million pounds!
The talk in April by a volunteer from TWAM (Tools with a Mission) was illuminating about the terrific work they do in restoring tools and sending them to Africa. They also have a JustSew project sending sewing machines and materials to support starting up local self-supporting groups. They look for donations of cottons, materials, ribbons, knitting needles, wool, etc. and those button boxes. One of our members is a volunteer with TWAM and will ensure anything you give reaches the workshop in Ipswich Hadleigh Road Estate. Contact Sheila Webb and we will arrange for collection or receipt of anything you would like to give to support this wonderful organisation.
The popular Lunch Bunch will be getting together again, the Amblers had a great day out at Flatford Mill in April and look forward to meeting up at Arger
Fen to view that fantastic bluebell display. The Bookworms are reading The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan. One of the books we have read in the past is The Huntingfield Paintress and the three groups will be combining in June for a day out, including a talk in the church. Plans are afoot for a 'Posh 'Tea Party', trip on the River Orwell and booking (yes already) for the New Wolsey pantomime.
If you think you might like to join come along for a 'taster' evening. Contact either the secretary Glenn Abbassi on 07870 312409 or the president Sheila Webb on 01473 827554 and we will ensure we look out for you. We meet on the third Tuesday in the seminar room of the library at 7.30. Meeting in May is on the 16th .Due to the size of the meeting room we have to limit the membership number. Parish Council
The main matters discussed during the Parish Council meeting of 22 February 2023 were:
• Public Forum The applicant explained that a barn had been converted to temporary housing, following a previous successful planning application some years ago. He was now applying for change of use to a permanent dwelling for family members, separate from the main house.
• District Council Councillor Ward confirmed that the budget for 2023-24 had been agreed by both Cabinet and Council. Babergh and Mid Suffolk were exploring plans to consolidate three aging operational sites into a shared £12m depot; the existing depots would be sold. Photo ID would be required in order to vote in the elections on 4 May; anyone who had a problem with this should contact Babergh. Two initiatives had been developed aimed at helping young people to build their skills and experience: the Youth Enterprise Scheme, aimed at secondary school children and run in conjunction with West Suffolk, and MTG Local, a programme for young people not currently in education, employment or training.
• County Council SCC had awarded a new highways services contract to Milestone Infrastructure, with effect from 1 October 2023.
• Footpath along B1070 from Upper Layham to Hadleigh The Clerk had received an email from SCC saying the work scheduled to start in March had been postponed to the summer; however, it appeared that some work had already been carried out. She would chase a response to her request for a meeting with the contractors.
• Defibrillator for Stoke Road The Clerk had placed the order and was awaiting a delivery date. She confirmed that a grant of £500 had been received from Councillor Hall’s Locality Budget.
• Flooding in Church Lane It was noted that the drain had been cleared; The Clerk would thank Highways.

Architecture and Interior Design
Thurland, Sulleys Hill, Lower Raydon, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5QQ
• Local History Recorder’s report for 2022 The comprehensive report from Councillor Woods was noted.
• Sign for Cobblers Corner It was agreed unanimously to apply for a road sign saying ‘Cobblers Corner’, which would help to identify the location of the new defibrillator on Stoke Road. It was noted that the Parish Council would be responsible for the cost.
• Dog refuse bin The Clerk had arranged for a new wooden post to be installed to support the dog refuse bin outside The Queen’s Head.

Layham Spring Clean Thank you to the 20 volunteers who helped on and around 18th March. We were pleased to find very little litter on the lanes in the village but disappointed to see more on the verges of the main roads leading in to Layham and to have to pick up dog waste from the playing field. Volunteers also made a big difference working on Brett Green and cleaning road signs. Thank you to all of you who take a pride in our village and work so hard to make it such a special place. The picture shows Sue Keeble and Chris Leftwich enjoying the rain!

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club
March 19th saw two very different Half Marathons being run by club members. Firstly, the Robert Tomlinson Half Marathon in Stowmarket and the Muskita Limassol Half Marathon in Cyprus! Surprisingly, for Stowmarket, is was a perfect day for a race, dry and still after a night of rain. Our Club was represented by 14 Seniors running the Half Marathon, 2 Juniors running the 1.5 mile race and 2 more running the Fun Run. The Half Marathon course is not the easiest and 'gently' undulates through the Suffolk countryside. With it being a local race, it proves to be a very social race and the Stowmarket Striders always provide plenty of cake at the finish. With the race also being part of the County Road Championships, everyone ran strong and lots of PBs were gained .A huge congratulations to Belinda Godbold who not only came first in her age group, but also won a trophy for the County Road Championships! Well done to the juniors Annanise Bell, Elissia Bell and Laila McNeil who were also prize winners in their respective races. Katrina Rigby headed off to Cyprus to run her half marathon and in her own words, this is her account of the day:
Sunday morning I was rudely awoken at 5:15am (3:15UK time!) ready for an early breakfast and to catch the race transfer bus at 6:15am. A short ride and thankfully no rain today, I was at the bag drop. After a few poses on the pier in the sunshine I made my way to the start of the Muskita Limassol Half Marathon. I buddied up close to the 2 hour pacer in the hope he could get me round, which was now turning into a very warm and sunny race.
I started strong and running with the pacer was keeping me in check, however the sun was beating down and it was beginning to get a bit hot. I kept my cool and manged to get to the turnaround point in good time, I was on for my sub two hours! Thankfully at this point a grey cloud descended, but unfortunately accompanied with a head wind. I had to dig deep to keep my pace and thankfully a small decline certainly helped. The last three miles were tough and with the finish hard to spot with the numerous sponsor’s arches, it was a long finishing straight. Thankfully I could finally see the timing clock and I had only a few seconds to spare to finish in under 2 hours. Finally crossing the line at 1:59:45 with the pacer close behind I was ecstatic, I'd done what I’d set out to do. I was very happy and celebrated with a post-race beer, non-alcoholic of course!

Notes from the Beekeeper’s Diary
The honey bees’ year starts in spring, but with climate change it’s becoming more and more difficult to tell when spring ends and summer begin. This year February and March were marked with heavy rain, low temperatures and high winds, all of which prevented the bees from getting out and about. So they missed the early season nectar and pollen from crocus, aconites, mahonia and all the other late winter flowering plants and shrubs. Only now in early April are daytime temperatures struggling into double figures, but the milky white blackthorn blossom now cloaking the hedgerows tell us that warmer days are just around the corner.
Honey bees do not hibernate. In the autumn the number of bees in the colony will reduce from the summer population of over 60,000 to around 10,000, one of which will be the queen. The workers carry on managing their food stores and when it gets really cold form a cluster to maintain the body heat of the colony.
Nature always makes up for a late spring with a dramatic burst of activity, and we can expect the queen bees to begin laying again as soon as the workers are able to forage for pollen. When the colony gets into full swing the queen will be laying up to 2,000 eggs each day, each of which will emerge as a young adult bee after three weeks; and she has to because it is a race against time before the over-wintered workers are worn out.
Otherwise the colony will die, and sadly it is now becoming apparent that this year an unusually high proportion of colonies have failed to survive the winter. When the bees have rebuilt the colony to sufficient size, from mid April onward, they will prepare to swarm. Swarming is the only way that honey bees can create a new colony to replace losses. The queen leaves the nest with half the worker bees, leaving behind an embryo queen to mate and raise her own brood. The old queen and her retinue often form a cluster while scouts are sent out in search of a suitable nesting site. Swarming bees can be quite alarming, but in fact are quite docile.
Unfortunately the success rate of feral nests is very low but beekeepers can help the bees by collecting and re-hiving swarms. So if you suddenly find your alone and phone a local beekeeper to collect them. Or if you don’t have their number handy, just text or phone the Beekeeper on 07503 164823 and they will be taken to safety without charge.
Living with Nature on our Doorstep
Our town is a microcosm for the entire planet. Over many years we have seen the growth in our population with the inevitable expansion of our built environment. An unfortunate consequence of this is the damage that we are doing to the natural world. The reduction in green spaces means less habitat for wildlife to thrive and a WWF report suggests that the planet has lost 69% of all its wildlife since 1970, a terrifying statistic. This situation is now reaching critical point but it is not too late to act. TV programmes like David Attenborough’s Wild Isles is highlighting the problem, but also showing us that when positive action is taken nature can recover.
So what can we do? Well here in Hadleigh we are fortunate to have designated nature reserves like the railway and river walks on our doorstep and we must treasure these spaces. But as our town expanded like an ever growing patchwork quilt, small patches of green emerged to offer tiny islands of nature across the town.
The Neighbourhood Plan ‘Green Spaces’ working group has identified all of these and is taken action to protect them. But it is more than just protecting grass patches. The important thing here is that we allow a degree of re-wilding which in turn will allow wildlife habitats to recover.
In the North of the town there is a footpath that dates back to the 1880s. It routes from Calais Street through the built up area and emerges on Aldham Road, with an off shoot that cuts across from Churchill Avenue to Boswell Lane.
This path links together several of the established green patches and forms an 800m corridor with an area of over 2.5 acres, has over 100 matures trees and hedgerows and is surrounded by private gardens. So potentially this area could form a new nature corridor through the heart of the built up area. HEAT are currently canvassing local residents to gauge opinion and from casual conversations in the area there seems to be a desire to do something. But what could we do? Well any action no matter how small will help. But the aim will be to encourage the recovery of wildlife and nature by reintroducing strategically placed habitats along the proposed nature corridor such as; bird and bat boxes, small wood piles and bug hotels to attract the smaller creatures, together with some areas of no mow grass, patches of wild flowers and new hedgerows. Any changes would be relatively small and subtle and of course done in consultation with local residents. The overall objective is to create a beautiful natural space that helps us and the wildlife that we both love and need, live better together.

News from St Mary’s Primary School Spring 2023
We had another very busy spring term at St Mary’s! The children took part in lots of exciting activities and learning experiences. Head over to our Facebook page ‘St Marys School Hadleigh’ for more information about the fun learning and enrichment activities in each classroom. In the Early Years, the children made pancakes and were very creative with the toppings! Eric Carle’s books were used as inspiration for vivid collages with textured and patterned papers in Year 1. Children in Year 2 learned about significant and inspiring women in history, including Katherine Johnson (NASA) and Amy Johnson (pilot) and they wrote space poetry and post cards. Year 3 have explored the theme of volcanoes, looking at Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii and making dioramas to represent the effects of the eruption. Year 4 really enjoyed learning about Rainforests in the spring term and they were really creative when making colourful Rainforest dioramas. The topic of the Second World War in Year 5 inspired lots of creativity, such as making Anderson Shelters, designing wartime medals and silhouette and poppy art. The Year 6 pupils had their residential trip to PGL at Bawdsey Manor in the spring term. This was a wonderful experience that helped develop their independence, resilience and team skills. The children returned with great confidence and pride, having achieved things they didn’t know they could. Related to the trip, they have learned about coastlines and rivers, including how they change over time. Children across the school have participated in a variety of exciting sports opportunities, including lunchtime and after-school clubs, such as football, astro-ball, dodgeball, multi-skills and Wake ‘n’ Shake.
We are very proud of our Year 3 team who attended the U9s Multi Skills Festival at Hadleigh High School. Our St Mary's representatives displayed courage, collaboration and good sportsmanship - having fun competing and taking part together. Well done to our Year 2 team that attended the U7 Multiskills event at Hadleigh High School. They all had fun competing in mixed teams with other local primary schools! Some of them were in the winning team. Well done for a fantastic performance and for representing the school so brilliantly! Year 6 had a fantastic time trampolining at Hadleigh High School. They learned new skills, such as tucks, straddles, pikes, seat drops and swivels.
The Early Years and Year 1 children are accessing regular weekly Forest School activities in the lovely outdoor space at the Deanery. The children spent time finding and collecting eggs that had information about some of the wonderful things we see in the woods and if they could tell us something, they could swap the paper egg for a chocolate one. The children have also discovered how to really be themselves in nature, and are really starting to feel at home in the lovely surroundings. They are becoming much more confident to explore! We can’t wait to continue our adventures in the summer term!
All of the children thoroughly enjoyed a visit from Professor Nitrate to start off British Science Week! Some were literally blown away! children learned lots about science and were really inspired to take their questioning further. The Professor engaged the children across the whole school with exciting ‘Silly Science’ workshops. The different activities in each classroom included: Early Years: Will it float or Sink?; Oak: How is butter made?; Elm: How to make the quickest skittle rainbow?; Beech: Life Cycles; Rowan: Animal Classification; Chestnut: How to make the strongest bridge?; Willow: Making connections - electrical circuits!
For World Book Day, children dressed up as characters and shared favourite stories. The whole school participated in a ‘ Picture Book World Cup’, through
which the children voted on and selected a favourite picture book. The children really entered into this contest and had very strong opinions on which books they liked and why and which they did not. This is what Reading for Pleasure is all about!
Across the school, children participated in a range of mathematics activities for NSPCC ‘Number Day’. Examples of activities in class included actions in response to dice throws, number hunts outside, using magnifiers to find tiny numerals, creating tally charts and shooting at numbered targets. It was fantastic to see all the children having so much fun with numbers and important to raise money for a good cause! Thank you to everyone involved. Later in the term, we raised money for Comic Relief with our crazy hair day! Thank you to the children for truly embracing the craziness of the day and raising £222. The children looked amazing - such bright, glittery, spiky hair creations! The children in Beech and Rowan Classes put on a fabulous production of Cinderella. Their performances were all greatly entertaining and they can be very proud of themselves.
The term finished with our traditional Easter Service at St Mary’s Church. It was fantastic to all gather at the church to celebrate Easter together. Year 6 represented the school brilliantly, leading the service and Year 5 shared some prayers that they had written. It was lovely to see so many parents, grandparents and friends there; a real coming together of our school community. The children’s singing was particularly lovely. We hope everyone had a very restful and peaceful Easter Holidays.
Rotary Review
News Flash! Christmas collections in danger! Father Christmas needs your help! His Transport requires major repairs. For around 40 years Santa assisted by Rotarians and friends has toured Hadleigh raising funds for local charities – some £100,000 over that period! Now the float is in need of major repair and this will be carried out during the summer months so that all is ready in good time for Christmas. Rotary is seeking a place in or near to Hadleigh where repairs can be carried out as well as a small team to help with the work. If you feel that you could assist in any way please telephone David 01473 827226 or visit our stand at ‘ABOUT HADLEIGH’ on 27th May.
Club News: The final collection for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal took place at Morrisons on27 March and raised a further £157.75 making a grand total of £631.00 which was sent to ShelterBox. This will provide a fully equipped tent to accommodate a whole family until they can rebuild their house. The Club would like to thank everyone who helped collect and all those who donated so generously.
Ukraine Crisis: Bulletin No8 - Rotary in this country has provided many generators for hospitals to enable them to carryout operations etc again. Drones and mine detecting equipment sent by Rotary has now cleared the equivalent of 2000 football pitches allowing farmers to sow crops again. In Moldova there are only 8 Rotary Clubs with about 100 members but with the considerable help of Clubs in this country they have organised shelter and food for 5000 Ukrainians refugees and provided travelling foodbanks to supply many more refugees. They have been honoured to receive personal thanks from the Moldovan President.
These stories and much more can be found in the Rotary Magazine at rotarygbi.org/magazine.

Merrily, Merrily, Merrily: Scout’s Duck and Raft Race
Imagine: Row, row, row your raft gently down the stream … Warm sunlight trickling through the leaves of trees on the riverbank, ducks a dabbling, sausages sizzling on a smoky barbeque and the prospect of a pint or glass of your favourite tipple at Hadleigh’s best hostelry The George ... Bliss. And all yours, courtesy of Hadleigh Sea Scouts Group, on Sunday June 11th at the annual Duck and Raft Race. Starting at 10am, the raft teams compete in heats for the highly prestigious cup - boisterous and rollicking bouts of water bourne capers as the final approaches closer. Half way through this aquatic tournament the Grand Duck Race is held - These plastic heroes face weirs, mill ponds and geese as they scrabble towards the winning line.
Every year, on the day, people come and ask to enter a team only to be disappointed as only 16 teams can compete. So if you fancy your chances, have piratical or sailing within your blood, or just the lust for glory - you need to complete a Raft Entry Form as soon as possible. These are available from behind the bar at the George on the High Street. Entry fee is £15 per raft. Duck tickets (Duckets!) to enter the Duck Race are available from Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Leaders and also from Avis Newsagents. There might be a few left to purchase at the event. The ducks themselves are out at a local farm, limbering up for the event.
Following the Races, as is traditional we invite all to convene for our traditional post the post party hosted at The George.

Thank You
On February 4th I was taken into hospital with pneumonia and Sepsis A after spending 4 days in bed feeling very poorly with what I thought were flu symptoms. Thanks to my daughter Lily’s quick reactions an ambulance was called and I was taken to Ipswich Hospital. I was placed in an induced coma for over a week, and then spent 31/2 weeks in critical care. I was then told by doctors that I had fluid on my left lung and I would need to be transferred to Norwich Hospital to have a special operation to remove the fluid from my lung. The operation was a success and I am now home. I am now having lots of physio and visits from nurses as well as on going visits to hospital for check ups. My recovery is on going and I hope to make a full recovery in time. I would like to thank the Ipswich and Norwich Hospitals, the doctors and nurses and my family for all their support, especially my brother Craig, who was my rock, and my children who I love dearly, at such a difficult and emotional time.

History will be made this month as the coronation of King Charles III takes place in Westminster Abbey, an occasion full of pomp and ceremony. There will be some of us that can remember the last coronation and for the majority of people this will be the first time they will witness history in the making. We all need something to lift our spirits because there has been so much unsettling news to contend with, strikes, rising prices, conflict and so it goes on. We all have been affected one way or another by what is going and not all of us cope very well. If you need someone to listen to you and share your concerns our healers are there for you. Please allow us to help you. Please telephone (answer machine) 01473 823282 or log onto www.hadleighhealingsociety.org or visit Hadleigh Healing Society Facebook page for an appointment.
We are holding one of our popular Clairvoyant Days on Saturday, 27th May between 10am – 4pm. There will be two mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £15. If you would an appointment please book early to avoid disappointment. Please telephone giving your name and telephone number clearly and we will get back to you.
Sponsored walk
On the evening of the 20th May I will be joining literally hundreds of others, 800+ as I write, who will be walking to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice which improves life for people living with a progressive or life-limiting illness. Their work is centred on an individual's needs, providing specialist support whenever and wherever it is needed - at home, in the community, or at the hospice. Every year free care is given to over 3,000 patients and their families. Annually it costs around £12.9 million to provide these services and run the organisation, with the charity raising 70% of funds via revenue streams and the generosity of the community through support of its retail shops and fundraising activities.
The walk starts from Ipswich Town FC and can be 5 or 10 miles. I would be very grateful if you would please sponsor me for the 10 mile option by visiting St Elizabeth Hospice Enthuse giving page. My name can be found by entering it on the Search facility . There is also a sponsorship form in the St Elizabeth Hospice Hadleigh Charity Shop, 98 High St. Many thanks for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

Welcome: The Chair welcomed everyone Report Of The Last Meeting: Accepted Matters Arising: None
STANDARD UPDATES
Hadleigh Town Council (HTC) No report. Richard informed the meeting that six candidates have put their names forward for the next Town Council out of a possible fifteen seats (five would be needed for a quorate meeting).
Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council (BDC) Elections have brought forward five candidates for north ward and six for south ward. Remember photo-ID is required. A post and rail fence has been erected around Angel Court so it appears the capping stones will not be repaired/replaced. School holiday activities will continue into 2024. The Active Living programme at the Leisure Centre is looking to extend its reach with a Strength & Balance programme. The Suffolk Walking Festival launches 13 May for two weeks with over 70 walks. Monthly Digital Skills sessions continue in Hadleigh Library. For organisations needing Mental Health First Aider training, free sessions May 2 & 9, 1-5pm. Limited places, contact Bethany Taylor 01449 724881.
Visit Hadleigh Town Guides are participating in the Suffolk Walking Festival with the Hadleigh walks being sold out but, for these, please contact us directly if you wish to participate A venue (pop-up would be fine) for a Visitor Information Centre this summer is still urgently needed. Jane passed on grateful thanks to the Men’s Shed, Jim Wilding and Brian Loftus for their sterling work in placing the plaque for the Community Gardens on the Market Place rear wall.
Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) The report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News.
St Marys Church Pop-Up meals over the Easter holidays continue with 140 guests being served last week and activities for all. Volunteers and donations always welcome. It is hoped to continue these events every other week from 2pm – 5pm on a Wednesday. A pleasingly diverse congregation of over 100 with nearly 20 children came for the Easter Sunday service. We are proud and privileged regularly to welcome a number of people with additional needs – some of whom have found a welcome into the choir – as well as people from a variety of minority groups who now come to services and activities. St Mary’s really is an inclusive church. Routine maintenance is being carried
out and research continues into the best forms of heating and lighting systems for the renewal programme. The Deanery Gardens are being well used by forest schools and for outdoor cooking sessions. The Friends of St Mary’s had kindly agreed to cover £18k of the £23k required to refurbish the Library of the Deanery Tower and the Diocese will underwrite the additional £5k noted as a contingency amount.
Diary Date: 8 July 12 noon to 4pm for our family-oriented Deanery Fete with BBQ and Dog Show, many garden games, face painting, competitions, raffle, craft stalls and more.
HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Bat Group now up and running with 15 members. Two introductory evening bat walks planned. Do contact HEAT if you are interested in helping bring Hadleigh to carbon net zero – a campaign is being considered and Manningtree & East Bergholt are running similar projects. The Nature Corridor (Green Highway) has won the support of the councils and consultations are about to start with the 1.4km of householders along the route to find out what they want.
Cost Of Living Concerns Babergh is able to assist with any concerns people may have and can signpost as required. Do get in touch if you need to. Distribution of simple insulation materials has now stopped. Another Repair Café is planned for 15 April.
Hadleigh Men’s Shed There are now some 52 members and the Committee is considering additional opening times and new activities now that the workshop is fully kitted out.
Benton End Matthew is now representing Benton End, having secured part time work with them across a variety of needs. Lucy Skellorn has left but is able to offer assistance on an ad hoc basis. Matthew is trying to secure quotes for a roof repairs (and ultimately a new roof !); interviewing, with James, for a two-days-a-week gardener after which volunteers will be sought and is putting in funding applications and work with community groups continues. Benton End has a garden designed by Sarah Price at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, after which the planting is coming to Benton End for incorporation into their garden here.
Hadleigh Old School’s new exhibition is Art for Your Home and Garden with indoor displays and garden sculptures. Preview night at 7pm Friday 14 April, and continuing Sat 15 (10-5pm) Sun 16 (11-4pm), Sat 22 (10-5pm) Sun 23 (11-4pm).
A O B
Sylvia read out an email from Roger Young enquiring what would happen should a disaster befall Hadleigh (eg. a plane crash in the town or an unexploded bomb going off). Both HTC and BDC have had well-rehearsed plans for many years for just such events with relevant legal requirements for training/paperwork and consultation with all other relevant bodies firmly in place.
Sarah reported that in 2024 it will be the 10th anniversary of the Christmas Present Trust and they are looking to hand over the reins for its organisation and fund raising. It started with 30 guests and now runs at about 120. There is a fund raiser/awareness raiser taking place at The Ansell Centre on Sat 10 June from 10 – 4pm with drinks and nibbles. It was suggested that leaflets be created and distributed at St Mary’s Pop-Ups as there is a synergy between the two events and may encourage the necessary organisers/volunteers. There is clearly a social need for this event and it would be very sad to lose it if no-one can be found to assist with the day’s event. They will be at the
What’s About Hadleigh event on 27 May.
Kathryn reported that the Mill Wheel has been covered and the area will be cleared and tidied before the Officer responsible leaves BDC. Preservation work is continuing in conjunction with Anglian Water. It is hoped to be able to introduce fish ladders here as well as further down-river by the Stour. It was suggested that signs be erected at the mill wheel site to inform visitors about the preservation/conservation work being done/planned. The meeting closed at 5.17pm Next Meeting: Tuesday 9 May 2023 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool &Leisure. Chair: Sylvia Martin
