A note from the Editor

2023 is an exciting year for the Hanover community.

Discover Hanover celebrates its 15th edition of the magazine and the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce prepares to celebrate 100 years of service to the community!

Hanover, Pennsylvania, is the perfect destination for a day trip or overnight visit. We have family friendly activities, delicious food options, a growing craft beer scene, plenty of shopping, and a rich history.

Fondly referred to as Snack Town, Hanover has deep roots with multiple snack food companies (p. 12), and you have the chance to explore a few companies on their factory tours. Make sure to check ahead of time to see if the factories are currently offering tours during your planned visit.

For those interested in history, read about how Center Square transformed into the bustling business center it is today (p. 18). Interested in what else is made in Hanover? Check out Hanover's history with manufacturing over the years (p. 32). You can also visit the Hanover Area Historical Society's museum to learn more about Hanover's founding.

Breakdown Rage Room

Have you ever had a stressful day at work where you felt like you wanted to throw your mug on the ground? Ever thought about smashing your TV when it won’t work? Well, the Breakdown Rage Room is for you! Being the first of its kind in South Central PA, this unique facility won’t be found elsewhere. Have a blast with friends or family breaking various items with an object of your choice (hammer, golf club, baseball bat, etc.)! For up to one hour, you get to release all your rage and you don’t even have to worry about the cleanup. You must book an appointment beforehand and must be 16 years or older to enter the room; anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Hanover Area History Museum

The Hanover Area Historical Society’s History Museum is wrapping up its second year open to the public.

The museum is located in the former carriage house of the Warehime - Myers Mansion. The HAHS was fortunate to design and build the museum in an intact architectural 1913 time capsule. With only minimal restoration done in 2017, everything you will see is still the original 109-year old building. Museum hours are Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Other times are available by appointment. Visit www. hahs.us for more information.

Hanover Fire Museum

The Hanover Fire Museum offers a plethora of memorabilia and firefighting apparatuses to showcase the history of the Hanover Area Fire Services. Visitors can see how technology has advanced from hand-drawn carts and pumps to motorized equipment through both handson and informational exhibits. All featured equipment is authentic and has served the greater Hanover area throughout the past two centuries. Tours are available every Wednesday and the first and third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Private tours can be requested via phone.

Warehime-Myers Mansion

Become a part of Hanover’s rich history by visiting the Warehime Myers Mansion. The mansion was built between 1911 and 1913 for C.N. Myers, the co-owner of Hanover Shoe Company. The house was purchased by William Warehime in 1997 and donated to the Hanover Historical Society in 2007. The house is beautifully furnished with a variety of antiques and includes 13 rooms, 3 baths, as well as a kitchen, solarium, and carriage house. Tours must be scheduled via phone. Revonah Pretzels

Revonah, “Hanover” spelled backwards, is a staple in our snack food town! Their free, 20-minute tour displays the pretzel bakery, dough mixing, pretzel twisting, dipping, and baking. The tour is handicap accessible and features an onsite factory store. Tours are provided by reservation-only.

Learn how a raw spud is transformed into a crispy chip from a special glass-enclosed observation gallery overlooking the production line of Utz Potato Chips! HANOVER'S SNACK TOWN HISTORY

Hanover, Pennsylvania, has a long and storied history of turning out delicious foods, from fresh-off-the-farm fruits and vegetables to hot-from-the-kettle potato chips and carefully twisted pretzels. As a result, the Hanover region has become known as the Snack Food Capital of the World given the concentration of snack food manufacturers. Read on for fun facts about the businesses in the Hanover community and the tours and stores you can visit when you’re in town!

Hanover Canning Company to Hanover Foods Corporation

In 1924, Hanover Canning Company was founded. Canned peas, beans, and tomatoes grown by the owner himself and other farmers; they also processed sauerkraut in the winter. Today, with acquisitions throughout the country, the now-named Hanover Foods Corporation produces vegetables all year round as well as another famous Hanover snack food, Wege Pretzels.

Wege Pretzels are known as the originator of the “Poker Pretzel” – a fun snack featuring pretzels shaped like card suits!

Snyder’s of Hanover

Known for their delicious pretzels around the world, including Honey Mustard Pretzel Pieces, Snyder’s was the first company in the snack food industry to use aluminum foil bags for its products, increasing shelf life. This innovation helped the company expand into distant markets such as Pittsburgh and New York, and the demand continued to grow.

In 2018, Campbell’s Snacks purchased Snyder’s of Hanover and the brand continues to expand offerings and increase in popularity. Stop by the Outlet Store to pick up all your favorite pretzel pieces and more!

Revonah

Since 1935, every pretzel is rolled and twisted by hand then salted to perfection. The sourdough masterpieces are baked in a 70-yearold hearth brick and stone oven before slowly drying in a heated kiln, creating the perfect crunch. Reverse Revonah and you’ve got Hanover!

Utz® Quality Foods

In 1921, Bill & Salie Utz made approximately 50 lbs. of potato chips each hour in a small summer house and sold the “Hanover Home Brand Potato Chips” to independent stores and farmers’ markets in the Hanover and Baltimore Areas. Today, Utz®produces over 3.3 million pounds of snacks per week (about half of which are potato chips).

Utz® celebrated 100 years in 2021 at the Snack Town Street Fair, one of many community events that the company generously supports.

History of Center Square

Downtown Hanover has always been known as a hub for commerce in our community. However, in 1863 the Battle of Hanover occurred in Center Square. Major General J.E.B. Stuart and his confederate calvary encountered General Elon Farnsworth’s Brigade and General George A. Custer’s Michigan Brigade. The battle ended in a stalemate but delayed J.E.B. Stuart’s arrival to meet General Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg. To learn more about the Battle of Hanover, take the self-guided Heart of Hanover Trails.

Unveiling The Picket

The Civil War remained a vivid memory into the 20th-century for much of America. In September 1905 in Center Square, Hanover dedicated the Picket, a bronze statue by Boston sculptor, Cyrus E. Dallin of a mounted cavalry solider commemorating the Battle of Hanover. The Picket was unveiled along with Iron Mike, the bronze dog that had been moved from Mt. Olivet Cemetery 30 years earlier.

Heart of Hanover Trails

Take the newly unveiled walking tour to learn more about the Battle of Hanover and other compelling stories that have unfolded in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Each storyboard was carefully created to feel history first-hand through others’ experiences through many eras, including the Civil War. discover MANUFACTURING OVER THE YEARS

Since its founding in the 1700’s, Hanover’s industries included cigar manufacturing, gloves, silks, flour, water wheels, shoes, cars, machine shop products, furniture, wire cloth and ironstone grinders. While some are no longer in business, many of Hanover’s local producers have been around for more than 100 years. Hanover’s businesses continue to evolve and produce relevant products used throughout the United States and around the world.

Wagons, Carriages, & Cars

From 1830 to 1880, Hanover was a leader for the manufacture of wagons and carriages. The town had over 30 factories that fabricated these vehicles. The Hanover Motor Car Company was established in 1921. The Hanover car was available as a two-seater roadster or as a two-seater delivery truck.

Fitz Water Wheel

The Fitz Water Wheel Company officially began in 1902, but its history started in 1840 when Samuel Fitz operated the Hanover Foundry and merged with Tusacaroa Iron Works. By the 1920s, the company was considered one of the largest vertical water wheel manufacturers in the world. The company sold in 1965.

Elsner Engineering Works

“Purpose built machines. Purpose driven people.”

In 1934, Frank and Johanna Elsner founded Elsner Engineering Works and have more than 85 years of continuous, family-owned operation. Their first machine developed was a slicer for the potato chip industry.

Elsner currently has more than 3,000 machines in over 60 countries.

CAM Innovation

CAM Innovation has over 100 years of history, beginning in 1910 with the Peerless Equipment Company. In the 1960’s, Charles McGough purchased the Peerless Electric Motor repair equipment division and reorganized the company under the name CAM Industries and moved to Philadelphia Street where CAM remains today.

CAM focused on electric motor repair, until market demand enabled them to expand their products to include undercutters, tape/wire banding devices, welders, special handling equipment and electric coil taping machines.

In 2005, they adopted the name, CAM Innovation.

The Sheppard Family

The Sheppard family is responsible for several companies in Hanover, beginning with Harper Donelson (H.D.) Sheppard and the Hanover Shoe Company. Visit the Hanover Area History Museum located in the Carriage House at 305 Baltimore Street to learn more about the rich history of this family.

Hanover Shoe Company

In the 1890’s, H.D. Sheppard and C.N. Myers acquired the Hanover Shoe Company. The two men had a common vision of selling the best shoes possible for one price, $2.50 a pair. Over 60 retail stores opened over a 15-year period, with Hanover being their primary manufacturing location.

In 1977, C&J Clark International Ltd. purchased the Hanover Shoe Company. The Hanover Shoe building remains standing on Carlisle Street to this day.

Hanover Shoe Farms

Greatest Name in Harness Racing”

In addition to shoes, H.D. Sheppard and C.N. Myers shared a passion for horses. Hanover Shoe Stables evolved into Hanover Shoe Farms in 1922 when H.D.’s first son Lawrence B. Sheppard took the reins.

Through a series of strategic purchases, L.B. made Hanover a household name in the world of harness racing by 1926.

The breeding and racing successes of the Hanover Shoe Farms for nearly 100 years has earned the highest accolades and set records lasting decades.

R.H. Sheppard Company, Inc.

Richard Harper Sheppard founded R.H. Sheppard Company, Inc. in 1937.

The company started manufacturing diesel engines in the 1930’s. In all, twenty basic models of engines were developed and manufactured throughout the world. The engines were used to power generators, pumps, lifeboats, rescue craft, refrigerated railroad cars, and farm tractors.

Today, R.H. is a global leader in power steering technologies and is a Bendix CVS Company.

Since 1923, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce has been working on behalf of its business members and the community to create an environment that is conducive to business growth and development to enhance the economic vitality and overall quality of life for the area. The following represents key milestones and accomplishments of the past 25 years.

The Chamber worked through a comprehensive planning process called Hanover 2000 which focused on several key attributes that contribute to the overall quality of life in the region. The study evaluated:

• Quality of Education

• Downtown revitalization

• Transportation and infrastructure improvements

• Workforce development

• Inter-Governmental Cooperation

The Chamber started working with local school districts to create career pathway awareness for high school students in various industries. The schools started working with local employers to provide students with job shadow and internship opportunities. These programs helped develop very close business and education partnerships across the community. In 2017, the Chamber became the first Chamber of Commerce in PA to sponsor a group model apprenticeship program, and in 2020, registered a pre-apprenticeship through PA Labor and Industry. The Chamber worked in conjunction with employers and schools to develop a talent pipeline to address the needs of employers in the greater Hanover area.

The Chamber led an effort to develop a revitalization plan for downtown Hanover. Several community visioning sessions were held, and the Chamber formed a committee to lay the groundwork for the future.

Leadership Hanover was established by a group of Hanover businesses. The program introduces participants to key leaders in the community and focuses on economic drivers that contribute to making Hanover a great place to work and raise a family. It also encourages participants to get involved on volunteer boards of organizations that are looking for talented leaders.

The Chamber worked with the Pennsylvania Tourism Bureau to tell the story of the Battle of Hanover and have Hanover designated as one of seven Civil War Trails communities in South Central Pa.

Discover Hanover, a community-wide tourism brand, was launched. It focuses on the area’s rich history and quality of life. It features places to shop, dine, and places of interest to visit. Discover Hanover draws thousands of visitors to the area each year.

Main Street Hanover was incorporated and gained its own charitable non-profit status. Since then, Main Street Hanover has served the needs of downtown by coordinating events, facilitating merchant meetings, and supporting the long-term economic growth of Hanover's downtown.

Capitalizing on our strong and recognizable industry brand, “Snack Town,” the Chamber created Snack Town Street Fair and Snack Town Brewfest. Both events are incredibly popular with locals and visitors to the area. The events couple our long-time “salty” snack foods industry with our newly emerging brew pub industry. It’s a winning combination that draws thousands to the area each year.

The Hanover Chamber receives a 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 5Star ranking is the highest level of accreditation and is only awarded to chambers that demonstrate exemplary performance in all facets of operations. Approximately two percent of Chambers in the U.S. achieve 5-Star status.

COVID-19 has a devastating impact on local businesses. The Chamber worked with health care officials, elected officials, and local government to help the business community understand how to navigate the closure process, where to find resources to keep customers and employees safe, and assisted with UEC/PPP. The Chamber also worked with the same stakeholders to communicate plans for reopening as closure mandates were lifted.
