April is Hanover Chamber Membership Month April is Membership Month here at the chamber, and that means we need your help! During this month, the chamber makes a concentrated effort to secure new members and strengthen our voice. This month is integral to our success - and yours. The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization that prospers through its partnerships with area schools, businesses and organizations. It is through these types of collaborations that the chamber is able to provide its members with the tools they need to succeed in the Hanover area. Over 90 percent of the Hanover Chamber’s membership is comprised of small businesses with 25 employees or less. More than half of the businesses that join the Chamber do so for the advertising and promotional opportunities; 38 percent join for networking. The Chamber serves these members by providing an array

of quality products, programs and services, including health insurance, property and casualty insurance, educational workshops, networking opportunities and advertising. We are asking members, like you, to become involved. Because of your involvement in the Hanover community, we ask that you take an active part in our efforts. During the month of April, non-members are encouraged to attend the April Eye-Opener Breakfast - free of charge! Please do your part and invite community members to these events. A list of current members can be found at hanoverchamber.com. Event details can be found on pages 10 and 11 of this newsletter. If you would like to become more involved during Membership Month, please contact Haley Briggs at 717-637-6130 ext 104 or hbriggs@hanoverchamber.com.

Chamber Sends a Little Slice of Hanover to Washington Student

Chamber staff members recently sent materials to a Washington student studying the state of Pennsylvania. Brooke S., a fifth grade student at Cascade Christian School in Puyallup, Washington was assigned a research project on the state of Pennsylvania. To gather information, Brooke sent a letter to the editor of the Gettysburg Times, asking for "pictures, postcards, used license plates, facts, products, etc." from PA. The chamber chose to send Brooke a box of items highlighting key parts of Hanover's history. Brooke received materials about the Battle of Hanover, Hanover's distinction as the "Black Rose City," and a brief description of the strong snack food presence that exists in our town. Brooke also receieved samples of Utz Potato Chips and Snyder's Pretzels, as well as with a few keepsake items like magnets, a mug, a copy of Discover Hanover magazine, and a book by local authors, "The Hanover, Pennsylvania Bucket List." We wish Brooke lots of success on her project and hope that the materials we sent will prove to be very helpful in her research.

2018 Legislative Roundtables Chamber Legislative Roundtables will be held quarterly on the FIRST Friday of the month at 7:30 a.m. at Dutch Country Restaurant. Please join us for the next roundtable on Friday, May 4. Please note, we have a new format for our roundtables! As the chamber continues to develop a legislative scorecard, we have restructured our roundtables to focus on issues and legislation that is of most importance to the Hanover business community. Throughout the year, we will continue to follow up with our local legislators to ensure that the voices of the business community are heard. Over the next year you can expect to see a scorecard (similar to a report card) of votes which we will track based on issues chosen by Chamber members. Currently, we are watching legislation pertaining to worker’s compensation and opioid abuse, 529 plan reform, regulatory issues, redistricting of the US Senate seats, and the state gubernatorial and house races. As you know, these issues are always changing and ever evolving. To stay up-to-date, consider joining us at the May Legislative Roundtable. Can’t make it? Make sure to subscribe to the chamber’s digital “Chamber Insider” newsletter, a quarterly brief sent straight to your inbox regarding the topics that matter most to Hanover. Main Street Hanover

Art Alley Main Street Hanover’s public art committee, Art Alley, is so excited to announce its first public art program – a pretzel sculpture series! Collaboration is at the heart of this project. Inspired by other public art projects like ‘Cows on Parade’ in Chicago and NYC, Bears in Hendersonville, NC, Dinosaurs in Pittsburgh and similar projects, Art Alley has created a pretzel design with the help of Hanover High School students and teachers. Pretzels highlight the rich snack food history of our community, and the shape of the pretzel creates an interactive sculpture that people will enjoy seeing around town. Riley Welding created the pretzels out of rolled steel, Hanover High School students are finishing off the welding, and Riley Welding will prime and paint the pretzels to be ready for local artists to decorate. Once complete, the pretzels will go up for display in downtown Hanover. Art Alley will be asking artists to submit a design proposal for their pretzel art piece. The committee will review and choose 10 artists that will have their creations featured in locations throughout downtown’s Main Street District. Those pieces will then be auctioned off during the ArtsFest event in September, and the proceeds will directly fund mural projects and another round of public art sculptures.

9

Members of Art Alley include Kristin Newman, Panebaker Funeral Home; Julie Gelsinger, SouthWestern High School; Marie Smith, Hanover High School; Mandy Loughry, Winding Willow Studio; and Justine Trucksess, Main Street Hanover. Looking for more art? Keep an eye out later this year for ArtsFest! ArtsFest is a new event for Main Street Hanover. It is currently still in the planning phases, but we know it will include the Chalk It Up event, live art, artist’s vendor booths, and live music throughout the day all in Downtown Hanover.

Give Local York For the first time ever, on May 4, 2018, York County will host a community-wide celebration of generosity that benefits hundreds of nonprofit organizations serving York County. The event is Give Locl York, and it is presented by the York Federal Fellows Alumni. A fun and inspiring 24-hour online giving event, Give Local York, will be the largest one-day "Give" in York County history. The goal is simple: inspire York Countians to come together, show pride in their community, and contribute to support the lifechanging work of local nonprofits.Give Local York unites donors, businesses, and organizations in giving back to the communities where we live, work and play. On May 4, every dollar donated at www.givelocalyork.org is stretched with bonus funds provided by our generous sponsors, adding excitement and incentives, while raising essential funds for the work of local nonprofits. From First Friday activities in York City, to dine outs, flash mobs and more, Give Local York will unite organizations and individuals for 24 hours as part of a deeply engaging fete of good work and giving back in York County.

Art Alley, the downtown public art initiative, plans to build an environment where artists--from students to amateurs to professionals--feel welcome and encouraged to be engaged with the downtown improvement efforts. Through four initial public art projects, Art Alley will build the capacity for artists to engage in murals, sculptures, and out-of-the-box, engaging, art projects. Art Alley is where artists and economic development collide! All of this would not be possible if not for the overwhelming support we received from the community. Using the online fundraising platform IOBY, and a matching grant from the National Main Street Center, Main Street Hanover crowdfunded over $7,000 to start these projects. We can’t thank the community enough for that support! Main Street would also like to thank the Art Alley committee members who brought these projects to life.

Many Hanover non-profits are participating and planning events throughout the day on May 4! Follow along on Main Street Hanover’s Facebook Page and the Give Local York webpage. https://givelocalyork.org/. A full list of participating Hanover non-profits will be available this month on the Chamber and Main Street Hanover websites.
