For our 10th anniversary issue, we wanted to capture the energy that is buzzing around Hanover. New businesses are opening every month, local industry and educators are working together to develop our future workforce, and the downtown revitalization is steadily progressing. Hanover is changing. While some may be wary of the change, we most certainly welcome any positive impact that will help bring people like you to our town.

In this special, expanded issue of Discover Hanover, we hope you'll notice our fresh, new design. We created fun articles with visitors in mind, from our top ice cream picks, to the best places to retire. Hanover truly is a wonderful place to live, work, and play! On a personal note, I'd like to thank Penn State York for sponsoring our back cover; as a 2017 graduate, I can't help but think how fitting it is that my alma mater is represented in my first magazine. For those who are wondering, our cover photo was taken at the West Manheim Dog Park (see page 32 for more details on this park). On a July evening last summer, my sister and I took our dog Pepper (@pepperthepartigirl) for a hike after the heat of the day had dissipated. The sunset that night was quite amazing—as most are in Hanover—and I knew I had to capture it. Pepper posed just perfectly, and now she's a cover girl. Halloween in the Park—October 19-20 Kids will have tons of fun as they trick-or-treat and ride hayrides in the incredibly decorated campground at Codorus State Park! Don't forget to watch the pet parade and 5k run on Saturday as well. Hanover Halloween Parade—October 25 Enjoy amazing floats, bands, and performances as they make their way down Baltimore Street and into Downtown Hanover. The parade starts at 7:30 p.m., but we suggest arriving earlier to save your spot.

Winter '18

Annual Christmas Parade—November 23 Sip some cocoa and watch as Santa travels through downtown Hanover on his way to his brand NEW cabin! Kids will love seeing decorated floats and collecting candy. The parade starts at 9 a.m. and usually lasts less than half an hour. When it's over, Santa will be available for pictures in his cabin! Santa's Cabin—November 23-December 22 Meet the big guy and get a picture! This is the first year for Santa's new cabin; the previous cabin was retired after being used for 80 years! Cookie Stroll begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m.; a full list of participating businesses is available on Main Street Hanover's website.

St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl—March 16 Head downtown for the St. Patrick's Day pub crawl! The event starts at 2 p.m. at Miscreation Brewing Company and ends at 8 p.m. Free Rita's Italian Ice—March 20 Visit Rita's Ice of Hickory Falls for a free Italian ice on the first day of spring! Paws in the Park Doggy Egg Hunt —April 13 Bring your pooch out to the West Manheim Recreational Park for an adorable Easter Egg Hunt. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends when all eggs have been collected. Easter Egg Hunt at Codorus State Park—April 19 Make crafts, hunt for eggs, and meet the Easter Bunny! This event is held from 4-5 p.m. near the pavallions in Codorus State Park's swimming pool area. Hanover Community Easter Egg Hunt—April 20 Kids will love this egg hunt at 2:30 p.m. at Moul Field. A special needs egg hunt will be held at 12:30 p.m. Memorial Day Parade—May 27 Honor our veterans and attend Hanover's Memorial Day Parade. Welcome! Spend your day in downtown Hanover and experience all that the main street district has to offer! Whether it’s your first time in Hanover, PA or your first time exploring your hometown, the Guthrie Memorial Library has what you need. As an official visitor center and community center for Hanover, you can find historic Hanover brochures, walking maps, and Explore York visitor guides that can help you to plan out your adventure. Before strolling through downtown’s Historic Hanover, fuel up with a small coffee and pastry or fill your belly with a full diner breakfast at one of the many family-owned restaurants downtown. Food is a staple for Hanoverians, so you won’t go hungry downtown. For a truly historic experience, we recommend scheduling tours of the Hanover Area Historical Society’s famous properties, The Warehime-Myers Mansion and The Neas House. All of the rich history of Hanover will build up an appetite. We recommend lunch from two historic hot dog shops serving up a classic Hanover-style hot dog with ‘everything’. This style, similar to a Coney Dog, is a fan favorite for locals. If hot dogs aren’t your thing, you’ll love the other wonderful items on their menus. Looking for more history? The Battle of Hanover walking tour is for you. Preceding the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Hanover is interpreted through wayside signs throughout downtown. While walking, do not forget to look up! Hanover’s historic architecture is something to marvel. If a desire for fun and nostalgia calls to you, a visit to Pennsylvania’s largest arcade should be your next stop. Pay by the hour for pinball, video, and interactive arcade games that will be sure to evoke wonderful memories of childhood, or help make memories for generations to come. You may be in the mood to shop after a nice rest through lunch, and if that is the case there are plenty of places to see. From world-famous footwear, specialty gifts, ladies apparel and accessories, to home décor, vinyl records, art, and specialty olive oils, downtown Hanover’s vibrant retail stores will provide you with an array of unique items you're sure to love.

Hanover The Town Before Gettysburg

Hanover may have played a bigger role in the Civil War than most people think. Many know that the turning point for the war happened when General Robert E. Lee failed to gain victory at Gettysburg. However, few realize that perhaps one of the reasons for this Confederate loss was the unplanned encounter right here in Hanover.

A Local Account of the Battle of Hanover "The morning of the battle I went to the square with a wash basket of bread and a kettle of apple butter and helped feed the soldiers that were coming into Hanover. The soldiers were awful tired and hungry and were glad to get the food people were giving them. The square was full of townspeople with baskets of food. Then word came that General Stuart and his Calvary were coming. General Kilpatrick told us there was going to be fighting and we should all get off the street. I started to run home, but before I could get across the street some of the rebel cavalry came along. The officer halted his men for a moment so we could get by. I ran and kept running until I got home. Just as I started through the door of my house a bullet hit a rain spout, glanced off, and grazed my dress..." June 19, 1863: Rumors are spreading; talk of war and battle can be heard throughout the town, and the excitement is palpable. June 27, 1863: Rumors become truth when the Confederate Calvary under Elijah White rides down Carlisle Street into the town square. Known for their reckless behavior, White’s men arrive armed and ready for battle. Townspeople cower in fear as the rowdy men dismount to purchase supplies from downtown merchants. Having exhausted their stay, the Calvary soon leave for Wrightsville, but not before buying whiskey, burning a few bridges, and knocking down the town's telegraph lines. This cut off Hanover from the rest of the war. Telegraph operator Daniel Trone (whose house still stands at 233 Frederick Street) recalled the day, "We received no newspapers; the telegraph wires were cut, and all we could learn of the movement of the Union or Confederate forces toward Gettysburg was gathered from rumors." June 30, 1863: Jeb Stuart arrives after unexpected skirmishes in the Shenandoah Valley. Ordered by General Robert E. Lee to provide intelligence about the Union’s movements, Stuart made his way north from Virginia but was widely detoured due to the presence of Federal forces along the way. Once in Hanover, Stuart realizes he is not alone; both Maj. Gen. Judson Kilpatrick and George Armstrong Custer are already in town. Battle quickly breaks out as the 13th Virginia and 2nd North Carolina Calvary attack Union horsemen on Frederick Street. The Union army takes hold, preparing a counterattack from their position on Broadway. They quickly draw their sabers and charge through the square, reversing the roles as they pursue the retreating Confederates. Ultimately the Battle of Hanover delayed Stuart, causing him to track north toward Carlisle before arriving to Gettysburg after the battle had already begun. Had he been present during the beginning of the battle, Lee would have had Stuart’s insights and the Confederates may have stood a chance at winning Gettysburg. Fun in the Great Outdoors Whether you are looking for excitement or relaxation, Codorus State Park is the place for you. Located about three miles southeast of Hanover, the park features 3,452 acres of forests, fields, wetlands, and Lake Marburg, a manmade lake. A trolley trail once ran from Hanover to York, but the growing popularity of the automobile eventually led to the demise of the trail. Now, the trail provides a place for people to walk, run, and bike while enjoying nature. A two-mile stretch of the trail is located in Penn Township and the Hanover Borough, extending from Cherry Tree Court to Gitts Run Road. Go on a real-life treasure hunt in Hanover! The Hanover Geo Trail features over 20 caches located in Downtown Hanover, West Manheim Park and Codorus State Park. Festival Fun!

Two signature summertime events you'll love. Snack Town Brewfest® 2018 marks the second year of the popular Snack Town Brewfest® presented by Snyder’s of Hanover and Utz Quality Foods. Held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Good Field in Hanover, the festival features drinks from over 40 breweries and wineries as well as snack pairings from both Snyder’s and Utz, a variety of local food trucks, and live entertainment. Each year, Snack Town Brewfest® offers a special VIP tasting hour from noon to 1 p.m. The VIP hour, sponsored by JA Myers Homes and Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, allows participants to beat the rush of the crowd and gain access to specialty beers available exclusively during the VIP hour. General admission attendees are permitted to enter the festival at 1 p.m., and the festival will run until 5 p.m. Designated driver tickets are available and will come with a free (non-alcoholic) drink thanks to LifeSource Water. A shade tent courtesy of Gettysburg Rental will also be available for patrons to escape from the sun. Snack Town Brewfest® is a 21 and over event; no exceptions. Photo IDs are required for entry. Hanover Dutch Festival If you like food, music, crafts and cars, the Hanover Dutch Festival is a must for you! This year, the festival will celebrate its 35th anniversary on July 28 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Every year, thousands of locals and visitors attend the festival held in Center Square in Downtown Hanover. Over 150 craft vendors bring their handmade wares to the streets of Hanover. Patrons walk the streets of downtown, browsing crafts and creations while enjoying delicious food and traditional Pennsylvania Dutch music. Looking for more? The Dutch Festival also features an antique car show in the St. Matthew’s parking lot on N. Franklin Street. The festival was created to highlight Hanover’s strong Pennsylvania Dutch roots. Pennsylvania Dutch characteristics of hard work and craftmanship are still an integral part of the community and are reflected in the large number of manufacturers that call the Hanover area home. SENIOR RECREATION Looking for activities to do in the local area? Senior centers such as Windy Hill on the Campus provide a range of day-time activities and an opportunity to develop new friendships. Located in nearby Spring Grove, Windy Hill on the Campus is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The center offers social, educational and fitness programs as well as a daily lunch at noon.
