BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT About It All is a business with a big dream and a humble beginning. Seven years ago, owner Robert Myers was in a homeless shelter battling alcoholism. Realizing that he needed to stop living for himself, Myers decided to start living for others and his community. After college and starting a new business, Myers has begun making his dreams of helping others come true. Myers envisioned his business as a place where people with special needs could come to work in an environment where they felt “normal”. He was tired of seeing adults with special needs shunned because they didn’t perform a task quickly, or had difficulty with it. About it All was born of Myers’ belief that everyone deserves to have a purpose and to feel like they are accepted and belong. Myers spent time researching the skills that he could teach adults with special needs that could also turn a profitable business. He discovered t-shirt printing, and began to teach skills like using the hot press and internet design, eventually setting up shop in downtown Hanover. Like most small business owners, Myers struggled in the beginning. He wasn’t getting the support for his business that he imagined. Myers realized that the vape industry was growing and the need for people to find alternative ways to quit smoking was high. In order to support the screen printing side of his business, Myers expanded his store and began selling vaporizers and e-liquids. The revenue from the vape end of the store enabled Myers to continue funding the t-shirt business. Just recently, this gave Myers the extra money he needed to put his first special needs adult employee on payroll.

Robert Myers

“They’re needed, there’s a purpose for them. That’s what helps me sleep at night.” One business owner demonstrates the meaning of living life for others in a shop downtown.

Myers has created two different e-liquid vape flavors; for each sale, $1 is donated to different causes. He created “Puzzled”, a cereal flavored e-liquid with proceeds supporting awareness for autism and funding employees with special needs. “Fighter”, his second e-liquid, has a hibiscus flavor with a splash of tangerine; proceeds from this bottle benefit breast cancer awareness. Myers makes all of his donation records public so that customers know that their money is going to a great cause. “I’m here to make a difference,” reflects Myers. “When I did stop living just for myself and [started living] for the community and for other people around me, my life became so much more humble.” Myers hopes to see his business model (hiring adults with special needs) grow to become a popular business model everywhere. He wants to reimagine the negative image that some might have of vaping and give it a good name; seeing e-liquids that give back to a cause in all major vape stores is a vision that he believes should be a reality. Giving back is what is important to Myers, and he believes he has found his purpose. The ability to find that for someone else is what keeps him going. “They’re needed, there’s purpose for them,” said Myers about his special needs employees. “That’s what helps me sleep at night.”

Getting to Know Robert Myers The downtown business owner shares some of his Hanover favorites.... Where are you originally from, and what brought you to Hanover? Originally Westminster Maryland, and then I was in Florida for 13 years. I came back home to be with my parents in their elderly ages. Being in Hanover allows me to be closer to my mom; she was getting older in age. What are some of your favorite spots in the area? About it All is my favorite place in Hanover! And my favorite place to eat, anywhere with a big steak! Anywhere with steak and potatoes hits the spot. What is your favorite place to relax in town? I’d say Codorus, any kind of state park. Kid’s Kingdom is great for the kids and I’m grateful for that. What do you do for fun? I help people; that’s fun to me. I instill purpose in individuals, with the help of God of course, and that’s what I do for fun. I feel like it’s my calling.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

A Family Affair

One family brings their dream to life, building their business from the ground floor up. Sitting in her warehouse office in McSherrystown, Jess Miller reflects on everything that she and her family have accomplished over the past 12 years. “We pride ourselves on our customer service and our attention to detail, which is why our customers keep coming back,” says Jess of her family-owned and operated business, Prestige Apparel LLC. Prestige Apparel, like many family-owned small businesses, started literally on the ground floor; Jess, her husband, Ryan, and father, Howard Martin, began the screen printing business in 2004 in the basement of their home with just one small 4-station six color press. The idea came from Jess’s brother, a graphic designer, who was often asked for screen printing recommendations by his clients. The Millers liked the idea and the rest, as they say, is history. Prestige Apparel has now grown to a total of 5 employees in a 4,200 square foot location for textile printing (both by hand and machine) and textile embroidery. The most recent development in the warehouse was the purchase of an automatic screen printing press that speeds up production and allows Prestige to offer lower prices and even faster turnaround. The machine is capable of printing up to eight colors. “The automatic press can do hundreds of shirts within a few hours, whereas by hand it could take well over a day,” Jess explains.

Throughout the many changes over the years, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the staff ’s devotion to giving only the best to their customers. From corporate logo apparel for large businesses to supporting local school sports teams, no customer is too big or too small for Prestige. Don’t let the name fool you; Prestige Apparel is not just limited to clothing. In addition to t-shirts, polos and sweatshirts, Prestige also offers logoed promotional items including tote bags, baseball caps, blankets and much more. Upon entering the McSherrystown facility, the feeling of a family-owned small business is immediately evident. The Prestige ‘mascots’, Murray and Cooper, are eager to greet customers at the door with a friendly sniff and wag of the tail. The front office is full of sample shirts with names that locals will immediately recognize, including the YWCA, high school sports teams and organizations, 5k runs, and local bars and restaurants. The decision to set up business in Hanover was an easy one for the Millers, having spent all of their childhoods here, and the husband and wife team hope to one day pass the business on to their children. “We love Hanover and are happy to be doing business here. We have always lived in Hanover and never thought of leaving, personally or professionally,” says Jess. “Hanover is our home and we are proud to be a part of such a wonderful community.”

Matters of the HART From their location in New Oxford, the HART Center is creating opportunities for adults with special needs. For over 20 years, the Hanover Adams Rehabilitation and Training Center (HART Center) has been providing vocational rehabilitation and other work experiences for adults with disabilities. Working with local individuals in need, the HART Center provides opportunities for personal growth and helps to develop self-dependency with work skills. Following an evaluation by state or county officials, individuals are referred to the HART Center based on their ability. Center staff then works with placed individuals to determine specific skills in which they excel, and create a plan to develop these skills. A vocational counselor assists each participant with developing personal goals for growth before they are assigned various jobs within the center. The HART Center provides a variety of jobs with varying levels of difficulty and responsibility to best suit the needs of each individual. On a given day, jobs might entail hand packing or machine feeding; the next, material handling. No day is ever exactly the same, encouraging consistent stimulation and growth. As they gain experience within the center, individuals work with the employment program to find a job outside of the HART center.

10

discoverHANOVER 2016

Craig Clabaugh, interim executive director, explains that the staff at the HART Center sets the facility apart from others in the same field.

“They are here for a reason and it’s not money,” says Clabaugh of his staff. “They are really, truly here because they love helping these people.” In addition to workforce training, the center also provides individuals with hands-on rehabilitation. A rehabilitation specialist with an office on-site works on a daily basis to provide support for individuals. The specialist works with individuals to improve social skills, such as being on time for work, getting along with others, and conflict management. Mary Krumrine, rehabilitation manager, says that a large part of this rehabilitation is leading by example. “It’s very important that staff members model positive behavior,” Krumrine explains. “Their interactions with one another is how a lot of people learn”. The staff interacts with individuals on the floor to make sure they are having a good day, and if not, help to mediate the issue. The HART Center encourages individuals to better themselves and accomplish tasks and goals that they may have never imagined they could. An employee of the month program is in place to provide incentive for individuals to do their best.

Community interaction is also an important component at the HART Center. The center holds bingo events and invites the community to partake in the fun. For the staff, it’s important that individuals experience being part of the community, and experience interactions with people that some of us may take for granted. “I think a lot of people don’t understand about the mission here and the value of it. There are a lot of social things that just come up… and allows our [individuals] to experience something that they may not have had the opportunity to experience [outside of the center],” Clabaugh emphasizes. In order to foster involvement with the community, the center has implemented a membership program, available to those who donate $5 or more. Members are invited to the annual banquet, exclusive to members, staff, and the individuals that are a part of the program. At the banquet, individuals enjoy dressing up and socializing. The banquet features plenty of food, a DJ, and plenty of dancing, Krumrine promises. “And we know how to dance,” she laughs. The HART Center is the epitome of an organization that is truly committed to what they do. This is apparent from the first step through the front door. Walking through the center, Clabaugh stops several times to say hello to every individual and give them a warm smile or a friendly pat on the back. It’s the little interactions that make all the difference.

Keeping Hanover Smiling The Hanover area is known for many things; one of them being the many smiling faces throughout the community. Several local orthodontists show us how they keep those smiles shining and beautiful.

While offering similar services, the orthodontists of Hanover still manage to distinguish themselves from the next. Newcomer Dr. David Ross offers an upbeat and welcoming practice, where patient experience and interaction is just as important as finding the perfect treatment plan. Dr. Jeffrey Singer and his son, Dr. Jonathan Singer, utilize time-tested techniques and combine them with newer methods of treatment to give patients the best of both worlds. Dr. Jason Shoe offers dual treatment; both orthodontics and periodontics (gum treatment). Whatever your smile needs, you’re bound to find it with a Hanover orthodontist! Dr. David Ross is an enthusiastic practitioner, having recently relocated to the Hanover area to take on a 35-year practice from Dr. Hal Cohen, who recently retired. Dr. Ross is ambitious about his work and encourages Hanover residents to schedule a free smile exam. During the exam, he will take digital photographs and x-rays of the teeth to determine whether there are areas that can be improved, and then creates a personalized plan to begin the process. Everything in David Ross Orthodontics is geared toward the patient experience. “It’s not about Invisalign or braces; it’s about how you feel when you walk into the office,” explained Dr. Ross. “It’s about making sure that everyone feels special”. Whether that means making sure his office is available for schoolaged patients before or after school hours, or making sure that there are plenty of appointments available for those who work, Dr. Ross has flexible office hours to accommodate all. There’s no smile that is too young or too old at David Ross Orthodontics. Dr. Ross sees patients as young as seven, and has patients well into their eighties. “We encourage starting to see kids around age 7, which is also what the National Association of Orthodontists recommends,” shared Dr. Ross. He went on to explain that a lot of growth, development, and tooth eruptions can arise at this young age; the sooner he can diagnose those issues the sooner he can treat them.

Dr. Ross is passionate about making sure that every patient experience is a great one, and hopes to have a generational practice when his current patients start to visit with their own children. “I don’t plan on going anywhere – it’s a lifelong commitment for me,” Dr. Ross smiled. “The future is helping more people, providing service to people who need it and trying to be a community leader.” Dr. Ross believes that his patients deserve the best, which is why he has become certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, ensuring that he is educated and informed about the new practices in his field. Only 25% of all U.S. orthodontists have achieved this status. Hanover is fortunate to have more than one board certified orthodontist in the area; Dr. Jeffrey Singer of Singer Orthodontics has also received the prestigious certification. Dr. Singer was board certified in 1989, and volunteered to be recertified in 1996 to ensure that he is providing his patients the best service possible. Singer orthodontics is truly a family affair; Dr. Singer’s son, Dr. Jon Singer, works alongside his father at the family practice. Dr. Jeffrey Singer believes that the father and son dynamic works wonders to improve patient care. “[We] provide patients with an opportunity to hear some of the older tried and true techniques, along with state of the art technology and newer concepts that orthodontists are being taught in school nowadays…it’s a nice blend of the two,” explained Dr. Singer. Dr. Singer believes that working with his son enables them to provide the best service possible. The two consult with one another to create a plan of action for their patients. Each patient requires a personalized plan; just because a treatment worked well for one patient does not necessarily mean that it is best suited best for another. Continued on page 14 discoverHANOVER 2016

13

...continued from page 13 “I like to think that I am mentoring [my son], but I also think that he is mentoring me. And that dynamic together really allows for providing better options to patients,” reflected Dr. Singer. By using their combined experience and knowledge of practices old and new, Singer Orthodontics continues to create the best course of action and outcome for their patients. The patient experience is a major priority at many orthodontic practices, and often children and teens are the primary patients. Dr. Jason Shoe and his staff at F&S Orthodontics work hard to demonstrate how eager they are to please this sometimes hard-to-please audience. Walking into the lobby, patients are greeted with decorations throughout the practice that change over the year; one theme included an underwater world in anticipation of the release of “Finding Dory”. Though the theme was trendy, the enduring motto was “Finding the Truth”, an educational campaign to help kids learn more about their teeth. At F&S Orthodontics, the staff strives to show their appreciation to their patients and ensure that each gets the most out of their experience. F&S hosts annual patient appreciation events and reward programs; if a patient is taking good care of their teeth, getting good grades in school, or participating in community service, they will be rewarded with points that can be converted into a monetary value such as gift cards or a donation to a charity of their choice. “We’re really trying to teach them not only responsibility as far as taking care of themselves, but we want them to also appreciate the importance of potentially giving back to the community,” explained Dr. Shoe. F&S Orthodontics not only stresses the importance of dental health, but also overall health, which is why two doctors at the office specialize in their respective fields. Dr.Shoe is an orthodontist and handles teeth correction, while Dr. Fishel is a periodontist and oversees proper gum health. Dr. Shoe explained that dental health is connected to several other aspects of overall health, including quality of sleep and breathing issues. By fixing dental issues, such as the space and wideness of the roof of a mouth, Dr. Shoe explained that issues such as sleep apnea can be greatly improved and even treated completely. No matter your orthodontist, you can guarantee that your teeth are in capable hands in Hanover. With local orthodontists like these, there is plenty to smile about!

Breeding the Best

Hanover Shoe Farms continues to breed the fastest and happiest horses around. Nestled among the rolling, green hills of south central Pennsylvania, the Hanover Shoe Farms are alive and thriving. The name of the farms makes sense, considering its origins. Racing, and eventually horse breeding, was originally just a hobby of Lawrence B. Sheppard, a junior partner of the Hanover Shoe Company. The racing and breeding of horses soon became a bigger operation than the shoe company, and as a result, Sheppard sold his stock in shoes and focused on developing his horses, making a name for Hanover in the world of horse racing. More than 90 years later, Hanover Shoe Farms now has the largest standardbred horse sales in the world. According to Dale Welk, longtime employee of the farm, they sell between 1,800 and 2,300 horses per year. Most of those sales are from yearlings, young horses that are kept and raised on the farm for a full year before being sold.

18

discoverHANOVER 2016

The process of developing these young foals takes a lot of time and preparation; it takes more than 2 years from the beginning of breeding, incubation, and grooming before these young horses are ready for sale. The gestation period for a horse is 11 months; after they are born, the farm keeps the foals until they are of age. During this time the staff grooms, feeds, and socializes them in order for the foals to become champion race horses. Hanover Shoe Farms no longer race any of their own horses; they are strictly a breeding organization. If they do not sell a horse (due to an injury that may prevent the horse from racing) they keep it for breeding. The farm invests in the happiness of their horses, and was awarded the highest humanitarian award from the veterinarian group AAEP for allowing their retired broodmares, horses used for breeding, to live out their remaining natural lives in comfort at the farm, where they receive the same care as when they were producing foals.

The farm specializes in standardbred horses; those that race with a small jockey in a ‘sulky’, which is a cart attached to a harness. Welk and his co-workers joke about how different sulky racing is from the typical jockey-on-horse racing that most of us imagine when we think of horse races. “Anybody can ride a horse, but it takes skill to drive one,” laughed Welk. Welk emphasized how important it is for people to come to the farms and take the time to learn about horses. He explained that they are strong, powerful creatures who can be unpredictable at times, but given the proper care by experienced hands, they can be gentle giants. Welk said that it is important to interact with foals in situations other than grooming or medical attention. The farm teaches foals that there are benefits that come with human interaction, and taking the proper steps to socialize and tame the horses is a priority.

It is obvious that the employees are truly passionate about their jobs and the horses on the farms. Several members of the Shoe Farm team have been there for over 30 years. Welk has been working for the farm for over 40 years, following in his father’s footsteps of 45 years. Welk started spending his summers at the farm when he was 14. Over time, he has worked in essentially every aspect of the farm, whether that be maintenance or a “desk jockey” doing sales. Welk and the rest of the staff at the Shoe Farms are committed to keeping the farm thriving. Hanover Shoe Farms encourages the community to visit for self-guided tours between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Personalized tours are also available for large groups and can be scheduled in advance. Welk emphasized that between February and June is the perfect time for tours; it’s likely that you’ll see a newly born foal! Are We There Yet?

From Codorus to the campgrounds of Gettysburg, Camping World has the perfect RV for your getaway dreams. It can be hard to get the family together to plan a trip that fits into today’s busy schedules. For those looking for a spontaneous getaway in a reliable space, purchasing an RV and hitting the open road can offer the perfect solution. Daniel Saltzgiver, manager of Camping World in South Hanover, firmly believes that an RV can improve quality of life, no matter your occupation. In simple terms, an RV is a recreational vehicle that is either a motor vehicle and is able to be driven by itself with no assistance from a car, or a towable trailer that is able to be transported when connected to another vehicle. Camping World is the largest retailer of RV’s in the country and has approximately 115 stores, with the local Hanover store located on 2100 Baltimore Pike. Although RV’s have been around for almost 100 years, they are increasing in popularity. Compared to booking expensive hotels and the extensive planning that can go into family trips, an RV is an easy way for families young and old to be spontaneous and ‘just go’. “Tell me what you do, and I’ll show you how an RV can enhance your lifestyle,” says Saltzgiver. “I don’t like calling it the RV lifestyle, because it’s your lifestyle.” Whether your passion is showing dogs at a dog show or visiting friends across the country, an RV can bring the comfort of your home to the road. For those worried about cramped living spaces in RV’s, many models available offer a slide-out feature that, when parked, widens the area inside the RV and allows for more floor space.

20

discoverHANOVER 2016

One misconception of the RV industry is that they are too expensive, ranging in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. While there are some higher-end models available in that price range, Saltzgiver assures that only a few models in that price range are featured in the store. He goes on to point out several brand-new RV’s available in the $15,000 price range with payment plans available. Saltzgiver encourages potential customers to consider the overall value of an RV before purchase. Not only is an RV a portable vacation spot, but some families use the vehicles as second homes, or a guest space to house friends and family when they come to visit. Saltzgiver explains that many of his customers have created long-lasting friendships with fellow RV enthusiasts that they have met at camping spots; many even go on to coordinate their annual trips. Considering a trip in an RV? There are roughly 30 camping grounds within 25 miles of the Hanover area, including camp sites at Codorus Park and Gettysburg. Whether you’re looking for an activity to bring the family together, or just something that is a little out of the ordinary, traveling the road in an RV may be the trip you’ve been waiting for.

If you’re itching to explore new worlds, meet exciting characters, and take a break from it all in the comforts of a great book, look no further; Guthrie Memorial Library has the escape you’re searching for. From summer activities for children, to meeting space for professionals, and even ancestry assistance, Guthrie is a community resource that many have yet to tap.

In the Pennsylvania room, the walls are stocked full of resources pertaining to Pennsylvania history. Visitors are encouraged to use the room to research state history and their own heritage. Kane notes that the Pennsylvania room is only accessible when there is a volunteer present due to the volume of valuable resources; fortunately the library has many dedicated volunteers on staff at all times!

Lisa Kane, director, explains that the library houses many exciting resources that many visitors are unaware of. Everyone in the library has access to free WiFi, as well as newspapers, magazines and other periodicals. The library maintains a membership to ancestry.com; a service available for free to all library members.

The library staff has become known for their summer programming for children. This year’s theme, “Ready, Set, Read”, encourages kids to be active and exercise not only their minds, but their bodies as well. Throughout the summer, the library plays host to dozens of activities, including therapy dogs, appearances from entertainers, the “bug man” who teaches children about insects, magicians, and even a sleep over for stuffed animals.

2. Rewind the clock at Timeline Arcade; the arcade of your childhood is alive and thriving, with 80-plus machines in Downtown Hanover! Gaming is charged by half-hour increments, so you can take your pick from pinball and classic arcade games to modern interactive games, and even flashback gaming consoles. 3. Spend the day at Hickory Falls Family Entertainment Center. Miniature golf, water wars and the go-cart track are summer favorites, while laser tag, rollerball bowling and the indoor play area are hits yearround. When you’re ready for a break, cool off with a gelato from Rita’s Italian Ice, now located in the center.

For teens, library staff modifies the theme by providing books and coordinating excursions. For example, while reading Maze Runner, a story about a teen trying to escape a labyrinth, teens will take a trip to play laser tag and experience the idea of maze running for themselves. “It’s nice for kids to be able to experience the library in other places,” says Kane. “During the summer, a librarian takes the kids to Codorus for a story time and a craft. The Hanover Garden Club ladies tend to the library’s outdoor patio, and work with the kids to teach them how to plant and grow marigolds, while giving library visitors a beautiful and scenic place to escape from the world into a good book.” Guthrie Memorial Library is eager to help the youth in the area explore all possible opportunities and truly utilize all of the services that the library has to offer. A newly created scholarship center is available for teens to research and apply for scholarships, secondary education and careers. Don’t think we’ve forgotten the adults! Guthrie is one of the only libraries in the area that has an adult summer reading club, and also hosts readings by various authors. And for those who truly need a good escape, they even stock adult coloring books. Kane explains that the library’s mission is to become a gathering place where people can conduct their business, host fun activities, and bring their kids. Guthrie has space available for rent, including the roof that is used for the library summer solstice fundraising party with a jazz band and bar. Even outside of the library walls, staff members strive to reach out to the community; offering free delivery to the homebound, and handing out books and bibs to new parents at hospital birthing classes (informing parents on the importance of reading to their baby). “The people here are so willing to help, and they’re always excited,” smiles Kane. “They do it because they love their job.” Guthrie Memorial Library is a place where every staff member wants visitors to get the most out of the services they provide. For more information about upcoming events, to rent a space, or get your free library card, visit yorklibraries.org/Guthrie. Even better, stop by and let a staff member fill you in on all of the exciting things happening at the library.

...everything’s waiting for you! A way of life. Economic and industrial hub. Rich historic center. Glorious food and refreshing drinks. Everything’s waiting for you downtown, and Main Street Hanover is at the heart of the movement. Main Street Hanover is revitalizing the heart of the region by actively seeking additional restaurants, boutiques, retailers, wedding services, professional offices, design and marketing firms and market rate housing options to further enhance the downtown, while promoting those businesses that have been located in the downtown for years. Downtown Hanover supports niche markets by being able to offer locations to businesses that will benefit from the affordable, visible spaces.

Venture downtown to Discover Hanover; dine, shop, and enjoy the area. In addition to an array of boutiques and restaurants, the downtown features galleries and museums, health and wellness shops, entertainment, lodging, historical sites and professional services.

Looking for something to do downtown? Look no further than the Main Street Hanover website. From business listings and restaurant guides to community calendars and events, the recently redesigned website is an easy point of reference for visitors and locals alike.

What spots does the ultimate foodie just have to hit downtown? Where to start! There are so many places to find just the right food for any craving. Hot dogs, sandwiches, pizza, you name it! Texas Hot Lunch and Famous Hot Weiner are obvious favorites for the classic Hanover food. If home cooking is your thing you shouldn’t miss Lucky Spot or Our Family Stock Pot. Pizza at Divino is a must. Subway downtown is a classic sandwich shop, great for a quick lunch. The Hub has such unique creations, you must order their special of the week before it’s gone, it’s usually something incredibly creative. Warehouse Gourmet is my favorite date night spot with my husband; he loves their beer and I love the raspberry linzer bars. If it’s seafood you crave, Big Mike’s Crabhouse and Grill is the place to stop. Their crabcake sandwiches are delish! If you need a coffee fix, you must stop by Reader’s Café or Merlin’s Coffee. As you can see, food is a very important part of downtown Hanover!

Since joining Main Street Hanover as a volunteer in 2013, Justine (Kilkelly) Trucksess has become downtown Hanover’s #1 fan. Take a peek at some of her downtown favorites...

You have a free Saturday and you’re spending it downtown, where are you heading? First I’m heading to the Hanover Market. They are open Saturday mornings, from 6 p.m. to noon. I would get a pretzel breakfast sandwich from the Pretzel Lady, a smoothie from Moon’s Café and stop by Twin Bean Coffee to get a nice dose of caffeine before I begin browsing for produce, meat, candy, gifts and other décor. It’s a great place to buy your groceries for the week. Wonderful local stuff ! Christopher Cringle’s always has something fun and seasonal for the perfect gift. Then I’d probably do some shopping at the stores downtown, like Hanover Clothing, the Arts Guild, Whirled Records, Abithat’s, Diamonds and Designs, Treasures, Scrappy Shique, Sandy Woods, Barrett’s Second-Hand, Janette Jewelers, and so many more! So many to choose from! I’m sure I’d eat somewhere during the day, and I would more than likely end the day at Clarks doing some shoe shopping. If their basement sale is going on, it might take a while! That’s how I’d spend my perfect Saturday! Describe downtown Hanover in one word. Unique!

The Soundtrack of Hanover Family-owned businesses keep Hanover musicians in tune. “There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done, nothing you can sing that can’t be sung”, and with a little help from Hanover music stores, there’s not a song that you can’t learn to play. Music is an important part of people’s lives; it inspires them, allows them to express themselves, and even fills the silence on a long car ride. The music stores of Hanover are committed to providing Hanover residents with the instruments and tools they need to fill the silence and spread the love. Joe Link is the owner of Link’s Music, located in the heart of Downtown Hanover on Baltimore Street. Having opened in 1981, 2016 marks the 35th anniversary of Link’s music. When asked about the most rewarding part of being in the music industry, Link answered, “I love helping people achieve their dream of making music by helping them pick out the right instrument, setting them up with lessons, showing them how to use a band PA system, and offering advice as to where they can begin to play in public.”

“I love helping people achieve their dream of making music.” - Joe Link

A lifetime lover of music, Link himself played in local bands in the 1970’s, and decided to turn his passion into a business. In order to open the store, Link sold his 1975 Harley Davidson Sportster. With that money and a $10,000 loan, Link opened his store despite remarks from music suppliers at a music retailer show saying “good luck, you’re going to need it.” In order to make his dream a reality, Link worked full-time while running the store for four years. He DJ’d at a local bar three times a week to make ends meet, until finally the 28

discoverHANOVER 2016

business began to pick up and became the music supply service it is today. Link’s music specializes in acoustic and electric guitars, offering over 800 guitars in their store, as well as a variety of drum sets and sound equipment. Originally, Link planned to open the store as a venue for bands, like his own, to book practice times. But, as time went on, plans changed and Link’s has become a place for people to purchase instruments, book lessons, and learn how to use sound equipment. Link’s music also offers music lessons and has several full-time instructors and full-time technicians on-site to keep instruments and equipment running the way it should. Link’s offers a variety of music lessons ranging from typical instruments such as the piano or drums, to more unique instruments such as the ukulele and banjo! Link also enjoys giving back to the community, and in his spare time donates his time and equipment to schools and public programs. Link’s Music offers the largest showroom of pro audio, lighting, drums, guitar and bass amplifiers, and DJ equipment in York, Adams and Carroll Counties. So if you’re in the market for any of those things, chances are that you will find exactly what you need at Link’s Music! Link is family oriented, and that is reflected in how he runs his business. The likelihood of running into a member of the Link family in the store is very high; his wife, sister, brother and son all work in the store, with his daughter and sister offering lessons. The entire family is passionate about music and is eager to help anyone achieve their dreams and passion for music. Across Hanover on Wetzel Drive, Menchey Music is also passionate about teaching and helping people grow. Menchey Music was

founded in 1936 by Joel Menchey’s (the current owner) grandfather. Menchey’s grandfather retired in 1982 and the management team took over the business for 13 years until 1995 when Joel was presented with the opportunity to buy and take over the business as the ‘new kid on the block’. Joel Menchey has worked hard to get the store back to its roots as an instrument provider for children in bands and orchestras. It is also a full-service music shop with shops specializing in instruments like pianos and high end bow-stringed instruments. There are seven stores in all; five in state and two out of state. This many stores allows Menchey’s to provide lessons and rent or sell instruments to as many people as possible, especially to children starting off in the music programs at their schools. “Our goal is to provide an instrument for every kid who wants to play, even some who don’t necessarily want to play,” laughed Menchey. The business does all that it can to inspire more musicians in this world, which is why it focuses its donating efforts on giving children the opportunity to play music. They participate in the York Cultural Alliance Campaign, the Strand Capital, and multiple school booster campaigns. Menchey Music also partners with after-school programs to provide instruments to underprivileged children who have a passion for music, but may not have the means to afford an instrument. Affordability is also of importance to Menchey Music, which is why they offer rental and rent-to-own programs. Whatever your financial situation, Menchey Music can work with you to figure out exactly which program is right for your needs. Aside from the typical orchestra grade instruments, Menchey’s also offers a unique selection of different instrument variations. The store has several models of electric strings available from both NS Design and Yamaha providers. The unique looking instruments are perfect for anyone interested in high performance bowed electric instruments or for someone who wants to play an instrument a little less mainstream. The store has invested a lot into their bow and string gallery and offer models from the small viola to the lumbering cello. Menchey not only runs a music business, but he also plays guitar semiprofessionally! Menchey has been performing acoustic guitar and vocal shows since 1993. With his extensive knowledge of being both the musician and the provider for other musicians, he has a unique perspective on the music business. A trait he has in common with Joe Link from Link’s Music. So whether Hanover residents want to rock out on a guitar from Link’s Music or perform in an orchestra with one of the instruments from Menchey Music, they will always find a music store with dedicated people to help find the perfect fit for them. Whatever your music style or preference, the Hanover music stores are available to make your music dreams a reality.

Get Your Sip On

Hanover has quickly become a sipping destination for wine and craft beer enthusiasts, alike. From the Leggy Blonde at Warehouse Gourmet Bistro & Brewpub, to the Pigeon Hill Punch at High Rock Winery, there’s a sip for everyone in Hanover. Here’s our guide through some local favorites of the grape and hop variety. Adams County Winery A short drive to the west brings the traveling connoisseur to the South Mountains overlooking Gettysburg where Adams County Winery has been making wine for over 40 years. The climate is ideal for grape growing, and in turn produces quality wines; dry to sweet reds and whites, fruit wines, sparkling red, and even a chocolate wine. Home to the official wines of the 150th Battle of Gettysburg, Adams County Winery boasts Rebel Red and Tears of Gettysburg as their most popular red and trademark white. Aldus Brewing Co. Just a mile from downtown, a former factory building has found new life as a brewery. The owners of Aldus Brewing Co. have set their sights on creating craft beer that is easy to drink. Their trio of “accessible brews” includes American Blonde Ale, Olde Factory Amber IPA and Wee Dame, a Scottish Wee-Heavy. All three are available in growlers and kegs, as well as on tap in the brewpub where they are served alongside Pennsylvania-produced wines and tasty fare. Keep an eye out for bottles, rolling out soon! Center Square Brewing Striving to incorporate fresh and local ingredients, Center Square Brewing creates oneof-a-kind beers with a local flair. Located in the Altland House in Abbottstown, the in-house brewery features hand-made craft beer brewed in the 3-barrel brew house. Four rotating beers are on tap, with season specialties available as well. Try the Alt, a traditional German Altbier made of five different malts, Hallertau and Pearle hops, and Dusseldorf Alt yeast. High Rock Winery Tucked away in the Pigeon Hills, High Rock Winery produces the epitome of local, sweet wines. Their “Down Home Country Wines” are produced from locally-grown red and black raspberries, strawberries and blackberries picked by the winemaker herself, and the grapes are grown locally in York County and northern Pennsylvania. The Pigeon Hill Punch, a blend of Niagara Chambourcin and Seyval grapes, is worth the trip to the hills, where guests can enjoy the wine while enjoying the peacefulness of the woods, and deer and wildlife that tiptoe past.

Miscreation Brewing Company The Spweach Impwediment, a wheat beer with a slight hint of peach, is a lighter choice and probably a safe bet for newbies to the craft beer scene. Frank’n Stout, literally a miscreation according to co-owner Mark Mathias, is a unique offering that pairs the flavor of jalapeno with coffee notes that leaves fans coming back for more. Find them on the square, and ask about a to-go cup to accompany your walk through downtown! Something Wicked Brewing Company Their four flagship beers cover a broad spectrum of styles, sure to tempt and tease your pallet. Sinful, Virtue, Charity and Chaos are always on tap, but don’t forget to try a brew from their rotating taps and pair it with a Revonah pretzel log. From IPA’s to stouts and more, something wicked is always brewing at Something Wicked! Located in the former Moose building on Broadway, you’ll find the hidden entrance to Something Wicked in the alley behind the building. Warehouse Gourmet Bistro & Brewpub Warehouse Gourmet was the first on the Hanover brewing scene, expanding their sit-down bistro to add a brew pub in 2012. Customers will find a well-balanced variety of beers to compliment Warehouse’s legendary fare, from pale ales to porter to stout. Leggy Blonde and Small Town Brown are Hanover favorites, and customers often stop by to fill up a growler for home consumption. Looking for more? Sip, savor and explore to your heart’s content on the Mason-Dixon Wine Trail. Sponsored by the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the trail includes 20 family-owned locations in southern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland making tantalizing wines and refreshing ciders. The Flavor of Family At La Cucina, it’s all about family and great food. A love for food and a strong Italian heritage sounds like the recipe for a great restaurant, and luckily for Hanover, the results of that recipe took the form of La Cucina Restaurant. In business since 2001, La Cucina has become a long-standing favorite. Owner Armando Malvone first opened La Cucina on Eisenhower Drive to honor his heritage, and satisfy his passion for good food; both eating and cooking it, that is.

“This space was perfect; the right size, kitchen and everything. The footprint was perfect. I love this location. Being on the south end of town, we have people coming from Maryland and we also get our regulars back, and plus some new customers that have become regulars now. We have a strong customer base.”

“I learned to cook from my mom, and I just have a great love for food and cooking. I love seeing all the colors of the food when cooking and I just really enjoy every aspect of food,” Malvone reminisced.

La Cucina is still serving the original menu with very little changes, along with daily specials. A year into business in the new location, Malvone has hopes to expand the facility to serve private parties up to 50 people. He also plans to eventually sell wine and beer, and create a lounge where customers can relax while enjoying great food and drinks.

After 10 years of business, Malvone decided to lease the restaurant location and move to a smaller location within the same center, where he could focus on take-out and catering. Just 3 years later, Malvone knew it was time to take a break from the business.

Although he’s fully immersed in the restaurant business once again, Malvone hasn’t lost sight of his desire to spend time with his family. His wife, Christina, and their sons all do their own part to make the restaurant a success, along with a great staff.

“We wanted to continue to provide our catering and takeout which is why we moved to the smaller location, but after a while I missed the people and a big working space. And, I wanted to spend more time with my family,” explained Malvone.

“Our customers are taken care of when they dine with us. We have a really great staff; they are properly trained and they love to be here. They are truly like family. We have a lot of fun,” says Malvone.

During his time away from the restaurant business, Malvone did just that. While focusing on his family, he also kept an eye on restaurant locations in the Hanover area, hoping that a great space would open up. After a year of watching and waiting, the perfect spot came along by way of Baltimore Street, and in May 2015, La Cucina opened its doors once again.

A transplant from Brooklyn, New York at the age of five, Malvone has come to consider himself as a Hanover local, much like his popular restaurant. “I am rooted here. I love it here.”
