The Chamber Bids Farewell to President Gary Laird After 21 Years! This February, we will bid a bittersweet farewell to the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce President, Gary Laird as he will be going into retirement. Gary began his work at the Chamber in 2002 and has been crucial to the Chamber’s success over the past 21 years. When asked about his time at the Chamber, Gary said, “I feel good about the work of the Chamber over the past 20 years. We have had great support from our Board of Directors and Chamber members which makes it incredibly helpful when it comes to executing the organization's workplan. Our focus has evolved over the years. We do less social networking than when I started at the Chamber and concentrate more on economic development efforts in the community. A key initiative that stands out to me is workforce development, including the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. We have also been very pleased with the consistent growth and

popularity of our Leadership Hanover program and the development of the Discover Hanover® brand. Back in the mid-to-late 2000’s, the Chamber committed a lot of resources to the revitalization of downtown Hanover, so it is very rewarding to have a stake in the renaissance that has been occurring downtown for the past several years.” During his retirement, Gary plans to do some traveling around the country and plans to further explore and experience other local communities in South Central, PA. Gary had the following to say about his favorite memories with the Chamber: “I have had a lot of great experiences and memories during the past twenty-one years with the Chamber. I’ve worked with some very talented individuals and working with new staff members has always been rewarding.Watching them grow into their roles and contribute to the success of the organization is the best.” Gary’s contributions to the Chamber have been essential to its success and his presence will be missed by all staff and members. All of us at the Chamber wish Gary the best in his retirement and thank him for the incredible work over the past 21 years!

The 2024 copy of Discover Hanover® will be released this month! We are excited to share the new look for the magazine. Marketing & Public Relations Manager and Editor-inChief, Katie Bream, had the following to say about the publication: " The goal of this year’s Discover Hanover® magazine was to really highlight how far Hanover has come! While we will always recognize Hanover as a manufacturing town booming with commerce and prosperity, we also turn our eyes to the future and realize just how much this South-Central PA community has grown. In the 16th edition of Discover Hanover Magazine, you will see an array of beautiful imagery that captures the spirit of the Greater Hanover area. I would like to thank all of our local businesses who allowed us to come and take photographs and make this edition of Discover Hanover Magazine the best one yet!" The digital version of the magazine can be found at discoverhanoverpa.org

As part of the project to place the historical markers in town, led by Matt Jackson and Justine Trucksess, I have been getting more involved with Hanover and everything it has to offer when you scratch beneath the surface. I am born and raised here and want to see the quality of life for the our community evolve. Therefore, I was motivated to become a board member for the Chamber. I believe that the Hanover Chamber of Commerce adds value to the community by hosting networking events and promoting Hanover as business-friendly community for entrepreneurs, for professionals and for workers. My favorite thing about Hanover is that I enjoy bumping into people I know wherever I go – friends, co-workers, old acquaintances. My favorite things to do in the area are hiking and biking at Codorus and the Hanover Trolley Trail, going downtown to eat, and volunteering my time through Kiwanis, Hanover YMCA Board, and YCTRA." Thank you, Brandon, for joining the Board of Directors! The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to work with you throughout your term.

Signature Events: Edits from December 2023 Chamber Connection

We would like to acknlowedge that we had made an error in the date for one of our signature events in the December 2023 Chamber Connection Newsletter. The date for Snack Town Brewfest was listed as the same day as Snack Town Street Fair, which is not the case and was an oversight on our part. Additionally, the date for the Annual Golf Outing has also been changed since the print copy of the December 2023 newsletter was released. Here are the current and correct dates for our three signature events: 55th Annual Golf Outing - May 30, 2024 Snack Town Street Fair - July 13, 2024 Snack Town Brewfest - September 14, 2023 We apologize for any confusion. The correct dates are also listed in the events section of this newsletter as well as the digital copy of the December 2023 newsletter.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Olivia's House: A Grief and Loss Center for Children Since opening the doors of their Hanover facility at 101 Baltimore Street in 2013, Olivia’s House: A Grief and Loss Center for Children has accomplished a great deal in our community. Recognized across the U.S. as one of the best independent centers in the country, Olivia’s House offers no-cost grief services such as: individualized grief consultations, educational and social support programs for grieving children, young adults, and their families, individual and family grief counseling referrals to specialized professionals, and a public lending library containing thousands of resources on child, teen, and adult grief. While 1 in 7 children will lose a parent or sibling before the age of 20, childhood loss remains a painfully overlooked and under-attended to issue. However, thanks to our generous community, 10 years ago a house was built to make a difference in the lives of children and families affected by the death of a loved one. Olivia’s

House believes that no child should grieve alone, and it has been an honor to share that mission right in the heart of Hanover. Olivia’s House Hanover is proud to be a warm and welcoming place where people struggling with grief can find the information and resources that they so desperately need, right at their neighborhood grief center. If you, or someone you know, needs help after the death of a loved one, support for your family is only a phone call away.

Strengthening its surgical oncology services in the Harrisburg region, UPMC recently opened the Surgical Oncology Center on Technology Parkway in Mechanicsburg and successfully recruited two highly skilled surgical oncologists. region. UPMC surgical oncologists, including Zureikat, helped to pioneer the robotic Whipple and have performed more robotic Whipple procedures than any other institution in the country. Robotic technology allows surgeons to perform complex surgery with more precision than conventional methods, to improve recovery, reduce pain, and improve visualization during surgery. Chu and AlMasri have had extensive training in minimally invasive roboticassisted surgery that will offer UPMC oncology patients added treatment and recovery benefits, all close to home. “UPMC Hillman Cancer Center has been expanding services in central Pennsylvania for over five years, and adding surgical oncology services will help broaden and amplify patient care,” said Adam Dimm, vice president UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Central Pa. “We look forward to seeing Dr. Chu and Dr. AlMasri provide exceptional surgical care for our region’s oncology patients.” Chu received his medical degree and completed his residency in general surgery from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. His fellowship in surgical oncology was completed at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, Santa Monica, Calif. Chu is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and brings over 20 years of experience to the department.
