Chamber Recognizes National Manufacturing Day The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with its partners in business, education and government, recognized manufacturing week Oct. 3 through 7. Manufacturing week is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Throughout the week, local partners in education, manufacturing and business recognized the significance of manufacturing to the local economy and celebrated the strong business and education partnerships that have forged in our community. On Weds., Oct. 5, students from South Western and Hanover Public school districts participated in panel discussions with employees in the manufacturing sector, allowing the students a glimpse into education paths, skills, salary and workforce demand associated with careers in manufacturing. Later in the day, these students, along with students from Spring Grove, New Oxford and Delone Catholic high schools, had the opportunity to tour local manufacturing facilities at Utz Quality Foods, Snyder’s-Lance, RH Sheppard and Martin’s Potato Chips. “Out of the students who participated today, if 10 decide to pursue a career in manufacturing and return to live and work in the Hanover area, it will have been a success,” said Gary Laird, President, Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. “Our goal is to show young people that there is career potential here in Hanover, and help them to develop relationships with businesses in the area who may go on to employ them upon graduation.” On Fri., Oct. 7, Ox Industries hosted the Chamber, and representatives from area schools, higher education, legislators and manufacturers for a roundtable to discuss the significance of

manufacturing and the need for a strong local workforce. Kevin Hayward, CEO, Ox Industries, reinforced the value of workforce-education partnerships, such as Diversified Occupation courses offered at many local schools. Several Ox employees have been hired as a result of shadowing or school-to-work opportunities during their high school years. Dr. Susan Seiple, Assistant Superintendent, Hanover Public School District, and Lisa Dennis, Career Counselor, South Western School District, highlighted the opportunities for students in their respective school districts wishing to pursue a career in manufacturing and skilled trades. continued on page 7

STEAM Enhances Learning for HHS Students Big things are happening at Hanover High School (HHS); this year, the Nighthawks are introducing a new part of their curriculum called the STEAM academy. Talented and creative students will be able to take courses in entertainment technology, robotics, design and engineering, biotechnology, and music technology. Students with an interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics will have the opportunity to customize their learning experience and focus on developing skills that will aid them in those particular career fields. These new courses will be offered as part of the regular school curriculum; students become eligible to select these courses with a teacher recommendation. The selection will not be based on a student’s GPA, but instead will be judged on their passion for specific subjects, work ethic, existing talents and skill as well as any other qualities that make them stand out as someone who will be successful in the academy. The school will utilize Project-Based learning, so students will have a more hands-on, trial and error learning experience rather than through lecture. Students who complete four required skill courses in addition to a culminating project course will receive a certificate for completing the series of courses in their selected field of study. The high school will use the Zulama curriculum from Carnegie Mellon University, raising education to a college-level. Students can expect to make professional connections through the academy that will give them a leg up in competitive career fields. HHS is currently working to set up student tours, opportunities for students to shadow, and even internships with local businesses. The school is also looking to schedule guest speakers and experts in the field to educate students in the STEAM academy either personally or virtually, through a presentation studio that

the school has in their Integrative Learning Center. The school has completely renovated three old classrooms to make room for state of the art technology, such as motion capture technology used to create sports games like NBA 2k16 for the students to utilize and create their own videogames. They have also installed a recording studio for students interested in their music technology program. One room will be used for engineering students to create new designs; this room will be located next to the schools preexisting woodshop and metal shop classes, so that any designs created by the students can then be manufactured in the building. The third room is designed for students interested in CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) and will have an entire wall filled with monitors so that students can project their images as one big picture or several images at one time.

Let’s get

Well

acquainted.

WellSpan Occupational Health welcomes Andrea DiFiore, PA-C, to Hanover.

The renovations have been funded by a donation from Hanover Shoe Farms. With support from local businesses and a dedicated staff, HHS hopes to produce young and qualified professionals with a better understanding of their career field interests. This knowledge will help students choose how to further their education after high school and the experience that they gain from the academy will give them the confidence to take the lead in a new job or college course.

Ms. DiFiore joins WellSpan’s team of experienced occupational health providers who offer quality, cost-effective services to help prevent and treat workplace injuries and illnesses.

HHS will host an open house on Nov. 16 from 6:45-8:30 p.m. Visit the STEAM Academy and tour the ILC, Welding Lab and Foundry. Contact Lois Dubbs for information at 637-9000 ext. 225.

Ring in the Holidays with Christmas on Main Street

“Strings of street lights, even stop lights, blink a bright red and green, as the shoppers rush home with their treasures...” The familiar old Bing Crosby tune will come alive in Hanover again this year, as Main Street Hanover prepares for the holiday season. Gather your family and mark the calendar for the exciting annual events in downtown Hanover.

Dressed in Holiday Style

Several local organizations will collaborate again this year in the annual ‘hanging of the greens’. Keep your eyes open during November as the familiar decorations appear on lamp posts throughout downtown and Eisenhower Drive. Downtown, the Hanover Exchange Club, Hanover Rotary, Kiwanis Club, and Lions Club will deck the four quadrants in Center Square with holiday cheer.

This is Santa’s Big Scene

The festivities officially kick off on Fri., Nov. 25 with the annual Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony. Santa will make his arrival to Hanover during the 9 a.m. parade, and set up shop in his cabin on the square for the remainder of the holiday season to greet families and children as he has traditionally done for generations. The Christmas Committee is looking for participants for the parade; scout troops, dance studios, church and civic organizations, service clubs and businesses are invited to take part. Children ages 6-12 are invited to enter the bike decorating contest. For information and to enter, contact Janet Black at 637-1768 or visit www.hanoverpasantacabin.com After the parade, explore downtown retailers and restaurants before returning at 6 p.m. for the tree lighting ceremony, featuring live musical entertainment. All activities are free and open to the public.

It’s Christmas Time in the City

Remember to pick up your passport for the 3rd Annual Christmas Tree Wars! Many downtown merchants will again be participating in this unique and festive contest. Get your passports at the Chamber Office or any participating location and see the trees lit up for the first time on Nov. 25 before and after the tree lighting ceremony.

The traditional Hanover Christmas events bring thousands of participants into downtown for a season of family fun. As we approach the upcoming 80th Anniversary of Santa’s Cabin, it is more important than ever that these Christmas traditions continue for the next generation.
