Updates from Chamber President, Gary Laird

Planning for the Future

The Hanover Chamber will be developing a new strategic plan in 2023. The last strategic plan update was in 2019. We want to hear from our members and the community about the role of the Chamber moving forward. Our business has changed since the pandemic so its appropriate that we find out what is important to our members and adjust our focus accordingly. As we begin the new year you will see more information being communicated about the planning process and we would like to hear from you. If you have an interest and would like to be involved, contact Gary Laird at the Chamber, glaird@hanoverchamber.com.

Strengthen U.S. Energy Production

The Hanover Chamber was one of 218 Chambers and associations from across the country to advocate for greater domestic energy production. The Chambers specifically called for ending the ban on new oil and natural gas exploration on federal lands and waters, restring cancelled lease sales, and adopting a 5-year plan for offshore oil and gas development that allows the U.S. to fully leverage its offshore energy potential.

“With analysts predicting a return to high oil and natural gas prices this fall and winter, businesses are bracing for even more pressure,” said Marty Durbin, president of the U.S. Chamber’s Global Energy Institute.

National Apprenticeship Week

National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration established by the U.S. Department of Labor where registered

apprenticeship champions highlight the importance of apprenticeship, a proven and industry-driven training model that provides a critical talent pipeline that can help address some of our nation’s pressing workforce challenges. Registered apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, receive progressive wage increases, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential. Since 2017, the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce has sponsored a group apprenticeship program for multiple employers in the community. The Chamber's model is open to any employer in a variety of different industries. To learn more about the Chamber's apprenticeship program and workforce development initiatives, contact Gary Laird at glaird@hanoverchamber.com.

Foundation for Free Enterprise Education

The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce received a commendation from the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education for our support and dedication to the mission of annual goals for their Foundation.

The mission of the Foundation is to provide economic education programs that celebrate the American free enterprise system that are synonymous with excellence. In order for these goals to be a reality, dedicated partnering organizations are essential to help promote, develop and present programming annually to the youth of Pennsylvania. Business and Education Partnerships are Building a Talent Pipeline in Hanover

New Oxford High School has benefited tremendously from the work of the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. Three years ago, NOHS opened a state of the art Tech center rivaling many Career and Technology Centers in the way of layout, program offerings, facilities and equipment. The former CVSD Superintendent, Dr. Russel Greenholt, along with the Board of School Directors, administrators, community business partners, faculty, staff, parents and students made this possible for future NOHS students to experience an incredible level of instruction and practice. Being educators, sometimes our business acumen is limited and that is where Gary Laird and the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce staff helped NOHS to make some key connections. NOHS students not only have a unique opportunity given the facility and programs, they also benefit from job shadowing, pre-apprenticeships, special programming cooperative education and many other one-off experiences that have been facilitated by the introductions made by the Chamber staff to area businesses. The connections came from already established ongoing meetings between community businesses and the Chamber, individual visitations and targeted introductions. The Chamber already had the framework in place for NOHS to capitalize on these budding relationships and offered feedback and challenged NOHS to evaluate how we use the facility and what types of outcomes are possible. None of this is necessarily “required” of the Chamber but all of it is greatly appreciated by NOHS as there are times where, quite frankly, “we don’t know what we don’t know.” Joseph Connolly, Career Counselor at NOHS said “we would not be at where we are today if it were not for the Chamber. Sure, we likely would have gotten here eventually, but they helped to accelerate the pace at which we were able to connect with and begin partnering with local businesses and I am grateful for their willingness to help shepherd us through this process.” Gary Laird, President of the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce said “NOHS is truly committed to providing students with career pathway exploration opportunities outside the classroom and have worked hard to understand the needs of local business. They made a significant financial investment in the Tech center to provide students with the training necessary to address the skills gaps that exist in local industry in occupations like welding, machining, and mechatronics. Our future is bright thanks to the leadership and commitment of NOHS”.
