TERPENE OF THE MONTH

CARYOPHYLLENE

The terpene caryophyllene Also called beta-caryophyllene or BCP, can be found in aromatic oils like rosemary and clove oil, and in nature, it’s most commonly found in hops, cloves, black pepper, oregano, cinnamon, and basil. It’s responsible for the slight bite of pungency associated with smelling cracked pepper. Beta-Caryophyllene molecular structure is unique; it is more significant than other terpenes and contains a rare cyclobutene ring not found in any other cannabis terpene.

This past August the Happy Munkey team once again did the impossible, putting on a first of its kind two night cannabis takeover of the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit on Pier 36 in NYC! Each night with about 600 of our Happy Munkey friends and family, we hosted a next level consumption lounge experience in partnership with the Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit that included a 420 goodie bag, a mocktail, and access to the exhibit’s 70,000sqft immersive art playground. We are proudly the first people

in New York to put on an event like this and it’s not only historical for the cannabis industry and Happy Munkey, but for the New York City social scene Interactive cannabis experiences, cannabis going mainstream! We don’t need to feel like criminals anymore. Cannabis events should be and will be a large part of the nightlife and social gatherings as cannabis continues going mainstream! A POC owned company like Happy Munkey, going from Legacy to Legal, with no investors, is proof that when the community and the people believe, anything is possible.

Let’s show some love to the very talented and funny, Jonnae Thompson. I got to meet her when I’m started collaborating with the All Def Cannabis team and I loved her energy from the beginning. This up-and-coming badass has been spotlighted on many platforms including All Def, Tru TV, and Revolt TV. She is an Artist and she makes sure she lets herself not be boxed in. A comedian, actress; singer, and model. This Multitalented Amazon Goddess has no fear of letting her Black Girl Magic shine as she empowers other women. I asked Jonnae, who is also a stoner chick, why she enjoys making content about weed and how it has helped her. This is what she had to say.

“I have found a new community of amazing artists, educators, entrepreneurs, and game-changers through my work as a content creator in the world of cannabis.

I am enjoying learning from cannabis aficionados each time I can participate on a panel, catch an informational post on my fellow cannabis comrades' social media, tour a cannabis facility, and more.

Learning about the cultivation and the culture has been nothing short of amazing. I’m so happy to be here.”

Protect your cannabis brand in the Tri-State

With New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut all legalizing adult use cannabis within months of each other, it’s only a matter of time before each state begins the process of accepting applications for adult use cannabis licenses. Though each state will differ in terms of procedures and timelines, 2022 is sure to bring a new batch of cannabis operators. As eager applicants begin to prepare for the issuance of cannabis applications in the tri-state area, it is imperative that they retain a long-term view.Though I expect the first round of licenses issued in each state to be conservative in number along with competitive licensing schemes (mixed with lotteries and conditional licensing routes), that will not always be the case. As new companies are born from sheer demand, a plethora of cannabis brands will begin to saturate the market in the tri-state.

Part of my practice as an intellectual property attorney is strategically advising my clients of how to protect, enforce, maintain, and capitalize on their brands and their brands’ goodwill. Unfortunately, while companies place a huge emphasis on tangible assets, intangible assets such as intellectual property get ignored until an issue arises (and that’s when I get called in). Intellectual property (“IP”) refers to

creations of the mind that derive from human creativity. IP law was born out of the need to promote the furtherance of new technology, artistic creations and inventions by providing owners with the rights to their IP. For the purpose of this article, I will focus on the facet of IP that most companies are familiar with—their trademark. If you own a company and/ or sell goods and/or offer a service, then you unknowingly already own a common law trademark! A trademark is a word, name, symbol, device or combination thereof used by a person or entity to identify and distinguish their goods or services from those sold by others. A trademark is also used to indicate the source of goods, even if that source is unknown. Besidesinstant source recognition, a trademark also benefits consumers in that it provides incentive for companies to (1) inform the public regarding the nature, origin and quality of the goods and to (2) maintain quality consistent with reputation.

Federally protected trademarks, which should always be the goal, are issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO is a federal agency that strictly adheres to federal guidelines and, because cannabis is still a Scheduled 1 “drug”, the USPTO has taken the stance that cannabis plant-touching goods and

PAGE 14

services, such as dispensaries and edibles, cannot be afforded federal trademark protection for their brand names. As such, no company in the U.S. has federal trademark protection for their cannabis plant-touching goods and services. Until federal prohibition is lifted, federal trademark protection is not possible for U.S. cannabis companies. Ancillary cannabis companies however, such as lawyers, accountants, consultants, educators etc. assisting cannabis companies (aka non-plant-touching cannabis companies) can acquire federal trademark protection.

Although federal trademark protection should always be the ultimate goal, cannabis companies must get creative and exhaust all other routes of possible protection to comfortably build their goodwill and simultaneously prevent others from using their trademark. This includes...

1) trademarking other aspects of your business that are not plant touching, such as your website, educational services, apparel etc.

2) obtaining copyright protection for artistic works of arts such as logos; and

3) utilizing state trademark protection.

The U.S. is a “first-to-use” trademark regime which means whoever is the first to use a trademark in interstate commerce is presumed to be the owner.

For this reason, it’s imperative that companies protect their trademark as soon as possible to avoid the hassle of having to initiate a legal battle over who owns the trademark. As the tri-state cannabis industry continues to evolve, companies must be thinking seriously about how they plan to expand . Without proper protection, businesses leave room for third parties to stake their claim in their trademark.

Keeping a long-term view in mind, it would behoove any new cannabis company to understand that eventually, it will be the integrity of their brand that will differentiate them from the many brands that will form and the ones that currently exist. For this reason, identification, inventory, and protection is critical.

We Are Done Deferring

“Harlem”

What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?”

This edition is different - special! We are acknowledging the fourth year of Happy Munkey’s existence. This is a celebration of vision, work and most importantly joy. With decades of accumulated trauma , it’s imperative that we uplift the ways in which the culture has managed to rebel and thrive in spite of oppression. New Yorkers are enjoying a new freedom with consumption and hoping for more progress and the realization of a promise made by lawmakers to repair harm and invest in us and our communities. We have paid way too much and for far too long.

We are owed the ability to consider all the amazing possibilities of cannabis without fear of being set up for additional hardships.

My colleagues and I took a little time to dream and imagine what would be needed to realize this vision. With a new Governor (the first woman!) and the following names, Chris Alexander (Executive Director, Office of Cannabis Management) and Tremaine Wright (Chair of Cannabis Control Board) tasked with leading the regulatory process, our priorities must be known. We offer the following for your consideration.

PAGE 16

Amnesty - We usually hear about clemency being granted, but that doesn’t go far enough. Clemency is showing leniency but the costs that have been paid with lives and time deserves much more than that. Right now, President Biden has the fate of 4,400 people who are serving federal time for nonviolent cannabis related offenses, but were conditionally released due to COVID, in his hands. He must decide if they are able to continue on their journey of reacclimating to society and connecting with friends and family or if they must return to prison to complete their sentence. Complete freedom from prosecution and remembrance of cannabis activities and acquired assets is needed today!

Rights Restoration - How many of us know of or have family who lost public housing access or financial assistance due to cannabis consumption or possession? What hardships have they endured because of this? If cannabis is legal than those who have lost access to housing assistance, education grants, voting must be made whole. We all, regardless of socioeconomic status or living choices, must have the ability to fully engage in the cannabis industry.

Funding Reallocation - Stock language exists that focuses on the use of tax revenue generated from adult use to fund social equity and community reinvestment funds. The MRTA does include language that reinvests fees from medical operators into equity programs, however we want to go a step further. Now that the war on drugs and the enforcement of cannabis criminalization is unnecessary, associated funds must be reallocated to repairing individual and community harm.

Deterrence of Continued Cannabis Criminalization - Police departments were incentivized to make arrests and to confiscate assets. We know the realities of stop and frisk all too well and remember the evening news showing money, jewelry and homes taken. Present day, in cities where cannabis is legal, arrests and harassment still occurs. The only way to reverse this norm is to implement consequences. Law enforcement must be held accountable for causing citizens trauma and the wasting of taxpayers money.

Equitable Service Access - Historically Blacks, LatinX and Indigenous communities have experienced discrimination within all systems and institutions. Even with access to the necessary resources, oftentimes the hoops we are made to go through for what is ultimately acquired makes one question the investment. In order to ensure minority owned businesses thrive, equitable access to services such as banking, insurance and real estate, as well the necessary support to navigate processes is a must.

In acknowledgement of Happy Munkey’s fourth year, an idea that was molded and made into reality, I implore you to keep dreaming and defer no more!

Perfect Temp An Introduction Into the world of infrared Thermometers

Greetings fellow Happy Munkey people. This month I shall review three of the most prominent infrared thermometers to aid you in your quest for the perfect dab.

You may be asking yourself why do I need an infrared thermometer for dabbing? Without a thermometer it is difficult to know when to apply your desired concentrate onto the hot banger for a fulfilling terp experience. Some bangers are thermochromic and have a yellow like substance inside the banger. When the banger is heated and reaches the right temperature this substance changes color from yellow to orange. Whitney Harmon created the first thermochromic banger and for$250 you can purchase one online. These thermochromic bangers are your only option if you are thermometer aversed.

The first dabbing thermometer I used was a Temptech. Temptech is perhaps the most popular thermometer for dabbing enthusiasts: 3D printed ,a micro USB port for charging, simply place your hot banger over the sensor and it measures the temperature. My only critique of the temptech is that the further away the banger is from the sensor the less accurate it will be. This thermometer is only $65 and available at https://temptech.org/collections/all.

Another one of my favorite thermometers is the Terpometer. At just about the size of a magic marker, you can place the sensor where you want to place the dab and with no need to worry about inaccurate readings due to distance. Another great feature of the terpometer is the auto shut off for inactivity. For bucket style bangers the

PAGE 18

Terpometer is a great choice. However, if you like terp slurp style dabs it can be difficult to obtain accurate temperature readings. The terpometer is available at https://www.theterpometer.com/shop and costs $120.

The final type of thermometer is the flexible neck style. Dabrite created the first type of flexible thermometer. I’m a big fan of the Dabrite because its flexible neck can adjust to any style of banger. This bendable design means that, inaccuracies between the sensor and the banger are kept to a minimum. Dabrite recommends that the sensor be at a at least one inch away from the banger. The Dabrite also has an automatic shut off after five minutes

of inactivity, just like the Terpometer. Temptech has also created their own new flexible neck style thermometer but I still prefer the Dabrite. The Dabrite has interchangeable silicone covers along with special edition versions from 710Labs and J.P. Toro glass. My only issue with the Dabrite is its retail price of $249. For comparison, the Temptech flexible neck is $212. Dabrite is available on their website.

Overall, your choice of thermometer is ultimately determined by your budget. If you are looking for something cheap, the traditional Temptech is the way to go. However, if you want the best thermometer available your best bet is the flexible neck style Dabrite.

The Dank Commander

It’s the chocolate skin for me, mixed with the ambition of a hustler; this strain took me from air to water in the blink of an eye. Let me tell you about this Dank Commander & why it’s some one- hitterquitter.

Have you ever smoked some weed but just can’t figure out why you like it besides the fact that it’s weed? At first, that’s how I feel about this guy- I mean strain; I like it but I’m not exactly sure why to be real. I've been thinkin to myself that maybe this is what being on the rebound feels like. I don’t know if my brain will even allow me to fully look at any other weed right now, cause damn it I’m still stuck on that wack ass glue. No need to worry about me though, because I stopped smoking that glue a long time ago, but damn that smoke lingers. I know the linger is only because I feel bad for not seeing the glue as I was hoping I would. I don’t pay no real mind to none of these dudes so I guess I missed that boat lol. And I don’t know what it is about conceited men in diamond chokers but they keep

finding their way back to me. Speaking of going back, let me finish my story about the Dank Commander…

So after hanging with a group of friends one night I found myself at attention. I should’ve just let the Dank Commander walk me to my car, put the chairs in the truck, then got in my car & left but no, I was 3 glasses of this candy wine in, and when the Dank Commander said “You don’t need to drive, let’s go back upstairs and smoke 1 more” I followed. Upstairs I had one, two or three more glasses of wine (mind ya business cause I stopped counting and so should you lol ). It tasted like candy, I see why he keeps it around. I stayed in my chair & kept my hands to myself as usual. I never make 1st moves, plus I promise I had no real plans to make no real moves or anything anyway, just hang out til this candy wine that he kept serving me wore off. Since I was already five glasses of wine in, I figured I’d chill & play it cool... Let’s not play y’all, I knew I didn’t need to drive any time soon but I also never planned to stay.

PAGE 24

I felt like he read right through me & my 5 glasses of wine when he said “ Go to the drawer get you some nightclothes, take a shower and get in bed.” I mean I froze for at least a few minutes y’all. I don’t think I spoke or moved for some time. I didn’t know what to say & I looked at him and he just said it again then hit the weed and smiled. We are not even about to talk about how gorgeous this man's smile was. Plus, for me, there is just something about a man who knows how to give commands, especially when they’re good ones.

I dared not resist those commands and so I did as I was told. I slowly got up from the table, went into his room, and grabbed a T-shirt from the drawer. At this point, I’m standing in the bathroom with shower water running thinking to myself, “Did this nigga just give me directions to go to bed?” I looked in the mirror and said “ yup bitch he just did that, wit his young ass.”

When I got out of the shower he had fallen asleep in his living room. I woke him up to come lay with me. The first thing he said when he opened his eyes was, “I rolled you an after shower blunt.” I fuck with that tough, as y’all know weed is the way to my heart. Once in bed, we both passed out on air simultaneously and instantaneously.

Sometimes I forget how much I like to just cuddle. The way we fell asleep is definitely not how we woke up. I woke up to soft caresses and blanket peel backs. I could feel his eyes on me as I stayed with my eyes closed tryin’

5 Ways to EASE THEM INTO SUBMISSION

Ask their sexual boundaries to show respect Give commands that leave them with choices Reward your sub with spankings & gifts Make discipline sexy if they don't follow commands after all it is called play time Make sure they also receives lots of pleasure during submission play

to wake slowly or playing sleep- it’s whatever you wanna call it. Shit, I wanted to see what he was gonna do. I like being woken up just as he was doing, those soft touches turned into slaps on my ass that commanded me to wake up and give him some attention. Let’s just say once again I did as I was told. It was a great start to my morning after a flawless night.

At this point, you may be wondering why I say he was some one-hitter-quitter. Well because he was vain af. A few days later on the phone, he’s telling me every lady he spends time with gets sprung on him. He should have never said that to me, cause NOT me- never me- I’m already stuck on glue & I damn sure ain’t bout to be stuck on you. I don’t want this strain thinking they have any leeway with me. I can’t give him any more intimate time because I’ll be damned if I let him think for one second that I’m sprung on anything he offers; He just got lucky because I guess I’m on the rebound or something, I don’t even know myself. So yea that’s gonna have to be a one-hitter. He is going into the little black book.

CELEBRATING FOUR YEARS WITH THE HAPPY MUNKEY

First, Happy Fourth to Vlad, Ramon, and David, and thanks for all their hard work and efforts since the Munkey opened its doors to the NYC Cannabis community.

To steal from political candidates who’ve famously asked “Are you better off than you were four years ago,” when it comes to the Munkey and their role in leading the way by advocating for legalization and social equity while providing a unique lifestyle experience to safely consume in, the answer is a resounding YES!

People say you always remember your first and in the case of my first visit to the Munkey, very true; having attended a Cannabis community event downtown, I was told there was a secret after-party in midtown. I said let me check this out and drove to this street in the middle of the Garment District...and then fully understood why the secrecy was so important. As many Munkey

Biz readers can relate, the experience begins via an old, smelly freight elevator that in no way prepares you for what happens when you reach the 6th floor as that’s when the magic happens.

Upon entering the Munkey, I was greeted personally by Vlad (who of course, captured all my contact info) who then escorted me around and my mouth was hanging open; I could really smoke weed and hang out and be with people who shared my passion for consuming great Cannabis together. After all, pandemic aside, I always felt that weed was the great leveler and equalizer, sharing joints, dabs, etc., united similarly minded people in a way that created friendships and relationships. And here at the Munkey, that was truly the case.

And, on any given night, we could be smoking with a famous actor, rapper, weed legend, athlete...doing Yoga with Salam and

PAGE 28

Steph...dancing to the tunes of a famous DJ...you just never knew what was waiting for you behind those doors, which made it a MUST for anyone who was anyone in the weed world.

Then, March 2020 and COVID infected NYC in massive numbers and sadly, forced the Munkey to close its doors in support and concern for their many patrons once it became apparent sharing joints in an enclosed space would not be safe for their CannaFam. But being the fighters they are, Vlad, Ramon and David pivoted and transformed the Munkey into a lifestyle, events, and media company with this magazine, its podcast, videos, and other things showcasing the Cannabis lifestyle.

As the panic started to wane and people got healthy, an amazing thing happenedex-Governor Cuomo legalized weed as of April 1, with the law saying that consumers

could smoke Cannabis anywhere that they could smoke tobacco. To celebrate what they had worked so hard for, The Munkey decided to break another ceiling and hosted the first legal pot party in NYC on April 20 at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse directly across the street from the NY Stock Exchange, providing an irresistible setting to show the future of Cannabis to the media who came out in droves. Suddenly, the mainstream world came to learn what we’ve known all along, that today’s Cannabis consumers across all sections of society and positioned Vlad, Ramon, David, and the Munkey as visionaries in the legal Cannabis world.

As we’re still coming down from the high of the two amazing Happy Munkey After Hours events at the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit, let’s all raise a joint or bong or dab to this team and wish them a Happy Fourth, and here’s to many more. Till next time.

Happy Birthday Happy Munkey

Happy fourth solar return to the heart of New York Cannabis, Happy Munkey! Looking back at four years of full force trailblazing in the Cannabis industry, we would love to highlight a few of the many contributions these amazing advocates, influencers, innovators, and community leaders have made in this ever growing New York City Cannabis culture and community.

1. Always a warm welcome!

The Happy Munkey Tribe is well known for its warm welcome and enthusiastic introductions. When we first met the team in 2018 we were greeted with so much positive and loving energy; We walked out of the elevator and were met by Ramon and Vlad with open arms and a big "hello and welcome to Happy Munkey!" We immediately felt like family. (Little did we know that it was a much bigger family than we thought!)

2. The Happy Munkey seshs became our moment of Cannabis Freedom

The highlight of our long workdays, a safe space for Cannabis consumption, and an everyday ritual for many of us Cannapreneurs, we networked with people with the same aspirations and passions. We spent countless hours smoking and hanging out with people from all walks of life, brought together by the same dream, Cannabis Freedom!

3. Happy Munkey created a diverse culture and community around the Cannabis plant like no other.

Happy Munkey normalized social cannabis consumption between industry professionals, patients, cannabis users, and nonusers throughout New York City and the United States. Despite the many obstacles faced by Cannabis brands today, Happy Munkey spread like wildfire and became recognized nationwide as “The Spot '' to go to in NYC. Non-cannabis users, politicians, investors, athletes, and artists were all drawn to the unmatched high vibes of the Munkey Family

4. Cannabis Advocacy The Happy Munkey actively advocated for NY Cannabis Legalization and continues to support the Cannabis equity movement with an emphasis on elevating our BIPOC communities!

5. Representing NYC Cannabis with High-End After Parties

The Happy Munkey has brought the NYC Cannabis culture and energy to conferences throughout the country by hosting amazing networking afterparties. This year the Munkey will be at Vegas MJbizcon in October hosting a Cannabis networking experience with Farechild, MCA accounting solutions, and SannaOhana.

6. The Happy Munkey held space for their community to become educated on Cannabis use and its health benefits. The Happy Munkey and SannaOhana family both recognized a need to bring mindfulness to the homes of our urban communities - starting with our own families. Through Cannabis education, Cannabis yoga, meditation, and alternative self-healing modalities such

PAGE 32

as Cannabis use, we began to empower our people to take their wellbeing into their own hands. We began our monthly Happy MunkeySanna Cannabis Yoga events with a combination of complete cannabis freedom and wellness that our community had never seen before!

7. Creative content and culture. The Happy Munkey has created incredibly fun, artistic, educational and documentary content including highlighting New York Cannabis Culture with a weekly podcast, Munkey Biz magazine monthly newsletter, and Munkey TV.

8. Cannabis and Art The Happy Munkey have always encouraged and cultivated the enjoyment of art paired with cannabis consumption. They also work with and support many local artists. Last month

they reached a new high (pun intended) with not one but two legendary Happy Munkey After Hours at the Immersive Van Gogh. The first legal NYC event to ever have Cannabis consumed in the open and appreciated for one of its many benefits and uses, a conduit for creativity, expression, and appreciation of art.

9. Cannabis Accessories and Apparel The Happy Munkey have created an online market with branded cannabis accessories and apparel such as hemp clothing and other limited edition merchandise in collaboration with some of the most recognized local artists.

Light one to many more years of Happy Munkey community and Cannabis Culture!

Munkey Munchies

99th Floor

Welcome back Happy Munkey Fam to the September installment of Munkey Munchies! This month I am overjoyed to share with you one of New York’s most illustrious cannabis dining experiences, The 99th Floor. Curated by none other than star chef and fellow Dominican Miguel Trinidad and his partner Doug Cohen, the 99th Floor has been elevating cannabis consumption experiences for foodies and canna-enthusiasts alike.

On a drizzly night, Danielle and I got dressed up and headed into Williamsburg for what we knew was about to be next-level night. We arrived a little late to the sent address and it was an entire restaurant closed off for the 99th Floor Dinner Party. On the walk-in, after having checked in and our Vax cards checked, we were seamlessly handed cocktails and ushered to the main dining space. On the tables were name cards with a wax seal, which 1) removed the awkwardness of picking where to sit, and 2) was some high-class shit for a dinner party (cannabis-infused or not!).

Our timing ended up being perfect, within 3 minutes of us getting situated at our table Chef Migs came out of the kitchen and gave his opening remarks to formally kick off the experience. In his speech he highlighted that the entire dinner was curated around a specific “Strain of the Night”, which lucky for us was one of my favorites, Wedding Cake. Taking the intention one step further Chef Migs explained that the dinner was going to be an edible cannabis journey guided by Wedding Cake’s unique terpene profile. Additionally, the entire 99th Floor experience was conceived as a rebuttal to the all too common occurrence of edible experiences that were way too intense for the consumer. So instead of a THC macro-dosed dinner, The 99th Floor masterfully puts together 5 courses totaling only 25mg for the entire meal. While I’m not normally used to eating weed and it not being a knockout, I was hype to get eating!

PAGE 34
Photos by Stefen Ross

The 1st course was an insanely tasty and infused amuse bouche: Potato Coin stuffed with bacalao mantecato & a pea emulsion… yes you read that right, Chef Migs is really out here doing it big fancy with these cannabis dinners. I am not going to lie for the 2nd course I spaced on writing down exactly what chef Migs described the dish as (because I was high). But in short, it was a refreshing summer salad with a dressing so delectable I saw multiple people tipping their bowls over to drink the last drops of it. The 3rd course was Pulpo a la plancha with a white bean puree, lardoons, salsa verde, and infused chili oil. Each bite paired the char of the octopus and the accompanying sauces to perfection.

Before the next course was served we snuck out for a little smoke break to kick start the THC metabolizing in our systems. As we skipped back to our table, the servers had just placed the 4th course, duck breast topped with honey (infused with Wedding Cake and OG Kush) on a bed of Polenta made with cannabis butter. Elevated from the meal and our quick smoke break, the duck and polenta blend melted so effortlessly my jaw clenched from

the mouth-watering flavor! The last course of the dinner was a dessert that flawlessly consisted of caramelized milk chocolate, chocolate sable, candied cocoa nibs, espresso, & whipped cream all curated by a guest pastry chef Torkster Vee. The icing on the cake was a to-go case of 100mg THC-infused hard candies to keep the cannabis party going or to kick start it another day!

All in all the dinner was nothing short of cannabis perfection. The entire night, conversations were flowing and happy people were enjoying their time out! No question some Dominican hospitality sneaks into the vibe and energy of the space, coupled with the attentive wait staff, the house was on point all dinner. Q&A w/LUNA

Q: What kind of musical genre do you see yourself fitting in and why?

A: I enjoy good music in general and appreciate combining multiple genres. Most of my music expands into hip hop and pop and I also enjoy delving into

EDM and indie. The possibilities are endless!

Q: Name 3 music artists alive or dead that you'd want to smoke with?

A: Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Rihanna.

PAGE 38

Q: Tell us a little bit about where you are from?

A:I was born in Madison, WI. It's the Capital of Wisconsin and has a big college campus so has lots of young people and is known for partying hard and being very liberal. I never had family in Wisconsin as most of my family is from Chicago so I spent lots of time there growing up and I always felt the bigger the city, the better.

Q: When was the first time you got high? How old were you, what type of weed was it, how was that experience, etc?

A: I was 15 years old and it was some Reggie a kid in the neighborhood gave me. I really had been wanting to try it and I handcrafted a water bottle bong. I snuck onto the roof at my parent's house and started tweaking as I was positive the neighbor across from my backyard was glaring a spotlight directly at me. I reacted like a deer in headlights. Later I realized it was a car's headlights.

Q: Does cannabis help your creative process?

A: Yes! It helps me connect deeper with the music. I make my best music when it flows out of me. I like to think less and feel more.

Q: Do you find it difficult to be open about your cannabis use in the music industry?

A: Nope! I have been mentioning weed in my music for as long as I have been making it! I'm thankful to be able to combine my two loves, music and cannabis, together so often.

Q: What's your favorite way to consume cannabis?

A: I love a good joint, such as my Big Boys Rolling Papers, for the convenience of it. I also love a good ice bong! The way the cool smoke feels in my throat is refreshing.

Q: What's new with Luna?

A:I recently moved to New York! I've always wanted to transition here. I love fast city life and it has been a big inspiration for my music career.

Q: Lastly, Any inspiring words for aspiring artists?

A: Take steps towards your goals every day! Some days you will make larger strides than others but as long as you continue in the direction of your vision, you will inevitably get to where you want to be.

AutoFLower Cup 2021

More events that work to shape a responsible cannabis industry with act-local-think-global bones, please!

As a cannabis enthusiast and storyteller from Texas, I often have to travel far outside of my lone star landmass to find the best bud, most accomplished cultivators and take part in events that bring together the realest ones of the cannabis community. So in August, my husband and I attended The Autoflower Cup on the Hood Canal in Lilliwaup, Washington to learn about Autoflowers from the best, find adventure, and yes, to make new friends.

Although it might not look bad on a map, Lilliwaup is a bit remote and kind of a pain to get to; I knew we’d love it. Typically the more complex the travel plan the more dedicated and passionate the attendee, and this was definitely the rule at The AutoFlower Cup. We were surrounded by cannabis and mycology luminaries from the moment we checked in at Mike’s Beach Resort. Mike’s is a 1940’s scuba camp and it was every bit as awesome as that sounds - effortlessly vintage and seemingly grown into the surrounding prehistoric nature on the Hood canal.

The Glamping village we stayed in, with the exception of a few makeshift outhouse doors, was as-advertised - we had real furniture and outdoor living. Our tent, one of twelve, was a large hotel room outdoors, and each tent around us housed a couple or group spearheading real change & progress in the industry today. Our campsite was filled with “campers” interested in sharing ideas and new methods for progress. Rather than getting drunk and hoping our collected business cards don’t lost in the morning after airport shuffle, we shared smoke, s’mores, mushrooms, oysters, pancakes &

PAGE 40

waffles, seeds, more smoke, wine, DABS, chants, dances, victories, discoveries, still more smoke, and space for each other to be exactly who we were, in that moment.

Like any good party, the event wasn’t without its mishaps including tiny uninvited fires, power outages, paramedics, and a few more harmless surprises. Sadly, I missed the mushroom foray because I slept in, but I only have late-night conversations and dabs under the stars to blame.

An open-air vendor row was set up along the bank where vendors all seemed to be vibing and doing business effortlessly with “day campers” who came in for daily events. Each person we met felt authentically committed to responsible progress in the industry

and had a real, deep love for the Autoflower cultivators. Oh that’s right, almost forgot; there were contests and people were victorious! The competition was secondary to the camaraderie.

The Autoflower Cup was much more than an experience to learn, but an experience to learn as a community, become fully immersed in the ancient natural surroundings, and feel at one with our tribe. To gawk together at the natural and sacred beauty surrounding us, and take in the deep wisdom of those humans you suspect might actually be cosmic travelers from another dimension, like our event creators Chef Sebastian Carosi and his fearless partner Carla Asquith. Together they dreamt about bringing the cannabis community at-large out of the dark and depressing conference centers and face-to-face with the abundance, beauty, and responsibility of the natural world,

Yes...Cannabis Businesses Pay Excise Taxes Too! They say

you can’t escape death and taxes. As a cannabisrelated business owner, you may have an even harder time escaping use and excise taxes.

Excise tax gets added on product sales that range from motor fuel and airline tickets to tobacco and alcohol. Cannabis, an industry that often includes businesses that don’t always keep accounts in order, is also subject to these taxes, which are in addition to general sales tax.

Considered a “secret weapon” by the states against the industry, these taxes are a method for reducing use and demand. But as the interest and consumption of cannabis only continues to grow throughout the country, it’s really just a way for states to bring in more revenues from the industry.

How States Determine Excise Taxes

As part of the legalization legislation, each state and district has already determined the method and percentage of excise taxes they’ll collect. There are three different ways to determine how much is owed:

Percentage of Cost

Like the retail sales tax, excise taxes that are levied by the percentage of price are presumed to be passed on to the consumer. The business owner is then responsible for remitting the tax they collect from the consumer to the state. Some states let local municipalities collect an additional excise tax.

By Weight

Tobacco is subject to an excise tax that’s determined by weight. For some states like California, excise taxes for cannabis are set based on wholesale weight. Excise taxes based on weight can differ based on whether you’re selling flower, trim, or clones.

Potency-Based

Similar to the method for alcohol-based excise taxes, one state taxes cannabis based on the percentage of THC in the product. Illinois taxes products with 35% or less THC at 10% of the product price. Products that contain more than 35% are taxed at 25% of the purchase price. Edibles are taxed at 20% of the purchase price.

How Much Do You Owe in Excise Tax?

How much your business owes in excise tax depends on the state where you do business. State excise taxes can range from no taxing system in place, such as in Vermont, to 37% on retail sales in Washington.

It’s important that you keep all your invoices, receipts, and logs on all your products so you can account for what’s due on both state and local excise taxes on your business. Many cannabis-related businesses aren’t aware of the accounting requirements, and they’re forced to play catchup at the end of the year, or even worse, after the state is already auditing them..

To fully understand your tax responsibilities, work with a certified accountant who understands the specific requirements of the cannabis industry Like Happy Munkey's accountant, My Cannabis Accountant!

Cultivar of the Month

High Happy Munkey Fam and welcome back to “cultivar of the month”! This month’s pick caught me by complete surprise. As a New Yorker, I’m used to smoking cannabis not cultivated, processed, or even packaged in my home state. Whether my cannabis comes from cannabis hotspots like Oregon and California or Maine and Michigan, New Yorkers are known for being the biggest cannabis, not for growing. As a result of being a consumer, I’ve become intrigued with how and where my cannabis is cultivated. That's why when I got my hands on a ½ oz of Jack Frost organically cultivated indoors in Hawaii using traditional Korean farming techniques, I was in heaven!

Jack Frost is a classic hard-hitting cultivar made by crossing White Widow with Northern Lights #5. While I know there is a ton of “ZAZA” out there, sometimes a classic just hits you brand new! I ground up the bright green and orange flower and the pungent sweet smell of lemons and wooded wilderness filled the room. I rolled up a fat joint in a Blazy Susan paper and the ash burned extremely clean, the joint burned extremely

slowly, and resin from the flower created an amber ring around the lit joint ember. Each inhale had a clean sweet candy taste, followed up by a smooth lemon pepper exhale. The most important part was that the high was quick and onset throughout my body, making me feel simultaneously more relaxed and focused. After smoking the entire joint I was definitely smacked but with clarity and focus to continue my day that set it apart from a lot of the flowers I have smoked in the past few weeks!

Not sure if it was the cultivation technique, the cultivar itself, or the fact it came from fucking Hawaii! But this Jack Frost proudly earned its spot as "Cultivar Of The Month!"

'Highpothetically, New York legalizes cannabis'

New York State is the modern birthplace of sensible and equitable cannabis legislation thanks to countless advocates and organizations, including those who were only around briefly. While some advocates have been working for decades, my relationship with cannabis began recreationally in 2008 and matured over the years. From being arrested for public consumption to lobbying alongside New York’s most ardent advocates, one of my favorite experiences occurred during the fall of 2019. I compiled local stories from my friends and colleagues and made a film about a cannabis deliverer from the Lower East Side.

In 2019, Doug Greene was leading local advocacy alongside Crystal People Stokes and Liz Krueger. His breadth of knowledge about all things cannabis-inspired those who met him to support equitable cannabis policy. When Doug

unexpectedly passed away in June and cannabis wasn’t included in the budget, I felt a wash of frustration. While reflecting over the years of sharing cannabis information among my community and collaborating on producing social events to amplify equity messaging, I realized that I needed a different approach. I was inspired to play a fictionalized version of myself, a mid-20s filmmaker and cannabis advocate who bakes infused banana bread with his grandmother to sell on the streets of New York. The film, titled “Highpothetically,” was shot on an iPhone X over 2 weeks and made entirely through donated efforts by the cast and crew. I am overjoyed with their support!

Social justice advocacy can be frustrating because progress is slow. It takes a band of persistent voices to elevate the social conscience. Watching the film reminds me of that frustration

PAGE 48

because it reflects my pensive response to Doug’s passing. It’s a perfect representation of the dejection that many advocates were feeling.

Although society is progressing, there are still many misconceptions about cannabis, especially with regard to how to talk about it and integrate it into our culture. Medical, recreational, adultuse, licensing, permitting, and other regulatory expressions are controls on access to the plant for its “uses.” I’ve gathered that cannabis has 2 purposes; material and therapeutic. All of the rules and regulations that determine who can use which part of the plant for whatever reason is political and subject to review. We have to remind ourselves that we are doing

our best to figure it out, and as long as we’re open and communicative with each other, we can create positive change together.

Now that cannabis legislation has been passed in New York, I’m optimistic about what will become of the industry. My main concern is affordable access to quality cannabis. As the economics become clearer to federal regulators, I hope that people of color are able to own a sizable portion of the industry. I want to continue contributing to this “green rush” and as it evolves, I would love to use my experiences working with cannabis organizations and as a filmmaker to support advocacy through educational public service announcements for New York State, branded commercials, and films.

JEFF SPICOLI'S MOM'S BANANA BREAD

Everyone my age remembers the perpetual stoner and super slacker Jeff Spicoli from the iconic movie Fast Times of Ridgemont High straight out of the early eighties. Spicoli lived for skipping school and surfing big SoCal waves. He was famous for always being extremely high and his ruckus bouts with the no nonsense teacher Mr. Hand; a staunch anti-marijuana advocate and total bummer. Far less well known was the love Spicoli had for his mom and his mom's old school banana bread and bagels of course! Made just as Mrs. Spicoli made it back in the day this American classic is perfectly sweet, super moist, and full of complex banana flavor. As well as a good dose of cannabis! For me it is the best way to use over-ripe bananas.

Bananas did not arrive in the United States until the 1870's and it took until the 1930's before banana bread recipes became popular throughout the colonies and plantations. A healthy source of potassium, iron, magnesium, niacin, riboflavin, B6, vitamin C, fiber and energy, the banana is a nutritional powerhouse, minus the fats and cholesterol. All these vitamins and minerals help the banana contribute to a healthy body and mind. Bananas have also been found to contain Limonene and Eugenol; two powerful antioxidant rich terpenes found in other plants including cannabis. With legalization rapidly sweeping the United States the wall of stigma surrounding cannabis is slowly fading away. More and more people can finally use those over-ripe bananas to make this dank cannabis banana bread.

(PS- February 23rd is national banana bread day, just saying...)

There may be some messages from the universe or a form of communication from someone you resent. This could also be yourself. Make amends with things from your past, no matter how painful it has been. Forgiveness is the key to liberating your emotional happiness.

Growth brings a feeling of not feeling restricted. Think of a hermit crab outgrowing its shell. It’s ok to be set in your ways, but changes allow you to explore and expand more. Greater opportunities will be attracted to this new energy. Be the confident person you are and think of how worthy and deserving you are.

Setting boundaries with those loved ones will help you achieve your goals quicker. It takes practice but saying “No” is a sign of respect to oneself. Try it a few times. Notice not only the satisfaction of not feeling guilt but how the universe shall reward you for standing up for yourself.

Getting past your insecurities will take you further within your love life. Arrogance can surface if you constantly fear being rejected. Take a vacation or a one-night getaway by yourself (or with your partner) and enjoy it. Paradise is not always a location.

Beware of co-dependency factors, even if you’re single. Being selective in a relationship is ideal, as long as you are not seeking perfection. Settling for uncompromisable situations, out of the fear of commitment with someone who has flaws, is also cheating yourself out of a long and

No matter what is going on in this world, don’t fall victim to being self-absorbed. Your energy is needed to stay interested in your surroundings. Tend to yourself first, but make sure to always be someone’s peace.

It has been a long haul. Even if there is still more to get done, you can attest to how this new, self-loving you, is being rewarded. Continue to enjoy this journey.

ARIES: Jack Herer

Being emotionally detached or unavailable will keep you from receiving the love you desire from others. Don’t allow people to wrongly guess how you’re truly feeling. Being upfront will allow them, and yourself, to better understand and respect you.

TAURUS: Mendo

Have you been feeling a bit self-conscious? Don’t get caught up in self-shaming. Love where you are and how your foundation was built. If you need to do some restorations, go for it! Just please remind yourself though, whoever your soulmate is, whether you are single or not, that person will love you through and will uplift you when you are feeling unattractive or uninspired.

GEMINI: Sundae Driver

It’s never easy being a duality sign; having to work through triggers and overreacting. Bring more balance into your love life by recognizing the second that something/one activates the feeling of wanting to snap. Find something to distract yourself with. Heck, wash a clean dish! Anything to help you reflect and come to a better resolution. Everything

CANCER: Jet Fuel

Being quick-tempered will bring you to a lonely place if it is not worked through and healed. Your relationships with people should be based on their love and support for you, not on how much you do for them. That’s for them to learn and heal from as well. Be responsible for what you do have control of always, yourSELF!

LEO: Durban Poison

It’s time for you to indulge yourself with some “Selfappreciation time”. Get rid of any negative thoughts you may have about who you are. Especially if these lies have been fed to you by others. It’s a perfect time to heal. .

Kicks FOR da kulture

Welcome back Happy Munkey fam to the September edition of Kickz for the Kulture. As you know this month, we are celebrating Happymunkey’s 4th anniversary. In commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the brand, I have put attention to the highly coveted Air Jordan 4s and the huge impact they have made in the sneaker culture. The Air Jordan 4 is the fourth signature sneaker to be released in 1989 for Michael Jordan and Nike Jordan brand. It was Tinker Hatfield’s second shoe designed for Nike, so it’s no surprise you see so many similarities with the Air Jordan 3’s which was released first. Similarities like the visible Nike

air max cushion, which is no surprise because Tinker Hatfield is the visible air max master. Tinker made the Air Jordan 4s distinct by introducing a netting on the upper part of the shoe and adding plastic lace eyelids for weight reduction making it a unique shoe design. The air Jordan 4s gained hyped and tagged “The Shot” after the classic buzzer-beater jump-shot Michael Jordan made on the Cleveland Cavaliers to win a playoff series. Ever since 1989, the air Jordan 4 show has been re-released several times, and every time they are more loved and valued than before. Below I will highlight four of my personal favorite air Jordan 4 colorways of all time.

In conclusion, the Air Jordan 4 is indeed an important sneaker in the evolution of sneakers and shall continue to be a heavy hitter and a sneaker to always look out for. We the good folks at Happymunkey would also love our brand to be just as important in the canna community. Thank you all for continuous support because without ya we wouldn’t be saying happy 4th anniversary!!!!

Until the next one always Choose Happy…

PAGE 58

Air Jordan 4 | Black/cement

The must-have colorway because it goes with everything. The signature colorway of the air Jordan 4s. I don’t know anyone who dislikes these. You can catch Spike Lee wearing In the classic film “do the right thing.”

Air Jordan 4 | Offwhite/sail

In 2020 the midst of a pandemic, Virgil Abloh collaborated with Jordan on one of the most beautiful air Jordan 4s ever created. A smooth-off white mostly sail upper and a sail-colored clear sole make these an art piece in my eyes.

Air Jordan 4 | Retro Kaws

Let me take you back to 2017 when Kaws and Jordan brand made the ultimate collaboration and created the most expensive air Jordan 4 in the resell market. The all-grey suede shoe is a beauty but what makes them so valuable was how difficult it was to obtain since they were only released in a special release event inside the Brooklyn Museum.

Air Jordan 4 | Travis Scott Cactus Jack

2018 was a huge year for recording artist Travis Scott but he really put on for the culture when he collaborated with Jordan on an Air Jordan 4 shoe. This Air Jordan 4 s was special because of the baby blue suede and red details that commemorated the Houston Oilers. One of the highest valued shoes on the resell market and an instant classic colorway.
