AIA’s 17th Airline Marketing Workshop AIA第17届航空营销研讨会 “Fly away” “翱翔” “The way to excellence” “通向卓越” “Making the … novel way” “以创新的方式……” Athens International Airport awards airlines for their development in
The 17th Airline Marketing Workshop, organised annually by the Athens International Airport, keeps fostering the spirit οf innovation and novelty this year, serving as an ideal platform for a substantial dialogue between the airport and its key partners. More than 200 guests had the opportunity to follow a rich agenda of topics under the theme title, “Making the … novel way”, that was based on an actual novel, “Lost and Found: An Aθenian Story”, written especially for the Athens International Airport in the framework of “Aviation Marketing delivered in a … novel way” campaign. This year’s venue, the “Lighthouse” of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, made the Workshop a very special experience for all participants, the AIA being the first company hosting an event at this brilliant “new destination” in Athens. Amidst an array of intriguing themes was an Athens market overview for 2016 that covered the latest technological developments, the revamp of airport infrastructure and its commitment to environmental protection, Ms. Effie Panagiotopoulou’s (Ryanair Media and Advertising Manager / Brand Communications) presentation of the airline’s business model and innovations, as well as Mr. Lee Lik Hsin’s, CEO of Scoot, the newcomer in the Athens market, speak about the new route that will connect Athens with Singapore, as of June. On a more Greek note, Mr. Iossif Parsalis, General Manager of Marketing Greece, asserted himself on the prospect of Athens as a city break destination with his speech “Lost and Found: An Aθenian Story”. Athens International Airport CEO, Yiannis Paraschis, concluded the workshop revealing AIA’s positive track record for 2016 and presented its annual awards to the airlines that achieved the fastest development and the highest increases in passenger volumes in their scheduled services during 2016.

They met when the ship of young Athenian Dimofontas came back from Troy. They married, but the young Athenian longed for his homeland, so the love struck princess let him go back to Athens, and if he loved her too, then he would return to her. The love struck Phyllis died of sorrow waiting for her loved one. The gods, however, being aware of her unrest, turned her into a tree so she would be able to wait for more years; the tree, a symbol of hope and spring, is the Almond tree. According to the myth, when Dimofontas returned years later, he found his wife, a dried up tree, in the middle of the frozen landscape. In desperation, he hugged the trunk, and then the almond tree blossomed with its flowers in the middle of winter, defeating death. Since ancient times, spring was a season of regeneration, vitality and renewal. In a country like Greece, with its wonderful light, the days becoming longer, its prevailing colours and fragrances transforming the whole Greek landscape, even the archaeological sites, the challenge for a magical journey becomes imperative. A trip to Greece in the springtime has a special charm, since it stimulates all natural senses to the fullest. Greece in spring, with its colours, aromas, history, culture, gastronomy and mythology, awaits you to live your own myth and share the unique experience with your friends. And remember, myths and fairy tales are more so important, not only because of the great heroes, fairies, hidden treasures and dragons, but mainly because through them we learn that we can defeat dragons and discover hidden treasures, if only we seek them with integrity and soul power, and of course always in the end, good prevails over evil and we all live happily! This spring, live your own myth in Greece, the country that gave birth to the myth. Enjoy the ELEGANT TRAVEL GREECE Spring issue, which is dedicated to spring.

Plato, Aristotle and the classical antiquity ideals regarding the body, time and institutions continue to influence contemporary creators. In the main building of the Benaki Museum in Kolonaki, a dialogue is instigated between the ancient Greek culture and the artists stars, among them Jeff Koons, Urs Fischer and Charles Ray, via a novel intermingling of their own video art and the ancient artifacts. The exhibition Liquid Antiquity is a collaboration of the DESTE Foundation with Princeton University and aims to examine the ways in which a strong iconography was formulated that lasted 2,500 years in Western culture. How will the daily life be in the cities of the future? What kind of changes will the increasingly more intelligent devices, networked objects and connected environments bring? With these questions in mind, the Diplareios School building in the centre of Athens welcomes architects, designers and artists. They in turn, present their own narratives in the exhibition Tomorrows at the Stegi Cultural Centre. Infrastructures, tools, wearable technologies and everyday objects will be the occasion for unexpected or intentionally exaggerated narratives, where the future is utilized as
a tool for understanding the present itself. (16/5 to 15/7). DANCE, DIMITRIS PAPAIOANNOY
With the complexity of his personal perspective, Dimitris Papaioannou presents his new creative–choreographic work, produced by the Stegi Cultural Centre of Onassis. The Greek artist gained international acclaim by assuming the creative direction of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games opening ceremony, as well as “exporting” his aesthetic approach in 2015 at the opening ceremony of the first European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan. As a choreographer of intense emotional projects, he initially addressed a small public, but soon developed into a creative artist who exploits technological means to produce large-scale projects. As he wants his new projects to be shrouded in mystery until the moment of revelation, Dimitris Papaioannou works in silence in order to surprise his audience. 24th of May to the 11th June Syngrou Ave. 107, Tickets: 210 905800, info@sgt.gr TAE KWON DO ARENA

The Museum of Cycladic Art hosts the anniversary event of the 10th DESTE Prize of the DESTE Foundation, embracing an award established in 1999 that showcases emerging Greek and Cypriot artists living in Greece and abroad. The Foundation’s aim is to solidly support Greek artistic production and to promote it in the international markets. That is the reason why the selective process of awarding an artist every two years is undertaken by an international jury. With the occasion of the anniversary, the nine awarded artists who have stood out in the period 1999-2015, present a series of their latest works specifically crafted for the institution. A different convergence of art and gastronomy is in store at the Twenty One Restaurant at the hotel of the same name in Kifissia. The cultural creative platform Dio Horia presents the #21project, where contemporary Greek and international artists install 21 artworks on the restaurant walls that aim to make a statement on the issue of cultural appropriation in the 21st century. Among them is the artist and photographer Juergen Teller, who presents the continuation of a personal project based on a 1984 photograph by Robert Mapplethorpe that depicts five frogs on a plate. Teller created a brand new series of works with frogs and plates titled Frogs and Plate, some of which “croak” and... bounce on the Athenian wall. Until the 31/5 Kolokotroni 21, Kifissia

«déshabillé»
Maria Loizidou is considered one of the most important and dialectically inspired artists of her generation in both Greece and France. Paratoxic Paradoxes 悖论
“Is man’s relationship to the environment the most controversial, complex and unfinished project of humanity?” The exhibition Paratoxic Paradoxes at the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street proposes an original “capsule” with works by eleven contemporary artists from different parts of the world, such as Ecuador, Greece, the United States, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic and the Philippines, who worked for the past two years, assigned by the nonprofit artistic platform Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative, curated by Nadia Argyropoulou. Through a contemporary perspective of political ecology shaped today as a convergence point of the arts with politics and socio-economic issues, the exhibition stresses how important it is to rethink about our relationship with the material, life
forms and the environment, by removing any kind of litter from our life and nature (until the 21/5). * Piraios 138, tel.: 210 345 3111, Metro: Kerameikos “人与环境的关系是人类最具争议性、最复杂的未完成课题 吗?”

A large part of his career included the fashion world, prêt-aporter and the weaving of raw materials. Yannis Tseklenis, the prestigious Greek fashion designer of international acclaim in the ‘60s and ‘70s, continued his creative path in design during the following decades, changing his means of expression. A new look on his early design work is attempted by the i-D Concept stores, with an exhibition of original drawings from the designer in the ‘70s and a presentation of collections that inspired three contemporary Greek designers. Raised in Kythera, the British artist Zoë Paul disrupts the prevailing conceptions of symbolism, the body, archaeological and contemporary findings, with a project that is essentially a lineage of household objects. Indicative of her work is the way she reuses the grills of old electric refrigerators as the basis for colourful weavings-sculptures, a technique also applied to other of her works, such as the tiny clay beads with which she creates designs on her characteristic partitions that resemble curtains on village house doors (until 30/5). The 22nd Art Athina, the event of the Hellenic Art Galleries Association, this year presents the whole spectrum of contemporary art in 12 themes, such as performance, video, design, historical works from the collections of the participating galleries and art publications that are undertaken by notable curators. The exhibition also honours the work of the recently deceased Jannis Kounellis, an international persona of the Arte Povera, who with his poetic and direct creativity raised questions concerning space, violence, memory, relationships within our society and the historical outline that defines it. “I want poetry to return by all means, through exercise, observation, loneliness, speech, image, uprising”, was his motto. “In 1971, I visited Chile after an invitation by Allende’s government as Chairman of the Patriotic Anti-Dictatorial Front. At a concert in the city of Valparaiso, a group of young composers were presenting their works on the poetry of Pablo Neruda. I promised to give Chile my own musical version... We had to get to the winter of 1980 to ‘81, for me to complete the composition and the REQUIEM to PABLO NERUDA. With the few verses I wrote to his memory, I think I present my entire philosophy -and bitterness- for the degradation and subjugation of contemporary intellectual values to the almighty powers”. Mikis Theodorakis. The Athens State Orchestra will present Canto General, oratorio in 13 parts, written for two soloists, mixed choir and a fifteen-member orchestra of Mikis Theodorakis on the 7th of July at the Athens Megaron Concert Hall Gardens, performed by Maria Farantouri and Petros Pandis and conducted by Loukas Karytinos. For almost four centuries, from 1458 to 1833, Athens was a small city of the Ottoman Empire with tiled rooftops, stone houses, orthodox churches, mosques and of course, Ottoman baths. The baths or hammam (steam bath in Turkish) were considered formal and essential buildings of the Islamic world. A historical continuity of the Roman thermae and Byzantine baths, the hammam were interwoven with the culture of bathing and necessary since according to the Koran, cleanliness and hair washing was thought to purify the sins of the soul. In the locker rooms with green trellises, the half-lit arched spaces with fountains and marble countertops, the corridors and narrow staircases, the visitor today drifts into a journey through time, memories and imagination, senses and illusions, the body and the soul. It is a trip to another city, which is modestly “hidden” within modern-day Athens. Back to the present, one of the “hottest” spots in Athens, just a short distance from the Bath House of the Winds, is the Hammam Baths - a modern space that respectfully carries on the tradition of traditional baths, with high quality standards and a minimal aesthetic an absolutely authentic experience for travellers today. At a time when violent migrations, fermentations and intermixing incessantly reshape the biodiversity, the concept of a garden being a confined environment is reassessed and approaches Michel Foucault’s definition of the garden: “the smallest parcel of the world” and “the totality of the world”. With this as a starting point, the Pompidou exhibition presents mostly contemporary works, that depict an “experimental” garden, dark, chaotic and unpredictable, set up like an organic scenery in which the visitor wanders around like an ecstatic gardener.

Set against the agonizing period of the Second World, the years of free jazz and Beat poetry, artists like Pollock, Rohtko and de Kooning defied all accepted conventions in painting, in order to freely express their personal idiom. Thus, Abstract Expressionism was born, a movement with a decisive influence on the development of modern art, whose complexity the Guggenheim Bilbao exhibition will attempt to unfold. More than 130 paintings of colossal dimensions, sculptures and photographs from private and public collections, bring the audience face to face with a “fluid” phenomenon, which stuns with its emotion and thoughtfulness.

Few exhibitions are surrounded by a comparable myth and high expectations as the annual spring gala of the Costume Institute at MoMA, let alone this year where a visionary of international fashion, the grand Rei Kawakubo, is being honoured. The Institute will examine the boundaries defined and exceeded by the designer with her conceptual approach to fashion design, ever since her first show in Paris in 1981 until today. The exhibits will be placed at eye level and without barriers, as to encourage the intimacy between visitors and Rei’s iconic pieces. Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion Cristóbal Balenciaga is regarded as the designer who reinterpreted the 1950’s haute couture, occupying a place among the fashion giants of the 21st century. The exhibition at the V&A, which coincides with the anniversary of the 100 years of operation of the Spanish master’s atelier in San Sebastian, investigates the designer’s technical prowess with material including more than 100 pieces, among them garments, hats as well as sketches, photographs and films. At the same time, it also depicts the unprecedented “legacy” of the influential couturier to a whole generation of designers, from their protégées up to contemporary fashion designers who still work on the same innovative paths paved by Cristobal. Spread across 750 acres of Mayan jungle, half an hour from Yucatán’s capital, Merida, Chablé Resort is considered Latin America’s coolest spot to relax. A hedonistic 5 star spa, built around its own cenote -a natural limestone swimming hole celebrated by Mayans as the entrance into the sacred underworld- initiates the guests to hypnotic rituals that blend traditional Mayan therapies with Eastern healing methods, while at the same time offers a hardcore detox programme for those who seek less spiritual experiences. Chablé also features 38 casitas (pool villas), two expansive villas and a restored 19th century hacienda, which includes a library and a wine cellar with the world’s largest private tequila collection! Adding to a general prevailing sense of intimacy and mystical aura, a traditional Mayan garden lies in the heart of the resort, recreating harvesting techniques not being used in over a century. Yiannis Sergakis believes in the creativity of unswerving thought, which is triggered by the senses, people, silhouettes and forms. His constant passion is gold and diamonds, timeless symbols of power and charm, which he works with exclusively, reformulating their luxury in sophisticated pieces of disarming simplicity. This - almost geometric - simplicity in design constitutes his absolute “Greek” element, in counterpoint to the international standards of his company and an artistic notion that has eclectic influences from the modernism of the late ‘40s. Despite his European elegance, Yiannis Sergakis is a born and bred Athenian who lives near the Acropolis, walks to his boutique on Valaoritou street and and loves the opportunity the city gives him, where in a short while he is in touch with nature “in order to do everything I do not do in my daily life”. He could be living in the ‘30s, just like in the film “The English Patient”, even though he rejects the prevailing belief that past times are always the best. Besides its own “past” -a diamond trader in the family business, jewelry collector and designer for major jewelry houses in Greece and abroad- he was certainly led into a better day: the birth of his own brand in 2014 where, in less than a year, he found himself in tens of major markets - from Paris and New York to Dallas, Las Vegas, Hong Kong and Dubai.

My Greek heritage has a lot to do with me being spontaneous, animated and enjoying life. A little eccentric too! A more international trait would be my curious nature, I like to travel and discover things all the time. As for my jewelry, it has quite a talismanic approach - personal, eclectic and unconventional. It’s all about energies and synergies, about protection and a bohemian bourgeois aesthetic. The type of woman I hold in mind when designing is someone sensual, confident, with a sense of humour and open to new experiences. Throughout my work underlies an optimistic sensation, an air filled with scents of flowers and herbs and the sea breeze. Living in Athens means being close to the sea so you can go for a walk and feel the water whenever you please. People are friendly, welcoming and there is also a sense of belonging ... Aren’t these also the best things about being alive? 25, Herodotou str., Kolonaki

Laughter and stoicism are characteristics she attributes to her Greek DNA, though Katerina Psoma definitely is international, mainly due to the fact that she has extensively lived abroad and she speaks four languages. With a creative mark that shifts from minimal to maximal and vice versa, but always in the context of applied aesthetics, the designer draws inspiration from impeccably beautiful women of past eras, and, when designing - in a state she describes as nostalgic melancholy, she holds in mind places that are set near Greek ancient sites.

Three girls with a common origin and memories of endless summers in the hot Cretan south, sign the Kyrvan shoes, the Greek espadrilles inspired by the tradition of Crete, without being folklore. With a name that refers to the ancient name of Ierapetra (Kyrva), where Myrto and Evi Kritsotaki and Marianna Kontopodi originate from, Kyrvan have become fastsellers among stylish girls who appreciate the finish of a good leather shoe, but also seek designs to match with a free spirited, bohemian summer. With jute soles and leather from traditional textiles with vintage motifs of Cretan costumes or embroidered on suede designs, each one of the Kyrvan espadrilles requires 4 hours of work by hand, making them unique, as well as beautiful.

Figalia Peloponnese Welcoming Apollo
Every winter, the god Apollo would leave Greece and travel to the distant land of the Hyperboreans, only to return in a spectacular way in spring. He would arrive on a bright chariot drawn by swans. He would bring with him the light and the efflorescence. The first welcoming of the god by his faithful would be at Bassae at Figaleia in the mountainous Peloponnese, along the borders of Arcadia, Ilia and Messinia. It is a landscape of wild beauty, surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks. In spring, the colourful flowers crown the sacred region, which seems to celebrate the arrival of the god of light. Founded there on a spectacular rock stands the temple of Apollo Epicurius (assistant). It is perhaps the bestpreserved ancient temple in Greece, the only one found at such a high altitude (1,130m.). Built in the late 5th century B.C., possibly by the Parthenon’s architect Iktinos who used the local material (gray limestone), thus making the temple give the impression as if it is “sprouting” out of the earth. Iktinos incorporated archaic and classical elements, combining all the three orders of antiquity –Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. The essential building element however, was light itself. A column that was placed in a wellcalculated point of the structure would reflect the first light of

The goddess Demeter was sad. She was sad and furious. Pluto, the ruler of Hades had kidnapped her daughter Persephone. He made her his bride and held her by force in his dark kingdom. The land also commiserated with the grief of the goddess of fertility. The seeds would not germinate, the soil was barren and people were dying of starvation. Zeus asked Pluto to set Persephone free. He obeyed, but cunning as he was he gave her pomegranate seeds and in doing so, she was committed to him forever. Ever since, the daughter of Demeter shares her time between the two worlds. Once the weather cools, she descends and lives with her detestable husband. A few months later, she returns to her mother and into the light. That is when the plants bloom and the regenerated earth is overwhelmed with the splendour of images, scents and sensations. It is spring. A season dedicated to love and the joy of life, but also a cursory season, fleeting. Let’s make a rendezvous with spring and search for it wherever it manifests. This beauty cannot wait.

spring. Some archaeologists contend that it symbolizes Apollo himself, in an ancient aniconic (abstract) form. Moreover, in contrast to the ancient Greek architectural rules that have the temples face to the East, the temple of Apollo Epicurius faces towards the North. That is the point from which the god would arrive and participate in the spring festivities of nature.
Zeus’ playground
In the mountains of Figaleia lived a multitude of nymphs, dryads and other mythical creatures of the forest. According to a variation of the prevailing theogonic myth, it was there that Zeus had fled as an infant and not Crete. More specifically, when Kronos sought to devour his own son, his wife Rhea tricked him by giving him a stone to swallow. She then brought young Zeus to Peloponnisos and entrusted him to the nymph Neda. She hid him in a cave at mount Lykaion, where the raging river named after her, would bath him. This same river still flows in the narrow gorge permeated with the fragrance of mountain herbs. Walking there, the traveller comes across yet another wonder of Greek nature, the waterfalls of Neda. The waters tumble from the vertical walls causing a deafening sound, while at any given moment unexpected encounters take place with small creatures of the gorge: hares, otters, reptiles, crabs, fish and millions of playful blue dragonflies that flirt around carefree. This is an ideal place for someone to not only to escape from Kronos, but also from the tensions of modern life.
Notes
** In the villages of the mountainous Peloponnese, you can buy excellent quality pasta, as well as herbs, dairy products, honey, chestnuts, cherries and wine. ** There are many options for accommodation in the villages of Andritsaina, Vitina, Dimitsana and Stemnitsa. ** Although for years it has been sheltered under a canvas awning, one can still visit the imposing the temple of Apollo Epicurius. The awning will be removed once the conservation is complete.
Spring Chios In the mansions of Kampos
When you visit Chios in the spring, you are welcomed by an intoxicating blend of aromas. Much of the fragrance emerges from the traditional settlement of Kampos, just six kilometres from the island’s capital. Arriving there, at first you only see the distinctive, elaborate walls that outline each farmyard. Hidden behind them though, are little paradises of blooming citrus trees: orange trees, lemon trees, kumquat trees and most certainly the famous tangerine trees of Chios. Thankfully, a lot of the house

gates are spread open to welcome guests. You can stroll along the pebble and cobbled paved alleys, admire the blossoming gardens and drink water from the old wheel well. Above all, you can admire the imposing mansions, many of which were built centuries ago during the time of the Genoese conquerors. They are two or three storey buildings, with arched windows and painted ceilings, all comprising an unimpeachable testimony to the old prosperity of the island. Right there on the spot, you can try the products of each farmhouse and have a sense of well being in its simplest and purest form.
The precious tear
When leaving Kampos and heading southwest, the fragrance of the atmosphere is transformed. We find ourselves in the territory of the most renowned product of Chios, mastic. The famous aromatic resin comes from the trunk of the mastic tree (pistacia lentiscus), an evergreen shrub that lives more than one hundred years that does not exceed a height of two to three metres. This plant also grows in several other parts of the Mediterranean. It is only in Chios though, exclusively in this particular region that it is able to produce mastic. At this time of year, the mastic trees have bloomed as they patiently wait for summer to arrive. Then the farmers will perform the first “kentisma”, in other words small incisions in the trunk so the mastic will drip, like a translucent tear. It will then be harvested, dried and consumed as is, or used for products that have it as their basis: food, beverages, sweets, soap, cosmetics, medicine... Scientific studies have shown that mastic can heal skin diseases, help reduce cholesterol and hypertension, but it also has antiseptic and aphrodisiac properties. It is undoubtedly a precious gift from nature. A great experience is also visiting producer villages, the socalled Masticochoria (Mesta, Pyrgi, Olympi, Kalamoti, Armolia, Vesa and others), the medieval settlement-fortresses that are still bustling. Mesta is the best preserved. The stronghold wall of the adjoining houses of the outer perimeter used to protect the settlement from raiders. The internal is a picturesque grid of alleys, archways and old masonry walls decorated with flowering bougainvillea. All roads lead to the captivating public square where the local delicacies are served. The spring tour of Chios should not exclude the wildflowers. The locals are very proud of their ruby lalades, a type of tulip that stretches to the mountains and rural areas like a red carpet, enchanting with their intense and transient beauty.
Notes
** Chios is renowned for its flavours and products: mastic products, citrus fruits, spoon sweets, macaroons, ouzo, suma (a type of alcoholic beverage), liqueur wine, dairy products, kopanisti (cheese in paste form), Chian tomatoes, meatballs with ouzo, red sauce octopus with ouzo, kapouska (pork with cabbage) and more. ** During the Easter celebration in the village of Vrontados, a thrilling firework battle between neighbourhoods takes place. It is the so-called “rouketopolemos” (rocket war). ** Some of the old mansions of Kampos have been converted into guesthouses and are an excellent option for accomodation.
当敌人的战船将要接近阿提卡时,苏 纽的守卫兵会马上注意到,并以friktoria(通过燃烧的火炬传达信息 的古代信标通信系统)发出信号。

In order to hookup with the Greek spring, one does not have to travel to some distant part of the country. A few kilometres from the capital’s centre is a place where the regenerated nature subtly adorns a long lasting history. It is Cape Sounio, the beachfront bastion of ancient Athens, the mythical place where King Aegeas in despair, took his own life mistakenly believing that the Minotaur had killed his son Theseus. Its importance for the city’s safety was enormous. When enemy ships would approach Attica, they would immediately be noticed by the guards in Sounio who would then signal with friktoria - a system of beacon communication by lighting torches. In the 5th century B.C., at the highest point of the fortified settlement, one of the most beautiful ancient Greek temples was built, on the site of a much older temple that was destroyed during the Persian Wars. It was dedicated to Poseidon the almighty god of the sea, where the robust Doric columns visible from afar, would be a point of reference for sailors and navigators. Travellers from ancient to modern times would inscribe their names on the temple, in a vain attempt to connect with eternity. One of them was Lord Byron, who visited the temple in 1810 and his signature is visible on one of the columns. Fortunately nowadays, nobody can repeat such a deed. Still, one can wander on the lush hills of the archaeological site, breathe in the sea air as well as the scent of the blooming plants and see tens of wild partridges that, like modern seekers, have sought refuge in the temple of Poseidon. One can also certainly witness the legendary Sounio sunset, with the luminous disk submerging into the Saronic Gulf as it paints the ancient columns bright red.
City of the mines
The main source of wealth of ancient Athens was found a few kilometres from Sounio at the mines of Lavrio. Thanks to the rich deposits of silver, the Athenians would inexhaustibly cut coins and financially dominate throughout the Greek world. The mines were abandoned at the time of the Roman conquest and remained idle until the 19th century, when they reopened. This second “spring’’ of Lavrio has endowed the city with rare samples of industrial architecture. A visit to the Mining Museum of Lavrio is worthwhile, where one can get a glimpse of the daily life of old-time miners. Located nearby, is the archaeological site of Thorikos. It was one of the earliest settlements in Attica, a fortress that protected the mines from raids. The main attraction is the ancient theatre, perhaps the oldest in Greece (6th century B.C.), with its surprisingly peculiar elliptical shape. In the picturesque old market of Lavrio, next to the fish markets and the other commercial stores are small restaurants that serve fresh fish and seafood. Place me on Sunium’s marbled steep, Where nothing, save the waves and I, May hear our mutual murmurs sweep; There, swan-like, let me sing and die (Byron, The Isles of Greece) – translation: Argiris Eftaliotis

In the springtime, Zeus’ perpetual romantic mood would reach its zenith. When he saw Aegina, the beautiful daughter of the river Asopos, it was impossible to contain himself. He transformed into an eagle, grabbed her and flew to an uninhabited island. Hidden there, far from the eye of -the once again deceived - Hera, they indulged in a divine romance. Nine months later, Aegina gave birth to a son, Aiakos. Zeus named the island after his mistress and turned the ants of an oak tree into humans, so his son would not feel lonely. Historians have a more prosaic theory about the habitation of Aegina. They say its inhabitants came from the Peloponnese. Their Doric origin, along with the islands short distance from Athens, at that time inhabited by Ionians, contributed to the competitive relationship between the two city-states. The power of Athens obliged the people of Aegina to come up with inventive defense fortifications. For example, they constructed artificial reefs outside the port capable of sinking any enemy ship. Aegina can also boast an economic preeminence, since in the late 7th century B.C. it was there where the first Greek coin was cut.
The vanished nymph
A few metres from the modern day harbour, archaeologists have brought to light findings from the prehistoric period to the medieval era, the most important of all being the remains of Apollo’s Temple, which dates to the late 6th century B.C. The most prominent landmark of Aegina, however, is located on the northwestern tip of the island, on the top of a pinecovered hill, which during springtime is filled with natural fragrances. It is an imposing Doric temple from 500 B.C., with ornate pediments depicting

Aegina A love of Zeus
scenes from the Trojan War. The view from the ancient site is majestic. On a clear day, one can see both the Acropolis in Athens, as well as the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio. For centuries, explorers and travellers were convinced that such a glorious place of worship could only belong to a firstclass ancient god - Zeus or Athena. In the end, an inscription proved that both the old sanctum as well as the impressive temple was built in honour of a lesser-known deity, named Aphaia. Her name means vanished, disappeared. Many identify her with the nymph Britomartis or Diktynna, a patroness of fishermen, who while being pursued by Minos, escaped from Crete and arrived in Aegina and hid in the dense vegetation.
Note
Aegina is justly famed for its peanuts. They are top quality, taste great and give a distinct aroma wherever they are used. Included in the island’s gastronomic specialties is the katsoula, a reddish fish usually served fried.
On the banks of Strymonas An archaeological mystery
The Trojan War was the cause of losing a myriad of mythical heroes. Among them was Rhesus, the son of Strymonas king of Thrace. The young hero fought on the side of the Trojans, until he fell dead by the hand of Odysseas. When Strymonas heard the terrible news, he committed suicide by falling in the nearby river that was named after him, which flows slowly and sadly. Whether it was sad or not, the Strymonas river had enormous significance to the ancient Greeks. Thanks to it, they could move to the rich hinterland of Thrace and have access to timber, the gold-bearing deposits and to other equally valuable commodities. The Athenians had been coveting the region for years. Finally, they conquered it and in 437 B.C. founded Amphipoli on the river’s estuary. Later on, the city fell to the Spartans. Nonetheless, its heyday came when the Macedonian kings conquered it.
The gigantic burial monuments dating from that era, have given birth to one of the greatest contemporary archeological mysteries. Are they in any way connected to Alexander the Great and his close circle? The verdict is not yet out. In this flourishing region there are still many impressive monuments. Among them a rare sculpture, the Lion of Amphipolis, a monument of military glory, with a height of five and a half metres, that dates to the 4th century B.C.
The kingdom of the birds
Long before reaching the region of Amphipoli, the river Strymonas enriches with its waters the artificial lake Kerkini. Thus, a uniquely beautiful wetland is created, an ideal destination for ecotourism. Protected by the International Convention of Ramsar, the area hosts a plethora of rare mammals such as the otter, jackals, wildcats and the roe. However, the undisputed rulers of Kerkini are the birds. During springtime, a large number of winged travellers gather there, including rare or endangered species, such as the pygmy cormorant, the Pelecanus crispus and the golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos. The lake echoes with bird sounds and fluttering and the bird watching enthusiasts are in paradise. There are many ways for one to enjoy this damp foggy scenery and calming beauty of springtime Kerkini. One can go hiking, biking and horseback riding on the river banks or board one of the “plaves” boats of the lake and get to a safe distance from the birds that perch by the waters. One might even head to the nearby foothills of Mount Beles and to the picturesque village of Ano Poroia. The lake view from there is truly hearty.
Note
** There are numerous culinary temptations to be found in Kerkini. Among them, the pereki (a local Pontic pie) and various dishes with quail, wild boar and deer. The buffalo meat and milk, sausages, pasta and trout are also excellent. ** There are several guesthouses in both the banks of Kerkini as well as the surrounding villages. The larger hotels are in the nearby city of Serres.

twelve years old and sings the aria “Un bel di vedremo” from Madame Butterfly. On the show she is introduced as Nina Foresti, the supposed daughter of an Italian doctor, believing that an Italian origin was better suited to a child singing almost like a mature soprano. Before she began, she stated decisively: “My ambitions, Lord, are very high.” Her wishes were bound to fulfill. The imprint that Callas left in the 20th century goes beyond the boundaries of her art. Especially today, in an age dominated by imagery and the democratization of the arts, Maria Callas embodies the idea of opera itself: As the audience of high culture broadens, the divine Maria brings two worlds together – one of aristocratic finesse and lavish cosmopolitanism who mingled comfortably in the fully-lit halls of Venetian palazzos and Parisian Hôtels and the world of popular culture, which after the Second World War was advancing and craved for the ephemeral, the comfortable lifestyle and cheap travels, embraced technology and found in art a liberating entertainment mechanism and a liberation by way of entertainment. Callas was the priestess of high art with the delicate glow of a pop star and a pop star with the sensitivity and elegance of an aristocrat with centuries of tradition. In 1937, shortly before the outbreak of the World War, her mother divorces her father and returns to Greece with Maria and her younger sister. They settle in a beautiful building opposite the Archaeological Museum on Patission Street. Maria studies on a scholarship at the National Conservatory and in 1940, at the age of 17 makes her first professional appearance at the Greek National Opera, housed in the Ziller Building on Agiou Konstantinou street. In 1947, she finds herself in Verona, Italy, where apart from the first artistic triumph in the Verona Arena with Ponchielli’s La Gioconda (an opera primarily known for the «Dance of the Hours») she meets two important men in her life: the conductor Tullio Serafin, who became her tutor, and the businessman of the brick industry, Giovanni Battista Meneghini. The love between them was instantaneous and mutual and lead to a fulfilled relationship. Meneghini becomes her husband and impresario, a mentor who transforms the inept Greek girl to an otherworldly goddess of the lyrical theatre, a Mediterranean priestess who will shine in the mythology of the 20th century. The decade of 1950’s was the culmination of Callas. In 1951 she enchants the demanding audience of La Scala in Milan with the Sicilian Vespers of Verdi, the political masterpiece that speaks of the liberation of Sicily by the French occupation in the 13th century. In 1957, she returns to Greece for the famous concert in Herodio, the Roman theatre of dazzling beauty and exquisite acoustics below the Acropolis. At the end of 50’s, her voice deteriorated. Was it fatigue, the sudden weight loss, or shaken self-confidence to blame? There are many theories. Maria sings for the last time in a concert in 1965, performing Norma once again at the Opera house in Paris. From then onwards, her appearances will be limited to recitals. Nevertheless, the 1960’s decade was decisive for her legacy. Her glow was even more radiant, this time not only because of her artistic influence, but also due to her public and private life.
leading role in his film Medea, which he directs in 1969. It is Maria’s only film. During the next few years, she gave only a few triumphant recitals. At the Paris Opera in 1973, the audience demanded 10 encores. Her last performance was at Saporo, Japan in 1974. Three years later, in 1977 she died in Paris. Recent studies contend that her death was probably due to myopathy and perhaps that was the reason for the gradual loss of her voice. Even seeing one of the numerous performances and concerts of Maria Callas on film with the sound muted, one can realise her musical genius. Just observing her facial contractions as she sings, seeing her eyes as they react and blink to every note and every intense dramatic moment, sweeping the awestruck audience that is magnetised by their dark and dismal power. This is the power that made Maria Callas not only the greatest diva opera has ever known, but also one of the greatest legends of our time. Calla’s ashes were scattered in 1979 in the Aegean, according to her wishes. “One fine day she will see a wisp of smoke and his ship will enter the harbour” From the aria “Un Bel di Vedremo” in Madame Butterfly
Impressive fur bolero made by natural white mink, with shawl collar and fur button, by Birger Christensen, the official supplier of the Queen of Denmark. Its lining is embroidered with Callas’ first name “Maria” copied by her signature. Possibly a present from Onassis. Callas wore this garment in many occasions during the ‘60’s.

Documenta climbs the Acropolis The international innovation of modern art “walks” this summer in the ancient paths around the Sacred Rock.

ocumenta, along with the Venice Biennale, is perhaps the most important contemporary art exhibition in the world. Since its inception in 1955 by German artist and curator Arnold Bode, it is held every five years in Kassel, a small town in central Germany, on the Fulda River. As its name suggests (document/file), Bode’s intention was to record and showcase art that had been banned and suppressed by the Nazi regime: Picasso and the cubists, Surrealism and Jean Cocteau, expressionism and the German New Objectivity movement. With Documenta, Germany wanted to weave anew its relations with culture, which had been destroyed by the rage of war. Since then, through its experimental, innovative and often combative political character, this exhibition serves as the primary expression giving voice to the European spirit. 2017 will be a milestone for Documenta, since for the first time, it will also be held in another city other than Kassel, namely Athens, a city that in recent years has become an international point of reference by reflecting the political, economic and social developments of the European community. So, from the 8th of April until the 16th of July, modern art will be beating to the pulse of the Greek capital, whereas from the 10th of June to the 17th of September, its counterpart exhibition will be held in Kassel. Among the places that Documenta will be showcasing in Athens, is one that holds a key position in the heart of the city, a constant reminder that history is a continuous ubiquity for Athens. It is Dionysiou Aeropagitou and more broadly, the area that the great architect Dimitris Pikionis has developed around the Acropolis.

The reflection of a procession
Dimitris Pikionis, an architect, painter and professor at the National Technical University, was the main representative of modernism in Greece and is considered the greatest Greek architect of the 20th century. Before Pikionis, the dominant architectural tendency in Athens was neoclassicism, which left its mark in the entire city with monumental buildings, such as the Panepistimio (University), the Academy or Zappeio, where the columns, statues and pediments resemble ancient Greek temples. It also left a mark in the humble houses below Plaka, in Keramikos and Metaxourgio, with the acroteria (crown tiles) and roof tiles like the buildings from the 5th century B.C., confirming that since Ancient Greece until today, the national and cultural continuity is ingrained in the city’s buildings. Dimitris Pikionis shifted the focus from ancient Greek architecture to popular traditional architecture that was closer to nature, the earth and the sun. For him, the Athenian landscape did not only include the weight of history with its ancient and daunting temples. The landscape was principally the notion of experience and the senses, the heat of the sun and the scent of oregano on the slopes of Attica, the texture of the stone and the view of the mountains as one stands and sees the hill of Hymettus unfolding up to the sea Pikionis has constructed many buildings in Attica, the most famous being the primary school in Pefkakia near the square of Omonia, but his most exemplary work undoubtedly is the development of the area surrounding the Acropolis. The architect undertook the project design mandate in 1954 by the then Public Works Minister and subsequently powerful Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis. It was a time where Greece was making the first steps towards its touristic development, promoting the Ancient Greek heritage as the country’s main attraction, combined with the experience of the sea, the sun and enjoyment. Indeed, anyone who has visited the Acropolis has walked on the cobblestone paths with the rough large stones and grass growing in between. Radii, intersections and various levels that give the impression of a never ending route, as the paths lead to the Acropolis and create a seamless way which increasingly sinks into the light. Pine trees, lentisk (schinus), stones and bird sounds are all an earthly construct captured and executed by the architectural genius of Pikionis.
A part of the Documenta 2017 exhibition is organized in this area of Athens. More specifically, the exhibition will be inaugurated in Athens with a horseback procession mounted by men and women who will ride on the encircling cobbled pavement designed by Dimitris Pikionis around the Acropolis. This procession is indeed a representation and revival of the Panathenaic procession as depicted on the Parthenon frieze. The Panathinaia was the most important festival of ancient Athens in honour of the goddess Athena, the city’s patron. Portrayed on the Parthenon frieze were about 400 human and animal depictions, mainly of horses. The largest part was of men and women on their way to a sacrificial offering to the goddess. The original frieze had a length of 160 metres, of which 50 are in Athens and 80 in the British Museum in London. By choosing to organise such a big artistic event in the area around the Acropolis, Documenta merges all the symbolisms together that could act as an exhilarating converging point for today’s world. The power of history along with the wisdom of the earth and soil, the significance of knowledge and the living experience, the animal and human element, the concept of a global community parading under the sun.

The characteristic frosted orange peels coated with chocolate couverture are a must. Maria Callas, Jackie Kennedy and Grace Kelly have paid a visit here in order to taste the handmade chocolates of Aristokratikon, a favourite of the Athenian bourgeois, which opened in 1928 on the street of Voukourestiou.
