Beginning year 11

I

t’s hard for me to believe that this will be my 11th year to cover high school football. I’ve seen so many games over the years that it’s hard for me to keep up with them all. I’ve seen shootouts, strange games and even a 6-5, which probably works better as a baseball score instead of a football score. Of all of the stops that I’ve made over the years, Hartselle has seen more success than any other team that I’ve covered. Hartselle won its first 19 games that I covered, including a 13-3 state championship win over Vigor at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Unfortunately, last year wasn’t quite as successful, but the Tigers never gave up throughout the season and

August 28, 2013

got back to the state quarterfinals again. The expectations for the Tigers are still as high as they were when I first came to Hartselle. Looking at our other schools, Falkville is hoping to do much more than just make the playoffs. They want to make a deep run. Priceville, Danville and Brewer are all hoping to do their best to get back into playoff contention. Could one or all of them make it this year? We’ll find out over the next 10 weeks of the season. We hope you enjoy this year’s Football 2013 magazine. Please feel free to let us know what you think about it. Feel free to contact me at brent.maze@hartselleenquirer.com.

2013 Hartselle High School

Looking for leadership After losing a deep senior class, Tigers are looking for players to step into new roles

H

artselle head coach Bob Godsey knows that his team has done just about everything it could to prepare for the 2013 season. Summer workouts were good. Preseason drills went well for the Tigers. The only thing that Hartselle’s 2013 squad lacks is experience. The Tigers return just 11 players who saw significant playing time a year ago. Of those, only two were offensive starters and five started on defense. “I think we’ve done just about everything we could this summer,” Godsey said. “The kids have done everything that

we’ve asked them to do. The only thing we don’t really have is game experience.” Gone are 21 seniors who played a huge part of the Tigers’ success over the last three seasons, including the school’s first state championship in 2011. “They were one of the best classes we’ve ever had,” Godsey said. “They won a lot of football games. They were a deep class with some good leaders.” While they have inexperience, Godsey believes that this year’s football team could be one of the more talented teams that Hartselle has fielded in a few years. “I think we have a lot of talent on our Football 2013

team,” Godsey said. “We have a lot of guys who can make plays on both sides of the ball. The key is how can they step into those new roles this season.”

Quarterback

Jake Tiffin, a southpaw sophomore, enters the season as the leader to replace two-year starter Deacon Aldridge at quarterback. Godsey said Tiffin played well in the Tigers’ spring game against Deshler, in which he threw two touchdowns with one interception. In the Tigers’ final scrimmage of the HARTSELLE continued on page 7

August 28, 2013

HARTSELLE, from 6 preseason, Tiffin also connected on several big passing plays, but he was also responsible for an interception. Godsey also plans to use junior Jamal Jackson some at quarterback, as a run-pass option, but Godsey didn’t categorize Jackson as a wildcat quarterback.

Running back

Masio Stover is back on offense for his senior season after spending last year on defense. He’s coming off an ACL injury this summer, but Godsey thinks he will be back to full strength this fall. Junior D’Andre Mack is moving up the depth chart after having a big spring. He scored the Tigers’ only rushing touchdown in the spring game against Deshler. Mack has shown explosive speed at times in limited action over the last two seasons. Zeth Malcolm will also split time between running back and receiver while senior Colton Burks will see time at fullback, along with his HARTSELLE2, continued on page 8

Kodi Kodra and Kris Doss will be the leading candidates to fill the important nose guard position in Hartselle’s 3-3 stack defense. At defensive end, Godsey is looking to Zach Pershin will anchor one side while Toby Swims will see time at defensive end, but he could also play some linebacker. Others will also factor into the defensive end race.

Linebackers

Linebacker could be a strength for the Tigers, as seniors Waid Miller and Dakota Youngblood will be returning. Miller will be a three-year starter for the Tigers and will be the quarterback on defense playing at middle linebacker. Others in the mix are senior Chase Gillott and junior Holden Langston.

Defensive backs

Hartselle returns a wealth of experience at defensive back. Twins Jaylan and Jamal Jackson will be starting cornerbacks after splitting time at that position last year. Jorden Robinson will be a key component of Hartselle’s defense again this year. Caleb Finn is also competing for a spot.

Special teams

The player earning the highest praise for his offseason workout schedule was Jack Waterman. The senior kicker could be an important asset for the Tigers.

Good Luck Teams!!!!

“Jack Waterman may be the most improved player on our team,” Godsey said. “He became our kicker over the second half of the season last year and he’s continued to improve. He’s been out here every day working on his kicking. He’s a guy that you’d really like to see succeed because he’s worked so hard.” Wiggins has also been solid in the punting game during the summer.

Overview

Godsey thinks the team is capable of being good. “I think have some talented players on offense. We just don’t have much experience. On defense, I think we have a chance to be pretty good. “The key for us is to continue to improve every day,” Godsey added.

aid Miller may not be as vocal as some players, but his actions speak loud and clear. The senior middle linebacker on Hartselle’s 3-3 stack defense will be starting for his third year at Hartselle High School. He’s embracing his new role of being the quarterback of the defense. “I’ve played mostly at left outside linebacker and right outside linebacker,” Miller said. “I like it better at middle linebacker. I’m more comfortable there.” In the 3-3 stack, Hartselle head coach

August 28, 2013

Bob Godsey knows how important it is to be strong up the middle, especially at the middle linebacker position. He said he’s impressed with Miller’s work ethic, especially during the offseason. “Waid has become a really good leader for our football program,” Godsey said. “He came on as a sophomore and earned a starting role. He continually got better and he’s had a great offseason coming into preseason camp.” Being a team leader is something that’s not uncommon to Miller. In eighth grade, Waid Miller played quar-

terback, which is the reason why he wears the No. 9 jersey. “It’s my responsibility to get everybody in the right place,” Miller said. “The biggest thing I’ve been working on this summer has been my technique and making sure I’m doing things the right way.” Miller said his team has high goals for this season. “Everything is going good during camp,” Miller said. “We have a lot of expectations for this season. The key for us is to keep working and getting better each day.

rewer’s head football coach Dan Styles is starting his second season at Brewer and is continuing his commitmentfocused style of coaching. “We will get to return some players who have started in years past, but didn’t get to see a down last year due to commitment or conduct issues,” Styles said. “Last year we played a lot of younger guys with less experience, so it was tough, but now they have experience to take the team further this season. Everyone knows what I expect out of them, and this season will hopefully turn out different.” Page 12

Even though Styles said about 90 percent of the players who started at the end of last season are returning, the team lost 12 seniors to graduation. They are Weston Pritchett, Cody McKee, Ethan Holmes, Eli Mullins and Devin Crowe on offense and Michael Easter, Devon Greene and Jacob Mayo on defense. Returning starters include defensive backs/wide receivers Caleb Humphries, Louis Daugette, Drew Styles and Austin Crouch; wide receivers Nick Humphries and Ty Brown; linebackers Kolton Bramlett, Gavin Artiss and Jade Blocker; defensive Football 2013

Styles feels their team has filled key positions well. “Our skill positions are as good as anywhere,” Styles said. “They have shown me skill on both sides of the ball.” Despite the amount of younger guys who gained valuable experience last year, Styles says there is still a learning curve because of the new system brought in last year. “We still have a lot of relatively young key players,” Styles said. “Our offensive line has a lot of inexperienced guys because that’s where we lost the most starters. anville varsity football hopes to make last year’s weakness into a strength this season. Head Coach Scott Curd feels they have the experience they were lacking last fall to play the full four quarters of each game. “We led eight games last year going into the fourth quarter, but we still came out with only four wins,” Curd said. “We lost three of those games within the last minute of the game. I think inexperience kept us from knowing how to handle those situations, but

this year we should feel more comfortable and learn to finish strong.” Danville lost 10 seniors including eight starters, most playing both offense and defense. They are quarterback Justin Morgan, running back and defensive lineman Justin Hannah, offensive and defensive lineman Hunter Laroche, offensive and defensive lineman Tyler Jolley, offensive lineman Evan Anderson, defensive player Aaron Anderson, defensive player Josh Stover and kicker Brock Garrison. These returning players are guys we can count on, and I have confidence in all of them, no matter if they were starters or not.” Coach Curd and the team have an ultimate vision of being the best Danville team they can be this year. “We could set our sites on a winning season or a certain round of playoffs, but that goal isn’t enough if players think it’s too hard or too easy,” Curd said. “Playing to the best of our ability takes work every single day.” Danville has hosted some seven-onseven games this summer, but Curd doesn’t put too much stock into the results. “We use the off-season games as a time for us to grow and evaluate ourselves,” Curd said. “It’s been a produc-

alkville’s varsity football has an unusually large senior class this year. FALKVILLE, from 20 looking for a spot on defense, Garth Enochs, a sophomore with potential at wide receiver, and Canaan Smith, a senior hoping to start on the offensive line, have already impressed Coach Schrenk this off-season. Despite having a promising senior class, Coach Schrenk says they lack depth and don’t have many backups, especially on the offensive and defensive lines. Coach Schrenk says this is a problem most 1A schools face, so his players will have to stay healthy this year. The team’s motto for the season is “Finish.” Coach Schrenk started thinking about this idea at halftime of the first round of playoffs before Pickens County put them out. “I realized we needed to learn how to finish the game strong,” Schrenk said. “We had shirts made up with he phrase to stay focused on it. We should be able to do that with maturity and

One day at a time More depth gives Priceville Bulldogs a bigger bite as the 2013 season nears

riceville’s varsity football team wants to get better every day this season. Head coach Dirk Strunk made this commitment the team’s goal. “We have to take everything one day, one game at a time,” Strunk said. “It’s a work in progress. We have to grow a little bit every single day.” The team lost 14 seniors last year, including 10 starters. They are kicker, wide receiver and safety Nick Bell; full back Forrest Clemmons; Page 24

running back Trey Jones; right guard Eric Monk; left guard Kyle Taylor; defensive end Kobi Mears; outside lineman Aaron Edwards; inside lineman Klayton Bodley; defensive end Nathan Collier and outside lineman Evan Pestona. Last year’s seniors will be missed, but Priceville has 13 starters returning to the lineup this year, seven on offense and six on defense. Offensive returning starters are quarterback Kaleb Barker; slot backs Strazelle Jiminez and Aaron Cartee; wide receiver Sam Brandon; offenFootball 2013

Defensive returning starters are linebackers Lucas Chaney and Zac Smith and defensive backs Daniel Barnett, Ben Patterson, Michael Whitefield and Lamar Burch. Last year’s reserve Jake Crow has shown potential over the summer and is now competing for a position as the starting fullback. Several newcomers are expected to be influential this season, already earning starting PHS continued on page 25

Ben Patterson is a 5-8, 160-pound defensive back, and Sky Jones is a 6-4, 300-pound offensive lineman. Head coach Dirk Strunk considers depth to be the Bulldogs greatest strength this season. “For the first time in the three years I’ve been coaching here, we have depth,” Strunk said. “Everyone knows their role instead of having to juggle back and forth between lots of different roles.” Priceville is also depending on good senior leadership, Strunk said. The seniors and the rest of the team will have to overcome the disappointment they felt from last year’s 2-8 record.

ast year, Austin’s Black Bears went into battle with 10 returning starters and most of them were defensive players. This year, they have nine starters returning and eight of them are offensive players. “It’s a complete turnaround,” said fourth year head coach Jeremy Perkins. “Last year, we were fortunate to have our defense step up and take up the slack for the offense. Now, it’s going to be up to the offense to return the favor.” Perkins believes he and his assistants can find enough players in his squad of 103 prospects to meet that challenge and improve on an 8-3 overall record and a third place finish in regional competition. However, he’s not discounting the value of the 34 players who graduated. Six of them are now playing football on scholarship at four-year colleges. Perkins said he considers offense to be the strength of the Black Bears with the return of four experienced linemen and a quarterback. “But we don’t return a lot of experience on defense,” he pointed

out. “We do have some talent, however, and there’s a lot of competition for positions.” Perkins said his players made good progress gaining size and strength in the off-season and came into pre-season in good condition. They defeated Huntsville 6-0 in a spring jamboree and compiled an 18-5 record in 7-on-7 competitions at two camps. “Our goal is for each player to reach his full potential and the team to rise to the level of a state championship,” Perkins said. The Class 6A Black Bears compiled an 8-3 overall record in 2012, finished third in Region 8 and was eliminated by Pell City in the first round of the state playoffs. “I expect all of the teams in our region to be better than they were a year ago,” Perkins said. ”Florence probably has the most talent and Bob Jones is always very competitive. They’re probably the favorites to finish one-two in 2013.”

“Overcoming a lack of experience on defense and developing an effective kicking game are the biggest challenges facing the Black Bears,” Perkins pointed out. “Other concerns are building team chemistry and the mental and emotional aspects of the game.” “What I really like about this group of players is their love of the game and their willingness to go the extra mile to succeed.” Perkins added. Working with Perkins as assistant coaches are Drew Willis, offensive coordinator and running backs and quarterbacks; Jason Simmons, defensive coordinator and linebackers; Matt Praytor, offensive line; Alan Watkins, receivers; Josh Louallen, safeties; Darrius Atkins, quarterbacks; Mitchell Know, corner backs; and Paul Averitt, defensive line. continuity through winter and summer. Hopefully, that will continue through preseason practice.” “Defense should be a team strength with the number of starters we have back;” Adcock pointed out. “On the other hand, we have to replace the line, receivers and running backs on offense.” Adcock said two team goals stand out. “As always, winning a region championship is a goal,” he pointed out. “We haven’t done that since 2007. Decatur football is seven wins away from 600 career wins. “That’s also something we’re pushing as a goal this season.” The Red Raiders will match up with Bob Jones, Florence, Hazel Green, Buckhorn, Sparkman, Austin and James Clemens in Region 8 competition. Adcock said he believes five or six teams in the region will be in the running to advance to the playoffs. “Our biggest challenge is to become a mature team,” Adcock stated. “This group is very excitable. They want things to happen too quickly instead of being patient and working the plan. A football season is long and tough. They need to be able to handle the grind.” Adcock said he still enjoys coaching after 17 years as Decatur’s head coach and 34 years of coaching football. “What wears on me is not the kids,” he pointed out, “it’s the changes and additions that have nothing to do with the game.” In addition to head coaching duties, Adcock works with quarterbacks and kickers. His assistant coachers and their responsibilities are: Lee Cagle, defensive coordinator and defensive backs; Kenny Morson, offensive coordinator and offensive backs; Brett Mask, Offensive line; Kevin McCravy, receivers; Kevin Lockhart, defensive line; Steve Netherton, linebackers; and kicking game and Rod Lovett strong safeties The Red Raiders will open their regular season against Athens on the road Aug. 30.

Older and wiser Rebels work to improve last season’s 1-9 record against challenging schedule

est Morgan’s Rebels were roughed up by nearly every team they played in 2012, limping home with a 1-9 record and no playoff berth in sight. But conditions are changing for the better. A roster of 20 varsity players has grown to 38 and the four freshmen linemen who saw battle in the trenches a year ago are now sophomores with a year of experience under their belts. “We were a very young team

last year and we paid the price,” said second year head coach Heath Saint. “We’re still young but more experienced. This group of players tries hard to do what you ask them to do. They’re a lot stronger physically than they were last year and they’re hungry for success. “As far as team goals are concerned, he added, “we want to better last year’s record and be competitive in every game we play.” The Rebels lost only five players to graduation but one of them was

the team’s leading ball carrier. Demetrius Warren ran for 1,400 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also was a starting linebacker. Graduating with him were offensive lineman Nick Rogers, fullback/ linebacker Joseph Clem, center Logan Johnson and kicker Artero Contreres. in the off season, lifting weights and taking part in conditioning drills, and started preseason practice with added weight and muscle and in good condition. They implemented an I-formation and wing slot offense in the spring and a 5-2 defense. The Rebels participate in Class 3A, Region 7, one of the toughest regions in the state. Region opponents are Madison Academy, Deshler, Colbert County, Elkmont, Clements, Lauderdale County and Westminster. The top four teams advanced to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs last season, two of them made it to the semi-finals and Madison County won the Class 3A state championship. Madison Academy and Deshler will be strong again,” said Saint, “and they’re probably the teams you’ll have to beat to get in the playoffs. Saint said the biggest challenge his team faces is developing speed and depth.

A prayer for coaches Editor’s Note: The following letter was written by Weezer Prayer Group, which is made up of local women. They sent this to the Hartselle High School football coaches. This letter is used by permission of the group members.

Hartselle Bob Godsey talks with Jamal Jackson and D’Andre Mack during practice.

“And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14 Greetings! Tonight you are being lifted up in prayer! We are praising God for your willingness to pick up this physical and spiritual burden called “COACHING”. We believe that education, especially coaching, is a “calling”, a ministry of God. We are thankful for your servant’s heart and your obvious devotion to building the character of our local youth through the experience of athletics. Tonight we are also praying that God will burden your heart for what in many circumstances appears to be a confused and much tempted generation. Substance use is rampant. Teenage promiscuity is almost a given. Our youth are pressured on every turn to be more and do more than any previous generation. Because of these pressures, many very gifted young people suffer from tragic self esteem issues. To make life even more complicated, this group of teens is the most financially spoiled generation to date! It’s a perfect storm for many to get lost at sea. Some give up on life. Others decide that they are untouchable and the rules don’t apply to them. Most are troubled. Few emerge unscathed. We are praying that God will give you a heart for the troubled as well as for those who appear able to rise above the storm. We pray that God will give to you the heart of Jesus when he said in Luke 5:31 “ It is not the healthy who need a Page 38

doctor, but the sick.” We are praying for educators and coaches who will fiercely stand in the gap for our troubled youth. We pray for your courage to say and do what may be very unpopular at the time, when it is for the ultimate betterment of a young person’s character. We pray that the most important thing will always be the content of a player’s character and not how many points they can put on a scoreboard. We pray that God will give you the ability to love the unlovable and see broken hearts where others may only see poor choices. We are praying that God will always show you how to care, how to confront, how to encourage and how to build character in those youth who are struggling with the journey to young adulthood. Coaches touch young lives as no other educator or pastor or parent can. Coaches teach so many life lessons! They teach lessons about fairness, hanging tough when you want to give up, honesty, who’s got your back, and who cares enough Football 2013

to confront you to your face when you are headed in the wrong direction. It’s so much more than a job! Sometimes a coach may be the only person who can stand between a young person and certain disaster, as coaches have the divine opportunity to work so intimately with our youth. Tonight we are praising God for you, for your heart, and for the energy you have given so freely to our young people and to this community! We are praying that God will show you new ways to help those who are happy as well as those who are in pain. We are praying that God will bless you with a year like no other in His service! We also pray that God will lead you to share these words with your staff, as they too are under a covering of prayer! Many blessings on you and your staff as this new school year begins! You will all continue to be in our prayers! Weezer Prayer Group August 28, 2013
