Hartselle City Schools is adding to the quality of its elementary and intermediate math instruction with the addition of three math coaches. Beth Balch, Sarah Garner and Kayla Lawson will step into the new roles to support students and teachers in the upcoming school year. For more than 15 years Hartselle’s teachers have worked with the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) to enrich the quality of classroom math instruction. With the addition of the expectations set forth in
the 2022 Alabama Numeracy Act, HCS has sought to deliver even more resources to its math classrooms.
Superintendent Dr Brian Clayton is eager to provide the support.
“We are extremely excited to provide the resource of math coaches to our students and teachers. Research validates that this resource drives math achievement.”
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) endorses adding well-trained math coaches to classrooms to improve teacher instructional practice and remove obstacles to student achievement.
The math coaches look for-
ward to using their teacher talents intentionally. Balch has worked with AMSTI and has experience in instructional design and in working with both students and teachers to enhance math instruction. She said she looks forward to targeting students’ problemsolving and critical thinking through instruction “focused on foundational understanding that builds to a relevant application of math concepts in fun and meaningful ways. ” Garner agrees. “I am so excited for this opportunity to collaborate with teachers and invest in students. My relationship with AMSTI
and my classroom experience have prepared me to help provide proven strategies for targeted math instruction. I can’t wait to see our students soar,” she said. Lawson is in step. “I have a love for education, data-driven strategies, and small-group instruction that I cannot wait to bring to this new role. I want to empower teachers with the tools they need to help every child build confidence in math and achieve success,” Lawson added. Clayton sees these hires as a difference-maker “We look forward to our teachers’ and young scholars’ achievement.

Third and fourth grade students from Crestline Elementary have achieved notable success in the recent “Color the Concepts!” contest and the Alabama Stock Market Game.
Raydyn Morris, a fourth grade student at Crestline Elementary, was awarded the title of Alabama Grand Champion in the “Color the Concepts” contest. His illustration earned him a $100 grand prize. Additionally, Morris was one of the Top Ten winners in the Grades 4-8 Division, securing an additional $50. Another young artist from Crestline, Miken Draper, a third grade student, received Honorable Mention, earning a prize
for his effort.
Michael Holifield, a State Farm Agent in Hartselle, presented the awards at a ceremony held at Crestline, recognizing the achievements of these talented students. Their teacher, Dr Debbie Lee was also acknowledged with a $100 Amazon e-card for her guidance and support. The “Color the Concepts!” contest, organized by the Alabama Council on Economic Education (ACEE) and supported by State Farm, encourages K-8 students across Alabama to illustrate economic concepts creatively. This year, the contest received more than 700 submissions. The Top Ten illustrations were turned into posters and distributed to schools
statewide, highlighting the students’ artistic talents. The Grand Champion was selected based on the number of “likes” their illustration received on the ACEE Facebook page. Crestline Elementary students also excelled in the Alabama Stock Market Game. The team, led by Raydyn Morris as team captain, and comprising Lane Morehead and Greyson Barrier, placed fourth out of 566 teams in the North Region. The Stock Market Game is an online simulation that teaches students about global capital markets, investing and personal finance.
Competing against middle school teams and even surpassing some, Morris’s team amassed
an impressive $109,537.62. The students reflected on their experience, highlighting the valuable lessons they learned about stocks, investments, and teamwork.
“I learned that a stock is a small portion of a company and that stocks can be either good or bad…meaning they either make you money or they don’t,” Leyla Bawolek said. RaJah Doaty remarked, “Investing is good because you learn about money and businesses, which are valuable life lessons. My favorite part was calculating the numbers and watching my investments grow.”
Greyson Barrier enjoyed “checking my stocks daily and watching them grow.” Talon Way and Lucy Hulgan appreciated
“getting to work as a team and the challenge of picking winning stocks.” Hannah Smallwood found joy in “researching stocks, watching them for a while, and then picking the best ones. ” The ACEE aims to enhance understanding of economics, personal finance, and entrepreneurship through balanced and comprehensive teacher education programs and advocacy. This education empowers students to become informed and responsible adults capable of making sound financial decisions.

Priceville Elementary School is using a $10,000 contribution from the city to replace old furniture at the school, an official said Town Council members approved a $10,000 contribution to the elementary school during their meeting this week. Each year, the city gives money to the three Priceville schools, said City Clerk Shannon Weissand. The schools send letters of request regarding what they need and the city responds, she said.
“The money we give to the schools comes out of the general fund,” the clerk said. “The other schools have not sent their letters of request yet, but they will before October.”
Priceville Elementary Principal Daniel Gullion wrote a letter to the mayor and council that said when the new school was built in 2000, they had to use the old furniture from the old school instead of replacing it with new. The letter said the goal is to update two or three classrooms because many student desks that were brought over to the
elementary school come from the old school, the mayor said.
“We do appropriate to each of our schools — elementary, junior high and high school — and they write us a letter on what they are going to spend the money on,” Mayor Sam Heflin said.
Assistant Principal Brandy Quattlebaum said replacing furniture at the school is an ongoing project.
“Even though the state provides instructional money each year, it’s never enough to purchase the bigticket items like student desks and furniture.”
Priceville Elementary
“Our state funding is so limited as to what we can spend our money on,” Quattlebaum said. “That is something we have been working the past couple years on — remodeling and refurbishing and purchasing needs. This previous year we bought new science tables. We received help from Traditions Bank. Now we are going to spend the money on classroom tables
and chairs. This furniture won’t bring us up to date. We will still need some more at some point.”
The money won’t go to just one classroom but several, she said.
“Unfortunately, all that stuff costs a lot of money,” Quattlebaum said. “This money takes care of that; it helps make it go a long way. ” The furniture is very expensive, she said, sometimes $1,000 just for a table. She hopes a partner in education will be able to help them in the future
The Partners-In-Education program links area businesses and industries with schools in Decatur, Hartselle and Morgan County to provide educational opportunities for the students and increase awareness of area businesses and industries, according to the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce The elementary school has been without a partner now for about 1.5 years, Quattlebaum said. The school at 438 Cave Spring Road has students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

Police on Thursday arrested a couple accused of using the stolen identity of an 86-yearold family member to open numerous bank and credit card accounts, according to a Priceville Police Department statement. Kristopher James Clemons, 37, and his wife Rox-
ann Hardiman-Clemons, 39, are each charged with firstdegree financial exploitation of the elderly, first-degree theft, trafficking stolen identities and chemical endangerment of a child, according to Priceville PD They both remained in Morgan County Jail on Friday in lieu of $210,000 bonds. Willie Elbert Wherley, 58, was also at the Clemons
residence on Shoal Creek Road when police executed a search warrant Thursday, according to Priceville PD He is charged with chemical endangerment of a child and remained in Morgan County Jail on Friday in lieu of a $10,000 bond
“Two juveniles present at the residence were released to the custody of DHR,” Priceville PD said.
Priceville police said they began investigating Kristopher Clemons after he was arrested and charged with possessing a forged instrument on April 26. According to an investigator’s affidavit, Clemons and HardimanClemons had been using bank accounts and credit cards belonging to Hardiman-Clemons’ grandfather “There appears to be six
checking accounts and 29 credit/debit cards in the Clemons PayPal account that are in the name of (the grandfather),” the affidavit reads. The grandfather had filed three reports of identity theft since 2019, according
to the affidavit, and Clemons possessed a “substantial” number of stolen identities. Priceville police said the case remains open as other offenders have been identified and are expected to face charges.

ForMorganStiles and Kaelyn Jones, it was aweirdfeeling
Thetwo areused to sharing asoftball field as rivals, with Stiles having played for Athens and Jones for Hartselle, but as theycame together to mark their postseason accomplishments, the twosaid it was odd not having metbeforeoff-field "I think this is the firsttime we've ever actuallymet not on a softball field," Stiles said. While it mayhavebeenthe first time for them to getacquainted on apersonal level, theywere certainly familiar with each other as rivals.
Athens and Hartselle met four times this pastpostseason, including twogamesinthe Class
6A statefinals. Eachcontestwas as wild as the previous, as the twoteams combined for92runs in those four games.
Theteams splitthe four games, butinthe end, it was Athens winning the Class6Astate championshipfor asecondtime in three years with a14-11 win in the final game
“Itwas definitelyfun,”Jones said. “Itwas agood four games, and each game it justfelt likewe werepushing each other even more. ”
“Itwas tough mentally on us I know, because we justkepttrading runs,”Stiles said. “I don’t think thatwas something you normallysee in the regionalsor the statetournament.”
Thegames brought out the bestinseveral players, and that was true forStiles and Jones Although, in reality, itwas just
another dayinthe office for the pair
Both players hadstar-studded seasons, with Stiles batting .516 with 78 runs scored, 65 RBIsand 32 stolen bases.Jones wasn’t far behind, finishing the season hitting .507with 70 runs scored, 42 RBIsand 38 stolen bases
Both stars played acrucial part in helping their teams reachthe Class6Astate finals, although eachteam took adifferent path. ForAthens, it was theGolden Eagles’ third straight appearanceinthe 6A statechampionship. However, thatdoesn’t mean this year’s success was expected. With justtwo seniors and aslewofseventh-10thgraders, Athens’ runbacktothe finals still came as unexpected and magical “Itwas themostfun I’ve ever
had,”Stiles said. “Itwas different because we werebasicallya whole newteam, but we all just became bestfriends, and making arun when no one thought we would, it was pretty special.”
On theother side, it had been five years sinceHartselle had been to the statetournament.
Despite fielding one of thebest and mosttalented teams in 6A eachofthe pasttwo seasons, theTigers had slipped up in the regional tournament.
Prior to thisseason, former playerand longtime assistant coachAnna Hall was promoted to herfirsthead coachingrole. It ended up being justthe spark theTigers needed to getbackto thestate finals.
“None of us had ever been to thestate tournament, and when CoachHallwas named our head coach, we reallywanted to get
therefor her,” Jones said.“Finally getting therewas so awesome, and it meant alot to us seniors because we felt like we left somethingfor theyounger girls to continue to strive for.” Softball in 6A ranthrough both Athensand Hartselle this season, and even though both Stiles (Mississippi State) and Jones (WallaceState) areheaded offto playatthe next level, both players think that will continue to be thecase going forward.
“It’s100% for Athens. There’s still so manyyoung players on that team, and now they have championship experience,” Stiles said Jones agreed.
“I think thefutureispretty good for Hartselle, too,”Jones said.“We have some greatyoung players as well, and Ihavealot of faith in CoachHall.”
Forthe firsttime in more than 35 years, Hartselle baseball will have anew coach. Brad Phillipswill follow in the footsteps of legendarycoachWilliam Booth.
Booth led the Hartselle program to nine state championships. He has had numerous players named All-State and go on to playcollegeball. Booth passed away May15prior to Hartselle playing in the 2024state championships.
“I am looking forwardto the challengeofattempting to follow in the footsteps of CoachBooth. He is alegend when it comes to baseball in this state and Iknow he has had an impacton so many lives and not justonthe baseball field,”Phillips said. “I know whatthis communityand program meant to him, and if Ican fill a tinyfraction of the footprint thathehas made at Hartselle then Iwill consider my soon-to-be time at Hartselle asuccess.Itisveryhumbling to think thatthe lasttime acoachwas hired to lead
the baseball programwas almostfour decades ago. That says so muchabout CoachBooth and his commitmenttoHartselle City Schools.
Phillipsalso praised athletic director Jake Miles, who had the difficult task of serving as the interim coachduring the last coupleofseasons.
“The Hartselle baseball program hasalwaysbeen in greathands, even during tough timesoftransitionthe last fewyears with CoachMiles helping with theprogram himself,” Phillips added. “I hope to playasmall part in the continuedtradition of suchastoried program. ” Phillips comes to Hartselle afterspending the pastsix years as pitching coachatthe University of South Alabama.
“Leaving the Division1 ranks wasn’tadecision that came easy,”Phillips said. “Thereissomuch to enjoyatthatlevel as a coachand being at that level for 17 years at two greatbaseball programs with Troy Universityand South Alabama.Itwasn’t easy to walkaway. However, itcan become so
time-consuming on adayto-day basis thatitcan be challengingtryingto managebothpersonal and professional obligations. Phillips is married and has twochildren whowill be entering the Hartselle
CitySchool system.
“I have twoyoung children whoare gettingto theage whereIneed to be around more,” Phillips said. “Wealso have familyinthe area, so Hartselle was agreat fit
for us because it is one of the state’selite high school programs. Iwas not going to leave for anyjob. It had to be theright one, and Hartselle CitySchools and thebaseball program checkedoff so manyboxes
for my familyand me. We arelooking forwardtothe transition, but at theend of the day, it’s thesame game at both levels. The processtoget to game day looks slightlydifferent at either level.”
