Morgan County 911 updating backup center in courthouse in case of emergency

Morgan County 911 is installing updated equipment in a backup center in the basement of the Morgan County Courthouse in case there is ever a loss of service at the main center

“Basically, we’re creating a redundancy that if something happened to this building we’d have someplace to go where we could take calls and still function,” said Morgan County 911 Director Jeanie Pharis.

The main Morgan County 911 center is located at 4216 U.S. 31 in Flint.

Jonathan Warner is the Morgan County Emergency Management Agency director and is on the

Morgan County Emergency Management Communication District board.

The EMA office is next to the backup center in the courthouse basement. Warner said there are several reasons a backup location is needed. “A tornado could come through and take their facility out. They have a generator, but let’s just say the power went out and the generator didn’t kick on or the generator wasn’t functional,” he said. “Another thing that happens, too, more than people think, is contractors will be digging or something like that and hit lines. They can take communications out.”

Pharis said the courthouse backup center has

been there for many years.

“The only time we’ve used it in the past few years is when we did a renovation on the building up here,” she said. “We utilized the backup center for some of our dispatch-

ers to function out of the backup while this operation building was being redone.”

Pharis said the process of updating the backup center has begun.

“We have been changing out our equipment and our technology,” she said. “We’d like to be able to utilize that location for some of our backup equipment.”

At Tuesday’s Morgan County Commission meeting, the commission approved a memorandum of understanding with the Morgan County Emergency Management Communication District to establish the backup 911 center

“Our citizens have to have 911,” Warner said. “They have to be able to reach

emergency responders.”

Pharis said some equipment is already set up at the backup center “We have the computer system as far as our CAD (computer-aided dispatch) which is our dispatching software. We have the ability to record calls down there, and we do have the ability to take 911 calls,” she said. “We keep it set up and live essentially to where we could just switch it over there.”

Pharis said there are 12 dispatchers at the main site, but there is only room for four dispatchers at the courthouse.

“There’s not really room to be able to expand it. Our room down there is limited,” she said. “It’s

better than nothing, very much so. ”

The state’s 911 system has very advanced technology, Pharis said.

“We actually have the ability that we could go to any other 911 center and receive our 911 calls,” she said. “And since we have computers or laptops that are portable, we could set up someplace else, as long as we could get connectivity back to our main center in some way. ”

The two centers will not necessarily be used simultaneously, Pharis said.

“Is it possible? Yes,” she said. “Is it ideal? Not right now We still have a lot more work we want to do to it.”

Woman accused of sending graphic sexual video to minor: ‘I don’t remember’

For the Enquirer

A Somerville woman accused of exchanging 5,320 images with a 14-year-old boy — along with sending a sexually explicit video of herself — over a threeweek span said she doesn’t remember it because she was drunk.

“I don’t think my side of the story is really going to change much, because people are going to see it and they’re going to think what they’re going to think, you know?” Brianna Causey, 23, said May 21.

Causey was arrested May 20 and charged with transmitting obscene material to a child, a Class B felony Records show she was released from Morgan Coun-

ty Jail the same day on a $5,000 bond. “The only thing is, like, I don’t remember any of the situation,” she said. “It was a while ago, and I was also drunk.”

According to a Morgan County Sheriff’s Office investigator affidavit filed on Tuesday, a parent or guardian of the victim told deputies on Jan. 15 that she had taken photos of Snapchat exchanges between Causey and the boy In one exchange, Causey allegedly told the boy that she wanted him to “gag her” and “grab her by the throat.”

The parent or guardian of the victim told deputies that Causey and the boy started each day with morning exchanges of “I love you,” according to the affidavit. On Jan. 22, MCSO Inves-

Cullman police joined the pursuit “due to a high rate of speed in heavy traffic areas,” according to a CPD statement.

“Officers observed him (Ivy) run multiple red lights, and the sus-

tigator Brandi Suh met with the victim and, with consent, searched his cellphone, according to the affidavit. Suh said she discovered images of Causey on the phone but nothing obscene.

A search warrant submitted to Snapchat on Jan. 25 for both the victim’s and Causey’s accounts revealed more details, including several late-night phone calls between the two ranging from five to eight hours in duration, according to the affidavit. Thirty-five calls were documented between Dec. 22 and Jan. 16. The Snapchat conversations between Causey and the victim were “very sexual in nature,” according to the affidavit.

pect later collided with an innocent third party in front of Town Square Shopping Center,” CPD said.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry on Monday sent his prayers and condolences to the Dickson family.

Call for donors:

Special to the Enquirer

The American Red Cross is urgently seeking blood and platelet donors following a significant decline in donations over the past month.

Approximately 20,000 fewer donations have been collected than needed to sustain the national blood supply.

Donors can make an appointment by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Several factors have contributed to the decline, including severe weather and record-breaking travel in May. According to the

Among other messages, Causey allegedly told the victim: “I love being choked, gagged (to an extent), ice play, being dominated; I wanna stick my tongue down your throat .” Suh applied for a search warrant for Causey’s phone on March 12, and it was granted by a Circuit Court judge. Suh’s probable cause for the warrant references a Jan. 31 interview between the victim and the Morgan County Child Advocacy Center The victim told the interviewer that he is best friends with Causey’s sister and that he began talking to Causey to make her feel better after learning she was going through a divorce, according to the search warrant affida-

ing to deal with other people’s bad decisions,” he said.

“These actions often put us in no-win situations. We do everything in our power to keep the citizens safe, but sometimes tragedy still strikes.

“Mrs. Dickson was a wonderful, sweet lady that I had an opportunity to get to know over

vit. He said the two began to talk and play video games together in November “Victim disclosed, at the end of December, they started sending pictures that they were not supposed to,” the affidavit reads. “Victim disclosed they both sent pictures to one another of themselves without clothes.”

At the time of the interview, the victim said he hadn’t spoken to Causey for three or four weeks, according to the affidavit. His parents took his phone after he told his stepmother of his interactions with Causey. Suh seized Causey’s cellphone on March 19 and had it analyzed by the Cullman Police Department, according to the affidavit. Suh said they discovered a video from Jan. 11 recorded during the same time

the years. I had spoken with her on several occasions at community meetings, as well as at KFC. Losing her is an absolute tragedy.”

John Dickson expressed gratitude for the outpouring of community support in the wake of the tragedy, according to statements shared by MCSO

Causey and the victim were communicating on Snapchat

According to the affidavit, the video shows “a pink in color sex toy” being used.

“There are tattoos visible in the recording The offender has these same tattoos in the same locations on her body.”

At a follow-up interview with the Child Advocacy Center on May 9, the victim admitted that Causey had sent images of herself using a pink vibrator, according to the affidavit.

Court records May. 22 showed no attorney has yet been retained or appointed for Causey. She told The Decatur Daily that she only sent a vibrator video to the victim on one occasion.

“There’s not more I can really say about it,” she said.

“If you will just keep my family in your thoughts and prayers,” he said. Donations to the Dickson family will help pay for funeral arrangements and assist with Alyssa Dickson’s recovery. By Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe page had raised nearly $6,000 of its $10,000 goal.

Red Cross faces critical blood shortage

Transportation Security Administration (TSA), five of the busiest travel days ever occurred this month, with more high-traffic days expected throughout the season. This busy travel period often prevents regular donors from giving blood. Additionally, as the U.S. enters what AAA terms the “100 deadliest days” of summer for auto accidents, it is crucial for hospitals to have a sufficient supply of blood products for trauma and accident victims, who may require hundreds of blood units in life-threatening situations.

Boosting the blood supply In a unique collaboration, the Red Cross has partnered

with Tetris to celebrate the iconic game’s 40th anniversary and encourage blood donations. From May 20 to June 9, 2024, donors will receive an exclusive Tetris® + Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last and be entered for a chance to win a trip to New York to meet Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Tetris.

Pajitnov, a recent firsttime blood donor, emphasizes the importance of taking action. “I think it’s very important to not just talk about people united and helping each other, but doing it with your real action, and that’s what I tried to do this time. So,

play Tetris and donate blood.”

How to donate blood

To donate, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enable the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. All blood types are needed. Donors must bring a blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of ID Eligibility criteria include being 17 years of age (16 with parental consent where allowed), weighing at least 110 pounds, and being in generally good health. High school students and other donors aged 18 and

younger must meet certain height and weight requirements.

Donors can expedite their donation process by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading

and health history questionnaire online on the day of their donation. Instructions are available at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or on the Blood Donor App.

Pair accused of stealing from Hartselle Walmart 14 times

An Andalusia man accused of cooperating with a woman to steal from the Hartselle Walmart 14 times between March and May was arrested Tuesday, according to a Hartselle police affidavit.

Dakota Ty Anderson, 25, is charged with organized retail theft and was released early Wednesday from the Morgan County Jail on a $5,000 bond, jail records show

“Anderson entered the Hartselle Walmart and used barcodes for cheaper items to scan in place of more

expensive items with the aid of a female subject for a total of $1,004.97 in fourteen different thefts between March 14 and May 11,” reads the affidavit signed Tuesday by an investigator Court and jail records

showed no charges yet filed against the woman accused in the affidavit of assisting Anderson and using her credit card to pay for the false totals at self-checkout kiosks. Hartselle police met with a Walmart loss preven-

tion associate at the business, located at 1201 U.S. 31 S.W., on May 20. The store turned over documentation and surveillance footage to investigators, according to the affidavit.

Investigators said Anderson’s white truck was seen entering Walmart’s parking lot before nearly every theft, and he and the woman were identified by Walmart staff in two separate photo lineups. The state Legislature last year implemented tougher penalties for stealing from retailers Organized retail theft is a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Somerville man accused of fleeing holiday checkpoint

A Somerville man spent three days in jail after he allegedly fled from a Morgan County Sheriff’s Office safety checkpoint May 26. Fred Walton Carter, 55, had active warrants for thirddegree theft and possessing a forged instrument when he approached deputies in his Ford F-150 at around 11:30 p.m. May 26, according to a deputy’s affidavit. Carter drove up to the

checkpoint at a steady, slow speed before he accelerated away and ignored commands to stop, according to the affidavit. Deputies then chased Carter westbound on East Upper River Road until he pulled into the parking lot of a local business and put his truck in park.

“All deputies drew their firearms and stayed at the low-ready position,” the affidavit reads. “Commands were then given for the driver to exit the truck and face away from deputies; the

driver complied and did as ordered.” Carter and his female passenger were detained and brought to the rear of the truck while deputies ran their information through dispatch, according to the affidavit. Carter’s name was flagged as having active felony warrants. Court records show Carter allegedly cosigned the back of a check made payable to another man for $8,600

and deposited it into his Redstone Federal Credit Union account in April 2023. Carter “completed an ATM withdrawal immediately after depositing the check, as well as several Cash App transfers,” according to a Decatur police detective’s affidavit. “The check was later returned as having been a forgery.” Carter allegedly told a

RFCU representative that he would pay the money back within a week; however, according to the affidavit, he instead abandoned the account with an “excessive negative balance. Carter was ultimately charged with stealing $725.57 and third-degree possessing a forged instrument, both Class D felonies Court records show the arrest warrants were served after he was booked into the Morgan County Jail at around 3 a.m. Monday.

When deputies asked Carter why he ran from the checkpoint, he told them he was aware of his warrants “but made a stupid decision,” according to the affidavit. His passenger was allowed to drive his truck from the scene as Carter was transported to jail. Carter was additionally charged with misdemeanor attempt to elude with a total bond of $2,300, according to court records. Jail records show he was released May 29

Livingbyfaith in Jesus above, trusting and confiding in Hisgreat love. These words mark the beginningofone of the most frequently sung worship songs in churches today, aptlynamed “Living by Faith.”This song encapsulates how Christians are called to live. It’s achallenging path, relyingonbeliefwithout always knowingwhatlies ahead. Yet, thisfaith also provides asteadfast assuranceoftruth.Despiteits difficulty, thereare valuable lessons to be learned aboutlivingbyfaith Matthew14tells thestoryofPeter walkingonwater to meetJesus. This narrative highlightskey aspects of faith.First, faith empowers achild of Godtoface the unknown. Peter stepped outonto the water, uncertain of whatwould happen, but confident as long as Jesus was there. That is true faith

Second, the storyillustrates thatGod’sarmsare always theretoliftusupwhenwefalter. When Peter began to sink, Jesusremarkedonhis lackof faith.Instead of succumbing to thewaves,Peter reachedout to Jesus, whose strength and presencesaved him. Lastly, the storyteaches us how to livebyfaith daily. Peter walked on water as long as he kept hiseyes on Jesus. Themoment he focused on thestorm instead, he began to sink. His salvation camewhenherefocusedonJesus, wholifted himup. This demonstrates that living by faith requires keeping our eyes on Jesuseveryday. Our faith and attentionmustbefixed on Him continuously Howare you living? By faith?Let’skeep our eyes on Jesusand live by faith each day.

Anderson play basketball at the Priceville Event Center recently. The Event Center, built one year ago, has only one basketball court —also used forpickleball, volleyball, graduations and other events —but officials hope to expand the facility to add more courts.

tipurpose room became home tothe NewSouth Wrestling event afew weeks ago, Phillips said. “Itwent reallywell.”

Another similar event is planned for October, she said.

Thefacilityisalso used for manyrecurring events and meetings, likethe networking groups thatmeetanywhere fromweeklytomonthly.

“Weessentially have three different levels of conference rooms or meeting space, ” Phillips said. Thecorporate conferenceroomhas held as fewaseight people and has asmartboard, video-call technology, leather chairs, and tables. Themultipurpose room is by far the most-used room.

“Wehavebaby showers, wedding showers, corporate lunch-and-learn events, tons of different things —it’sdefinitelymultiuse,”she said.

Thegoal of the event center staffistoform relationships with the people who use the facility. This is adirective fromthe mayor,Phillips said.

“When Sam(Heflin) hired us, he told us he wantedus tobethe Chick-fil-Aofrecreation centers,”she said with a laugh, explaininghewanted the stafftobe friendly and helpful and form relationships with users rather than displaytake-it-or-leave-itattitudes.

“Wetry to go withthe flow of whatthe communityisasking for and to be responsive tothat,”said April Maples, who was justmade assistant director of operations under Phillips.

One feature thatMaples said is growing in popularity is the exercise gym. Available

through membershipfrom 4a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, the gymcosts $20 per monthfor individuals, $30for couples and$50 forfamilies, she said Thereisalso a$15 discounted membership forseniors 65 and over, military, firstresponders, teachers and students, Maples said.

Theexercise gymoffers standing andsittingellipticals, stair climbers, inclining treadmills, matrix resistance strengthening equipment, recumbentbikes,a tire-flip machine, rowing machine and other equipment, Maples said. These machinesoffer interactive technology, so theycan be used withsmart phonesand watches. The gymalso offers health care provider programs likeSilver Sneakers andPrime Renew Active, she said.Inthe future CityCouncilmanMelvin DuranIII said he would like to see twoorthree morebasketballcourtsadded to the eventcenter because “there aresomanyother sports those courts canbeusedfor in addition to basketball, including volleyball and pickleball.”

Whetheradditional basketballcourtswould beadded to the existing event center or whether they would be included in aseparatebuildingnearthe eventcenter would still have tobe determined, themayor said.

Duran wouldalsoliketosee an indoor practice facilityfor offseason sports including football, basketball and soccer. One feature he especially likes is the indoor walking trackbecause the entirecommunity can use itfor free.

He creditedthe previous council and mayor withstartingthe eventcenter plan.

“Theyhad the vision before

we came about, and we made afew changes and gotitgoing and followed through with whatwecould do andafford, he said. “Itwas ateam effort.

CityCouncilman Patrick Dean would like to see a separatebuilding built beside the existing recreationcenter because thereiscurrently onlyone basketballcourt

He said additional basketball courtspacewould in turn translate into more volleyball courts and pickleball courts “Pickleball is ahugesuccess in the building right now,” Dean said. “Right now, during theweek, theladies the waytheyhaveitscheduled is it’s 50-50, half pickleball and half basketball throughoutthe entireweek. And volleyball. We’vegot volleyball thrown in the mix, too.”

Dean said the original plans called for athree-orfourcourtbuilding but financial constraints whittled that to one.

“Weown theproperty right besidethe event center and everything towardthe interstate right there,so we’vegot room to expand whenever we wantto,” he said. “I’ve talkedwith the mayor beforeabout it and we wouldn’t want to add onto thatbuilding, we would liketobuild adifferent buildingand maybe makelikealittle garden breezewayorsomething between thetwo buildings. Maybeput some picnic tables and stufflikethatfor people to enjoy.”

He said thecitywould not move to expandwithout firstgetting feedbackfrom the public Moneyisthe chiefobstacleatthis point to growing the eventcenter, officials said.

Hanlinesiblings coaching Danville

For the Enquirer

Soccerhas profoundly shaped the lives of siblingsKelsieand Justin Hanline. From childhood backyardgames to standout varsitycareers, their journeyhas now come full circleastheycollaborateashead coachesattheir former high school.

Although Kelsie, a2017Danville graduate, is five years older than brother Justin, who completed his Danville High School career in 2022, theyquickly bonded through soccer.

Kelsie started playing soccer at age7,and even at 2years old, Justin followed her into the sport.

“Healwayswanted to do what his sister did, so he liked following in her footsteps and was always outside with her playing and practicing,”said KayHanline, the pair’s mother

Their passion for soccergrew fromthere.

“They’dgooutside and practice on their own,”Kay said. “My husband (Mike) setupasoccer field in the backyard. He would even paint the lines sometimes for them to have an actual field toplayon. They’d bring their friends out hereand have alittle pickupgame in the backyard all the time. They still do that today.”

“Wehavespent so manyyears of our life playing soccer,”Kelsie said.“When we weren’t playing for our teams, we wereathome practicing with oneanother. It’s always been competitive, which Ifeel is whywebecame the players we are. ” At Danville High, both played varsitysoccerfromseventh through 12th grade.

Kelsie setthe school record for goals scored in aseason as ajunior (44) and senior (48). Thetotals led both girls and boys programs. That record

stood until 2024, whenfreshman LaylaSherrill shattered the markwith 84 goals, thirdall time in the statefor goals in a season.

Thegirls team achieved the school’sfirst soccerplayoff appearancein2017, hersenior year

“Itwas ayear to remember for sure,”Kelsie said.

Despite receiving scholarship offers to furtherher career in college,Kelsie joined the Danville boys coaching staffasan assistant under then-coach BrandySutton.

“Itwas weirdthatalot of the team was filledwith friendsof mine justayear younger than me,”Kelsie recalled. “Respect was never reallyanissue even though Iwas young because they all knewhow Iplayed.

Justin was asophomoreonthe 2018 team. Kelsie assistedwith the boys team from then through his senior seasonin2022. She was named head coachofthe girls team in 2021.

“I received aphone callfrom the principal asking if Iwould be willing to step up as the head coachofthe girlsvarsityteam,” Kelsie said.“Iwas hesitant at firstbecauseI knewIstill wanted to continuehelpingcoachthe boys team, and Iknewitwould be hard to balanceboth.Istarted thinking about howbad of luck the girls have had the seasons beforenot winning manygames and going home with their heads downafter being beaten badly game after game. Iknewhow thatfelt, because thatiswhatI went through during my years of playing varsity, too. Iwanted to help changethat, soIaccepted the job and we madeittothe playoffs that firstyear.”

Kelsie’s balancing actproved to be successfulin 2021 and2022. Notonlydid thegirls reachthe playoffs eachyear, but she also

contributed to theboyspostseason appearances in eachseason

After Justin graduated, Kelsie coached the girls exclusively in 2023 and 2024and extended the team’s playoff streak to fourstraight seasonssince she became the head coach.

“Thishas probably been my favorite season I’ve had with the varsitygirl’steam yet,”Kelsie saidfollowing a19-4-2 season thatincluded aClass1A-3A Area 7championshipand endedwith afirst-round 4-3playoff lossat home to Madison Academy. “We unfortunately fell shortduring our playoff game, but after having theseason we have had,I couldn’tbetoo upset. Kelsiecredited her brother for hissupportinthatsuccess “We’re agood team on and offthe field,”she said.“Ihave asked Justin many times this year to standbeside me for some of my games to help coach. My assistantcoachput him on the roster for ourplayoff game. We always do good beside eachother because we areconstantlytalking aboutthe game andtalkingwith theplayers nonstop. Iwould say we areboth veryknowledgeable with the game itself, soit’ssuper beneficial getting to standbeside oneanotherfor big games like that. He was alot of help during my warmups this season as well. He always volunteered to warm up my keeper while Ifocusedon the rest of the team. Iappreciate all thathedoes, andI knowhe will continue to grow as acoach.

I’mdefinitely aproud big sister.”

Justin traveled asimilar path to coaching as hissister.Team captainfor all sixyears with Danville, he also endured brutal losing seasons beforeleadingthe Hawks to the playoffshis junior and senior years. He capped his varsitycareer with 31 goals and 17 assistsasasenior, and was named to theSuper All-State Boys second team, Class1A-3A

Boys All-Statefirstteam and DecaturDaily Boys soccerPlayer of the Year

Sutton coached Justin from the eighth through 12th grade.

“His eighth-grade year, we would get10-0 mercy ruled all the time,”Sutton said. “By10th grade, we had asolid foundation.

After graduating, he passed on offers to playcollegesoccerand volunteered withthe Danville boys andgirls teams in 2023.

“I had severaloffers to playsoccerincollegealthough Ididn’t feel as anyofthem wereagood fitfor me,”Justin said. “I knewI wanted soccerinmylife in some form. So lastyear Ivolunteered to help with both the Danville guys andgirls team.

After Sutton decided to step down from coaching, Justin applied for the job.

“Thisyear when the head coaching spot opened, Iknew Iwanted to step up for that position,”Justin said. “Withthe position being at the school and in the communityIlived in my whole life, Iknewitwas the icing on the cake. Ialso want to pursue coaching at the next level, so Ifelt likethis would be the perfectstartand experience I need for that.”

Theteamheinherited resembled hiseighth-grade team more than the onethatfinished 12-4 hissenior season. Only five players remained from the2022 group.

“Welost22seniors in the past twoyears,”Suttonsaid.

TheHawks finished with two wins in 2024, but Justin sawsignificant growth from his young team.

“During this season,Ihave seen moreaccountabilityand team supportthan Iever have,” he said. “BeforeI could even point out whatwent wrong during agame, Iwould have players speak up and saywhatthey

could have done better on. If aplayer has abad game, it’s always his teammate who lifts him up and encourages him not to beat himselfupaboutit. Also when they give eachother criticism, it’s moreconstructive than negative. We always sayfamily during theteam huddle after the game, because win or lose we do it as ateam and as afamily. Justin further reflected on his firstseason as ahead coachas he looked forwardtobuilding on its lessons.

“Wehad atoughseason,”he acknowledged. “I learned that sometimes progress can be slow Ifeel likeaslong as we continue to progress as ateam and strive to do better, wewill continue to grow.Throughhardworkand dedication my team will only getbetter from here. As far as coachingIdolove it and Ihope to continue to helpthis team and program grow.”

Same as she did during Justin’s playing career,Kelsie helped her brother navigatehis firstcoaching season “Mymentor is my sister,” Justin said. “I’vealwaysrespected her playstyle and the wayshe coaches. I’ve always looked up to her as aplayer, and Ialso love the wayshe took alosing team to ateam thatmakes playoffs everyyear. It’sverybeneficial being able to coachalongside her. Shehas taught me how to usemyplayer mindset to workitintobeagood coach. It’s also veryeasy to reachout to her at anytime if there’sany issues, due to us being siblings. Iknow if there’sanything we need to workon, Iknow we will be straight forwardwith each other.Ithinkit’scool thatwe gettoshareour love for soccer on the same field thatweboth shined on as players, and now we’recoaches trying to helpothers be theones to shine.”
