YOU ARE A GIFT

Local foundation aims to end prescription drug addiction 574538-1

STORY BY LAUREN LEE PHOTOS BY JODI HYDE

I

In the aftermath of tragedy, Hartselle’s John Bentley followed the mission placed on his heart to help mothers overcome prescription drug addiction. Having lost his daughter Natalie to complications from a prescription drug addiction on December 11, 2010, Bentley knew he wanted to help change the narrative for other mothers – eventually creating the You are a GIFT Foundation in October 2021. A few months after his daughter Natalie passed away shortly before her 29th birthday, leaving behind her 4-yearold son, Bentley said the word “gift” was laid on his heart while scrolling through her Facebook page. Beyond the literal meaning, the word was to be especially impactful on Bentley’s own journey through grief and finding contentment while also being a catalyst for change in North Alabama. “Probably a couple of months later God put the word gift upon my heart and that stands for God’s image fulfilled talent. So, you are a gift made in God’s image, made to fulfill your talent in service to others,” Bentley said. The revelation that would eventually lead to the creation of the You are a GIFT Foundation and alter Bentley’s perspective would come from an unlikely source – social media. “Why that stood out to me was a couple of weeks after her funeral, I viewed her Facebook page and there were approximately 60 people who had posted what Natalie had done for them. And she had the gift for being able to sit

What is an

Ultrasound?

– John Bentley

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body to determine your overall health. It does not use radiation and it provides clear pictures of soft tissues that don’t show up well on X-rays. Ultrasounds are used to examine the body’s internal organs, such as:

• blood vessels • ovaries • liver • testicles

• kidneys • pancreas • bladder • and more

We can often accommodate same-day exams and flexible scheduled appointments at any of our four locations. Our costs are substantially lower than the same exam performed at a local hospital. We believe that offering value, without compromise, is the right thing to do.

with you and really let you know that you had value and that you were loved even though she didn’t always see that in herself,” Bentley said. According to Bentley Natalie, or “Tigee” as she was affectionately known by her family, would often help others – clleaning their homes, watching their children, purchasing groceries, all without expecting anything in return. After reading through dozens of accounts of these types of giving and services to others, Bentley began to view his late daughter through a new lens. “Even in her darkest hours she would use her God-given talent to serve others. Those are the things that I choose to hold onto and also encourage other parents that have lost their child to find. You are going to grieve and that’s okay to grieve, but celebrate your child’s life whether they were adults or not an adult. For some that may be difficult to look at. It was obvious to me, but what wasn’t obvious through God giving me the word gift and putting it on my heart, was that I missed out on that gift. I was blind to it. That was another thing I encourage parents to do today, is to really plug into your child’s gifts and celebrate it. And help amplify it,” Bentley said. Though his daughter is gone, Natalie’s gift continues to make an impact in North Alabama through the You are a GIFT Foundation. Supporting faith-based rehabilitation facilities and education about the epidemic of prescription drug use in the state of Alabama, the foundation has a mission of eradicating prescription drug addiction among mothers. “We are small and we are keeping it small at this point until God leads us elsewhere. We primarily focus on local and regional faith-based inpatient centers. Because what we have found is that 90% of the mothers that have completed a faith-based program successfully, don’t return to drugs, don’t return to their addiction.

There’s some data out there about moms and addiction and quite a lot of data on expecting moms and addiction. Some of the things that stand out to me is that mothers are more easily addicted to pain medicines or women are more than men. Even the pandemic itself brought on an 18% increase in overdose,” Bentley said. According to data by the Centers for Disease Control, the average annual rate of opioid prescriptions in Morgan County from 2006 - 2020 was 136.1 per 100 residents. This alarming statistic coincides with other data showing that the state of Alabama ranks highest in the nation as having more opioid prescriptions than people. Bentley says the crisis can be especially dangerous to mothers as they face the strains of motherhood, careers and maintaining a household. “Being a mom is one of the most gratifying and amazing things, but it comes with a great deal of pressure. And the pressure can manifest itself in a lot of different ways whether it’s physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. And in a bid to do the right thing and receive assistance, this can result in an over reliance on prescription drugs,” Bentley said. Through special events, speaking engagements and book sales, Bentley and his board of directors fundraise toward their goal of education around prescription drugs addiction and scholarships for mothers entering a faith-based rehabilitation facility. To date the foundation has been able to contribute $6,500 towards their mission with goals of contributing another $6,500 this year. Speaking engagements and donations can be booked at the foundations website by visiting youareagift.foundation.

sights g

For mothers facing prescription drug addiction, Bentley encourages them to take that next step toward activating their gift, and to reclaim their lives. “The difficult part for them is being able to look at themselves and recognize the value they have. This is a situation they are in and it’s not where they want to be and there’s probably a lot of shame and guilt. In this moment make a choice for you and don’t think about what you have lose or might lose but make a choice for you and find a faith-based program that’s going to give you the skills to go back and become the mother you wanted to be and to live the life you are proud of to then use your testimony to serve others in your position,” Bentley said.

LATE-BLOOMING LOVE Hartselle couple marry after four decades of friendship STORY BY REBEKAH YANCEY PHOTOS BY RACHEL HOWARD

I

In a world where love often blooms early, Judy and Wayne Young prove that sometimes the sweetest romances come later in life. Their story, a testament to the power of love’s unexpected twists, weaves together the threads of two lives marked by loss, resilience and ultimately, a deep and enduring affection. Judy Young, nee, Owens, first crossed paths with her now husband and his family nearly four decades ago. Through the years, she had the privilege of working for him and his late wife, during which she grew to admire Wayne not only for his character but also for his compassionate dealings with clients. They both had experienced decades-long marriages, only to face the cruel hand of fate when they lost their respective spouses. Judy’s husband passed away in 2019, while Wayne became a widower in 2021. Both were adamant about never venturing into another relationship, let alone contemplating marriage.

Wayne, a man known more for insurance paperwork than poetic proclamations, was Judy’s insurance agent. She said she never expected to encounter him in any other context except for discussions about premiums and coverage. It was a twist of fate that brought them closer. When Judy’s daughter received a grim diagnosis of stage-four ovarian cancer, she reached out to Wayne through his secretary, asking him to pray for her daughter. Wayne began calling Judy every couple of months to inquire about her daughter’s condition. These were never personal conversations; their exchanges remained confined to the status of insurance. That was until late July 2022. In an unexpected twist, Wayne reached out to Judy about her daughter and expressed a desire to connect on a personal level. Judy, ever open to the prospect of support, welcomed the idea. Their first phone call led to conversations that stretched for hours, night after night. They even ventured into the outside world, going out for a meal. At the outset, they were adamant that their connection would remain a friendship devoid of romantic intentions. That resolve held strong for two weeks. Judy soon realized that her heart was entangled with Wayne’s, though she remained reticent about revealing her feelings. She yearned for him to make the first move and didn’t want to influence his emotions. Little did she know Wayne was wrestling with similar sentiments. Unbeknownst to one another, they each turned to a higher power for guidance, praying for a sign that their budding affection was in accordance with divine will.

Many of life’s important events require some degree of advance planning and consideration; these events usually impact us as well as our families. End-of-life and funeral planning should be no different.

Why should funeral planning be any different?

Sorting out the arrangements while you’re still around means you get the funeral you’d like. Most importantly, your loved ones are spared the additional distress of organizing and paying for it.

• Pre-arranged planning • Cremation urns and keepsakes • Full range of burial • Serving all religions & cremation options • Bereavement programs while supporting and acknowledging all • Caskets, vaults beliefs and monuments

EMERGENCY EMERGEN NCY EMERGENCY VETERINARY SERVICES Weeks later, Wayne broke the ice by leaning in for a kiss and confessing his love for Judy. Their conversations shifted from friendship to marriage, and the universe seemed to conspire in their favor. The Lord, they believed, granted them assurance that their union was in accordance with His will. In a whirlwind four months from their first date, they were wed, opting for a church wedding to cement their commitment. “I decided after our first long phone call that I should let my daughters know that Wayne and I were starting to talk on a friendly basis,” she said. “My older daughter, Heather Edgecombe, hung up from talking with me and told her husband, ‘Mom’s going to marry Wayne Young,’ and she immediately started to look for a dress to wear to the wedding.” Tragically, Heather was unable to attend the wedding as her cancer had worsened. She passed away Sept. 15, 2023. Their love story, born in the crucible of life’s challenges and illuminated by their faith, stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, even when it arrives later in life. “We were both wondering why things moved so quickly; but now we see the Lord’s hand in providing for my help and comfort during the death of my daughter,” Judy said.

When Sheri and Scott Adners’ children were preparing to leave the Chicago, Ill. area for college in the Southeast, the Adners knew they wanted to find somewhere between Mississippi and North Carolina to call home. They had been working corporate jobs for more than thirty years but knew when they made their move they wanted to take the opportunity to pursue a dream they had both had for a long time of opening a restaurant. “The bank Sheri was working at decided to outsource her department overseas,” Scott said. “A few months later COVID hit. Once this happened we decided that maybe now was the time to begin looking into our dream of opening a restaurant.” Scott had spent some time in his younger years as a cook in a few different restaurants and really enjoyed the work, and Sheri enjoys baking and cooking. Once the Adners had made the decision to move, they began the search for a restaurant that would be a good fit for them, searching all over the Tennessee Valley for an existing establishment they could purchase. Initially they found a place in Huntsville that

piqued their interest, but it ultimately was not an opportunity they wanted to pursue. Having passed on the first opportunity, their realtor mentioned there was a place in Hartselle that had not been listed yet but that would soon be on the market. “The realtor told us about Cahoots so we came and looked at it and bought it before they even had a chance to list it,” Sheri said. “We renamed it Eatin’ in the Attic because we both just felt that it was an appropriate name for the restaurant as once you walk into the restaurant it is as if you have stepped into the attic of a very old house. You are eating amongst all kinds of antiques, oddities and memorabilia. It’s like taking a walk down memory lane.” The Adners have changed more than just the name of the restaurant, expanded both the menu options and hours of operation, opening up evening hours Thursday through Saturday and also added several child-friendly options to the menu. Additionally, they have added a candy store and a full service bar. “We were looking at what was missing in Hartselle and didn’t see a candy shop, so we added that to the front of the restaurant. We just want to make that bigger and reality focus on the old kind of candy. If you can go to a big box store and buy it you’re most likely not going to find it here.” SInce opening, the couple have partnered with the Hartselle Merchants Association, the Downtown Business League and their neighbors to grow downtown Hartselle. “It’s a beautiful historic district that needs to be shared with the community,” Scott Adner said. “We recently worked in conjunction with Red Ribbon Decor to provide Lunch with the Grinch before they offered pictures with the Grinch.” The Adners also plan 24 Hartselle Living

WEDDINGS

MEET EIGHT LOCAL COUPLES PHOTO BY LAUREN COFFEY PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW YOU MET: We met at the end of our junior year of high school and have been inseparable since. I graduated from Hartselle High School and Will from Decatur High School; however, we survived the rivalry and have been together for almost eight years now. THE PROPOSAL: Will had just been accepted to medical school at the University of South Alabama and his family wanted to celebrate by going out to a nice dinner in Birmingham – or at least I thought! I drove down to his apartment in Birmingham and hopped in his car to ride with him to dinner. On the way, his mom called to tell us they had to delay the reservation because his family was running late. Will said, “We haven’t been to the Vulcan in a while, let’s kill some time,” and veered off to the iconic Birmingham landmark. This place was super special to us as we both attended college in Birmingham at Samford University and Birmingham-Southern College. We walked down to a photographer and beautiful set-up for the proposal.

THE WEDDING DRESS: Ever since I was a little girl, I remember driving by the gorgeous wedding dresses in the window at The Something Blue Shoppe in downtown Hartselle with my mom, often pulling off into a parking spot to admire the displays. I knew immediately after our engagement where I would “say yes to the dress.” I wanted the dress to be timeless, with delicate sleeves, a ballgown silhouette, and a cathedral length veil. I scheduled a private appointment and invited all the women on both sides of our family. It was so special to have found the one with our biggest supporters. FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY: Our wedding ceremony was everything we could have hoped for at my childhood church in Hartselle. The church sanctuary was adorned with gorgeous Christmas décor, and we sang our favorite hymns. It was even cold outside! At the reception, we had a special visitor from the North Pole visit and take pictures with our guests. To end the night, Santa drove us away in a shiny red convertible! HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? We met when I began visiting and later became a member at the same church he and his family attended. But the more fun answer is, he dated my best friend his freshman year of high school. It was however on a Monday evening at a church devotional in February 2021 that our story officially began. We grew a friendship over the next few months, had a few setbacks, but eventually realized that there was something undeniable there and started dating a little less than a year later. We’d been dancing around each other in the same friend group for years, but after we started dating, we knew very early on that we would get married one day. THE PROPOSAL: He proposed in my back yard on December 17, 2022 with a cookie cake that said “Please Say Yes!” mirroring him asking me to be his girlfriend with a cookie cake a year prior. Both our families were there, and his mom took pictures. It was just perfect! FAVORITE WEDDING MOMENTS: Tt would have to be seeing each other the first time as I came down the aisle. We both shed a few tears. It was a truly special moment! Next would be the photos captured by stepping outside in the Spring sunshine and taking some photos surrounded by nature. HOW YOU MET: We met while working at Space Mountain at Walt Disney World during a shift during Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. Our cake is actually shaped like Space Mountain. We became best friends and have been together ever since. Our entire wedding had so many Disney touches because it is still a place we love to visit. THE WEDDING DRESS: My sister, mom, best friend Chanler Cantor and mother-in-law shopped with me, and we finally found my dress at Minerva’s Bridal in Orlando. The dress is made by Allure Bridals. FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY: Our favorite moment was reading our vows to each other. We decided to read our vows to each other during our first look. We wanted to keep it special and just between us. FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS: I picked different colors for each of my bridesmaids to wear that complimented each one. Our wedding was colorful and filled with Disney touches. We used a lot of emerald green since my engagement ring is an emerald. Hartselle Living 33

HOW YOU MET: We met during college at Mississippi State University our freshman year. We were set up by our friends in Greek life who were dating. The story I like to tell is he had to bleach his hair for pledge-ship, and unfortunately the same week he had an event to go to. So, my sorority sister told him she knew someone who could “do hair” and had me come dye his hair back brown for his upcoming event. It was definitely an interesting way to be introduced to someone! After that we went to a few functions together, and that was that! THE PROPOSAL: He proposed Dec 12, 2021, at my family’s lake house on Smith Lake. It was right after my graduation, and all our loved ones were there to celebrate with us. It was such a perfect sentimental Christmas proposal! THE WEDDING DRESS: My dress was from Birch On Main located in Huntsville. I’ve dreamed about this specific dress for years and was over the moon that they had a designer who made it. Also, this designer was located in Jackson, Miss. which is right around where Will grew up! WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW: We are currently living in Madison. I’m a Software Engineer at Dynetics and he’s a designer at Matheny Goldmon Architects and Interiors. Hartselle Living 35

THE WEDDING DRESS: Onda dress by NeWhite Bridal, purchased at Belle Bridal Atelier in Wicker Park, Chicago Ill.

THE PROPOSAL: Ethan proposed at Huntsville Botanical Gardens. He completely surprised me. He had our friend, Tucker King, secretly photograph the proposal. Afterwards, we met our families for dinner to celebrate all together.

THE WEDDING DRESS: I found my dress at the Something Blue Shoppe in Hartselle. They were so helpful and made the process a breeze. I knew I wanted something classic and simple, and found my perfect dress. FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY: Our favorite moment was the ceremony. It felt so special to be surrounded by our family and closest friends as we entered this new phase together. FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS: I collect vintage teacups and wanted to use china I collected at the reception. It was an eclectic mix of patterns and colors. My mom, mother-in-law and I had so much fun searching for china prior to the wedding. Hartselle is our hometown, so it was important for us to support local Hartselle businesses. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW? We live in Memphis, Tenn. Ethan is a software engineer and I am a cardiovascular perfusionist. We are enjoying making our new city home. Hartselle Living 39

THE PROPOSAL: Joe planned on proposing to me on Thanksgiving Day with my close family there. However, he and my father were cooking the turkey and the smoker stopped working. They ended up taking about 30 minutes longer than planned to finish cooking, so by the time it was done almost all our friends and family were at the house. He ended up proposing to me in front of most of my family and friends. THE WEDDING DRESS: My dress was perfect! It was simple and classic and fit my personality to a “T.” I knew it was the one the second I saw it. That thought was solidified when my mom and I both teared up when she saw it on. FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS: Some of my favorite details from the wedding were the decorations at the wedding. My mom and sister pretty much came up with the ideas for decorations and everything was so beautiful and unique. From the antique mirrors to the mismatched plates to the photos of all of our loved ones as you walked in, it was unforgettable. Hartselle Living 41

Hannah + Dustin NOVEMBER 4, 2023 PHOTOS BY BLAIRE WOODALL PHOTOGRAPHY

HOW YOU MET: Hannah and Dustin have a mutual friend Cheyenne Crowe. Dustin had messaged Cheyenne asking for Hannah’s number. After a little persuasion Hannah decided to give Dustin a chance. Dustin reached out to Hannah by text while he was home from Auburn picking cotton on his family farm. Hannah was camping with family when she received the text. Dustin and Hannah text and snapchatted for about a week because he was in Auburn at school, and she was here in Hartselle. He came home for Thanksgiving break and invited her to his brother’s basketball game in Danville. Being the gentleman he is, he drove to Hartselle to pick her up and meet her mom and dad. Then they went to Danville to the basketball game, and she of course got to meet all of his family. They hit it off from the start. THE PROPOSAL: We had talked about marriage and looked at rings, but it was all a surprise. Dustin wanted to show Hannah the spot of land where they had talked about building their future home. Dustin was rushing around to go before the rain. When the couple arrived at the spot of land and walked over it, Dustin pointed out where everything would go. The grass was knee high so that Hannah was more worried about stepping on something. When they started back to the truck due to the incoming rain Dustin was on one knee and asked Hannah to marry him. FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS: Hannah said her favorite details were going shopping with her mom, sister, niece and Dustin’s mom to find her dress. Hartselle Living 43

“REFUGEE”

By Alan Gratz

From popular Juvenile Historical Fiction author Alan Gratz comes a book about three different children who are fleeing oppressive countries. In 1938, Josef is a German Jew fighting to escape the expanding control of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party. In 1994, Isabel is trying to use a makeshift raft to escape the dictatorship of Fidel Castro in Cuba. In 2015, Mahmoud and his family are making their way to Germany from Syria because of the Syrian Civil War. The journeys these children take make them see the world; the good and bad.

“EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE: A STORY OF BOOKS AND BELONGING” By Pauline David-Sax Illustrator: Charnelle Pinkney Barlow

Nicky always feels at home in her school library. Instead of attending recess, she spends her time assisting Ms. Gillam with reshelving library books. Interacting with her classmates on the playground is not something she enjoys. However, when Ms. Gilliam goes to a conference for a week, she must attend recess with all the other children. All alone reading poetry, Nicky is approached by a classmate who informs her that she also loves reading poetry. The dynamic and multidimensional artwork pairs well with the written in verse story of Nicky learning she might encounter things she doesn’t expect outside her world of books. Early and middle elementary students struggling to branch out socially will find this written verse picture book comforting. Also, the inclusion of the Dewey Decimal system categories within the text provides readers with the opportunity to learn more about library nonfiction classification in a unique and memorable way.

“THE LAST CUENTISTA” By Donna Barba Higuera

Petra Pena just wants to be a storyteller like her beloved Abuelita. However, the world is about to end because Hailey’s Comet was knocked off course. Since becoming aware of the Earth’s impending doom, humans have created ships that will transport them to another planet that is similar enough to Earth for humans to survive. It will just take over 300 years to get there. Petra’s family is chosen to be one of the very few families who will be put in stasis for the 300 years to rebuild Earth on the new planet. But trouble is lurking. A secret faction infiltrated the spaceships command and are determined to not remake the Earth. They want to make a utopia where everyone is the same. It’s up to Petra alone to stop them.

However, his parents decide it’s time for him to start going to private school in a different borough of New York City. At this new school, Jordon is treated as an outsider because he is the new kid and is part of the majority. Throughout the school year, Jordan takes his feelings and issues and puts them into his sketchbook. 46 Hartselle Living
