Veterans Day parade returns Saturday By Rebekah Yancey rebekah.yancey@hartselleenquirer.com The 13th annual Veterans Day Parade is set to return Saturday to downtown Hartselle. A patriotic program honoring military veterans will kick off at 10 a.m. in front of the historic depot, followed by the parade at 11 a.m. Lee Y. Greene, Jr. the parade organizer, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support in embracing this annual event as a new town tradition. He recount-

ed the parade’s origins, which began 13 years ago on Veterans Day after the airing of a PBS series about the Vietnam War. Greene, along with Robert Dotson and Cleo Stubbs, initiated the parade. During a conversation with the two veterans, they shared stories of being mistreated upon their return home, leading to their decision to ensure Hartselle would never let another Veterans Day pass without a parade to express gratitude to all veterans and welcome them home. Over time, the City of Hartselle offi-

cially recognized the parade as a city event, ensuring its continuity. Their objective was to keep the event free for all. Since its modest beginnings, the parade has expanded to feature 6-8 floats, numerous antique cars and trucks, high school bands, and various local scouting groups, according to Greene. Col. James Henderson, Retired Army Colonel, Vietnam veteran, chaplain of several local groups and manager of WYZK FM 98.3, will deliver a speech during the patriotic program. The Veterans Parade

program not only welcomes veterans home but also encourages the participation of various groups, including the HHS Civil Air Patrol and the Decatur ROTC units, who partake in combined marches. Through the years, it has become a selfsustaining event, though it still requires effort for permitting and spreading the word. The parade will commence on Railroad Street and proceed along Main Street. For more details, contact Lee Y. Greene at 256773-2304.

David Vest, a composer and producer, has worked with Grammy Award winners, on commercials, animated series and films, from his Priceville studio E320.

By Catherine Godbey For the Enquirer Framed photographs of Grammy Award winners and platinum record holders fill the bathroom in David Vest’s Priceville studio. The photographs represent a small portion of the artists and musicians the multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer has worked with the past three decades. “I feel so blessed to do this for a living. I don’t take a single second of it for granted. There are times I sit and look at who I’m playing behind or sitting beside in the studio and think, ‘I don’t even know how I got here.’ But I know God orchestrated it,” the 54-year-old Vest said. During his career, Vest has worked with Grammy Award winners Bob Carlisle, Randy Thomas and Tom Hemby, actress Lindsey Lohan and Tony Award winner Daisey Eagan, and toured with Natalie Grant, Danny Gokey, Steven Curtis Chapman, Mercy Me, Charlie Daniels, The Gaither Vocal Band and more. Recently, Vest composed music for the pilot of a sitcom filmed in Texas and is creating the score for a film with LeighAllyn Baker, the mom from Disney’s “Good Luck Charlie.” He also produced “Pray for Jerusalem,” a song by Charles Billingsley and Bob Carlisle, which was released Oct. 20. “I am so fortunate. I am amazed when I sit back and think about all the work I have done. I would have never dreamed my life would become this,” Vest said. The youngest of seven children, Vest, who grew up in Hartselle and graduated from Brewer High, found an escape in music. “We were dirt poor. I had a really tough and really hard life. But all of us did the best we could,” Vest said. “I feel so lucky I found music.” Vest’s musical journey began at the age of 3 when his brother, a drummer, got him a snare drum. “I drove everybody in the house crazy because I played it all the time,” Vest said. “Eventually, I got a drum kit. From there, I started playing in bands and

After graduating from high school, Vest became a professional musician and started performing on sessions in Nashville. His transition from a professional musician to production happened unexpectedly. “I set out to be a musician. But when you get hired to play on sessions, part of the process of tracking is putting your input in. I began arranging for a few different people and writing charts on sessions,” Vest said. “Now my passion is producing artists and developing who they are as musicians, singers and songwriters. I just want to help them along on their journey.” To learn about producing, Vest found a mentor in Nashville producer and composer Michael Demus. “One of the first things he told me was, ‘Forget everything you think you know and I’m going to show you how the old boys do it.’ If you didn’t know his

heart, that might sound arrogant. But it wasn’t. He was trying to help me learn,” Vest said. “For the longest time, I had a picture of him on my desktop. When I thought I was done with a mix, I would click on his picture and I could hear him say, ‘Are you sure you’re done?’” Along with Demus, Vest found inspiration from Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. “That guy was a genius. So was Prince and Freddie Mercury. All those guys had a huge impact on me,” Vest said. “Look at what Brian Wilson did on a four-track machine with no technology. What he did will never be able to be replicated.” In 1996, Vest founded the production company E320 on Modaus Road. Two decades ago, he moved his studio to his home on the edge of Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. “Originally, I thought you had to go somewhere and relocate in order to succeed in this business. The majority of time it’s true. When people want to make it in country music, most of the time, they’re going to make the move to Nashville. For what I want to do with See MUSICAL, page 5

s I drove through downtown Hartselle the night of November 1, I was almost blinded by the bright and colorful lights of holiday decorations hanging on street poles in the central business district. The display put the upcoming Christmas season in the spotlight, three or four weeks earlier than usual. I was reminded of the changes that have occurred in Christmas since I was a teenage boy living on a farm in another part of the state. The lifestyle of our farm family was the same in January as it was in December. We were sharecroppers struggling to get by from one

hen it comes to snipe hunting, all you need is a sack and a gullible cousin. And honestly, the sack is optional. The idea of snipe hunting is to find someone that has yet to be told about snipes, and convince them that a snipe is an incredibly allusive but valuable bird. Descriptions of the bird vary and ultimately don’t matter all that much. All that matters is convincing the cousin that a snipe exists and is known to be in whatever area you are gathered in. Fifty-five-gallon drums of shelled corn have been laid in store and the kernels will be placed at strategic feeding spots so deer will develop favorable feeding habits in range of the stands. Shooting houses will be cleared of mice beds and wasp nests. Torn camouflage fabric hiding tripod hunting stands will be replaced. Now is the time for checking hunting equipment including guns and skinning knives as well as sighting in new scopes and servicing ATV vehicles. Closets will be checked to make sure the latest in hunting clothing has been washed in a

The gifts we had under the tree seldom lived up to our highest expectations. Nevertheless, we were thankful to get an inexpensive gift or two and a handful of fruit, nuts and candy. Christmas during the World War II years was one to be desired, especially for children. Parents had more money to spend but fewer gift items to buy. Many staple consumer products were rationed in support of the war effort. They included leather, gasoline and

sugar. Wood replaced medal in the manufacture of most toys. The stores in my hometown didn’t put up Christmas trees and display children’ toys and games until after the Thanksgiving holiday. A Christmas parade was staged on the first Saturday in December. It was limited to a police car, high school marching band, a couple of church-sponsored floats and the arrival of Santa Claus on the town’s only fire truck. Celebrating the birth of the Christ Child was the focal point for most farm families. step is to lead them as far back into the woods as their fear of the dark will allow them to go. It’s helpful for the ruse if you can position them in the middle of a game trail, but this is also an optional step. Having positioned them in the appropriate spot, the rest of the hunting crew goes off into every direction, telling the cousin that they are going to make a large circle around the cousin and slowly push the snipe towards him or her, at which point the cousin is to capture the snipe. As you have probably deduced by this time, the hunting party will be back at the house having

consumed three or four s’mores by the time the cousin pieces together what they have fallen victim to. On one such trip some years ago, a cousin who had not yet given up on the idea of capturing his prey was certain that he had a snipe coming right towards him. It being dark and he having never seen a snipe, his confusion was understandable. Thankfully for everyone involved, the skunk he thought was a snipe took a sharp turn before he had the chance to try and jump on him, otherwise the hunt would have ruined everyone’s night, not just his.

W h e n asked if I play golf (which seems to be the sport of choice for ministers), I often reply with tongue in cheek, “No, I deer hunt and can’t afford two big sins.” Deer hunting has drastically changed from the days when Clint and I began many years ago with the Post Oak Club in York, Ala-

bama. We invested a modest membership fee that was used to pay a few club expenses and lease a large tract of land. In preparation for the season, members gathered at the clubhouse and fanned out over the hunting areas clearing lanes to the stands and making sure each stand had a number. All hunts were scheduled before opening day and were group events. Hunters were positioned at the stands and drivers with dogs pushed the deer toward them. For safety’s sake, only shotguns were allowed. Hopefully, the noise of the drivers and the barking of the hounds would push a buck out of the thick briar patches and cut over timber close enough for a shot. At noon we gathered at the clubhouse for a warm bowl of stew and to give a report of where deer may have been seen. If someone

had missed an escaping buck, he was the object of a lot of goodnatured harassment. When the afternoon hunt was over any deer taken would be hung upon a cleaning rack and dressed. The lucky hunter would get the rack. All who had participated in the hunt would receive a share of venison. We were slow in dispersing as we lingered sharing in the commonality of a group who had enjoyed the hunt as a team. The expenses were much less than those of the modern hunter. Not a lot of equipment was required. A simple shotgun, a few buckshot loaded shells, a pair of boots, and an army surplus field jacket were not that costly. Memories made were priceless.

Hartselle High InSPIRESS young minds with STEM

By Jaylin Daniel For the Enquirer On Oct. 25, Hartselle High School students brought their engineering and science knowledge to F.E. Burleson Elementary, igniting the imaginations of young learners and fostering their progress in STEM subjects. Throughout the day, elementary students engaged in a variety of hands-on activities, from implosions of aluminum cans to creating “elephant toothpaste” pumpkins. These activities were led by HHS engineering class students who shared the fundamentals of engineering with their young counterparts. A primary objective of this

collaborative educational effort was to introduce the elementary students to the ongoing project known as “InSPIRESS” (Innovative System Project for the Increased Recruitment of Emerging STEM Students.) InSPIRESS is an outreach initiative that involves high school students in designing a payload for a spacecraft bound for Venus. This payload will analyze Venus’s surface and atmosphere to address the critical issue of climate change. The demonstrations conducted by the engineering teams, AVIS and Glider, not only promoted STEM education and a passion for science but also raised awareness among the ele-

mentary students about pressing scientific challenges and their potential role as future STEM leaders in addressing these issues. The educational field trip for the elementary students culminated in a spectacular weather balloon demonstration. Here, students discovered the importance of meteorology and how scientists use small-scale blimps to measure wind speed and predict weather patterns. To cap off the day of scientific inspiration, the young learners released numerous smaller balloons, symbolizing the end of a day filled with captivating science experiences.

production, though, I don’t have to go anywhere,” Vest said. Vest named the studio after Ephesians 3:20, which says, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” “It’s my life verse. I know it is because of God that I have been able to work with the people I have worked with,” Vest said. “God has opened more doors for me than I could have ever imagined.”

Hiking & Biking Trail: The 5.5-mile hiking and biking trail near the visitors’ center offers views of Gray Field and Flint Creek, a popular spot for the thousands of sandhill cranes that winter at Wheeler. When the trail splits at the 1.9-mile mark, go to the right to follow Dinsmore Slough, which is full of ducks and geese, or go to the left to follow Flint Creek. White Springs Dike: The 7–mile White Springs Dike, sandwiched between the water and a wooded swamp, offers unobstructed views of the Tennessee River. The dike serves as a gathering place for thousands of ducks, red-tailed hawks, northern harriers, ospreys and bald eagles. The trail is accessible on Alabama 20, just north of the U.S. 31 Tennessee River bridge. There is an alternate starting point at Arrowhead Landing. Arrowhead Landing Road: A 4.8-mile road parallels the western shore of Limestone Bay. Thousands of snow geese and American white pelicans visit the bay daily. To access the trail, take the Mooresville exit to the stop sign. Turn right on old Highway 20 west and turn left onto the gravel road at the boat ramp sign. Park in the small parking area on the left.

Sept. 29, The annual River Clay Fine Arts Festival. 67 artists from 10 states displayed works created with stones, paint, salvaged materials and more. Participants included

a mixed media artist who makes brooms, a leather worker who makes handbags, notebook covers and spur straps, a metal worker who makes corkscrews, knives and fire poker stands, and a ceramicist who makes planters, vases and wall tiles.

Two Hartselle High School seniors received two out of the three awards in the high school division of the River Clay art competition. Ethan Loyd earned first place in the division for his painting and Jo Nelson came in third for her graphite portrait.

Vest spends time in the studio, which sits next to his home, every single day. The building features 18-inch walls separating the tracking room from the control room, two vocal booths, a full kitchen, a murphy bed with music notes as handles and a sound mixer with 64 inputs. “Technology has made everything so much easier. Used to be we had those big tape machines and I’d spend a lot of time with a razor blade fixing to make an edit on a tape and going, ‘Are you sure because I’m about to cut this.’ What used to take me half a day now takes me

seconds,” Vest said. Along with producing for nationally-known musicians, Vest works with local artists. One of his current goals is to “bring back the Alabama sound.” “I believe there is something about that river, something about this red dirt and something about the people in this state. The talent pool here is unbelievable,” Vest said. “A few years ago, I embarked on this journey of bringing back the Alabama sound and have a core group of artists I’m working with to accomplish that.” Those artists include soul husband-and-wife duo Jus-

tin and Tab, Christian artist Emory Berry, folk singer Tim Chandler, Southern rock musician Jesse Priest and more. “Really, everything started with Jesse. One night I was watching Retro Couch on YouTube and was listening to him sing. The production wasn’t great, it was pretty raw, but the musicianship was amazing. I had no idea who he was at the time,” Vest said. “About a week later, I learned he was from Cullman. It immediately became clear to me that Jesse Priest would play a big role in bringing back the Alabama sound.”

Blackwell Run Road: The 7.5-mile path winds through a swamp of cypress trees and beaver dams. Great blue herons, red-tailed hawks, deer, beaver and turtles are common sightings. Expect also to see butterflies. To access the trail, take County Line Road exit from I-565. Drive south for 5.5 miles. Look for Jolly B Road on the left and follow it for 1 mile to gravel parking on the right. Point Mallard Park Where: Decatur Over 3 miles of trails await walkers, runners and bicyclists at Point Mallard Park in Southeast Decatur. The trail, part of the city-wide Dr. Bill Sims Trail, borders Flint Creek. Bankhead Forest Where: Lawrence County Waterfalls, sandstone bluffs and a cascade of colorful trees will welcome visitors to the 181,230-acre Bankhead National Forest. Contained within Bankhead, the 25,000-acre Sipsey Wilderness offers 51 miles of trails. Brushy Lake Recreation Area on Mount Olive Road: The Civilian Conservation Corps dammed Brushy Creek and developed the lake as a recreation area in the 1930s. Paths include a short hiking trail under the bluffs and a paved walkway on the lake. The recreation area serves as an ideal spot for birdwatching and easy canoeing or kayak-

ing. Day use fee is $3 per vehicle. Natural Bridge Recreation Area on Winston County 63: A partially paved hiking trail leads from the ridge at the parking lot and picnic area down into a forest canyon with sandstone geologic formations, including a natural bridge. Marbut Bend Where: Limestone County The flat 1–mile loop on Buck Island Road in Elkmont takes visitors through a wetland, by a pond created by a beaver dam, through an open field and along the Elk River. Expect to see migratory shore birds, wood ducks, deer, egrets and more. The trail is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. Accessible off Alabama 99 near West Limestone High School. Swan Creek Greenway Where: Athens A canopy of trees covers the 2.5-mile trail east of downtown Athens. Don’t be surprised to see deer, herons, songbirds, pipers and more. The trail also features a restored covered bridge, a wetland area and a creek. Access the trail at U.S. 72 or the city’s Sportsplex. Little River Canyon Nature Preserve Where: Fort Payne Sassafras, hickory, maple and dogwood trees fill the nature preserve at the Little River Canyon Preserve. Also

expect to encounter 45-foot waterfalls. For those who would rather drive, an 11-mile scenic route runs along the west side of the canyon along Alabama 176. The scenic drive begins at Little River Falls Boardwalk Overlook and ends at Eberhart Point Overlook. While in Fort Payne, visit the 3,502-acre DeSoto State Park. Make sure to check out the 107-foot DeSoto Falls. Dismals Canyon Where: Phil Campbell A 1.5-mile hiking trail leads PHOTOS BY JERONIMO NISA visitors into the 85-acre Dismals Canyon nature preserve. Some of Vest’s other projects include creating music for an Armor All commercial, recording the Alabama A&M gospel choir, producing a new record for Charley Cain, the father of the Christian trio CAIN, scoring the film “Dark Matters” for Morgan County native Brandon McLemore and producing music for the Decatur-based studio Brainy Pixel’s animated series “Cubekins.” “We’ve worked with David on several projects and we’ve always loved working with him. David is super talented, so easy to work with and an amazing creative collaborator,” said

Brannon Hollingsworth, creative director for Brainy Pixel. Vest treasures every single day he spends in the studio. “People aske me, ‘What’s the biggest thing you ever worked on?’ The answer is always the same. It’s what I’m working on at the moment. I feel very blessed to work with each and every musician that steps into this studio. Music is a universal language that crosses barriers and crosses cultures. I believe the songs in people’s hearts need to be heard. I just feel fortunate to help get those songs heard.”

“Every Wish Way” By Shannon Bright Eliza is tired of a terrible love life. One bad boyfriend after another is getting old. She wants a man to love her like Fitzwilliam Darcy loved Elizabeth Bennet. But men like Fitzwilliam Darcy only exists in fiction; it would take a miracle or maybe a wish for him to exist. To Eliza’s dismay, picking up her favorite childhood nail polish bottle summons a wish granter named Beckett. He was once a wisher that selfishly wished for more than three wishes. Trying to avoid his mistake, Eliza carefully thinks her wishes through. Her first wish is for Fitzwilliam Darcy to exist in modern time. Despite him

being supposedly perfect, Eliza can’t help but feel like things aren’t right. Is it self-absorbed Darcy, her fear of rejection or Beckett always being around that is making things complicated? Could she possibly be falling for the imperfect and

“Better Hate Than Never” By Chloe Liese Kate and Christopher grew up together playing and taunting each other. As adults, they can’t seem to stand one another. They’re still taunting, only it’s more vicious. Kate is always flitting and fluttering in and out of town. She seems to never stay still for long. That happens with some who have ADHD and want to fight the injustices of the world. But really Kate is just trying to find a place to belong. Christopher likes the familiar. He is nowhere near as adventurous as Kate. The two are nothing alike, but both have vulnerabilities that they need to be open and honest about. To get along for their friends and family sake, they come to find there’s an electric spark between them that can’t be put out. This is the second book in the Wilmot Sisters series. This a good book for anyone who enjoys a hefty amount of spice in their books. Like Chloe Liese ‘s other writings, these characters have a little something extra about them that makes them special. The characters are more like actual people than the perfect HEA’s we all love to read about. People are messy and complicated, and she draws it out in a funloving way.

If their service is voluntary, you may only know about their day job. Offer to treat them to their favorite beverage or buy their next meal. Be supportive of their family, too. More importantly, support programs that improve services to first responders. Connect with a first responder who came to your rescue and thank them. Steele leads Hartselle to win By Russell Frye For the Enquirer

The Hartselle Tigers found themselves in a difficult spot on Friday night in their matchup with Bob Jones to close the regular season. “It was a difficult ride through the regular season to finish 8-2,” Hartselle coach Bryan Moore said. The Tigers entered the game with a banged-up offensive backfield with injuries to their quarterback and top two running backs. Hartselle was looking for someone to step up and help take some snaps and rushing attempts to get through the game. In stepped senior Peyton Steele, a four-year starter on defense for the Tigers. “What a game by Peyton,” Moore said. “He was really dynamic with the ball in his hand tonight. What unselfish play by him when his team need it most.” Steele, who last played offense in eighth grade, took over the offense and led Hartselle to a 35-21 win over the 7A Patriots. “I enjoyed the game tonight, being able to play both ways,” Steele said. “It was fun being able to play quarterback again and doing whatever my team needed.” Bob Jones took a 7-0 lead with 4:24 left in the first quarter on a four-yard run. The combination of Steele and quarterback Noah Lee led the Tigers on a 76-yard scoring drive to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:11 left in the second quarter. Steele capped the drive with a nine-

yard run, breaking multiple Bob Jones’ tackles. Following a 3-and-out forced by the Tigers’ defense, Hartselle used a pounding rushing game to grab a 14-7 lead when Steele scored his second touchdown on a three-yard run with 4:37 remaining in the half. The Tigers ran the ball eight times for 73 yards, including a 21-yard run by Ri Fletcher and a 14-yard run by Steele. Hartselle extended their lead to 21-7 with a 10-play, 62-yard scoring drive capped off by a 14-yard Lincoln Bryant touchdown run with 8:02 remaining in the third quarter. Bryant ran three times for 32 yards during the drive. Steele’s third touchdown pushed the Tigers’ lead to 28-7 with 4:50 remaining in the third. The score was set up by Jace Preuitt’s recovery of the kickoff that Bob Jones did not field. Steele had 24 yards rushing on the drive. The Patriots scored on a 6-yard run to cap off a 60-yard scoring drive to cut the lead to 28-14 with 58 seconds remaining in the third. Hartselle responded with a scoring drive that took a little more than a minute to push their lead back to 21, 35-14, when Bryant scored on a five-yard run with 11:45 remaining in the game. Steele had a 45-yard run that set up Bryant’s score. Bob Jones used a 15-play drive to march 74 yards to cut the Hartselle lead to 35-21 on a four-yard scoring run with 5:23 remaining. The Patriots recovered the ensuing onside kick to make

another run at the endzone. However, the Hartselle defense rose to the occasion and stopped Bob Jones on a fourth-down play at the 18-yard line with 2:49 remaining. The Tigers ran out the remaining time for the 35-21 victory. Steele finished with 17 carries for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Steele’s play tonight can best be summed up by this Sherrilyn Kenyon quote: “Strength through adversity. The strongest steel is forged by the hottest fires. It is pounded and struck repeatedly… The fire gives it power and flexibility, and the blows give it strength. ENQUIRER PHOTO BY JIM MEADOWS Those two things make it able to withstand every bat- Peyton Steele scores his second touchdown in the first half of the Tigers’ 35-21 win tle…” Peyton has been forged over Bob Jones. for moments like tonight through his time on the football field and on the baseball field. He has faced a lot of difficult moments and has been on the top of the mountain and in the valley below. Tonight, he was back on top of the mountain. Bryant had nine carries for 67 yards and two scores. Fletcher had 31 yards rushing and Jayden Morris added 27. Lee finished 7-of-11 for 53 yards passing.
