You will begin to see our new marketing materials begin to appear very soon, but we hope that you will help spread the word about HCB through our Referral Program. For every successful member referral, we are able to give back to our members through complimentary monthly dues, Veritas gift cards and more.

As you scroll through the pages of this Bulletin, we encourage you to consider bringing guests to our events so that they can experience our community. After all, the best new members are those who are referred to us by our members. Contact

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Fellow Members,

It’s now February and classes are back in session at the University. However, we here at the HCB are always in session. Thanks to our Member Experience Committee and our Member Experience staff we had many engaging events in January and have more slated for February. Our First Friday Game Night has become quite a success. The night is filled with board games, pickleball, corn hole and other activities for your enjoyment. We now have Beer Flights in the Club Pub on Monday through Friday for those of you who might want to enjoy different types of beer. On Friday, February 3rd the Crimson Men’s Hockey team takes on No. 3-ranked Quinnipiac College at 7:00 PM at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. It is also Harvard Club of Boston Member Appreciation Night at the BrightLandry Center. Tickets are half price for HCB members, and there will be other surprises throughout the game. Come cheer on Harvard Hockey on the 3rd as a way to get ready for the Beanpot Tournament on Monday, February 6th at 4:30 PM. Join your fellow Harvard alums in the ClubPub as you root our team to victory without those annoying BU, BC and Northeastern fans. Go Crimson! For more information about HCB Member Appreciation Night on 2/3/23, please check our app or contact Dan Farmer at dfarmer@harvardclub.com

The HCB was honored to welcome Hank Willis Thomas to our clubhouse in January. Hank is the artist who created The Embrace which was recently unveiled on Boston Common. Hank, along with members from his organization, For Freedoms, the Mass Design Group, and artists from around the country celebrated at our clubhouse following a wonderful day of unveiling festivities. We hope to see more of Hank while he’s attending the Harvard Business School. Many thanks to Courtney Jacobovits, a member of our Board of Governors, for arranging for Hank and the others to enjoy the hospitality of our Club and General Manager Steve Cummings for his support.

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine commissioned a portrait of Dr. George Franklin Grant to be displayed

at the school. Dr. Grant holds two significant places in history, one with the University and one within the world of golf. Dr. Grant was the first African American professor at Harvard along with being the inventor of the wooden golf tee. The painting is finished but unfortunately the space at HSDM that has been designated to display the painting is undergoing renovation and will not be completed for several months. A suggestion was made to have the painting displayed at the HCB. The artist who painted Dr. Grant, Stephen Coit ’71 gb ’77, and the Harvard Dental School have graciously agreed to have the portrait displayed at HCB until their space is completed. Stephen is a noted artist for the University and has done all of the paintings of underrepresented notable figures in Harvard history. Four reproductions of his work are on the walls of our clubhouse – President Drew Faust, Reverend Peter Gomes, Richard Greener, and Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck. The Grant painting will be unveiled at our clubhouse sometime later this month or in the beginning of March.

The Nominating Committee and the Board of Governors Executive Committee are in the process of planning for our Annual Meeting in the spring. Please note the date has not been finalized. As part of the process, we are reviewing candidates for club leadership positions along with reviewing our committee structure, their charters and committee rosters. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email address listed in the next paragraph.

Many thanks to all of you for choosing to be members of our beloved Club. Your loyalty and support make us thrive as a community, onward together. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact me directly via president@harvardclub.com

Best regards,

GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER

Dear Harvard Club of Boston Membership,

While overall club operations have now slowed slightly following a very busy holiday season, I am pleased to report that the first four months of our fiscal year (September through December) were very active. Revenues exceeded our expectations and, along with careful cost control, we are happy to report that we are approximately $500,000 ahead of budgeted profit/loss.

We continue to forge ahead with major projects and opportunities that will add significant and tangible to our membership in the near and long-term future. Here is a summary of just some of those exciting projects.

• The 415 Newbury Street Project continues to move forward. We are currently in the permitting phase with the City of Boston.

• The second-floor bathroom renovations continue and upon completion they will be fully handicapped accessible.

• Our highly-anticipated expanded outside dining initiative is now in the permitting phase with the City of Boston. We look forward to being able to offer our members even more outdoor dining space in the near future.

• We continue to expand our use and offerings in ClubPub. We are currently looking into more food service and activities in that important space come the spring months.

• The Annual Meeting will be here before we know it. We have already begun to plan for what should be an incredible and important experience together.

• After months of preparation and work, we will be rolling out the new digital marketing campaign which will highlight all that HCB has to offer to members.

• Our staff and committees are conducting a full and thorough review of our IT systems and recommendations for system upgrades so that we can improve our efficiencies and offer an even more enhanced member experience

• We are entering Phase 1 of a three-phase roof replacement project.

We understand that this is a very busy time of the year for our members, but I hope that you will be able to join us at some of our upcoming Member Events, take advantage of the relaxing and private Member Commons, enjoy a cocktail and complimentary hors d’oeuvres in the ClubPub or breakfast, lunch or dinner in Veritas. For those who will be traveling whether for business or pleasure, we encourage you to utilize our extensive Reciprocal Club network which numbers more than 170 exclusive clubs located across the globe. We continue to expand that Reciprocal network so that you can benefit from our HCB network no matter where you are in the world.

Sincerely,

3

HCB’s Madison Ho Wins British Junior Open!

HCB Member Madison Ho (pictured left) and Carlton Capella became the first American co-champions at the prestigious British Junior Open in the GU17 and BU13 divisions, respectively, capping off what was a record-setting tournament for Team USA, January 4-8, in Birmingham England.

In the final against Egypt’s 3/4 seed Nour Khafagy, Ho stormed to the title 11-8, 11-8, 14-12 in thirty-eight minutes.

“It feels completely surreal, winning the BJO is the ultimate dream as a junior and not one that I honestly thought going into the tournament I was going to achieve,” Ho said.
