If you’ve never attended a Home-A-Rama (HAR), this would be the perfect year to change that streak because the 2022 HAR is extra special. Courtney Albright, Director of Communications and Special Events for Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI), calls this year’s show the “trifecta” because of everything it will offer.

The 2022 HAR, whose title sponsor is First Internet Bank, is being hosted for the third and final time at the Chatham Hills neighborhood. The Club at Chatham Hills, a private golf course residential community, offers unique topography of creeks, rolling hills, woods, lakes and two Pete Dye designed golf courses (an Executive 9-Hole Course and a Championship 18-Hole Course). Other amenities include a 65,000 sq. ft. clubhouse that has a four-lane bowling alley, two-story fitness center with a spin studio, tennis facilities, indoor pool, and outdoor pool with cabanas as well as a swim-up bar (the only one in the state).

This year, however, families may want to consider making a day of it to not only take in the gorgeous homes but also enjoy delicious food, wine, and beer from local distilleries. The $2-3M homes featured in HAR are between 5,500 sq. ft. and 8,200 sq. ft. Sometimes community members are hesitant to check out a HAR because they assume they wouldn’t be able to afford such luxury. Albright insists that everyone who visits will not only have fun but will go home armed with ample knowledge and fresh ideas for a future build or renovation.

They say that everything old is new again. In the case of Sigma Builders, what’s new feels old in the sense of ample experience. Although the company launched in 2016, which from a custom builder perspective is relatively new, they are in no way green.

“We’ve done that where a home has a cathedral type ceiling and we need triangle windows that are a certain size,” says Wang. “Pella works with us to get those designed and built.”

Think of fireclay as an update to the traditional cast iron enamel that were popular throughout the late 19th and early to mid 20th centuries (and still are in many designs). Molded from white clay infused with glaze, which is heated to extremely high temperatures, fireclay is more resistant to scratching and staining than cast iron and is ultra-easy to clean. They are exceptionally durable and make a fantastic material for apron, undermount, and farmhouse sinks. This is a look that will last. Be aware that fireclay is heavy; you will need reinforced cabinetry and countertops to bear the weight.

There are some drawbacks to consider though. If you drop something, you’ll know it (they can be quite loud), and they are more susceptible to scratching. And then there’s the lack of variety: stainless is stainless. The goal during the development of the product was to take all the best ideas of the existing louvered pergola industry and combine them into one product. The louver design uses a dual wall to create a dead air insulation space inside the louver, much like a dual pane glass window. Lee Supply is also unique in the fact that they employ Chef Ben, who left Maggiano’s to become the corporate chef for Clark Appliances in late 2005, making him a well-known fixture in the Indianapolis builder appliance market. The Carrington team focuses on fully custom projects, so “if you can dream it up, we’ll find a way to build it,” said Carrington Homes President, Carl McIntyre. One recent project of note featured the addition of rustic trusses made of rough sawn oak and metal tubing. The construction of these courts and simulator spaces depends on the type of project the team is walking into – new build versus additions to existing homes. McIntyre shared that additions take 6-10 months on average, while new homes are less predictable as the entertainment space is built along with the rest of the home. The Home-A-Rama project took 11 months to complete. Carrington Homes’ work has caught the attention

Planning for this year’s project began back in January, as it takes months to prepare for such an undertaking. Stater shares that two of the team’s favorite features are the his & hers home offices, as well as the basketball court and golf simulator. Yes, you heard that right. There was no better team to bring the most unique spaces of the home – the basketball court and golf simulator – to life than Carrington Homes. With about 30 basketball court and 10 golf simulator installations under its belt, the Carrington team is a local pro on all things fun.

“This phase sets us apart because the first thing people may ask about is not necessarily the key issue, which is why we prescribe a design process that addresses the client’s root needs and desires,” says Scheuermann. “We also determine what we can and cannot address as far as build and site conditions.”

“We advise appropriately to help clients make an investment while still feeling comfortable in their spending,” says Richardson.Again,because their goal is to erect timeless projects that are accurate, buildable, and achievable, BPI puts in a lot of background work (i.e., construction plans, framing plans, permits).

The BPI team believes in creating outdoor living spaces for their clients to create memorable experiences with family and friends. “A lot of people will throw money at something to be looked at,” says Richardson. “We specialize in creating projects that are not just aesthetically pleasing but are also functional and intentional. Those elements should always coexist.”

That may involve changing a construction method or a material. For instance, some people perceive materials, such as pavers, as being outside of their reach, but that’s not always the case.

“We can use that element as one of the key components to help refine as discussed,” says Richardson. “Based on tweaking that design, I can adjust the budget to make it work for any given customer.”

Tomorrowland may be a themed section at Disney World, but it’s also the framework for which the team at BPI Outdoor Living works. According to Kyla Scheuermann, sales manager at BPI, with every project they tackle, they’re focused on building timeless experiences both for now and into the future.

Adds Ross Richardson, design manager, “We want our projects to create a legacy for the property and the homeowner, so families can pass it down the line.”

To efficiently facilitate step one, the team presents the client with a series of questions to better understand the purpose and intention for the space. They then get into more detail in the second step where they present a 3D model of the outdoor living space to help clients more clearly visualize the design solution and overall plans. Step three involves discussing material choices. At this point, they have honed in on the final design package as well as the client’s investment level.

Throughout the entire process the BPI team continually makes necessary revisions to stay within the client’s desired investment level. The team talks through feasible options and identifies ways to achieve certain styles that check all the boxes without breaking the bank. While Richardson reaches out to suppliers for numbers, he also has a general budget calculator he can implement into each step of the project. As the client gets more dialed into materials, he can adjust those numbers to present a more accurate estimate as a key component of the final package. Each level of design – from initial concept to first master plan to revised master plan to final design package – has a critical budget element.
