HCC Library Message from the Director

quarterly

Hello colleagues! I hope your spring semester is off to a good start, now that we have all been able to dig out from Mother Nature’s super-sized gift of snow. Perhaps all those signs saying “Let it snow,” which we posted in the Library, worked a little too well! As you can see, we’ve decided to change the HCC Library newsletter from a publication that we issue once each semester to one that we will send quarterly. Our goal is to send you more timely information and to keep each issue brief.

Reciprocal Borrowing with HCPL The HCC Library has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with Harford County Public Libraries (HCPL). HCC Library card holders may request HCPL materials and have them shipped to the HCC Library for free. Likewise, materials from HCC Library may be requested and delivered to an HCPL branch. All materials may be returned to any HCPL branch or to the HCC Library.

Please be sure to check out the information about our Little Free Library and drop off (or pick up) some books!

To search for and request materials from HCPL, use the Library’s online catalog available from the Library’s website (www.harford.edu/library) under Research Resources — Books, Videos, & More. Click on “Library Catalog” to search for items, changing the “Limit to” box to anything other than HCC materials only. When you find an item available through an HCPL branch, click on “Request It” and enter your library barcode number to have the item shipped to HCC Library.

Enjoy the semester!

If you have any questions about this service, ask a librarian!

This issue focuses on National Library Week. We are especially looking forward to the reading by D. Watkins (author of The Beast Side: Living (and Dying) While Black in America on Thursday, April 14. We hope you will encourage students to attend.

National Library Week 2

“Libraries Transform,” the theme for the 2016 National Library Week celebration, couldn’t be more appropriate for the HCC Library and its mission to support the intellectual and academic growth of the campus community. Our celebration will begin Monday, April 11 and end on April 18. There will be a Lucky Seat Contest that will take place throughout the week. Customers

New Library Staff Members architectural firm, and ‘professional somebody’ for a service business that my husband and I own and operate! I love learning new things and working at HCC, where learning and a great faculty and staff are what it’s all about.

Hello! My name is Sheila Siebert. I recently became the Administrative Assistant for the Library and eLearning at HCC. I was the Administrative Assistant for the Visual, Performing and Applied Arts division in Joppa Hall for the past four years. I earned a BA in Math and Historic Preservation from Goucher College and completed the Accelerated Certification for Teaching program at the Notre Dame of Maryland University. In addition to administrative support jobs, I have worked in a number of different areas: computer systems programmer (back when there were mainframes and tape libraries), high school math teacher, administrative assistant for an

National Library Week Plan to attend a reading by author D. Watkins from his book, The Beast Side: Living (And Dying) While Black in America on Thursday, April 14, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. in DH202 & 203.

A native Baltimorean, I first fell in love with Harford County in college while doing Historic Site survey work for the Harford County Planning and Zoning office. My husband and I moved our family to Harford County in the ‘90s and have raised two daughters here. I love to read, sew, swim, and be outdoors. I also enjoy participating in many activities as a member of the Harford County Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women): the annual Judith Resnik Award luncheon held every spring here at HCC, monthly programs, a book group, and a cooking club. I am ever so happy to be at the Library!

Hi, my name is Tim Gobble, and I was hired in October of 2015 as a Library Assistant. I also work for Harford County Public Library as a Library Assistant I for the Aberdeen branch. I recently graduated from University of Maryland University College in December 2014, with a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice. I have enjoyed the new experience of working at an academic library, and look forward to the spring semester.

He holds a Master’s in Education from Johns Hopkins University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Baltimore. Seating is limited and reservations are recommended; email ssiebert@harford.edu or call 443-412-2316. Visit the 2nd floor of the Library for free coffee and tea on Tuesday, April 12 between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., or while supplies last. The Library will sponsor a free drawing for a $100 gift certificate to use at any upcoming HCC performance. The drawing is open to those who participate in specific National Library Week activities. Look for further information in the weeks to come.

The HCC Library offers access to JSTOR, a digital library of academic journals, books, and primary sources in the arts and sciences. You can narrow your search by subject area, item type, date, and language. JSTOR is a great resource for historical books and articles not available elsewhere. You’ll find JSTOR listed on the Library’s website under Research Resources—Research Databases. Remember, you will need your HCC library card number (the barcode number on the back of your HCC ID) to access databases from off-campus.

Little Free Library Have you noticed a mysteriouslooking structure in front of the Library’s 1st-floor entrance? No, it isn’t a birdhouse or a mailbox. It’s HCC Library’s own Little Free Library! (www.littlefreelibrary.org) The idea behind it is simple: take a book, leave a book. Little Free Library is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. To build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.” Begun in 2010, the Little Free Library’s original goal was “to build 2,510 Libraries — as many as Andrew Carnegie—and keep going.” That goal was met in August 2012. As of January 2016, there are now 36,000 Little Free Libraries across the U.S. — including one here at HCC. Leave a book or take a book today!
