HCC Library quarterly Message from the Director Season’s Greetings! How does each semester manage to fly by so quickly? Exams and end-ofsemester papers and projects are upon us already. Did you know that the Library and the Learning Center are teaming up to offer some “stressbusting” activities during exam week? Look for our pop-up makerspace in L214 on Dec. 10-11, featuring Ozobots, VR, legos, clay, coloring, and crafts, along with crochet and knitting lessons! Other activities continue all week in both the Library and the Learning Center. Planning is well underway for the Learning Commons. StudioJaed was awarded the building consultant contract, and project manager Phil Conte will lead several focus group sessions in January for students, faculty and staff. Stay tuned for your invitation. My colleagues in the Learning Center, Test Center, CETL and eLearning join me in thanking all the faculty who participated in the faculty survey this month. We in the Library also send thanks to the several hundred students who participated in the student survey during the week of Nov. 26. We want and need your input to shape the Learning Commons to meet your needs! Mark your calendars for the February 7 opening of the spring exhibit at the Hays-Heighe House, Votes for Women: Taking Our Place in Politics. I thank co-curators Stephanie Hallock and Gina Calia-Lotz for their excellent work to develop this exhibit, with support from Julie Mancine and Matt Anthony.

New Library Employees Matthew Anthony I joined the HCC Library this past summer as a volunteer with Technical Services, working in the stacks and on the Circulation Desk. In August, I came on board at the Hays-Heighe House as a part-time, temporary Exhibits Assistant. I have been working to support the current HHH exhibit, World War I’s Long Shadow. Currently, I am working in support of the spring exhibit on women’s suffrage. I am pursuing a Ph.D. in American Studies at the College of William & Mary. My dissertation research focuses on the development of birding in the US in the 20 th century, and its role both as a sport and a science. As a nature lover and passionate birder, I like to spend my spare time traveling Virginia documenting birds, as well as sampling the local craft brews and cuisine. I will return to Williamsburg in the spring semester as a teaching assistant in the American Studies department. My goal is to defend my dissertation in 2019 and move into a full-time museum or teaching position.
Rose DeLuca Hello! I’m Rose DeLuca, part-time Reference and Instruction Librarian at the HCC Library. I graduated with a BA degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan, and earned my Master’s in Library Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. I spent 11 years working in the private sector at a Help Desk and as a Business Systems Analyst, and then spent four years working as a part-time reference librarian with the Baltimore County Public Library. My family and I have settled in Baltimore County where we enjoy reading, hiking, playing with our dog, doing arts and crafts and watching movies. We have two daughters and a puppy. I look forward to working with all of you at HCC!
Veterans Day Display A prisoners of war/missing in action “white table” was set up in the Library, alongside a commemorative display where students and staff could post a yellow ribbon honoring a U.S. veteran. “The tradition of setting a separate table in honor of our prisoners of war and missing comrades has been in place since the end of the Vietnam War. The manner in which this table is decorated is full of special symbols to help us remember our brothers and sisters in arms.” (from Navy Live, the official blog of the U.S. Navy)

World War I's Long Shadow Thursday, August 23, 2018 through Friday, December 21, 2018 The "war to end all wars" cast a long shadow across the twentieth century, serving as cause, catalyst, or key moment for all manner of modern messes. This exhibit, curated by Dr. Andrew Kellett, Associate Professor of History at Harford Community College, will take us through both the seismic shifts in the global balance of power that result and the dislocations of borders, people, and cultures.
Unintended Consequences of the Treaty of Versailles Thursday, December 6 12:30-2 PM Presented by Michael Neiberg, Professor of History and Chair of War Studies at U.S. Army War College With the armistice signed in November 1918, the fighting was over, but negotiations over the treaties to resolve World War I would drag on for many months. The resulting compromises satisfied no one. Although Europe was
