Individuals need not own a Healey to join nor is membership restricted to any regional, national or continental boundaries. Members are encouraged to participate in all Club activities. Winter activities are normally indoor technical sessions or social events. Summer activities are normally outdoors involving tours and car events. Calendar year memberships are available in person at any meeting or by mail: $25.00 per individual or couple (add $10.00 for international mail). Januaray 13, 2001 The January meeting will include a Tech Session at Mini Motors in Salem . Those not interested in attending the session may enjoy a tour of Mission Mill. After the Tech Session and tour activities we will meet at Rock-n-Rogers Diner. Rex Urban of Mini Motors has provided us with his facility to hold our Tech Session, which will be conducted by Bill Bolton and will begin at 1:30 P.M. Bill’s presentation will cover everything you ever wanted to know about carburetors and fuel pumps. You won’t want to miss this one. Mini Motors address is 2775 Cherry Ave N.E., Salem, Oregon 97303 (½ mile south of Salem Parkway). The Mission Mill tour will begin at 1:30 P.M. and last approximately 2 hours. Mission Mill is a historic site that has the mill, several pioneer houses, and some interesting shops located within an area that is very enjoyable to visit. Admission for the tour is $4.00 for 1hour tour $5.00 for two hour tour ($3.00 and $4.00 for seniors). Mission Mill is located at 1313 Mill Street S.E., Salem, Oregon 97301 (South of State St., off of 12th St., across from the historic Willamette University). We will then all meet at Rock-n- Rodgers for our club meeting at 4:00 P. M. After the meeting we can enjoy the really great food served at Rock-n-Rodgers. They have a very full menu. You should be able to find something you like. There will be a joint executive board meeting of the 2000 officers and the new incoming 2001 officers at 12:00 P. M. at Mini Motors. February 10, 2000 The February meeting will be hosted by Bert and Betty Hand and Terry and Stephanie Hellickson. The meeting and optional dinner to follow will be at the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove. An activity held in conjunction with the meeting will be announced in the next Healey Northwest. u

There was no live band music since they couldn’t locate the keyboard. But that didn’t stop anyone from having a great time at the annual AHCO Christmas party.

One claimed fewer new models were equipped with cigarette lighters and ashtrays. “Why is that?” asked the second DJ. “Because fewer people use them now.” “If that’s the case,” DJ No. 2 quipped, “why do new cars still come with turn signals and speedometers?” Healey Northwest

Tech Tip Tid Bits by Doug Auburg 3.50:1 Differential Ring & Pinnion Grears Update. To recap, this is a deal that a Healey owner (Mike Lempert) in New Jersey has put together because a bunch of Healeyites on the Internet Healey Chatline were saying we needed a ”non-OD” differential gear ratio but they are rare and expensive. He found a gear manufacturer who would do the work for $220 per set with a minimum order of 100 sets. Mike reports that he has 148 confirmed orders for his ring & pinion replacement program. In his latest email he also reports that a rough cut gear pair has been produced to check fit and that the production run is set to go in four to six weeks. Orders will be cut off at the point when the final order is placed and production begins. Here’s his answer to concerns raised about installing these gears:
Tom Monaco tells me that he also has identified a local shop that is willing to do the work for those of us in AHCO, but he doesn’t have a price yet. My conclusion to all this is that we have a very economical way to change the differential gear ratio and get our engine RPM’s down at cruise speed, including installation. Again I can’t personally vouch for this deal, other than to say that I have sent in my $110 deposit to him as has Tom Monaco, Jack Jakobsen, and John Rueter and maybe others. A number of you have expressed interest in this project at the last couple of club meetings. This is your ”fair warning” that the door is closing. If you want to join this crew of Healeyites from across the country, you need to get your check for the 50% ($110) deposit to Mike Lempert, 940 William St, Bridgewater NJ 08807, (908)526-6090. From the beginning we have known that the installation is critical in terms of preciseness. Improperly aligned gears will generate noise and excessive wear. While I can’t personally guarantee the gears, I will tell you that we are using a major gear manufacturer that also supplies OEM to one or more U.S. auto makers. This is not a small job shop.” 14

HEALEY RENDEZVOUS 2001 by Bill Bolton Riverside Inn Resort, Grants Pass, OR, July 30 – Aug 3 A big event is being planned as a similar repeat of the First West Coast Meet held here in 1975. Like then, a Healey gathering that is less expensive with lots of time for people to mingle & get acquainted, whilst providing some structured entertainment, in the way of tours, rallies, etc. The Grants Pass area provides a plethora of opportunities for enjoyment. We have picked out a few for you to enjoy that you should seriously look at as self-guided tours. Since we do not have time to guide every interesting tour, you will find a guide to do the tour by yourselves or with your friends. Oregon was the destination of the Oregon Trail and most people do not know that one of those trails came from California north to Portland. It is called the Applegate Trail. In your Registration packet you will find guides to these various routes. We encourage you to take advantage of these Great Healey roads and things to see. Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God’s omnipotence did not extend to God’s kids. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing he said was, “Don’t!” “Don’t what?” Adam replied. “Don’t eat the forbidden fruit,” God said. “Forbidden fruit? We got forbidden fruit? Hey, Eve...we got forbidden fruit!” “No way!” “Yes way!” “Don’t eat that fruit!” said God. “Why?” “Because I am your Father and I said so!” said God (wondering why He hadn’t stopped after making the elephants). A few minutes later God saw His kids having an apple break and was angry. “Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?” the First Parent asked. “Uh huh, “ Adam replied. “Then why did you?” “I dunno” Eve answered. “She started it!” Adam said. “Did not!” “Did too!” “DID NOT!!” Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never changed. But there is reassurance in this story. If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give them wisdom and they haven’t taken it, don’t be hard on yourself. If God had trouble handling children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?
He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the sand, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean. When near enough he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?” The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.” “I guess I should have asked, ‘Why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?’” “The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in they’ll die.” “But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”
Advice for the day: If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle: Take two and keep away from the children.
