Editor’s note: Some information or dates may change after originally published. Check the calendar each month for current information.

June 9, 2001 Saturday, June 9th, we will meet at McDonalds in Junction City at 12:30 with the tour starting at 1PM. Turn off of I-5 at Albany on Exit 216 or 209 for a nice drive down old Hiway 99 to Junction City. We are going to repeat a visit to Tenold and Karen Peterson’s hand crafted showplace home that we visited in June of 1998. Look back at the June 1998 issue of HNW for the story of the visit. Tenold and Karen are master craftsmen in art and sculpture, and their house is a showplace for their talents. You have to see it to believe it. Tenold has a beautifully modified Jaguar XK150 Drophead and his current project is a 1940 Packard 4 door sedan that he is converting into a woody wagon. If you missed this tour three years ago try to make it this time. You won’t be sorry. If you miss the start of the tour call Tenold at 541998-2750 for directions. The second stop on the tour will be led by Joe Dickey in his newly restored Bugeye to his father’s home. His dad builds miniature V8 engines that actually start up and run on gasoline. From there we will tour back roads to the home of John and Shirley Wilson and Healey Lane Restorations. The meeting will be around 4PM followed by a Bar B Q and refreshments for $5 per person. Wilson’s address is 37141 Parsons Creek Road, Marcola, OR. If you need more information call the Wilsons at 541-933-2016. July 14, 2001 The July Meeting will be held in conjunction with the Historic Races held at Portland International Raceway on July 14 & 15. We must order tickets as a group. Each car entered costs $30 and includes admission tickets for the driver and a guest. Additional guest tickets are $20 each. See next page for more information. Let’s have a big Healey turnout!

President’s Message

Membership Report

June president’s message

June Birthdays

May’s outing had “Chamber of Commerce” kind of weather and the Healey tour was enjoyed by all, about 22 Healeys and 5 BJ9s. It was fun to eat, do some scenic Healey driving, site seeing and chatting at the covered bridge rest stops. I am sure most of us have a picture or two for our albums with our Healeys and a covered bridge in the background. Thanks to Norm Simpson and Larry Emerson for organizing the day. A super time was had by all.

In reflecting back on my membership in the AHCO a number of things surface for me. First, it seems to be one of the most active and best clubs on the coast and for that matter in the US. In my role as an officer, on numerous occasions, various advertisers and other club members have made a point of mentioning this to me. The most common theme has been that the club is so active, that plans include everyone who wants to participate. All the members seem to really enjoy their cars, are helpful, and have developed many friendships over the years. ACHO is unique because of its members and their willingness to be involved. As we all know, the key to a successful club is broad and active participation. This brings me to the main theme of this message. It may seem early but it is time to begin the process of finding members to volunteer for officer’s positions for next year. The elections are held in September and the ballots will be mailed out in August. A strong club depends on old and new volunteers. I have a simple request for all members. Begin to think about people who would be good officers. If you are a past officer, seek out a member who hasn’t been an officer or hasn’t been one recently. Discuss the positions and encourage their participation. If a past officer, give consideration to running again. Remember, the offices of Membership, Activities, Editor, and Regalia can be held by couples. Please give it some thought. I wish you the very best of motoring

Healey Owners’ Bragging Rights During the covered bridge tour Tom Santee offered an idea for Austin Healey owners to submit entries for records in a variety of categories. As he explains, the newsletter for The Vintage Triumph Register club, called “The English Channel”, has been running a column called “Guinness Beer of Triumph Records.” Some of the categories include most operating Triumphs, longest trip in a Triumph, owner of the oldest Triumph, longest Triumph original owner, etc. Bragging rights in similar Healey related, and perhaps other, categories could be great fun to read. We could include ‘the most operating Healeys, longest restoration project, year when acquiring your first Healey, most driving competitions won in a Healey’, and so on. If you have bragging rights in a category not listed here, name it and send in your entry. Who knows, we may even keep track and show some sort of perverse recognition to the “winners” someday. “Healey Enthusiats’ Multiple Records Of Iffy Distinction”, HEMROID for short, will be strictly for fun without profit. Send in an entry. Let’s see who the real record holders are. Here is Tom Santee’s entry:

COVERED BRIDGE TOUR SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2001 By Bob Bollinger It was a beautiful day for a Healey tour, sunny skies we get everyone in gear 20 to 30 minutes after the start with temperatures in the low 70’s all day. The early time. However, Larry and Norm got 22 Healey’s and a birds met at Denny’s in Salem for breakfast while the few BJ9’s rolling right at 10:30 leaving our newest memrest of us showed up shortly after 10 O’clock. Normally bers Jerry and Veronika Walton behind searching for a gas station. Fortunately, they had the tour instructions and caught up with us a short time later. Our first stop was at the home of Gene and Edie Tipsword’s house. Gene is an artist who creates and sculptures by welding dissimilar metals. He has also restored over 43 Austin Healeys and Jaguars. He was in the final stages of a Florida Green Healey. It appears he painted the barn with the left over paint. Or maybe the barn came first and the Healey was painted with green exterior latex. Who knows? Both Healey and barn looked great. Our next stop was just after passing through Gilkey covered bridge. Pictures were taken of the bridge and a frisky horse and we were soon on our way again toward Scio and the Homestyle Family Restaurant for a cinnamon roll and coffee. From there we preceded to the Larwood covered bridge, which crosses the Crabtree

We minded our manners, took a few more pictures and were on our way. After three more covered bridges and some beautiful countryside we ended the tour at La Estrellita Restaurant adjacent to the Santiam Golf Club in Stayton where we held our meeting and enjoyed some good Mexican food. Thanks again Larry, Marie and Norm for a great tour.

John and His HealeysAn Infatuation Story by John Rueter Some time in the early fifties my wife and I were at a church seminar in Tacoma where one of the other attendees had a new, silver-blue Austin Healey 100-4. I attained an instant hate for him, in spite of the church credo. Then he smiled, adjusted his fine leather gloves and spoke of how his Healey would cruise all day at 100 miles an hour, and I hated him even more, in spite of the church credo. Betty said, “John would like one of those.” And I hated him more, in spite of the church credo.
