President’s Message

Membership Report

by Allan Gross The Healey international meet next year is called Open Roads 2002. If you attended the last two AHCO functions you had a chance to see THE OPEN ROADS OfOregon. I just checked my odometer this morning and was surprised that I had logged 1126 miles of fun in the countryside of Oregon the past two weeks. The initial mileage came from attending the Rendezvous 2001 in Grants Pass. It was great fun, a lot of socializing, jet boat river trip, showing off our cars, and a fun rally. It was just a good old fashion Healey gathering that all enjoyed. Thanks to Bill and his able volunteers. It was a profitable adventure for our club as you will read elsewhere in the newsletter. The last miles were logged at our August Club meeting. The Monaco’s and Gowan’s entertained us with a fun rally (at least for the participants, I think Tom and Chuck were wondering who the drivers and navigators were). It ended at the Monaco’s in Seaside with a very tasty Hawaiian meal. We even had entertainment. Just ask Leon to demonstrate his dancing. It was fun to be able to see such beautiful sites… makes driving the Healey special. Nomination Update and Officer Elections Update. I was informed after the meeting that our nomination process must span two meetings before the election. Therefore, nominations will still be taken at the September meeting with the election occurring at the October meeting. The ballot is filling out nicely (current nominations are shown elsewhere in this newsletter) but we still need volunteers for a number of officer positions. Nominations can be taken and are welcomed for all positions. Watch for the 2002 ballot in the October newsletter. I wish you the very best of Healey motoring Allan

be possible to set up on Saturday night. Under new business, the first item on the agenda was the 2002 NW Meet which will be hosted by the Oregon club. We need to make a decision as to where the event will take place so we can announce it at this year’s NW Meet. Some suggestions included Kahneetah, Inn at the Mountain in Welches, Sun River, Eagle Crest, Inn at the Seventh Mountain in Bend and Hood River. Considerations will include room availability and cost. Allan will check into some costs and we will try to make a decision at the September meeting. Norm Simpson volunteered to chair the event. Thank you Norm! Nominations were the second item on the agenda. Nominations were opened and results were as follows. President: Bill Massey Vice President: Larry Emerson Secretary: no nominations yet Treasurer: Leon Hart, Pat Bolton Membership: Norm Simpson, Skip Monaco Club Coordinator: Bill Bolton Editor: Terry Hellickson Regalia: no nominations yet Advertising: Gary and Dee Meyer Nominations will continue at the September meeting and elections will take place in October.

Editor’s Note

In a similar vein Tom Monaco announced that after five years on the ABFM committee, he will not be doing so for next year. We have until February to select a new representative for this important position. Tom is willing to train that person.

Due to the short interval between the August and September meetings, coverage of the August meet will be delayed until September. I apologize for this delay and promise not to do it again until next year.

The last item to be discussed under new business was reported by Bill Bolton. A Rendezvous Council has been formed to make the decisions for where and when and who will be responsible for what on future Rendezvous events. The idea is to spread the responsibilities out over more clubs. Rendezvous 2003 is still not decided. Karen Morrison of the British Columbia Club has volunteered to chair the 2003 event. It has been decided that it will be in the Eureka area of California. Bill has volunteered to work with Karen to find a venue for the meet. Other clubs will be asked to help with different aspects of the meet. There will be another Council meeting at the 2002 meet to update on 2003 and talk about 2004 and 2005. 2005 might conceivably be combined with the Texas

Roundup hosted by the North Texas Club. The Council meetings are open meetings and anyone is welcome, but each club is expected to have an official representative at the meeting speaking for that club. We had approved sending a rep to this at the beginning of this year and must now make sure we identify a person for this responsibility before the Tahoe meet. Bill also asked permission to send out the financial results of the 2001 meet to the various clubs to show them the possible profits that can be made by hosting a Rendezvous meet. This would go to the president of the clubs.

Rendezvous At The River by Terry Hellickson Healey Rendezvous 2001 is now in the record books. go their separate ways for dinner and a night’s rest. But those who attended will remember this event for many years to come. Enough activities to keep boredom far away, there still was plenty of time to kick back, relax and socialize, all with our Healeys providing a colorful backdrop. Rendezvous 2001 was a well-organized, enjoyable event from any angle.

Tuesday dawned clear and warm, the Rogue River beckoning. After breakfast the line at the jet boat dock began to form. Anticipation on all faces, the boats pulled up to the dock and began loading. Two full boats of intrepid Healey enthusiasts charged off down-river amid curtains of spray and screeches of delight. Hellgate canyon provides spectacular scenery as the jet boats negotiate rapids, shallows and eddies, along with some spins and more spray, en-route to the BBQ lunch feast. After lunch everyone re-boarded the boats for the wild and, depending on seating location, wet trip up-river to the Inn. No one was left wanting. Then it was back to the Arrival on Monday greeted a weary traveler with a grati- Healey Social Lot for more socializing into the evening. fying sight. Judging would length. All together, about 100 Sprites, 100-4s, -6s and 3000s, along with a couple of Jensen Healeys gathered to enjoy the camaraderie. New and old acquaintances were found at the icebreaker social on the lower deck of the Riverside Inn restaurant. Jet boats returned from down-river during the socializing, whetting expectations of Tuesday morning. All too soon it was time for all to

Earl and Jo Ann Yarnal seem to have a devious streak. They designed the rally to run simultaneously in opposing directions and with different instructions, making it unwise to follow the preceding car. The rally route took participants to Jacksonville, Wolf Creek, Galice, historical sights and past much spectacular scenery. ers all loved them dearly. After much deliberation, balloting, picture taking and socializing the catered BBQ started. A choice of ribs or chicken, potatoes, corn on the cob, salads, fruit and rolls guaranteed no one would go hungry, and no one did. And for those not yet stuffed, there was a choice of peach or berry cobbler for dessert. After the feast the popular choice and rally awards were presented, followed by recognition of the Healey Rendezvous 2001 organizers and volunteers. To cap off the day’s activities John Sprinzel and Margo Healey each gave short, entertaining, and humorous, talks relating their own perspectives on racing and rallying Healeys. Thank you John and 16

Healey Northwest

Margo for your insightful and enjoyable recollections! All too soon the festivities came to an end. It was time to return to the Healey Social Lot (actually, the Riverside Inn parking lot, but Healeys still commanded it), more refreshments and socializing. Some good-byes were said as some long distance travelers prepared for an evening or early morning departure. Friday morning saw the Healey Social Lot thinning substantially, but there were still small pockets of socializing scattered about. Those dedicated enthusiasts hold out to the bitter end. Final farewells and ‘see you next… (year, month, or weekend…fill in the blank)’, or wherever our paths may cross again, were spoken as Healeys snarled off into the forested mountains. And what was all that socializing about? You’ll just have to attend the unext Healey function and find out! September 2001

Thanks, Star Bright by Walt Harrison There are a number of things one can do to make a classic car stand out and be noticed. Washing, vacuuming and glass cleaner are the easiest ways. But, having the chrome and bright work polished can really bring out your vehicle. I recently had the windscreen glass replaced, and while the frame was off of the Sprite I had the windscreen supports buffed up. Once done the rest of the cockpit looked bland, so I looked through the club newsletter for someone who does chrome and polishing. I sent the aluminum cockpit surround pieces out to get polished to Star Bright, of Mulino, Oregon. Wow! What a difference it made in the overall appearance. I want to thank Star Bright for a job well done, and to emphasize the value of club newsletters. Guess I’ll be getting the bumpers redone next.
