February 10, 2001 Saturday, 12:30 PM The February meeting will be a tour of the Pearson Air Museum at Pearson Airpark in Vancouver, WA (changed from proposed function due to space limitations). Special display parking will be provided for those who bring their Healeys. Group rates for AHCO members will be $3 per person. The tour will last about one hour with time afterwards to look at exhibits and prowl the gift shop. Weather permitting, a scenic tour to Forest Grove will transport everyone to the Grand Lodge for the meeting and optional dinner (if weather doesn’t cooperate we will navigate the freeway westward). Rooms are available for anyone wishing to stay over. Directions to the Pearson Air Museum: I-5 to Exit 1C to the second stop light. Turn right and go to the second stop sign. Turn right and go past the main entrance to the second entrance on the left. Turn left into the airport apron where a display area for Healeys will be provided.

Other Car Events 2001 AutoJumble April 29, 2001 The annual All British Swap Meet will be held on the last Sunday of April, 2001. Set the day aside for stocking up on parts and paraphernalia for or about your Healey. Stay tuned for more information. 2001 Portland Swap Meet May 4 - 6, 2001 The 37th annual (almost) “Always In April” Portland Swap Meet will be held Friday through Sunday, May 4, 5 and 6, 2001. The dates are in May this year due to the new building at the Expo Center not being ready in time. But all the same attractions will be there. Best of all, the dates don’t conflict with a Healey Club meeting this year. Hours are 7AM to 6PM Friday and Saturday, 8AM to 1PM on Sunday. Admission is $5 per day Friday and Saturday, $3 on Sunday. The place is the Expo Center at 2060 N. Marine Drive, Portland, Oregon. Come on out and find everything you haven’t been looking for!

The meet celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first Austin-Healey, the 100, and the popularity and longevity of all Austin-Healeys, AustinHealey Sprites and Jensen-Healeys, as well as all Healeys built prior to 1952. February Membership: The renewal period for 2001 memberships is almost over. Renewals must be in by the end of February to insure that you will be included in the new roster. I plan to get the material to the printer the first week of March, so please don’t delay too long. Waiting will also mean you would miss the newsletters. Carbs and Pumps and Gas‌Oh My! By Jerry Klinger The January meeting of the Austin Healey Club of Or- onstration to reveal the secrets held within. The mysterious meter valve adjustments were talked about. Some people are known to even use a stethoscope to aid in this adjustment. Bill uses some small metal rods that resemble a water witch design for his adjustments. The points and spark plugs need to be in good condition and the ignition properly timed. All is for naught if these are not in excellent working condition.
With the carburetors in pieces it was explained to us not to try interchanging parts and pieces. The tolerances on some of these parts are extremely close and are matchfit at the factory. Mismatching them can lead to not being able to make adjustments or, possibly, extensive damage.

The electric fuel pump that ticks like a clock (or is it a bomb?) to supply fuel from the tank to the engine was looked at. Bill disassembled a pump and explained that most of the problems occur with the points. They are somewhat similar to the ignition points in our distributor but are often overlooked during regular maintenance. If these points are occasionally maintained by cleaning, or replacing them when worn, most fuel pump problems can be virtually eliminated. For those who like to pound on the bulkhead or whack the fuel pump with a knock-off hammer please forget about this maintenance. Some interesting stories were brought up that have occurred with carburetion

problems and the almost mythical way that was thought up to solve these troubles and at least limp home. Bill had a soft plug in his intake manifold blow out resulting in so lean a mixture the engine wouldn’t run. He was able to temporarily plug the hole with a Thermos bottle cork. Doug Auburg had a hole
check out the entire MiniMotors shop. There were a large number of vehicles in various states of repair. There were three big Healeys inside, with a 100-4 on the rotisserie so the entire undercarriage could be observed. Just checking out all the MGs, Sprites and big Healeys could have been an afternoon of enjoyment by itself. Our thanks go out to Rex and Bill and all the others involved to make this tech session informative and enjoyable.

Santa In A Red Nosed Healey by Skip Monaco
It was a typical day in mid December with gray skies and a little drizzle, but our spirits would not be dampened. Many members from the Portland metro area converged at the Red Cross parking lot for our second annual giftgiving trek to the Emanuel Child Life Center in north Portland. Folks arrived with Healeys and non-Healeys alike. Some who drove sports cars had their soft tops down, and many others had the tops on...you know - just in case. The group leaving from the Monaco’s was led by member Dr. Jeff Brown (on staff at Emanuel Hospital) and his brother-in-law, Ted Neal. Thank heavens the rain stayed in the clouds and we stayed dry until we arrived at the Hospital.

Having done this before, we knew to expect lots of commotion going on at the big Christmas party. This year in addition to Santa and his helpers, these special sick children & their families once again enjoyed our Healeys, the Portland Police car and two Portland Fire Trucks (one was a hook & ladder style), lots of activities, food and gifts galore. ball hoop...you know those great big things that you see in many driveways. Once again, thanks to the generosity of Healey Club members and our friends at Target, we were able to supply it for them. In addition, another 102 lovely gifts were dispersed by Santa on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day to children who were unable to be home with their families - even for a few hours. Indeed we made a difference...

Oh, back to the outset of this jaunt and the folks who had their soft tops down and were calling some of us “wimps” for having ours up (you know who you are)......well surprise, surprise! We had a proverbial downpour on the way home. ‘Nuf said.
