August meeting -Saturday 11th, 2001 RALLY ACROSS THE RIVER II We’ll meet at 10 a.m. at milepost 65 on the Sunset Hwy. (26). Go north past the service station on the right into the church parking lot. For those of you who came with us last year, this is the same meeting place as last year. First car out at 10:30 a.m. We’ll have approx. 3.5 hours to tour/rally until we end up at Monaco’s beach house in Seaside (milepost 22 on hwy. 101). Our monthly meeting and dinner will follow the awards ceremony. Do you speak Hawaiian? Do you own a Hawaiian shirt? How about a hula skirt, a mumu or a coconut hat? Bring any & all Hawaiian items you can find (yes, even an old Don Ho record) to the Hawaiian feast prepared by Barbara Gowan & Skip Monaco which follows the rally. This year there will be a $5 charge for each attendee (please bring your own beverages). It would be nice if the gals had some sort of idea how many of you will be attending, so e-mail either of them, please, by August 1st. For those of you who came to the Mexican fiesta last year, you know it was a great time for fun, food, friends, and - oh yes, those beautiful cars! So, mark your calendar for the 11th of August, tune up ‘ol Betsy and pick your favorite navigator to join us for the Rally Across the River II. Margot Healey will be attending the August meet at Seaside. She is a Life Time member of our Club and eager to see all of her friends again. She might even be willing to ride as navigator for someone taking the rally. She has ridden in every one of the Healey prototypes, mostly with Geoff. Ask her about them. Sat. August 18, 2001 Special Healey Club event: Sat. August 18th we will be making our 2nd annual trip to Jasper Mountain to see our ‘special kids’. This year they have requested archery equipment, so if any of you have good, used equipment that you no longer need, they could certainly put it to good use. The Club will also get them some brand new equipment for this same sport. For those of you who would like to join us for lunch, we will meet at Spencer’s Brew Pub in North Springfield at u August 2001

Hub Hub-Bub by Tom Monaco Here I am on that box again, wine box that is. This time it’s hubsbub. On last year’s trip to the NW Meet in Victoria (it was grand) someone in the group was slowed down by having to change a tyre. I stopped to assist, but was just a little late. As he beat the knock-off on with 5 or 6 hard blows, I wondered if he had ever done this before now. Two days later I was again behind this driver on a tour around Victoria and I noticed that his right rear tyre had a noticeable wobble. The same tyre tthat he had previously changed. When we stopped I told him of my observations. He immediately got out the old hammer and again began beating the poor knockoff. Hmmmm I said, time for a lesson. Whenever you have the opportunity to change a wire wheel on a hub, here’s how you do it. First, do it regularly. Once a year is best, even if the tyre is not flat. Check the hub on the car. It should not be sharp in any way. Originally it looked like a gear. Please excuse the art work.

The mating surface of the wheel should be the same configuration. If it is sharp it should be replaced. One of the improvements made by the AH factory was to change the hub threads from 12 tpi (threads per inch) to 8 tpi in 1964. If you are faced with replacing a hub please use the 8 t.p.i. hub. It is fully interchangeable with the early hub on the rear only. For the front you must keep the threads you have. There are many differences - too many to list here. However, most hubs are worn on the rear rather than the front. So why, you ask, did the factory do this? Better yet, why should I do it? After all it means buying a new knocker too. Well here you go. A fine thread hub (or bolt) stretches more with the same amount of pressure. An example for the novice...a 7/16 inch fine thread bolt will take a torque (read ‘pressure’) of 70 lbs before it distorts (read ‘stretch’). The same diameter bolt with a close thread will take 10-20% more pressure before distorting. Let’s bring this closer to Austin Healey hubs. A fine thread hub (12 tpi) takes three strikes of a hammer by John Rueter (165 lbs) to be tight while a coarse thread hub (8 tpi) takes three strikes by Bert Hand (220 lbs) to be tight. Now here’s a thing to think about. If you only strike your knock-off once (while the car is on the ground) and drive forward 300 feet, it will be tight. Also, if you drive in reverse for 2.5 miles after Bert banged on your knock-offs, they would fall off. This message for Bert only (Bert, this is not a negative spin on your banging ability.) Please don’t forget your knock-offs are directional and because of this they are self-tightening. There is absolutely no reason to hit them repeatedly. To do so only damages the thread and makes your arm sore. More on these fine English appliances later. Happy Healeying!

10TH Annual Zupan’s Historic Races By Jon Hoisington The weather was perfect for the Historic races this year! There was a fantastic turn out of cars, drivers, and spectators. This year the significant racing group selected as the feature group was the rare historic GTP cars presented by Specialty Cars and Bonhams and Brooks.

These GTP’s are very unusual to be racing in our area and they were quite fun to watch! Because of this car’s presentation and technology some say that these cars are one of the best classes to watch at the races!!

with books, models, art and collectibles there was a great selection of photographs. This is an area I could have really spent some time and money in. I saw some great photo’s of all types of cars but especially the Healeys. There were several unbelievable acAt this years races there was much more to do than just tion photo’s! In the Hot Rod corral there were over 200 watch the races…….You could visit craft alley which cars displayed. I picked the car of my dreams there and displayed a wide range of what I call “clutter crap!”. Baxter auto parts Vendor Midway area was great. Along

it was even for sale! Unfortunately, I don’t have a spare $112,500.00 laying around! There were over 650 collector cars displayed between 31 flavors. Sadly, of all 650 cars there were only about 25 Healey’s. But they were the best looking cars on the field! Across the Goodyear bridge to the Pit Paddock you enter the family zone. There were several activities for

the kids and while the kids are climbing the rock wall, jumping in the castle, and riding go-carts Dads can watch the remote control cars race. While I was watching, a RC car was clocked at 99 miles per hour! Also near the family zone was the Cars for sale section Here again I found several cars that I could “live with”, the money thing was once again the only thing holding me back! The racers’ “pit” is one of the best areas to tour while at the races. Every year I am amazed at the amount of money that is invested in these guys’ “hobby”! Each year the trailers and motor homes are bigger and better then the year before! Most of the drivers are from Oregon, Washington, California, and BC. I was surprised to see drivers come from as far as Colorado and Texas. Overall I would rate the Antique Car Races a perfect 10! I look forward to next year!
