Individuals need not own a Healey to join nor is membership restricted to any regional, national or continental boundaries. Members are encouraged to participate in all Club activities. Winter activities are normally indoor technical sessions or social events. Summer activities are normally outdoors involving tours and car events. Calendar year memberships are available in person at any meeting or by mail: $25.00 per individual or couple (add $10.00 for international mail). April 14, 2001 10:30AM Ladies & Gentlemen…..Start You Engines !!!! For the April meeting Kim and Missie Young have organized a tour in Clark County, Washington. We will meet at the 1st Independent Bank parking lot near the Clark County Fairgrounds off of I-5 at Exit 9. We will be leaving at 11:00 A.M. … so arrive early to get information and a map of our tour. If you miss us at 11:00 you can catch up at our first stop. We will turn left out of the Bank parking on Delfel Rd. Turn right on NW 179th, go under the Freeway to N.E. 10th. Turn left, go 3 miles north, then turn left to the Allen Sherman House @ 23100 N.E. 10th. We will stop here to enjoy a guided tour of the Antique Steam Engine Museum. We will then proceed on the tour that will take us on the back roads where we will have plenty of places to stop. We will take in the scenery along the Lewis River, through areas around LaCenter, and eventually along the Washougal River. We will finally end up in Camas and follow SR 14 to Washougal for a late lunch at Heller’s Restaurant @ 1834 ’E’ St. Washougal, Wa. Ph. No. 360-835-2488. (The menu has many reasonably priced menu selections including hot sandwiches, hamburgers, and salads). The membership meeting will follow lunch at the restaurant. Other Car Events 2001 AutoJumble April 29, 2001 7AM to 3PM The 5th annual All British Swap Meet will be held on the last Sunday of April, 2001. This event is inexpensive for exhibitors and free for buyers (not your purchases, just admission). The focus is on British car stuff. As before, the location is in the Montgomery Park parking structure for shelter in case of rain (what? in Oregon in April? c’mon!). Set the day aside for stocking up on parts and paraphernalia for or about your Healey. To get there from I-5 take I-405 to Route 30 - St. Helens - NW Industrial Area exit. Follow signs to Vaughn St., turn right on NW 27th. Enter parking lot from 27th. If you need more info contact Tim Foren at 503-287-2024. 2001 Portland Swap Meet May 4 - 6, 2001 The 37th annual (almost) “Always In April” Portland Swap Meet will be held Friday through Sunday, May 4, 5 and 6, 2001. The dates are in May this year due to the new building at the Expo Center not being ready in time. But all the same attractions will be there. Best of all, the dates don’t conflict with a Healey Club meeting this year. Hours are 7AM to 6PM Friday and Saturday, 8AM to 1PM on Sunday. Admission is $5 per day Friday and Saturday, $3 on Sunday. The place is the Expo Center at 2060 N. Marine Drive, Portland, Oregon. Come on out and find everything you haven’t been looking for! VRC of BC Historic Races May 26 - 27, 2001 Vintage racing in British Columbia. Races to be held at Mission, BC Canada. Portland Historic Races July 13 - 15, 2001 Plan on catching the excitement, duels and grudge racing at Portland International Raceway as the SOVREN racing schedule continues. Lots of British racers, especially Healeys, will be on the track for your enjoyment. Get pre-registered and bring your Healey to the corral to get your parade lap around PIR. The July AHCO meeting will be held on Saturday after the races. Don’t miss this one. More information will be posted as it’s available. Forest Grove Concours D’Elegance July 15, 2001 The annual Forest Grove Concours D’Elegance will be held on Sunday, July 15 amongst the trees on the beautiful Pacific University campus in Forest Grove. Participants will be invited to Saturday evening festivities as well. For those with collectable vehicles for sale, a corral will be available for a small fee. Contact the Forest Grove Rotary for more details. Healey Rendezvous 2001 July 30 - August 3, 2001 Healey Rendezvous 2001 will be July 30th - August 3rd, 2001 at Riverside Resort in Grants Pass, OR, site of the Geoff Healey Memorial. This event is hosted by the Austin Healey Club of Oregon and sponsored by AHCUSA. Accommodations will be $86 plus tax with a river view or $69 without a view. It was neat to see more of us drive our Healey’s to the last monthly meeting. The weather was far from ideal but it seems we are all eager to get out and drive. Mary and I experienced a little dampness with our top down. She asked me why are we doing this? We don’t even get points any more! The tech session at the March meeting was great. It was both informative and held everyone’s interest. It was presented in a fun and understandable fashion. Thanks to Richard and Tom and we all really enjoyed the personal tidbits you both added. A special thanks to British Auto Works as our hosts and for their year round support of our club. After what I am sure were numerous phone calls and some anxious moments by Leon, the activity calendar for the year is just about finalized. It looks to be a fun year with some new hosts (thanks very much) and events spread out to occur up and down the I-5 corridor. Super job Leon and thanks from all of us. Speaking of activities, don’t wait too long before you make your arrangements for Healey Rendezvous 2001 and NW Austin Healey meet in September. In regard to the NW meet I did receive an e-mail from Joyce Toms that the cost of the “experience package” provided by Banjo Creek farms is $27 and not $37. Check your March Healey Northwest for the details of the “experience package” I can’t wait for both events. I encourage all of you to share your love experiences with the Healey with all club members. Just write up your personal story and send it to Terry Hellickson. He took the group step by step through how the suspension is designed and how to improve and service the parts that need replacing as our cars age. Richard has been racing Healeys for a number of years so he was able to explain many modifications owners can

Richard Mayor and Tom Monaco teamed up to put on two excellent tech sessions covering suspension, tires and wheels. The weather was a little damp but several Healeyยนs with tops down and up made the trip out to the North Plains area. Forty or so people were in attendance to learn all the tricks and service items for fine tuning and repairing a Healeyยนs suspension.

Tom Monaco presented the second tech session covering proper tire sizes, wheels and the very important wire wheel hubs. Spoke wheels require proper care if one expects as smooth a ride as disk wheels. Worn splines, broken spokes, incorrect tire sizes can all add up to poor handling and major failures. Annual service to wheels and splines is recommended. The club meeting followed at about 3 P.M. after which about 30 people moved up the road to the well known Helvetia Tavern for their excellent food and beverage. Healey Northwest

Healey Heartbreak By Jerry Klinger On the evening of March 3rd, 2001, Saturday, just about midnight, in a quiet residential area east of Gresham, Oregon, something happened that strikes fear into everyone’s heart. The homeowner heard the smoke alarm in her house and went upstairs to see what was the matter.

The owner didn’t belong to any auto clubs so not many people knew about these vehicles. They have been declared a total loss by her insurance company. What a sad sight to see! Don’t let this happen to you.
Both Healeys have been in her family for years. The BN-6 was a Valentine’s Day present in 1977 from her husband. They already owned the BT-7 at that time.

Yeeeee Haaawwwwwwww!! We’ve got ignition!!! By Walt Harrison Pretty much like I planned, after installing new spark plugs and the re-charged battery the old Sprite sputtered to life, again. There were, however, a couple of minor bumps. I collected one seat bottom, the parts box, the battery, a gas can, jumper cables, the rebuilt speedometer, my new case of Craftsman tools, the manual and headed out to the garage. I rolled up the cover and pushed the Bugeye out into the light of day, first time in four months. I removed the old plugs, gapped the new ones and then discovered that the new tool case does not have a deep

Next stop is the detail shop to get it cleaned, washed and waxed. After that we’ll install the windscreen with the new glass and start to get the first shakedown miles dish spark plug socket. Bummer. So I hand tightened the new plugs, dropped in the battery, installed the speedometer and hooked up all the wires. I then turned the key, and was reassured to see the ignition light burning brightly and hear the whir of the petrol pump as the line and carburetors were filled. I really didn’t want to drive all the way home and back just for a spark plug socket, so guess what? Good old vice grips to the rescue. If you’re careful, you can get enough grip on the base of the plug and by flipping them over you can get enough successive swing to tighten the plugs; enough to start the engine anyway. of the season under our belt. True Lawyer Story A Charlotte NC man having purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars then insured them against fire, among other things. Within a month, he had smoked his entire stock-pile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the man filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the man stated the cigars were lost “in a series of small fires.” The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued...and won! In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the man held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be “unacceptable fire,” and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the man for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the “fires”. Now the best part: After the man cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the man was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and sentenced him to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This is a true story and was the first place winner in the recent Criminal Lawyers Darwin Award Contest.
