The Healey touring season got off to a great start in April with a great tour in Clark County and a stop at a steam engine museum that had everyone talking. The visit at the museum brought back memories for everyone. I particularly enjoyed seeing the Diamond T trucks as they brought back vivid memories of my dad and grandfather. The weather cooperated for us and we had beautiful vistas on our way to lunch. The views of Mt. St. Helens, Lucia falls and Healey type roads made the tour fun. If you were looking you even saw a camel or two (honest!). Thanks to Missie and Kim Young for arranging the fun outing.

Doug Auburg presented Regalia, Pat Barron, reported, that she is working on the proposal. Austin Healey Club USA does not have some new ideas for regalia. She may have a few things chapters like Austin Healey Club of America, but it does available at the upcoming British Auto Jumble on April offer a loose affiliation with other clubs. This coverage would be at no cost to our club and would cover all officers, committee people and volunteers who are also members of the USA club. The requirements are membership of all officers with the USA club. Any committee people or volunteers who wish to have coverage must also be members Membership of other members of our club is voluntary, but for every member of our club that is also a member of the USA club, AHCO will receive a five dollar rebate that can be done with as the club decides. The other requirement is that we exchange membership lists once a year with the USA club which gives both clubs a chance to solicit new members in their area who are members of the USA club but not ours or vice versa. We would also be asked to help with promotion by running a small ad in our newsletter for Austin Healey Club, USA and providing USA membership materials to our new members. The result of the executive meeting on this affiliation proposal was a unanimous yes. This affiliation is renewed on a annual basis and is of no cost other than the above stated requirements. The floor was opened up for discussion. There was concern about the use of the membership list by the USA club. Doug clarified that the club list is used only for solicitation for membership. The membership list of the USA club is sold to Healey related businesses, which at this time is only Healey Surgeons who send out a catalog once a year. Members can elect to be removed from that list by noting so on their application or renewal form. It was asked if there was other benefit of membership. Doug answered that the USA club provides seed money for the annual Rendezvous, puts out a nice monthly magazine and also puts out a membership/resource roster every year which has added a designation of members who would be willing to help out other members who might be traveling through their area. It was asked how many AHCO members were also members of the USA club. It was guessed maybe twenty percent. Which would equate to $100-150 rebated to the club. This would be retroactive for this year if we are affiliated. The plan is for the club to pay for officers’ memberships to insure the affiliation. Rebates could go toward this cost. Memberships cover both members for couples as is done by AHCO. It was asked if the affiliation would have any affect on our treasury. Doug answered that it has none nor does it have any affect on our by-laws or constitution unlike Austin Healey Club of America where chapter clubs by-laws must match. 8
Healey Northwest
u
The plan is not to vote this into our constitution or bylaws, but to vote on it on an annual basis. Jerry Barron made a motion that AHCO affiliate with Austin Healey Club USA and that AHCO pay the officer memberships required for the affiliation as long as that affiliation continues. It was seconded which raised some discussion as to the dues payment by the club. The reason for the club paying is to insure the affiliation, which requires officer membership, to be valid. It was asked if the only reason for the affiliation was the insurance, which was answered that the insurance could help more people be willing to get more involved in the club. A vote was taken and the motion was passed by large majority. Other new business was presented by Leon Hart who needed approval for $300 to reserve the facility for this years’ Christmas party which will again be held at the Shriner facility in Tualitan. It was approved unanimously. Although not brought up at the meeting Allan wanted it noted, as discussed at the executive meeting, that any solicitation for our membership list by outside organizations or businesses would be turned down. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

The Dreaded Gearbox Mount by Tom Monaco In the old ads for MG it always said,”Safety Fast”. I never did think those words made much sense, but then England and America have always been separated by a strange language barrier. Anyway, the purpose of this column is ‘Safety’. Maybe with Healeys my motto has always been ‘Safety First’.
When this apparatus is functioning properly it keeps the 800+ lb. drive train from launching itself through the radiator when the brakes are applied. Most often it is not working at all. This opinion was formed over the last few years while replacing over a dozen radiators. Here’s the problem. The engine leaks, the transmission leaks, and it all runs toward the rubber bushings. Unfortunately, rubber disintegrates when bathed in hot oil. We know this because in 1356 Alfred ‘The Terrible’ used to pour boiling oil over the sides of his castle when it was under attack by those awful rubber people of Lower Essex. They never made it up the ladder. The moral of the story is...if you have rubber bushings, even if they are only a few years old, you may only have a bunch of goo instead of a bushing. When you are replacing the bushings or the radiator and the bushings, be sure to check the tie rod. This is the undersized 3/8 rod which goes from the frame to the
Where to start has always been one of my problems. I usually let someone else start and then off I go - standing on my soapbox - for what seems like days, or until the wine runs out. Perhaps if we only stood on the wine box the sermons would be much shorter. Today my topic is the dreaded gearbox mount. Hidden inside the frame behind the transmission lurks another piece of British engineering wizardry - the gearbox mount. This consists of two bolts fixed perpendicular to each other. One goes through the gearbox (hence the name) and the other goes through the frame. Each one is surrounded by two rubber grommets or bushings. transmission. Look carefully at the threads on the rod to make sure that there are some left. Do NOT rethread a rod that has been stretched or otherwise damaged. This is NOT a solution, only the beginning of yet another problem. Check also that the frame mounting for this rod is free of damage. Thank Lucas you can now buy high quality heavy duty bushings that are not rubber and have a lifetime guarantee (the car - not yours). If you have questions about how to install these bushings easily and need more details of parts wear issues, don’t hesitate to call. Happy Healeying. Healey Northwest

CLARK COUNTY TOUR Saturday, April 14, 2001 By Gary Meyer We met in Vancouver Washington on a beautiful Healey sorted BJ9s. Our first stop was the steam engine muday. The assembled group, led by Kim and Missie Young, seum, known as SCHURMANS’ IRON RANCH. Rather our tour guides, consisted of a dozen Healeys and as- than a steam engine museum, this is a hobby gone wild!

A l a n Shurman owns a large machine shop which has funded this eclectic collection. Yes, there are steam engines of every kind and size imaginable. There are multiple buildings filled with tractors, cars, trucks, fire engines as well as a train caboose. The collection of items included: over a hundred bicycles, a model T, a model A, a fifty-five Thunderbird, a 34 Ford sedan, a 32 Ford Roadster, a Diamond T truck, a complete power generating station (this thing was big!), pedal cars, old signs, gas pumps, just too much. We’re talking acres of stuff. u(Continued on page 12...) May 2001 11

We stopped for a time at Lucia Falls for a short break to look at the falls and tour the facilities. George Koeber managed to have car trouble again! As usual there were many suggestions, but none of them worked. After at least one more stop to look under the hood (bonnet), George was able to make it to Heller’s in Washougal. After the meeting and lunch, George and Jaci headed for home with Jerry and Pat Barron following behind in their BJ9 ready to pick up any parts that might fall off.

WHAT WAS WRONG by George Koeber If you were on the tour April 14th you know that about and started down the other side, gaining speed as we half way thru our car developed a bad misfire and was went. backfiring something terrible. After the meeting and I was able to keep the speed up to about 40 mph until we reached the grade leading up to Terwilleger. Again,
our speed dropped to about 10 to 15 mph. Leon was still behind us and Jerry was behind him, running interference with his flashers on. You can’t imagine what it’s like to be going that slow with cars zipping by you at 60+ mph. WOW! We did finally make it home. Many thanks to all who helped at the impromptu tech sessions that I had along the tour route. The next day I replaced the distributor cap and spark plug wires. Now the car runs fine.
lunch Jaci and I decided we would try to make it home. So with Jerry and Pat Barron following behind we headed home. We hadn’t gone to far when Leon Hart fell in behind us and was a welcome site in our rear view mirror. As we approached the Interstate bridge we were really running poorly to say the least As we started the incline to the center span we had dropped down to 5 to 10 mph. I didn’t George must be really proud of his engine. Everywhere we went he think we would make it over the top. Somehow we did had to open the bonnet so people could see it. “The Buggy “ or 20 Years Between Healeys By Allan Gross Our first Healey came upon us quite by accident. Mary and I had moved to California from Madison, Wisconsin in the fall of 1969. I took a position at Hewlett Packard and Mary wasn’t working. This after she had taught school, put me through graduate school, and now was a stay at home dog sitter. I was going at full speed and Mary had just the opposite happen to her. Something needed to change. She decided she would like to get back to teaching or helping in a primary school. She
It became Mary’s (it would take 20 years before I got mine) commuter and after some weeks she was happy as could be in her sporty Healey. It took her a while to get used to it, however, as she did not know how to drive a stick shift. We made several trips to the Hewlett Packard parking lot and when she thought she had the knack, she took it to work. We lived about three stoplights from her school and for the first week, she just hoped to hit those lights green. I got to drive it on weekends and participated in a number of rallies. They were fun and of the TDS (Time, Distance, Speed) variety with slide rules (calculator wasn’t invented yet). When we adopted our 4-year-old daughter, she liked to ride in the back seat. She would refer to it as the “The Buggy” and off we would go. Yeah, I know, no seat belt, but those were the times back then and as unbelievable as it sounds now, we didn’t even worry about it.
The following entry occurred on February 6,1974…”Placed ad in local newspaper to sell the Healey”. We were moving to Idaho and didn’t think this would be a good second vehicle there (was good logic but…). This entry was followed the next day with “Healey sold for $2200”. That was as a sad day, but we did get more than we paid for it. I should have kept it along with the house we had in Santa Clara. Like most did just that which meant we needed another car. Over the years, Mary has kept a simply diary. I checked of us, that simply wasn’t an option. It was great fun some of her entries as they related to the Healey. The while it lasted and everyday was Healey weather. first entry will impress you about our Healey knowledge. July 11, 1971…”Went to look for an Austin Healey but couldn’t find a new one.” Gosh, I wonder why?
