I want to thank all of you who provided pictures and articles for Healey Northwest, your newsletter, in 2006. Don’t forget, there wouldn’t be a newsletter if it weren’t for your contributions.

Cover: Our cover this month features Larry and Debbie Haroun’s 1963 Austin Healey BJ7. The photo was taken by Larry in front of the Golumbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, OR on Father’s Day 2006.
In the new year, let’s have a bigger contribution from the ladies. Each year the Margot Healey award is given to the lady in the Club who makes the greatest literary contribution to the Club’s Healey Northwest. In 2006, this award was given to Jan Whittlesey for her fine contributions. It is my understanding that Margot Healey really wanted to see more contribution from the ladies. That is why she provided her antique tea pot to be used as a perpetual trophy. So let’s go gals, give me your best in 2007. Remember, it doesn’t have to be an article about our cars or events. Let’s see what you have. Along those same lines, I have received several unsolicited photographs for our front cover. That has been very much appreciated. Please continue to send those contribution. Drive your car to a scenic or interesting location and take several different photographs. Leave a little space around the car so I can fit it in the publication. Send me your photos in a high resolution and I will be pleased to use them on the cover. So, for now, Happy New Healey Year and keep those contributions coming.
Jack

January 13, 2007 – Tech. Session Meeting and tech session at the home of Richard Mayor, 1511 SW Broadway Drive, Portland. (503) 224-1260 (Do not confuse this information with the address in the club directory. That is Richard’s office address on NE Broadway) 1:00 P.M. The day will start in Richard’s shop with a showing of Richard’s last race as taken by his in-car camera. This is the race at PIR where Richard and the Corvette had a start to finish duel which resulted in Richard’s crash on the last lap. This is about a 25 minute film. 1:30 P.M. Following the film the tech session will begin (also in the shop). We will do a teardown of one of Richard’s 3000 race motors (the most trick) and the revealing of it’s many secrets. Richard will point out and explain all of those tricks that are not readily apparent. There will be many tips for those who simply want a better performing street Healey. 2:30 P.M. The meeting will take place in the house. For those who do not care for race motors, they can relax in the house during the tech session. 3:15 - 3:30 P.M. Following the meeting we will adjourn to the Buffolo Gap Saloon and Eatery, 6835 SW Macadam Ave., about 3 miles away and 1 3/4 miles south of the Ross Island bridge. There will be directions provided at the meeting. Directions to Richard’s home: Broadway Drive begins just after S.W. Broadway crosses over highway I-405. Be in the right hand lane and look for the large green sign that says “Broadway Drive” and “Counsel Crest”. Go through the traffic light and bear to the right, go up the hill 9/10th of a mile. “1511” is on the right side of the street. If you are coming from the North on I-405, take the 6th Avenue exit, turn right at the traffic light. This is the beginning of Broadway Drive.
January 2007
If you are coming from the South on I-405, take the 6th Avenue exit, immediately get into the far left lane and take the first left turn. Go one block and turn left onto Broadway. Get into the far right lane. At the 2nd traffic light bear to the right. This is the beginng of Broadway Drive. If you get lost, call Richard at (503) 224-1260. See you there! February 10, 2007 - Indoor Racing Ladies and gentlemen start your engines. The day will begin at the Sykart Indoor Racing at 8205 SW Hunziker Street in Tigard. The club did this a few years ago and had a good time. We will then retire to a nearby pub for the meeting and eats. More details and map in the February newsletter.
AHCO Activities in 2007 by Mark Schneider The year 2006 is nearly over. The Christmas party is history. I hope everyone enjoyed the dinner at the Eastmoreland Golf Club. Personally I thought the decorations and the holiday atmosphere of the room was pretty grand. Now we look forward to another year of activities. In case you missed it, the pivotal word in that last sentence was “we”. The AHCO needs the “we’s” to step up, volunteer to host a meeting, plan one, and make it happen. It is not difficult. It only takes a small amount of time. And, just think of how your fellow club members will hold you in high esteem. Not! But seriously, I am going to be asking for volunteers at the January meeting at Richard Mayor’s house and shop. Please be thinking about doing something new and different. Since I am asking you to take on this task of hosting a meeting let me tell you what is involved in doing this. First, think of something fun to do, then commit to doing it. Say to yourself, “Heck, I can do this.” And raise your hand when I ask for volunteers. If the excitement gets to be too much and you can’t wait until January 13, 2007, call me. We can take care of it on the phone right away. There are six components to hosting a meeting. They Healey Northwest
are: • Identify the event, e.g., arrange a visit to a local car collection, specialty car shop, tour the OMSI submarine, lead a road tour. • The next step is to plan the event carefully and in some detail. It is usually a good idea to actually go through the steps of your plan to see if what seemed like a killer idea really pans out, determine how much time it requires, check out the routes, road quality and parking, etc. • Once the fun part of the event is planned you will need to identify a location for the monthly business meeting. Many times the event location will have a meeting room that we can use. • Locate a nearby restaurant for the traditional late lunch or early dinner. This part is not an absolute requirement but many members seem to enjoy the camaraderie of a burger and a cold one after the event and business meeting. • Next, write up a short description of the plan for the newsletter. You’ll need to draft something and get it to the newsletter editor (Jack Jakobsen) two months before your month, and then again one month before your meeting month. The write up needs to describe the event, the location (including the street address), possibly a map or at least step-bystep directions of how to get to the place you have chosen. You will also need to develop an agenda for the day with the event start time, meeting time, lunch/dinner time. • Finally, arrange for one of the club members to write up a short summary of the day and again submit it to for the newsletter. Alternatively, you could write it up yourself. There now. See? That’s not hard. If you want to host a meeting and just can’t come up with an idea let me know and we can work up a plan together. Tentative Scheduled Activities: July – Historic Races and later in the month a picnic meeting. September – All British Field meet December – Christmas Party

Christmas Charity Auction Report
This Month in AHCO History
by Skip Monaco
by Jeff Mach
The Charity Committee team wishes to thank each and every Club member who attended our wonderful Christmas party, brought items for the auction and/or made purchases during the evening.
First, a request for some help from anyone who would like to rid yourself of, or loan the Club, some past issues of Healey Northwest. The Club library is missing nearly all of the 1997 and 1998 issues of Healey Northwest (at least I can’t seem to find them at the moment). So, if you’d like to donate those issues to the library or loan them to be scanned, please e-mail me at mach@toast.net or see me at an upcoming Club meeting. Thanks, and on to more great moments in AHCO history.
As attendees of our AHCO Christmas party on Dec. 9th saw, there were lots of members at the event and nearly all either brought items for the auction or made some dandy purchases. Once again this is an overwhelming gesture in support of the good work by our Club. Thru the years, we’ve been able to make donations to organizations in our region who are in need of our help. This year alone, the Oregon Food Bank ($500), our local Veterans Hospital ($500), Muscular Dystrophy Children’s summer camp ($500), Coffee Creek Correctional Women’s Program ($300), Albertina Kerr Art Therapy Center ($500), the Youth Automotive Center ($100), and our newest - Ronald McDonald House ($500) were greatful recipients. Two of these organizations, whose funding from the State has been severely cut, were especially appreciative for our continued support. Our contributions, which usually are in the form of goods, assists them in the continuation of helping children/families coming to them for help. So, how did we do? When Dee Meyer called the next day to give the ending total raised, all we could say was WOW...who would have known. $3685 was the dollar figure and that’s an enormous amount for such a small Club. The Charity Committee will gather soon after the first of the year and go over the usual number of issues. The first one will certainly be - how to parcel this out in order to do the most good. Also, as in years past, we’ll be going over the input we receive from Club members who actually attended the party. This way we get a true pulse of their take on the auction process, etc., thus doing away with guess-work. As hard as we try, we know that it’s not possible to please each and every one of you, but please know that we certainly give it our best effort. In the end, the evening was very succinctly summerized by one gentleman who said, “It was the perfect combination of having great auction items, a very good turn-out and the attendees willing to support continued good work.” Healey Northwest
As you might expect, January tends to be pretty quiet when it comes to outdoor sports car-related activities. Thirty years ago this month, little Healey-related activity was occurring outdoors. The Club was holding its monthly meetings at Luigi’s Pizza on North Interstate in Portland. Most of the January 1977 issue of Healey Northwest consisted of a reprinted article on collector car insurance. Planning was underway among the west coast Healey clubs to hold the 1977 West Coast Meet in Bend in early September. AHCO members also were planning events for the year. Among the suggested activities were an overnight trip to the beach, rallies, and a spring tour to Mt Rainier National Park to meet members of the BC Austin Healey Club. Although the Mt Rainier trip didn’t occur until the end of July, it began the tradition that has become today’s Northwest Meet. Somewhere along the way, camping was traded for the more comfortable venues enjoyed today. Twenty years ago, 1987 started with Bill Bolton hosting a Concours Forum in his garage. Bill and a few volunteers discussed the dos and don’ts of proper restoration of various Austin Healey models. Ten years ago this month, the AHCO started the new year by visiting the American Advertising Museum in Portland, followed by dinner at the Widmer Brothers Gasthouse. AHCO members were invited to bring their Austin Healey advertising memorabilia to the museum for display. In Healey Northwest, Tom Monaco discussed the decision of the Jaguar Club of Oregon giving up responsibility for entirely putting on the Portland All-British Field Meet after 20 years and solicited AHCO members’ views on whether the AHCO should participate in a coalition of British car clubs to carry on the task. Finally, Jack Jakobsen made his auspicious debut as editor of Healey Northwest.

Annual Christmas Party December 9, 2006 by Kymberly Randolph This year’s Austin Healey Club’s Annual Christmas Party was held at Eastmoreland Golf Club. Mark Schneider wowed us again and did a wonderful job organizing the event. The setting was warm and cozy, the decorations festive and we had a great turn out.
Silent Auction began at the onset with the winners being announced beginning at 7:00. The Oral Auction began as we finished up our dessert and coffee. Doug Auburg and Tom Monaco kept us all ‘bidding’ and laughing as auctioneers. They were assisted by Skip Monaco, Linda Adams, Jan Saxon and others. Skip did an excellent job of organizing these two charity events and the auction items were exceptional this year. Jan Saxon sold raffle tickets for a Christmas Bear and much to my surprise, I won!
We enjoyed a catered dinner of prime rib and turkey, live Christmas music and the Club’s bar was open for “Holiday Cheer”.
Throughout the evening, we enjoyed the keyboard music of Matt Burnett. It was a beautiful addition to our annual party as he played traditional Christmas songs in a contemporary manner. I believe everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you to everyone who contributed time, talent and auction items. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The evening began with mingling, the Healey Feely, and cruising the regalia and Charity Committee Auction tables. Jaci Koeber and Tammy Auburg had several tables of Regalia which included some new and exciting items. The selection was awesome and they were kept very busy with sales. There were multiple tables of items to be offered at auction. The Healey Northwest
