Well, here it is, the height of the of the raining season in Oregon and certainly not good Healey weather as shown by the number of Healeys other than John and Shirley’s at the February meeting. We do occasionally get a dry day here and there and this is the time we should give our cars a little exercise. The doctors say that we should all exercise and this goes for Healey’s too to keep all the moving parts working as we expect them to. So in between rain showers, bundle up, put the top down and hit the back roads. It will do wonders for that “cabin fever” feeling we all get this time of year.

Stephanie had a great idea for an article for the Healey Northwest. In fact, I was going to present the same thing in a President’s Message but she stole my thunder and I’m glad she did. How did your infatuation begin? You can read about my first experience further on in this issue. So let Stephanie hear from you along with pictures from those bygone days.
Thanks to all of you who have sent in your renewals. For those who haven’t gotten around to it, to make sure that you will be in the new roster and will continue to receive the newsletter, your renewal should be in no later than March 3, 2000. It will take a little while after that date to get the new books printed, but there will be no guarantees that late information will be included.
We have two ballots issues to be voted on in the next two up coming months. The first is the ballot on the constitution changes that appeared in the February issue of the HNW. Be sure to mark your ballot and return it prior to March 7, 2000 or bring it to the next general membership meeting on March 11. The other ballot issue is concerning Gary Meyer’s motion establishing a yearly Charity Fund. The motion was seconded at the February meeting and will appear in the March HNW along with a ballot so everyone can vote on the matter. Ballots will be counted at the April meeting. Hope you can all make the next meeting in Portland at Guy’s Interior Restorations. It should be extremely interesting especially for those who are planning to do some interior work in preparation for the good driving weather ahead.
We are happy to welcome Dick and Geri Lynch as new members. Dick is a civil engineer and Geri is a homemaker. They have a ’61 BN7 which is in many pieces and they are looking for inspiration to get it finished. At least several members should be able to sympathize with them. The Lynch’s have three children and eight grandchildren and enjoy camping, hunting, fishing- the outdoors in general. Dick and Geri Lynch 17598 SE Cook St. Milwaukie, OR 97267 503-659-9204

Editor’s Corner Some of you have expressed difficulty accessing the AHCO web page at recent meetings. Information I have found just lately indicates it may be due to your internet service. If your service is provided by America OnLine it is quite likely you either won’t be able to access the site at all, or some pages won’t display or will be corrupted. Unfortunately, this is not a problem with the AHCO web site. You will have similar problems with other sites and likely won’t have full access to the World Wide Web. If you know someone who is using a different internet service try looking at our site on their PC. If the problem persists let me know. Talk to me at the club meeting, call me or e-mail me. I’ll be happy to help where I can.

General Membership Meeting February 12, 2000 Minutes by Stephanie Hellickson The meeting was called to order 3:30 p.m. at the home of John and Shirley Wilson in Marcola, Oregon. Bob thanked John and Shirley for hosting the meeting which included a great chili feed for after the meeting. The planned tech session was canceled as the planned guest was unable to attend. The minutes of the January meeting were accepted as published in the February newsletter with the correction that the West Coast Meet, not the Northwest Meet has been re-named Healey Rendezvous. Treasurer, Gary Jackson, reported a beginning balance of $19,733.07 with an income of $2952.31, most of which was membership dues. Expenses amounted to $846.59, giving us an ending balance of $21,838.79. Membership, Mary Gross, reported she has sent out reminders to those members who have not yet renewed. These must be in by March 1st to be included in the new roster. Activities, Allan Gross, reported that the social coffee with John and Joy Healey would be held February 20th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Bill and Pat Bolton’s. The club has sanction this event, so people who want to drive their cars are welcome. March, which was still open will be hosted by Doug and Tammy Auburg and will be a tech session at Guy’s Interiors. Further information will be published in the March newsletter. The meeting for June is a planned tour to La Grande to the home of Helen Hector. A possibility is having it as a two day event because it is such a long drive and a repeat of a previous tour designed by Ellen’s late husband, Bob, could be included. This was a much enjoyed tour, with lots of interesting things to see along the way, for those who participated the first time. We would have a rendezvous in Central Oregon of a group from the south and a group from the north and then continue on to La Grande. Lodging is available for about $53 single and $57 double. Ellen is hoping that some of the members can fix the brakes on one of her cars. There is no one available in her area to work on Healeys. The other problem is the date; the original dates were the 10th and 11th. The problem is that this is graduation and there will be a lot of visitors and celebration going on. The proposal is to push it out to the 17th and 18th. The motion was made and passed. In regards to Rendezvous 200 in July, Allan did some research into alternative accommodations. He came up with a list of about 15-16 other places. High quote was $209 and a low of $88 before the10.9% tax, so the deal we are getting at Shilo is pretty good. More information plus the registration form for the meet will be in the March newsletter. Registration is $85 and includes two meals. There is an RV park not too far away. It was brought up that the April meeting, which is planned for the 8th conflicts with the big swap meet. A motion was made and passed to move the meeting to the15th contingent on whether Meyers are able to make that change. Terry will call them. Editor, Terry Hellickson, reported a typo in the last newsletter; the April meeting is the 8th not the 18th. He also brought up the potenHealey Northwest

tial for classifieds on the club web page. An added advantage here is that we can have photos to accompany ads. If we do use the web site for classified ads, should we open it up to non-members for a charge. After some discussion, including discussion as to if and what we should be charging for ads in the newsletter, a motion was made and passed to offer free classified ads on our web site for members only including our exchange clubs. Terry is working on establishing more links to other club web sites. Some people have been having trouble finding the web site with a standard search. According to Terry, if you enter Healey Oregon it will come right up at he top of the list. Advertising, Skip Monaco, reported that notices have gone out with the request that anyone wanting to place an ad must notify us by the 15th of the month. She working on getting more advertisers, including none car related ads from the businesses of club members. Club Coordinator, Bill Bolton, had nothing new to report Librarian, Doug Auburg, had nothing to report other than he is still looking for someone to take over the responsibility of the library. Regalia, Betty Hand, reported she had some regalia with her and that the monthly drawing would use peoples badges as there were no tickets available. The All British Field Committee has a new member; Doug Auburg is taking over Registration from Gary Meyer, who will now do Popular Choice. Tom Monaco will continue with Promotion and Advertising. More of the members of the other clubs that help put on this event get involved in the process because the committee position is rotated among the members. AHCO club members are welcome to attend the meetings to get an idea of what is involved in the production of this event. Under Old Business, the Cascade Club has decided not to have a special guest for Rendezvous 2000. As a result our club will not need to pay for bringing a guest to the meet. We were going to invite Jerry Coker. Nils Jensen, a member of the Cascade Club is looking for some lady members to do craft demonstrations. Interested members can contact Nils. They are also looking for some of the ladies to organize the Memorabilia Room which will have things from past West Coast Meets. If you can help, please contact Joyce Toms. Concerning Rendezvous 2001, the club will make a decision in March as to who will be the chairman . Bill Bolton has volunteered to chair the committee and Gary Jackson has volunteered to do the accounting, but we will leave it open to others until the March meeting. Possible sites include Klamath Falls, where a new convention center is being built, and Grants Pass which was the site of the first Northwest Meet and is near the Jeff Healey Memorial. Grants Pass has recently added public transportation and is within driving

Minutes, continued from page 7 .... distance of several places of interest. Several of the west coast clubs have expressed an interest in having the meet in grants Pass again. Bill Bolton again reiterated the idea of keeping the meet simple with no banquets or special events that use extra rooms and cost more money. We could have a people’s choice show and a picnic at the Jeff Healey Memorial. The Charitable Donations proposal received a second motion and will now be republished in the March newsletter for a vote. Results of voting on the changes to the constitution, also published in the February newsletter, will be delayed until the March meeting to allow more members to get their ballots in. Under New Business, a proposal was made that the club purchase a copy of the Austin Healey Guide to Historic Colors. This book costs $25; it is an excellent source and the motion passed easily.

by Nancy Santee Not many Healeys appear at winter meetings. Ours stays in its nice dry garage, too. So we decided to take the Triumph Stag (our other British car). It has roll up windows! It was a nice drive out into the valley to John and Shirley Wilson’s home. Approximately 32 members had arrived by the time the meeting started. There were a number of Healeys to view in various stages of restoration. Some members were gathered around them discussing the finer points of assembly or something. Other members looked at photo albums that were available. Most people had a good time catching up with the news from the others. We all enjoyed the delicious snacks prepared by Shirley. Many also appreciated the Golden Delicious apples brought by Kent Lambert. They really lived up to their name! I don’t know how we found room for the great chili and cornbread muffins that was available for dinner after the meeting. Thank you John and Shirley for another afternoon of great camaraderie and food!
The meeting was adjourned at 4:39 p.m. and everyone headed for the chili.

Official Ballot Should the Austin Healey Club of Oregon adopt the Charitable Donations Proposal as written:
AHCO CHARITABLE DONATIONS A Proposal by Gary Meyer
Proposal I make a motion that the Austin Healey Club of Oregon (AHCO) establish an annual Charity Fund that would be created using funds generated by sources such as the All British Field Meet, Raffles, Auction, etc. The annual contribution to be a minimum of $1,000 as long as the club treasury maintains a balance of $10,000. Surplus funds available as determined by the Executive Committee will be reported to the members and a vote taken whether or not to allocate funds in addition to the minimum $1,000.

Bring completed ballot to April 15, 2000 meeting in Oregon City or mail completed ballot to: Austin Healey Club of Oregon 82923 Bear Creek Road Creswell, OR 97426 Ballot must be received by April 11, 2000 to be counted.
The Charity I would suggest that all members have an opportunity to recommend charities to a 3 member appointed committee which in-turn would research the charities, make recommendations to the Executive Committee for further approval by the membership and administer the Charity Fund. Some ground rules would be as follows: The charity must be one recognized by the state of Oregon. AHCO should define how the donations are to be used. The charity must provide help to all in need regardless of race, creed, religious affiliation. Final choice of charities to be determined by a vote of the members (by ballot, published in the news letter). The donation is to be given for charitable purposes in the state of Oregon. The donation must be presented in a manner as to give maximum publicity exposure to the AHCO. The charity must be an efficient organization as determined by the Executive Committee.
Allocation of Funds Money surplus to the needs of the AHCO would be determined by the Executive Committee. If the club treasury falls below $10,000, the Executive Committee shall determine if and how much should be donated to charity. All funds to be dispensed within the calendar year.
Presentation of Donation The name of the charity and date, time and location of the gift will be published in the HNW no later than the month prior to the actual donation so that as many members as possible can participate in the presentation.
LOST TITLE Tim Foren of the Club T-MG AUTOJUMBLE reports finding a title of ownership for a Austin Healey. The title was found during cleanup after last year’s event. MEET OUR NEW ADVERTISERS
HOW MY INFATUATION BEGAN By Bob Bollinger During my senior year at college, a fraternity brother received a new white tri-carb for his birthday. I immediately fell in love, with the car that is. If you have never driven a Healey through the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania in the fall when the trees are in full color, you just haven’t lived. During the winter we made one such trip over a long weekend to attend the sports car races on frozen Naomi Lake. We arrived a day early to find the lake deserted yet the oval track was plowed in anticipation of the next day’s races. It was too inviting. As studded tires were unheard of back then, it took us a little to get up to a good speed. About the second time around on the oval ice we reached 50 MPH. On the back straightaway John said, “HOLD ON” and cranked the wheel hard left. Instantly, the snow-covered trees around the lake became a blur. After four 360’s we gently ended up in a snow bank at the far third turn. The races Sunday were fun but not as much as our icy trip the previous day. On spring break I asked my Father if I could get an Austin Healey. To my delight, he said, “Yes”. I told him there was a small matter of money, to which he replied that I now had a big problem. Thirtyone years later my dream was achieved when I found Gary and Dee Meyer’s BJ7 for sale in the Oregonian. And, as they say, “the rest is history”. Columbia Commercial Properties LLC Dave Brown Dave Brown had his first exposure to Healeys twenty years ago when he got a ride in his friend’s father’s 100S. He was infatuated by the Healey, a yearning that never went away. Three years ago Dave bought his own, first Healey from Tom Monaco and has been satisfying his infatuation ever since. Dave started his company, Columbia Commercial Properties, 3 years ago this March. He owns the company with a partner, Keenan Boyle. He has been in the commercial real estate business for 13 years, Keenan approximately 10 years. They have an office in Tigard and Vancouver, WA. Their company focuses on leasing and managing Industrial, Office, and Retail properties. They often are involved with projects from “the ground up”, assisting developers in their site plan options to design the most suitable facilities given the target market. They have been involved with properties as far away as Klamath Falls to Bend and Vancouver, WA. Their goals are to determine how to best add value to their client’s properties through professional leasing, sales and property management. If you are a tenant in a property and want impartial market information, or are considering expansion, Dave and Keenan represent tenants in all facets of lease negotiations with office, retail and industrial properties. If you have a specific need to lease or sell a commercial property they would welcome the opportunity to talk with you to determine how to best meet your goals.

British Wire Wheel has moved from to Watsonville, California. After starting as a hobby/business in 1977 out of his home in Aptos, CA, Bruce Erfer moved the business to Santa Cruz. In 1991 British Wire Wheel moved to the old Jaguar dealership facility where it has been located until the present. The business was purchased by Barry Nottoli in the mid ‘90s. The business has continually grown under Barry’s guidance until it has outgrown the Santa Cruz location. The new location in Watsonville should take the business well into the new millennium. As in the past, British car owners are welcome to visit British Wire Wheel at the new facility (20 minutes south of the old location). The new location will allow space for a greater number of specialty tires. The new inventory of OE tires will be one of the largest in the industry. As in the past, British Wire Wheel will not offer “sales”. Everyday low prices are generally the lowest in the industry.
Trident Enterprises-AMSOIL Products Terry and Stephanie Hellickson Terry and Stephanie Hellickson bought their first Healey together in 1970, before they were married. They have owned that same car ever since. Along the way they picked up two more Healeys, one of which is acutally drivable. In addition to their other pursuits they own and operate Trident Enterprises. They have been marketing AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants since 1979. Their goal is to aid their customers, and fellow Austin Healey lovers, in extending the life of their equipment, lowering fuel and oil consumption and reducing the environmental impact of motor vehicle operation. Terry and Stephanie are developing a AMSOIL section on their website located at http://dwp.bigplanet.com/trident2000. motion and will now be republished in the March newsletter for a vote. The meeting was adjourned at 4:39 p.m. and everyone headed for the chili.

NEW BIG-HEALEY RESTORATION GUIDE SOON TO BE AVAILABLE Restoration Guide for the Big Healeys to be Published The first new book on restoration of the Big Healey to be released in several years will be published by Motorbooks International at the end of March. Part of MBI’s Authentic Guides to Restoration series, the book will cover the Austin-Healey 100s, 100-Sixes, and 3000s. The authors, Gary Anderson and Roger Moment, note that the agreement by Motorbooks to publish this book has allowed them to significantly update and expand the Restoration Guidelines that have been published annually since 1991 by the Austin-Healey Concours Registry. The book was written and photographed over the past eighteen months. “I am excited about the book, since it will include nearly 350 photographs of overall areas and details of cars that have been restored to original specifications,” said Gary Anderson. “For several years we have wanted to include photographs in the Concours Guidelines, but there is no way the committee could have afforded to take the pictures, much less publish them. Just film, processing, and making the prints cost over $3,000.” Roger Moment noted that the process of preparing the book also required that the authors completely revise every aspect of the concours guidelines. “Motorbooks asked us to change the format to make it easier for a restorer to use,” he said. The first chapter of the book traces the evolution of the cars from the first prototype to the end of production. This is followed by three detail chapters, one for the four-cylinder roadsters, one for the six-cylinder roadsters, and one for the sports convertibles. “Since this meant that we had to review and rewrite the entire guidelines,” Roger explained, “it became an opportunity to do a ‘ground-up restoration,’ making many needed corrections and significantly expanding written information. This also is something we have wanted to do for several years, but probably wouldn’t have been undertaken if we weren’t writing a book that will be distributed all over the world.” The book will be 192 pages long, and in words alone, it is more than twice as long as the current guidelines. A series of tables of change points by section of the car is also included, allowing the reader to see exactly when, for example, a particular part of the interior was modified, with the change listed by date and body, chassis, or engine number.
“During the development of the book, we also went back and examined a number of unrestored original cars, and asked other people to look at details on unrestored cars in their regions to clarify points where we were in doubt. However, we decided early on to use restored cars as the basis for our pictures, simply because it is considerably easier to see details on a clean restored car than on an original car which may be dirty or rusty.” Unlike many previous books, however, each of the cars that was used for photographs was a “gold level” car, so that in the reader can use the entire picture as a reference, rather than having to ignore some non-original portions of a photo. “Nevertheless, we still expect that readers will find an occasional error in the book, and that some of the details we discussed will be contradicted by future research,” Anderson pointed out. “For that reason, we will welcome corrections and additions to our work.” As errors are found, or changes accepted, this information will be placed on an Internet page that will be maintained on a website within WWW.BritishCar.com. The various Healey club sites will be asked to maintain a link to this “errors and omissions” page. Anderson and Moment agreed that it was a great relief to have finished the book. “I could have restored an entire car in the time that the book required,” declared Moment. “Nevertheless, we think it will save others a considerable amount of time in research as they work on their own restorations,” Anderson stated. An Authentic Restoration Guide to the Austin-Healey 100, 100-6, and 3000. by Gary Anderson and Roger Moment, Motorbooks International, Osceola, Wisconsin, 2000. 192 pages, softbound, 8.5x11 inches, 346 black and white illustrations. $29.95. Available in April from Classic Motorbooks, British Car Magazine, and other sellers of Austin-Healey books. For questions regarding this release, contact Gary Anderson at 650949-9680 or at Editorgary@aol.com.
Both authors agree that this book could not have been written without the contribution of many Healey enthusiasts over a decade of effort. “It was fortunate that we were able to start with the Concours guidelines,” Anderson said. “These guidelines have been developed through the contributions of about fifteen Healey specialists. Then, as we worked, we consulted many of them as well as other originality enthusiasts in England, Australia, and Europe, and the United States and Canada to confirm or revise information. Drafts of the book were reviewed and corrected by many of these specialists, with each chapter reviewed in draft by at least three individuals who are acknowledged as expert in that particular model. In addition, Gerry Coker and Graham Robson read the entire manuscript in draft, and Coker wrote the introduction.” 16

Bob Nagel Distributing Sandy Bushore Sandy Bushore’s first Austin Healey was a ’56 which he bought right out of high school. He was so taken by the car that by 1982 he owned a 1959 l00-6 - 4 place which his wife used as a driver, plus another ’59 2-seater which was restored by Rex Urban. Upon completion of the restorative process, Urban bought the car from Sandy. In years to come, family health problems necessitated the absence of his beloved sportscar. As the years rolled by, Bushore realized how much he missed that throaty sound of the exhaust system, that great ride, and the beautiful style belonging to only the Austin Healey. So, in December of 1998, he finally bought a 1960 BT7 which he loves to death. Fact is, he plans to keep it until he dies! He has been correcting rust problems which the car previously had, and in general working on upgrades. In his own words, “ I bought this car to drive, and I even had fun driving it in the rain not long ago. I’m not getting any younger, and I really want to enjoy it...not just idolize it like some people do their cars.” His next car will be a l00-4 cylinder which he will restore while driving the one he now owns.
In addition to all his other duties, Will has another business sideline of custom fabricating headers & welding. He has quite a list of accomplishments in that field as well. He has worked on a lot of great cars and has met some truly interesting people in the process. There are even a few at the All British Field Meet each year which have received his special touch. With the challenges of all these things going on at seemingly the same time, Will Wahlin wants to make it clear that his greatest accomplishment of all is his family. He feels truly blessed with his life.
In the work-a-day world, Sandy is employed by Bob Nagel Distributing where he has been in outside sales for the past 7 years. They deal mostly with large volume users such as hospitals, schools, manufacturers, contract cleaning businesses, industrial shops and so on. He personally has much of the Rose Quarter district, plus PCC, Linfield College, George Fox University, Newberg Schools and many others. They carry everything needed to maintain a clean environment. Club members should remember the Bob Nagel name if they ever have a need for industrial products in a larger consumption situation. They get a lot of walk-ins for those who want small quantities of industrial strength products for home use at their store at 2101 SE 7th in Portland.

Meineke Discount Muffler Shops Will Wahlin For $800 Mr. Wahlin Sr. and son, Will, purchased an Austin Healey in 1972. Mr. Wahlin had always wanted one for himself, but this first one was for his beloved Will. With his Dad’s passing in 1987 the car has always held great sentimental value. His second Healey was a 1955 100-4 Le Mans. It was a fun car to drive, but in 1976, against his Mother’s stern warning not to sell it, Will parted with the car anyway for $3,000. Since that time Wahlin has had perhaps 80 different cars including his 1960 AH 3000 which he currently owns.

HEALEYS IN HEAVEN Three men go to the gates of heaven after they die and speak to God. God tells the three men that they will need transportation around Heaven. The type of transportation each receives depends on how faithful they were to their spouses.
God asked the third man the same question, to which the man replied, “I have never cheated on my wife. I have always been completely faithful to her.” God gave this man a restored Austin Healey. He was the envy of the other men, driving around Heaven in his beautiful sports car. All the other men were jealous but they new they got what they deserved.
The first man is asked by God, “Were you faithful to your wife?” The man replied, “Uh, well, I might have cheated on her once or twice.” Sternly, God asked, “Exactly how many times did you cheat on your wife?” The man replied, “Well..., eleven times.” So God gave the man a Buick Skylark.
One day, the first two men passed by the third man sitting in his Austin Healey, looking very upset. They turned around and went back to see what the problem was. “What’s wrong,” asked the first man. “You have a gorgeous car! You should be having the best time of all three of us.”
Then God asked the second man the same question and the second The third man just stared down the road dejectedly. Finally he said, man answered, “I cheated on my wife five times.” So God gave the “I just passed my wife...on roller skates.” second man a Honda Accord. 18 Healey Northwest u March 2000
