From the President’s Corner: Hope everyone survived Valentines Day without getting in the Dog House. We had a very nice but SMALL ATTENDANCE at the February meeting, I hope it was the weather. March 10, 2007 - Covered Bridges Tour NOTE NEW TIMES!!!! NOTE NEW TIMES!!! Come join us for the March outing!! We will be touring the wonderful covered bridges of the midWillamette valley. Bring your camera and some munchies as we¹ll be having a late lunch. Specifics: Meet at 9:45 (NOTE NEW TIME!) at the McDonald’s in Wilsonville (29682 Town Center Loop W.). We¹ll leave there around 10:15am and tour (via back roads, naturally) to Pioneer Park in Stayton, where we’ll pick up the folks from the south. (You could of course, meet us in Stayton, if your sleep schedule precludes arising early.) We’ll depart from Pioneer Park around noon for the covered bridges. After our meandering, exclamation of the wonderfulness of the bridges, and maybe just a few snappies, we’ll end up in Salem at Izzy’s Pizza (2205 Lancaster Dr. NE (503) 399-0915) around 2:00 2:30 for a late lunch and the monthly meeting. An added benefit?? We¹ll be joined by members of the Jaguar club!! Izzy’s would like a number of attendees. The Club meeting will be held at Izzy’s Pizza in Salem, OR. See the full details elsewhere in the newsletter. April 14 – Steve and Bambi Rux will host a tour of the Mt Angel Abbey with the meeting to follow at a restaurant in Silverton, OR. See the details elsewhere in the newsletter. May12 – Joe and Kathy Laws will host the event and meeting. We will be visiting the historic West Linn Locks where we will get to see the locks in operation and learn about the first electrical generation plant in America. These rates will be held until June 11, 2007. After that date the special room rate will be honored for AHCO members as long as rooms remain available. The annual celebration of British motoring is the largest in Western Canada, with close to 600 vehicles, more than 50 classes with first, second, and third place in each class. June 8-10, 2007 OpenRoads British Car Show OpenRoads 2007 Weekend at Tahoe, hosted by the Golden Gate Austin Healey Club, is open to owners and enthusiasts of British cars of all makes and will be held at the Horizon Casino and Resort at Stateline, NV on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Friday will be check-in and evening reception. Saturday will be a day of tours and autocrossing, followed by an awards event in the evening. Sunday will be a morning car show and awards ceremony followed by departure early that afternoon. A registration fee of $50 will cover one car and two adults. Additional adults are $20 each; additional cars $20. There is no charge for children under 15. Double rooms will be available at the Horizon at a special rate of $97 per night (single or double); $107 (triple occupancy) and $117 (four). Taxes are not included. Registrants must have a registration number issued by the Golden Gate Austin Healey Club to obtain this special rate. The March 1977 issue of Healey Northwest contained two mentions that the local Jaguar Club was interested in recruiting other British car clubs to get together for a public display of the cars at Delta Park during the summer. Austin Healey Club of Oregon Membership Meeting Minutes, February 10, 2007 Call to Order: by President Betty Hand at 3:30 pm at Old Market Pub and Brewery in Portland. Betty welcomed guests and thanked Jeff Mach for arranging for today’s outing. Betty mentioned that her email address in the new directory is incorrect. It should read hand92bb@peoplepc. com Officer and Committee Reports: Vice-President: Jeff Mach had nothing new to report but mentioned that the go-cart racing was fun and Richard Mayor showed everyone how to drive the course! Secretary: The minutes from the January meeting were approved. Treasurer: Linda Adams was not present, but Betty Hand gave the treasurer’s report. Membership: Skip has received renewals from all but 40 members. The second and final notices went out today. Activities: Mark Schneider reported that the activities calendar is almost full. He asked for a volunteer to represent the club at the Historic Races in July. Also he is looking for someone to host the January, 2008 meeting so the new activities director will have the first month taken care of. Let Mark know as soon as possible if you would like to help out. He also mentioned that John Wilson will host a tour to Yachats in August and rooms at the Adobe Resort will be available with reduced rates. Watch the newsletter for more information. Old Business: Tom Monaco mentioned that in the re-write of the by-laws it was not mentioned that the past president stay on as a member of the board the year after to make for a smoother transition. Doug Auberg said we should address this at the next election in October/November of this year. New Business: Tom Monaco reported that he received a letter from the ABFM asking our club to consider joining with several other clubs at the ABFM this year in a tugo-war contest. Teams would consist of 10 members and weight limit per team is 2,000 pounds. All participants would be weighed… Tom received an email from the Jaguar Club offering a challenge. Let Tom know if you are interested. Jeff Mach added that at the recent ABFM meeting there was discussion about adding other “Mini” clubs to the board. Inter Club Coordinator: John Wilson reported that he attended the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ recently and big Healeys ranged in price from $32K to $100K. A total of 14 Healeys went up for auction. John will be attending the International Conclave in June, and so far 100 have registered. Also he plans to attend the Swedish International Meeting which is already booked. Charity: Skip Monaco had nothing new to report. Regalia: Carole Trenko said she will be batching name tag/ club pin orders in the future to get a better price. Librarians: Jeff Mach reported Bill Bolton donated his entire collection of Healey Northwest magazines to the Healey Northwest

March’s Trivia For the month “On the Beach” by Mark Schneider During the last month I have spent a lot of time at home recuperating from some surgery I had in mid-January. If you happened to be at the February meeting you noticed the elegant neck wear I had on as a result of the surgery. No, I am not trying to star a new fashion trend. However, during my extended stay at home I watched many old movies and way more television than I would normally. (Thanks to Jeff Mach I had use of just about every really good “gear head” movie one would care to watch. Thanks again, Jeff). I also checked movies out of the library and one of those movies was the 1970’s movie called “On the Beach”. Some of you may remember the movie story about the end of the world following a nuclear interchange between the U.S. and Russia. The radioactivity was making its lethal way around the globe and Australia would be the last population to succumb. What this has to do with Healeys is that there is a sports car race in the final segment of the movie. The racing cars included Ferraris, Porsches, MGs, and a few Healeys. The racers in the movie were driving with total abandon but why not? They were all destined to die anyway.

Now, for a trivia question: In the final stages of the race sequence there is a Healey that gets T-boned, rolls multiple times in a fiery crash. I watched, rewound and re-watched the 2-3 second segment of film several times. I am pretty certain that the car was a Healey 100s. Was it? The car had a Perspex windscreen and the fuel filler seemed to be in the middle of the body above the boot. The first person to come up with the correct answer will receive a hearty handshake as a reward.

The February 2007 Sykart Grand Prix by Jeff Mach

few adventurous AHCO members gathered at the Sykart Indoor Racing Center in Tigard for some indoor kart racing prior to attending the February Club meeting. The roster of racers included Richard “Ricardo” Mayor, Steve “V8 Healey” Rux, John “Stirling” Carter, Bob “Mark” Wiley, Cheryl “Cherrie” Wiley, “Ray,” “Curtis,” me (unable to decide on a nickname on the spur of the moment), and a couple other members and guests, whose names or nicknames I didn’t get. We lined up on the starting grid and gave the karts and ourselves a good thrashing on

Cold Case, File #011806 Date: January 18, 2006, Time: 10:32 a.m. by Jaci Koeber n January 18, at about 9:41.5 a.m. George and I decided that even though the weather wasn’t looking inviting, very dark clouds with some even darker, that we would take off on our 3+ mile walk out through the desert. This is the route that we take a few times a week. It is just the cactus, some rabbits and birds and US. As we take this walk on rounds created by the quad riders we cross through several washes. At the furthest point from our RV park the clouds started to let loose and we thought we were caught, but it only lasted a few drops or so and we were able to continue on, good thing because there were no trees to find some cover. As we continue on around the circle we take, as we approached about the last wash on our way George decided it was time for him to do a bladder muscle check and he headed for some bushes at the edge of this wash.

He seemed to be gone longer than normal but I looked back and he was coming. As he caught up with me he quietly says, “I found a pistol”. I said, “What is a pistol?” He answers, “A gun!” At about this time I am finally on the same page with him and I say, “When did you find a gun?” He answers, “ When I was in that last wash!” Oh, My, Gosh!! I had to let this sink in a bit and we figured out that this was the first time we had gone on our walk without our phone. We would phone the sheriff when we got back to the RV. By the time we got back we had decided we would go down to the sheriff’s office which was only a mile away. After we had a cup of tea, we got in the truck and headed for the sheriff’s office. Closed! No phone number or anything. We went next door to the County Judge’s Office and I asked one of the ladies if they could give me the phone number for theSheriff. 911 she says. Of Course! But George and I had discussed this and decided it was not an emergency so we should try a direct call. George called 911 and told them he wanted to get in touch with the Sheriff’s office of LaPaz County, her answer, “This is”. He told her he had found a gun in the desert and she told us the Sheriff was on a domestic violence call in Bouse about 45 minutes away and that he would get in touch with us soon. George had given her our cell phone and address in the park. At about 2:10 p.m. a Sheriff’s car comes down our street a little faster than the 5 mph speed limit and quickly stops in front of our place. He comes in and asks where George found the gun and did he have it. By now everyone in the park is wondering why the Sheriff is at our door. George told him about where it was and that he could show him where it was, (hoping to have a ride in the sheriff’s car) and the guy asks if his car could make it through the desert to where it is. George says I think so but we could take my truck if we need to. He says he will follow George to the spot. When they find the gun the Sheriff picks it up with a plastic bag and they look it over, he says he is sure it was ditched there. Someone had taken a hack saw to it but it only scratched the surface. He took George’s identification information and told him the facts on the gun would be on the nation wide network in 30 minutes. George is now sitting back waiting to hear from the network of Cold Case Files so he can re-enact his bladder muscle check and doing his civic duty of reporting such a find to the proper authorities.
