Editor’s Notes …. As I sit here writing this note to you, the sun is bright, the air is still and the weatherman is saying that we are going to reach the mid eighties today. If only I could wave a magic wand over my Healey and it would be completely restored, I would get in and take a spin. Oh well, at least it gets me motivated to complete the task. Let’s see, I have been thinking. Remember the time in AHCO history when a member could call another member and stay with them while in the area for a Club event. I believe it was called “Healey Hilton”. Well, how about a Club Healey Loaner program?! That way when a Club event comes up a member who can’t make the meeting could loan their car to another member for the event. That way at least their car would be able to make it to the event. How is that for an idea? And Tom Monaco gave us the names of many members who don’t typically make it to the annual Christmas Party, so we could start with them. Just kidding of course! On a different note, it was great to see the nice turnout for the “Crusin’ Sherwood” event and for the meeting following. And thank you Mark for great coverage of that event (see page 10). As you know I continually request pictures for monthly covers. Well this month I didn’t have a picture that I could use until the day before the submittal deadline when Continued on page 4 ....
June Meeting: Date: July 15, 2006 Program: “Christmas in July” will be held at Champoeg Park starting at noon. Meeting: 2:00 PM at Champoeg. See page 5 for further details. Cover: Our cover this month feature Robert Cole and Marilyn Masumoto’s 1966 BJ8 sharing space with the Beatles “Yellow Submarine”. If you try hard, you might be able to hear the Beatles singing their song. Can you identify the location?
Thank you: Jerry Barron, Bill Bolton, Robert Cole, Allan & Mary Gross, Jeff Mach, Kimberly Randolph, Mark Schneider, and Jan Whittlesey for your contributions to Healey Northwest. Healey Northwest

Editor’s Notes, continued from page 3 ....
I received three pictures in the mail from Robert Cole. Thanks Robert for this month’s cover. Can any member identify the location? Keep those cover pictures coming. Take your car out to an interesting and attractive location, photograph it using high resolution digital or color film, and I will be pleased to use it on a future cover. Remember, the higher the resolution or bigger the original picture (up to 8x10), the better the cover. As approved in our recent by-law changes, June is the month we organize our election nominating committee and last year’s president, Jerry Barron, will chair this first committee. We need one current Board member and one general member to assist Jerry. If you would like to work with Jerry on this important project or would like to be an officer during 2007, please contact Jerry at 503-246-7545 or e-mail him at mapabarr@aol.com As you know, we have several neat events in July. First the Historic Races. Even if you haven’t paid to take your Healey to the races, you can still buy a day pass, see some great races, and cheer fellow member Richard Mayor on to victory. Also, don’t forget “Christmas in July” on the 15th. Sounds like fun. Perhaps you will see Santa arrive in his sleigh! And, last but not least, we have Rendezvous in beautiful Nelson, BC. If you haven’t yet registered, better get to it. Check out the tours to and from and join the fun. Lastly, regarding the oil pan repair article in the June issue, I included an incorrect e-mail address for Tom’s Imports. For those of you who don’t have the correct address, it is: tomsimport@ipinc.net Now let’s get those Healeys out and enjoy this supper weather.

July15, 2006 “Christmas in July” Tom Monaco and Mark Schneider will be hosting our meeting this month. Our July event will be held at Champoeg State Park. The tour is taking shape and we have several cars signed up. We, Pat and I [Bolton], are blocking 25 rooms at the motels for all of us. Twenty-five was the maximum number of rooms we could get so that limits the number of cars on the tour to 25. At this point we have 13 cars signed up and room for more. After June 30 the motels will release the block. It is up to you to call the motel and make your reservations. Be sure to identify yourself as being part of the Austin Healey tour. Other 2006 Car Events July 24 - 28 Healey Rendezvous, Nelson, BC This year’s Rendezvous, being held in Nelson, BC, promises to be one of the great Healey outings of the year. To make your reservation, contact the Prestige Inn Lakeside Resort at 1-877-7378443 and mention Austin Healey Group. On Friday morning (the 11th) the rally will begin and will be conducted through many scenic roads in northern and western Washington with final destination of Silverdale, Washington. It is not known at this time if their are still spaces available in this rally as the number of vehicles is limited to eighty. The entry fee for the rally is $550 which covers registration and some meals for two people. If you have an interest in participating in this event, you need to contact Jim Gunter at 503-6988090 (home) or 503-382-4503 (office). Additional information available at www.alfaclub.org or e-mail to nwrally@comcast.net September 21 - 24 Northwest Meet The 2006 Austin Healey Northwest Meet, sponsored this year by our Club, will be held at the Holiday Inn Express in Astoria, Oregon. Registration at the door will be $15.00 /person. Astoria offers many interesting and historic sites for us to visit. With the Lewis and Clark bicentennial activities in full swing, the opportunities are even greater. As part of our meet activities, we have booked a special musical program based on the songs and stories from the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. That program is schedHealey Northwest
uled for presentation immediately after dinner on Saturday evening. Room rates at the Holiday Inn Express are $90/night for street side and $115/night for Columbia River side. If you wish to stay longer, the Holiday Inn will honor our special rates for your extended stay. When making your reservation, be sure to mention that you are with the Austin Healey group. For reservations, call 1-888-898-6222 or 503-325-6222. If you’re planning to join us for the Northwest Meet in September we hope you can come on Thursday and enjoy friends and fellowship that day and evening. Also, Jaci Koeber is planning Tea at noon. The Tea will be held at The Windsor House in Astoriaa. This should be a fun and enjoyable tea and lunch experience and the Windsor Tea House is just a trolley ride from the Hotel. The cost will be in the $10 per person range for lunch and tea and will start at 12:00 noon. This will be by reservation only as space is somewhat limited. You will need to contact Jaci at koegeoja@ hevanet.com to make your reservations for the tea. When making your hotel reservations for Thursday evening ask for Caroline Wuebben if you have any problems. Let Jaci know if you have any problems with your reservations. COME TO THE NORTHWEST MEET IN ASTORIA AND YOU CAN:
Check out the Astoria Sunday Market. It is along 12th Street which is closed to traffic for the market. Last year they had 200 booths along with live entertainment and an international food court. The market is open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Might just be the way to top off your weekend before you head home. Also, don’t forget to contact Tom Monaco if you want to go fishing. Another idea, check out the Willapa Salmon Art Trail. It is really worth a stop if you are coming to the meet along 101 north of Astoria. However, I don’t think you should drive there only for the trail. Remember, it is not too early to make your reservation for the Northwest Meet and ensure that you get the room of your choice. We look forward to seeing you in September in Astoria.

Membership Meeting Minutes, June 10, 2006 CTO: By Vice President Tom Monaco at 5:45 pm at Baja Fresh Restaurant following the Sherwood Cruise-In. Congratulations to John and Judy Carter in winning Best Import.
Treasurer: Dee Meyer made the report. Please contact her or Doug if you want specifics.
Officer and Committee Reports:
Club Coordinator: John Wilson reported nothing new.
Activities: Mark Schneider reminded us of the Historic Races July 7, 8, and 9th. There is still time to register, but he needs the money today!!! Tom Monaco gave us a quick reminder that the Club meeting will be the following Saturday at Champoeg Park. The theme will be ‘Christmas in July’. We may have Santa making an appearance. If you want to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a ‘boy or girl’ gift valued under $10.00. The Club will be supplying the basics for a hot dog picnic (hot dogs, buns, mustard, catsup). Please feel free to bring anything else you might like. The August meeting will be a tour out of Cottage Grove led by John Wilson. We will be following a logging road which has been recently paved. Jerry Barron reported receiving a request by the Austin Healey Club USA for a Club representative to attend a planning meeting at the Nelson Rendezvous in July. Neither Doug Auburg or Tom Monaco will be attending, so we will have to get a volunteer from those attending. Also regarding Nelson, the registration is online only, and at this time only 6 registrants are recorded from our Club.
Membership: Skip Monaco reported 196 members, an impressive number considering we still have our two biggest events which usually bring in more new members.
Editor: Jack Jakobsen needs pictures and articles.
Regalia: Jacki Koeber had nothing to report. Tammy Auburg has the regalia and was not present. Advertising: Joe Laws not present. Librarian: Jeff Mack reported the library quiet. Charity: Skip announced there would be a 50/50 at the end of the meeting. And in July, we will be taking supplies to the MD summer camp. New Business: None Meeting Adjourned 6:09 pm.

Did Ya’ Know! by Jerry Barron To clear up some questions on Oregon license plates concerning our Austin Healeys, the following information should be of value to us. Oregon requires both front and back plates on vehicles operating on public roads. However, there are exceptions. Special interest and antique vehicles are included in this “Rear only Plate” category. In Accordance with ORS 803.525 we operate a special interest vehicle. You may obtain from DMV a SP plate (they only send one) or a period plate from a swap meet/junk yard and have “special interest” stickHealey Northwest

This Month in AHCO History
Those Grand Old Burma Shave Road Signs
How about another trip back into the musty vaults of Healey Northwest for more adventuresome tales from yesteryear? OK, I’ll keep it short. These particular Julys seem to have been fairly quiet anyway, perhaps because everyone was gearing up for activities the following month. I guarantee next month’s installment of past goings on will be livelier.
Remember those familiar old signs? Well, for those who never saw any Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930’s and ‘40’s’. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old two lane roads, Burma Shave signs were posted all over the countryside in farmers’ fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs about 100 feet apart, each containing one line of a four line couplet .... and the obligatory fifth sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.
by Jeff Mach
Thirty years ago, 16 cars participated in the Club’s Country Chase Rally. It isn’t clear from the write-up where the rally started or finished, but one participant found himself in Scappoose, where he wasn’t supposed to be, and still ended up finishing in 5th place. Another set of entrants took their kids out for pizza, but found themselves finishing in 10th place. A Poker Rally in the Salem area, with prizes for best time and best poker hand, highlighted the Club’s July 1986 meeting. After the rally, President Wayne Brown and his wife hosted a barbeque dinner, raffle, and the monthly meeting at their house. Club members also gathered at the 10th annual Portland Historic Races, where five members of the Club had entered their Healeys in the races. There is no subsequent mention of how well any of them fared. Several Club members also entered their cars in the concours at Forest Grove. No mentioned of how anyone fared there either. The end of July saw the Club contingent leave on their tour up to Whistler BC for the West Coast Meet. The Club’s coffers were reported to contain over $1,600 and membership stood at 169 members. Ten years later, the Club had more than $5K to its name and membership was reported to be at 262 (but down from 310 the year before). The Club held its monthly meeting in the “Healey Corral” at the Portland Historic Races, which seems appropriate since Austin Healey was the featured marque for the races that year. There wasn’t much else happening reported in Healey Northwest to recount for the month. I guess everyone was busy preparing to head off to the West Coast Meet, which was being held up in BC again that year. We’ll hear more from three past summer Healey gatherings next month. Stay tuned.

Breaking News!!! Austin Healeys Beat Cobras by Mark Schneider
n the morning of the Cruisin’Sherwood event the Austin Healey Club of Oregon (AHCO) and the Cobra Club used the Les Schwab dealership parking lot on Tualatin Sherwood Road as a gathering place. AHCO members began arriving at the Les Schwab store about 7:00 AM. Initially, there were five big Healeys, three sprites and John Wilson’s gorgeous 1951 Olds custom.
O
spot to show our cars. We even had a grassy area behind the cars for our chairs and two more AHCO
About 7:30 AM the Cobras took off for downtown Sherwood. We left about 15 minutes later. The Cobras chose to follow the Meinike Road directions that we all received with our registration package. Southern Pacific R.R. GS-4 Locomotive, nicknamed “Daylight”. We did not so chose. We had been given special directions by the Schwab manager, who member Healeys that came along. coincidentally was also the main man organizing the parking in downtown Sherwood. We bravely drove About mid-day one of the featured guests arrived with right passed the “No Show Cars Allowed Access on much huffing, puffing, ground pounding and horn Oregon Street”. We drove right by the obviously blowing. It was the Southern Pacific Railroad’s. GS-4 clued-in, smiling, checkpoint guards on Oregon Street locomotive, nicknamed, “Daylight”. I don’t know the and into Sherwood. As we entered the main part of origin of the nickname but it could be because when the town one of the officials motioned our group into the locomotive is in the neighborhood it blots out the a very good parking area at the edge of the downtown sun and eliminates daylight. The locomotive weighs area. As it turned out the block we were directed to in at 475,000 pounds. It was built in May 1941 and had been reserved for the Cobra Club but since they operated until October 1957 and was put on display didn’t follow the same verbal instructions we had they at Oaks Park right here in Portland. The mechanics missed out and the Healeys beat’em. We had a prime of the engine are a little beyond the Healey straight six. The cylinder on the engine is 25.5inch diameter with a 32-inch stroke. The torque of the beast is 78,000 lbf. The locomotive was restored in 1975 and toured the country as the American Freedom Train during the Bicentennial. It was quite a treat to see, feel, experience. The Sherwood Chamber of Commerce should be proud of what they accomplished. The actual count for registered cars approached 700 including the total of our 10 Healeys and the Olds. The spectators that came to ogle the cars were numerous, over 17,000 people attended.

much the members enjoyed, or didn’t, and consider if we should plan to do the “Cruisin’ Sherwood” in 2008. Editor’s Note: All photos here and one on the back cover were taken by by Mark Schneider.
I wonder how many of us last Saturday heard the familiar old Healey story. It usually starts off with something like, “Boy! I remember this car so well. My roommate in college had a Healey and….” I had one guy that told me a story that broke my heart. He had just returned from over seas military duty and used his saved money to buy a BJ8, Healey blue on blue. A high school girl driving out of control totaled his Healey three months after he bought it. As this poor chap stood there I thought he was going to cry. Finally I offered to have him sit in my car while I took his picture. I later E-mailed it to him. He now has it as the wallpaper on his computer. I think the club should talk about how Healey Northwest

Post Tour, continued from page 6 ....
We will have tour packets for each of you to give out at Nelson. When I receive the HR2006 agenda, we will select a time for all of us to get together for you to receive your packets and discuss the tour. We will be leaving somewhat early on the morning of the 28th of July. We will be taking Route 23 north and will have to catch a ferry to cross the Columbia River. We have selected Canmore to spend the night rather than Banff as it is less expensive there. The next day we are driving through Glacier National Park and it is a long day as you will want to spend time in the park looking, photoing and maybe picnicking. So we will have to leave Canmore real early. We will have to determine what we do about lunch as we do not want to stop for lunch and waste that driving time. More on this later. When we get to the East entrance of the Park you will be on your own to the West Entrance [50 miles] where we will group again to proceed to Kalispell for the night. It is not practical to maintain a group through the Park. From Kalispell we are going south to Missoula and then over famous Lewis and Clark Lolo Pass trail to Orofino. This is fitting as we are celebrating the two hundredth anniversary of their famous trip, sponsored and funded by President Jefferson. In Orofino we are staying at the Konkolville Motel. They offer a New York steak with salad and baked potato, cooked by them or you, for $15.00. I understand that it is great. So when you make your reservations indicate if you intend to buy it. After we go through the Hells Canyon, we will be approaching the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Those of you who wish to visit it can peel off, later coming to the Super 8 Motel, Baker City, for the night. The Interpretive Center is worth visiting. From Baker City we will stop early for lunch in John Day, then tour to the John Day Fossil Beds and on through Prineville to Sisters. To get a place on the touring list, call us at 541-8955576 or email at tricarb@aol.com Healey Northwest

Spring into Driving! or Drive into Spring! by Jan Whittlesey
art One: For the gardeners. Spring first comes to me through smell. Surely, everyone has a fragrant shrub at her back door. Mine is not a daphne odors; suffice to say it is fragrant with white flowers and I’ll look up the name later. The sun hits the plant; I walk outside; voila!! SPRING. Sure gets your blood moving.

bikes uphill [on a busy road] for 20 minutes.) This was an idea! “Let’s put the top down on the Austin Healey and drive to McMinnville for dinner. What do you say?!?”

I was met with a smile and a nod. We finished our respective chores, showered and we were off! We took back roads and were met with SPRING!! The berries were showing their first leaves. Everything had a green shimmer and were just waiting for more warm weather to burst out into fruit. (OK! I’m a bit premature on that thought.) We zipped along with the other (few) drivers who know that 60 mph is the perfect speed.
art Two: For the car people. Spring is sure pretty, isn’t it? All those flowers! And stuff smells good, too. Sure gets your blood moving.

We were met with teams of 8 adults with blueprint drawings of sculptures and specific 4 hour chores for each person. Or the time I had the “Idea” to rent bikes in Italy and ride through the countryside. Except the first 10 minutes were downhill and then it started raining. We lasted an hour and half and that was after we pushed the

Truly, I thought, this is the definitive moment of the presence of spring: wind in my hair, colors blurring past and the intermittent smell of mown grass and flowers (and the occasional cow pie)! Dinner over (we like to go to the Golden Valley Brewpub), we returned to the car and a . . . um, er, slight drop in temperature. Our friend, (and fellow MG owner) Jennifer Orum from B.C. says, “There is no inclement weather, only inadequate clothing.” We were ready with hats, gloves, coats and neck warmers. The sun departed on our drive home, making this the perfect first drive of the car season. On to summer and Nelson!!
