July Meeting: Date: July 14, 2007 Program: 1:00 p.m. Christmas in July at Cook Park in Tigard. Fun for all! Meeting: ~ 3:00 p.m. following lunch. See page 4 for further details. Cover: Both covers this month feature the Healey-ABL6 a very rare race car owned by Bill & Pat Bolton. See page 9 for more information about this unusual car. Front cover photo by Jeff Mach.
Editor’s Note: For July, we have a very special issue of Healey Northwest. Not only do we have the usual good reports on our activities past and future, we have some articles that provide us with Healey history that many of us have never had the privilege of experiencing. Our covers and the write-up by Bill Bolton on page 9 give us insight into the “life” of a very rare Healey car - ABL6 a modified BJ8. Starting on page 14 John Wilson takes us on his recent trip to England where he spent time with some of the Healey family, got to experience and drive some rare Healey cars, and participate in the International Meeting of The Healey Drivers Club. He also had the opportunity to meet and spend some time with Pat Moss and Ann Wisdom and their famous Austin Healey 3000 Rally car. John provided us with a fine article and many good photos of his days in England. One photo includes the Rally car, Pat Moss, Ann Wisdom and many of the Healey family. This picture is sure to be a collectors item. While I am unable to attend some of the many great Healey outings scheduled this summer, I do hope that many of you will be able to attend the Historic Races, Christmas in July, Rendezvous, and the great outings planned for August. See you at Christmas in July.

We have the Shelter (3) park site reserved from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. The Cook Park site is in a fairly secluded area along the Tualatin River and has a large shelter in case of inclement weather. See Cook Park map on next page. The AHCO will provide hot dogs and drinks and attendees are welcome to bring salad, chips or a dessert. Food will be served around 2:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at approx. 3:00 p.m. We’ll be having a gift exchange as well, so if you’d like to participate just bring a gift and please keep it under $10.00. We’ll have lots of time to steal gifts from one another. Yes, there’ll be a Christmas tree too. Special prizes will be offered for those wearing their Santa hat! If you have youngsters or grandchildren please bring them. We will try to provide some activities for them as well. Directions: Exit 291 off I-5, west on SW Upper Boones Ferry Rd., west on SW Durham Rd., south on SW 92nd. Ave. or 99W off Hwy. 217, south to SW Durham Rd., east to SW 92nd. The August meeting details have been changed as follows: John Wilson has a scheduling problem for the date of August 11th as his daughter is being married the same weekend and he will be out of town. Bob Bollinger and Jim Averill will switch their October meeting date with John Wilson’s August meeting. If you have not reserved your room at the Adobe Resort I would encourage you to do so. Be sure to mention that you are with the Austin-Healey group to receive the group rate. The Adobe phone numbers are 1- 800-522-3623 or 541-547-3141. The managers name is Sue.

pet friendly rooms are also available. The Adobe Resort is looking forward to seeing a bunch of shiny Healeys and have made arrangement for a car washing station as well as a nice lawn setting for photo opportunities. August 18, 2007 - McMinnville Fly-in Tour This will be a tour to Northwest Antique Aircraft Club’s Fly-In at McMinnville
The tour to The Adobe Resort will start from one of the two service stations immediately West of I-5 at exit 228. This exit is at State highway 34 and is known as the Corvallis / Lebanon exit. There is a Chevron Station as well as a Shell station on the west side of this exit. We will gather at which ever station has the best parking situation. We will have a drivers meeting at 12 Noon and leave shortly after. It is roughly 85-90 miles to the Adobe Resort from this spot so this may be a good time to top off your fuel tanks and maybe purchase a snack as there are not many amenities between here and our destination. We will be taking several back roads that some of us may or may not be too familiar with. We will be stopping at a County Park enroute for a leg stretch. You can preview the site, the rooms, and the restaurant on www.adoberesort.com. We have negotiated special room rates for the event. Ten (10) ocean-front rooms are being held for AHCO members at a rate of $106.20 per night. Five non-ocean view rooms are also reserved a $68.00. These rates are reduced from the usual summer rate but do not include an 8% lodging tax. Although these rates were being held through June 11, 2007, the Adobe has agreed to honor these prices until the rooms being held for AHCO members are needed for other travelers.
On Saturday morning, August 18, we’ll gather in Sherwood at a reasonably early hour, then tour the back roads of Washington and Yamhill Counties down to the McMinnville Airport, where we’ll attend the Northwest Antique Aircraft Club’s annual McMinnville FlyIn. Think of the All-British Field Meet, with old aircraft instead of cars and bikes, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect. You’ll have an opportunity to look over and photograph a wide range of civilian and some military aircraft dating from the teens through the fifties or so, see many of them fly, and even fly in some of them, if you choose. If your spouse looks on the cost of British sports car restoration and maintenance with some displeasure, you’ll be able to convince him or her that you could have a much more expensive hobby after visiting the fly-in. We’ll hope to see Club members Terry and Stephanie Hellickson, who engage in both a Healey and a nice Stinson. Final details to appear in next month’s Healey Northwest.

Bill’s Modified Racing Car
Thirty Years Ago On July 10th, the Jaguar Owners Club of Oregon and Portland Triumph Owners Association hosted the First Annual All British Car Field Meet at Blue Lake Park. The event attracted 17 Club members and their cars, along with 19 MGs, 12 Minis, 10 Triumphs, 3 Lotuses (or is it Loti?), and “a huge parking lot full of Jaguars”.
This Healey started life as a RHD Healey Blue Phase One BJ8. It served as a street car for two years and then was taken to the Donald Healey Motor Car Company to be modified by Geoff Healey’s Experimental Group to race in the ModSports class.
At the end of the month, 12 AHCO members in their Healeys joined Austin-Healey enthusiasts from Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia in 13 other Healeys for “Healeys in Paradise,” the inaugural Northwest Regional Meet. The Meet was an informal overnight campout at Cougar Rock Campground in Mt Rainier National Park. Twenty Years Ago Early in the month, seven AHCO Healeys, joined by two from BC and one from Washington for the trek down to Sonoma for the West Coast Meet (now the Rendezvous). For the monthly meeting, AHCO members went on a short tour along back roads through the west hills of Eugene, including a stop and tour of the Hinman Winery, before ending up at John and Shirley Wilson’s for a barbeque and raffle to raise money for the ABFM. About 15 Healeys made the tour, about 60 Club members attended the meeting, and the Club raised about $100 for ABFM.
It was fitted with triple HDCOE 45 Weber Carbs., Sebring Gearbox, Competition overdrive (with switch on the gearshift lever), Detroit locker, a full engine bay and cockpit fire extinguishing system, 24 gallon fuel tank, a full roll cage, alloy bonnet lid, Fiberglass boot lid, alloy flared rear fenders, fiberglass flared front fenders and 11” wide tires. It was repainted red and fitted with a white hardtop. There were about 40 such equipped cars in the RAC sanctioned ModSports class of the 60’s. This car proved to be very fast, especially on the large tracks, such as, Silverstone and Brands Hatch. The car was bought by John Gott to be the second 3000 Healey in his stable. John was a Constable during the week and raced Healeys on the weekend. After John was killed at the Lynwood race track it was sold to Syd and Thelma Segal, hence his name is inscribed on the hardtop. It took the Championship among the ModSports class in 1972 and wears that patch on the rear fenders. It came to Oregon in December of 1984 and has been raced at Portland International Raceway.
Ten Years Ago Twenty eight Healeys and Sprites and more than forty Club members convened in near-perfect weather for a Saturday at the Portland Historics Races. Bert and Betty Hand’s recently restored 1962 tri-carb won Best of Corral honors.

Historic Willamette Falls Locks Tour by Kathy Laws
A
pproximately 35 Austin Healey Club of Oregon members drove from the Lake Oswego Foothills Park starting point, along highway 43 through West Linn to the historic Willamette Falls Locks. The May 12th activity was organized by AHCO members and Lake Oswego residents, Joe and Kathy Laws.
Guide Sandy Carter explaining locks and history.
Gathering point at Foothills Park.
To reach the Locks, drivers had to drive past the West Linn Police Station, site of the former City Hall. Joe Laws secured permission for AHCO Healey drivers to park in a usually restricted parking area that is near the Locks. AHCO members might have been a bit

nervous heading down the very steep ramp leading to the Locks and tour starting point, but the drivers expertly navigated their way down the hill. The stream of Healeys wending down the driveway created an impressive site for Sandy Carter, tour guide and member of the Willamette Falls Heritage Foundation, who was waiting at the end of the ramp and snapping pictures of the Healey parade.
Foundation, an advocacy group for the preservation of the Locks and she had many interesting things to tell and show the group. The locks project was built by the Peoples Transportation Company in the early 1870s to move river traffic around the Willamette Falls. The Locks are the oldest continuously operating multilift locks and canal system in America. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the Locks were an Locks in o important conduit for boats and barges, moving 1.5 million tons of commerce, mostly rafted logs. From the 1970s until the present, the Locks are used mainly for the paper mills’ barges and for recreational craft. The Locks, which were designated as a State Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1991, are owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps is not able to support the Locks operation so the Locks’

operating costs (open from May to October) are covered by grants that the Heritage Foundation has been able to obtain during the past few years. Walking along side the walls of the Locks AHCO members could peer over the sides, admiring the large blocks of Columbia River basalt that were used to build the walls of the Locks’ four lift chambers. Carter said that there were many Chinese laborers who played an important role in building those walls. The group was able to observe how the locks operated when the Locks’ engineer began releasing water into one of the lift chamber to demonstrate how the river water must flow from chamber to chamber in order to raise or lower a barge or small fishing boat past the 50 foot high Willamette Falls. It takes 30 minutes to 45 minutes to pass through the 4 locks (depending on whether a boat is traveling up or downstream. The

chambers are each 40 feet wide and 210 feet long and if you were in a small vessel going through the chambers, it could be quite daunting to be in such a large chamber in such a small boat while the river water is rushing in. The group also had some time to browse around the Locks historic information center/ museum. On display were many old tools used by the early Locks operators to manually open and close the Healey Northwest

My Trip To England April 29 to May 13, 2007
Article & Photos by John Wilson flew to England on 4/29/07 with Steve Pike from Australia. His wife, Helen, met us at the airport in England. We picked up a rental car and headed for John Chatham’s house in Bristol. We found that you do not drive slower than 80 mph on the freeway or you are a menace. Anywhere between 80 to 100 mph was just fine. We dropped Steve and Helen off at John Chatham’s and we headed for Perranporth, Cornwall, to stay with Bic and Mary Healey. Steve and Helen borrowed an Australian UTE (El Camino) from a friend of John’s and also headed for Perranporth to stay with John and Joy Healey. They were such good hosts. Very relaxing home and Mary is a wonderful cook.
I
The weather was great, 70 degrees for the first week. I had a great 100-mile tour with John Healey in his BJ8 Rally car. We were joined by 4 or 5 other Healeys
John & Vicki Chatham’s home in Bristol, England.
For those who don’t know John Chatham, he is probably the most well known Healey racer around. In 1960, BMC sent a team of 4 Healey 3000’s to race at Sebring. One was a practice car and the other three raced. Bill Bolton used to own one of these cars. UJB 141. UJB 143 was raced at LeMans for the next 2 years and then John Chatham bought it and changed the registration to DD-300 and the rest is history. John raced this car very successfully until just a couple of years ago when failing health made him stop racing. He also has a reputation of being a party animal and I can attest to the fact that he is still very good at that! While I was there, Joe Cox, the competition secretary of the main Healey club brought over his ultra-rare 1968 Healey 4000 also known as the Rolls Healey. Three were made as prototypes and given the ok to be used as the 1968 model. Then BMC changed their mind in favor of the MGC. The Rolls Healey was 6”

and went to Land’s End in Cornwall. Bic Healey is the president of The Healey Drivers Club and we had the pleasure of going to their monthly meeting. They know how to hold a meeting. They meet once a month in a quaint old country pub to socialize and drink beer and wine. No business meeting, just good socializing. After 4 days in Perranporth we headed north to spend a couple of days with John and Vicki Chatham in their 1540 vintage farmhouse. It was three stories high and heated with a Fisher Wood Stove made in Springfield, Oregon! Healey Northwest

wider and powered by a 4 liter Rolls Royce engine. The one I had the pleasure of driving for about 20 miles was the only one made with an automatic transmission. It was very smooth and had lots of power. We left John Chatham’s place and headed to Donnington Park Raceway for a weekend of vintage racing. They held a two-hour enduro and two 3000’s finished up near the front of the pack which included Cobra’s, lightweight E-types, Corvettes, etc. After the races we toured around England for four days until the Healey meet started. We met at Blenheim Palace (Winston Churchill was born and raised here), had a tour of the Palace and a lunch of homemade Cornish pasties and homemade hard cider made by one of the Healey’s. In the parking lot were

three 100-S models, a 1947 Westland and two Healey ski boats, both dating from the early 60”s. One was called a Sprite and it is an outboard. The other is a 6 cyl. Tri-carb powered jet drive in-board. This is the last boat made by Healey Marine. The registration packet included bound tour guides that were made up like a rally book but with pictures of all the signs at the intersections where you needed to turn. Neat idea!! The highlight of the meet was the special guests, Pat Moss and Ann Wisdom. Pat is Sterling Moss’s sister and Ann Wisdom was her navigator when the two of them won the Rome-Liege Rally outright in 1960 in a Healey 3000, URX 727. The restored car was also at the meet and this was the first time since the 60’s that Pat and Ann have been reunited with their winning car. Pat’s husband, Eric Carlson, also a well-known rally driver from the 60’s, was there with Pat. Other than the rain, it was a great meet.
At 117 MPH you are almost dry in the rain.
Steve Pike found out you don’t get too wet in a 100-S if you keep it over 115 mph on the freeway! During the banquet a Cornish style auction was held which is similar to a silent auction. All the items are laid out on tables and you buy tickets and then put as many as you want into a jar besides each item. Part of the money raised went to charity. I donated an Oregon Club Grill Badge and a set of Oregon Trail license plates that came off a BJ8 and had the lettering AHC on them. A very happy couple that owned a BJ8 won them. The next time you fill your Healey with gas, don’t complain. I paid around $8.00 per gallon for 1700 miles! Continued on page 16 ....

And, an unusual ad for Healeys and parts: Hi. I’m Russell MacKenzie from Spokane, WA. I have three Austin-Healeys that I want to sell. Just letting you know in case you know anybody who wants Healeys. Here is the short version. I lived in Seattle my whole life until recently. My cars are still in Seattle, so I need to sell them from there. I’m working on an MGA. I need money to finish it, so I’m selling the Healeys. Plus I need to get the parts car moved from next to my garage in Seattle. I can sell all three together, or one at a time. Please advise. Prices or best offer. 1. Racing car 14,500. Healey Northwest
2. Stock Sprite 8,500. 3. Parts car 1,000. alone, or free with purchase of #1 and #2. 4. Misc. parts included with purchase of #1 & #2. 1. 1964 Austin Healey Sprite Racing car, G Production, built in Colorado. Rocky Mountain Vintage Race Logbook. Awesome modifications. It would cost twice the price to duplicate this rocket. All the work is already done. Do not buy this car if you’re timid; it is a raging, fire breathing monster. BODY: Tilt front clip includes hood, front shroud, grille and fenders attached as one unit that lifts straight up 90 degrees then slides out away from front of car, providing absolutely wide open access. Or hood alone with hood pins can be removed normally leaving front shroud, grille and fenders attached like stock. Original hood and trunk lid, plus fiberglass hood and trunk lid, interchangeable and both painted to match car. Full roll cage. 5 point seat belts. Old English white. Bottom 8” of body is red all the way around the car, with two red stripes down the center of trunk lid and hood. 8” racing windscreen. Specially fabricated engine bay stiffener bracing. Metal cockpit clad in aluminum, painted gray. ENGINE: Zero time on 1275cc engine, balanced, .060+ flat top pistons, wedged and nitrided crank, custom lightened steel flywheel, center main bearing strap, ARP connecting rod bolts and head studs, ported head, high lift rockers, race valves and springs, Kent 290 scatter cam, decked block. SUSPENSION: FRONT - lowered, 300 lb. springs, set up for tube shocks, anti-roll bar, poly bushings REAR - 5 point rear suspension, rear lowering kit, rear tube shocks. 2. 1967 Austin Healey Sprite, stock. Old English white. Red Moss Motors seat covers with white piping. No rust to speak of, and the car is an excellent driver. Never restored, only maintained. Appears to have one paint job in the original color. Newer red carpet. Engine bay is really clean, engine painted the correct green. February 2007 had complete brake job and clutch job, rebuilt the SU carburetors, tune-up, detail and polish at Brooklands British Car in Tacoma. The 1967 Sprite is often thought of as one of the best years because of the 1275 engine and front disc brakes. This car is an unmolested example, a survivor that’s never been disassembled. Really shiny and pretty and is a blast to drive. Top has a small rip (1”) so eventually needs a new top, but you probably won’t use it much. I used to drive it to work in downtown Seattle all the time, and easily went 70 on the I-5 freeway. 3. 1964 Austin Healy Sprite parts car. Includes entire car, as far as I can tell. It’s a shell with four steel wheels and old tires, parked outside and shrink wrapped in tarps. Engine, interior, dash, and all parts are boxed and stored in dry garage. Seats, glass, other parts piled in cockpit. Could easily be pulled onto a trailer. I obtained this car as a parts car, but I never used even one piece of it. I’d like to sell all three as one lot to a Spridget maniac. Price is negotiable because I realize there will be shipping costs for buyer out of state. I believe this can be a win-win deal. I can clean up my garage, create space, and fund other projects. The buyer can get the highly desirable original 1967 Sprite, plus a super custom racer and a free parts car.
