Editor’s Note: Well August has turned out being another wonderful Healey month for those who have been able to participate. All reports are that the tour to Yachats hosted by Jim Averill and Bob Bollinger was very much enjoyed. The article by Jim on page 10 and the associated pictures also bear that out. And, the improptu back roads tour to the McMinnville Fly-in hosted by Jeff Mach is reported to have been super. In fact one participant told me that the tour alone would have been enough as the roads and scenery along the way were wonderful. I am sorry I missed the tour! A few pictures of that event are provided on page 17. Continued on page 6 ....

This Month in AHCO History by Jeff Mach Thirty Years Ago The AHCO, Austin Healey Club Pacific Centre, and the Austin Healey Owners Association (B.C.) teamed up to host the third annual Austin Healey West Annual Meet at the Valley River Inn in Eugene. Owners brought 109 Healey cars from as far away as New Mexico and Calgary Canada. Donald Healey was the featured guest for the meet. Events included technical sessions, three tours, a time-speed-distance rally, and a car show at the Shotgun Creek Recreation Site. Twenty Years Ago Austin Healey was the featured marque at the 11th Annual All British Field Meet, and about 102 cars participated. Club members also traveled to Levenworth, WA for the Northwest Meet that month. In between those events, AHCO members held a rally, potluck dinner, and monthly meeting at President Wayne and Sylvia Brown’s house in Salem. Healey Northwest featured information on the Healey Sprite and Corvette sports boats and included an article on Portland’s Danny Kilcup, 83 years old at the time, who had been successfully drag racing his modified 100-6 for 26 years and was still going strong.

Membership Update by Skip Monaco NEW ROSTER COMING SOON This year has passed very quickly and as soon as the All British Field Meet is wrapped up I’ll turn my attention to getting another Club roster printed. Would each of you please look at your blue roster and let me know of any additions or deletions that you may have in your listing? You can contact me at tomsimport@ ipinc.net. I’ll need the changes by October 1, 2007. MEMBER ADDRESS CHANGE: Ellen Hector 10806 S D Street Island City, OR 97850 CHRISTMAS CHARITY AUCTION This year has absolutely flown by and once again the Charity Committee will soon be preparing for our Club Christmas Charity Auction. I’ve lost track of exactly how many years our members have been coming to the rescue of those less fortunate, but I do know that it all began the year Bert Hand was at the helm. Hurricane Hugo had hit just prior to our Christmas party that year and attendees at our annual holiday event voted overwhelmingly to donate that year’s auction proceeds to the American Red Cross - earmarked for those hurricane victims. Over the many years that the charity arm of our Club has been in existance, our generous members have helped better the lives of thousands of people, most of whom are in our own region. If you attended the Christmas in July event or read about it in HNW, you’ll remember that we heard from the folks who work directly with the beneficiaries of the various groups. Further, you heard in their own words how very much they have appreciated our help in the past years and have such a great need for our continued support. That said, the Charity Committee is asking you once again to please consider a nice item(s) which can be used either in our silent or oral auction. In our continuing endeavor to keep the pace of the event moving along as quickly as possible there are a couple of things you could do to help with this. 1) Give me a call at 503-245-0174 or send an e-mail to tomsimport@ipinc.net to let me know what the item is and its Healey Northwest
value so that we can compile our list early and publish it in each newsletter prior to the event. 2) It would also be very helpful if the merchandise could be delivered to us at any Club meeting from September through November so that we can organize the donations for placement on either silent auction tables or on the oral auction table. This would save a tremendous amount of time at the last minute, hectic scurrying around trying to get things on the right table. Your help is greatly appreciated. Included this month is an article on a very rare Healey, the Ski-Master boat, owned by Reid Trummel. It was on display and in use at Rendezvous 2007. To read that article and to see some additional photos from Rendezvous 2007, turn to page 8 of this issue, On page 13 we have included some pictures provided by John Wilson which feature some of the activities John experienced during his travels to the International Conclave 2007 which was held in Vermont earlier in the year. With the Portland All British Field Meet scheduled for the Labor Day Weekend next on our agenda, we will have another opportunity to enjoy our Healey cars and also the many other wonderful vehicles offered by the British. Hope to see you there. Our Healey year is rapidly coming to an end, and it is once again time to elect officers for the coming year. I am sure that Doug Auburg and his crew on the Nominating Committee are looking for members willing to fill the many positions which allow our club to function effectively during the coming year. If you would like to help your club in the new year or know of a member who would, please give Doug a call or send him an e-mail. Job descriptions for each position are available in your Membership Directory. If you have any questions regarding any specific job, I am sure the person currently filling the job would be more than willing to discuss the responsibilities of their job. Please note that this issue is a two month issue as I will be out of town during most of September. The Coninued on page 7 ....

Healey Boat at the Rendezvous
or the first time in the 33-year history of the West Coast Meet/Healey Rendezvous, a Healey boat was present at the event, held this year in Richland, Washington. Reid Trummel of Portland, Oregon, a member of the Cascade Austin-Healey Club – the host club for the 2007 Rendezvous – brought out his ultra-rare 1956 Healey Ski-Master boat, giving the event participants a look at another aspect of Donald Healey’s creative genius.
Rendezvous was offered a boat ride, adding two more to the list of passengers during the week.
Donald Healey formed “Healey Marine Ltd.” in 1956 and produced about 1750 boats over a six-year period. Reid’s boat is one of the early ones, dating from 1956, using all-wood construction, and designed to pull two skiers. With its 55-horsepower Mercury Thunderbolt Mark 55E motor – the same vintage as the boat – the Ski-Master will easily cruise at 30 MPH. Made primarily of African Mahogany, the boat comfortably seats up to five: the “skipper” and four passengers.
“The boat operated just perfectly, like it was still a new boat,” Reid observed afterwards. The passengers agreed. Reid took the boat out for a test run and photo session the day before the rides, and Bill Emerson videotaped and photographed it.
In addition to the “first” of showing a Healey boat at the Rendezvous, Reid also struck on the idea of raffling tickets for Healey boat rides, adding another “first” with this unique feature of Rendezvous 2007. With the Columbia River next to the host hotel, and a boat launch just a little over one mile away, nine raffle winners got the actual experience of riding in one of Donald Healey’s watercraft. Additionally, anyone driving a Healey more than 500 miles to attend the
Tickets were drawn Wednesday evening, and on Thursday nine lucky attendees had the rare experience of actually riding in a Healey boat. Taking three people out on each of three 40-minutes rides, nine Healey fans can now claim to have “gone Healeying on the water.”
This 1956 Healey Ski-Master also won the “Other Healeys” class in the Popular Vote, and provided a stark contrast with the other class winners in the Best of Show line-up, where all of the class winners were presented Thursday evening. “It was fun to share this rare piece of ‘Healey history’ with so many other Healey enthusiasts. There is only one other known Ski-Master in the USA, and it was brought over from a museum in England a few years ago. Therefore this boat is likely the last surviving example of the model that was sold new in this country,” Reid commented. Judging from the comments about the boat, Donald Healey’s boats are still highly appreciated by those who also appreciate his cars.

August Tour to Yachats
B
by Jim Averill
ob Bollinger and I gathered five Healeys and one MG this past Saturday morning for a little tour to the Adobe Resort in Yachats for the AHCO August club meeting . After making sure everyone had their morning Lattes, we left Eugene and drove North to meet some friends at a pre-arranged location. We were pleasantly pleased to see old friends from Seattle, Bend and Redmond Or, as well as our Portland area friends.
After a brief drivers’ meeting we headed West, picking up another Healey in Corvallis. Bob was leading (because Jim gets lost a lot). My wife Marlene and I were assigned to the middle of the pack so we wouldn’t stray too far. After wandering through some pretty scenic Oregon back roads, we passed through the small town of Alpine, Oregon. This in itself isn’t too strange except sitting in the shade of a small tree just on the west side of Alpine what should we see but a Gull Winged Mercedes Benz sitting along with a nice looking blue Healey. After regaining my breath I was wondering how someone with such a rare car could be living in Alpine, Oregon. About this time I spied a car with a Monte Sheldon Rally sticker. Hmm I guess that explains the Benz.
So far so good, not much traffic, great weather, see a few more Sheldon rally cars drift into Waldport and we are almost there. Suddenly Bob our leader pulls into a local Ray’s market (with hardly a proper signal I might add) and he parks right in the middle of the road that everyone else would like to use. What is going on Bob? Oh your car quit running you say ? Well you know the drill, immediately there are expert mechanics spilling out of every Healey in sight. Poor running Healey solution number one (pound on the fuel pump) still won’t run. Solution number two (take off fuel line turn on key, lots of fuel) still won’t run. Solution number three (remove distributor cover check for spark) discover broken rotor, remove broken pieces from distributor, dig around in trunk (see boot) four or five rotors appear from other Healeys. Meanwhile Jim Johnston decides to move his 100-four (he is parked in three spots due to Bob failing to properly signal his exit into the market parking lot. Jim’s car is making a lot of noise but not starting. Quick diagnosis (one bolt holding starter to bell housing). Jim and Gerald Walton head for local NAPA store, wives and girl friends descend on local Latte stand. Ray’s market customers leave store and gather around all these funny looking little British cars, Sheldon rally cars still passing by. Bob’s car starts, yea! Jim returns with bolt for starter, starter repaired, wives and girl friends recovered, except one who saw an antique shop that needed investigation. Cars start, customers return to store, antique shopping wife returns. Once again. Ray’s market returns to normal as we head for Yachats and hopefully something cool to drink. We all arrive at the Adobe just in time to unload, spruce-up a bit and head for the dinning room (thanks to Betty Hand for thinking to make reservations.) After a fine meal (and watching some passing whales) it’s on to Bert and Betty Hand’s room for some mighty fine munchies and our
A few more miles down the road we stop at pretty Alsea Falls Park for a leg stretch-potty break. After our break it’s on to Yachats. Healey Northwest

monthly meeting. After the club meeting we meet with some old friends and make some new friends. Then a walk on the beach and we all slowly drift to our rooms and a good night’s sleep lulled by several thousand sea gulls. Sunday finds more perfect top down weather. It makes a person wonder if this is truly the Oregon Coast. We say our good byes and all head North and South till the next time. Editor’s note: Two article photos on page 10 by Jim Averill.
