Fri 1st Oct, 7:00pm Kepple Lane Scout & Guide Hut, Garstang

Bleasdale St Eadmer’s Sun 3rd Oct, 10:30am - 4:00pm

I am raising money for my expedition with the West Lancs Explorer Scouts to Malawi next summer to help build an education centre in the village of Mangani.

Refreshments and church open following the service. Visit the church, which will be decorated for harvest, enjoy homemade refreshments, view an exhibition of local history at the parish hall and take a walk around the area of outstanding natural beauty.

Your ticket (£20) gets you a welcome drink on arrival plus four drink tokens that you can either exchange with Stable Yard Distillery Ltd or Avid Brewing Co. who will both be there on the night. There will be short talks from both ‘makers’ and nibbles too including cheeseboards from Dewlay Cheese and sweet treats from Creative Cakery. Tickets are available now. All money raised will go towards my fundraising total and your support would be very appreciated. Jorge Pollard t: 07956 638 882 e: JorgesMalawiExpedition@outlook.com

Sun 10th Oct: an informal family harvest worship with a collection of fresh and tinned food for our food bank. 3LS It was lovely to see so many members and visitors at our first meeting after such a long break. We hope that this indicates a return to some sort of normality. Our next meeting will be on Fri 1st Oct at 2:00pm at the URC hall when our speaker will be from Dogs for Good. It’s amazing how dogs can be trained, not just as guide dogs, but to help people in so many ways. Our speaker will be bringing one of the dogs with her to show just what they can do. It should be an interesting and enlightening afternoon. As usual there will be a raffle, a cuppa and time for a chat. Do come along and join us, everyone will be made most welcome. Please contact Jack on 01995 238075 or Ruth on 01995 602006 if you have any queries. Ruth Rendle

Now that autumn is here, we are busy putting the gardens to bed ready for the winter months ahead and generally tidying up the summer containers while we await the North West in Bloom results in November. The Bloom team has agreed with the parish council to adopt all the flower beds within the Catterall Playing Fields, replanting and refreshing where needed. This is our new winter project. If you can spare just one hour to help, it would be much appreciated. The tasks include pruning, bulb planting, weeding, digging, mulching, in fact, anything you feel able to do. We meet on Tuesday mornings only, starting at 10:00am at Catterall Village Hall car park. However, we were disappointed to see that some people who have been tidying up have also dumped green waste at the corner of the playing field, next to the entrance gate. It is very kind of people to think they are helping us but this is our compost and wildlife area, carefully managed and looked after by the Bloom team. We worked hard to clear this area, building a beetle hotel, a woodpile for hedgehogs and a space for chipped wood. Do not dump green waste or branches here please! Fly tipping is an offence. The local tip is now open and happy to take your green waste and branches free of charge. Thank you to everyone who said how lovely Catterall looked this summer. The Bloom Team enjoyed reading your positive and encouraging comments on social media and also hearing the kind words spoken by passers-by. We love being part of the community, helping Catterall be a great place to live, so why not join in the fun? We are a happy little group, plus you get to wear a fancy hi-vis vest! Tuesdays through the autumn, 10:00am Catterall Village Hall car park. Happy gardening! Netta 07508 144181

GARSTANG HERITAGE SOCIETY Working to preserve the history and heritage of the former Garstang Rural District The society is working to promote, share and preserve the local history and heritage of the Garstang district. Our area of interest covers the former Garstang Rural District, including the parishes of Barnacre, Bilsborrow, Bleasdale, Calder Vale, Catterall, Claughton, Forton and Shireshead, Inskip, Great Eccleston, Garstang, Kirkland, Hambleton, Nateby, Nether Wyresdale and Scorton, Out Rawcliffe, St. Michael’s on Wyre, Stalmine with Staynall and Winmarleigh. Our website is used to share aspects of Garstang heritage which otherwise would be lost or not be accessible to the public, and actively record current aspects of Garstang and the former rural district which will be of interest in the future. We will continue to build and add to the website, and we hope to feature a wide range of exclusive articles, historical information, and photographs. Our Facebook page is an ideal forum for sharing old photographs, memories, family tree quests and other local information. To keep up with all the latest news and information visit and ‘like’ our Facebook page. The Heraldic Banner Project is looking to reproduce the original banners and re-hang them in our high street. We were really pleased to be able to display three of the original high street banners at the Garstang show which generated a lot of interest and discussion. PARKINSON’S UK We start this month’s jottings with a big thank you to everyone who helped us to run a successful fundraising event at Scorton Village Hall in August. We raised over £400, which is enough to secure this year’s Christmas party. We provide this free party every year for people affected by Parkinson’s. More about the party next month. We will have Christmas cards for sale at the branch meetings on Wed 13th Oct, Wed 10th Nov and Wed 8th Dec as long as stocks last. Our monthly meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:30pm to 9:00pm at St Anthony’s Social Centre, Cadley Causeway, PR2 3SQ. Everyone is welcome. Because of Covid we are still unable to have store collections and our fundraising is seriously curtailed, therefore we are going to have tombola stalls at more locations to help bridge the gap. If anyone can help us out with donations of prizes please call the number

below. We very much appreciate the support that we are receiving from everyone. Parkinson’s is now the fastest growing neurological illness in the world. Every hour, two more people are diagnosed in the UK. The search for a cure goes on. In the meantime we are here to offer support and friendship to anyone who is affected. Steve Hardaker 01995 608962

GREATER GARSTANG Partnership Board Thank you to those of you who took part in the public consultation exercise in late August/early September. The drop in session at St Thomas’ Church Hall was well attended and the consultants and board members were able to explain the process to and answer questions from those who visited on the day. The exhibition then moved to the Visit Garstang Centre for viewing and was available to view online on Wyre Council’s website. Residents had the opportunity to complete a paper questionnaire or to complete the questionnaire online. All those responses have now been collated and there is overwhelming support for ‘Scenario 2 – Balanced ambitions for economic growth’. This scenario suggested initiatives such as a more pedestrian focussed town centre; a stronger ‘café culture’ and the development of an evening economy; interventions to address town centre car parking issues and reassessment of the current leisure, library and swimming offer. The consultation sparked lively debate on social media too and we’ve collated those responses to make sure a range of views have been captured. The consultants are now working on a draft ‘preferred vision’ for the future of Garstang Town Centre which will be presented for further public consultation in December. The dates for the second public consultation will be announced as soon as they are available. Keep informed via our website, on Facebook and on Twitter. ST THOMAS’ FOOD BANK on Matthew 25:35 ‘For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat.’

From Box to Ministry

What started as a simple donations box in church before Covid became Garstang’s Food Club. One box became a weekly food club with 30 volunteers from the Garstang community and feeding around 40 individuals living locally. Out of difficult times the whole community has benefited from this ministry. A ministry based

During lockdown 1000 food parcels were delivered to doorsteps. See a video here: https://

When regulations allowed, Food Club (like a shop but with no money needed) started in St Thomas’s church hall. Volunteers set up and welcome users who come to choose their own food. Recently one of the volunteers said, ‘thanks for helping me gain confidence

to go out and be useful again’. The diagram shows all the contributors to Food Club. Aldi donates food that would be thrown out as it’s coming up to it’s use by date (helping combat climate change as well as local people). At Christmas a local firm gave £300. We distributed vouchers for the butchers, bakers, greengrocers and sweetshop - supporting local businesses. Booths have a trolley for donations which is collected weekly and there’s a box outside the hall which is emptied daily. Surplus food we have is collected by a school in a neighbouring town and the pupils take it to their food bank which helps teach the next generation about food poverty. Big Green Week This was the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK. Thousands of events celebrated how communities are taking action to tackle climate change and protect green spaces and encouraged others to get involved too. Fairtrade’s unique, two-pronged approach helps farmers become more resilient to climate change, whilst at the same time giving consumers, retailers, and traders the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint. FUN DOG SHOW

STH. LANCASTER SPEAKERS CLUB

We would like to thank everyone who came to the Fun Dog Show at Kirkland Village Hall.

Learn to speak more confidently at South Lancaster Speakers Club

There was a lovely mixture of breeds and all dogs were well behaved. Fortunately it was a glorious day. We would also say how much we appreciated all the voluntary help’ without you it would not have been possible.

Our new venue is at Galgate Methodist Hall, Chapel Lane, Galgate, LA2 0PN. The group meets most 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 7:30pm.

Thanks to everyone’s hard work we raised £1,500 for Marie Curie nurses. We must say a big thank you to the farmer who owned the field next to the Village Hall. He very kindly opened the gate and allowed car parking as we had run out of parking space! We are sorry the burger van didn’t turn up. Unfortunately this was out of our control and we had been promised he would attend. Fortunately Walling’s Ice Cream did attend. So thank you everyone in making it a successful day for the Marie Curie Nurses. Leonie & Elaine

GARSTANG TOWN COUNCIL Town Council Open Forum We have held two ‘Meet your Councillors’ open forums in Cherestanc Square outside Booths. Both were well attended and Councillors were able to engage with a number of people talking about issues that affected them around the town. The Town Council hope to host further events in the autumn/winter. Remembrance Sun 14th Nov This will be the first year that the town council has been responsible for organising the town’s annual Remembrance Sunday event. Plans are progressing well with our team involving members of the Garstang branch of the Royal British Legion, military veterans and the churches. On Sun 14th Nov the parade will assemble at 9:00am in the High Street Car Park. The Pilling Silver Jubilee Brass Band will lead the Parade down the High Street and into Church Street to St Thomas’s Church. The church service, led by the Bishop of Blackburn, will commence at 9:45am and end at 10:30am. The parade will then reassemble and move off to reach the war memorial by 10:50am. Anyone wishing to attend the Act of Remembrance should be

GARSTANG TOWN COUNCIL (cont) at the War Memorial by 10:50am. This year we will have a PA system in use at the War Memorial so that everyone who attends will be able to hear the speakers. The service at the War Memorial will be taken by the Bishop of Blackburn. Hedges & Trees Hedges and trees have been growing rapidly over the last few months and we would like to give you a polite reminder that any hedges or trees that overhang public footpaths need to be cut back to ensure that they do not obstruct pedestrians. We have received a number of concerns about problem hedges. Please be mindful of pedestrians of all ages and those with prams and mobility scooters and keep your hedges well maintained. Mayor’s Charity Event The Mayor has chosen Garstang Children’s

Festival as his charity for the year. The first fundraising event will be a Charity Race Night at Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall on Sat 20th Nov at 7:30pm till late. Plans for the event are well advanced and tickets will be available before the end of September. Supper will be provided and drinks will be available. We look forward to seeing you on the night. And finally as always, we are keen to hear your thoughts on how the Town Council are doing, and about any issues or concerns that you would like us to look into. Much of our information is available online or you can call our town clerk, Edwina Parry. Edwina Parry - Town Clerk t: 07592 792 801 e: clerk@garstangtowncouncil.gov.uk www.garstangtowncouncil.org

CAT SMITH MP Hello everyone. This month, as well as doing my best to support constituents, visit schools and work places and take part in the business of parliament – I’m also running the London Marathon. It’s still feels a bit odd writing that statement as it wasn’t all that long ago that I struggled to run for a bus. I’ve spent the last six months pounding the streets of the constituency in preparation! I’ll admit there have been times when I wondered what an earth possessed me to agree to this folly – but then the charities I am raising money for are close to my heart. Now, more than ever, people are relying on food banks to feed themselves and their children. Without the food banks, kids would go hungry, and we know that when kids are

hungry they struggle to sleep and learn. It’s just not right that in this day and age there are working families who, despite having a job, still can’t afford to pay their rent, cover their bills and put food on the table. In the Over Wyre and Fleetwood area of the constituency we have a higher than average number of workers on low incomes - which is why we have a higher than average number of people needing benefit support to top up those low incomes. Indeed, this month some of those people who are on universal credit, will have their benefit cut by a £1000 a year, further pushing them into debt and despair. When I run the London Marathon I’ll be raising much-needed funds for both the food bank in Fleetwood and the Lancaster and Morecambe food bank run by the Trussell Trust. Between April 2020 and March 2021, the Trussell Trust network gave out 2.5 million emergency food parcels - a 33% rise on the previous year. This comes on top of year-onyear increases in need. A new survey by YouGov on behalf of the Trussell Trust has found that more than three quarters of people on universal credit (UC) are already struggling to keep up with bills and credit commitments and are going without food as a result. Shockingly nearly two million people on UC had at least one day in the previous month where they didn’t eat at all, or only had one meal, because they couldn’t afford to buy enough food. Removing this lifeline will have a devastating impact on people’s ability to meet their basic needs and to find and stay in employment. More than one million people say it will be ‘very likely’ that they will need to skip meals if universal credit is cut. 1.3m people say that it will be ‘very likely’ they will be unable to afford to heat their homes and 900,000 people say it would be very likely they wouldn’t have enough money to travel to work or to essential appointments on public transport if

CAT SMITH MP (cont) universal credit is cut. MPs from across the political spectrum have spoken out against the cut and we have joined over 90 charities that have come together to support the campaign. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has said the cut would push a further 500,000 people below the poverty line. Citizens Advice said a survey of more than 2,000 claimants showed more than one-third (38%) would be in debt after paying just their essential bills if the cut goes ahead, describing it as ‘a hammer blow to millions of people’. If you’re facing difficulties and you need some help then please do get in touch. And if by any chance you can sponsor me, I’d be hugely grateful! BEN WALLACE MP Autumn is now well and truly upon us and I have to say, the nights are drawing in already!

Treatments

ROUTINE NAIL CUTTING CLINIC • Nails cut and filed • Slight callus removal • Nail beds tidied & oiled • Dry skin removed • Professional foot cream applied

Obviously, many of us holidayed in this country this year and I do hope that has meant that we have been able to appreciate our own scenic and interesting islands. Perhaps this new-found appreciation will mean that people continue to support our tourist industry long after the effects of covid.

ROUTINE PODIATRY

All the above plus • Heavy callus & corn debridement • Treatment of verrucas • In-growing toenails • Fungal nails

Nationally, mainly because of the success of vaccination, we have gradually been able to conduct everyday life in a more normal way. Stringent rules and regulations have mostly been replaced with advice, giving individuals the opportunity to manage the risk themselves.

COMPLEX PODIATRY

• Nail surgery • Minor ops • Biomechanical assessment • Ultrasound therapy • Plantar fasciitis

EXCITING NEWS! We are pleased to announce that Claire has received an unconditional offer from Salford University to study Podiatry. This is a three year degree course. However, she will continue to provide one clinic a week at both our Knott End and Garstang Clinics.

Every year I say it but I have even noticed that certain shops in the constituency have already put up their Christmas displays! Well, I hope you have enjoyed the summer, whatever that has meant for you.

There are still many challenges ahead including increased numbers of cases, when the impact of the return to school and work is assessed. As we approach winter the government is determined to ensure the NHS does not come under unsustainable pressure. There are many ways to achieve this including vaccines, Test and Trace, supporting the NHS and social care, advising people and the international approach (helping to vaccinate the world and managing risks at the borders). Locally, winter is usually challenging for the NHS with winter flu adding to the normal workload. Remember that following basic common-sense steps will not only reduce the

Many local businesses have felt the pinch during the pandemic and, while I am proud of the support given by the government, there is no doubt that the future could be challenging for some. I am sure many of us try to buy local when we can and this will be more important than ever going forward. I am aware that many businesses, if not all, have altered the way they work in response to the pandemic, with working from home becoming the norm in many sectors. I wonder how many businesses will continue to work in this way? I am keen to visit as many businesses as possible to help understand the changing pressures that these new working practices have brought about and how, as your local

MP, I can help provide support. I have been contacted by a number of residents in recent months about the difficulties they have experienced when contacting their GPs. I know that GPs are facing increased pressures as patients now seek advice in health concerns, after staying away during the pandemic. I also know that GPs must allow for social distancing in the practices and ensure that patients and staff are protected as far as possible. I have been in touch with several of our local GP practices and I know that they are very keen to provide the best possible service to patients and are changing their working practices in response. I have also been in touch with ministers to seek assurances about the support the government is making available to GPs. I am aware that GPs have been offered financial support to assist them at this time. Please be assured that I’m monitoring this situation and LOCAL INDEPENDENT BUSINESS SINCE 2008

Walking in Wyre Boosted by Garstang Walking Festival Wyre Council has relaunched its Great Outdoors programme of walks and activities which, in September, saw the return of the Garstang Walking Festival for the first time since 2019. Regular guided walks and outdoor activities are hosted by the council to encourage people to get outside, get active and explore the district. Garstang Walking Festival is a highlight of the calendar every year but had to take a break in 2020 due to the pandemic. Plans now continue for autumn and winter and Wyre’s Great Outdoors calendar has plenty of health walks and guided walks for you to take part in, all listed on Facebook and on the council’s website. brought together the expertise of specialists at the University of Central Lancashire, ukactive and Lancashire Mind to deliver a tailored and affordable workplace health offer to Lancashire-based SMEs. As a result of this -year programme, employees across the county will be empowered to take ownership and improve their own health and wellbeing, whilst businesses will benefit from a healthier, happier and more resilient workforce.

Have you recently moved to the Garstang area or have recently retired? Have you visited Garstang Arts Centre yet? Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings, it’s not just for artists - it’s got something for everyone.

In response to the increased levels of poor health within Lancashire’s workforce, the programme offers two main services to businesses in the form of the ESF-funded Workplace Health Champion Training and the government-backed Workplace Health Screenings service. The free training includes basic skills (Mathematics, English and ESOL) and a Level 2 and Level 3 NCFE-accredited qualification for those individuals who wish to drive change in their organisations and create a network of health ambassadors across the county. The screenings, focused on employees aged 50+, combine a physical health assessment and mental health element to produce a unique tool for employees to learn more about their own health. The programme has undertaken a robust training and pilot phase over the last 12 months, where staff from leisure trusts and local authorities have undergone extensive training to deliver both the Workplace Health Champion Training and the Workplace Health Screening service. Businesses can learn more about the programme at www.activelancashire.org. uk Employers interested in participating in one or both of the services can also register on the website. SUDOKU (ans p50) Do you know that the word ‘sudoku‘ is a Japanese pun meaning ‘numbers should be single, unmarried’? Maki Kaji first promoted sudokus in Japan in 1984, but the craze only took off in England in 2004 when The Times newspaper started to publish them. Over 100 million people play sudokus around the world now. Maki Kaji died in August and tributes have been paid to him as the godfather of Sudoku. This month we offer a sudoku, too. A regular sudoku player should be able to complete ours in under 10 minutes, but 15 minutes would be excellent for a beginner. Good luck! Keith Thompson

Sudoku is played on a grid of 9 x 9 spaces. Within the rows and columns are 9 ‘squares’ (made up of 3 x 3 spaces). Each row, column and square (9 spaces each) needs to be filled out with the numbers 1-9, without repeating any numbers within the row, column or square. Each Sudoku grid comes with a few numbers already filled in; the more spaces filled in, the easier the game. The more difficult Sudoku puzzles have very few spaces that are already filled in.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM The forum met on Thurs 9th Sept; half in person and half still on gallery view from home or office. With the council chamber at Poulton half empty it did not feel quite right but it will improve. Many council and agency officers were on screen leaving the floor for the reps of parish and town councils and flood action groups. We might all get together by Noel! First, to Garstang. As I write the East gate is fully raised and the west river bank is cluttered with metal sectional fencing. I am told by the Environment Agency officers that the RAM – a hydraulic water raising or lifting machineon the West gate was replaced and is fully operational but a valve on the East gate was found to be leaking during a routine oil change and has been isolated and now awaits repair meaning that the fencing will remain in place until the all clear. The operational efficiency of the two gates is crucial to the security of land, property and lives down stream.

Preesall Hill had been completed and when drawings had been received a proposal for drainage improvements up stream of Sunnyside Terrace will be put in hand. LCC are considering connecting drainage on the Hill to the watercourse to the rear of Sandy lane. A group of residents will meet with officers to discuss operations. The FLAG asked if an Acco drain, a narrow strip for domestic use made of a variety of materials, and highway gullies at the junction of Sunnyside Terrace and Sandy lane could be cleared. LCC are taking action. The culvert under Burned House Lane has been inspected and found to be in good condition. Highway improvements on Cart Gate have been undertaken although plans to alter the camber had been abandoned due to adverse ground levels. Instead, an additional pipe at the bottom of Cart Gate has been installed. Work will be undertaken

Interestingly, a report from Churchtown FLAG raises the suggestion of additional flood basins higher up river to retain excess water and reduce pressure on the Garstang Basin and defences further down- stream. I know that Thomas Myerscough of the Wyre Rivers Trust is working up plans for NFM –Natural Flood Measures –in the Upper Wyre and we may see more water stored permanently although speaking as a lay man one wouldn’t want to see the Wyre drained dry. The Environment Agency (EA)–a government body- has as its ambition “a nation ready for and resilient to flooding and coastal damage today, tomorrow and to 2100” The EA’s short term aim is a “healthier, greener, sustainable future” and invites everyone to “share our vision”. There can be no doubt that in the run up to COP in Glasgow that the emphasis is on mitigating climate change. Local Issues Confirmed that a topographical survey of

SUPERIOR PROTECTIVE & PERFORMANCE COATINGS

POWDER COATING & ALLOY WHEEL REFURBISHMENT Powder coating is the most durable coating you could use as a finish for a variety of surfaces, not just metal. The chemical bonds give a superior coating that makes it suitable for both machinery and everyday items. It holds well to extreme weather and physical impact, meaning it’s resistant to scratches, abrasions, and chips. At North Coat Ltd we have the capacity to undertake work for a variety of sectors in our purpose built, state-of-the-art powder coating facility. This allows us to undertake smaller contracts for domestic customers, whilst having the flexibility and oven space to accommodate work for larger commercial contracts. Alloy wheel refurbishment can transform the look of any car and add value. Most of the world’s largest manufacturers use powder coating to coat their wheels. However, over time, kerb and pothole damage and the use of acids to clean wheels can leave your wheels and your car looking worn and tired. North Coat Ltd will give your wheels a new lease of life, reconditioning them back to their original glory or treating them to a colour change. Our domestic restoration service extends to gates, railings, garden furniture and beyond. We also offer a paint stripping service. Please contact us for further information.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) to clear roots in the existing culvert. Hambleton and Stalmine. Matters raised include the drainage culvert from the former police station on Broadpool Lane, a highway drainage pipe in the field opposite Queensland, foul drainage from the culverted watercourse at Rydal Road and questions about Sherbourne Road pumping station. The landowner of the watercourse on Marsh Lane would need to undertake work to clear and maintain. Stalmine asked LCC to look at the junction of Highgate Lane and Staynall Lane. A request was made for the layout of the foul pumping station on Kiln lane including invert levels of discharge to Wardley’s Creek. Churchtown FLAG confirmed that most of their issues have been resolved by LCC highways including the installation of new drainage at the junction of the Avenue and A6 and at Ainspool Lane hopefully improving flood resilience. LCC noted concern expressed about the flap valve on the outfall into the Ainspool. Although EA had found no problem it would be checked again. St Michaels; someone unknown has created a Clough (a gully) on Humblescough Brook watercourse under the road leading to the quarry EA claim not to be responsible but will investigate. United Utilities are working with the FLAG to resolve the discharge of sewage from the Great Eccleston to Churchtown Sewer on Rawcliffe Road. This will be the subject of a high level investigation. Concerns were raised about erosion on the right bank of the Wyre upstream of the village. EA will investigate. Great Eccleston: Again the hazard of flooding on A586 at Whites Bridge raised with a request to LCC to improve signage. EA were surveying the watercourse right bank. Regular flooding to Lancaster Road and Raikes Road at junction with A586.Wyre and United Utilities are working on it. At Out Rawcliffe; work on Bodkin lane flooding completed and also at Dry Bread Lane. LCC

confirm that riverside road just past Town End is being investigated for drain clearance. A quick round up of flooding issues in Over Wyre and Rural Wyre raised by residents and discussed with our officers. It is to be hoped that we will have a quiet autumn and winter. Roger Brooks

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund With the heavenly scent of jam cooling and the second batch of gloriously purple damsons on the boil ready for our next pop up shop, our thoughts here at Matt’s Fund are definitely in autumn mode! The launch of the pop-up shop in September was well received and we’d like to thank everyone who dropped by. It was lovely to chat about everything and anything and especially raising awareness of our local facility and of course the work we are doing. From the feedback we received we now plan to hold themed pop-up shops more often and for longer hours so with that in mind our next event will be ‘Shades of Autumn’ at Catterall Village Hall, Fri 1st Oct, 11:00am - 6:00pm with a range of plants, produce, jams, new and pre-loved items, clothing, fancy dress, shoes, handbags and more to help celebrate the season and adorn your home this Autumn. Thanks to everyone who has donated goods towards this event and to the wayside stalls on Cock Robin, seasonal items are always very much appreciated. The ‘Everything £1’ sale in the main hall at Catterall was also successful, raising £389 towards screening. Thank you to all who donated, supported and helped. Following a Christmas pop up shop planned for mid-November our next event in the main room at Catterall Village Hall (not to be confused with Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall), will be a toy fair, so keep an eye out for

We also made it to a three-way tie for the annual Regional Rosebowl competition – having to identify 20 photographs of locations from around our Region. Now the tie-break was to take place at the Regional lunch – so as this clashed with the deadline for this article – that is something we will have to hold over for our next piece – keep your fingers crossed for us. Meetings September also saw our first real meeting at the Garstang Golf Club. It was wonderful to be back there. Being in the same room during a meeting makes so much difference and perhaps why it was so late when we called it a day! We also welcomed two new members to this meeting (giving a total of five since the start of the pandemic lockdowns). Louise and Angela got stuck in at the mosaic cleaning, and Pamela certainly threw herself into club activities by hosting our September gathering at her home. A good night was had by all and it was a fantastic chance for everyone to reacquaint old friendships and get to know all our new members. Mary’s Meals Regular readers will remember that we have a steady programme of support for the Mary’s Meals BackPack Project, which is currently on hold as the organisation can’t take delivery of any items at the moment. But we have also been strong supporters of the main Mary’s Meals charity which collects funds in order to provide hot meals for school children in areas where hunger can be a barrier to attending school. We were delighted to learn that the charity is now feeding an amazing two million children in school every single day. What an achievement. Well done Mary’s Meals.

GARSTANG ROTARY CLUB IS FULLY OPEN FOR BUSINESS Last month we reported that the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre would commence face-to-face meetings. Our first meeting was an enjoyable event with a presentation about the Garstang Millennium Green Project. This is principally a pleasant walk of approximately two miles in Garstang alongside the River Wyre. This is beautifully offset by the background of the rolling hills encompassing Nicky Nook, Bleasdale, Oakenclough and Waddecar. Our second meeting in September was a

business meeting where we discussed the important matter of the charity fund which we require to provide the financial support for local and international activities and projects. At home this has included the sponsoring of national youth events such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Young Singer, Young Chef and Youth Speaks competitions. We have also supported local food banks in an effort to overcome some of the hardship caused by the covid epidemic. On the international scene severe deprivation has been caused by covid. Many poor countries such as Nepal and Kenya have been affected to which we have made significant donations. We recently reported on this in Focus Magazine. A major source of our club revenue has continued to be our 200+ Club which is our ‘better than evens’ six monthly tombola where 54% of our takings is redistributed in The Countryside Flooring Company

We are slowly leaving summer behind but every cloud has it’s silver lining. The autumn in our part of the globe gives us a spectacle of colours with local woods, fells and even tree lined roads all changing their different shades over the next month or so, and of course our jewel in the crown, the Lake District. SEASONAL HEALTH CHANGES

Garstang Speakers Club can provide the opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills and help build your confidence.

Once again we have charged through the summer and a winter season approaches with all its sniffles and coughs.

If you ever need to Chair a meeting, propose a toast or vote of thanks, give a presentation or make a speech at a wedding or other special occasion this could be for you.

Sadly we have now been programmed to jump in fear at what, not that long ago, was deemed a normal event. A temperature is a protective mechanism as your body harnesses your immune system to heal you. A cough is more often than not your body cleansing you, removing dead cells from your own defences having killed an invader.

Visitors are always welcome. Come along and see what it’s all about and what can be achieved in this friendly environment. The club meets at 7:15pm for 7:30pm in the comfortable surroundings of the Garstang Country Hotel & Golf Club on the first and third Tuesday of each month from September to May with meetings in October taking place on Tues 5th & 19th Oct. SEASONAL HEALTH CHANGES (cont) our fellow humans as bringers of disease until proven otherwise. I find such an antihumanity and anti-community idea totally abhorrent. We find strength in being close to one another not pushing people away to arms length or more. I was speaking with a doctor recently who expressed his frustration at what a missed opportunity the last 18 months have been. If the resources and time used to instil fear and isolation in us, both of which suppress our immune system, had been used to promote good health what a difference we could have made to ourselves and our communities. With my cynical (I get more cynical with each year that passes these days) head on I suggested that a healthy population is not a profitable one for certain sectors. So once again I shall drop in my own little nuggets of good health advice for what they are worth!

CROSSWORD (ans page 51)

Please laugh and hug each other. These simple exchanges create a bond and withouta-doubt strengthen your immune system. To live in fear of hugging – what does that mean we have become? Now is the time to begin taking 5000iu of Vitamin D daily. Beta glucans are useful too. For children use sambucol syrup. It is a natural immune booster. Echinacea is also excellent at creating an efficient immune system. Some take it when symptoms start. Others use it as a preventative and take it every day. If you get any symptoms of a cold or other such virus then take 1000mg of vitamin C every hour for a day or two. Use zinc and/or quercetin too. But do reassure yourself, the symptoms of a cold are cleansing signs so rest, stay hydrated and allow your body to do its job. GARSTANG MEDICAL PRACTICE

Do not work when unwell. It is asking for more serious illness to show-up later. Rest must not be underestimated as a healing power, just watch what children do when unwell – they go to sleep. Take fresh air daily and exercise every day, we are moving machines after all and there is plenty of evidence of the immune boosting effect of exercise. Finally, reduce or remove your consumption of processed carbohydrates. That is breads, pasta, cereal, cakes, fizzy drinks etc. They are vitality sapping and bring little nutritional value to us. Many are simply poison except it takes 30 or 40 years to really see the effects with heart disease and arthritis which will then be blamed on your age rather than your diet. I wish you all good health as the year progresses. Nick Tofolos

Originally planned for autumn last year but delayed due to the pandemic, ‘Maps, Mines and Minerals: 25,000 Years of Bowland History’, will be delivered by award-winning geologist Dr Nick Riley MBE and will take place online. From the melting of the last ice sheet to the present day, the presentation will explore the interaction between people, landscape and geology – explaining how this has shaped life in Bowland across millennia. Traditionally held at Browsholme Hall, the Lord of Bowland Annual Lecture has built a large following over recent years. Given the continuing situation, however, the decision has been made to hold this year’s event online, so that as many people as possible can be accommodated. Open to all freeof-charge, the format will also allow virtual visitors from beyond Bowland to discover the heritage of this beautiful area. William, 16th Lord of Bowland, will introduce the evening, which aims to raise funds for two local charities: Slaidburn Archive, which works to record the history of the Hodder Valley; and Champion Bowland, which supports projects benefiting the environment, local communities and visitors to the Forest of Bowland. Both organisations rely heavily on grants and donations to continue their work. Places for the lecture can be booked by emailing Sandra Silk. Local Producer Donates Funds to Raise Awareness of Bowland’s Special Habitats Through funds raised from sales of Goosnargh Gin’s ‘Hay Time’, a re-wild the child project has secured educational resources to support visits for youngsters to learn about the special hay meadows in the Forest of Bowland.

FOREST OF BOWLAND AONB (cont) Hay Time is just one of Goosnargh Gin’s creations which are distilled in small batches in their bespoke copper still Bea in the shadow of Beacon Fell. The company uses sustainably grown botanicals from Bowland’s Coronation Meadows. The wildflower-rich Coronation Meadows are located at Bell Sykes Farm in Slaidburn and they act as a living seedbank – one of the last unimproved flower-rich grasslands in this part of Lancashire. Peter Blackwell, the farmer at Bell Sykes Farm lets the grasses grow much longer before cutting and bailing, so that the seeds can develop and then be used to regenerate wildflower meadows elsewhere. During 2020, for every bottle of Hay Time gin sold, Goosnargh Gin donated £5 to Champion Bowland. Owners Richard and Rachel Trenchard were keen to support a project in the Forest of Bowland that would provide educational visits for youngsters to learn about the importance of protecting these wonderful habitats. Re-wild the child, based at the Gathering Fields near Abbeystead, is a grass roots project in its early stages, raising funds and awareness for the rewilding of a wildflower meadow and providing opportunities for educational visits.
