ey June, don’t be bad. Take a chilly month and make it better. With apologies to The Beatles, we wanted to welcome the month with a little song - so feel free to read it back to the popular tune. And if you’re too young to recognise it, ask your dad! Sunday the 17th of June is Father’s Day and as promised, this month’s magazine is all about him. If you haven’t made plans yet, we’re pretty sure that once you’re done here you’ll have an idea. And well if you don’t, well then we can’t help you so ask mom. We know that dad is generally a lot harder to shop for than mom. Soap on a rope is dead in the shower and you bought him socks last year. Check out page 12 for some retro-inspired gifts for dad that you may just want to keep for yourself too – shotgun the turntable.

#HELLORECOMMENDS RACING.

It’s a Rush T

he main objective for Racing. It’s A Rush is to bring the ‘Sport of Kings’ back to the forefront of the lifestyle and entertainment industrys. The goal is to reinvigorate the sport and bring back the glamour, thrill and excitement of horse racing. The brand itself is fresh, inspired and exciting and is discovering, attracting and engaging with a new generation of horse racing enthusiasts. The idea that is being promoted, is to expose the younger generation to several facets – the rush of racing as well as the fashion and the fun that comes with a day at the races. Using an interactive website and an everincreasing social media presence, a new wave of followers are being taught the intricacies of a sport that carries a proud history and is unearthing a new wave of talent. Part of their journey includes removing stigmas, educating a new, expanding audience and promoting a number of event experiences across South Africa. The lounge is beautifully decorated and offers not only the best views over Johannesburg, but also of all the races, and with its own private bar, restaurant and betting facilities, it certainly shows that racing is a popular and classy affair.

We were treated to an amazing day, with our own private seating area, a delicious floating canape menu and Jameson’s whisky joined us for an interesting and interactive tasting of a variety of their offerings. Guests were dressed to the nines in bowties and fascinators, as the lounge does have a strict dress code. A great amount of fun was had trying to choose which horse to place money on (always go with a cool name, seems to be the consensus). A short lesson on the history of horse racing followed, and then we were privileged to take a tour of the racecourse, and watch the horses in the parade ring, as well as watching a race from the side of the track – which is certainly a once in a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten. If you are looking for a fun day out – make sure to head over to the Racing. It’s a Rush lounge at Turffontein racecourse, you will love every minute! KEEPING UP WITH

Kensington!

People of

JOBURG

Lenny-Dee Doucha

With a variety of attractions from food, beer and antiques to the perfect picnic spot Kensington has something for everyone! With so much to do, we think it would also make a perfect day out for Father’s Day - if your dad is an outdoorsy, antique loving, beer drinker that is! RHODES PARK Catch the winter sun here! Meander down the stepping stones of Rhodes Park, and spend the day sitting in the sun, while overlooking the lake. There is a small amphitheater at the park where shows are held occasionally under the stars. Take your children for a fun day out and play on the swings and jungle gym. Rhodes Park is a wonderful place to spend some time in nature, right in the city! Bring a picnic blanket and some gluewien and feel the winter sun on your face. As with most public areas, please be aware of your surroundings at all times and the park is best experienced during the day. Cnr Cumberland and Ocean streets, Kensington ‘ANTIQUE LANE’ Antiques fit for a queen (and king)!

Kensington is a wonderful place to get your antique fix. Queen street is laden with unique antique stores, so you only need to visit one place to find all the gems you are looking for. An antique is classified as something that is valuable because of its age and quality. Usually antiques are over 100 years old, but you will find an array of gorgeous furniture options, art and crystal that vary in age and are in exquisite condition. If you browse long enough from store to store, you are most likely to find odds and ends that are diamonds in the rough that you won't be finding anywhere else! Try Rudan Antiques, Ye Olde Collector, Granny's Attic, The Yard and Barter Buy Antiques & Interiors, all on Queen Street.

DIE KNEIPE Traditional German Pub Die Kneipe (meaning The Pub in German) is not your average local pub. If you love traditional German food, such as zwiebelrostbraten (simply put: rib roast cut meat, onions and gravy) and pork roast, accompanied by imported German beer, then this is the place to go. The atmosphere is very relaxed, so don't be in a rush when you visit. You can expect good prices and a fun ambiance, with many of the guests being locals at the bar. Did someone say Jägerbomb? Lenny-Dee is the lead singer of eclectic dream pop sensation, Bye Beneco who have been making waves in the underground and pop culture music scenes. Their sound stems from various styles with the intention to forever evolve with Johannesburg being their biggest influence! She is also known for being a stylist & art director. 

What is your favourite part about the creative industry in Jozi? There are so many talented people in Jozi breaking boundaries and setting standards locally and internationally. There is something so special about the Joburg scene and we’re on the map, all eyes on South Africa. I love watching people I know blossom into these insanely creative visionaries and I’m excited to be apart of the movement. What’s the story behind the name Bye Beneco? Beneco was the name of the ship that brought my Czech side of the family to South Africa in the early 1900s Your top 3 albums? That is quite a tough one because I have so many top albums, but I can tell you what I’m listening to at the moment. Arcade Fire ‘Everything Now’, Kali Uchis ‘Isolation’ and Pond ‘The Weather’. What has been your favourite project to work on to date My two favourite projects I have worked on have been the music videos for our singles ‘Jungle Drums’ directed by Emilie Badenhorst and ‘Ghetto Disko’ directed by Ying-Poi De Lacy. What is your wardrobe must have? And why? My wardrobe must have is my limited-edition Crystal Birch felt beret! I love it! What’s your favourite store in Jozi? The Moral Kiosk, Melville. Coffee, records & clothing. They have the maddest cowboy boot collection too. f www.facebook.com/themoralkioskjhb/ What’s a weird habit that you have? I don’t like creases. I like cleaning. A lot. I’m slightly OCD. What can we expect from Bye Beneco in the future? We’re about to embark on our third annual European Tour and have a full-length album in the works. Date to be confirmed but we’re super excited about our new stuff and you should be too! Hello Joburg • June 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Some like it public A quick guide to public sex in Jozi

8

Hello Joburg • June 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

We spoke to some of Hello Joburg’s more forthcoming readers for some suggestions and ideas and then tried out some of them. A good time was had by all.

KARAOKE BOOTH AT SAIGON SUZY

Saigon Suzy is the ideal venue for a shag. In fact, if you weigh it all up, you’ll see why Setting the mood: The small tapas and sharing menu fills the tummy just enough but won’t leave you feeling like a food coma is imminent. Getting kinky on a full tummy is not ideal. The lighting throughout the venue is conducive to a good flirt with just the right amount of light to lock eyes with the guy across the room at the bar but dim enough that no-one else will notice (unless you stare like a moron for an extended period) Physical safety risks: The seating in the

karaoke booths are comfy and you can really stretch your legs out when you are lying flat which is important if you are in the mood for more than a quickie. Sex in a tight spot risks an injury. Risk of getting caught: The later it gets in the evening, the less strict the venue management become about people coming in and out of the booths which is great because it means less chance of getting caught but still hasthe thrill of someone popping in to sing a song.

THE GOODMAN GALLERY IN ROSEBANK After all, according to Pablo Picasso, “sex and art are the same thing”

Setting the mood: You both like art so going to an exhibition at a larney gallery in the evening is

Words Carly Ritz

Public sex has its own entry in Wikipedia. It is described as a sexual activity that takes place in a public context. Not rocket science. But here’s the boring part of the entry. The Wikipedia entry describes public places as a back-yard or in your bedroom with the curtains open, maybe even a car, beach or cemetery (which is just weird) but the point is, with the whole of Joburg as your playground, why not take it up a notch?

lifestyle

already exciting. And in the event that one of you doesn’t actually like art, there is often free wine at the gallery and at least one of you likes wine so it’s a win-win situation on the arts and booze front. In conclusion, the combination probably makes you both feel a little dizzy and/or horny. Perfect! Add to that a venue with various halls, nooks and crannies, dim lighting and people going out of their way to ignore other people (because who really socialises at a gallery) and you have an interesting and challenging sex setting. Physical safety risks: When it comes to sex in a gallery, you biggest safety concern should be the damage to your wallet. Should you decide to get a little hot and heavy, keep away from anything fragile or breakable. That is not a bill you want to pick up at the end of the evening! Risk of getting caught: HIGH! Which is why we suggested it.

Saigon Suzy

PS: If this really does peak your interest, then check out to see what’s on this month to get your partner to the gallery so you can take up the challenge: http://www. goodman-gallery.com/

HOT AIR BALLOONING

Romantic ride for 2 (with the guy flying the balloon) – but three doesn’t have to be a crowd Setting the mood: Can it get more romantic than sunrise over the city? It’s usually pretty chilly at this time of the day too so all the more reason to cuddle. Don’t worry about the guy controlling the hot air balloon. He is focused on keeping you safe and has probably seen it all before. It’s just another day at the office for him really. Physical safety risks: This depends a lot on the size of the basket, but a standard basket can take up to 8 people plus an instructor. If you have booked the balloon for just two of you to play crouching tiger and biting dragon while the instructor directs the balloon, then it’s pretty roomy. Just make sure you take a soft-ish blanket along. Risk of getting caught: Well if it’s just the two of you and the guy flying the balloon then get comfortable with the fact that he may sneak a peek. Alternatively, if you opt for a 4-couple experience, then with the correct clothing and positioning (i.e. gal in skirt in front of guy with loose fitting pants) there’s no reason you can’t go for a little dip in. Everyone else is going to be focusing on the view anyway.

ON A LESSER USED STAIRCASE – ANYWHERE!

Now the world is your bedroom Setting the mood: This one’s for the couple

The Goodman Galler y who really just can’t wait. At any busy mall, hotel, theatre, airport or office block there is a staircase, somewhere waiting to be christened. Joburg has plenty of these so this one really is yours for the picking. Physical safety risks: Of all the places to have sex, this is probably one of the most uncomfortable. Between the steps and stair bannisters, a little slip or bump could result in concussion or even broken bones. Risk of getting caught: The chances of getting caught by an individual on a remote stairwell is high. Think hotel manager running between floors, a shop assistant dashing downstairs or to the roof for a quick ciggie or just a kid in a mall playing hide and seek #awkies. But seeing as though these are usually service stairs, you are unlikely to be discovered by a big crowd armed and ready to WhatsApp – so that’s the upside.

IN A SEX CLUB

Despite South Africans being a little more conservative than the rest of the world, these do exist.

Setting the mood: Well if you’re going to one of these spots, then you’re probably in the mood already. And this really is a safe place because they’re designed for you to let your hair down and take your pants off. There is a perception that sex clubs are for single people who can’t get laid to find a stranger and get it on, but according to our sources, a lot of couples who have been together for ages like a visit to one of these places for some fun together. Physical safety risks: These types of clubs take personal safety, dignity and reputation very seriously. Many of them have a screening process and/or introduction tours with briefs on what to expect upfront. Where to go: http://pharaohs.co.za/who-we-are/ https://www.clubrome.co.za/ If you think we’ve missed a spot, please do share. It’s your public duty! Happy shagging. NEW BABY! No joke!

Hello Joburg • June 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Compiled by Carly Ritz

The last time Hello Joburg caught up with comedian Alfred Adriaan, he was still working a corporate job, pretty single and dating up a storm. Things have changed. The man rocking this month’s cover is now doing comedy full time, married and a brand new dad. HJ caught up with Alfie to chat about being a dad, his first one-man show coming to The Pieter Torien theatre and the world of dating.

Alfie fell in love with his son the minute he laid eyes on him but can’t get over how the more he cries, the more his mother adores him. “It’s like a baby spell to which only moms are susceptible. The kid kept her up for 3 days in a row and she’s just so in love. I don’t know how he does it. He can do no wrong. I need the husband version of the spell man.” As for becoming a panicky sleeper since the baby’s taken up space in the boudoir he says, “I fall asleep and forget he’s there. Then I feel him and poep myself that I’m going to roll over and squash him. Jirree the wife was demorien when I said he’s got to go back to the cot.” But the truth is that right now there is no greater heroine in his life than his wife.

“Seeing what my wife went through during birth – that is not for the faint-hearted. People say ah it’s just a little injection in the back. Rubbish. They don’t warn you about the graphics. It’s like watching an exorcism.” So what kind of a dad does he plan to be? “I never thought I’d say it, but I’m pretty comfortable turning into my dad. My dad is a fantastic dad. He used to spoil me with everything I needed but gave me a realistic perspective on life. He was as adamant that I understood all kinds of people and their struggles. All during my upbringing he was always very supportive but let me fall a couple of times to learn things on my own.” “He encouraged me to make decisions on my own. I don’t want to be a hardcore dad. I want to show him the world and take him to Paris but also want him to pack shelves at a Checkers. I did. I want him to make his own way in life. My dad taught me that early on.” So in between interrupted sleep and a crying baby, Alfie is planning for his first one-man show at The Pieter Torien theatre later this month. It’s been a lifelong dream for the comedian and it’s taken time to get here. “I needed to be ready. I never want to give people sub-par entertainment. I wasn’t going to do that. If people are going to get out of bed and plan their day around me, buy a ticket, drive to a venue and pay attention to a 90-minute show then they deserve the best not some average show because I need money and it’s due. So if the next show after this is only in 2 years from now forgive me. Now you know why.”

The show called Dating Life is a play on words. It’s definitely about a once awkward Alfie trying to crack it with the fairer sex but it’s also about dating life in terms of negotiating everything that has come his way from growing up to getting married and everything in between and with this comes some very edgy and very honest observations about relationships overall.

“A

new baby is no joke. I mean I’ve swopped my dream car for a daddy sedan” says an exhausted but delighted new dad over three cups of strong coffee. If there is one thing that’s dawned on the small-town guy from Hankey near PE, it’s that until this point, he has been seriously selfish in how he’s lived his life. “I don’t think I was prepared for how much a new-born baby can actually cry and my routine has done a total 180. Instead of meeting my agent this morning like usual I’m taking the little guy to the clinic for a checkup and weigh-in – in my new daddy car with car seat obviously because he has to come first now.”

So what can audiences expect? Alfie talks about sticking to your “time-slot” when it comes to meeting girls at clubs or bars. It sounds a little strange at first but on consideration, you may realise you’ve been there too. “You learn about your time-slot in your 20s” Alfie explains. “It’s important to know when to arrive at the venue or club. First of all, drinks are expensive. So you don’t want to buy drinks for a girl you have no shot with. Some guys arrive at 9, buy one or two drinks and leave at 10 with 2 girls. I was never that guy. I was the 11:30 pm guy – having to come later because only the drunk girls would even consider me. That’s the time-slot theory” Taking girlfriends home to meet his mother was also an interesting process. “My mother was like Randall in Idols when it came to coloured women. She made them jump through hoops man. But If I brought a white girl or foreigner – then she was happy.” Alfie’s observations about relationships, gleaned mostly from his parents are both insightful and side-splitting. “Men become way too comfortable the longer they are in a relationship but the more a woman is with a man the more uncomfortable she becomes. Men let themselves go. There’s my dad on the couch in his socks and undies. Women take care of themselves. They eat well and train and never lose hope that they can fix their man because after 3 decades they are way too far down the line to start again. They will spend their lives trying to turn Mr Bronx into Mr Loafers. Sometimes to no avail” But despite his highs and lows of dating, nothing compares to his marital bliss. “I love coming home to my wife and son. Gone are the days of FOMO and hanging around after gigs. Now I can’t wait to get home.” So any final words on dating? Here’s one from Alfie that we love and really resonate with. Dating isn’t about capturing something beautiful or being in a relationship where you smother someone. It’s about the rare and pretty bird in that window that keeps coming back to visit if you leave the right seeds quietly on the window sill. But if you put a cage over it, everything changes and the first chance it has, it flies away. You can’t cage a wild thing. For this and more in dating life, don’t miss Alfie’s show! PAREA GREEK TAVERNA Let’s go to the Greek! Parea Taverna and Grill is literally a true Joburg establishment with their doors being open for an incredible 29 years of great vibes and yummy food.

Arriving on the doorstep of Parea, you would be forgiven for thinking you have been magically transported to a small Greek village. Tables on the balcony, covered with blue and white tablecloths are packed to capacity with traditional dialects, and the feeling of family is already a strong one. This makes complete sense when they tell you that the term Parea is one of those great Greek sayings that although almost impossible to translate basically describes a group of people who derive great pleasure simply by being together. Now we get it!

options, as the food comes out of the kitchen at supersonic speeds. We highly recommend the deep-fried squid heads, flame grilled haloumi, falafels and of course pita bread accompanied by a variety of dips which is an obvious and tasty choice.

Friday and Saturday nights the traditional Greek dancers wend their way between the tables with a dexterity that is impressive.

Everything is prepared fresh on site and we just can’t rave enough about the incredible selection of dips! We tried the four-dip platter of Humus, Skorthalia, Tzatziki and the Melitzanosalata which is finely chopped brinjals in a garlic dressing, yum!

Come hungry – that’s all we can say, and we are so glad that we did! If Meze and sharing is your thing, then you’re in the right place. Not only do you get to taste all the different types of dishes on offer but it also makes your dining experience way more festive and hands on. You will be in awe of all the delicious

Greek food is simply prepared which allows the natural taste of each item to speak for itself. The team in the kitchen rely on ancient traditional cooking methods and freshness of ingredients that allow them to produce a standard of food that keeps customers coming back again and again.

Parea is available for functions and birthday parties and is fully able to accommodate up to 200 people. Set menus can be put together to suit your specific requirements, for tables of 5 or more if pre-booked.

e initially started his studies as a lawyer – but it soon became clear that this was not where his passion lay. His mother told him he had one last chance to make a choice about his future and he chose (thankfully for us) chefs school. It was at Prue Leith’s school in Centurion where is passion not only grew, but was cemented during his 18-month course, and after that stints at La Coulombe, followed by the Maldives and Miami before returning home helped to form the passion of the young and inspired chef. Breaking the mould is something that is important to him – and his new menu which has just launched is set to do just that. The new menu is based around the beautiful plates on which it is served – from

a variety of shapes and sizes to a vast array of colours – there is literally something different and unique about every single dish and the way it is served. When asked what his motto is, Chad immediately responds

“Work smart, not hard. There are times of course that you must work hard, and then you do, but if you are smart about it nothing is too much to manage” . We had to know what his favourite dish on the new menu was. Without a doubt he chose the Sous Vide Chicken, and of course, we had to know more.

This is a slow cooked chicken dish that is marinated in Sriracha sauce (a delicious hot chilli sauce that is set to tickle any taste buds) and is an old favourite of Chad’s that moves with him and always seems to find a spot on the menu.

Chad loves Asian flavours and he pulls this through in to many of the dishes, including the calamari salad which is a huge hit as well. Don’t get too attached though Hello Joburgers, the menu is set to change every 6 months, which keeps things exciting too.

Of course, we wanted to know where Chef Chad spends his days off, and he laughs as he shares that he loves to go enduro bike racing and fishing too, although often he spends the day in bed watching series and catching up on some sleep. Nothing wrong with that, we say!

Another aspect that we really like is the fact that the room service menu will echo the restaurant menu to a T. Says Chad “The idea is that people will try something on the room service menu and next time they are staying over, rather suggest

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review…THE LONELY HEARTS CLUB

S

o, here’s the scoop. This hip little spot is situated in a landmark building that’s one of Melville’s oldest shops (so cool!), they play a soundtrack of 80s music and the interior of the restaurant is decorated to feel like a sophisticated living area in a fancy mansion. The Idea of The Lonely Hearts Club is even cooler then the interior. Basically, singles are encouraged to pop in, order a cocktail at the bar and have a chat to the friendly barmen…and perhaps… meet another lonely heart in the process. The drinks, cocktails and wine options are incredible, and tasted as wonderful as they looked. The Barmen really knew what they were doing and offered great conversation along with delicious drinks. After enjoying a few cocktails at the bar, food was a top priority. Looking at the open kitchen with an impressive Spanish coal oven, expectations ran pretty high, especially after reading the menu that sounded absolutely scrumptious. With everything from vegetarian, seafood and meat Tapas (all with unique twists) the excitement was real. But…. Here’s where things became a little underwhelming, after starting the entire experience on such a high note filled with excitement, an extraordinary atmosphere and amazing service, the food was insipid. Beautifully plated, but lacking soul and flavor. Here’s the thing, you can always taste when food is prepared without passion and that’s exactly what it tasted like. Good food comes from the heart as they say, and it couldn’t be truer. It felt like the chef was going through all the motions of a preconstructed formula without adding any personality or love for the craft. The food felt like it needed seasoning, salt, pepper…anything! But there was none to be found which was disappointing? Maybe a little presumptuous on the chef ’s behalf ? All in all, the vibe was great, the setting incredible, the music fantastic and the drinks out of this world, the food however, left something to be desired. P.S. I’m still dreaming about their Negroni...

- The Countess

The Countess is an artisanal American Smokehouse in the heart of Melville’s 27 Boxes, that oozes personality from every corner, just like its owner Leon Pretorius.

W

ith the idea to create a space that speaks to people in terms of flavour profiles, from chicken liver parfait to lasagne and rich slow-cooked brisket, the menu is packed with Leon’s favourite home-cooked meals. The Homeliness is only extended by the fact that every dish at The Countess is freshly prepared to order, with an extremely honest approach to every aspect on the plate.

Words Taryn Louch Image Supplied

Leon only sources produce from sustainable local suppliers and ensures that every ingredient is as natural as can be, always keeping his customer in mind. Unable to pinpoint his favourite dish, he admits that it’s a close call between the incredibly flavourful brioche bun used for The Countess burger, and the Pot de crème which is a rich baked custard that is prepared sous vide and served cold with organic maple syrup, black lava salt and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum! The Countess is all about the

theatre of food when it comes to presentation, with French copper pots housing the likes of creamy garlic mashed potatoes and slow-cooked yams topped with marshmallows. The sumptuous menu is a far cry from the sausage rolls, viennas and cheese which were Leon’s staples as a child and rather features gourmet delights like the elegant starter plank for two that includes mustard seeds, pickled in champagne. People love this way of eating and it’s the perfect conversation starter; as are the travelling spoons, which Leon collects and presents with every cup of his locally roasted Ryo coffee. The soundtrack will have you tapping your toes in this charming, comforting and somewhat nostalgic space, peppered with a host of recycled and repurposed décor elements. Named after an incredible inspiration in Leon’s life, The Countess has created a platform for people to enjoy themselves, and it’s Leon’s greatest reward at his cosy slice of heaven. 27 Boxes, 75 4th Ave, Mellville 1 011 482 7361 5 www.thecountess.co.za

24 HOURS IN JOZI And just like that, we are halfway through the year! Boom. We know this because we’re a monthly magazine and its Father’s Day on June 17th. So this one’s for him. Whether dad likes his whisky peaty or his steak medium, don’t worry – we got this. Mary Antoinette might have given the people cake (or though some aren’t all that sure it’s exactly what she said) but today Hello Joburg is giving the dads everything else LET THEM EAT MEAT

When it comes to winning over dad on Father’s Day, we find going straight for the stomach works wonders. And if that is the plan, then go big or go home. Today is the not the day for burgers and beers. No, today is the day for Rib-eye and rump, sirloin and fillet. The Smokehouse and Grill: For the trendy dad, try the heart of Braam for an aged and basted 750g T-Bone in the house sauce. And while this is about the steak, it would be remiss of us not to mention the peanut butter ice-cream with hot butterscotch sauce! Where: 73 Juta St, Johannesburg, 2001 1 011 403 1395 5 www.thesmokehouseandgrill.co.za

Thunder Gun Steakhouse: For the dad that likes his meat with a flare, you can’t go wrong with Thunder Gun. With an array of specialities that have been winning patrons over for 40 years, there is certainly something on this menu that dad will not have tried before. We highly recommend the rubbed sirloin with mustard seeds, rosemary, coarse salt and pepper or the Cajun sirloin with a creamy Danish feta. Where: 281 Beyers Naude Drive & Lewisham Rd, Blackheath, Randburg, 2195 1 011 678 7224 5 www.thundergun.co.za The Grillhouse: For the dad who is into all things classic and throws phrases around like “back in the good ol days” then nothing beats a steak at The Grillhouse in Rosebank. We are well aware that the new flagship restaurant is in Melrose Arch, but if your dad’s a meat fan then the Rosebank branch is like a culinary historical institution on the Jozi food map. So just do it! Where: The Firs, Hyatt Centre, Oxford Road & Biermann Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg, 2196 1 011 880 3945 5 www.thegrillhouse.co.za

LET THEM DRINK WHISKY

Some kids acquire a taste for whisky before fizzy drinks. They are the kids of dads who dip their pinky in a smooth single malt to see if the toddler is really theirs. This is the kind of dad that’s hard to impress when it comes to whisky because he’s either tasted or owns all the good stuff. But even the most ardent whisky drinker’s heart will skip a serious beat when you walk into the WhiskyBrother Bar in the Morningside Shopping Centre. From Irish, American, South African, Taiwanese to Japanese, you will find anything and everything you are looking for. There are about 1000 whiskies to taste. The bar is open to the public but there are special incentives

for bar members. Although rumour has it they are all filled up this year, no harm in putting dad on the list for 2019. Yes, this place is that special. Where: Morningside Shopping Centre Rivonia 1 011 883 3762 5 www.thesmokehouseandgrill.co.za

CLOSE - AND ALWAYS A CIGAR

As Mark Twain said, if smoking is not allowed in heaven, I won’t go. So, dads had a delicious steak and some great whisky. Now it’s time to cap the day with a good cigar. There are a couple of places to find a good Churchill or Romeo y Julieta in Jozi. Try one of these: Katzy’s in Rosebank: one of Joburg’s premier cigar lounges with good music, fine cognacs and excellent wine to boot. Where: Shop 2, The Firs, 17-19 Biermann Ave, Rosebank, Johannesburg, 2196 1 011 880 3945 5 www.katzys.co.za The Polo Bar at The Westcliff: With an ‘instagrammable’ view and a wide variety of cigars to choose from, end dad’s special day off in style. Where: 67 Jan Smuts Ave, Westcliff, Johannesburg, 2193 1 011 481 6000 5 www.fourseasons.com Cigar lounge at The Saxon: With its extensive library, this is an intimate, sophisticated after-dinner retreat for lingering over a good cigar and your favourite single malt. DON FASHIONED

Recipe

30ml Don Papa Rum Muddles Sugar 3 dashes Bitters Ice

Method Rum isn’t just for sailors and pirates, but you’ll definitely have a great time sipping on it and pretending to be one. ➊ How it is made: Don Papa is created on the fertile foothills of the active volcano Mt. Kanlaon, where the finest sugar cane is milled to produce sweet, rich molasses. The rum is charcoal filtered to remove any tannins and impurities before being blended to perfection. The combination of the volcanic soil, the quality of the sugar cane, the ageing in oak and the blender’s art come together beautifully to give Don Papa rum its signature rich, smooth taste.

Add Don Papa Rum and muddled sugar to glass, top up with fresh ice & add your bitters. Stir and garnish with orange wedge and rosemary.

➋ Flavours: It is light and fruity on the nose, smooth and delicate in the mouth with a long-textured finish, and offers flavours of vanilla, honey, and candied fruits.

➍ Try one: The perfect way to drink Don Papa is neat, on the rocks, or over a large block of ice melting gradually in your glass. Don Papa is a versatile spirit and also makes wonderful cocktails. Try one of our suggestions! ➎ Available from: All good liquor stores, bars, and restaurants in a 750-ml bottle at 43% Vol. Don Papa retails at

arts&culture

Kimberley Cunningham, an art dealer at the Goodman Gallery, shares the ins and outs of the art world – a highly competitive industry with an almost secret social club, the importance of the online economy and who to watch out for.

BEAUTY IN THE EYE OF THE CURATOR

G

iven that its winter and Netflix and Showmax are exploding with new shows, you’d expect art galleries to be in a tizz about getting people to exhibitions these days. But that’s not the case.

When it comes to what makes a gallery work, of course, excellent artists are essential but there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes with specific nuances to manage as well. “One of the things we have to consider is the balance between local and international work. Increasingly local audiences appreciate seeing work by international artists. Fifteen years ago there was perhaps an idea that only South African art, or at a stretch African art, was relevant to South African audiences. This idea has largely disappeared, and both audiences and artists today understand themselves as already international.” The industry is also fiercely competitive and while the pool of local collectors is growing, this takes time, explains Kimberly. “To take our artists' careers to the next level we have to be visible outside of South Africa, and the most efficient way to do this is to participate in international art fairs. The costs associated with these are enormous, especially when paying Euro art fair bills with Rands.

46

Hello Joburg • June 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

So what makes a successful show? “There are many measures of success in the context of a commercial gallery exhibition. Sales are one measure, but it is definitely not the only, or most important, one. Many of the artists we work with don't make easily saleable work, but the gallery enables them to produce work they might otherwise have been unable to make. At the same time showing this kind of work in the gallery elevates our programme and creates public interest.” But it’s not all one long brush stroke to an end sale. “Working with artists is extremely rewarding, and in a gallery, you get to work with a group of artists over a long period of time. You're privy to their thought processes, their discoveries, their highs and their lows, and for someone who loves art, this is a front row seat.” As for the future of the art gallery in this ever-connected word? “Galleries will certainly have to adapt to the online economy, and some have already made inroads here. It's not as simple as opening up an online shop though since the community around a gallery is

such an important part of the energy that keeps the business going. Many collectors will comfortably buy art online if they are familiar with the work and spot an unmissable deal, and that is not a bad thing. It would be a misapprehension, though, to think that only buying online would be a sound way to build a collection.” – You heard it here first ladies and gents ANY LOCAL ARTISTS WE SHOULD BE LOOKING OUT FOR? HERE’S THE DOWN-LOW FROM KIM Haroon Gunn-Salie recently showed a major sculptural installation on the prestigious New Museum Triennial at the New Museum in New York. Titled 'Senzenina' the piece commemorates those who lost their lives in the Marikana massacre. Other local artists to look out for are performance artist Gabrielle Goliath, photographer Jabulani Dhlamini and painter Jessica Webster, all of whom live in Joburg. @kimbers-c

Art lovers have a real conviction when it comes to gallery exhibits, says Kimberley. “The availability of on-demand entertainment doesn't seem to have affected people's willingness to show up for an exhibition which is a testament to the ardent gallery-goers’ passion for art and the craft.” It also speaks to the unique social scene that exists within the art world. “Galleries generate their own special social scene. There is something unique about consuming art in a gallery with other art enthusiasts. In fact, many of our openings are as much a social event as they are an opportunity to see the work. “

you’ll forget to breathe. Upon arrival, we were greeted with Gin and decadent slabs of Cadbury Milk chocolate. Small and intimate, the generously carpeted floors, rich furnishings and cascading curtains envelop the room. In every bathroom you’ll find Penhaligon’s products refilled and restocked on a daily basis. We had a holy-moly moment because the room was so breathtakingly beautiful. Did we mention our picturesque balcony which is ideal for an afternoon cup of tea? The only issue is we never wanted to leave.

It’s a hotel where time has stood still, it’s classic but not old-fashioned, it's grand but not ostentatious, it's luxury that epitomizes the meeting of knighthood. It’s here where you will discover old world charm and meticulous interior design and quite frankly what more could you ask for when visiting the city of chivalry and culture.

This becomes regularly problematic especially when you are served afternoon tea to the room and a delightful predinner snack too. You’ll never wait for anything and before you’ve thought of asking for a top-up, its already being poured for you (served from the left of course). This hotel and its stellar staff aim to spoil each and every single guest and ensure you leave with the most memorable experience, which for us was the high tea.

You’ll arrive and be enthralled by the excitable concierge who is at your every beck and call (and don’t forget to grab a handful of Minstrels at the front desk). You will not lift a finger all throughout your stay, and as you enter the hotel room,

This once in a generation kind of hotel serves a once in a lifetime high tea experience. A ritual fit for royalty. Served in Cheneston's Restaurant, the Park Lounge or the Conservatory. It is a treat in more ways than one - a delicious array of

Accompanied by a glass of bubbles, this tea practice showcases what the hotel does best, serving world-class quintessential English tradition on a silver platter. This should be, without a doubt at the top of your bucket list. Well-known as an affable boutique hotel it’s no wonder it’s one of the leading hotels of the world. 5 www.milestonehotel.com

Interesting fact: The site of the present hotel once belonged to a druggist and a ham and tongue dealer Address: 39 Buckingham Palace Rd, Westminster, London There isn’t a better address in the world. This is it and the actual hotel doesn’t disappoint either. British hospitality is what you can expect at this luxurious hotel. With perfectly plumped sofas and bold red and white lined wallpapers, it’s a feast for the eyes. There is a rather elegant part

of the restaurant where you can sit and sip through afternoon tea at the palace lounge whilst watching the bypassers casually stroll past Buckingham Palace. This hotel is all about location and of course the fact that your four-legged best friend can join in all the spoils. The rooms and suites are all individually designed with original art and antiques and it is family run and owned. Book the Royal King Room, which is 14 square meters in size and regally themed in honour of past British monarchs. Intricate attention and detail has been paid to every single art piece throughout the hotel and to every gingerly placed piece of cutlery. All characteristics of this hotel have been well thought out. Start your day with breakfast at the English Grill with the poached smoked haddock and butter croissants and end off with a glass of Lanson bubbles and poached salmon with a velvety smooth hollandaise sauce. Prepare to be charmed as waiters serve you dressed in tailcoats. The cherry on top is a nightcap at The New York Bar! With an intense red colour palette that is a celebration in itself, you’ll love how cosily inviting and regal the ambience is, with a Rubens signature Cocktail in hand (a mix of rum, Martell VS, lime juice and cinnamon) and live jazz vibrating in the background, you’re assured a bucket list moment.

THE MAY FAIR HOTEL- TRANSCENDING LEISURE

    

Address: Stratton St, Mayfair, London Upon entering this hotel, which opened in 1927, you’ll expect swank and style and that’s exactly what is delivered. A hotel that is every bit as beautiful as its first impression. It’s no wonder it is the official hotel to London Fashion Week. Staying at The May Fair allows easy access to Buckingham Palace, Bond Street’s exclusive boutiques, art galleries and Berkeley Street’s famous restaurants, the hotel is also moments from Green Park tube station. When staying at this hotel, it would be terribly remiss to not visit The Mayfair district. It’s the luxury quarter of London and a shopper’s dream. It is one of the most affluent districts in London and in the world. Mayfair has garnered a reputation as an international art hub and a historical space. Bourdon House is one of the oldest buildings, constructed between 1723–5. We fell head over heels for this hotel because it’s trendy, it’s contemporary, it’s legendary and it boasts one of the finest dining spots in town- The May Fair Kitchen.

Your day will begin with a bountiful breakfast buffet, be prepared to have seconds.Their muesli and traditional thick Greek yoghurt will make your taste buds do the happy dance and you simply cannot stay at this hotel and not have a sundowner at the May Fair Bar.They have a stunning selection of the finest cocktails, we recommend ordering the Winter Martini, Belvedere vodka infused with marshmallow, Chambord and pineapple juice or try the Apple & Spice cocktail with Hennessy Fine de Cognac, Grand Marnier, apple, kalamansi and persimmon jam. Drooling yet? Well, wait till you tuck into their small plates. Ranging from braised celery and powdered duck to spiced pigeon, they’re all lick-your-lips fantastic. Don’t leave without ordering the brown bread ice cream with salted butter caramel and pear. Also, don’t miss the sign that reads: “On March 22nd, 1927 their Majesties The King and Queen visited the May Fair Hotel and were graciously pleased to make a tour of inspection.” So, hey if it’s fit enough for royalty it’s fit enough for us commoners, right? 5 www.themayfairhotel.co.uk

What was the best part about collaborating with Beast, Tipcee and DJ Tira? The best part of the collaboration was that we got to tap into various energies and in this instance they all came together like a great tasty dish, just like the perfect recipe! Tell us about your inspiration when creating ‘Bhampa’ Beast had released some freestyles on the net and we thought they were dope, so we set a studio date and then the magic happened. Those freestyles inspired the collaboration that led to the birth of bhampa. What is the best part about
