foreword

How would you

celebrate your 40th birthday?

Hello Pretoria is published by Spinner Communications (Pty) Ltd. Established in 1980 My 40th is around Hellopretoria.co.za the corner… I would Spinnercom.com book a Clifton Bungalow for the weekend to enjoy with my family and close friends.

Hello, Pretoria! I came across this on Instagram the other day: later that night ,I held an atlas in my lap ran my fingers across the whole world and whispered where does it hurt? it answered everywhere, everywhere, everywhere. -Warsan Shire We are all hurting. The Corona Virus is challenging and humbling humanity worldwide. All I can say is that I am so glad that we are all in this together. We’re not alone even when we are locked down. In this time, we need to find the things we are most thankful for and keep them close. My first day of lock down was tough. My husband is working from home during this time and normally has meetings all day, which means I still look after the kids most of the time. It’s something none of us can change. It’s just how it is, and we need to deal. #Lockdownday1 was full of tantrums, crying babies and frustration for me and made me realise that I needed to focus on finding the little things in every day that made the day good; the things that made me laugh, made me appreciate, made me give thanks. I have therefore decided to place my lockdown positives on my Instagram page every day. Feel free to share yours with us by tagging @hellopretoriamag. Also follow me on @renatetravel to see my lockdown positives and let’s find (or create) some light in this darkness. On another note – I am just wondering, are we still categorising mealtimes in this time? Is breakfast still breakfast or do we abide by airport rules during lock down? And, is it okay to go to work in PJs now? Stay home. Stay safe. Happy reading, HP!

Combatting Covid-19 Your ultimate lockdown survival guide

As we are now in full lockdown due to the Coronavirus taking the country by storm, it’s clear that life as we know it has completely changed. We are all indoors for the foreseeable future and a lot of us are getting very bored, very quickly. Although the prospect might seem daunting, have no fear. We have compiled a plan to keep you fit, fed and having tons of fun along the way.

Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Take Yuppiechef ’s cooking course valued at R3000 for free! Join professional chefs, including Peter Goffe-Wood, Sarah Graham and Franck Dangereux in a series of online cooking courses. Through a series of video tutorials you'll learn to master popular recipes, techniques and cooking styles from the comfort of home and at your own pace.

Now is the perfect time to start your own herb- and veggie garden. Pick n Pay Hyper stores are still allowed to sell bulbs and seeds. Re-use your old pots, get your hands dirty and reap the veggies in a few months! This is also something that the kids will thoroughly enjoy.

Learn how to pickle and can your own food. Perhaps you couldn’t eat your way through your fruit and veggies quick enough (because pandemic chocolates are a thing, right?) and you really don’t want to throw them away. Pickle them! Once again, there are so many videos on Youtube.

Words Carli Manser Images Supplied

Food • Unfortunately, all restaurants and takeaway services are closed during the lockdown and as much as we are going to miss all the comfort and all the delectable food that Pretoria’s restaurants offer, now is the perfect time to experiment with different recipes! Learn how to make your favourite dish and become a pro at baking that perfect banana bread.

Entertainment One of the nastier aspects of the pandemic is that it turns your friends and all that you do to show them affection into a deadly threat. And yet, in this challenging time we need our friends more than ever. Therefore, you need a daily cocktail hour! Dress up, light candles, have some snacks and drinks and have a catch-up session with your best mates. This will reduce anxiety and boost your immune system significantly! Watch your favourite show with your friends through Netflix Party! Go to www.netflixparty. com. •

This is the perfect time to let your hair down and do everything that’s been on your list for years. Read books, watch your favourite movies and shows, paint, draw, cook, bake, have date nights, build forts and bond with your family.

Mental Health • We need to look after our mental health now more than ever. Keep chatting to friends and family on a daily basis. Keep your eye on social media to see what other people are doing to keep busy. •

Journal on a daily basis. Remember that you still have full control over your thoughts and feelings and if, at times, it gets overwhelming or you feel anxious, writing them down can make the world’s difference. Follow @theimmigrationlighthouse on Instagram. She has been sharing 30 daily writing prompts as from Monday, the 28th of March.

Download the Headspace app and do a daily meditation session to help clear your head. Remember to still get outside for some fresh air!

Kids • It’s vital for kids to keep to a daily schedule. A daily rhythm settles the body down and provides a framework for children to keep learning and playing in a balanced way.

Fitness It is vital to get our hearts pumping at least once a day to keep a healthy immune system (and to stay sane). •

Keep an eye on Discovery’s Facebook page where they are sharing workout videos, fitness tips and insights to keep you motivated during the lockdown. They have also lowered their Vitality Active Rewards to only 300 points.

There is a variety of apps to download whether you want to focus on cardio, weight training or yoga. Try Nike Training Club, Jefit or Daily Yoga.

Youtube has thousands of workout videos. PE with Joe is a popular choice for adults and kids all over the world and here you’ll get a fun workout every time!

Don’t try to homeschool your children. You are not a teacher, and this will just add stress and unnecessary anxiety for you and the child. Rather take time to teach them a new skill like playing the guitar or ask them to help you with lunch. Have them do chores and engage in one educational activity per day. This will provide the mental stimulation that they need.

Let loose on the rules for screen time. Children who are homebound for 24 hours a day are bound to spend more time in front of screens. Just make sure that it’s not cartoons all day long. Let them watch a documentary on space or nature (David Attenborough might just become their new hero), let them play interactive educational games and let them exercise with the WII. It will also let you have a little time for self-care, which you so desperately need.

Discover the alchemist experience with Copperhead Gin

With tasting notes like orange zest and cardamom, mixed with juniper that gives a light sweetness, you can’t help but indulge in Copperhead Gin. Copperhead hit the market hard by swimming upstream. While all the competitors were making Western Dry Gins, Copperhead returned to the roots of gin and created a London Dry Gin. Distilled at the Copperhead Distillery in Belgium, the gin is sweet and citrusy on the nose with a pine finish. The best way to enjoy this gin is with Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic and an orange peel and coriander as garnish.

MMAStudio Braam van

Imagine being part of a class that is energetic, fun and pushes you to achieve your goals, while simultaneously developing your skills and helping to combat stress. Infinity MMA is exactly that!

S

ensei Braam van Dyk is the owner and head coach at Infinity MMA Studio. Braam started kickboxing at the age of six. He won the South African and African Championships in 1992 and 1994. Since then, he won the Light Heavy MFC title belt in 2015 and he has also received his first degree blackbelt in Shidokan and Kickboxing. We had a chat with him to find out more about his passion project. Tell us a more about Infinity MMA Studio? We are a Mixed Martial Arts and Fitness Academy based in the East of Pretoria. Our primary foundation or art form is Shidokan Karate and Kickboxing, while focusing on the techniques needed for ground or submission fighting through the art of Brazilian Jiujitsu. Why did you open the studio? Primarily when we first opened our doors it was to teach everyday people and students to fight. I quickly noticed that what I was teaching my students and the way I was coaching had a valuable impact on their lives. I started studying Human Behavior and Life Performance. Today our facility and coaching are aimed at teaching students to be martial artists rather than fighters. By using martial arts as a tool, we help individuals deal with daily stress and anxiety and assist with a healthy lifestyle.

10

What can someone expect to learn at your MMA Studio? Our students learn to defend themselves through boxing, kickboxing, Shidokan Karate and Muay Thai. We also teach ground fighting skills through Brazilian Jiujitsu. Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

How beginner-friendly are your classes? Our classes are quite exclusive, which means that they are limited to fifteen students in a class. This allows us to deliver high-end coaching while focusing on everyone’s needs from beginners to pro athletes. How often would you recommend someone to attend your classes? As a starting point I advise all my students to at least get a decent workout in twice a week. As you become fitter and more skilled you can always step it up with cross training or additional classes. Can a person attend your classes just for fitness? Most definitely. The majority of my students are with us with a focus on fitness and a general healthier lifestyle. What is your dream/vision for Infinity MMA Studio? My dream and vision for our studio has never changed. I dream of having a facility that can help people to become better versions of themselves. I would like to introduce crossfit to our facility at some stage, but I want to always be grounded in creating everyday true martial artists. There has never been a better time to support local entrepreneurs than right now. Our country is bursting at the seams with local entrepreneurs, including these four inspiring active wear brands. Viwa Active Ever walked into a high-end sports clothing store and thought to yourself: "This brand only caters to tall, Amazonian skinny women - what about my bottom, hips and calves?" This is exactly how the Viwa brand was born. Founded by two friends, Eva Kirsten and Vannesa Tshabangu with a vision to create an eclectic brand, they are known for their white sculpted leggings that are non-see through. They cater to all body types with a hint of South African flair in their designs. Winter sun exposure How to care for your skin in winter

With the winter blues sometimes creeping in, basking in the sunshine is a way to boost Vitamin D and morale, but winter sun can be just as harmful. Here are some sure-fire ways to protect your skin during the upcoming winter months.

J

ust because the weather is gloomy and cold, it does not mean that the sun’s effects are lessened at all. A common misconception is that the sun’s UV rays are weaker on colder, cloudy days. If you don’t take proper precautions and apply the same care as you would in summer, your risk for permanent skin damage and melanoma stays high. Applying sunscreen, an SPF lip balm and a hat each and every day goes without saying. We all want a gorgeous tanned body all year round and sometimes revert to sunbed tanning, which is just as harmful as smoking! If you are wary of your Vitamin D intake, remember that you can also absorb Vitamin D through foods such as egg yolks, fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel and fortified milk.

Words Carli Manser Image Supplied

Unfortunately, excessive sun exposure also accelerates aging of the skin and can cause hyperpigmentation. It is never too early to start caring for your aging skin and we’ve found products that can even reverse some of the effects of sun damage and give you a more radiantly youthful appearance. Lamelle Nourish This product is all about giving your skin the good stuff it needs to stay in balance. A potent mix of the best and most precise antioxidants protects your skin cells, cell structure and boosts your immune system.

Pioneering DNA damage-correcting enzymes help to repair recent DNA damage caused by free radicals. Nourish maintains youthful skin and halts aging skins at any age. Lamelle Helase Winter wrinkles are a reality as the dry climate and sudden cold cause more wrinkles to appear almost overnight, no matter your age group. And then unchecked sun damage just increases your chances of developing more wrinkles in winter. Helase 50+ not only contains the basic SPF and antioxidants to ward off UV rays, it also contains collagen boosting ingredients. When it comes to preventing wrinkles, it’s important to invest in 365 sun protection.

Environ Gold CIT Roller and Avance Elixir When used in conjunction, these two products work together in harmony to create amazing results. The CIT Roller is a needling instrument specially crafted for delicate areas. The Avance Elixir helps to reduce the damaging effects of UV rays and pollution on the skin, whilst improving the skin’s overall tone, texture, and appearance by minimising the visible signs of ageing.

restaurant of the month

Out with the new and in with the old

This local neighbourhood café epitomises a visit to a café in Rome, while at the same time making you feel right at home here in Pretoria.

Gavin, who grew up in Pretoria, played rugby in Italy for a few years and he lived in Rome which brought about the idea for this vintage Italian-inspired café. He wanted the atmosphere of the café to have the same incandescent feel of a Roman café. With the tableside parking, outside seating, delicious pizza, homemade ice cream and a regular Vespa gang visiting, he has definitely bred that feeling well. Here you can expect to find a menu filled with simple yet enticing dishes. From delicious brekkies like a ham and cheese croissant and a breakfast bun (aka a babelas bun), to lunches like a trout sarmie or their famous tomato soup. They also have a dish of the day - a big hit with the regulars - and their plant-based menu, filled with vegan goodness, is definitely something to rave about. From the chickpea omelette to the popular vegan mac ’n cheese, comfort food has never tasted this good. Gavin’s inspiration for his menu is good, clean fun. He has no speciality, because all of his dishes are a treat.

16

Tried and tested We tried the beef lasagne and the fish cake meal, which both tasted like home. The beef lasagne was a firm favourite and the fish cakes were to die for. We also had the most incredible peanut brittle flavoured Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

ice-cream. Gavin refers to it as opium flavour due to its proclivity to addiction and we can absolutely attest to that! Gavin’s deep devotion to his community lets him offer a level of personal service you rarely find elsewhere. He wants Corner Shop to be a space where people feel at home and keep returning to. He wants you to have your business meetings there in the week and bring your family back on the weekend.

PS: On every first Thursday of the month there’s an Ice-cream, coffee and rides event at Corner Shop where you can show off your vintage car or motorcycle. And, on every first Friday of the month, the Vespa gang unites for a hearty breakfast. Keen to showcase your collector’s item? Corner Shop’s the place!

Sneak peek: Gavin will be introducing his pizza cart soon! A mobile pizza baking oven that will be making drool-worthy pizzas! So, keep an eye out, HP. Shop 5A, 103 Club Ave, Waterkloof Heights, Pretoria, 0081 m 012 534 3806 E @ cornershopsa Q @ cornershopsa

“A coffee between new friends offers 40 years of friendship” - Turkish saying

It might not have been over a cup of coffee, but we have most certainly made new friends and bonded over delicious Turkish cuisine and sweetened apple tea.

t Turkish Table the plain, yet striking décor style had us in awe. White walls are colored with gorgeous hand painted Turkish dishes, the roof is covered with mosaic lamps and there are a handful of selected Turkish memorabilia. We were welcomed by Yunus Kılıc - owner and manager. He served us an apple tea and a Turkish tea in dainty glass cups - the start of a culinary experience of note.

Tried and tested Our starters consisted of a roti with ezme, cacik, humus and baba ganoush. For mains we had more roti, salad, hot sauce and a meat platter consisting of lamb kebabs, shish kebab, köfte (meatballs), lamb chops and tender chicken fillets. Dessert was the showstopper. As it arrived, Yunus’ face lit up as the baklava and künefe (pastry layered with cheese and flame grilled in a syrup) is his pride and joy. You can’t go wrong at a restaurant where food is made with passion. Duncan Yard, 1204 Prospect St, Hatfield E theturkishtable

With his father also being in the restaurant business, it was in Yunus’ blood and opening the first branch of the Turkish Table in Johannesburg and later on the branch at Duncan Yard, Pretoria was inevitable. Professional cooking in your very own kitchen

Growing up, people who hired chefs to cook at their homes were stereotyped as rich and often a little snobbish. Today, with the strict laws on drinking and driving, we don’t think it’s such a bad idea. We went ahead and tried it and we might just do it again (once we’re done with #selfisolation, that is).

C

hef & Guests is an experience every Pretoria foodie should have. Simply invite one of the platform’s chefs into your home and he or she will cook up a storm while you have the opportunity to enjoy having guests over. With a presence in Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg you can even make use of this brilliant concept elsewhere. Booking your chef entitles you to an evening of your own private chef, a three- to six-course meal, full service and even a complete postdinner clean-up. Seriously, when last did you walk into your kitchen after dinner with friends and find your kitchen sparkling clean? It’s like magic! Our chef for the evening was Chef Rico Carlinsky, who specialises in modern African, cosmopolitan, molecular and classic French cuisines. His menus range from R350 to R550 per person and considering the price you pay at most restaurants, having this fine dining experience in the comfort of your own home is worth every penny.

18

We were offered Menu 4 (you can find all the menus on Chef & Guests’ website). We could also couple the different courses with our own wines (at our own cost) and kicked off the evening with Deetlefs Estate’s MCC (the only white MCC from Pinotage in the world) and would not have had it any other way! Chef Rico’s amuse bouche was served on our very own wooden platter: Rice Tuille, Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Beetroot Dust and Roast Carrot Hummus. Yum! We coupled the starter – Cured Egg Yolk, Duck Breast Prosciutto, Cucumber Gel and Apple Crisp – with Avondale’s Cyclus, another winner that went well with all the courses right up to the main. The fish course was Line Fish Ceviche, Avocado Mousse and Quinoa Crumble, followed by a pallet cleanser: Tomato, Basil and Vanilla Granité. Chef Rico spoiled us with a delish Beef Fillet for the main course and we could not stop talking about it for the rest of the evening. It came with Boudin Blanc, Grilled Polenta, Mushroom Foam (the absolute favourite of the evening) and Roasted Corn. The surprises did not stop there, though. The cheese course came in the form of Labné, Sweet Parmesan Foam, Toasted Pumpkinseed Crumble, Rose Gel and Melon Preserve and the dessert had us dining in awe with a Red Wine Poached Pear Charlotte with Caramel Mousse and Sweet Basil Espuma – a combination you’d never have thought could work. We paired the main, cheese course and dessert with Avondale’s La Luna 2013 – what a treat! Chef & Guests is definitely something to look forward to for when Covid 19 is something of the past. Wine,

wonderfulOurwine top picks If you are someone who enjoys entertaining, we’ve rounded up some tried and tested wines to add to your list of things with which you can impress your guests the next time they come over. Avondale Wine Avondale Estate’s ethos means soil is life and from that they create unique, naturally made, slow wines. Their wines are classic and full of life and character – ideal for an exciting gathering. For us, this wine is one of the special kinds and one that you drink to remember. Avondale’s Cyclus 2016 is one of our favourites with hints of violets, peach and frangipani on the nose. Its creamy, long-structured finish puts it right at the top our list. Additionally, their Anima 2016 – a softly wooded Chenin Blanc – is another favourite. It has a nose that develops intriguingly in the glass and the hints of honey makes it an absolute winner. 1 www.avondalewine.co.za

Roodeberg Wine For your next relaxed get-together (perhaps celebrating the end of lock down), be sure to get yourself a bottle of Roodeberg’s Classic Rosé 2019 – a salmon-pink rosé described as the perfect patio wine. It’s a blend predominantly made of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and winemaker Louwritz Louw says it is fresh and crisp with good acidity and a long, fruity finish. We just love the subtle aromas of strawberry, candy floss and raspberry intertwined with hints of rose petals and Turkish delight that come with a wine that also presents very well in the glass. P.S. It goes well with tapas, salads and sushi, which means it’s perfect for your next cook-off with friends! Which ever you choose, these wines won’t let you down. Enjoy! 1 www.roodeberg.com

Deetlefs Wine Estate With the Deetlefs Wine Estate being the second oldest wine estate in South Africa, you cannot go wrong by adding a couple of their bottles to your collection. The bottles will also add some class, looking all fancy and impressive. Have your guests gasp in awe of the only white MCC from Pinotage in the world with the Deetlefs Estate Methodé Cap Classique 2017. The blend of 85% Pinotage and 15% Chardonnay is perfect to kick off any special evening with a nose of baked apples, fresh lime, cherries and raspberries. To add some lightness to your event, consider adding Deetlefs’ Stonecross Pinotage Rosé 2019 to the mix. Its strawberry sorbet entry and salty finish makes it a lovely wine to drink all day long and goes very well with Parma ham and ripe figs. Alternatively have your guests enjoy a glass of the Stonecross Chenin Blanc 2019, a blend of 97% Chenin Blanc and 3% Semillon. It’s a crisp wine with flavours of green apple, nectarine and pineapple. 1 www.deetlefs.com

leisure activities April is packed with public holidays, two long weekends and now also a prolonged holiday due to the Coronavirus. We’ve compiled a list of the best things to do to give you and each member of your family an unforgettable bonding experience. IMPORTANT: Always remember to apply social distancing. If you or any of your family members feel just a tad under the weather, distance yourself completely, especially from elderly family members, kids and people with compromised immune systems. Do not attend any family gatherings, but rather spend time one-on-one, if you are sure that you are 100% healthy. Grandparents Our grandparents need an extra hand during this trying time. Go do their shopping for them, pick up their prescriptions and stock up on necessities until you can find the time to visit again. Bring them hand sanitisers, soap, toilet paper and long-life products and educate them on how to properly take care of themselves. Make sure not to come in direct contact with them - leave the supplies at their doorstep and talk through the window. Take time to cook them delicious freezer meals that they can keep on hand. Soups, chicken pie, quiches and lasagne cups are great options. Just by knowing that you’re thinking of them and taking care of them will mean the world to them!

under Lock Down

Who says you can’t live leisurely while being locked down? With a bit of creativity and a tad of crazy, these 21 days should be a breeze!

I

n a world where we have so many options to choose from when it comes to our spare time, it’s difficult to imagine spending your leisure time under lock down. We, however, have a theory that this time is the universe’s way of telling us to slow down; to remember how our parents and their parents spent their leisure time. Now is the time, HP, to relearn while you relax. Yes, we know that lock down does not necessarily mean 24/7 leisure time, but you are certainly going to be at home more and you can just as well spend that time wisely instead of getting frustrated with yourself and the people you are locked down with. Card games When last have you played a game of Canasta or Bridge? Use lock down as an opportunity to relearn your card game rules and become an expert at something you’ve done ages ago. Find the game rules on www. gamerules.com. Escape to the garden If you have a garden, use it as your escape when the walls start creeping in on you. If you’re a planner, you’ll most definitely have

22

Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

some kind of a schedule as to who works and plays when. Don’t use your garden time as gardening time. Save the gardening chores for Saturdays. Your garden time should be fun for everyone – play charades or touchies, run through the sprinkler, play soccer, throw hoops, have a dance-off. This is as much for adults as for kids and might just lighten the mood. Rainy day, indoor play Some of us might fear those rainy days as that means we’ll be locked down and locked in. Keeping a clear (and creative) mind will get you through those days and you might even remember them best when telling your grandkids about all this craziness one day! Use rainy days to watch slideshows of the images on your phones and computers and reminisce about previous experiences and plan new ones. After all, lock down won’t be forever. Hopefully you’ve got a Wacky Box for the kids at hand. If not, make your own. Wacky Box is a box full of surprise indoor and outdoor activities with a guidebook and kids love unpacking it. Choose one activity per day and let them play.

Tips to keep calm during this time: • Let go. If colouring the wall with chalk keeps your two-year-old from screaming while you are pre-occupied with something else, let her. It might be a mess, but it washes off. •

Mind over matter. Before you act or react, think.

Stick to the routine. Even though the routine might be all twisted, try to keep to the general routine of breakfast around the table, daytime naps and the usual bath routine if you have kids. Same goes for your routine if you’re without kids – keep to your morning routine of coffee in bed (if you’re usually that lucky!) and your nightcap. In fact, perhaps make it two nightcaps for these 21 days!

Kedar Herita A trifecta of history, cuisine and nature

Kedar Lodge offers an experience unlike any other in South Africa. While consuming vast amounts of historical information, you are surrounded by rare and diversified nature.

Everywhere you lay your eyes on at Kedar Heritage Lodge there is memorabilia, a piece of history, artefacts or statues to be seen. The collections include full uniforms from soldiers fighting in the war, paintings and photographs, weapons, an array of badges, handwritten documents (even one signed by Queen Victoria), and a variety of household items. Kedar houses memorials for prominent figures in history, sculpted by the ever so talented Zimbabwean artist, Adam Madebe. There are memorials in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, Sol Plaatje, Jan Smuts, Cecil John Rhodes and the impressive Sarel “Rooi Bul” Oosthuizen Gun to name a few. An interesting glimpse into the war is also encapsulated in the Soldier’s Memorial, which includes statues of black, Indian, Boer and British soldiers, all in their traditional uniforms.

26

Another must-see attraction is the Paul Kruger Country House Museum. Kedar is built on part of Paul Kruger’s farm, Boekenhoutfontein and includes three houses originally built by him and Hello Pretoria • April 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

his son, Pieter Kruger. These historical buildings showcase a fascinating insight into Paul, his wife Gezina and their sixteen children’s lives. You can also expect to see Paul Kruger’s personal Bible, a bellows organ, clothing, a spectacularly crafted dining set and numerous gifts given to Kruger by visiting dignitaries. In close proximity are family graves, a rock formation where he prayed daily and a school building that he built for his own children and children from the surrounding farms. Apart from the stunning natural scenery at Kedar lodge, you can stay in a variety of rooms all inspired by traditional African homes with stone walls and thatched roofs. The lakeside cottages allow you to see a whole ecosystem come together and the three restaurants envelop a unique African experience. The Armoury restaurant offers an exclusive buffet of wonderfully prepared South African dishes and while you eat, you can marvel at the fine collection of South African War military memorabilia. he cultural experience commences as you enter Kedar Lodge. The brainchild of Robert Forsyth, Kedar Heritage Lodge can only be described as a true Out of Africa experience. We’ve had the amazing privilege of having Andre Wedepohl, an incredibly well-read historian, as our tour guide during our visit. Not only is he a welcoming and pleasant person, but his historical knowledge is astonishing, and we were so grateful to have had a well-informed look into the South African War.

age Lodge 5min With Robert Forsyth What first ignited your passion to learn about the South African War? It was total ignorance. I’ve heard people talk about it and no one said the same thing. So, I had to find out for myself. Once you learn about all the stories and the emotion behind it, it is hard to stop searching for the truth. What keeps driving your passion? There is always so much more to learn and artefacts to discover. A museum should never stand still; people come, and they want to hear new stories and see new things. The story of the war, however inhumane, deserves to be told. What are Kedar’s plans for 2020? We would like to disseminate as much history to all South Africans as possible, so that everyone can find out where they came from. We would like to do more heritage tours, including school groups. I believe that we have something good to tell and we would like to get that across. Who is someone that you find interesting? I would like to chip away at many people to see if I can find gold underneath. What is your most coveted artefact? The Boer hat badges. No one knew that they existed. Paul Kruger also had secret police. There are only three secret police badges in existence, and I have one of those, which I’m extremely proud of. Why was the Easter egg hunt invented? To prove that children can find things when they’re actually looking for them!

Easter Sunday is a religious holiday to some and a family holiday for others, but how did the bunny and decorative eggs get involved? Read to find out.

T

here's no talk in the Bible about a long-eared, cotton-tailed Easter Bunny, nor are there references to children decorating and hunting for eggs. Real rabbits do not even lay eggs. Upon doing further research, we learned that bunnies, Easter eggs and fluffy, yellow chicks all stem from pagan roots. According to the University of Florida's Center for Children's Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration can be traced back to the 13th-century, where people worshipped several gods and goddesses. Eostra (which later became Easter) was the goddess of spring and fertility, and her symbol was the rabbit because of their high reproduction rate. Spring (in the USA) also symbolises new life and rebirth and eggs are an ancient symbol of fertility. By 1680, the first story about a rabbit laying eggs and hiding them in a garden was published in Germany and then brought over to the United States, where it became commercialised. It is so interesting to find out about the history of Easter. While you are hiding eggs for the children on the 12th of April, think back to how this wonderful tradition came about. And perhaps impress a few friends with your newfound knowledge!

Tented Suites The tent camps are just the epitome of luxury and comfort. Situated privately in the indigenous bushveld, there are twenty safari-tents, of which six are family units. The six luxury tents come complete with a private daybed out on the deck, which is perfect for enjoying a glass of bubbly on a lazy afternoon. All tented suites are appointed with a full bathroom (with a stunning sunken bath!). The luxury rooms also offer a fully stocked mini bar as well as tea and coffee making facilities. Air conditioning throughout ensure that guests can enjoy year-round temperature controlled tented accommodation. There is also turn-down service! Lying in bed at night, you can hear the far cries of jackals and if you listen very closely, the low growl of a lion! Be woken up naturally by a choir of birds. Step out onto your little wooden porch for some fresh air and a cup of coffee before you get ready for your early-morning game drive. Cuisine A full buffet is offered at each meal. In the morning, you can expect a full English breakfast, with fresh fruit, bread, preserves and even sweet delicacies, such as croissants and cinnamon swirls. For lunch- light seafood dishes, build-your-own-salads, a vegetarian option, sun-dried tomato pesto pasta, succulent chicken pieces and pork ribs. And on a Sunday, you may be spoiled with a traditional South African menu of rice, potatoes, veggies, salads and a heritage dish (we had Impala bobotie). The food is such an amazing treat and a big part of your stay. Each meal is an absolute taste-sensation and we promise that you will leave round-belly every time! Game drives There are two daily game drives- the sunrise and sunset game drive, that has a duration of three hours each. It is so incredibly humbling to drive through the bushveld, seeing our breathtaking country at its most beautiful. Your drives will be filled with a magnitude of wildlife, from small critters like meerkat and dung beetles to birds like the hornbill and the vulture! We even saw a secretary bird looking for snakes. We were awe-struck by three of the Big 5! We caught three elephants on their way back from the watering hole, a mama rhino with her calf on their early-morning grazing session and a pack of lions lazily chilling in the grass. Furthermore, we saw seven big hippos, loads of antelope, a black-backed jackal, monkeys, giraffes and to top it all off: a three-meter crocodile! With a Safari Plains’ trained rangers, you will not be disappointed with your wildlife observations. When you’re not out eating fantastic food or exploring the bushveld, enjoy some of the lodge’s many other amenities! Spend the day by the swimming pool. The barmen are so wonderfully friendly, they bring you drinks all day long. Tip: Ask for their gin surprise. You won’t be disappointed! If you’re looking for something a tad more extraordinary, you can pre-book any of the following with the lodge: • Safari’s in open 4 x 4 vehicles • Horseback safari’s • Star Gazing • Team Building Activities (conferencing venue available) • Eco adventure safari’s, which include quad biking, guided bush- and bird walks • Hot air balloon safari’s From the moment we walked into the Safari Plains lobby, it was clear that this would be a stay unlike any other. Every small detail was well thought out and tended to by staff with abundant laughs. Go and explore for yourself, as there are so many gems that Safari Plains that are yet to be discovered! Martin Bester

Martin accompanies thousands of people on their daily commute to work. Most famous for hosting the 'Breakfast with Martin Bester' every weekday morning from 6am to 9am on Jacaranda FM, he is also a beloved musician. We got to know him a little better!

Tell us more about your childhood I was born in Bethal, Mpumalanga and then my parents moved to PE. I went to primary-, high school and varsity in PE. My mom was a nursing sister at the local hospital and my father was a truck driver who later worked himself up to training and managing. In my early life, I hated going to creches, so I spent a lot of my days in hospital passages, keeping myself amused. I loved growing up in PE!

Tell us how you feel about ‘Good Morning Angels?’ Helping someone and making a difference never gets old. South Africans are the most generous at times when things are at their toughest. It just restores our faith in humanity. There are many times when we doubt kindness and generosity and Good Morning Angels just reminds us that there is an abundance of kindness and benevolence in South Africa. What can we look forward to from Martin Bester in 2020? More music and definitely more touring. I want to put out more music this year. It makes me so excited to get that first draft of a song back- I feel like a kid in a candy store!

How did you become a radio host? It was never really part of my plan. Music, acting and sport has always been passions of mine, but radio came along in varsity. They took us on a first year tour and we passed the campus radio station and the hosts looked so cool. They had this notice on the door, saying that they were looking for new presenters. My name was first on the list and I got in! In my final year, the regional radio station, Algoa, contacted us and said that they were looking for new presenters. The rest is history.

What is your favourite spot in Pretoria? I moved to Irene last year, after living in Johannesburg for more than 17 years and I love the area! My favourite has to be the Irene Dairy Farm. I eat breakfast there often. I also love the Village Bistro’s oxtail and mash. Railways is another favourite, as they have live shows on the regular and they always keep things interesting. I’m looking forward to exploring the Village in Hazelwood.

What is the most fulfilling part of your job? The fact that I love it and it is something that I want to do. Meaning something to someone is also a big part of it. Something that you’ve played, said or done that’s just changed someone’s mood. I sometimes get to be that person that cheer people up by playing their favourite song or saying something funny. I am a sociable person and I am constantly interacting with people, which in turn makes me very happy.
