ight up until all this craziness unfolded, I tried to take a walk around Rosebank, where I live, every evening. My heart broke on every street seeing how many passion projects were under threat last month – from restaurants that weren’t even breaking even but still paying their staff, to art galleries that are so niche they shouldn’t even exist. However, if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that South Africans can handle anything that’s thrown our way. Even though there’s a sense that South Africa as a whole has been put on pause, there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll get through this together. One day soon this will all be over, but until then we’ll help support Joburgers during this time of uncertainty. Everyone will be spending more time than usual in their homes, so we’ve got you covered with all our regulars that are aimed to inspire you to start planning your days for when you do get back out there.
Other must-reads in this issue are cooking classes to try this April that are guaranteed to sharpen your culinary skills in Leisure Activities, as well as art collecting 101 for first-time buyers in Arts & Culture. I also recommend checking out our Entertainment section for our all sorts of entertainment for the ultimate lazy weekend in, including a book, a series, a podcast and a cookbook. As you can tell, we’re still giving you the best of the City of Gold, whether or not the city is at its best. It doesn’t matter if you’re going through this on your own, with a partner or with family – I urge you to get in touch and let me know how we can help make it easier. Stay healthy and be safe this month, Hello Joburgers!

We know that life won’t go back to normal the second the nationwide #lockdown is over and that many people will self isolate and practise social distancing even after it’s said and done. So, our Cover Feature is all about bringing the Joburg fun indoors by supporting many small independent businesses we love that will be hurting this month at the end of the 21 days. These businesses are all doing innovative things to make staying at home while supporting small businesses that much easier, from offering healthy plant-based freezer meals to selling bottled cocktails you can serve at home. In our Dining Out regulars this month, our Restaurant of the Month is Jintara Restaurant – formerly Erawan in Riverside Shopping Centre in Bryanstan – and you’ll be delighted to know that this Thai food, dim sum and sushi innovator certainly hasn’t dulled since it rebranded. Hotspots in the spotlight include Flames at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, where you can experience a champagne brunch fit for royalty, and Sweet Tea and Chickadee – Jozi’s first Southern American eatery serving biscuits and the most delicious hummingbird cake.

How to prevent
CORONAVIRUS from spreading
Tips to keep you, your family and the rest of Joburg healthy It’s a stressful time as the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to climb across South Africa and the world. The number-one question locals and tourists are asking is what they can do to prevent it from spreading. So, here are some simple, specific steps you can take to protect yourself and others from becoming infected.
Get your hands soapy and scrub, scrub, scrub! Yes, you’ve heard it a million times before, but washing your hands – often – is one of the most important things you can do. While many Joburg businesses in the service industry from restaurants to beauty salons have made it their top priority to follow the strictest cleanliness regime at all times, we still recommend getting to a sink and washing your hands wherever possible. This is especially important after you’ve been out in public or have touched a common surface that others may have touched, after coughing and sneezing, and before cooking and eating. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and be sure to get every part of your hands and fingers. No sink nearby? Using hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol content will do the trick until you can get to a sink. Hit pause on all types of touching If you’re feeling fine, you might think it’s fine to hug, kiss shake hands, high five, fist bump and rub elbows. However, doctors have advised that whether you’re feeling under the weather or not, it’s important to keep some space between you when you’re around other people – an arm’s length will do. When you’re around others, also make sure you cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and then wash your hands straight away to stop viral particles and germs from spreading. Thoroughly disinfect all common use surfaces At home, it’s so important to thoroughly sanitise common use surfaces including countertops, bathrooms, computers and remotes using disinfectant spray or wipes – Dettol is a great brand to use. Cleaning your cellphone is also a must. If you visit a local restaurant, wipe down the table and menu before and after use. The same goes if you visit the gym – wipe down the machines and weights as well as maintain a distance of one to two metres between you and other exercisers. Stay home and read Hello Joburg Magazine Limiting how much time you spend out in public or around others is key to preventing the spread of germs. So, especially if you’re not feeling well, work from home if you can, walk or travel by car instead of public transportation like the Gautrain wherever possible, and avoid travelling for leisure (both domestically and internationally). While you’re spending some time indoors, check @HelloJoburgMag out on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – we promise we’ll keep you entertained until this is all over!
What to do while self-isolating Be a couch potato and proud: Netflix and chill should be the first task for everyone. Watch that bad TV show you’ve always wanted to, finish that series … you can do it, you got this! Turn over a new page (literally): After you’ve watched finished your series, get into a fluffy robe, pour yourself a glass of wine and snuggle up with one of your untouched books. Dust off the board games: When last did you play a bit of Monopoly or Cluedo? Or even Scrabble? Declutter your home: Forget spring cleaning – it’s corona cleaning time! Cull your pantry and cupboards or rearrange your lounge and living areas. While you’re at it, disinfect everything too. Work out in your PJs: You can do lunges, squats, weights and pushups all in the comfort of your own home. You can even do weights with your cat or books if you have to. Get your cook on: Whip out an old cookbook and turn up the heat in the kitchen. This is a good idea especially after you’ve cleaned out your pantry. Hello Joburg • April 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

What inspired you to create Flexi? I personally have a very active lifestyle and like to try a lot of different sports and change up my routine often. Also, I’m always on the road, so finding time to train is an issue. That’s why we created Flexi, to allow flexibility in your training schedule, training where and when you can. How long has it taken you to launch this app? It was over three years in the making. There were various obstacles that got in our way from lengthy investment deals to insurance companies dragging feet. It finally all came together, and we launched Flexi in November 2019. What were some of the biggest challenges of creating an app? The cost of building an app is the major one. The user interface also takes a lot of thought and workshopping. Then there’s the technology as there are a lot of features you would like to have, but not all of them are possible with the budget or the time. Our main point was to make sure the tech worked and that it was simple to use. What are some of your goals for the company? We would like to expand globally but first we would like this concept to work in South Africa. Where are some of your favourite places to workout in Joburg? HotPod Yoga, Cycle Zone and The Body Works to name a few. But that’s only when I travel to Joburg as I’m based in Cape Town. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business? Make sure you keep at it. If you believe in your business and brand, then you need to keep pushing. Sometimes you might think that it’s easier to just give up but that’s when your drive needs to kick in. Hello Joburg • April 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

SHOP IT like it’s cold How to curate your autumn wardrobe
By this time of year, the heat of summer is nothing but a memory and hitting the rails in search of some new fall sweaters is at the top of every Joburger’s mind – or at least ours. That’s why we’ve rounded up some fabulous tips and tricks for shopping for your seasonal wardrobe. Preparation is everything While autumn may not seem like the best time for spring cleaning and decluttering, we could argue that it’s also a new beginning and should be treated as such. So, before you head off to your nearest mall, give your closet a clean out and take stock of what you already have for the upcoming winter months. It’s also a great idea to pack your summer clothes into storage so that you can put your cold-weather clothes front and centre. We know that Jozi’s winter can be quite warm so don’t pack layering pieces like your vests and T-shirts away, but those flops on the other hand can wait to be worn again next summer. Organisation is something else you need to be aware of when arranging your cupboard, as winter items tend to take up more space than summer ones. Get a game plan
To trend or not to trend?
12
Different weather patterns aren’t the only thing the new season is bringing. Of course, there’s also a myriad of new trends that can further complicate the act of shopping for your new wardrobe. Our advice? Incorporate trends you like through accessories. We say trends that you like because it’s 2020 and you really shouldn’t be following trends unless you’re legitimately into them. Hats, scarfs and gloves are a great way to tie in said trends without having to splurge on that rainbow coloured trench coat or see-through bag – or whatever else it is that’s the current flavour of the month. We’re not knocking all trends though: We do have to admit that we’re loving the cardigan trend for men and the white boot trend for women! Hello Joburg • April 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Once you’ve taken cognisance of what your wardrobe is missing, you should also decide what you’d like to invest in and what you’d prefer to go budget on. Pieces like coats, jumpers and boots are great items to invest in as you’ll be able to wear them year after year. Materials like leather and cashmere are also guaranteed to last a long, long time if you take care of them. Again, layering pieces are essential because Jozi’s colder months can be unpredictable and by midday you may be ready to shed a few layers. Try to buy versatile items that can be dressed up or down and will make for easy outfits, as the colder weather doesn’t afford us the luxury of being able to stand in front of the wardrobe stark naked deciding what to wear.

TAN
The Rolls Royce in luxury spray tanning
f your complexion veers closer to ‘silver minnow’ than ‘golden halo’ and you wish to sport a tanned look, the tanning connoisseurs at Goldcoast Tan have just the glam-filled thing you need! Owner Victoria De Lima has an obsessive appetite for delivering a strategically applied spray tan that gives the skin a subtle coat of colour and, of course, has the ability to hide a multitude of sins using the most luxurious products on the market. Before we get into that, it must be mentioned that Goldcoast Tan is much more than a spray tanning studio – it’s the ultimate destination boutique. So, whether it’s a professional swimwear fitting to create your desired summer holiday wardrobe or your dream tan for that special occasion that you’re after, they’ve got you covered. Goldcoast Tan stocks gorgeous swimwear from brands like Seafolly and Granadilla as well as top-of-the-range tanning products by Fake Bake, Mine Tan, Vita Liberata, Bali Body and more. You won’t find a bigger selection of self-tan, home tan, gradual tan, instant tan and wash-off tan products plus products to prep your skin and prolong your tan anywhere else in Joburg!
Your tan will last 12 to 14 days provided you followed the pre- and posttan instructions, but we recommend stocking up on some take-home products to make it last even longer – especially if you’re going on holiday or honeymoon. The Mine Tan Coconut is our favourite not only because it smells like tropical paradise, but also because it’s supercharged with antioxidants to keep your skin hydrated and revitalised. Victoria will happily recommend products based on your needs to make sure that you achieve the best tan all year round. Goldcoast Tan is open from 07h00 to 19h00 Monday to Thursday, 07h00 to 18h00 on Fridays, 09h00 to 15h00 on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

Now, back to the spray tans. You can expect to pay a pretty penny with prices ranging from R699 for ladies to R799 for men for a luxury tan, or R499 for a standard tan if you’re on a budget. In our opinion, the luxury tan is the only way to go and is well worth the price tag to take you well beyond the pale. The service is lightning-fast – airbrush pros can deliver an immediate glow in only 15 minutes, which then deepens over the next few hours. After your tan, you’ll understand exactly how Victoria’s foolproof techniques and meticulous attention to detail have won her a loyal following.

JINTARA RESTAURANT Full steam ahead!
T
here’s so much more to the southeast Asian cuisine than the cartons of pad Thai you always order at your go-to delivery restaurant. Gather a hangry crew and head to Jintara Restaurant, where you can feast on piquant bowls of khao pad from the northeastern Isan region, smoked salmon trout salad with a medley of fruits and dim sum that will make you go dumpling crazy. In Thai, Jintara means ‘to imagine, to dream’ – a fitting name for both the interior and the menu at this long-running restaurant.
22
Jintara’s dining room’s contemporary feel is matched by the enthusiastic young staff. Tapas-style sharing is the name of the game at this Bryanston favourite, and the menu attracts foodies citywide: Not only does it span the culinary regions of Thailand, but it includes twists from Japanese food, too. We recommend starting with the chicken spring rolls, the tempura prawns as well as the spicy duck and prawn gao dim sum. The appeal of this dim sum innovator doesn’t seem to have dulled Hello Joburg • April 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
since it rebranded – served in bamboo baskets, the delicate steamed buns come with fillings such as chicken, spicy beef, butternut, spinach and cream cheese, and soft prawn. The other dumpling varieties are well worth sampling too: Don’t leave without trying the seriously smooth prawn and spring onion wontons, served with a sweet, vinegary sauce. If you’re dreaming of sushi, you’ve also come to the right place. Jintara’s sushi counter takes its art seriously: Expect platters of 4x4 Prawn & Rolla rolls with tempura prawns atop tuna or salmon California rolls and tuna or salmon California rolls topped with the same fish, mayo, avocado and caviar, sprinkled with spring onion, teriyaki and seven spice. Every plate is beautifully presented with slivers of vegetables and dots of wasabi. Sushi connoisseurs are welcome to go off-menu here, but we recommend the melt-in-your-mouth delicious salmon roses and the rainbow rolls layered with salmon, tuna and avocado, topped with mayo and caviar. Even if you skip the sushi-inspired
dishes, the spicy, incredibly complex curries are still a radical departure from most pad Thaipushing joints. Much of the main course section of the menu is built around less familiar street-food options, such as gaeng ped Thai red curry featuring peppers, bamboo, fresh basil and coconut milk or the nam prik pao – egg noodles stir-fried with cashews and fresh vegetables in a traditional Thai roasted chilli paste. Beware: What Jintara calls ‘medium spicy’ is hellaciously hot. More delicate tongues can rest easy with the rich, mild gaeng keow wan Thai green curry with chicken, vegetables, fresh basil and coconut milk or the pad khing with stir-fried ginger, garlic, mushrooms and other vegetables. To drink, you can choose from a decent selection of spicefriendly wines. If you’re looking for stellar Thai food including elevated street food and regional specialties, we couldn’t recommend Jintara enough. When you tire of eggs for brunch, try a communal style of cuisine at Jintara for a dim sum brunch (the restaurant opens at 11h00 daily). Or, try it for your next girls’ dinner or date night – just make sure your credit card is charged up as prices can add up quickly. Joburg’s Thai restaurant scene is phenomenally underrated. Jintara Restaurant, previously known as Erawan in Riverside Shopping Centre, will keep you coming back for more self-inflicted pain. It may not be scientifically proven, but spicy food is addictive – especially here. From pad Thai to die for to fiery regional fare, this hip, buzzy spot serves up the most terrific Thai food in the city.

he City of Gold’s not short of hotel buffets that rely heavily on same-old standards and throwback dessert-trolley staples, but Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff’s Champagne Brunch offering – which happens every Saturday between 13h00 and 15h00 – happily sidesteps the clichés in favour of a highclass free-flow brunch that includes an infinite array of exquisite dishes, immaculate service and a killer view from Flames restaurant. At R795 per person expectations are high, but the exceptional touches here make it one of our very top special occasion brunches. And considering what some of the dishes included go for on the à la carte menu, it’s excellent value. Of course, you get the spectacular views from the terrace, but the price also includes a welcome glass of GH Mumm champagne, one hot dish from the kitchen, coffees and teas as well as an unlimited choice from a wide range of cold buffet food stations including a selection of cheeses with crackers, homemade chutneys and preserves plus sumptuous sweet treats.
HOTSPOT: Four Seasons
HOTEL THE WESTCLIFF A champagne brunch experience fit for royalty
The strongest suit here is easily the fresh fish counter, which offers super-fresh Knysna oysters alongside thinly sliced Norwegian salmon, seared tuna and zesty prawns. There’s also an impressive sushi counter that includes everything from freshly prepared maki and rainbow rolls to fashion sandwiches as well as a build-your-own poké bowl station. A gourmet salad bar and full Sunday roast area are among the other options dotted throughout the restaurant, with standouts including the superb duck-leg confit salad and excellent beef tartare. The sophisticated cook-to-order main course menu changes regularly, but you can expect the likes of grilled Cape bream with seaweed and caviar beurre blanc, lobster gnocchi and pickled shallots; oven-roasted chicken with polenta fries, truffle, Parmigiano Reggiano and broccolini; Angus beef fillet with pomme purée, broccolini and olive gremolata; BBQ pork belly with a soya honey glaze, butternut purée, pak choi and sesame seeds; and hubbard squash pumpkin with blue gum honey butter, quinoa, beluga lentils, edamame beans, pumpkin crème, ginger nut brittle and kale.
Words Candice May Images Supplied
You’ll struggle to choose just one of the enticing dishes on offer, but we recommend the oven-roasted chicken or the beef fillet for a classic five-star brunch. With the sky-high price tag, it’s a clear case of go big or go home here, so be sure to end your meal on a sweet note with some cake of the day, milk chocolate panna cotta, peppermint crisp tart, chocolate torte and macadamia fudge. It’s expensive, yes, but if you’re looking to brunch in style, it’s hard to beat Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. Trust us – it’s worth getting out of bed for! TAKE NOTE! Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff also offers a Morning Brunch, which is more laidback than the opulent Champagne Brunch and focuses on and celebrates breakfast items. This brunch happens every Saturday between 10h00 and 12h30 and is priced at R595 per person.

pon first entry into Archer Bar and Eatery, you’ll notice the elegant décor and convivial atmosphere. Touches like the brown leather booths, concrete tables and lush greenery give the space a contemporary yet timeless look. There’s plenty of seating as well, including a collection of outdoor tables that overlook the streets of Melrose Arch – not to mention the stunning bar.
ARCHER BAR AND EATERY Joburg’s hot new social collective
If you’ve visited Melrose Arch recently, you would’ve seen the brand-new Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch, which is home to another exciting addition to the city – Archer Bar and Eatery. This versatile venue is equal parts bar and coffeehouse and we can already see it becoming a go-to for everything from Friday night drinks to midweek lunch meetings.
Dessert is also a decadent affair, with a choice of milk tart samosas, chocolate brownies and salted caramel Amarula fudge. The real star of the show, however, is the moonshine ice cream, which is handmade in Melville and comes in array of interesting flavours like vodka-infused vanilla, tequila orange cinnamon, tipsy Irish coffee and salted mealie brandy. In the end, we opted for the salted mielie brandy served in a sugar cone. It was certainly one of the most interesting desserts we’ve had in a while and we can’t wait to go back and try the other flavours. As for drinks? Well, consider yourself spoilt for choice as their extensive drink selection is definitely something to write home about. Order the French 75, made with cognac, fresh lemon juice, syrup and champagne for a predinner delight or the Gin Mule as a perfect accompaniment to your meal. Other things to look forward to are the signature G&Ts and the impressive offering of local craft beers. Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the stellar wine and champagne list! Archer Bar and Eatery has been designed to be a social collective and although it just opened, it’s clear as day that it already is. Whether your personal poison is an expertly made Watermelon Spritzer or a steamy latte, this new watering hole is a must-visit! 42 The High Street, Melrose Arch m 010 495 4200 1 www.marriott.com E @archerbarandeatery Q @archerbareatery

We highly recommend ordering the Mediterranean dips like hummus, baba ghanoush and red feta dip, which all come with freshly made flatbread. They also make some of the best French fries we’ve ever had – think soft and fluffy confit fries that are either drenched in butter curry, coated in truffle and Parmesan or just served plain with a side of chipotle mayo. Something should also be said for the presentation of the food, which is just stunning as the items come on gorgeous navy-blue plates that are exactly what your Instagram feed is asking for.

lthough Joburg has almost every type of food you could think of – Italian, Greek, Indian, you name it – Southern American cuisine is one offering this city seems to lack. But Sweet Tea and Chickadee is a brand-new eatery that’s changing all that. This quaint café and bakery has a simple menu that basically only features biscuits – an American staple that you’ve probably heard of but never actually eaten. The best way to describe them is like the delicious lovechild of a scone and savoury muffin. You’ll choose between a buttermilk, cinnamon or green pepper and cheese biscuit and then have them topped with a ‘fixin’ of your choice – jam, cream, avocado, honey, sausage gravy and bacon. Otherwise, you can go for a biscuit sandwich where the toppings have already been selected. We recommend The Folly Beach – a traditional Southern American inspired sandwich made with mushroom gravy and an egg. The West of Ashley is another favourite
of ours: This delicious sandwich comprises of a buttermilk biscuit topped with pulled pork and apple jalapeño slaw, served with handmade BBQ sauce. Other must-tries include hummingbird cake, lemon bars and traditional American pies, such as key lime, pumpkin and pecan pie. There are also delish drinks like homemade hot chocolate and salted caramel lattes that are served in mugs with quirky quotes on them. The restaurant is full of sweet and personal touches like this, from the shabby chic furniture and framed gold pineapple wallpaper, to the corrugated iron walls that add to the warm, homely feeling you get when visiting. Sweet Tea and Chickadee may be novel, but is it just a novelty? No – it’s a place that will keep you coming back!

chef of the month
ELI WILLIAMS
Since starting her culinary career in Cape Town, chef Eli Williams has worked her way through various hotel restaurants and is now the executive chef at one of Sandton’s trendiest restaurants, The Course. We caught up with her to gain some insight on this one-of-akind dining spot.
Did you always know you wanted to be a chef ? In high school I knew. I used to sit and design my future catering company’s logo and I used to love it. I also went to many bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs, and all the food really inspired me.
What’s it liking working as a female team? Recipe developer Ero Asteriou and I develop the recipes together and we make an amazing team. I really believe in girl power and that when we support one another, we can really make big things happen.
What differentiates Joburg’s food scene from Cape Town’s? They’re so different. Cape Town was a really ‘food crazy experience’, while Joburg aims for a more classic, high-end standard. But the staff in both cities are all passionate. I can’t tell you which one I prefer!
What’s your personal favourite dish on the menu? I’d go with dessert – the cheesecake is mindblowing!
How would you describe the menu at The Course? Our motto is ‘taste changes everything’. We concentrate on flavour so that our food doesn’t just look pretty – the flavours are there too. The menu offers beautiful upmarket tapas and there’s a quarterly reserve menu too, which comes out every three months. Meat is another huge focus – from rib eye to lamb chops, it’s all fantastic.

Which chefs do you look up to? Chef David Higgs. He’s just so creative and he’s done amazing things with his career, which is wonderful to see from a South African chef. Chef Marco Pierre White as well – I love his food and his high standards. Where do you eat on a night off in Joburg? When I go out for dinner it’s usually with my kids, so it’s somewhere laidback like Fishmonger (I love fish!). I’m also a big fan of Gemelli. Tell us about your biggest career highlight. Opening the Discovery Healthy Food Studio in Sandton. I loved that – it was so much fun! We had to develop all the recipes and send them to the dieticians, who would then tell us to reduce the salt or sugar if necessary. It was a great challenge and experience.
What are the biggest misconceptions people have about being a chef ? That it’s glamourous. It’s hard work – you work long hours, so you need passion. It’s a tough industry, but if you love it, it’s worth it.

ood help may be hard to find, but so is good dessert – even in Jozi. Lucky for us, we came across Moody Cow, where they serve up the most divine treats – we’re talking sumptuous scoops of creamy gelato, chocolate-smothered waffles and to-die-for shakes. This little dessertery is by no means new – it opened back in 2017 – but it’s still one of the best places in town to tuck into a super-indulgent after-dinner (or instead of dinner) delight. If you’ve never savoured the creamy goodness that is Moody Cow’s gelato, you’re missing out! This frozen Italian dessert is handmade on-site and comes in a variety of unique flavours including tiramisu, chocolate, Ferrero Rocher, lemon meringue, milk tart and our personal favourite – salted caramel. Don’t even get us started on the other things that Moody Cow does with gelato, such as waffles, milkshakes, cookie sandwiches and Eskimo Pies. Their playful menu
has just about every sweet treat you could think of with quirky names to boot. The cookie sandwiches are particularly ideal for those with a major sweet tooth; especially the heavenly Mood Walk made of two homemade Whispers cookies filled with mint chocolate gelato and topped with fountain chocolate. If all of that sounds a bit too rich for your liking, Moody Cow also has a selection of refreshing fruit-flavoured sorbets and fruit crushes plus a coffee selection that features everything from regular cappuccinos to blonde hot chocolate. Whether you’re looking for a cool spot for a date, shopping break or one of those #treatyoself moments, Moody Cow is guaranteed to sweeten the deal! LERATO’S CORNER
A candid review … the ‘new’ Polpetta Over the last few months, Joburg has become a city of pasta-fiends, lusting after linguine and Instagramming anelli. More and more hip Italian restaurants have opened across the City of Gold serving up stylish, saucy and downright-delicious strands of dough, but there’s one that’s been on our radar this month – Polpetta. This casual, family-friendly restaurant serving up no-fuss, top-quality Italian comfort food recently moved to a new home at The Wedge in Morningside, so we decided to go try it out
W
e arrived at Polpetta for dinner on a Thursday night and were immediately welcomed by the hands-on manager. We were lucky enough to be seated at a table with a ‘sea view’ as the manager joked, overlooking the parking lot from the first floor of the shopping centre. The new open-air space is simple and spacious, with fairy lights draped across the ‘outside’ section to create the feeling that you’re dining al fresco. Polpetta has focused all of its efforts on the food and not too much on the décor – wooden floors, brick walls and chandeliers with wooden beads blend into the background as servers bring out one excellent dish after another. There are many standout options to start with – think thinly sliced beef carpaccio topped with fresh rocket, grilled calamari tubes with olive oil and garlic, and steamed mussels finished in a white wine, tomato and cream sauce. We recommend the halloumi and Parma ham – generous cubes of grilled halloumi served alongside paper-thin slices of the crown jewel of Italian meats, dressed with olive oil and lemon juice. For mains, you’ll choose from a selection of salads, chopped salads, focaccia breads, pizzas, pastas, baked pastas and grills. To say that the Alfredo pasta is the best thing on the menu isn’t meant to lessen the restaurant’s credibility – it’s just an insanely good Alfredo. An
old favourite with ham and mushroom pooled in a cream sauce, we recommend choosing fettuccine as your pasta of choice to really appreciate what’s happening in this dish. The pizza at Polpetta is also a must. Yes, you’ve probably had fluffy, blistered crust before, but unless you’ve had it here, it doesn’t really count. The Quattro Formaggi topped with mozzarella, gorgonzola, feta and Parmesan is a highlight, with a fermented, chewy, air, bubble-pocketed crust that denies typical pizza categorisation. Otherwise, you can stick with familiar favourites like margarita or pepperoni, or veer into fun, gourmet takes on classics such as Roma and Hawaiian. We’ll be back soon to try the smoked salmon pasta in a creamy Napoletana sauce, the gnocchi with broccoli, artichokes, and fresh cherry tomatoes tossed in olive oil and basil pesto as well as the Mediterranean pizza with baby spinach, feta and olives. The next time you’re ogling agnolotti or panting for pappardelle, we suggest you make a beeline for the ‘new’ Polpetta. It’s as much of a place for dinner as it is for a lazy Sunday brunch or a glass of wine with friends … and the kiddies will love it too!

5 alternatives so you don’t have to drink Starbucks … ever! Dear coffee, we love you. There’s so much to poke fun of when it comes to coffee connoisseurs, but we’ll hold back because it seems South Africans are finally taking their blends very seriously … and we like it a lot! If, like us, you find yourself obsessed with the culture of cafés, here’s where you can drink coffee in Jozi and actually enjoy it. Seattle Coffee - Rosebank It needs to be told, it needs to be glorified: We’re fully-fledged caffeinators and our alltime favorite cuppa in the country is hands down from Seattle. Why, you ask? Well, they’re always consistent whether you’re in Sandton, Hluhluwe or Harrismith. You’ll always find an excellent barista, almond milk and a strong, expertly crafted cup of coffee. Let the party begin Our top pick of the top tipples Joburg, like most of the drinking world, is in the midst of a ‘ginaissance’. But there are many types of gin, all based on the humble juniper berry, but each with their own different origins, style and flavour profiles. So how do you choose? We supped enough gin to consider ourselves as being knowledgeable about such things and help you navigate the ever-evolving category.
BLOOM LONDON LOVES
DRY GIN Get ready to live full bloom! Handcrafted
by England’s oldest gin distillers, BLOOM London Dry Gin has style, substance and sass and follows Bombay Sapphire’s lead with a gorgeous blue bottle that wouldn’t look out of place in a perfumery. It’s defined by floral, botanical, honeysuckle and chamomile flavour notes – think a fresh and fragrant aroma and a distinctively light and floral taste with a touch of sweetness. This is a really versatile gin that would work in a number of cocktails, but we advise splurging on a premium tonic water and garnishing it with quartered strawberries – their sweetness compliments the gin’s floral notes perfectly. ROKU GIN
Uniquely bottled in a hexagonal glass vessel, Roku Gin is yuzu-forward with a peppery spice that fills the mouth. It’s first flavoured with traditional aromatics such as juniper berries, coriander, angelica root and seeds, cardamom, cinnamon, and peels from lemon and bitter orange. Six Japanese botanicals – sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea and sansho pepper – then enhance its rich character. We find this gin a bit too delicate for most tonics, but it’s an excellent martini gin and would fare very well with lime and soda as well. If you do drink it with tonic, we recommend serving it over cubed ice in a highball glass and garnishing it with ginger sticks. R299 from all major retailers, including Pick n Pay, Checkers, Makro and select TOPS at Spar
AN DÚLAMÁN IRISH MARITIME GIN One might assume that the creators of An
Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin were listening to early ’90s hip hop while devising this recipe, because it smells and tastes like gin and juice – and we love it. Boasting five locally harvested seaweeds (sweet kombu, dulse, pepper dulse, dulaman and superfood carrageen moss) mixed with six botanicals (juniper, coriander, angelica, sweet orange, lemon and cassia), the end result is a taste that captures fresh juniper, an umami richness and the dry tang of sea breeze. And did we mention the black glossy bottles wax sealed with Celtic lettering? This is a one-of-a-kind offering ideal for mixing with lemon tonic water or bitter lemon and pairing with seafood and sushi.
BLOEDLEMOEN HANDCRAFTED GIN A gin for the ‘Chef ’s Table’ generation,
Bloedlemoen Handcrafted Gin (pronounced ‘blue’d le moon’) is made from locally sourced tarocco blood orange. A refreshing and delicious liquid layered with the warmth of selected spices, it includes no less than 10 natural botanicals: Juniper, blood orange, orange peel, grains of paradise, coriander, cassia bark, nutmeg, liquorice root, angelica root and cardamom. The cute label draws you in, but Bloedlemoen delivers on more than its packaging – this is one of the most interesting gins on the market. It can easily be sipped over ice or mixed in a simple G&T with a slice of orange (fresh or dried) or a cinnamon stick (or piece of cassia bark). R399 from all good bottle stores

COPPERHEAD GIN Mr. Copperhead was a notorious alchemist who, during his pursuit of searing for the elixir of life,
conjured up this exquisite gin. Made using the perfect balance of five ingredients – juniper, coriander seeds, angelica, cardamom and orange peel – Copperhead Gin lets sweet, citrussy notes shine. Slightly sweeter and earthier than a typical London Dry Gin, there’s also a lot of citrus in this pour. It’s exceedingly smooth with a crisp, full finish that’s all about pine. This full-bodied, strong gin leaves a lasting impression and is our go-to gin for mixing with Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water garnished with orange peel and coriander. THE ZONE @ ROSEBANK
Find the art and let the art find you
Embracing its trendy and arty atmosphere,The Zone @ Rosebank has launched a unique Walking Gallery, showcasing remarkable pieces created by renowned Capetonian graffiti artist, Falko Oneand curated by talented bureau, BrainFarm.
T
he Walking Gallery’s primary subject matter celebrates local culture, diversity, nature and beauty, and also serves as a platform to pay special tribute to iconic South Africans, such as South African musical icon, Johnny Clegg. The most recent completion for The Walking Gallery was The Crossing, which was created for The Zone in honour of Johnny Clegg’s life, artistry, and legacy. This piece is located on the underside of The Zone’s main extended bridge, which allows for a special view when walking underneath it. Falko One realised that the bridge resembles that of a guitar neck and proposed using Johnny Clegg’s hands on the guitar. The physical crossing of this bridge represents his famous song, The Crossing. Falko One is amongst the most respected and talented graffiti artists in the country and has been strongly influential in the growth of the South African graffiti culture. “This artwork is special to me. Using the bridge to represent such a powerful song, The Crossing, makes for a unique manner in which to celebrate one of our iconic musicians. It was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass over,” says Falko One when discussing The Walking Gallery’s The Crossing artwork.

THE HIDE OUT
The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for antiapartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257

SHAKERS COCKTAIL BAR
You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111

Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. Unfortunately, apart from the nachos, we wouldn’t recommend the food. 90 De Korte Street, Braamfontein m 061 443 0084

First-time BUYERS Art collecting 101
The world of art – and especially art collecting – may appear exclusive and pretentious but in reality, it’s way more accessible than you think. If you’ve always had an interest in art collecting, but haven’t the foggiest idea how to start, you’ve come to the right place!

more pointless images that don’t make sense to you then why buy them? After all, there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to resell the pieces later on, so it’s important that you like or, at the very least, can live with the artwork you buy. Developing an eye for art is a key skill when building your art collection, which is why it’s essential to find pieces that speak to you. Art, just like everything else, is subject to trends and what’s popular now won’t necessarily be in 10 years’ time. Develop your understanding Yes, it is all about your taste, but increasing your understanding of art is important as well. Brush up on your basics of who’s who in South Africa’s art industry – if the names Penny Siopis and Gerard Sekoto don’t ring a bell, you may want to start there. Ultimately attending as many exhibitions and walkabouts is the best way to learn about art. Plus, you’ll also be able to rub shoulders with artists and academics. Two of Joburg’s best-known galleries – Everard Read and Circa Gallery – are a fantastic starting point as they’re constantly hosting new shows. 6 Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank
1 www.everard-read.co.za 1 www.circagallery.org
Consider different mediums Acknowledging the difference between mediums links to developing your understanding of the artworld and is imperative before you set off on your art collecting journey. Paintings, sculptures, photography and drawings are examples of well-known mediums, while installation art, performance art and printmaking are mediums that are less understood. Prints are particularly great for first-time art buyers as they allow people to collect work from well-known artists without breaking the bank. Closed edition prints are typically signed and numbered and the fewer the number of editions, the more valuable the print will be. On the other hand, an open edition print means that the artist can make as many copies as they wish and are therefore less valuable. We recommend checking out The Atelier at 44 Stanley for great prints from the likes of Diane Victor, Claudette Schreuders and Judith Mason. 44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark 1 www.theatelier.co.za
Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied
Start small Whether you want to make a fortune or just spruce up your home with some original pieces, size and price are the first things you want to consider when purchasing an artwork. You don’t want to spend too much on your first buy and you also need to consider where you’re going to store the piece – buying that two-metre solid metal sculpture may not be your best bet! Rather go with something compact like a painting that you can hang in your living room or a drawing you can frame for your bedside table. Another great tip is to attend smaller exhibitions – student exhibitions are particularly fabulous when looking for reasonably priced art. Galleries like the UJ Art Gallery and Wits Art Museum often host exciting student exhibitions.

Entertainment picks for the ultimate lazy weekend in
READ The Perks of Being a Wallflower author, Stephen Chbosky has recently released his long-awaited second novel – Imaginary Friend. The story follows the life of Kate Reese and her son Christopher as they move to a new town to escape Kate’s abusive relationship. All is well in their new lives until Christopher goes missing for a few days and returns completely unscathed, apart from a voice in his head that only he can hear. Imaginary Friend has come as a surprise to fans of Chbosky as there was little to no warning that the author was penning a second book, but what’s even more surprising is the switch in genre from Young Adult to Horror. So, does the novel live up to expectations? Not if you’re looking for the same kind of self-reflexive coming of age story as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but certainly if you’re looking for an exciting read with great character development. Imaginary Friend is an amazing read in its own right, although we don’t recommend reading it alone at night! Available for R333 from www.exclusivbooks.co.za

Saseka Tented Camp from the comfort of their private decks. Designed and decorated by the award-winning team of Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, Saseka Tented Camp combines natural, sustainable architecture with cutting-edge design. Influenced by the romantic narrative of tented camps from yesteryear, the tents have been reimagined with a gentle nod to nostalgia, but with the emphasis very much on the 21st century design. There are eight luxury 200m² tents, each with their own private deck and pool – perfect for couples looking for a romantic safari experience, where privacy and comfort are a priority. The public space is a celebration of nature! The use of light was key in the design and the extraordinary ceiling, which filters light into the space, imitating the natural dappled light of a tree canopy, is very much a focal point and has been christened the “ceiling for all seasons”.

UMNGAZI HOTEL & SPA, EASTERN CAPE
The perfect location for an active family Once upon a time Bushmen and Hottentots settled the Wild Coast and so farmlands were established, which later laid the foundations for this modern town. Now it has so much more to offer yet remains unspoiled and untouched. Perched amongst the mountains in the Eastern Cape a short distance drive from Mthatha Airport lies Umngazi Wild Coast Hotel and Spa. This hotel gives us South Africans bragging rights and is where you’ll book a holiday you won’t regret. Brimming with pride, the hotel is situated on a magnificent stretch of the Wild Coast at the mouth of the Umngazi River, 8km down the coast from Port St John’s. It is not the easiest location to get to but worth every kilometre. The same owners have held onto this paradise for 25 years and it was originally created in the 70s for the local community. This establishment was never focused on affluence but rather on restoring and giving back to the community and it is this ethos that still remains. From the dirt road, evergreen lush bush and sky-blue ocean waters disguise the hotel. Inside the hotel is a fantasy, a secluded oasis with river and ocean views, surrounded by raw sunshiny wilderness. You will most probably be surprised at every corner you explore of this property and you’ll also never be far away from a doting waiter. You’ll experience contrasting landscapes, from especially lazy cows dazed on the beach to coastal vistas to the beloved untamed river. We stayed for five nights but we recommend extending to seven. Get up early, make yourself a cup of tea in the room and sit on your private balcony. Each room has a unique view of the majestic gardens, river or ocean and each room has a balcony and outdoor shower. The rooms are beautiful and pristine; they have a beachy feel, a simple and neutral palette designed with space and comfort in mind. Book a garden family room because these rooms are closest to the main hotel facilities and dining areas. Inter-leading rooms are available also catering to families. The truth is this entire resort-like property caters to families but it’s neither kitsch nor campy but rather tasteful and polished and also has an adult’s desires top of mind. There is a kiddies dining area, a daily activity list all included in the rates, an outdoor kiddies jungle gym as well as an indoor kids club and play area, a tennis court, an evening movie club, pool table and darts, board games, a library, walks and hikes all geared towards the little ones, even cupcake making classes, we could go on.. It’s a fairy-tale for the youngsters and a dream come true for mom and dad. Also, there are child minders on tap, available all day upon request at an extra charge as well as for evening babysitting. If junior wants a massage at the pool that can also be organised. For the grownups the food is out of this world exceptional. Cuisine catered for royalty with
a la carte 5 course dinners and wine pairings and sensational buffet selections, all included in the daily rate, plus tea is served twice daily with beautifully baked bountiful scones, cakes, homemade rusks, health balls and fresh fruit. But the anchor of the property has to be the spa. With vast and furious views of the seascape this charming seaside spa is a riot of endless beauty. There are only three treatment rooms ensuring the space is always tranquil and exclusive, it’s about relaxation oh and getting a selfie at the loo with a view. There is also a natural pool and showers with everlasting views. The treatments are subtly sensuous with zero noise in the background, not even an air-con roar disrupts this sanctuary, all you’ll hear is the simple hum of the ocean waves.

MARK YOUR milestone Make sure this one is the most memorable yet
Drink cocktails like a movie star Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, crazy cats and acrobats … get dolled up and go for fancy overpriced cocktails at The Gentlemen’s Arthouse. This boutique artisan cocktail bar used to be a bathhouse complete with water closets, but behind the absinthe-green velvet curtains lies a transformed space with green-tiled urinals, cathedral-style windows and an impressive art collection. Flag down a white-jacketed waiter and order the Gentleman’s Persuasion (R250) made with Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve and a hint of Talisker, sweetened with homemade barley honey and bumped up with chocolate bitters and sesame seed oil. Make someone else pay though, obviously. It’s your birthday after all. Miriam Makeba Street, Newtown 010 592 1911 www.gentlemensarthouse.com Instagram: @gentlemensarthouse

See a film in a weird place You shouldn’t settle for your average cinema trip on your birthday – not even to the ultraluxurious Cine Prestige with reclining leather chairs, snack trays and waiters. Instead, check out The Bioscope Independent Cinema, where you’ll find old cult classics, discover small films from other parts of the world and, most importantly, watch South African cinema past and present. You’ll experience what it was like to watch a movie back in the day on Louis Botha Avenue at the Astra or Royal Bioscopes in a beautiful art-deco building – except you’ll be sitting in repurposed car seats. But still, you don’t get that at your local Ster-Kinekor. Oh, and bonus: You can take any food and drink from adjoining lobby bar and pizza parlour, Chalkboard into the bioscope.

SOUTHERN SUN
Set directly adjacent to the airport, the Southern Sun is both an architectural marvel and a biz traveller’s dream. With direct pedestrian access and stacked with 366 comfortable and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms, the hotel is hardly Plan B material. A continental breakfast buffet of fresh bread and pastries, cheeses and cold cuts freshens every morning, and dinners are prime time for Mediterranean-themed dishes at Bernoulli’s Restaurant, from angel hair pasta tossed with diced crayfish tail to pan-fried duck breast fillet served on a sautéed warm vegetable salad followed by homemade blueberry pie topped with whipped cream. Sneak to Caroline’s Day Spa & Salon for a hydration facial, aromatherapy massage, back wrap or hot oil hair treatment and you’ll feel as good as new before that big meeting. PREMIER HOTEL
A mere 2.7km from the airport, the Premier Hotel is pretty swanky for what could easily be another mediocre highway hotel. The 275-room hotel, buffeted by sprawling gardens, looks and feels a little like a tropical oasis – but with better amenities. Take a dip in the pool or, better yet, treat yourself to an Evolving Hammam package at Evolve Day Spa - a signature ritual based on old Turkish baths - that includes a full body cleanse and exfoliation in the hammam room plus a back, neck and shoulder massage. Before you crash, take some time to mingle at the bar and then take the party to the warm and welcoming Kubatana Restaurant for a dinner of high-end African fare. 73 Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, Kempton Park m 011 393 8000 1 www.premierhotels.co.za

RACHEL SMITH
Rachel Smith is the founder of proudly South African brand, Smiths Gin. Although the brand was only launched early last year, it’s already on its way to becoming a local favourite. We sat down with this mover – or should we say boozer – and shaker to find out more about her journey and all things gin.
What distinguishes Smiths Gin from other gin brands? Smiths Gin gives the consumer the opportunity to experiment with locally produced, high-quality, award-winning gins and give back at the same time. The three variants were created based on the flavour types from the gin flavour wheel and adapted for the South African market and their tastes. Elderflower satisfies consumers looking for a light, sweet and delicate floral gin, Citrus is while for the fresh and crisp gin-lovers and the Spice variant is for the bold and rich flavour ginlovers. Plus, a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of these gins go towards helping talented individuals grow themselves through bi-annual bursaries.
All three variants of Smiths Gin won at the 2019 South African Craft Gin Awards. What was that experience like? That was one of the proudest moments of my journey with the brand and a clear indicator that I had developed a high-quality range of gins. Even though I nearly didn’t go to the awards ceremony as I didn’t have the money to book a flight and accommodation in Cape Town, I changed my mind at last minute and decided to go and it was so worth it – my Elderflower and Spice gins received Double Gold and Citrus won Gold! It was surreal to be the brand owner walking up to the stage to receive the awards for my gins. What’s your favourite drink? That’s a hard question for me as there are so many that I like, but if I had to choose one it would have to be a Bramble – 50ml of any Smiths Gin, simple syrup, blackberry syrup and lemon juice. It has a lovely balance between sweet and sour and is so simple to make. It also looks posh!
Gin and craft gin have had a recent surge in popularity. Why do you think that is? The majority of today’s consumers are extremely experimental with what they love and seek both quality and value in their purchases – and gin allows for this at all levels of income. The permutations, status, flavour types and occasions to enjoy gin are endless, whether you’re enjoying a simple G&T or a negroni!
What are your favourite bars in Joburg? Wherever has decent live music, great views and chilled vibes. These include Rockets, Mix Cocktail Bar and The Little Fox Cocktail Bar. I also often find myself at Molly Malones or Papa Pronto for Sunday sundowners.
What are some of the challenges of distilling gin in Joburg? The biggest challenge has been the effect of load shedding on distillation and ensuring that the full production is uninterrupted.
