foreword

What is the biggest

lesson that lockdown has taught you thus far?

Hello, Pretoria! It’s been a tough month. Tougher than most. A friend posted on Instagram the other day: “2020. Seriously?” That’s how I often feel at the end of the day when all that’s left of me is enough energy to jump into bed. But, after this month I have also realised a couple of things: 1. The normal we knew before COVID-19 was too busy, too fast, too full of things that did not really matter and way too serious (probably because there was no time for having fun). 2. We think we spent quality time with our families until we were really forced to spend quality quality time with our loved ones. 3. People still need neighbours, even if it’s just to put a freshly baked milktart on the wall for them to enjoy amidst the chaos that Coronavirus has caused. 4. Schools do more for our children than we realise, and teachers have more patience than any of us! Keeping toddlers busy for the whole day is no walk in the park and staying sane while doing it is a skill not many people have. 5. Working from home doesn’t necessarily mean you have more time on your hands. 6. Routine is key. 7. Although Coronavirus is really something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, it did come with a few worthy life lessons that we need to realise and remember. 8. Your home is where you need to feel safe, welcome and wanted. 9. It is possible to live with less. 10. Wine makes everything better. May the month of May come with pockets full of antibodies and hands full of health. May you meet angels in your personal quest of dodging or fighting the virus. May you be an angel for someone who needs one. It has become a cliché, but it’s still so true: We’re all in this together. Hang in there. We’ll win this thing together. Covid-19 Top 5s Our favourite positives to take out of the pandemic

It’s been a cruel few weeks with Corona going ’round. The virus has taken lives and it’s not so far from home anymore. It took from us the things we love. Hugs. Kisses. Touch. Sometimes even eye contact. It took from many of us the opportunities to share special moments with loved ones. Easter was silent. But…

ith all the challenges and tribulations that Coronavirus has brough along, we must take a moment to appreciate the innovation, creativity and humour it has sparked worldwide, but also in our own community. Here are our top 5s:

Covid-19

Quarantine Challenges: 1. #CouplesChallenge: Test your knowledge about each other with this fun (and funny) challenge. Close your eyes and answer a series of questions about your relationship like “who is the funny one,” “who’s the better cook,” “who takes longer to get ready in the morning” and more. 2. #QuarantinePillowChallenge: One of the easiest and funniest challenges on the internet must be the #QuarantinePillowChallenge. The challenge is simple: Strap a pillow around your naked body as if it’s a dress and look your best! 3. #Toiletpaperchallenge: If you were one of the panic buyers who stockpiled on toilet paper, this challenge might tickle your fancy! Started by professional soccer players, it challenges you to kick off the toilet paper as if it were a soccer ball. 4. #FedererChallenge: Roger Federer took to social media with a volley challenge for friends, fans and celebrities alike. Tennis fans across the globe are now trying to match his skill (which is nearly impossible as we all very well know)! You’ll find more posts with the hashtag #tennisathome. 5. #Museumchallenge: The internet went wild with people mimicking or recreating famous artworks with household items – some really clever, some quite impressive and others a little disturbing. You’ll find similar posts under the hashtag, #tussenkunstenquarantaine started by The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Virtual Art: 1. The Norval Foundation has committed to providing inspiration beyond the isolation by offering #60SecondArt digital stories via Youtube, Instagram and Facebook, as well as virtual 360 degree walkabout tours that give art lovers access to the museum and bitsize knowledge clips on specific artists, paintings or sculptures. 2. Following the hashtag, #MuseumFromHome on Instagram will open up a whole new world of art for you, featuring various different artists and their works from museums and art institutions around the world. 3. Google Arts and Culture is also a fun way to experience art from home. On www.artsandculture.google.com you can walk around five iconic Parisian rooftops, transform your photos into artwork and move and zoom around Tamara de Lempicka. You can also download the Google Arts and Culture App, which allows you to explore various museums virtually and play with Art Transfer, Pocket Galleries, Art Selfie and more. 4. The National Arts Festival has taken the decision to go completely virtual for the full eleven days this year. This will be the first ever virtual National Arts Festival. You can find out more on their website: www.nationalartsfestival.co.za. 5. Global art is being brought to everyone by going virtual. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam allows you to view Van Gogh’s paintings in great detail, including discovering what information has been concealed in and under the paint. One thing is for sure: There’s no lack of creativity on the internet, lockdown or no lockdown. You just have to find it!

Covid Not letting a good crisis go to waste

W

e’ve noticed how people have taken this challenge and turned it into an opportunity not to let a good crisis go to waste. Many small businesses, larger companies and brands have realised that lockdown was not the time to try to make money. It was rather a time to show their clients and followers their true values and to create brand awareness. Health and Fitness JEFF Together, powered by Vitality was one initiative that we thought really brought the message loud and clear. TOGETHER. They hosted online training sessions on Facebook at 8AM and 3PM every day, offering personal training from their homes with the trainers’ kids running around in the room, making jokes and jumps in front of the camera, bringing their dolls to exercise with them and portraying what we’ve all been experiencing – working from home with kids is a challenge, but we can do it. This made us (and probably the whole country) feel that we were in it together, which made lockdown a little more bearable. South African Wines With all sales of alcohol having been placed on hold for the largest part of lockdown, South African wineries joined each other digitally

6

with #SAWineLockdown on social media platforms, motivating South Africans to take part in the conversation and share their favourite South African wines. It was divided into different topics, allowing South Africa to share their favourite Sauvignon Blancs, Chardonnays, Chenins, Pinot Noirs, white blends, wine tasting 101 tips and dessert wines under the hashtag. It was amazing to see how this not only brought wonderful engagement for many of the South African wine farms, but also how it brought humour and fun into the conversation, allowing wine lovers from all over to connect digitally and share a mutual passion. Dining Out Restaurants and takeaway outlets were closed for most of lockdown and they too had to improvise to stay top of mind. Chefs started to share secret recipes with their fans. Chef Chantel Dartnall from Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient shared the secret to her Velvety Cauliflower Soup, how to bake the perfect ciabatta, how to make poached pears and more. Chefs around the world also took part on @mymuybuenochefs – an IGTV takeover bringing chefs around the globe together via the platform to inspire people worldwide. Each chef shared a recipe on the platform to boost morale, keep people uplifted and cooking and also to fly the flag for each chef and his or her restaurant in this trying time. McDonalds’ CEO challenged McD’s fans to try and make a Big Mac burger at home with the hashtag, #McDsAtHomeChallenge. In addition to that, they created #StayHomeRewards which you could redeem on the McDonalds App, allowing you to unlock a novel to keep you company during your lockdown downtime.

The Coronavirus, aka COVID-19 has selfishly come into our lives, taken many lives across the globe including a couple in South Africa, frightened us, brought us to our knees, taken us from our loved ones and put our economy under the dreaded term, junk status. But, it has also inspired new ways of thinking, innovation and ways to be together digitally.

d-19 Entertainment Shaaista Khan Osman, CEO at Blu Blood says that the entertainment industry has probably been hit the hardest by the Corona pandemic. “As the first industry to be shut down and with rolling lockdowns happening globally, we at Blu Blood along with all amazing international and local artists are looking to sustainable means of entertainment through technology,” says Osman. Artists globally had to make plans to postpone their concerts or to go live online. Music is one thing that always helps pull people through hard times like this pandemic and however hard it must have been for musicians, they kept making music. Andrea Bocelli hosted a live online performance on Youtube on 12 April – a chilling performance in Milan, Italy that doubled up as a concert suited for Easter, but also a concert with a message of hope in a difficult time. In this publication alone we make mention of three artists who have had to change things up a bit: Rubber Duc who released a single that was recorded in their home and Leon Gropp and Joshua na die Reën who quickly recorded a 3-song concert five hours before lockdown to inspire people and bring hope. Leon Gropp also later hosted another online show through a platform called Raindust – the first show ever on this platform. This goes to show that even amidst hardships, if you put your mind to it, you can move mountains. All you have to do is to think out of the box. Arts and Culture The National Arts Festival has taken the great leap of going completely virtual this year. There are numerous questions about how this is going to be possible, but they are clearly taking the bull by its horns and learning as they go along. They have compiled a list of the most popular and most important questions about this new way of

hosting the festival on their website (www.nationalartsfestival.co.za), answering questions about how artists will know that their content won’t be recorded, whether you would still need to buy tickets to view performances, why the festival was not rather just postponed to later in the year and more. Singer and song-writer Karen Zoid used the lockdown to help her friends sell their art via her Instagram page. On 13 April she invited her fans to join her for a big SA Art Auction on her page with incredible art from various artists. Shopping Many shops had to close their doors for most part of the lockdown, which meant no income. Although this was tough on most brands and shops, it was also a great opportunity for them to up their game online, building brand awareness and staying top of mind. Even though deliveries for online stores could only be made after lockdown, some stores still promoted items for online sales with deliveries to be made once the lockdown has been lifted. Poetry Stores, for one, used the time to promote their beautiful new winter range and also their pretty journals, motivating their followers to jot down their feelings to release tension in this trying time. Cotton On invited their followers on Instagram to join them for an Instagram dance party – coming together and dancing apart. It’s been tough. It still is. But the way in which South Africans are standing up to the test, making the best of a terrible situation, is heart-warming and makes us proud to be living in this country. COVID-19 MUSIC RELIEF

In these trying times we need to be clever with our money. Tom Brennan, founder of an investment and savings app called Franc has a few suggestions on how to survive lockdown financially:

Spotify has launched a project called COVID-19 Music Relief, supporting the global music community in the unprecedented crisis that the Coronavirus has brought about. Numerous musicians have been left with their hands in their hair as events and concerts have been cancelled worldwide and these creative professionals need all the help they can get. The Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief project has been created to amplify the efforts of organisations that focus on helping those most in need. Spotify is making a donation to these organisations and will also be matching donations made via their landing page dollar for dollar right up to a collective amount of $10 million. C’mon HP! We all need our music, especially during lockdown! 1 www.spotify.com

Know your limits. Check all your account balances and their interest rates so that when you need to use a credit card, you start by using the one with the lowest interest rate.

Don’t overspend. There’s no need to clean out the local supermarket. Have a look at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations and think about what you would need to have on hand.

Embrace the gig economy. Try see how you can make an income from your mobile phone or laptop. Platforms like M4Jam, Upwork, Fiverr, Behance, Taskrabbit, Freelancer and Gigster can enable you to make money from home.

Keeping kids busy has always been a challenge. Then lockdown happened and somehow, we’re all in a panic, because keeping them busy the whole day for at least three weeks poses as the biggest challenge and probably the most tiring part of lockdown.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

O

wners Nicolene and Peet Steyn and Melissa Archer have sure got something special for kids! After Nicolene moved to Heidelberg, she noticed the lack of stimulation classes for moms and toddlers, which led her to fill the gap with her own stimulation classes called Woelwaters. Nicolene is also a qualified Duola and a BabyGym instructor and together with other key role players (including the local baby clinic nurse) she started a Baby Centre which guided moms in prenatal to postnatal classes, as well as stimulation classes for kiddies up to three years of age. When Nicolene’s family moved back to Johannesburg, she was inundated with messages from old clients asking for advice and tips for activities and eventually this ended up in her husband suggesting that she puts boxes together with everything a mom might need, including instructions. On 1 May 2016 she launched Wacky Box, the 2nd of May she had her first order and by 30 May 2016 she had couriered 60 boxes countrywide! The boxes are thought out carefully with Nicolene using her knowledge of brain stimulation and research to ensure that kids get the best stimulation possible. She also tests the boxes’ activities on her own kids, nieces, nephews and friends’ kids and because the boxes are used by babies and toddlers, Wacky Box has a very strict hygiene protocol. Staff packing and handling the boxes wear gloves and face masks and everything gets sterilised from the get-go.

What’s in the box? Sixteen activities divided into four weeks Each box has a specific theme (Catha’s box was themed: Our Garden). Each week has a song or rhyme with moves (for speech, language, social and memory development), a fine motor activity (specific to age groups), a gross motor activity (stimulating and developing kids’ large muscles is super important, especially in this digital age and it’s a great way of being silly together), a sensory activity (bespoke tested, edible and safe messy-play mixes) and finally a box activity, which sees the little ones using the actual box for a final activity. Yes, all the box’s contents as well as the box itself get utilised in the activities, ensuring a clutter-free house after play! P.S. During lockdown, Wacky Box is sharing free daily activities on their Facebook and Instagram, as well as the blog: www.woelwater.com.You can also order your Wacky Box (once-off at R395 per box or subscribe to get monthly boxes at R360 per month) as they’ve been cleared to deliver. Deliveries in South Africa are free of charge.

Why jump? Well, the combination of fast and slow jumps, dynamic sprints and power elements in combination with balancing elements allow for some of the best cardio training. And, it’s fun! It also increases lung capacity and overall endurance. Furthermore, training on trampolines enhances the complex strengthening of muscles throughout the body, which makes it a proper full body workout that will not only ensure toning, but also weight loss.

THE ULTIMATE LOCKDOWN

SURVIVAL KIT What you need to stay healthy, sane and alive! Lockdown has quickly turned our lives upside down and barely gave us time to prepare. It’s slowly, but surely becoming the new normal, which is why we need to make sure we’ve got everything we need.

S

erial Entrepreneur, Brett Field says he’d add noise-cancelling earphones to his lockdown survival kit. It’s for concentration, to think, to meditate or even to nap. He will also add indoor plants to the kit. He says that adds ritual to your routine, which is great for lockdown. He also says he can’t go without things like Netflix, Spotify, Youtube and Instagram, which means he will always need connectivity. If you have a fibre line, a basic fibre router backup power router will do the trick and it’s very simple to install. And, then he says tools are also a necessity. Even if it’s just the basics like a couple of screwdrivers. As we all know, little maintenance issues always have the knack of surfacing at the most inconvenient of times, so be prepared. Other products we feel might aid in making your lockdown more comfortable and secure (and products that might be easier to come by) include:

HOW WE SHOP NOW COVID-19 and our new shopping habits

A

ccording to Derek Cikes, COO at payment fintech, Payflex, before lockdown became a reality people were buying all kinds of health-related, immune-boosting products like vitamins. Once lockdown became reality, people started panicking which lead to stockpiling which led to big brands like Checkers and Pick ’n Pay implementing rationing to ensure that all South Africans were able to get what they need. “The increase in grocery demand saw other online grocery apps such as Onecart seeing an unprecedented increase in users,” he says. Where they were usually able to deliver within an hour, they now had a two to three-day delivery time pre-lockdown. Cikes says that according to Ventureburn, Onecart has reported a 300% leap in order volumes since the start of the Coronavirus outbreak which goes to show that there has been an enormous shift when it comes to people shopping online. He is also convinced that the shift in shopping to the online environment will persist after lockdown.

14

According to him the sales of non-grocery items decreased with 20% but he predicts that it will soon bounce back. “As lockdown continues, Hello Pretoria • May 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

we anticipate seeing the so-called Lipstick Effect – a phenomenon noticed by Leonard Lauder, Chairman of Estee Lauder, that in times of economic crisis and uncertainty, there’s an increase in lipstick sales and other small luxury items,” he says. He also says that the shopping habits that are here to stay include people being more inclined to stock up on non-perishable goods and a paradigm shift in online buying. “We expect to see this change dramatically and rapidly, with online being viewed as the safer means of acquiring goods.” David Jenkins, founding partner at Mickey Llew (a specialist performance marketing and SEO agency) says digital is now a necessity, not a choice. Once lockdown is relaxed, people will want to buy things that make staying at home more comfortable. He also says that search is still the digital driving force with searches like “corona virus”, “Dischem near me” and “pharmacy near me” spiking since COVID-19 hit our shores. COVID-19 has definitely changed life as we knew it and whether we like it or not, many of these changes are probably here to stay. Businesses now need to find ways to adapt to this new lifestyle and tap into the opportunities it presents. We see this as an opportunity to delve deep, identify new ways of doing business and start fresh. How about you, HP?

BOOTCAMP

Notice your features & change your self-view

Is it time for you to learn to love yourself again? We say there’s nothing wrong with a little self-love and Melissa Swart might help in showing you what makes you beautiful – inside and out!

H

aving worked with numerous celebrities offering them one-on-one beauty bootcamps, she is surely legit. Melissa Swart describes herself as a multitude of things: A mom, a wife, a motivational speaker, a writer, an artist, a performer, a teacher, a foodie, a movie addict and more. But what she’s really good at is showing people who are unaware of their beauty, features of themselves that they have never noticed. Features that when they see it, change their whole view of themselves.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

Melissa has worked with the likes of Karlien van Jaarsveld, Miss SA Top 5 contestant Karishma Ramdev, Miss Universe Demi-Leigh (Moore) Tebow and more. Even though her beauty bootcamps are normally one-on-one, she also does it in small groups of five to seven and even bridal events like bridal showers or bachelorette bootcamps that focus on hair and makeup, or just hair or makeup. She works through every client’s requirements – skin type, skincare routine recommendations, colour analysis and coordination and even brow shaping. You can also choose between a day look or evening look makeup application bootcamp or hair techniques, updo’s or down styles – you decide. Melissa says that her bootcamps are much more than just the outer application of makeup or the styling of hair. It’s about teaching every client to see their own beauty. “It’s a no-pressure environment and we always have tons of fun,” she says and adds that there is even bubbly and bites to enjoy! Post-lockdown has never sounded so sweet. chef of the month

IVAN RICHARDS In a small suburb between Queenswood and Waverley called Moregloed, Chef Ivan Richards experiments and works his foodie magic – a passion inspired by his grandmother, Frieda Helena Smit, who raised him and put him through school by baking rusks, koeksisters and fudge on the side.

is love for mixing the old with the new is evident from his Instagram feed right through to his actual cooking, with his grandmother featuring in numerous photos on his feed. “[She] unknowingly taught me that food isn’t just food. It can be a tool to raise funds and feed one’s soul. It’s more than something you shove down your throat. It can heal, provide and feed,” he says of his gran. She is the inspiration behind his love for cooking and has a fudge recipe that will put you in heaven, he claims. He often uses her recipes as inspiration to make certain dishes his own. Her fudge recipe, though, is one he often uses for weddings. “It takes almost two hours for a small batch. It’s something you work your ass off for, but for that one minute while you eat a block… it feels like you are in heaven!” Chef Ivan’s own wedding was the actual inspiration behind his wedding catering company, Toast Fine Food. “We did 99% of our own wedding stuff. From design to food. Even the cake (which was a Rice Krispie treat cake).” He says that lockdown has certainly given him time to up his game and see how he will be able to generate more income. One of the ways he has been making an extra income is through consulting. “A lot of people started asking for industry advice and I started offering consultation work to restaurants and wedding venues. It’s a tough industry and sometimes people underestimate it,” he says. As a travelling chef, his working hours are often very unpredictable. He says balancing family life and being a travelling chef is often

a challenge, but that balance is the keyword. “My wife is very disciplined and keeps us all grounded. She is the answer to our balance,” he says. He has a 3-year-old and 8-month-old at home, hence the talk of balance – one of the things we’ve all probably had to practise and perfect the past few weeks. With Chef Ivan it’s always a mix of old and new and we love it!

Chef Ivan’s Favourites

New school: David Chang.” Favourite Pretoria-based restaurants “Wood & Fire, Fermier and Pizza Box. Why? Because good food, good food and good food. The owners wanted to create a space in the heart of Centurion that was affordable, not too loud and that catered for the type of crowd they had been looking for when visiting similar establishments in Centurion. The name Dusk was derived from a place the owners absolutely loved to visit while studying in Stirling, Scotland (42km NorthEast of Glasgow). “That place was our local watering hole where we had some of the best experiences and we wanted to replicate

that for our South African customers,” says Director, Philip Chauke. It’s a place where you can have a business meeting, but also where you can meet up with the girls for bottomless bubbles.

Winter Wines for beside the fireplace

We are always on the lookout for the best full-bodied wines for those nights where you just want to hide under blankets beside a crackling fire. This month, we chose Avondale and Stellenbosch Hills as our winner wines to stock up on for the winter months.

Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

Avondale Wines

Oh, how we love a good Syrah. Especially Avondale’s Samsara 2010 Decade Edition! On the nose you’ll find soft wood and white pepper, violets, vibrant red berries and orange peel – things that undoubtedly resemble a South African winter. It’s a brilliantly full and well-balanced wine with an unbelievable length. Avondale is known to be attuned to cosmic influences and rhythms. The soft suppleness of their La Luna 2013 reflects that perfectly. This wine is one of utmost elegance with its full-bodied flavour. Its purple colour is infused with classic berry flavours and a hint of tobacco – vital elements perfectly intertwined to give you the perfect fireplace wine. 1 www.avondalewine.co.za

Stellenbosch Hills

If you’re looking for something special to warm up cold evenings this winter, Stellenbosch Hills’ Muscat de Hambourg 2018 Vintage is the perfect fit. This sunset coloured, explosively fragrant muscat comes with candy floss, boiled sweets, rose petal and violet bouquet on the palate and is enjoyed best at room temperature in winter. Additionally, their 1707 Reserve Red is also a winner. This blend boasts an abundance of dark berry fruit, plums, dark chocolate and hints of black pepper and cigar box aromas. Couple it with a good steak or a variety of cheeses. Stellenbosch Hills has also just launched their Bushvine Pinotage 2017 in celebration of their 75th anniversary. 1 www.stellenbosch-hills.co.za Hello Pretoria • May 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Drinks for days Where to cuddle up for drinks postlockdown

With lockdown having been extended, most of our liquor cabinets are empty and some of us are seriously craving that favourite drink at that favourite spot… Here are our favourites.

Carbon Bistro This is one of our old-time favourites and with its new location it could be a whole new experience post lockdown! Visit Carbon Bistro at Greenlyn Village Centre for an unforgettable experience when it comes to gin (and cuisine). They stock an impressive list of local and international gins including new arrivals, citrus gins, fruity and herbal gins, floral gins, spicy gins, London dry and others. E @carbonbistro Summit Grill and Sky Bar As one of Pretoria’s top cocktail bars, Summit Grill and Sky Bar in Menlyn is certainly on the top of our list for drinks come post-lockdown celebrations. Their expertly crafted cocktails were definitely missed, and we are so excited to see what events they will be hosting when things have gone back to normal. E @SummitSkybarMenlyn

E @HogsheadHazelwood Capital Craft Beer Academy With beer being their specialty, Capital Craft has a way of helping their customers unlock the beers they serve’s various fragrances and aromas. E @capitalcraftmenlo or @capitalcraftcenturion Baracas Wine and Beer Bar This trendy, yet rich-in-heritage wine and beer bar is a cosy neighbourhood bar ideal for one of the first evenings on which you can have a drink post-lockdown. They have also recently launched a take-away menu including their famous ribs, allowing some proper social distancing for those of us who would still like to practise it postlockdown. E @baracas01 There you go, HP. Hopefully we can all enjoy a night out in town this month, celebrating the fact that we have slain the lockdown dragon!

Home sweet home Okay, it’s true. Having spent so many days at home during lockdown, we kind of got used to the comfort of drinks on the couch. No need to even put on something other than slippers for this one! It’s a no-fuss, no driving, no fancy dress kind of spot for our favourite drinks and once lockdown has been lifted there will be ample liquor stores in Pretoria that can provide that perfect drink. We’re thinking The Good Oaks at Lynnwood Bridge for one. E @thegoodoaks

CLAY CAFÉ #1 on our post-lockdown bucket list

Parents have had to come up with numerous creative ideas to keep kids busy over the past few weeks. From making flowers from egg holders to creating binoculars from toilet paper rolls. Hopefully you can create something for yourself this month.

T

he Clay Café across the road from The Big Red Barn in Irene has been on our arts and culture bucket list for too long. Situated in a tranquil farm-style building, you can visit them to find your inner Picasso through painting on various unfired ceramic objects, from mugs and jugs to plates, décor items and fun kids’ stuff. And, while channelling your creative self, you are spoiled with a light, café-style menu, homemade cakes and treats and delicious Truth coffee. They also make their own icecream in a variety of flavours. Although the Clay Café is a great excuse to escape from what we’ve known as the new normal the past few weeks, it’s also a great way to continue spending some quality family time or catch up with those friends you haven’t been able to connect with for weeks. Here you can create your own crockery that is both personal and unique; something that creates memories for years to come. Can you imagine creating something post-lockdown and having the memory of coming out of the COVID-19 lockdown stronger literally fired into the art piece? A story you can tell your children and their children for years to come. Do you need to have a creative streak? No, not at all. At Clay Café the aim is to relax and enjoy. They have staff available who can assist you with painting techniques as needed, though.

If you need an excuse to visit, here are some great ones: Teambuilding With your team having spent these couple of weeks working remotely, a teambuilding is definitely at the order of the day. Have fun with your work colleagues telling #lockdownstories and catching up while creating personalised mugs for the office or colourful masterpieces to take home. Kitchen tea With so many weddings that have been postponed, there’s nothing wrong with having a second kitchen tea! Choose a couple of dinner service pieces for the bride and paint them as a gift for her. School outings One thing is for sure: Most kids who stayed at home probably upskilled themselves in the arts and culture department. See what they can do by taking them to the Clay Café and letting them teach their teachers a thing or two about craft, design and geometric concepts! Kiddies parties How many kids had to celebrate their birthdays during lockdown? We saw many photos of small parties with brothers, sisters and teddy bears. It’s not a bad idea to make up for it by having a belated birthday party at Clay Café. They even provide party boxes and platters to suit the theme. We hope to run into you at Clay Café soon, HP! 3-LIED KONSERT DEUR LEON GROPP EN JNDR

With events either cancelled or postponed due to lockdown, there is one event that stood out for us which is still available online and that’s the 3-song concert by Leon Gropp and Joshua na die Reën that was recorded literally five-and-a-half hours before lockdown. The song is all about how we need to talk to one another and support each other in this uncertain and trying time. “All we have worked for and achieved, has got us crashing to our knees” is one of the many lyrics that rings so true. When in Joburg

T

he boutique-style hotel’s restaurant is one of those hidden gems that just about everybody seems to know about but luckily its tables are filled with mostly savvy Joburgers rather than selfsnapping tourists. Heralded as one of the top restaurants in the city, AtholPlace Restaurant draws foodies and the fashionable set who come to worship the carefully crafted three-course dinner menu. Soft, flattering lighting that bounces off the delicate wallpaper? Check. An artful, decadent menu that’s perfect for sharing bites with a friend or your other half ? Double check! The menu consists of just three starters, four mains and three desserts and changes regularly, so you can expect every experience at AtholPlace Restaurant to be exciting and unique. For starters we chose between cauliflower soup with rye crisps and baby fennel; wild mushrooms with quinoa, garlic espuma and Parma ham crisps; and tempura prawns with avocado, spring onion mayo and chilli caramel. For mains we were spoilt for choice with a beef fillet with vine tomatoes, truffle butter and new potatoes; sea bass with fennel and citrus curry, squid ink and baked fennel; duck breast with pea arancini, red cabbage and gooseberries; and risotto with beetroot and Parmesan foam. So, we ordered the beef fillet and sea bass dishes to share.

The beef fillet came out of the kitchen sizzling on the plate with the truffle butter just starting to melt into the steak. It was an absolute delight! On the other hand, the sea bass was balanced in flavours but still very aromatic. The fennel and citrus curry packed a flavoursome punch. To end our meal on a sweet note, we were tempted to order the dark chocolate torte with berry soup and berry ice cream as well as the orange cake with bitter orange ice cream and textures of orange to share but decided on the local cheese board instead. The luxurious platter that included lavash and preserves was a feast for the eye and delicious to share. AtholPlace Restaurant is open to hotel guests and outside guests for breakfast (between 07h00 and 10h00) and dinner (between 18h30 and 21h30). AFRICAM Boutique Camping

Glamp all the way through South Africa

If there is one place that we’d really have preferred to be locked down at, it is AfriCamps’ Hoedspruit camp.

I

Distance from Pretoria: 5 hours What to bring: Fishing gear, insect repellent, hats, swimsuits, cameras, binoculars, bird books, food, drinks Things to do: Fishing, birdwatching, visit the Kruger National Park, water sports at the adjacent Klaserie Dam, visit the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, visit the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, take a drive on the Panorama Route.

30

We arrived just as the sun disappeared behind the horizon. The road was beautiful, and we were disappointed that we couldn’t make pit-stops en route to explore what the Limpopo province has to offer. Maybe next time! At least we got to do lunch in Dullstroom at The Old Transvaal Inn on our way back.

Surrounded by game reserves and literally a stone’s throw away from the Kruger National Park, hearing lions roar while sitting on our tented deck after dinner was one of the highlights of the weekend. The region’s climate is so spectacular that we could sit outside until late every evening, listening to the sounds of nature. AfriCamps’ tents come with a lovely braai area next to the dam, with comfy seating and you can buy wood and firelighters from reception. The tent itself is fitted with almost everything – from tin cups (and porcelain cups), a gas stove, kettle, microwave, cutlery and crockery to bunkbeds, a shower with a gas geiser and a huge deck with a picnic table. f stargazing from a wood-fired hot tub and watching the sun rise with a cup of ‘boeretroos’ on a wooden deck is your thing, then AfriCamps certainly won’t disappoint. Located next to the Klaserie Dam (aka the Jan Wasserman Dam), AfriCamps has put up a couple of luxury tents around a considerably smaller dam where splashing fish, naughty monkeys, water birds and beautiful sunrises and sunsets are at the order of the day.

MPS’

Louwtjie, the owner of Africamps Hoedspruit explains that this is an absolute mecca for both local and international fishermen. For international tourists it’s ideal as they get to do a two-in-one visit with the Kruger being just around the corner. So, they get to fish for a few days and then head to the Kruger National Park for another couple of days before they leave. It’s a win-win! Fishing at both the dam that’s encircled by AfriCamps’ tents, other chalets and a couple of private homes, as well as in the Klaserie Dam is quite a big thing, we found out. Our next-door AfriCamps neighbours for the weekend pulled out a 13kg Carp and that was just one of the fish they caught. Apparently, the fish in these dams are huge and with a strict catchand-release policy the fish get to grow happily (well, as happily as a fish can grow). We love supporting local and AfriCamps is local for sure! They even produce all their tents and furniture in their own capacity in Atlantis in the Western Cape. This allows them to hire and train people from an area with a very high unemployment rate and give them the skills they need to be successful in what they do. AfriCamps has camps all over the country, some on working farms, others on estates. They are big on education and therefore they also encourage families to discover farm life and the serenity that comes from being in nature. It’s the perfect way in which you can teach your kids about farm animals, fresh produce and their direct connection to the world around them. Also, it’s the perfect way to spend a weekend without technology – we’ve found that a digital detox is often one of the best ways to switch off completely. Choose your glamping spot You get to choose between eleven different AfriCamps glamping experiences nationwide. This includes the one we visited just outside of Hoedspruit, and also camps at White Elephant Safaris in the Pongola Nature Reserve, Gowan Valley in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands, Doolhof in Wellington, Oakhurst in Wilderness, Mackers in Hazyview, Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay, Standford Hills in Stanford, Pat Busch in Robertson, Kam’Bati in Swellendam and Klein Karoo in Oudtshoorn. AfriCamps is all about boutique camping. It’s perfect for families and even those who are not keen campers will be impressed! A venue that transports you to the countryside

The past few weeks have brought about a lot of reflection. Whether it’s on life, business or mental health, people all over the globe found themselves using the slower pace of lockdown to reflect on how to live healthier, cleverer with their time and more sustainable.

C

Campagne Living Venue is fully powered through solar energy, their vegetable and herb gardens are all organic and their waste goes back into making compost for the next growth season. It’s a venue ideal for smaller, intimate functions and events like family celebrations, intimate weddings and wedding anniversaries. They also plan to host interesting, intimate weekday or Friday events like live Jazz evenings, wine tastings or pairings, pop-up chef tables and monthly family-style harvest lunches in the near future. Not to mention the exciting workshops they’ve got planned! From ladies’ wellness teas, fermentation workshops and gardening workshops to photography and sourdough bread workshops. The venue boasts the beautiful Hothouse, representing new life, growth and light with a large window and light, open spaces that can accommodate up to 70 guests. You can also book their cottage which offers accommodation for two and a really lovely country feel. In addition to that they offer cosy picnics (even in winter) with a focus on intimacy and unique experiences. Spoil yourselves to a picnic in the Hothouse in front of its coal stove, in the summerhouse with a fire pit or in the vegetable garden with its various Konkas that will heat you right up. Campagne means countryside in French and therefore the name Campagne Living encapsulates the vision of sustainable living, slowing down and enjoying the small, intimate moments that life has to offer. This venue is all about spending time with loved ones and we support their vision 100%.

CAMPAGNE LIVING VENUE

ampagne Living, a brand-new function venue in Pretoria East, had exactly that in mind when they launched in February 2020. Marilis and Christo Pieters, the creators, owners and hosts of Campagne Living Venue wanted to create and share a space that provides peace and beauty. A sustainable space that leaves a lighter footprint on the environment and one that allows people to appreciate what is around them. That includes family, time, homegrown food and nature – some of the things we all learned to appreciate anew during lockdown. “We always go back to this when we think about what we will use this space for in the future. That is why we don’t open Campagne Living to large amounts of guests as we cannot keep ourselves sustainable and accommodate so many people simultaneously,” says Marilis.

Bonsai CARING FOR YOUR The beginners’ guide

Did you know that the word Bonsai translates to being planted in a container? The art of cultivating small trees dates back to the 14th century in Japan. A hobby once only enjoyed by the wealthiest and highest-ranking members in the Japanese society, the art of bonsai is now enjoyed by people from all over the world!

Purchasing a bonsai tree The best tree for beginners is the Ficus . Grown indoors, this tree is tolerant to low humidity and can withstand quite a lot. There are thousands of trees, each needing their own type of care. Have a look at www. willowbonsaishop.com, where you will find anything and everything you might need to cultivate your bonsai. Positioning Read up on your specific bonsai. The two most important aspects of positioning your tree is lighting and humidity. It should be kept in lots of sunlight, but no direct heat. Humid conditions will help to keep the soil moist.

34

Hello Pretoria • May 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Watering Once again, each bonsai to its own. The rule of thumb is to water when the topsoil is dry. Because the soil is so shallow, it can dry out very quickly. As the seasons change, adjust the water accordingly. Watch out for overwatering too! Best advice: look at your bonsai daily and decide. You will soon get to learn exactly what your bonsai needs. Pruning This is where the tricky part comes in and we’ve struggled with this the most. There is maintenance pruning and then there is structural pruning - both vital to keep the compact shape of your tree. Maintenance pruning includes snipping away at the branches, leaves and buds to promote new growth. Structural pruning includes shaping the tree in a way that you want it, either with cutting or wire-bending.

Soil and fertiliser Mix in large rocks with your soil to improve drainage. Fertiliser, such as Nitrosol and Seagro is perfect and should be added to your bonsai on a monthly basis. And, there you go! If you want to know more about bonsais, there are thousands of resources out there to educate yourself. You can even join the Pretoria Bonsai Club – one of the oldest Bonsai clubs in South Africa - and attend beginner or advanced technique classes. Bonsai trees can live for up to 800 years, so if you take good care of your little tree, it can even become a family heirloom! Fun fact The oldest bonsai tree in the world is 400 years old and it survived the Hiroshima bombing in Japan in 1945!

Words Carli Manser Images Carli Manser

W

e know that the many facets of taking care of a bonsai tree may be intimidating, but once you know the ins and outs of your little tree, it might just develop into a life-long hobby.

DR. JUANRI JONCK She’s the owner of LifeLAB and works as medical doctor and health coach together with a group of phenomenal Pretoria-based, female entrepreneurs.

T

he topic on everyone’s lips: Corona. Dr. Juanri says she is very impressed with the way President Ramaphosa stood up to the plate and enforced lockdown. “This gives our medical services the chance for much needed preparations by flattening the curve.” LifeLAB’s doors have been open right through the whole Corona debacle. “Even during the time of COVID-19 people are still getting normal ear infections and kids are still falling off of structures and need sutures, so our doors are still open,” says Dr. Juanri. They have, however, taken some steps like limiting their opening times and scheduling video consultations where they can. Their intravenous Vitamin C therapy has been limited to high risk patients like those over 60 and people with immune impairments like cancer patients, HIV patients and those with primary Immune Deficiency. When it comes to curing COVID-19, Dr. Juanri says that there are numerous teams working on all kinds of methods. Some have come up with possible ways to fight the virus with existing medication which include Malaria meds like Chloroquine and specific antivirals like Favilavir, which apparently show promise in China. Others have been developing new COVID-19-specific treatments like the TZLS-501 which reduces inflammation caused by the virus and AT-100 which also reduces the respiratory (lung) inflammation, as well as generating an immune response to respiratory diseases. There are also teams developing vaccinations to protect those not yet infected. Dr. Juanri says that while these teams are hard at work on treating and preventing the virus and its spread, the best thing we can do is to flatten the curve. According to her people are realising the importance of proactively looking after their health. This is exactly where the lifeLAB team fits in as their slogan is: Living better for longer. People want to optimise their health and live the best version of themselves. “I am excited to meet more people who want to live their best lives possible,” the doc says.
