t’s hard for me to wrap my head around this letter being about autumn, but alas, those seasons do keep on changing. Autumn is my favourite time of year in Joburg. There’s a palpable sense of transformation as the cooler days arrive, and the city is overrun by vivid yellow, orange, red, purple and brown. Obviously, our people know a thing or two about change as we’ve all had to pause, reflect and stay home while looking after ourselves in self-isolation for the last month.
Visiting my parents and enjoying sundowners on their veranda overlooking Constantia Kloof.

Before I end this letter, a special mention must go to small businesses that are under huge financial pressure and stress right now. The specialist coffee shops, niche art galleries and amazing beauty salons. You make our City of Gold what it is, and we have every intention of supporting you as best we can as soon as you reopen your doors. Until then, I hope you all stay safe and healthy. I’ll buy you that glass of vino once it’s all over!

CONTRIBUTOR Carly Manser
I wish I could buy you a glass of wine and tell you that everything is going to be all right, but like you, I don’t know what the next month holds. What I do know is that Joburg has faced far worse than this, and in every instance we’ve emerged stronger. This will be no different. Jozi’s greatest asset is its people – a melting pot of cultures and influences, from writers and artists to hustlers and risk-takers … and, of course, dreamers. As long as we look to each other for reassurance, strength and humour, nothing can defeat our beloved city. So, we’ve focused this issue on how you can live more sustainably at home while self-isolating. By doing so, you’ll see that this ongoing challenge has a silver lining – not only because you’ll finally get around to tackling those projects you’ve dismissed as too timeconsuming, but also because it will keep you focused on the fact that we have a future worth investing in. Give our cover feature a read to learn how you can make every day ethical. We promise living a greener life is easier than you think.

LIVE SUSTAINABLY
while self-isolating …
STARTING TODAY! “We can’t just consume our way to a more sustainable world”
8
New Year’s isn’t the only time to make resolutions. How about we all make one big one in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic to live a more sustainable existence? We know it’s hard to feel hopeful with much of the world shut down, but Earth is in serious need of our help – and starting to live a greener lifestyle will help pass time and keep you focused on the fact that we have a future worth investing in. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
SHOP LOCALLY Tired of shopping in a crowded supermarket where everyone is literally rushed, the produce is shipped in from who knows where and natural, cruelty-free products are few and far between? Fret not and turn to Joburg’s local grocery stores instead. Shopping locally is great for you and the planet for many reasons. Fresher food is available at your local greengrocer, most items being sold have limited packaging, you know where your food comes from, the experience is way more fun and, of course, buying locally helps the local economy prosper. Some of our favourite local grocery stores to shop at are Impala Fruit & Flowers in Craighall Park, Northcliff and Little Falls; The Leopard in Milpark and Richmond; The Refillery in Morningside and Fourways; Jackson’s Real Food Market in Bryanston; The Health Food Emporium in North Riding; Dunkeld Fruit & Flowers in Dunkeld; Food in Motion in Illovo; Bryanston Organic Market in Bryanston; Urban Foods in Wynberg; Ferreira Fresh in Linbro Park; Morningside Fruiterers in Craighall Park; and and Thrupps in Illovo. Top tip: Interesting fact? It takes between 15 and 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose, so remember to bring a reusable grocery bag to the store when you shop. Also, ditch the bottled water which creates a lot of needless waste because tap water in Joburg is safe to drink as well as avoid buying things in plastic or Styrofoam – these are heavily polluting materials that aren’t sustainable! REDUCE HOUSEHOLD ENERGY USE If you’re really committed to living a sustainable lifestyle, you need to look for ways to save energy. From simple behavioural adjustments to extensive home improvements, there are lots of energy-saving ideas that you can try. Some simple actions to lower your household energy consumption include turning off lights and appliances that you’re not using; keeping a bucket under leaky taps and using it for the garden; opening windows instead of turning on the air conditioning or snuggling into a blanket instead of turning on the heater; hanging clothes out to dry rather than using the tumble dryer; using a programmable thermostat that lowers or raises the temperature when you’re not home; and installing energy-efficient appliances, solar panels and low-energy lights. When it comes to water, collected rainwater is ideal for watering your garden, while recycled greywater from showers, washing machines and laundry tubs can be diverted to your garden with a plumbed-in diverter or used in toilets and washing machines. You can also buy a water-efficient showerhead – these are super water-saving devices for daily use. As fresh water is getting harder to come by, we also recommend keeping showers to a maximum of four minutes by installing an egg timer in your shower. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
9
Top tip: Decreasing your carbon footprint can be as easy as switching to cool water, seeing as 90% of the energy your washing machine uses is for heating water. Washing your clothes in cold water instead of hot or warm water takes very little effort but can make a huge difference in energy efficiency. It also makes your clothes less likely to shrink or fade! START A SUSTAINABLE HOME GARDEN While it may seem like a relatively small step, there’s no better way to perpetuate eating local, sustainable foods than by planting your own vegetable garden. It can provide you with all kinds of healthy, organic options that you and your family can enjoy as well as provide a sense of empowerment because you’re in complete control of what you consume. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive or time-consuming! Our advice is to start small with one or two potted tomato plants and herbs like rosemary. Then, when you’re ready, move onto planting small beds in squares rather than rows using a 30x30cm grid system. Don’t worry about the quality of soil or dirt in your garden – just make sure you pick a spot for the beds that gets at least six to eight hours of sunlight a day, doesn’t puddle after rain and is free of tree roots. Peppers, beetroots and aubergines are easy vegetables to plant first and they grow fast. You might think that the colder months aren’t ideal for growing vegetables, but April until the end of May in South Africa is actually the perfect time to plant vegetables to grow in winter. Vegetables that thrive in winter include green onions, garlic, peas, spring onions, perpetual spinach, broad beans, kale, thyme, salad leaves and green pepper. You can also plant sage, parsley, chervil, oregano, hyssop, yarrow, sprouts, spinach or Swiss chard, radishes and sugar snap peas. Top tip: To keep your plants warm and add potential for extra moisture absorption, use mulch (grass cuttings, wood chips, straw or other organic material) for crop protection, layered around the vegetables and garden bulbs. Also, cover the squares with garden cloth when severe frost is expected – especially for young seedlings. COOK SEASONALLY In-season produce don’t only taste better as they’ve been naturally ripened and harvested at the right time – they also help cut the demand for out-of-season produce which contributes little to carbon emissions through less transportation, refrigeration and hot houses. Plus, if you buy ingredients that are in season, you help support more sustainable farmers! There’s plenty to look forward to in the kitchen with the bountiful seasonal fruit and vegetables of autumn that make for a more well-rounded and balanced diet. Examples of autumn fruits are apples, avocados, figs, granadillas, grapefruit, grapes, lemons, naartjies, oranges, pawpaws or papayas, pear, pineapples, plums, pomegranates,

QUICK TIPS Consider all-natural cleaning alternatives: Chemical-based cleaning products are pricey, and their manufacture, use and disposal can harm the environment. If you’re using this time to clean up and get organised, use ingredients like lemon, baking soda and white vinegar instead. Make washable cloth goods yourself: Right now, you’re probably using – and wasting – more paper towel than ever. Instead, why not put reusable materials like old cotton cloths, sheets, T-shirts and even bleached or bedraggled towels to good use?
Words Candice May Images Supplied
Phase out plastic bottles in your bathroom: When your bathroom products run out, replace them with plastic-free alternatives that work just as well without generating packaging and landfill waste. We love Zero Bar Hair & Body Bars (available from www.zerobar.co.za) and Georganics Natural Mineral-Rich Toothpaste (available from www.faithful-to-nature.co.za). quinces, sweet melon and watermelon. Autumn vegetables include artichokes, aubergines, baby marrows, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, butter beans, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chives, courgettes, cucumber, mushrooms, onion, parsley, peas, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, sweet peppers, squash and turnips. Top tip: Support your body’s natural nutritional needs for each season by trying out some tasty autumn recipes this month, such as an aubergine salad with hummus dressing, broccoli and chickpea bhajis, chargrilled asparagus and avocado salad with prawns, creamy penne pasta with mushrooms and gammon, fresh pea and mint soup with garlic bruschetta or gluten-free beetroot cake. Supergas are the perfect addition to any outfit – they never go out of style and offer the ultimate combination of fashion and comfort. You can make them super-athleisure with joggers, dress them up with a dress or even go right in-between for a business casual look. These are our favourite sneaker-friendly outfit formulas to spark your style inspiration this autumn/winter. The epitome of cool girl style Want an easy look that barely takes any effort but still looks entirely put together? Simply pull all your closet favourites – a black T-shirt dress, oversized denim jacket and your go-to sunglasses – and pair them with the popular Superga Platform sneakers (R999) for ladies. These kicks pack fashionable appeal in a chunky, rubber platform heel that instantly elongates your legs. For an outfit fit for an autumn picnic, you can also wear them with a sleeveless cotton-blend sundress. The crisp, clean city look The unisex Superga Nappa Leather sneakers (R1,699) have a unique luxe feel associated with them and are the best shoe option for a casual look in winter – especially in white. All you need is a crisp woolen coat, a striped jumper and jeans to get the look, as well as essential winter accessories like a scarf, hat, gloves and sunglasses. You can also rock this look with perfectly tailored black pants and a high-class leather jacket that fits perfectly over a plain white tee.

An easy-breezy weekend ensemble To get away with a jeans and T-shirt look, opt for a graphic tee and denims with a looser fit to make it all the more chic. The Superga COTU Classic sneakers (R699) for men and ladies are a great match for this outfit: You’ll still get all the ankle cleavage (yes, it’s a thing and it’s cute) as long as you aren’t wearing tight jeans that hit the top of the sneakers. Accessorise with a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers and minimal accessories for the ultimate casual weekend attire for warmer autumn days.
COOL AND CASUAL WAYS TO STYLE
SUPERGAS All the sneaker inspo you need is right here, boys and girls!
The ‘model off duty’ look Wearing sneakers with leggings and an oversized sweatshirt is known as the ‘blogger at the airport’ AKA super-trendy look for good reason. You’ll never get cold in this comfortable outfit in winter, whether you’re taking your dog for a stroll in the park, doing some grocery shopping (those vegetable aisles can get chilly!) or are actually in a cold airport. Pair this look with the Superga Fashion sneakers (R899) for men or the new Superga range with a subtle shiny foxing (R1,099) for ladies. Shop online at www.superga.co.za or instore. Our tips and tricks for winning at online shopping
Check out first If you’re concerned about how long your order is going to take to be delivered, particularly if it’s groceries, we suggest adding one item to your cart and then pressing check out. The website will then come up with an expected delivery date. If it’s too long to wait, you can cancel your order without having wasted all that time meticulously adding items to your cart and umming and ahing over whether you really need that many slabs of chocolate. Alternatively, if you’re happy with your delivery wait time, you can just click back and get to filling your virtual cart. Don’t shop hungry! Yes, this rule is just as applicable for online shopping as it for instore. Don’t shop while hungry – make sure that you’ve eaten before you begin your browsing otherwise, you’re likely to end up with a lot of unnecessary items in your cart. Just as you would instore, we also recommend compiling a shopping list to save time and to avoid being tempted by any delicious looking items that you don’t need. Research a brand before you buy If there’s a certain online store that you’re thinking about buying from, make sure you check out their online reviews first. Reviews are a great way to see if the brand is legit and how good their customer service is. Their social media accounts are another great place to see comments and feedback from others who may have tried them. Oh, and don’t forget to read through their FAQs and refund policies before making the purchase.

ADD TO CART
We may have swapped the leisurely stroll through the greengrocer for a computer screen and credit card, but that doesn’t mean we can’t – and shouldn’t – still enjoy shopping. That’s why we’ve put together some of the best tips and tricks that are guaranteed to make online shopping easier.
STEP 2: Establish the canvas The most vital step of this trend is to have clean, glowing skin. We love the Africology Hydrating Cleansing Lotion which removes impurities, restores the skin’s pH balance and hydrates while it cleanses. R450 from Africology spas and www.africologyspa.com
BIANCA’S
Lust list Hail the ‘no makeup’ makeup look!
If there’s one thing we’ve learnt about skincare in 2020, it’s that a clean, fresh face is mandatory. We’re kind of over the full face of heavy makeup look anyway, so here’s how to achieve the on-trend ‘no makeup’ makeup look in six simple steps.
STEP 3: Apply a DIY face mask Now is not the time to waste cash, so be frugal and make your own face mask at home. Mix together some plain yoghurt, avocado and honey (which helps remove bacteria) plus a few teaspoons of oats for exfoliating benefits. If you have cocoa powder in your pantry then throw some of that in too – it’s a serious glow-booster! Apply the mask, leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
STEP 4: Create the base Achieve a smooth, velvety skin texture with Pond’s Age Miracle Day Cream SPF 15 – a day cream and sunscreen in one. Next, apply a light and natural coverage like Benecos Natural 8-in-1 BB Cream. You want it to look light enough to actually look like your skin, but strong enough to hide redness or dark spots. ASK THE EXPERTS We asked two of our favourite makeup artists for their top tip on the ‘no makeup’ makeup craze. Gina Myers, celebrity makeup artist and influencer, says her top secret to pulling off this trend is knowing your skin and giving it all the love you can. “When your skin is looking good, anything you put on it will compliment it,” she says. Q @gi_myers Cruelty-free makeup artist Storm Pass recommends keeping your skin dewy by not using too much setting powder. “Also, a lovely highlight on the cheekbones will give you a natural, pretty glow,” she adds. PERFECT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE If you follow Tori on Instagram, you know that she advises that you always follow a dedicated skincare routine for your specific skin type. With no need to rush out the door every morning during quarantine, you can take your time and develop a skincare routine that works for you. These are Tori’s top tips to look after your skin – and keep yourself together – until you can get back to your favourite salon, spa or self-care facility. Let your skin breathe “The one perk of being in self-isolation is that it’s a great opportunity to let our skin have a break from the usual makeup we may wear to the office or on our daily errands,” Tori says. She advises allowing your skin to be makeup-free and, as an added benefit, loading on those hydrating products. “Layer essences, hydrating serums and juicy, balmy face creams and let your skin drink these up throughout the day.”
Words Candice May Images Supplied
Get into a retinol routine Tori explains that vitamin A, the ultimate anti-ageing ingredient, can sometimes result in flakiness, slight redness and tight skin. “Use this downtime to get into a good routine with your retinol product at night. Without any big events or social commitments, it’s the perfect chance!” She recommends building this up very slowly: Use your retinol once a week for the first month or two, twice a week for the third month and three times a week thereafter. “There’s no need to use it more than this unless your skin can tolerate it, in which case you should use with caution. Oh, and thank me later.” Apply a face mask – often “Nothing feels quite as indulgent as a face mask. I’ve always been a huge fan for a quick pick-me-up and reach for one virtually every single day,” Tori says. Before deciding which mask will be suitable, she explains that you should have a close look at your skin. “Is it red and dry? Pop on a soothing, hydrating mask like the Eau Thermale Avène Soothing Radiance Mask. Is it spotty and full of blackheads? Go for the GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment. Is it dull and lacklustre? Try the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal
Mask.” Check out the KBT Instagram page for more recommendations. Never skip sunscreen! We all know that a good SPF for your face is vital. In fact, Tori often says to her readers and followers that everything else is pointless if you’re skipping this step. “Being in our homes a lot more than usual and not ‘out and about’ might leave you feeling that you don’t need this step. This is very wrong as we’re still exposed to UV rays throughout the day – inside or outside; in sunny, cloudy or rainy weather. It’s super-important not to skip this step!” she stresses. Give yourself a facial massage “You know that glow you get after having a facial at your favourite salon? Well, a lot of that glow is thanks to massage, which is so beneficial in getting that blood flowing,” Tori says. She explains that blood flow equals increased collagen production, and that this gives a healthy, natural glow to the complexion. “There are loads of easy-to-do tutorials on YouTube. Otherwise, simply ensure you drain the face in a gentle motion towards your lymph nodes. This helps with puffiness and de-stressing too, which we could all do with now!” POST-LOCKDOWN BEAUTY TREATMENTS Facials and pedicures have fallen wayside – and massages may be a pipe dream until we come out of quarantine – but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start thinking about the spoils you’ll be booking yourself in for when beauty salons and spas reopen. Tori shares the skin and other beauty treatments that she’ll be getting done at her favourite local spots when self-isolation and social distancing is no longer. Micro-needling Micro-needling is one of the most popular in-salon treatments with endless results, according to Tori. “I also love recommending this to my readers as it’s suitable for nearly all skin types, conditions and ages – bar a few, so be sure to get a professional’s advice if you’re unsure,” she says. “The treatment is really mild in terms of pain level because your skin is numbed beforehand. The downtime is about three to five days and you’re left with plumper, firmer skin.”
Book it: Tori’s favourite spots for micro-needling are Aesthetics on 5th in Hyde Park and Urban Escape in Bryanston. Peels “There are loads of options when it comes to peels – from very mild ones that can be done in your lunch break with zero downtime or discomfort, to much more extreme ones that result in visible peeling and redness,” Tori explains. Either way, she says that once you find the peel that suits your needs, this is a fab go-to treatment to kickstart taking tired, dull looking skin to fresh, glowy skin. Book it: Tori’s favourite spots for peels are Aesthetics on 5th in Hyde Park, Urban Escape in Bryanston and Exclusively You Aesthetics in Rivonia. Microdermabrasion Tori describes microdermabrasion as ‘the perfect pre-party pick-me-up’ that’s generally pretty cost-effective. “Microdermabrasion ensures that the skin is deeply cleansed, rid of all those dead skin cells and feels renewed afterwards. The treatment is lovely on its own and can also be combined with a peel for an added boost – just be sure to speak to your salon of choice, as this may not be something they offer.” Book it: Tori’s favourite spot for microdermabrasion is Aesthetics on 5th in Hyde Park. Brow shape and tint “Well, need I say more?! A good brow shape and tint is one of the first things I’ll be booking myself,” Tori says. In the meantime, she’s using her time in quarantine to let her brows grow out. “It’s a good opportunity to get a fuller brow, so don’t be tempted by getting over-zealous with those tweezers at home!” Book it: Tori’s favourite spot for a brow shape and tint is The Brow Studio in Melrose Arch. STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES …
and more
The best new fragrances our editor is wearing this season Perfume shopping can be a tad overwhelming, and this year hasn’t been making it any easier on us. There’s a lot of newness to choose from, but we’re here to help make things a little easier by sharing our favourites. Whether you love a cooler version of your favourite floral, or prefer a gourmand like chocolate or vanilla, there’s something for everyone (and every budget).
Lancôme La Vie Est Belle en Rose Deep down, we’re all giddy little girls who want to smell like all sweet things. Like an indulgent French dessert, the newest member of the La Vie Est Belle family has just the right amount of sweet. Powerful, heady notes of bergamot and red fruits intermingle with lush, rich ingredients like rose and peony. How fabulous does that sound? The result is a luminous scent that’s sweet as praline pie but also perfectly lovely for a grown-up evening out. R1,990 for 100ml from Edgars, Woolworths, Foschini and Truworths
Berdoues Collection Grands Crus Guaria Morada We won’t sugarcoat it (pun intended): The latest addition to this travelinspired range of unisex scents is super-sweet. Made with orange from Brazil, amyris from Haiti and patchouli from Indonesia, this sweet floral fragrance with a colourful motif on the back of the bottle makes us feel like we’re journeying into the heart of the Costa Rican landscape. The aforementioned notes are paired nicely with ylang-ylang, orange blossom, pear and vanilla to make this floral sensory experience really lovely. R1,595 for 100ml from selected Foschini and Truworths

Gucci Bloom Ambrosia di Fiori It would be a crime to save this intoxicating jasmine fragrance for some hypothetical big night out. We wear ours just about everywhere, feeling fancy as hell and ready for adventure. Inside the lacquered burgundy glass bottle with a soft pink label is an artistic feat of noble and rare flowers. Jasmine bud extract, tuberose and Damascena rose make a sharply exciting entrance that in time simmers down for a smouldering musky finish. R1,815 for 50ml or R2,365 for 100ml from Edgars, Woolworths, Foschini and Truworths
Christian Dior Miss Dior Rose N’Roses Can anyone ever tire of Miss Dior? The right and only answer is no, and luckily, the fragrance just added to its family. Lighter than its predecessors but still just as sweet, this is the closest to a freshly cut rose scent you can get. The fragrance depicts dew-drenched centifolia roses, freshly picked in the south of France (so fancy!). Even if you aren’t so keen on roses, it’s enough to make you a fan with other notes such as white musk and zesty bergamot. R1,595 for 50ml or R2,285 from Christian Dior boutiques

Lancôme Idôle Deploy the pink grenade and release one of the best floral fragrances of our lifetimes. This perfect everyday perfume is wrapped around a classic rose heart with rose water that lightens up a creamy base of vanilla and white musk. It also has notes of juicy pear, bergamot, jasmine, cedar and patchouli. It’s a guaranteed new classic – and the super-slim refillable bottle featuring a rose gold hue is pretty chic as well. We love how it lays on our dresser like a piece of modern sculpture! R1,020 for 25ml, R1,340 for 50ml or R1,590 for 75ml from Lancôme boutiques and counters
Jo Malone London Lavender & Coriander Cologne Have you ever wanted to just roll around in those Insta-famous lavender fields in England? If you have yet to accomplish that on your bucket list, this fragrance from The Herb Garden Collection might be your next best bet. Lavender doesn’t always have to smell sweet and floral: In this aromatic spicy fragrance it’s combined with coriander and tonka bean to calm the senses and soothe the soul. Spritz on some of this cosy, relaxing scent and take a nice, deep inhale! Available from Jo Malone boutiques and Woolworths

Gucci Guilty Love Edition Pour Femme Like the wildly popular original that inspired it, this new limited-edition oriental floral-chypre fragrance is both uplifting and comforting. A tribute to the vintage character of the Narcissus flower, it’s housed in a delicate muted pink bottle with a mix of opaque and frosted glass. The recipe includes bergamot, grapefruit, raspberry and narcissus top notes, followed by violet and jasmine sambac heart notes, and balanced with patchouli and mineral amber as its base. It’s sophisticated but still hits the spot. Available exclusively from Edgars
Yves Saint Laurent Libre Just like the bottle featuring sexy golden chains and an asymmetric black lacquered cap, this modern take on a classic fougère has a striking feel. What starts out as a pretty, juicy citrus accord of mandarin slowly evolves into something a bit moodier with Moroccan orange blossom and diva lavender, which help spotlight the freshest floral notes. It ends with a clean mixture of cedar and white musk. It’s off-kilter girlishness – a yearround stable for anyone and everyone. R1,060 for 30ml, R1,570 for 50ml or R2,050 for 90ml from Edgars, Woolworths, Foschini and Truworths
Women’Secret Coconut Temptation A cocktail of tropical fruits and pineapple with a long-lasting dry down, we’d drink this stuff if we could! Blended with flowers such as jasmine and tuberose that leave a finish based on woods and juicy coconut, this fragrance will take you to an idyllic paradise. It’s sensual, sweet and delicious: Melted caramel reveals a happy addiction inside this bottle, while the bonbon-shaped bottle, we must admit, adds a little something extra to the whole experience. MOWANA Blackheads? Breakouts? Dry skin? We’ve got you!

You’ll need: ½ avocado 1 tablespoon plain yoghurt (we use the Woolworths Full Cream Ayrshire Plain Yoghurt) 1 tablespoon organic honey What to do: In a small bowl, mash the avocado. Then, add the yoghurt and honey and mix until smooth. It doesn’t matter if the mixture is a little lumpy. Before applying the mixture to your skin, make sure your face is clean. Spread on a thick layer and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes or longer. Remove the mask using warm water and a face cloth followed by your favourite hydrating mist and moisturiser.

f, like us, you’ve rewatched all seven episodes of Tiger King and are now pacing around your apartment with no end in sight, you’ve come to the right place. Tonight, we’re making a DIY face mask using the ubiquitous avocado, honey and yoghurt. Avocados are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for moisturising your skin without clogging pores. You might be surprised to know that they also contain a healthy dose of vitamin C, a natural skin brightener. On the other hand, yoghurt contains lactic acid which acts as a gentle exfoliant, while honey is a natural humectant that boosts skin’s hydration and dew factor. Yup, all you need is three ingredients for this DIY face mask – and thankfully, you definitely already have them all in your kitchen.

MUSHROOM RISOTTO & LEMON CHICKEN
Ingredients: 2 cups risotto rice 4 skinless chicken breasts 2 lemons 200g white mushrooms 200g brown/ portobello mushrooms 200g baby portobello 200g shiitake mushrooms 1 onion, thinly sliced 6 cloves garlic, 3x finely chopped, 3x crushed with the palm of your hand 5 sachets concentrate chicken stock 2 litres water 30g curly parsley 6/7 sprigs of thyme 300g butter (salted or unsalted), 200g cubed just to finish the risotto 100g Parmesan cheese
24
Method: For the stock: Add the chicken stock to the water, then add the stocks of the parsley and the feet of the mushrooms and bring to the boil. Don’t reduce – you only need it hot. If you have spring onion tops, extra thyme or some old herbs that need to be liberated, add them into the stock. Pour into a smaller pot to save space on Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
the stove. Keep it hot so it’s ready when you start the risotto. For the chicken breast: Cut each chicken breast into five strips. Season with salt, then add a little thyme and a drizzle of olive oil. Squeeze the juice of two lemons and marinate for one hour. You will see the chicken turn opaque – this is normal. To prep the mushrooms: Check that the mushrooms aren’t too dirty. If they are, give them a very quick wash by cupping your hands with some mushrooms inside and quickly running them under the water. The shiitake mushrooms need to have the stems removed, as they are woody and chewy to eat. You can cut them any way you like – I suggest keeping the baby/small mushrooms whole and the shiitake sliced. To cook the mushrooms You will need a heavy based saucepan (non-stick will be fine too). Get your olive oil very hot and add your crushed garlic and thyme to infuse with the oil. Start with your shiitake mushrooms as they need to be caramelised to really appreciate their flavour, followed your larger cut mushrooms down to your sliced mushrooms. Reduce the heat to medium and add some butter and seasoning. Keep cooking until you can smell the caramelisation on the mushrooms. Remove into a bowl and take the thyme and crushed garlic out.

ORANGE CAKE

Take out of the oven and let it cool for five minutes in the tin before turning it out. Let it cool completely before cutting it into the desired portions.
For the chocolate coffee sauce Place the cocoa, coffee, sugar and butter in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for two minutes. Cut the cake level on top and cut off the sides. The reason for this step is to ensure the sauce penetrates the cake. For the topping 1/2 cup castor sugar 1/2 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed orange juice is Cut into the desired portions (usually a member of the cube family). Submerge two or three blocks at a time in the sauce, making sure it is well best) covered. Take them out and roll them in the coconut. Repeat with the rest. Keep your ystervarkies in an airtight container. Method Preheat your oven to 180°C and grease your cake tin. Beat together the sugar and eggs. In a separate pan, melt your margarine. Ingredients: For the fritters 200g pork mince (you can use beef or chicken mince as well, or none for a vegetarian option) 125g chilli bite mix (branded as such) Half a tin whole sweetcorn Half a tin creamed sweetcorn 2 medium courgettes 1 egg Coriander leaves and spring onions, finely chopped (plus 1 teaspoon Thai pesto if you have - not essential) Oil for frying For the dipping sauce 4 tablespoons plain yoghurt Juice of half a lemon As much Sriracha sauce as you like A splash of sesame seed oil or some toasted seeds (not essential but adds a nice flavour) Chopped herbs like coriander and chives Method: Mix all the ingredients together for the dipping sauce and stir well For the fritters, fry the mince in a little oil till cooked, season with salt and pepper and set aside in a colander to drain excess oil. Keep this oil. Grate the courgette finely and combine with Chilli Bite mix, both sweetcorns, coriander, spring onions, egg and mince. If the mix appears very dry, add some water. You are looking for a stiff batter. Heat some oil and add some of the set aside oil from the mince, in a shallow pan. Oil should be hot but not smoking. Spoon the batter into the oil and fry on each side for one to two minutes, you are looking for golden-brown colour on both sides. Once fried, remove from pan and place on paper towel. Fritters can be kept in a warm in an oven while the batch is completed. Serve with your dipping sauce. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

MIELIE MEAL ROTI
Ingredients: 2 ½ cups water 1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon fine salt 2 cups creamy maize meal ¼ cup water 1 cup flour Method: In a thick base pot, add the 2 ½ cups of water, oil and salt. When the water starts boiling rapidly, add two cups of creamy maize meal. Stir well. Now add the ¼ cup of water, cover and leave to cook for five minutes. Reduce heat. The steam will cook the maize meal. Empty into a dish. Add a full cup of cake flour. At this stage, you can use your food processor or hand-held beater with a dough hook to make the dough. If you prefer using your hands to bring the dough together, break the dough into pieces and bring it together again into one ball and knead thoroughly until you get a smooth, velvety dough. Break into 15 equal-sized balls. Manipulate each ball into a disc and roll it flat until it is slightly bigger than a side plate. Toast on a griddle on medium heat, turning once. You can add butter or ghee to toast.
28
Tip: The ratio is 2 to 1-2 cups mielie meal to 1 cup cake flour. If you use 4 cups of mielie meal, then use 2 cups of cake flour. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

TWO-INGREDIENT NUTELLA PANCAKES Ingredients:
12 strawberries, hulled and sliced lengthwise 1 tablespoon maple syrup 4 large eggs, organic and cage-free if possible 2 medium ripe bananas, mashed 2 packets stevia or other sweetener (optional) ½ teaspoon baking powder (optional) ¼ cup Nutella Method:
Compiled by Candice May Images Supplied
Preheat oven to 200°C. Slice strawberries and toss in maple syrup. Transfer strawberries to a baking sheet that has been covered with foil for easy clean-up. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare and cook pancakes. Heat griddle or large skillet over medium heat. You’ll want to cook these pancakes slowly. Whisk eggs with baking powder and stevia (if using) and stir in mashed bananas. Gently stir in Nutella. You don’t want the Nutella to be completely incorporated, just swirled in a bit. Pour pancake batter onto griddle or skillet (making sure each pancake has Nutella in it) and cook pancakes for about six to seven minutes on the first side, then flip and cook for about five more minutes. Top pancakes with roasted strawberries.
CRISPY BREAKFAST PITA Ingredients:
6 pita breads Extra-virgin olive oil 6 large eggs ¾ cup mascarpone cheese Grated zest of ½ large lemon Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 3 packed cups arugula or baby spinach 225g thinly sliced prosciutto Method: Heat a grill pan over medium-high heat or preheat a gas or charcoal grill. Brush each side of the pita breads with ½ teaspoon olive oil and grill for two to three minutes on each side, until crisp. Remove from the grill and cool slightly. In a large skillet, heat one tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Crack the eggs directly into the pan and cook until the egg whites are set, two to three minutes. Combine the mascarpone cheese, lemon zest, ½ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. In a medium bowl, whisk together three tablespoons olive oil, the lemon juice, one teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper until smooth. Add the arugula and toss until coated. Spread each pita with two tablespoons of the mascarpone mixture. Divide the prosciutto on top. Divide the arugula and mound on top of the prosciutto. Carefully place a fried egg on top of each pita. Season the eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper and serve. BONDING OVER COCKTAILS = THE BEST GIFT For the best mimosa: In a champagne flute, combine ⅓ cup chilled dry sparkling wine, ⅓ cup chilled orange juice and ½ cup Grand Marnier (optional). For a refreshing rosé wine spritzer: Fill a glass with ice, then fill it halfway with Mom’s favourite rosé wine and top with Sprite. Mix gently. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Our top 5 HEARTY wines to sip this month Put down the pumpkin spice lattes and try one of these See you later, white wines and pink drinks. Thanks for the memories. Much love. It’s May, so understandably we’re in need of comfort that goes beyond sweaters and bingewatching Netflix favourites. We need wine! These are out top five recommendations that make ideal pairings for warm oven-roasted foods and chilly weather.
CONSTANTIA GLEN LOVES
THREE 2016 This classic Constantia red wine shouts
elegance. A blend of three bordeaux (pronounced ‘bore-doe’) red grape varieties, this a mediumbodied wine with aromas of expressive dark fruit flavours of blueberry, blackcurrant and plums. There’s also a complex collection of savoury dried herb and peppery notes and an underlying red raspberry perfume. The velvety tannins grip the palate in a vibrant intensity of flavour, while the wine’s inherent freshness brings about a long, well-defined finish. It’s bold with powerful dark fruit flavours yet possesses old-world charm with its delicate herbal fynbos notes and fine-grain tannins. Pair it with: The options are endless! Crostini of thinly sliced prosciutto with cream cheese and rocket, slow-cooked lamb shank with roasted vine tomatoes and sautéed carrots, Asianstyle crispy duck pancakes infused with cherry, chilli and miso or barbeque pulled pork sliders. STEENBERG NEBBIOLO 2016 Nebbiolo (pronounced ‘nebby-oh-low’) is a full-bodied red wine more
famously known by the two production regions of Barolo and Barbaresco in Piedmont, Italy. On appearance, this wine is slightly brick red with a clear yet bright hue. The bouquet displays notes of savoury strawberry compote, aniseed and truffle, along with notes of leather and red cherry. The wine has the natural tart acidity and grippy tannins of Nebbiolo, accompanied with hints of sour cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf. It shows beautiful fruit and floral characters in youth, but will develop well over the next seven to 10 years. This fascinating, almost deceptive-tasting wine is a must-try! Pair it with: Nebbiolo is traditionally paired with Italian foods – think salad with fresh burrata or pasta with Parmigiano-Reggiano, béchamel sauce or shredded beef ragu. However, also goes well with Asian cuisine with brown sauces and Asian five-spice sauces. R295 from the cellar door
ROODEBERG RESERVE 2017 This wine that was previously only available in selected international
markets can now be enjoyed by local wine lovers! The refined red blend is meticulously crafted from cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Petit Sirah plus splashes of cabernet franc, merlot and malbec. Expect bursts of red plum, blueberries, crushed herbs and tobacco leaf. Hints of dark chocolate and oak rise from the glass while the silky soft tannins complement the intricate layers. It can taste both rich and light-bodied, but goes down a treat thanks to lively acidity. When it comes to autumn-friendly wines, this is arguably one of the friendliest. Pair it with: If you want to champion the fruit flavours in this wine, don’t pair it with chocolate. Instead, try it with a mushroom pizza with tomato sauce, a charred gruyère burger, mushroom stroganoff, marinated ribeye steak or braised short ribs.

SURVIVOR PINOTAGE 2017 If you love a bold barbeque-friendly wine, this one is definitely worth
R160 from selected Pick n Pay stores
investigating. Survivor takes its name from the tale of a fearless Nguni cow that jumped off an open bakkie, landing with just a few scrapes and bruises in the middle of a Swartland vineyard. Made from 100% Swartland Pinotage (a grape crossing of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir) grapes, the wine is a hearty expression of ripe prune, plum and juicy cherries complemented by elegant notes of spice and cedar. It’s common to find purple and black fruits in Pinotage, but in this one you’ll taste amazing red fruit flavours too. You should expect tannins to be bold but have a sweet note on the finish – almost like flavoured smoke. Pair it with: Serve it with any roasted meats and vegetables topped with flavourful sauces like barbeque, teriyaki and plum sauce. It’s a match made in heaven for sweet barbeque ribs, roast chicken, boerewors, steak and gouda cheese. R185 from the cellar door
TOKARA RESERVE COLLECTION NOBLE LATE HARVEST 2017 Autumn isn’t just red wine season. It’s dessert wine season too. Made from
100% botrytised sauvignon blanc grapes, this inspiring golden nectar is adorned in a shimmering gift pack. ‘Noble Rot’ or botrytis basically does two things to wine: It intensifies the sweetness level and adds flavour and complexity. This wine is the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity: It teems with honey, dried fig, apricot and quince with hints of lemongrass and spicy notes typical of botrytised grapes. Surprisingly, it’s dry on the finish, enhanced by a slight grip of tannins imparted during fermentation on the skins and in oak barrels. Pair it with: Just because Noble Late Harvest is a dessert wine doesn’t mean you can only enjoy it with pudding. This wine is also a classic match for blue cheese where the sweetness calms the umami flavours as well as rich liver pâté or parfait. TREVOR CHIKAURA
chef of the month
AND JANE-THERESE MULRY
Meet head chef Trevor Chikaura and executive chef Jane-Therese Mulry. Together, they make up part of the team at one of Jozi’s best-loved fine dining institutions – Qunu at The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa. We sat down with them to find out more about their careers and the special restaurant they work at. HEAD CHEF TREVOR CHIKAURA How would you describe the food Qunu? It’s a modern African table – we try and incorporate the African culture into the food we make and are big on heritage ingredients like sorghum and millet. We’re also part of the slow food movement and have our own vegetable garden. What’s the most popular dish on the menu? Right now, it’s the Lobster, Corn and Champagne as well as the Oxtail, Beans and Samp. The latter is a favourite of both local and international guests. Explain your working relationship with chef Jane-Therese. Our working relationship is amazing. We’re always bouncing ideas off each other. Whenever I have new menu ideas I sit down with Jane and then I prepare the dishes and we taste. From there we decide what should go on the menu and what still needs work. Is the kitchen as hectic as TV makes it look? I would say it’s worse. A lot of people outside of work tell me that I’m the nicest person in the world, but I’m pretty sure a lot of the staff members are scared of me! Is there anyone you’d like to cook for? I wish I could cook for famous chefs like Grant Atkins, Daniel Humm and Rene Redzepi
34
Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
because I would love the constructive criticism. Have you had any funny moments in the kitchen? Oh yeah, I’ve been kicked out of the kitchen many a time! One of my old head chefs used to make people stand in a trash can when they made a mistake. It’s a harsh industry! I’ve messed up quite a lot – in fact, another old head chef once stabbed me because I overcooked a piece of fish. Today, he’s a good friend of mine. EXECUTIVE CHEF JANE-THERESE MULRY Tell us a little bit about your career journey. I’m originally from Australia. I did my apprenticeship and worked there for about six years before deciding it was time to go somewhere else. I first came to South Africa for the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and had an onward ticket to the UK as I just came to watch the rugby, but it took me two years to get out. While I was here, I decided to find a job and worked at the Carlton Hotel in Joburg and then the Belmond Mount Nelson in Cape Town. What’s your favourite ingredient to cook with? At the moment I’m really into using heritage ingredients like sorghum, which is an incredible gluten-free grain. It has so many incredible uses and I’d rather use something that’s African as it’s more sustainable. We have so many incredible grains in this country, so why not use them?
Why did you decide to do a separate vegvegan menu? With the way food trends are going, people want to know everything about their food. They want to know that their food is sustainable that it’s not going to leave too much of a footprint. Even at the Oscars this year, the whole menu was plant-based. Who’s someone memorable that you’ve cooked for? Oprah, especially because I haven’t just cooked for her in one country, but in two or three countries around the world. Nelson Mandela as well. Although I also love to cook for my family and friends! Do you enjoy cooking on your days off? Yes, I do. We have a vegetable garden at home and I love playing around with different ingredients. What’s the best thing about being a chef? People often ask me why I became a chef and I believe it’s because of my love of travel. I needed to find a job that would allow me to travel, so I fell into cooking. Like everything else in my life, I try and be the best I can be at it. CORONAVIRUS TRAVEL:
How to make the most of your 2020 plans Wanderlust is the fast pass to finding our way back into the world again

COVID-19 is the enemy that’s rattled our world physically, emotionally, economically and culturally. These are not normal times. These are not normal times for the people of China, Italy, America, South Africa or any other country hit hard by the virus.Yes, the situation is fluid and we expect that it will continue to evolve, but it’s still possible to plan for travel in these uncertain times. BOOK AHEAD RATHER THAN HOLD BACK Right now, we’re all itching to travel – but many of us are hesitant to start planning for our trips in the months ahead and into 2021. Instead of holding back, we recommend booking ahead. We may not have an informed timeline to work with, but we do have a ‘best-case scenario’. According to experts, COVID-19 might ease off in the window of September to December 2020, so that’s when we suggest you start planning your next journey for. We know it’s not set in stone, but it sure gives us something to plan toward and get excited about. And who knows – it might even be much earlier than that! If you already have travel plans booked for later this year, one thing we don’t recommend doing is postponing rather than cancelling. CONSIDER A STAYCATION With the uncertainty of the pandemic, it may be difficult to plan a big overseas trip once it’s safe to travel again. But not all hope is lost. In our opinion, it’s the perfect opportunity to explore more of South Africa, especially with the incredible travel deals and discounts on offer at the moment. Clarens, Coffee Bay, Franschhoek, Gariepdam, Hogsback, Kruger National Park, Nottingham Road, Riebeek-Kasteel, Sabie, Tulbagh, Wild Coast, and Wilderness are just a few local gems – the list goes on! It’s going to be a great time to try new hotels and restaurants and support these businesses as they’re coming back together. If you’re itching to get your passport stamped, we suggest taking a trip to Mauritius, which is always a good idea as it’s incredibly well priced and is only a four-hour flight from Joburg. TAKE EXTRA MEASURES! Travel insurance isn’t our area of expertise, but we do recommend finding an appropriate provider at this time. Some good examples are Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC), Hollard and Bryte. Make sure you read their clauses and conditions carefully to see if they suitably cover events such as a pandemic. COVID-19 has proved that disruptions can arise quickly, so this is very important! Keep in mind that a standard travel insurance policy won’t cover fearbased cancellations. It will only protect you if your travel plans are disrupted – think medical emergencies, travel delays and lost luggage. Some providers may offer a Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) product which is pretty comprehensive, but most are pulling back on this type of coverage.
TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY UNTIL YOUR TRIP Exercise for 30 minutes a day. You may not be able to get to the gym, but you can still do squats, pushups, planks and leg lifts at home. And don’t forget about cardio – think burpees, jump rope, jumping jacks, squat jumps, running the stairs and jogging in place. Eat enough fruits and vegetables. Rather than snacking on chips or chocolate, how about grapes or nuts? Think twice about what you’re eating and try to get five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Drink alcohol in moderation (if you drink alcohol). That’s no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women. There are actually some benefits to having a drink every now and again, but this doesn’t mean you should start. Use this time to relax. Get seven to nine hours of sleep per night or more if your body needs. Also, manage your stress levels by reading a book, trying out some new recipes, having a Zoom call with a friend or preparing the garden. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Support local business amid the coronavirus crisis How to help your favourite restaurant, salon or shop stay afloat As South Africa hunkers down, local businesses across the country are feeling the squeeze – although customers have disappeared, bills and salaries haven’t. While selfisolation helps curb the spread of COVID-19, it also threatens local businesses. If you’re worried that your favourite spots will be decimated by the time it’s safe to resume regular life, here are a few things you can do.
Shop locally whenever possible Pick up your household staples from your local greengrocer or corner shop if you’re not showing any symptoms of the coronavirus. Not only will you be supporting your local community, but you’re also more likely to pick up the things that larger supermarkets are running out of. Prefer not to go out? Good news: Many businesses that don’t typically offer online ordering are testing the waters. Leave great reviews online
Pick up a gift card Buying a gift card from a local business – think restaurants, coffee shops, salons and theatres – to use in the future can go toward helping with cash flow in these uncertain times. It’s also a wonderful way to show these brave business owners a gesture of customer loyalty while limiting interactions and non-essential services such as packing, shipping and delivery.
Casalinga Organic Farm has been a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life for over 30 years, home to the iconic Casalinga Restaurant and Leafy Greens Cafe. You can now order your daily essentials from our deli for delivery, including some of the Casalinga and Leafy Greens favourites such as cold-pressed juices, homemade breads, frozen meals, fresh farm produce and more. Call us on (011) 957 2612 or email enquiries@casalinga.co.za and we’ll put your order together for pickup or delivery.
If you’re unable to financially support your favourite local businesses, don’t underestimate how meaningful a positive online review on their Facebook page or Tripadvisor can be. You can even send them positive words of encouragement via direct message on Instagram or email – this will undoubtedly give business owners the strength to keep on keeping on.

MAKE LASTING MEMORIES Cost: FREE
To-do list: Make the household CEO a homemade Mother’s Day card with whatever arts and crafts you have lying around the house. Next, choose your favourite photos of the family, print them out and stick them in the card. Or, if you have a spare frame, frame them so Mom can keep the pictures next to her bedside table and cherish them forever.
We weren’t sure whether or not the lockdown would be extended, but we thought we’d prolong the three-weeks-at-home philosophy and use what we have in our own homes this Mother’s Day. These gift ideas strive for zero waste and are mindful about overconsumption and not having to waste money or misuse plastic.
LET MOM ESCAPE TO THE MOVIES Cost: Rent a movie on Apple TV for R40 or Box Office for R27 (if it’s your first movie, its free!) and buy her a box of chocolates for R60
To-do list: Build Mom a fortress on the lounge floor and make it cosy by lighting a few scented candles. Then, rent her all-time favourite movie, pop some kernels of the stove and gift her a delish box of chocolates … along with two hours of me-time and scheduled kisses. Or, if she prefers, watch the movie with her!

To-do list: Mom’s lusting to travel as she’s been outnumbered for weeks, so cook her a three-course Italian feast: Outlay a bruschetta bar for starters, cook her favourite pasta dish for mains (with a glass of her favourite vino) and make a panna cotta for dessert. For décor, use old tomato cans and fill them with flowers from the garden. You can also use old wine bottles and place candles inside for ambience. And don’t forget to blast Andrea Bocelli in the background. Bon appétit!

OUR TOP LEISURE ACTIVITIES A GHOST TOUR
BRYANSTON & ORGANIC NATURAL LOVES MARKET
The convenient thing about ghosts is that they tend to hang around old cities everywhere, including Jozi. The Mystery Ghost Bus tour starts near the Joburg Gen in Parktown at 7 pm, where you board a luxury bus. Based on the London Ghost Bus, the five-hour-long tour entertains with ghost, murder and mystery stories in the city. The tour offers something for everyone: pub stops to get you into the spirit (excuse the pun) with eerie storytelling at one of the pubs, meals, entertainment, the science of paranormal, live and dramatically recorded ghost stories, historical buildings and several off-the-bus-stops. It ends with a chilling climax in a graveyard – at midnight, of course! 1 www.mysteryghostbus.co.za

A POETRY READING
MOUNTAIN BIKING
Channel your inner Carrie and Mr Big by visiting Sandton Library and checking out the love letters and love poems of great writers and famous figures. The iconic library is situated on Nelson Mandela Square and offers a place to escape in peaceful, book-filled pleasure with over 92 000 books on offer. While you’re there, open a bottle of wine (or, y’know, flask it up) and take turns reading each other your favourites. Nelson Mandela Square, corner of West Street & Rivonia Road, Sandton m 011 282 5911
The Braamfontein Spruit is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in the country. It’s a greenbelt in the middle of a city and is 60km long, but don’t worry – it’s an easy to moderate level trail. The trail starts in Melville Koppies AKA jacaranda central and runs all the way through to Paulshof. It also joins up with paths from various other points along the route, namely Albert’s Farm, Emmarentia, Delta Park, The Sandton Field and Study Centre in Parkmore, Sandton Field, Riverside and Bryanston Drive. For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you ride in groups of at least four.
YOGA AND BREAKFAST
An invigorating morning yoga session followed by an alfresco breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel - The Westcliff isn’t just a fabulous way to #treatyoself, but also to admire the jacarandas. Steven from Yoga Works gives the yoga class, which is followed by a healthy breakfast buffet – think fruits, juices, smoothies, tea, coffee and snacks – that you can enjoy on the lawns. Keep an eye on the Yoga Works Facebook page for other upcoming events. 67 Jan Smuts Avenue, Westcliff m 072 835 2525 Park at Marks Park Sports Club across Judith Road, Emmarentia and access from North Gate
DANCING
Not at the club – we mean real dancing. Take a Cuban salsa class at Estilo Cubano, where they believe that dance isn’t just about moving your body to music, but about having an enriching and fulfilling experience. Group and private classes are available and whichever you choose, the environment is guaranteed to be nurturing and positive at all times. Otherwise, go somewhere with live music that makes you want to groove. The newly enlarged Katzy’s in fashionable Rosebank is a top choice – think resident bands, The Grillhouse’s menu, a stellar selection of wine, cocktails and cigars plus more than 100 different whiskeys, fine cognacs and bourbons. HOME BAR GAME Our top tips to keep tipsy post apocalypse
The home bar has taken centre stage over the last few weeks since Joburg’s best bars have been off limits. So, you have a bar cart or nice bar top space in your home – now what? Seeing as you can’t go ham at the liquor store and probably only have half-empty bottles of liquor that guests brought to a dinner party last year and a sad lemon, we’re here to help you with ‘quarantending’. Tools There are some basic tools you’ll need for mixing your own cocktails. The most essential ones are a cutting board, sturdy knife (with a serrated blade for cutting citrus), good sized shaker (ideally one that allows you to mix more than one cocktail at a time), jigger (the double-sided shot glass type apparatus used to measure alcohol), muddler, basic key or bottle opener, basic corkscrew or wine key, easy-to-clean glass bottles or jars for containing simple syrups and fresh juices as well as some white towels that can be bleached. Other not-so-important tools that you can purchase later on or along the way include a blender, red wine bottle aerator, electric corkscrew, wine bottle stoppers and citrus press to easily make fresh juices.
44
Glassware The price of glassware can add up quickly, so we don’t recommend buying ones you personally won’t use. Some basic glasses we suggest you get are pint glasses, lowball glasses, champagne flutes and red wine glasses – because you can pour white wine into red wine glasses, but not vice versa. Down the line, you can purchase coup glasses, highball glasses, martini glasses, a punch bowl and copper mugs. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
Here’s a brief rundown of which glass you should use for which drink: • Pint glass: Beer and double mixed drinks • Lowball glass: Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Negroni and White Russian • Champagne flute: Bellini, champagne and prosecco • Coupe glass: Champagne craft cocktails that don’t require ice • Highball glass: Gin and tonic, mojito, Bloody Mary and Dark ‘n’ Stormy • Martini glass: Martini, Cosmopolitan, Brandy Alexander and Kamikaze • Punch bowl: Punch and Pimm’s • Copper mug: Moscow Mule (which can be made with pretty much anything, not just vodka) Must-have mixers Mixers that you should always keep on hand are club soda, tonic water, cranberry juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice and ginger beer. Our top tip is to opt for canned juices and mixers as they won’t expire quickly. You should also always have a shaker of orange Angostura bitters handy – even though bitters isn’t technically a mixer, it goes into a number of basic cocktails. To make simple syrups, you’ll need white or Demerara sugar (the brown sugar used in Old Fashioned cocktails). Simply combine one part sugar with two parts hot water and shake until the sugar has fully dissolves. It’s as easy as that! But keep in mind that simple syrups have a shelf life and only keep for about a week in the fridge.
Words Candice May Images Supplied
Basic bottles At the end of the day, this is your bar above anything else – so don’t make the mistake of thinking you need every type of liquor under the sun in your home bar. There are, however, some basic bottles that we do suggest you buy: Gin (for a gin and tonic or Tom Collins), light rum (for a mojito), dark rum (for a Dark ‘n’ Stormy), silver and gold tequila (for a margarita), bourbon (for an Old Fashioned or Mint Julep), rye whisky (for a Manhattan), sweet and dry vermouth (for a martini), vodka (for a Moscow Mule) and Cointreau (for a White Lady).
Masterful mixology tips Keep your cocktails cold: Who knew the wow factor of serving homemade cocktails on the rocks could be so simple! To enhance any cocktail, simply add luxe ice. Big ice cubes work best for spirit-forward drinks, while you’ll need crushed, cracked or pebble ice for tiki drinks. For highballs, turn to ice shards, cracked ice or Collins spears. Standard ice cubes work for pretty much everything else. Know how much booze to use: Balance is key to any great cocktail, so while it’s fun to play around you must stay proportional in terms of how much booze you use. For spirit-based cocktails, the standard bar pour is 60ml of spirits, such as 60ml of tequila in a margarita. For spirit-forward drinks like a martini or Old Fashioned, aim for 75ml to 90ml of spirits. Remember: Less is more, and you can always add to it. • Make citrus your best friend: Citrus fruits including lemons, limes and oranges are as basic to cocktails as the liquor itself. In our opinion, every amazing cocktail is made with fresh fruit juice, so avoid using premade fruit juices and freshly squeeze your own if possible. Yes, it’s a pain – but we promise it’s worth it! Other fruits, such as berries, pineapple and peaches can be frozen for your convenience.
Garnishes To make a cocktail go from oh to damn the next time an unexpected guest arrives, there are some garnishes you need to keep on hand for your home bar. These are olives (AKA one of the most iconic garnishes ever), fruit peels (lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits), herbs (rosemary, basil and mint), spices (cinnamon, clove, ground ginger and coriander) and fruit soaked in booze (cherries soaked in brandy or whisky). If you dare, you can also try crispy, salty bacon as a garnish in a cocktail like a Bloody Mary – it can actually make just about any cocktail better! Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

COCKTAIL
OF THE MONTH Just because we can’t head to our favourite Joburg bars for a drink doesn’t mean we have to give up on a topnotch cocktail hour. We’re living in unprecedented times, so we might as well follow the rules, stay safe and enjoy a tasty Gin Quarantini. This cocktail will make your solo cocktail session special!
THE GIN QUARANTINI Glass: Napoli filled with cubed ice and wrapped with a banana leaf Ingredients: 5 par ts Bombay Sapphire Gin 1 par t dry vermouth 2 dashes orange bitters
Top tip If you’d like to add emergency vitamin C to your Gin Quarantini, there are a few ways you can do it. Either rim your glass with vitamin C, add it directly to your shaker or take it straight before a big drink of your Quarantini. Bottoms up!

SUMMER NIGHTLIFE HOTSPOTS THE TINY TIKI BAR
Whether you’re looking to grab afterwork drinks with coworkers or a spot for an early-game Tinder date, The Tiny Tiki Bar knows how to make the warm weather remain a breeze. Adjoining sister venue The Anti-Social Social Club, here you can look forward to a colourful, laidback atmosphere and kitsch cocktails, such as The Zombie made with a famous blend of four different rums and the Bahama Mama; an exotic blend of coconut, Kahlua and Sailor Jerry Rum. The next morning, go back to cure your hangover with a pancake stack with housemade miso and maple bacon. 10 7th Street, Melville m 071 774 5242
THE HIDE OUT
The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for antiapartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257
THE IMMIGRANT BAR
Brought to you by the same guys behind 86 Public and Republic of 94 and closely linked to the Once in Joburg ‘flashpackers’ hostel, you can bet that The Immigrant Bar is where the party’s at. Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. Unfortunately, apart from the nachos, we wouldn’t recommend the food. 90 De Korte Street, Braamfontein m 061 443 0084
SHAKERS COCKTAIL BAR
You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111 Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

ART IN THE digital age
BKhz Gallery
Virtual exhibitions you need to check out
Goodman Gallery How to Disappear at Goodman Gallery is an amazing exhibition that shines a spotlight on surveillance in our society, which is slightly ironic considering that the entire show can be viewed online. It makes use of analogue and digital imaging technologies, found footage and photographs and more traditional media to highlight practices of surveillance in the form of racial profiling in public spaces and the silent accumulation of people’s personal information and data. The exhibition plays with ideas of voyeurism and has a slightly eerie feel intensified by the seamless virtual tour that allows you to explore the empty gallery. How to Disappear features works from Ewa Nowak, Broomberg and Chanarin, Mary Wafer, David Goldblatt, Ja’Tovia Gary, Hyun-Sook Song, Mounir Fatmi, Jeremy Wafer, Kahlil Joseph and Nolan Oswald Dennis. 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood m 011 788 1113 1 www.goodman-gallery.com E @goodmangallery D @goodman_gallery Q @goodman_gallery

BKhz Gallery BKhz Gallery is an alternative exhibition space owned by artist Banele Khoza, who uses it as both a studio for himself and a gallery for other artists. The gallery is offering 3D virtual tours for a number of past exhibitions this month, so you’ll have plenty to choose from! We recommend checking out Blue is the Warmest Colour (JHB) – an exhibition based on a group show that takes its title form the 2013 French film and graphic novel of the same title. It presents several stunning artworks inspired by the colour blue, which stands as a symbol of the intense emotion, curiosity, sadness and passion that the protagonist is going through during a period focused on self-discovery. As the intensity wanes, so too does the exhibition’s blue. Standard Bank Gallery If you didn’t get catch Lumières d’Afriques at the Standard Bank Gallery, this is your chance! The title of this show translates to ‘The Light of Africa’ and features 54 unique artworks, each created by talented artists from across the continent. The project was first started in 2015 and focuses on the idea that the 21st century belongs to Africa. We have to say, we’re really impressed by how user-friendly and easy to navigate the virtual tour is – not to mention the fact that you can click on each artwork and it will come up with a short video of the artist explaining the inspiration behind the image. Also, if you have a VR headset, you can do the tour in virtual reality! Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied
From the hidden truth about the food industry to why our coral reefs are dying, we’ve got you covered for educational and enjoyable entertainment. So, ditch the mind-numbing sitcom and get ready to stream some of the best documentaries out there.
CHASING CORAL This 2017 doccie directed by Jeff Orlowski, provides a stark look into the state of the world’s oceans and the disappearance of its coral reefs. With over three years of filming, the end result is a stunning and in-depth expose of the coral reefs from more than 30 countries across the world. The footage reveals both the beautiful marine life that lives below the surface of our oceans as well as the devastation caused by pollution. It’s truly an eye-opening watch and is great for those who are passionate about conservation.
COWSPIRACY: THE SUSTAINABILITY SECRET As the name suggests, this 2014 documentary takes a look at the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. The film also looks at various environmental organisations and how they’ve neglected to address animal agriculture as one of the biggest contributors to global warming and climate change. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a hard-hitting watch that will more than likely convert you into one of those ‘smug vegans’. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
DARK TOURIST This series follows journalist, David Farrier as he makes his way around the world, visiting the most popular attractions for Dark Tourism – a phenomenon where people vacation to places that have pasts associated with death and tragedy. The shows sees David experience exorcisms in Mexico, visit nuclear disaster sites in Japan and even explore Alexandra township right here in Jozi. It’s the perfect watch for those who enjoy travel shows but are interested in seeing something other than idyllic beaches and sprawling cities. Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Visit Swellendam, Western Cape There’s nothing you won’t like about this adorable little town that makes up part of the Overberg region. It’s the third oldest town in South Africa and has a colourful history steeped in trade. We recommend visiting Marloth Nature Reserve for a hike, going river rafting on the Breede River, popping into Sulina’s Faerie Sanctuary or just booking a B&B in the lush green valley and marveling at the mountain views. There are also over 126 different bird species, so it’s a birdwatcher’s delight. Q @swellendam_tourism

We love that this extraordinary natural beauty is so undiscovered and is an ideal escape from the crowds. There’s also incredible Cape Dutch architecture plus many hiking and cycling trails. We say skip the activities and drink vino: Visit Bartinney Estate, which offers a range of exciting wine-tasting options. Once it’s time to wine down, book a room at De Zeven Guest Lodge.

If you’re hankering for a wildspirited venture, we highly recommend visiting this small little farm town. The town started as a post office to serve the farms and now has plenty of bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, guest farms, selfcatering accommodation and camping sites. ocated in the quiet area of Strathavon, just a stone’s throw from Sandton City Shopping Centre and Nelson Mandela Square, THE IVY Villa Hotel & Spa has all the advantages of being located in Sandton (without its inconveniences). As you pull up to the entrance of this inner-city sanctuary, you’re greeted by the two boisterous resident Great Danes, Gigi and Duke. This hotel knows that the thought of travelling without Benji can make many put the kibosh on an entire trip, so they’ve gone all out to make the space pet-friendly. They even have welcome packs for your furry friends – but what else can you expect from a hotel that’s obsessed with pets? After checking in, you’re taken through to Poison Ivy cognac, champagne and cigar lounge to enjoy a welcome drink. The upmarket lounge is an experience fit for aficionados to relax in style and makes a seriously good citrus and rosemary G&T garnished with rose petals.

and luxurious, the rooms play upon dark, moody tones. The modern furniture come together in perfect harmony with ravishing fabrics. You’ll feel far from the hustle and bustle of the city, in absolute calm. Of course, all the amenities you’d expect from a five-star hotel are included – think a 65-inch smart TV, full bouquet of DStv, bathroom with double vanities, full access to the 24-hour gym and heated lap pool as well as the option of inroom dining with full butler service. The hotel is also home to Reuben’s Restaurant & Bar, where we recommend you book for dinner. Looking out onto lush green gardens, this restaurant by South African celebrity chef Reuben Riffel offers an extensive bistro-style menu and a wide selection of wines to enhance your food. We recommend starting with the prawn tempura with avocado, fragrant herb salad, lime aioli, tomato nam jim and a spicy lemon dressing followed by the crisp pork belly with black pepper caramel, pommes puree, kimchi fried cabbage and beetroot for mains. For dessert, you simply must try the dark chocolate terrine with orange caramel and hazelnut ice cream. No visit here would be complete with a proper pampering at Camelot Spa. Enveloped in stone textures blended with splashes of therapeutic tones of gold, navy blue and grey, this is a spa that can cater to your every demand. The facilities include a Rasul, outdoor pool, manicure and pedicure lounge as well as four treatment rooms, of which three are double and perfect for couples. For guaranteed rejuvenation, we advise booking a 60-minute aromatherapy massage for you and that someone special. This massage promotes healing, well-being and relaxation using pure essential oils and light massage strokes. To encourage your love to reach full bloom, it’s important to pick a hotel with the right kind of vibe. WORKING IN YOUR PYJAMAS How to make your virtual meetings more professional
With employees now working from home, meetings are being conducted online via platforms like Skype, Zoom, Teams and Slack. While virtual meetings require preparation and a new set of etiquette rules, that doesn’t mean your dream of reporting for duty in your pyjamas every day is doomed. The trick is to not let your colleagues see the reality of your home office – here’s how.
Words Candice May Images Supplied
USE A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP – NOT A PHONE First things first: Even though it’s more convenient to use the mobile app on your smartphone to have a virtual meeting, it’s not a good idea. Not only does this look unprofessional, but the image will also be unstable and you won’t be able to take notes. Use your laptop or desktop to make the call instead and save yourself the trouble of holding your phone or trying to balance it on your desk. CHOOSE A PROFESSIONAL SETTING The safest approach to ensuring a setting that’s as professional and clean as possible is to have a neutral-coloured wall – think shades of white or grey – in the background. Otherwise, bookcases, work desks and professional-looking plants are quick at-home solutions. Anything distracting in the background will distract your audience from what you’re saying. If your home isn’t an ideal space for video calls, you can place a chair against a wall and set up a table in front of you for your laptop.
WORK FROM A CARPETED ROOM If the room you’re having your virtual meeting from is empty and uncarpeted, it can result in hollow, echoey audio to your colleagues. In this case, you can simply put a rug and some pillows on the floor to help absorb bounce. The next thing to consider is the room size if the people calling in are still struggling to hear you. For a small to medium meeting (between 10 and 15 people), the room size ideally shouldn’t be larger than 3x4.5m, but it could be larger with necessary acoustics.
USE APPROPRIATE LIGHTING We’ve all seen how image quality suffers when the room is dimly lit – not to mention how unprofessional and dated it looks. It might be tempting to fix this by having an LED desk lamp on your desk or sitting under a bright overhead light, but indirect white light is much more flattering than harsh direct light that makes shadows. Place yourself near a window which will filter natural light onto your face. Just make sure you face the window rather than put your back to it. CHANGE INTO YOUR ‘WORK’ PYJAMAS For audio-only calls, it’s totally fine to leave your ‘leisure’ pyjamas and fuzzy slippers on. However, for video calls, you’ll have to change to your ‘work pyjamas’. In other words, switch from your favourite flannel PJs to your functional black business ones – or a pair that you can throw a shirt over to pass as ‘dressed’ in a video call. If you feel like your comfy yoga pants affect how you speak and interact even though they aren’t visible on screen, then dressing professionally is a must. HOTELS AT OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT INTERCONTINENTAL
At the country’s only luxury airport hotel, you can expect nothing less than the crème de la crème. A short walk from the arrival’s hall, the InterContinental touts 138 impeccably appointed rooms, including two lavish suites, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the tarmac – but you’ll never hear a plane take off or land thanks to excellent soundproofing. Clear your head at Camelot Spa, where you can opt for massage therapy or a specialised skin treatment while taking in awe-inspiring views of Joburg – the best balm for a busy day – or enjoy the sleek, indoor heated swimming pool, hydro bath and steam room. After some pampering, head to Quills Restaurant, where an 18-metre porcupine mobile suspended from the ceiling sets the tone, while the spirit of Africa is reflected in authentic dishes like slow-cooked springbok shank infused with an apricot and almond merlot jus, and chicken galantine stuffed with pistachio nuts. SOUTHERN SUN
Set directly adjacent to the airport, the Southern Sun is both an architectural marvel and a biz traveller’s dream. With direct pedestrian access and stacked with 366 comfortable and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms, the hotel is hardly Plan B material. A continental breakfast buffet of fresh bread and pastries, cheeses and cold cuts freshens every morning, and dinners are prime time for Mediterranean-themed dishes at Bernoulli’s Restaurant, from angel hair pasta tossed with diced crayfish tail to pan-fried duck breast fillet served on a sautéed warm vegetable salad followed by homemade blueberry pie topped with whipped cream. Sneak to Caroline’s Day Spa & Salon for a hydration facial, aromatherapy massage, back wrap or hot oil hair treatment and you’ll feel as good as new before that big meeting. PREMIER HOTEL
A mere 2.7km from the airport, the Premier Hotel is pretty swanky for what could easily be another mediocre highway hotel. The 275-room hotel, buffeted by sprawling gardens, looks and feels a little like a tropical oasis – but with better amenities. Take a dip in the pool or, better yet, treat yourself to an Evolving Hammam package at Evolve Day Spa - a signature ritual based on old Turkish baths - that includes a full body cleanse and exfoliation in the hammam room plus a back, neck and shoulder massage. Before you crash, take some time to mingle at the bar and then take the party to the warm and welcoming Kubatana Restaurant for a dinner of high-end African fare. 73 Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, Kempton Park m 011 393 8000 1 www.premierhotels.co.za

ith everyone still self-isolating and social distancing, we know we’re going to be spending a lot more time at home for the foreseeable future. There’s not a huge amount that we can control right now, but one thing we can do is make our lives as comfortable as possible by keeping our home spaces clean and tidy. We’ve found just the brand to clean your house or apartment during this time – Housewife’s, available from Pick n Pay, SPAR and OK.
a long way!); Housewife’s Kitchen & Bathroom Cleaner in Ocean Breeze that’s tough on grease; Housewife’s Floor & Tile Cleaner in Ocean that’s tough on dirt; Housewife’s Citrus Gel Concentrated Multipurpose Cleaner that sanitises, deodorises and cleans simultaneously; Housewife’s Carpet Shampoo in Cotton Fresh for deep cleaning, odour masking, a fresh aroma and a softer surface; and the Housewife’s Foaming Bleach in Lemon to whiten and remove stains.
This super-affordable proudly South African brand produces a wide range of products, from all-purpose cleaner and bleach, to floor and tile cleaner and kitchen and bathroom cleaner. We all have a lot of time on our hands and are hyper-aware of cleanliness and germs in our homes at the moment, so why not plan to deep clean your home this weekend? Taking control of your home space by cleaning, tidying and decluttering can be really positive for your mindset.
We also highly recommend the Shower & Mildew cleaner to get your shower sparkling as well as the Oven Cleaner – simply leave your pots and pans to soak overnight and in the morning, you’ll be surprised at how easy the grime washes away. Overall, the Housewife’s range offers fantastic value for money and all the products smell lovely. The best part is that Housewife’s also offers luxurious hand washes and bubble baths as part of their range. The Gabriella Toasted Coconut Luxurious Hand Wash and Gabriella Lavender & Honey Luxurious Bubble Bath are perfect for a self-care session after deep cleaning. Yes, please!
There are a few products we recommend buying for a weekend of deep cleaning during self-isolation. These are the lemon scented Housewife’s Dishwashing Liquid (a little goes

Jess Clarke is the owner of Elizabeth Summer, a gorgeous proudly South African brand famed for its big customised hats, unique fedora-style hats, one-of-a-kind baskets and other accessories. We sat down with this girl boss to chat about her brand, autumn/winter launches and Mother’s Day gifts.
What made you start Elizabeth Summer? I’d just launched a big telecom brand in South Africa and knew then and there that it was my last event. I then went to New York for a friend’s wedding after not having a job for a few months, and something there inspired me to make my own hats. That’s how Elizabeth Summer came about in August 2016. The name came from my middle name, Elizabeth. What was the biggest challenge of starting your own business? Learning how to do accounts, deal with staff and clients as well as import without any real advice or guidance. It’s been a massive learning curve for me. On the flip side, the most rewarding part is to see people who I don’t know wearing my products. There’s no better feeling! Also, employing staff who were previously in very average jobs with no steady income. Where do you see Elizabeth Summer in the next four years? Hopefully sold to some big company. I’ll be on an island. *laughs* What are some of your bestselling items? I’d have to say our hats as they’re also our longest-standing product. What new releases can we expect this autumn/winter? I’m always in denial about the colder months! We’ll continue the boho look with our boho handbags, wool and cashmere beanies as well as classic accessories like cashmere scarves. We’ll also be selling beautiful fully sequinned jackets that I’ve designed as sequins are a big trend right now. The jackets will come in short and long options. What brands do you stock? In addition to our own Elizabeth Summer products, we stock Naudic clothing and resort wear, Chila Bags handbags and Quay Australia sunglasses.

Hello Joburg • May 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za
What would make the most special Mother’s Day gift? Our personalised sequin baskets are a real treat and something a bit different for Mother’s Day. Tell us a bit about your bridal offering. For summer brides, we offer our famous personalised hats, which come in the Madagascar straw or Ivory paper option, along with personalised kimono-style gowns and fleece slippers. For winter brides, we have our fleece gowns that come in many different colours and deliciously comfy sheepskin slippers. Our classic monogram or sequinned baskets, monogram clutch bags and monogram espadrilles are a must for every honeymoon no matter the season. Where do you enjoy getting pampered? I’m a big supporter of owner-run businesses such as Toast & Co in Craighall Park, where I get my nails done. I’m not a spa kind of gal ... I don’t have the patience to spend the day beautifying! Where’s your favourite place to eat out? Bellinis is an old favourite that I grew up going to. I literally remember going there in my baby seat when I was little. The menu is small, but all the food is simply delicious. I love this local spot because it’s nothing fancy but always has a great vibe. What are you currently watching on Netflix? Don’t be shocked, but Formula 1: Drive to Survive. Before that was Love is Blind, which was mindless and great!
