People of Joburg!

What are you crushing on at the moment? My new Canon 6D. Having a DSLR with wifi, which allows me to upload my DSLR images directly to my phone and then to Instagram, has changed my life. What is your favourite foodie find in the city? My current favorite is King Arabic Sandwich on Hanover Street in Mayfair. King Arabic is a takeaway joint run by a husband-and-wife team from Palestine.Their Middle-Eastern-style pastries are delicious, filling and cheap. 074-292-6191 | Corner of Hanover Street and 9th Avenue, Mayfair Why did you move to Joburg from America? That’s a long, long story, best told over a glass of wine. Briefly: I came for a man but stayed for the city. The rest of the story is on my blog.

What makes Joburg shine for you? The people. Joburg is a gritty, confusing city that can be hard to get to know at first. But if you find the right people to show it to you, Joburg is easy to fall in love with. Blogging for you means… Everything. My blog kept me going during some really tough times and it’s brought me so many amazing friends and experiences. Best of all, it’s given me a purpose and a reason to stay in Joburg. Instagram or Facebook? I have a blog, so obviously I depend on Facebook for sharing my posts. But Instagram is where my heart lies.

This year has been witness to the most extraordinary scenes of Parliamentary disorder ever, with fists flying, insults exchanged, mass walkouts and the deployment of SWAT teams in the House. Never before have overalls and berets been at the heart of potential darkness. The nation was astounded that not even load shedding could stop light from being cast on the shenanigans of our elected politicians. What is the solution? Where will we find relief ? Who can we look to for answers?

9:30am I start off my Sunday with breakfast at Mr Big Stuff in Braamfontein. So waffles and chicken with mustard syrup and Mac’n cheese deep fried squares. Winning! I am now ready to conquer the day. f/MrBigStuffZA 11:00am A trip round The Sheds in Fox street is in order. My first stop is at Happy Me Tea stand, where I get my regular Apple and Cinnamon milk tea with black pearls. This keeps me going for the walk around the market. I stock up on fresh organic veg, cheeses, flowers and other delicious snacks for the week. The Churros are a must, and I keep them for a late night snack.
www.1fox.co.za 12:30pm A walk just down the road to Monchichi for their Sunny Braai Days, which is the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Good music, a braai, beers and friends, all right in our beautiful Joburg city. 14:30pm I’m off to Melville to walk around the amazing new 27boxes container shopping centre. I stop in at my favourite clothing store - Journey Lifestyle (No 61, 4th st Meville). Owner of the store, Kyla, has a fantastic eye for beautiful fashion and will help you choose the perfect outfit.
www.27boxes.co.za 17:00 After so much walking and shopping, I’m off to meet some friends at Hell’s Kitchen in 7th street, Melville for some chill time and beer (or 2). Later on I order my favourite from their menu, the vegetarian soft shell tacos. I’m feeling brave, so end off the evening with a hell fire.

Mr Big Stuff- The Big Apple in Jozi town Get more bang for your buck with the all-new and super delicious Mr Big Stuff Restaurant in Braamfontein. Have your cake and eat it too should be their philosophy because this American style diner is all about indulgent satisfaction. And lets be honest Hello Joburgers we are all entitled to a day of pure indulgence (at least that’s what I keep telling myself.) The diner is pure happiness; no seriously the wallpaper engulfs this eccentric space with a thousand smile emoticons. So 2015! Current, innovative, contemporary and trendy, Mr Big Stuff is full of bottomless fun. The diner basically turns your dreams into a reality because if like me, your dream is fried, frizzled, gratifying junk food then this is the jackpot.
Next on the to eat list: the Crazy rebel Burger, a light soft bun, 120g beef patty, bacon, cheddar, fried onions, pickles and the secret Big Stuff sauce. Hashtag yum! And for dessert? Milkshakes of course. Try the chocolate and peanut butter or the coffee and condense milk but my fave is the banoffee caramel with sprinkles on top. Winning!

e’re taking a break from trend spotting this month. Our good friend, sports journalist Wardah Hartley, called us up for a fashion intervention. She had agreed to a feature on a popular television magazine programme. Wardah is usually most comfortable in her trendy sports gear but required her fashion fairy godfathers’ expertise in this instance. It’s not often that we get to put our trend-spotting abilities into practice under pressure! So we were only too keen to hit the ground running and take one for the team...
Wardah is usually seen sporting the latest in gym gear for her intense workout sessions. She required a ‘fashion fix’ in order to get the right look for her shoot.
Hamleys, the world’s oldest and most-loved toy shop, will be bringing fun, magic and entertainment to South Africa when their Cape Town and Johannesburg stores open in August 2015. The Toy shops will include thousands of quality toys, opportunities for children to play, engaging store design, expertise in service and amazing toy demonstration – all the unique features that make Hamleys “The Finest Toy Shop in the World!”
We went through Wardah’s closet and selected some items we thought would work well to create both dazzling day and night looks. A stunning Diane Von Furstenberg dress struck the perfect balance of casual sophistication…

e wined and dined and indulged in some of the finest food in the city. While Joburg is the largest manmade forest in the world, it also possesses some of the most decadent cuisine. Joburg has now become famed for its innovative eateries and here at The Hello Joburg Magazine; there is nothing we love more than showcasing what our beautiful city has to offer.
To start was the flash grilled calamari with garlic butter and a delightful caprese salad with bocconcini cheese, drizzled with basil pesto. It certainly got our taste buds talking. For main, most were showered with satisfaction at the seared salmon with a sesame crust, beautifully garnished and presented and others divulged the wonderment of the beef medallions.
The evening began with an educational brandy tasting from Oude Meester brandy and each one of our guests walked away with a glamorous bottle of the brandy. In its royal ambience and plush armchairs the Hello team and ten of our favorite foodies/social media influencers indulged in a lavish array of food by Maximiliien Restaurant.
Whilst being escorted through our culinary journey Edible Bouquets warmly honored us. They make tasteful and unique centerpieces and our guests were spoiled with Belgian chocolate dipped strawberry showstoppers… Heaven! Entrenched by the atmosphere our guests moved onto dessert, which was assorted with a divine chocolate tart complemented

What it means to be a
2015 WoMan
It’s not a question between beauty and brains because most of us have been blessed with both. Especially, when taking the elegant women on this cover for example as Anisha Patel stands triumphantly beside Miss Earth 2015, Ilze Saunders. Here’s the reason behind their smiles…
T
he Midori Eco Salon finds itself cosily enclosed in the first floor of Greenpark which happens to be one of the few eco-friendly buildings in Sandton. So when Anisha Patel stumbled upon it in 2012, it only made sense for her to complete her one-of-a-kind vision here. Creating a tranquil yet exclusive environment, a place where calmness is palpable and the atmosphere harmonious. Where women and men, alike, groom themselves in the lap of luxury without foregoing our environment. Anisha established her vision with the hopes of bringing societal change by questioning the use of consumed chemicals. Skin-deep isn’t always “superficial”. And Midori continually interrogates this belief by being the only organic and eco-friendly salon in the country! The powerhouse that is Anisha Patel, introduced a pioneering procedure known as the V Bar. This vaginal steaming treatment is known to have immense health benefits. So much so, that two of Midori’s previously infertile clients have fallen pregnant and are due to deliver healthy bundles of joy. Puts a new spin on going to get your hair done, right?! Midori literally means ‘green’ in Japanese! Although the style of the salon holds little
Asian influence, the customs of tranquillity, purity and sustainability come through quite strongly. This is because everything inside the Midori Eco Salon is recycled: from the crystallised chandeliers overhead, to the bamboo panels separating stations. Even their products are eco-conscious. Whether they’re unprocessed or PETA approved, Midori only endorses natural products. So you’re purely in good hands. Midori outstandingly offers fifteen services from head-to-toe as they pride themselves on teamwork, which highlights how multitalented they are. They have; skilled hair-stylists who laugh and listen clearly, nail artists who stroke your colours on blissfully, and skin beauticians who’ll caringly cure your hidden concerns. But with time being of the essence, Midori capitalises on their prime location with twenty-three staff members. Most of Midori’s employees are young women and experienced mothers from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, whom Anisha has hired to offer the opportunity of gaining success in the City of Gold with dignity.
Simply put, Midori takes care of all their clients with sophistication. They spruce up the hair of all ethnicities! So you can finally book that day of relaxation with your diverse group of friends without excluding anyone, black,

The salon feels like a home away from home. But unlike your real house, you’ll be welcomed with complimentary drinks and every guest has WiFi iPads installed in each grooming station. There are a variety of other seating arrangements so you can either chat or calm down with the latest magazines in hand while waiting for your stylist. But, Midori staff understand the fast-paced life you might live and certainly won’t keep you waiting long.
blonde or brunette. This is precisely why Anisha Patel shares this months’ cover with Miss Earth 2015, Ilze Saunders. Highly successful in her field because she enlightens and educates others on being more ecologically friendly through primal developments like planting seeds. Ilze is more than an ambassador for Midori because; she’s one of the women recurrently making it a successful establishment.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em – at some point you’re going to end up taking a selfie. They’ve over run our social media streams and on a day out it is not surprising not to see someone snapping a pic of themselves with their phone. Want to take the perfect selfie? I have 4 tips for you...
#1 Natural light: selfies always look better when taken outside in natural light. Avoid the harsh glare of fluorescent bulbs on your skin – they age you! #2 Tilt your head: pose at an angle or tilt your face slightly. This accentuates your cheekbones and makes your eyes appear bigger. #3 Phone placement is everything:
Always take your selfie with the phone above you at an angle to ensure you appear slimmer. Snapping direct on selfies is never flattering and double chins are guaranteed if the phone is angled below your face.
#4 Use those accessories:
A selfie stick might look a bit silly but it really does take the best shots. You can get more scenery into your selfie or include more of your friends. It also works fantastically if you want to film your surroundings. If you cannot bear the thought of a selfie stick trying something like the Q-PIC Selfie Shooter. You pair it with your phone via Bluetooth and then can use it as a remote to snap a pic, allowing you to set your phone up on a wall or much further from your face to ensure the best shot!

Happy selfie snapping!

Mi casa es su casa
housands of feet pass through her warm, open house daily. Whether they are hungry, looking for some time out or retail therapy, you can be sure they will find what they are looking for here. Meet Vicky Denyschen, the lady of the manor and General Manager of Clearwater Mall in the North West suburbs of Johannesburg. Home to some 250 shops and fast becoming one of South Africa’s premier shopping destinations, Clearwater Mall is no average house to manage. A destination for the whole family, Clearwater Mall offers world class shopping, top entertainment with the likes of its full NuMetro cinema complex with 3D technology in tow and of course some of Johannesburg’s most exclusive fashion retailers and restaurants. Running a shopping complex of this magnitude is no walk in the park, but Vicky runs a tight ship with a little help from her friends of course. In her own words “It is quite a challenge, but I am fortunate in having an amazing team of people working with me.” Vicky has worked at Clearwater for 5 years but has been in property management for over two decades. Working her way from a receptionist at Sammy Marks Square in Pretoria 23 years ago, Vicky has certainly made it to the top of the chain. It’s a full time job running the mall but Vicky and her team seem to have it all under control. “My team all take turns at being duty manager for every day of the week and over weekends and they efficiently manage to deal with most issues, it is only when we have a “sticky” situation that I get involved and fortunately this does not happen too often.”
18
With women’s month close to her heart, there are certainly activities happening this month at the mall. “We are having a breakfast banquet with Mr. SA to raise funds and awareness for Hello Joburg • August 2015 • www.gohello.co.za
his charity. We are also going to be spoiling all women on Women’s Day by handing out free gifts on the 9th August.”
With her marketing hat on, Vicky offers insight into the business of running a mall. “We focus on local trade and increasing our catchment area through advertising further afield, constantly improving on our retail offering and ensuring a pleasant, inviting ambience in a clean, secure and convenient shopping environment. We have a very loyal customer base who takes pride in “their” mall and we receive constant feedback from our shoppers on what they would like to see in the mall.” But it’s not just all happy shoppers and weekend specials. Vicky and her team manage a variety of challenges that the average shopper would never consider. “It is certainly a challenge dealing with large crowds, but we do a bi annual emergency evacuation so the team are accustomed to and are very good at managing crowds. Security issues are naturally not quite as easy as criminals are constantly changing their modus operandi and one can never predict what the crime will be or how it will be carried out. Our main focus is to ensure that the criminals get out of the centre as quickly as possible to minimise injury to staff, tenants and the public”. When it comes to family time it is spent as far away from shopping malls as humanly possible, the only shopping done over weekends is at Vicky’s local Spar. As for her favourite shop at Clearwater – we are not getting an answer to that one “I will decline from saying which stores are my favourites” Vicky says “as I love all my “children” equally for different reasons” – spoken like a true mom indeed. ever heard of a resto-bar? That’s ok (that is why you have us). But why not rather see it and try it for yourself ? In fact there is a whole lot of resto-bar trendiness happening on the corner of Maxwell Drive and Edison Crescent at the Sunninghill Village Centre just waiting for you. Think of the resto-bar as the sweet spot for all things foodie, boozie and social. It doesn’t get any sweeter than the Beach Blanket Bohemia - an ideal setting for some serious fressing, socializing and living.
Whether in the formal dining area for a romantic dinner for two flanked by crystal cut chandeliers and a dreamy, homey fireplace or a more austere style business lunch, Beach Blanket Bohemia has the right fit for whatever you are feeling. And if it’s a total chill out you’re after then the sunny terrace and bar area on a Highveld winters day is for you – often accompanied by some live music as the sun sets. Its Mediterranean style menu is known for its fresh produce and contemporary slant which
Old meets the new in perfect balance and harmony. feeds into (excuse the pun) Beach Blanket Bohemia’s ethos that ‘old meets the new in perfect balance and harmony.’ From flapjacks and double decadent French toast for breakfast to salmon tartare and carne platter for dinner, you may need to wrap your palate (and waist) around the extensive menu. And everyone is going to chip in and make suggestions when it’s time to order so allow for a cellphone time out on arrival so everyone can peruse the menu first (alternatively good luck getting everyone to decide on what they want while you sit there salivating)

The regulars may suggest the traditional Spanish style Oxtail or prawn curry but we’re particularly impressed with the risotto (especially the spring veg) and dessert sections of the menu. But if all you eat is a gourmet sandwhich followed by the steamy chocolate fondant you won’t be sorry. Rui Jorge Do Rosario steers this Mediterranean dream ship. Anyone that has dined at his establishment will more than likely wax delicious about the legendary hospitality that will keep you coming back for more. The restaurant has a delightfully comprehensive wine list including a selection of international options and a sublime cocktail menu that offers the all-time favourites made to utter perfection. Beach Blanket Bohemia is the perfect venue for any function you could imagine too. Whether you want a private or corporate function, large or small, all needs will be perfectly met and then some. Centrally located in the happening, new Sunninghill Village Centre, Beach Blanket Bohemia is a must for those of you seeking a new take on the traditional dining experience. The Westcliff Deli -
Four Seasons Johannesburg The art of food In December 2014 The Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff was born. The hotel has cemented its grounding in the city of gold, handing over an overwhelming stature of elegance and sophistication. We all know that The Four Seasons chain is the champion in hospitality, and The Deli is no different.
The hotel boasts five modern restaurants, bars and lounges and The Deli stands out because it overthrows all your expectations and surpasses your assumptions. Deli at the Westcliff is affordable, comfortable and revolutionary. The fact that you can create your own salad at the salad bar and concoct your own smoothie at the smoothie bar is a reason to visit on its own. Never mind the daily, freshly home baked pastries, which are out of this world delicious. You could opt to be boring and go for the dark chocolate éclair however I would highly recommend you deter from the norm and try the raspberry éclair- bursting with virtuousness and oozing goodness, it is out of this world divine! The Chocolate and hazelnut tart is another favorite and so is the fudge, which is packaged to go. Everything emerging from the Deli is delightful so if you do want to take a slice

home with you, your gluttony would be forgiven. What I love most about the Deli is the free Wi-Fi (which is functioning and efficient) and the fact that it is soon to be a 24-hour dining spot. At the moment it operates from six to six but it will soon open its doors 24/7. So if you’re cycling through the parks and want an early breakfast, if you’re searching for a stylish location for a quick business meeting or even if you want to grab a take-away baguette, this is the ideal location! It is simple: the Deli serves hearty food on the go, with big flavors and exceedingly attentive staff and the best news? I guarantee, you won’t leave feeling poorer than when you arrived.

Sprinkle with red currants, 1 strawberry desiccated coconut and enjoy!
Handy Tips: if you have overripe bananas, simply peel skins, cut in half and freeze them in an airtight container to use for a smoothie emergency. Instead of buying new glass jars, collect glass jam jars instead. Soak in hot water to loosen any labels, peel off and use benzene to remove any leftover paper or glue. Wash thoroughly and use to serve smoothies, cocktails, mueslis, cereals, yoghurt, detox water, or chia pudding. You can even use large glass jars for storing deconstructed salads for lunch! This helps prevent salad ingredients from going soggy. Hope you enjoy ladies!

ith a love for baking since she was a young girl, Dora says she navigated the ins and outs of the kitchen herself and taught herself how to knead, sieve and ice. No small feat for a little girl but she put in the work. “I would follow recipes closely and even when I was in primary school I would bake something and compare it to the picture.” She has certainly seen the industry change and evolve from all angles, from what was being served to how it was made “Back in the day we still used cold stoves and as the technology improved so did my techniques.” Dora relocated from Durban to Johannesburg at the end of 1997. Previously a supervisor in a factory and then an Edgar’s outlet in Durban, she needed a career change and baking was her truly happy space. And she loves living in Johannesburg now “My favourite part about Johannesburg is the fast pace lifestyle. I feel that things happen on a greater scale here in Johannesburg. Everything about this city keeps me active. I myself forget my age sometimes.” When it comes to her signature dish, Dora keeps it hearty and homely (and clearly calorie laden as well – don’t say we didn’t warn you). “A lot of people would
“I always receive the nicest compliments on my milk tart and that makes me proud mention the most elaborate desserts but I believe my traditional milk tart is a signature dish that even Mr McBain (our General Manager) himself loves.” As with all good recipes, this one has its own origin, story and organic growth. “It was my mother’s recipe originally but then as life went on I developed my own version of the recipe. My mother’s recipe didn’t have cream. I now make mine with cream as it gives the milk tart a better and fuller flavour. And it would seem that those who eat it, surely taste all the love that goes in. “I always receive the nicest compliments on my milk tart and that makes me proud of my milk tart.” Having said that, her personal favourite would have to be a carrot cake. “A wise tail says it doesn’t make you fat.” One of the most essential technique’s went it comes to baking, and often overlooked is mixing. “A great technique in baking would be mixing consistency and to avoid over mixing which will affect the end product. I think ultimately you can have the most beautiful looking cake but if it doesn’t taste good then it defeats the purpose of baking.” Nothing makes her happier than satisfied customers “The thing I love most about my job is when people are satisfied with the dishes we serve. That in some way I get to share my passion with guests. That is truly a blessing. When it comes to role models and other chefs, Dorah says that although he doesn’t specialise in baking, she is a big fan of Gordon Ramsay H

tart your evening off at the Lobby Bar, which is sexy and stylish, unwind and relax as you uncover the weeks tales and begin to engulf yourself in the surroundings of the luxurious Park Inn Hotel, Sandton.
A warm vibe and comfortable atmosphere makes this hotel one of the most under rated. The hotel is not egocentric or narcissistic but rather quaint, elegant, simple and sophisticated. One of the top reasons to visit this hotel would be for The RBG Grill. This fantastic grill restaurant is buzzing and is prepared for the hustle and bustle of the typical Joburger as well as international travellers. The staff are friendly, hospitable and most importantly approachable- service with a smile. Now if it is flavorsome, mouthwatering cooking you after, well this is just the hangout. It is time to immerse yourself in all that is food. For starters if you’re rather daring then opt for the creamy mushroom soup, unique and moreish or the chunky vegetable and tomato soup. If you’re more of the boring type then opt for the traditional Caesar Salad, thoroughly enjoyable or the crisp, fresh chunky Greek salad served with a honey and mustard dressing. The star of the show has to be the grill options: the succulent beef fillet steak, the juicy lamb chops, the BBQ pork ribs and the well spiced spatchcock baby chicken. Although the main dishes are generous and filling, there is always room for dessert and the Cappuccino Crème Brule is the only way to go. Yummy! RBG Grill brings a touch of admirable gastronomic flair into the city. This restaurant scores top with me, it is a culinary victory and one, which will continuously remain in the lead.

otox does not cure ageing and facelifts are not for everybody. Patients and physicians often tend to forget the basics. Alleviating stress, stopping smoking and applying a sun block daily to your face is more important than any aesthetic facial treatment you will ever receive. Have a relaxing massage, have a few sessions with your Reiki master and hit the gym. Stress hormones significantly accelerate skin aging. Get rid of the stress in your life and you will already see positive changes. Well-established features of the ageing skin are diminished levels of collagen and its surrounding structures in the deep layers of the skin. A healthy skin contains significant levels of collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and lots of essential ‘goo stuff’ that help to provide the skin with its ‘youthfulness’ and integrity. “Micro-trauma” when applied or delivered to the skin in the form of a chemical, a needle, a laser or a cosmeceutical is healthy, non-scarring and rejuvenating
Klassic Massage
when prescribed and administered by an aesthetician correctly. They all result in the production of collagen and its surrounding constituents. The term “neocollagenesis” means the production of new collagen in the skin. Anything that creates micro-trauma to the skin results in neocollagenesis. Micro needling, microdermabrasion, laser therapy and chemical peels all result in neocollagenesis; yet their method of action is different. The choice of method depends solely on down time. Certain treatments take longer to heal, whilst some require more sessions. Treatments need to be tailored to the specific individual, their requirements and their lifestyle. We prefer to use a combination of therapies in order to achieve the end result, always keeping in mind the importance of a sunblock and an anti-oxidant serum. While ageing is inevitable, the grace with which you age is determined by the care you give your skin each and every day.

APARTHEID MUSEUM The basic principle behind apartheid was simple – segregate everything. Cut a clean line through a nation to divide black from white and keep them divided. SAB WORLD OF BEER The World of Beer came into being in 1995, an iconic year in South Africa’s history. It was the country’s first full year as a democracy, the year we came together as a nation to lift the Rugby World Cup trophy, and the year SAB celebrated a century of brewing mastery. To commemorate this milestone, the company opened what was then known as the Centenary Centre, a museum designed to showcase the history of South African beer. 15 Helen Joseph Street,Newtown 011 836 4900 www.worldofbeer.co.za THE DITSONG NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY The South African National War Museum was officially opened on 29 August 1947 by the then Prime Minister of South Africa, Field Marshal J C Smuts. In 1975 the Museum’s name was changed to the South African National Museum of Military History and its scope was expanded to include the
history of all military conflict in which South Africans have played a part. National Arts Festival 2015 Much like oxygen, humans cannot survive without heART. Of course, this remains a subjective statement but what good is a book without a reader? Understanding this concept forms the basis of everyone’s journey through the National Arts Festival – its 260 page programme. Artists are given the opportunity to submit their works for review a few months prior to the production. And although it is not entirely certain what pieces are selected for, other than the sheer brilliance of their content, we are able to note that they must be of a certain calibre. Perhaps this could be one of the shortfalls (or successes) of this festival, a lack of theming the general content. Having watched over twenty productions in the space of ten days, it’s safe to say that shows seem far more interesting once you’ve entered these dusty streets. Once you’ve spoken to the Rhini people and ‘listened to the ground’. This included shows like; “What the Water Gave Me” by the UJ Arts and Culture Department, “Blue” by The Cape Dance Company, “Cape Mongo” by Francois Knoetze, “We Didn’t Come to Hello for The Croissants” by POPArts Productions and the astounding “Siva” by the Vuyani Dance Ensemble which will be showcased at The Market Theatre in August.

You love winter because…
My birthday falls around winter time (May 13), so that’s definitely the main reason I love winter. Another reason why I love winter is the fashion. It’s such an awesome time to really go out and look stunning in trendy coats, boots etc.
What have you learnt about yourself during your journey as a news anchor? My journey as news anchor has not been easy, however having started in Radio helped me transition into television without too many obstacles. I learn something new every day. The beauty of the career path I have chosen, is the potential to grow and dominate spaces beyond broadcasting.
You’re an Entrepreneur. What’s new and exciting about your latest projects? My company, The Network Media is still in its’ formative stages and for me the most exciting part thus far, is working on strategies and content that will change the face of broadcasting and publishing in our country.
Did You Know?
Tell us something about you that will shock us. I can sing…really well actually.
If you had to choose three people to have dinner with dead or alive, who would they be? 1. My dad, he passed away when I was still very young. 2. Oprah Winfrey 3. Cyril Ramaphosa – Deputy President
What is your biggest fear? My biggest fear is getting to the end of my life not having reached my full potential and not living out my purpose.

Also on the ground floor is a reception, library, meeting room (which can also be booked for the residents’ business meetings), and the Seconds Lounge, a licenced restaurant primarily catering for breakfasts and light daily meals. “Our timing for this development is carefully chosen,” says Ajay. “Rosebank and Sandton are engaged in billions of Rands worth of post-recession expansion and our developments particularly support conference venues, short stays and company staff relocations. “We are providing for a specific need for business travellers and family visitors to the area. In terms of budgets, MAX offers 4-star serviced apartments with the highest standards of accommodation and facilities. Max is surrounded by some of the best of Joburg restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues as well as Wanderers Stadium and
Golf Club. For the needs of our residents we are integrated with specialist service providers in the neighbourhood like restaurants, dry cleaners, gyms and car rental. Thrupps supermarket for example is 200m away and is ideal for quality shopping and delivery.” Sharing MAX’s services with those of neighbouring businesses matches the contemporary method used by 5-star hotels in major urban centres worldwide. Both Rosebank and Sandton are linked to extensive malls which offer travellers a variety of options for dining and entertainment. MAX’s location a few minutes’ drive midway between both centres, and flanked along Rivonia Road by scores of cafes and clubs, takes the same Europe-style approach to sharing its business with its community. “Our guests can be delivered to their choice of these venues and picked up when they’re ready to return. In terms of convenience and security our market research indicates this is a priority for visitors to Johannesburg and Sandton. We are also a few minutes’ drive from the Sandton City and Rosebank Gautrain stations. Guests can call MAX reception when they need to be picked up and meet our driver at street level.”
Priya manages the style, décor and furnishings of all the READAM projects, sourcing her designs and materials from leading international designers throughout South Africa. She launched and ran the new company and its start-up developments from 2008. That same attention to detail and value for money service is applied to the tariff for the 4-star rated MAX apartments today. The three-bedroom, two bathroom garden apartments cost R2 950 a night. The executive two bedroom apartments are R2 750. The standard two bedroom apartments are R1 950. The executive studios are R1 650. The normal studio, R1 390. READAM is a small company with endless vision for the growth potential of South Africa’s mid-level property market. Gooderson Kloppenheim Country Estate I
t is no wonder that this estate was once a popular area for monarchs and royalty to visit and settle in. Hello Joburgers you simply have zero excuse not to visit Gooderson’s Kloppenheim weekend retreat. Conveniently situated only two hours out of Johannesburg this is the perfect weekend getaway. It is affordable, tranquil and absolutely unforgettable. This place is sure to put a spring back in your step. The art of country living exists right here at Kloppenheim and a weekend away may just not be enough. On top of the mountains lies this gorgeous escape dwelling in nature’s excellence. So dust off your shoes, say cheers and pull out a glass of wine as you indulge in some of the most breathtaking views in the Highlands Meander. Whilst the views are spectacular, what makes this location stand out is the staff. Hardy and cheerful, they are accommodating, welcoming, friendly and always aim to please. They have a can-do attitude and make you feel right at home by constantly going out of their way to make your stay that much more memorable. Because of their passion and energy, this flows throughout the entire estate, and makes for an easy verdict to return. Enjoying the open spaces that this estate has to offer, there are ten

thousand cherry trees and a mixture of thirty thousand apple and pear trees. There are six majestic trout dams and if you have never fished before this is certainly the best time to dive right in. For the kids there is even a dam specifically allocated for them to fishwelcoming everybody, young and old. What a delight for the whole family. If trout fishing doesn’t tickle your fancy then why not not opt for horse riding, or hiking trails, if you like to explore, or clay pigeon shooting or swimming. There is also an attractive outdoor kiddies play area where lots of fun can be had, a wonderfully whimsical outdoor space with more spectacular views. If you’re perhaps a little less active, you can engage in bird watching, laze in your veranda chair and withdrawal into the spellbinding views (not forgetting to say hi to Dennis the residential cat).
sumptuous breakfasts served in the enclosed terrace to four-course dinners in The Three Twigs. There is also a charming old-fashioned pub where one can dine, adjacent to the wine cellar, where some of the best local and international wines and ports can be sampled. Recommended are the homemade chicken spring rolls and an absolutely favorite is the mouth-watering trout of course. For dessert the chocolate Bar-one cake is an absolute delight. But really the choice is yours as the menu is extensive and vibrant. With a nod to the ever-changing scenery, this destination compliments your weekend getaway. This place is a sanctuary and will allow your mind to reel as you digest all its beauty. H
The accommodation is affectionately gracious. Some may say that the rooms seem antiquated but it is this old school, rustic charm that creates such a comforting ambience. With thirty-four luxury hotel suites all encompassed in a lovely stone cottage and ten elegant two bedroomed self-contained lodges, each beautifully appointed room has a magnificent view of the rolling hills. You’ll find so much to love in this serene mountain retreat. Whether in winter enjoying the enchanting fireplace and heated floors or basking in the summer sunshine, Kloppenheim is the kind of landscape where magic always happens. The venue boasts a few dining areas. Each will spoil you with culinary delights from

motoring I
t’s Women’s Day this month. In celebration of all you fine ladies out there, I’ve put together a list of cars befitting you, Jozi’s real heroes, you glamour girls! Before choosing the cars I did, I conducted some research - an opinion poll on Facebook. My deduction after the poll lead me to believe that women just like men love fast, sexy and sometimes big cars.
So let’s begin with something sassy: it’s perfect if you are single, as it’s a sport coupé - the Audi TT says you are ready to mingle. Let me begin by saying I’m a fan - I owned the first generation Audi TT and liked its successor so much, I bought it too. I light up when given the chance to review the third generation TT, a metallic black version, with a toffee coloured leather trim. The optional sports seats are spectacular: a family member looked at them and remarked how similar the detailing was to her prized Mont Blanc laptop bag. The finish and quality is equal in standard to that of Mont Blanc - outstanding. The TT’s interior is spectacular in fact: it is so far ahead of the pack and makes its competitors look dated, while the third
generation TT looks futuristic. The current models available in South Africa are either the 2.0TFSI turbocharged 2WD or the grip friendly Quattro, which is a somewhat more expensive (R84 000). Both are fitted with Audi’s highly accomplished 6-speed S-tronic dual clutch automatic transmission with no manual option as yet. It sounds like a regurgitation of the previous generation’s specs, but it’s anything but. The new TT is the sportiest version of itself in driving character, as opposed to its predecessors - the result: a hugely rewarding driving experience. The TT’s engine generates 169kW and 370N.m of torque, enabling it to dart from 0-100km/h in a dashing 5.3 seconds (Quattro) to 5.9 seconds depending on the model. The new TT pays homage to the original TT from 2000. It also incorporates the overall presence of the second generation, although taking on the new three-dimensional single frame grille that is much broader and flatter than that of the previous model. Although a gorgeous car at almost any angle, the true revolution is in the third generation’s drive and interior. It is the rebirth of the icon. The Audi TT is best seen, though its exhaust roar is a titillating audio note to the ears. It is yours from R585 000 and up to R669 000 for the Quattro version. This car’s a poser: see it rolling into a parking bay outside a sexy eatery in Morningside’s shopping Centre.
The TT’s interior is spectacular in fact: it is so far ahead of the pack and makes its competitors look dated 54

Performance and refinement.
It’s been six years since Jaguar has had a compact executive sedan in its arsenal of roaming pedigree. Good things come to those who wait, because this new Jaguar XE sports sedan promises to be worth the pause. The XE is the most advanced, efficient and refined sports saloon that Jaguar has ever produced. It is a Jaguar to its core. The first of a new generation of cars to be launched on Jaguar’s state-of-the-art, all new advanced aluminium architecture: the lightweight aluminium construction creates an incredibly strong body, as well helping to deliver power with responsive handling and refinement with a beautiful design. XE brings together the latest innovation and technology. It is packed with systems that empower the driver and enhance the driving experience, like pairing your phone via an app that allows you to control the air-conditioning settings. XE rewrites the rules and it is a wakeup call for every other car in its class - watch out BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. You connect with XE the moment you slide into the form-hugging seats. Directly ahead are two large, sports car analogue dials and message centre directly inspired by the F-TYPE. You grip the chunky sports steering wheel. Next to you, the raised centre console, which adds to the cockpit feel, while
the stepped dashboard elegantly sweeps away - there resides the very latest in Jaguar touchscreen technology. Press the Start button and XE awakes. Performance and refinement. XE’s petrol engines offer power and responsiveness throughout the rev range, while delivering reduced emissions and CO2. The two 2.0 turbocharged engines, one petrol with 177kW and the other diesel with 132kW, provide six cylinder refinement with all the benefits of four cylinder motoring - reduced fuel consumption and lower cost of ownership. The 3.0 V6 250kW supercharged petrol engine, is a mainstay of the F-TYPE range. Supercharging provides linear power delivery and instant access to high levels of torque at all engine speeds. All three engine variations are mated to a slick shifting 8-speed automatic gearbox. Jaguar’s XE is available from November, with prices ranging from approximately R450 000 up to around R700 000. The XE is an exciting way to leave your mark without having to cock your leg. The new Jaguar XE would find itself cruising from Virgin Active Alice Lane, travelling quickly into the parking garages of the financial corporates in and around the Sandton business node.

Brand New Swag a floating grille, and the celebrated T-shaped ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights. Not forgetting the inside… in fact, with possibly even more emphasis placed on the XC90’s interior - it’s a serene and relaxing environment. Combining the finest natural materials such a leather, wood and crystal with a calming and luxurious take on Scandinavian design. Each detail is designed to make driving simpler, more enjoyable and less stressful.
Volvo, the suave Swedish brand has an all new flagship SUV designed like no other Volvo before it in their XC90. And, the T8 version comes with a divine Orrefors crystal gear-lever! A harmonious design - pure, uncluttered luxury, with advanced safety and comfort for all seven of its passengers. That is Volvo’s promise regarding their all-new flagship XC90 SUV. Any mother either has or secretly wants an SUV, a luxury one. Large and in charge, sitting proudly on the road, while commanding attention, yet shielded from the worries of the urban rat race. So, it is a no-brainer with Volvo’s promise and a mother’s desire that the new XC90 would be a possible choice for a new SUV.
Volvo likes things simple and safe, with their focus being innovations that are designed to improve life. Efficient power, connectivity and safety, Volvo calls these Drive-E, Sensus and IntelliSafe. South Africa is set for arrival on the XC90 this month. The initial XC90 AWD D5 First Edition was priced at R1 050 000 and were sold online only, during April. 18 of these were sold in South Africa. If you want one of these gorgeous SUV’s expect the pricing to start at R804 000 and top out at R 1 066 400 for the flagship twinengine T8 AWD in R-Design Geartronic model.

Being Scandinavian, and the fact that the all-new XC90 marks a turning point for the Volvo brand - innovation in design, refinement, comfort and style are paramount. & homedecor Saint-Gobain Challenges South Africa to put Stand 47 to the Test… in Real Time. Can a luxury home keep itself warm and comfortable without electrical heating in the dead of a Highveld winter? This is the challenge multinational Saint-Gobain has set by inviting key individuals around the country, to partake in the Stand 47 Winter test.
S
outh Africans are in the midst of a cold and dark winter as load shedding forges ahead and energy costs have increased by almost 12 percent. While millions of households will endure cold spells to keep down their energy costs, multinational SaintGobain encourages the nation that they have a solution. With their latest Winter Test already underway at Stand 47, the company is working tirelessly to find solutions that will have long-term environmental and economic benefits. Having endured frigid temperatures and higher energy costs last winter, many South Africans are already tightening their belts to spend less this winter, but it need not be the case, says Kerry Henning, Marketing Manager for Saint-Gobain. “What we need to see is a shift toward sustainable building and renovation practice, as it is now becoming an economic necessity,” she explains. “Building sustainably is not only energy efficient and cost-effective long-term, it is luxurious from a comfort and quality point of view, and through the Winter Test at Stand 47, we hope to show South Africans how in practice this can significantly change their lives.”
We are inviting anybody with a sincere interest in building better to apply to be a Winter Test Pilot 56

Stand 47 in Real Time To best illustrate their commitment to sustainable building, Saint-Gobain have invited leading editors, journalists, celebrities and the general public to stay in the home for two days during the coldest months on the Highveld, with the agreement that they will not use any electrical heating. They are so confident in the efficiency of the home that they are willing to risk live tweets and diary updates from the home by the participants, as they share their exact conditions in the home at any given point during their stay. A range of guests is due to stay in the home over the remainder of winter, and their feedback will be live tweeted. Further, the home’s internal and external temperatures are published live on Stand 47.co.za, along with minute-by-minute energy consumption tracking. “We are inviting anybody with a sincere interest in ‘building better’ to apply to be a Winter Test Pilot” says Henning. The public are able to apply on www.stand47.co.za.

The south african flag
T
he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country.
