Check out our centre spread for a complete review of six beautiful wines and stand a chance to win a dining experience at Signature on us! See page 37 for more. People of Joburg, go out and celebrate that special woman in your life or if you are that special woman then just go out and celebrate! “The empowered woman is powerful beyond measure and beautiful beyond description”. Words Danita Pilley

What makes you feel empowered as a woman? I am empowered by the knowledge that I stand on the shoulders of giants. Women who came before me, and under more difficult circumstances, carved the way for me to enjoy the opportunities I now have.

cover feature Seeing as August is Women’s Month, we decided that there’s no better way to celebrate than by sharing the story and passion of the highly inspired and creative woman behind Restuarant Mosaic at The Orient.

Chantel DARTNALL riving towards the gates of The Orient for the first time is certainly something you will never forget. Behind those gates lies what can only be described as a small world of its own. The beautiful grounds, Moorish and Moroccan themed buildings decorated with artefacts gleaned from the families travels around the world and views that will take your breath away effortlessly creates a space that embodies peace and tranquillity in every sense.

She does admit that many more people now visit them to see what all the hype is about and adds that it has always been the team’s primary focus to ensure that everything is always perfect, this can be challenging, but is certainly a challenge she welcomes with open arms.

The array of beautifully created dishes paired with the finest wines from around the world create a symphony of joy that will stay with you forever. It’s clear to see why Chantel recently took home the accolade of the Best Lady Chef 2017 at The Best Chef Awards in Warsaw and Restaurant Mosaic became the first restaurant in Africa to win the prestigious wine spectator award.

The menus run in 6-month cycles – ”From Equinox to Equinox” and as soon as the new menu is launched the team starts working on the next one. The process takes at least 6 months to create as every element get’s tested and refined until it’s perfect.

“All chefs go through the same challenges and the same journey, winning something like this makes you realise the responsibility of it all and the importance that you have in your role as a chef to create unforgettable experiences”.

10

Hello Joburg • August 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

“Our focus is on how we can relate nature on a plate – using the seasonal ingredients that I love, and then focusing on the flow through the menu. The first step is the idea or scene”. For the current menu, titled Samsarana it’s all about discovering the harmony in nature. The name means an evolution if you will, and Chantel’s menu follows the cycle of life and nature perfectly. Her favourite dish on this menu is a dessert called Road to Rocamadour – inspired by their trip there in autumn. The plate is filled with yellows, ambers and reds, in the form of edible chocolate leaves and depicts the vibrancy of the season – and of course when the dish arrived the entire table dissolved in to oohs and aahs of beauty.

Words: and Images: Supplied.

We asked her if winning this award had changed anything for her, and gracious as always, Chantel shared that it’s not about the awards for her and her team, but the confirmation that guests are enjoying their experience and return again and again.

Whether someone is coming for the first, second or fifth time, their experience is paramount and ensuring that her guests are always amazed is something that is very important to them.

cover feature

The legendary wine cellar at Mosaic is something to behold, and most of the wines featured on the wine list are hand-picked and purchased to be paired with Chatel’s style of cooking. Chantel embraces working with her new sommelier team, who are filled with fresh, new ideas and palates. For the first two weeks of their annual break in June this year the entire team visited the Champagne region in France, where they spent time making friends with the winemakers and selecting the new Champagnes that will be added to the cellar for use in the next few years. We had to know her guilty pleasure, and with a giggle, Chantel shares that it’s cookies. “I go through phases, Jolly Jammers, crunchies - right now it’s Woolies coconut dunkers - you will always find me with a packet of biscuits nearby – they are my go to!” Wondering if she ever takes a day off? Chantel shares that Mondays are usually her days to unwind. You’ll likely find her locked away at home in her pyjamas, bingeing on series and spending time with her family. Cookbooks are her form of meditation and are the only books she reads. Chantel admits to having a bit of a cookbook addiction and has a rather extensive collection that she has acquired over the past 20 years. Upon her advice for women who wish to succeed in business, Chantel says “You need to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve in your head. That’s what drives you–you need to stay true to it. Don’t compromise, when you compromise, the passion is gone. Obviously, as a small business, there are things you must do, but she admits that the best advice she ever received was - if you are a designer spend 90% of the time designing and only 10% on the other things – otherwise you are not doing the thing that makes you happiest. From happiness comes growth.” For the experience of a lifetime, do pop in. Neighbourhoods

The Parks I t’s very larney to tell people that you live in The Parks darling. It leaves people wondering if your parents left you packets of gold under the floorboards or regretting that they never did that BCom after school. Either way, haters gonna hate, so let them. The Parks have possibly become one of the trendiest neighbourhoods to hang your hat in Jozi these days. Property prices are very much on the up and upper with homes going for anything from R3.5 million and then some. Guess we can’t all be living that “park life” – nah mean? So, what’s the big attraction? The Parks precinct is well-established with beautiful homes and wide roads. It’s also one of those 'burbs where issues are resolved quickly. No water? No problem. One of the residents will take to social media and sort

that out chop chop. Living here also comes with being in one of many annoying WhatsApp groups with people complaining about loud parties and yapping dogs #justsaying. The neighbourhood boasts some of the country’s best-known schools from St Johns College and The Ridge to Kingsmead College and Parkview Junior – a big drawcard for parents of school going humans. For the big people, it’s the home of The Pirates Sports Bar, Dunkeld Bowling Club and some of Joburg’s oldest and coolest restaurants. If the idea of good looking people walking their dogs on weekends, overachievers taking early morning runs and fancy cars cruising the streets sounds like your vibe, then here’s a neighbourhood to aspire too. If you’re not convinced (hello what’s wrong with you?), then perhaps one of these spots may peak your interest. We certainly had a good time

RED CHILLI SPICE RESTAURANT An authentic North Indian spot, anyone who has eaten here will tell you that the food is authentic and delicious. We’re particularly fond of the samosas. Which ones? All of them. Order a mix of vegetable, potato, chicken and lamb if you want to try the whole gambit. As for mains, the Chicken Korma is a knockout and the Lamb Madras is worth writing home about. There are also tons of things on the menu for the often-forgotten vegetarians out there. We love that the kitchen caters for kiddies and people with weird food allergies too. Big up: There is also a nice selection of craft beer to cool off some of the hotter curries. 345 Jan Smuts Ave, Craighall Park m 082 727 7798 1 www.redchillispice.co.za

DOLCE CAFÉ Ideal for the freelance types, this Italian restaurant and pastry shop in Craighall Park is fully licensed, has great Wi-Fi, serves a full breakfast (pancakes are also a full breakfast), lunch and dinner – which means you can camp out for most of the day. Who needs an office! Then when you’ve worked super hard all day and made tons of moola (so you can live in the neighbourhood) treat yourself to something sweet. The patisserie is out of this world. Big up: Dolci Café provides a daily Dolci dinner for those with busy schedules. e often say that we could think of nothing better than Jozi mastering its very own blow dry bar. Well, our fantasy has become a reality! There is a brand-new blow dry bar in the Parks. Now, this isn’t your average blow dry bar, this is every girl’s dream come true. Mimosas on tap, chick flicks in the background, lavish flower ceilings, pink velvet love seats, white marble finishes and heavenly fresh roses. At our offices, we firmly believe in investing in your hair because it’s the only crown you never take off and so, we popped on over to Jozi’s newest hair addition that opened on May 13th. Because all things are possible with bubbles and blow-dries we knew we were in for a treat. Owner Bridget Bassage is the mastermind behind this brand, having been influenced by L.A style blow dry bars. The concept is simple, select your blow-dry from one of five styles (The Jozi, The Cape Town, The London, The

New York or the Paris), and leave the rest up to the professionals. You can also add a treatment mask, a braid or a ten-minute scalp massage. Oh, and boys, we didn’t forget about you. They also offer a men’s service scalp treatment cleanse and stimulating wash, which revitalises the scalp and includes a massage (for just R250). It costs R200 for short hair blow-dries and R230 for long hair blow-dries. Also, it’s worth mentioning that they use the highest quality, Kevin Murphy paraben and sulphur free products, and the top of the range GHD styling tools. You can also drop your weave off in the am and collect it in the pm before a night out or special occasion. So, what are you waiting for? Book your session with your hairapist today. 2, 30 4th Avenue, Parkhurst m 011 482 7361 Q @blowdryco 1 www.thecountess.co.za Hello Joburg • August 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

GHAZAL MELROSE

North Indian cuisine that will melt your heart like butter on fresh, hot roti.

W

Words Bianca Spinner Image Supplied

e don’t know about you but when it comes to winter soul food there is only one cuisine that we’re hankering after. Indian, North Indian to be exact. So, because we care deeply about your winter bellies, we thought it would be fitting to try one of our all-time fave food dens in the city, Ghazal in Melrose Arch. It’ll melt your heart like butter on fresh, hot roti. For those who prefer posh plating, curry feasts oozing with Durban and a tasteful ambience, this eatery ticks all the right boxes. The restaurant makes for the ideal date night. It’s romantic and intimate but not too fancy-schmancy, plus the prices are astoundingly reasonable. We’re talking R59 for a Paneer Tikka starter-decadent marinated cottage cheese roasted in a clay oven- or R39 for an Onion Badjia starter -a deep fried crispy onion dumpling, mixed with potato, chickpea flour and herbs. It’s basically comfort food in one mouthful. As the aromas excude this gastronomic universe, you’ll be pleased to know the service is as outstanding as the meal. They deliver excellent attention to detail, which, of course, is essential to any restaurants success. We can all agree that good food isn’t the only ingredient to a splendid dining

experience, and what sets this restaurant apart is just that. With a menu that seems meticulously researched and offering a wide variety for all gastronomes, your biggest issue will be what to order. Using innovative combinations and flavours in every dish, the food is tasty and fresh. Although not always the most aesthetically pleasing or insta-worthy the flavour in each meal is quite literally rock ń roll on your taste buds. We tried the Chana Masala, a mouth-watering vegetarian dish consisting of chickpeas cooked in a creamy, velvety tomato gravy and the Aloo Gobi Matar prepared with potatoes, peas, cauliflower and a rich masala style gravy. Possibly the most integral part of any Indian meal is the sambals, their garlic naan is to die for and a side of the raita and a large bowl of fluffy white rice is essential. Yip, we’re salivating. Simply put HJ, this grub is good. So, before the season ends, go grab yourself a table. Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review…VAN DER LINDE

There’s a new restaurant on the block and it’s got locals, foodies and trend - seekers buzzing.

O

ne of the latest additions to the Linden food scene, Van der Linde restaurant offers patrons more than just your usual restaurant setting. The venue has 4 components; a bakery and deli, gin and juice bar, eatery and wine shop. Another quirky feature is the bonsai studio, visitors can, with a full tummy, learn how to clean, prune, wire and then style their very own bonsai. What does this have to do with food you may ask? When we figure out the answer to that question we’ll let you know. Although, it definitely serves as a drawcard for the hipster crowd that are a little more spiritually inclined, because that’s a thing nowadays. Upon entering the restaurant, you are met with beautiful décor that perfectly combines a European feel with traditional African elements in an Afro-fusion style that works effortlessly well. Every inch of the space is a perfect Instagram photo waiting to be posted from the freshly made fettuccini hanging in the kitchen to the contemporary art pieces adorning the wall. The atmosphere is inviting, to say the least. The menu was aligned perfectly with the impression that the décor and atmosphere provided. Minimalistic, stylish and with that unique flair that the restaurant portrayed so well. Every item on offer sounded absolutely scrumptious from the parmesan crusted chicken burger to the roasted beetroot flatbread and the fillet steak. The simplicity and attention to detail really was impressive. With all the incredible options to choose from, I settled for the roasted cauliflower and parmesan salad with sweet potato, butter beans and a chill, flat leaf parsley dressing. It was plated with style and was yum on so many levels. The food, décor and ambience were all on point, the service though… oh dear, it left something to be desired. It was achingly slow, which for the price point- similar to what you would pay at a fine dining restuarant in Sandton,- was unacceptable. All in all, it was a pleasant experience. P.S. Van der Linde will definitely need to iron out their service kinks before I return again in a hurry.

WILLOUGHBY & CO W

illoughby & Co, set in Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre on level two, is one of Johannesburg’s most loved seafood locations. Purveyors of fine seafood, owner Brett Whitehouse and his dynamic team are passionate about seafood and how it is served. Their restaurant showcases quality ingredients, natural flavours and humble yet elegant dishes. Their philosophy is simple, to use the best ingredients, cook simply and serve food in a relaxed, friendly environment. These days, most seafood is served with overpowering sauces and condiments, which tends to hide the authentic flavours of the fish. According to Brett Whitehouse, the preservation and preparation of fish is the key to genuine and fantastic tasting seafood. He says, “There is so much more to seafood than one realises. Seafood is very delicate and therefore should be treated with care. We want to change peoples’ perception of seafood and how it should be served. Therefore, education is vital. Seafood is an intricate art and we strive to showcase simple, genuine and authentic seafood dishes to our customers. There really is no need to ‘cover’ seafood with sauces and condiments if it has been prepared correctly. This applies to sushi as well. Sushi has become very westernised, with way too many sauces and toppings.” Most people are not aware that Johannesburg has some of the finest fish in the country. As seafood experts, we look after our fish. We source only the best. We get the fish whole and then fillet and prep them ourselves, get them on the grill, on the plate and then straight to you. Fish cannot be overcooked. Brett and his team have taken seafood back to old and traditional ways. Willoughby & Co also sells raw seafood directly to the customer. Our fishmonger and chefs are able to prepare the fish to your liking for easy convenience to cook at home. Willoughby & Co is a relaxed dining area suitable for all occasions. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The wonderful staff, who have been with Willoughby’s since the beginning, are the heartbeat and soul of the restaurant. Their hospitality and warmth will charm you and make you feel at home. Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre, William Nicol Dr, Hyde Park m 011 325 5107 1 www.willoughbyjoburg.com

THE RESTAURATEUR

Six years ago, a special space on Wits West Campus became available, and Olives & Plates was born. Andria and her team had secured the 380-seater space and were open for business, winning everyone over with her irresistible cake display.

Andria Neophytou - Olives & Plates

t’s impossible to imagine that Andria hasn’t always been in hospitality, even though her life has revolved around food. Growing up behind the grill in her parents’ Wimpy in Lydenburg, Andria pursued a career in IT Programming. It was only on her return to South Africa that she embraced her rich Greek heritage and began her love affair with food twenty-three years ago. Andria traded programming for her passion and together with her

A year ago, she was also offered an exclusive restaurant space at The Embassy which afforded her the opportunity to trade at night and offer her guests an unforgettable experience in Africa’s richest square mile. Everything that comes out of her kitchen is an experience, whether it’s a freshly cut fruit salad or life-changing ricotta hotcakes. Andria is serious about women empowerment and passionate about employing and empowering single mothers. As a mother herself, she understands the precariousness of balancing work and motherhood, and this is her way of giving back to the community. Inspired by the people who believe in her, Andria has come a long way from making milkshakes at Wimpy and has remained humble despite her inspiring success; but one thing hasn’t changed, she still makes the meanest toasted cheese.

husband and his family, as well as her sister, invested in a quaint coffee shop. What started out as a struggle, evolved into Andria serving passers-by flocking inside, and soon they had opened in Rustenburg, Boksburg and Fourways, each shop more successful than the last. As a business strategist, her husband came across an opportunity at Wits Medical Campus and was inspired by the possibility of putting an end to psychedelic pink Vienna’s and instead preparing fresh, wholesome food to fuel the doctors. Andria and her team soon moved into the JSE College and Business School. As Wits grew, so did their family business and soon they were feeding 7000 people daily.

IT'S WINE TIME Because it’s Women’s Month (like we need an excuse), us ladies at the office thought we’d celebrate with the much loved ‘wine o’clock’. We put together a list of our top picks and reviewed each bottle just for you! So, if a good bottle of vino is at the top of your to-do list, you’re welcome.

W

e visited the exclusive Signature Restaurant in Morningside Shopping Centre to nibble on a few delectable canapés (the steak and salmon tartar are nonnegotiable orders) and to taste their extensive wine selection. We also sat with their wine specialist to get the DL on everything you need to know about vino. TANNINS: Not 100% sure but as tannins is closely 1 www.signaturerestaurant.co.za linked to headaches, I am pleased to report that this wine left no bruises the following day.

Paul Sauer Kanonkop 2014

Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir Réserve Franschhoek 2014

AROMA: Berries for days but in particular blackberry. WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: This wine is the perfect companion in winter when your man lets you down. R&R will warm you from the inside out and banish all your woes. MOST DESIRABLE FOR: A bonfire or bubble bath. Tried and tested BEST PAIRED WITH: Definitely meat. Possibly ostrich with a mushroom or peppercorn sauce.

Rupert and Rothschild Classique 2015 Vintage

TANNINS: Complex and balanced. AROMA: Perfumed summer berries and a whiff of earthiness. WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: Everything. This is my new all-time favourite red Bordeaux blend (Cab Sav, Merlot and Cab Franc). Its sweet in all the right places, especially with the blackberry profile on the palate. It offers you that ‘opening a brand-new cigar box’ feeling and oozes well-roundedness and structure. MOST DESIRABLE FOR: It's the perfect date night spoil. BEST PAIRED WITH: Ostrich or oxtail.

32

Hello Joburg • August 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

TANNINS: The entry is dry with true varietal character. There are dark fruit flavours layered with juicy red fruit and soft tannins that are complemented by well-integrated acidity. AROMA: It smells like a bunch of freshly picked garden flowers, with subtle hints of cherry and strawberry. WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: It’s such an interesting wine to sip and swirl because it has white wine characters but behaves like a red wine. MOST DESIRABLE FOR: It’s of exceptional quality and should only be saved for special occasions. BEST PAIRED WITH: It pairs with anything from salmon to chicken and venison.

Paul Cluver Elgin Gewurztraminer 2016

AROMA: It’s the perfect balance of fresh and sweet with elegantly refined aromas of lime and delicate quince, as well as whiffs of warm butterscotch and almond.

Armilla - Avondale Wine 2010-7 stars TANNINS: Bitter and herbaceous. It leaves a lingering bitterness on the tongue but you’ll appreciate the biscuit flavours and relish in the fruity notes.

dining out

TANNINS: Think rich vanilla pod, peach kernel, vivacious pear and a hint of white pepper. After a few sips, you’ll start picking up hints of candyfloss, too.

AROMA: A strong green apple and subtle guava scent. WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: This MCC has a sweet entry and is light making it an easy drink. Who doesn’t love a glass of bubbles?

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: This wine tastes like summer in a bottle! You’ll want to drink it anytime you need a pick-me-up so make sure you always have a bottle in your fridge.

MOST DESIRABLE FOR: Perfect as a welcome drink.

MOST DESIRABLE FOR: It’s ideal for a special occasion but because it’s also so well balanced, it’s suitable for casual everyday drinking too.

BEST PAIRED WITH: Salmon

BEST PAIRED WITH: Creamy mussels in a white wine sauce, saffron risotto or seafood pasta.

Armilla - Avondale Armilla Paarl 2010

Creation Chardonnay (Hemel-en-Aarde( 2016

TANNINS: As the name suggests, Gewurztraminer which means spicy in German describes the flavour of this wine. It makes your mouth and lips tingle slightly.

Words Bianca Spinner; Candice May; Carly Ritz Image Designtube

AROMA: Apparently fruit. I tried very hard to taste it, I really did. But computer said no. WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT IT: Because of the wine’s acidity, it lasts significantly longer than most white wines. MOST DESIRABLE FOR: This one’s great every few weeks when your traditional poison starts to taste like its killing you slowly. BEST PAIRED WITH: A home-made chicken or prawn curry.

MUST-TRY COCKTAIL We spoke to Emilia Knight of @appetiteknight for her go-to VerGin Cocktails Recipes.

OF THE MONTH VerGin

Produced by Vermont Gin,VerGin is South Africa’s first distilled, non-alcoholic, organic botanical spirit. It looks like a gin. It is served like a gin. It makes the perfect “G&T” ...without any naughty additives, artificial sweeteners, colours or flavours and the best part? Its 0% sugar and 0% alcohol. Flavours: VerGin has two products on the market at present. ❶ Bloom Bloom is named after its beautiful rose-scented floral flavour profile. The lingering spiciness can be attributed to the addition of more exotic seeds, spices, barks and petals with a burst of freshness from lemon peel. This refined and complex blend of distilled organic botanicals glows with a pretty Hibiscus blush and includes just the right amount of Juniper berries to give it a real “gin kick”. ❷ Limón Limón has a vibrant green citrus flavour profile with abundant lemon and lime notes. Distilled together with hand-harvested organic botanicals and exotic roots, bark, seeds and spices underpinned by Juniper that gives it a soft spicy edge and a distinctly gin-like complexity. This is pure lemon and lime bliss!

➌ Cool fact: Why is it called VerGin? The VER was derived from Vermont, the Hermanus suburb where the founders of the Vermont Gin Company met as neighbours. It also plays on the pure, clean, virginal attributes of this non-alcoholic distilled spirit and the Juniper base provides the “GIN” reference...so in essence, it is a “virgin” “gin” from Vermont. ➍ Try one: You shouldn’t have to throw five other things in a glass to make gin more palatable... VerGin is good enough to sip on its own, but if you love creating unique cocktails be assured that it will elevate those to a completely different level. Give our must-try VerGin cocktail a go and see for yourself!

Why HJ Loves: VerGin makes the perfect non-alcoholic G&T but Mixologists can also create exciting new cocktails around it that gives patrons who are not drinking alcohol, for whatever reason, a great, complex, real adult alternative to the usual blend of sugary syrups and fruit juices. VerGin Bloom is poised to disrupt the way consumers think about adult nonalcoholic beverages. It is premium quality and tastes as close to the real thing as you will get.

Words Candice May Images Supplied

Evita TAKES US ON AN ARTS & CULTURE TOUR Evita Bezuidenhout, the alter ego of comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys, is still the most famous white woman in South Africa. Now a member of the ANC, she spends her free time in the Luthuli House kitchen, cooking for reconciliation and making sure that democracy doesn’t become the victim of third-rate people’s fourthrate politics. We caught up with her about her top experiences to immerse you in the arts and culture of Jozi.

restaurants to choose from, offering tantalising meals like all-African oxtail potjie and spicy Indian curry.

Apartheid Museum

Johannesburg Zoo

The first on Evita’s top activities list is to visit to the Apartheid Museum at the Gold Reef City campus in downtown Joburg. A journey through its corridors illustrates what life was like for South Africans under the apartheid system through democratic photographs, videos, press clips, personal artefacts and moving anecdotes. It also brings life to the effect of the laws, horrors and eventual demise of the apartheid system. Evita will be the first to explain to you that not all Afrikaaners supported apartheid and that she has always been very respectful to her black staff, her affectionately known ‘Kitchen Comrades’. Afterwards, Evita suggests popping into one of the restaurants at Gold Reef City for a delicious, filling lunch in a calm setting – the perfect way to end the experience. There is a range of

The Johannesburg Zoo in Parkview has a special place in Evita’s heart. She can still remember how African animals were locked up in small cages, deprived of sufficient privacy and space to exercise. But then, with the freedom of Nelson Mandela, Evita was determined that no life should be subjected to cruelty and discomfort again, and so the cages at the Johannesburg Zoo were replaced by enclosed strolling areas and lavish spaces for roaming, cavorting and fun. To her, this also reflected the freedom of movement in South Africa.

Market Theatre Evita is excited to see the development around the legendary Market Theatre in the vibrant inner-city suburb of Newtown, which was opened in 1976 as an independent, non-racial theatre during the apartheid regime. She’s always insisted that restaurants, hotels and supermarkets are brought closer to this international bastion of free speech and theatrical innovation. Evita personally wouldn’t visit the Market Theatre before 1994, but that wasn’t because she was politically incompatible with the shows that were on at the theatre. Rather, it was because she was afraid that her car would be stolen if she parked outside!

Constitutional Hill Evita goes to Constitutional Hill in Braamfontein to explore the unique art exhibition, which is housed in the same building as the Constitutional Court.

She never knew that South Africa had so many wonderful painters, sculptors, drawers, sketchers and other eccentric artists whose work could now only inspire the projectors of free speech, free association and democratic actions in their courtrooms of justice and law.

Johannesburg Art Gallery Evita hasn’t been to the Johannesburg Art Gallery in Joubert Park for health and safety reasons, but she highly recommends a visit to anyone who loves art. She explains that like in any other great, cultured city, the best art in Joburg is usually behind locked doors, protected by cameras, barbed wire and guard dogs. If the Voortrekker Monument was closer to Egoli, Evita would also recommend that art enthusiasts go there, but art in earshot of service delivery protests will always be her definite second choice. QUICK FACTS ABOUT EVITA • Evita’s favourite place to enjoy a traditional South African meal is in her own home in Darling, where she celebrates the best of local cuisine. Bobotie is always on top of her menu, finished off with koeksisters and a Darling sweet toffee. • Evita used to frequent the Johannesburg Civic Theatre, which is now Joburg Theatre. She still goes there often as she loves the buzz and clutter of Braamfontein, and the theatre’s challenging choice of entertainment, from glittering musicals, to pantomimes in eleven official languages, to obscure intellectual local dramas.

OUR TOP PICK: Cloud Nine- Club Med-La Plantation d’Albion, Mauritius 1 www.clubmed.co.za If you have a hankering for wanderlust, we have just the location.

We were recently invited to the luxurious Club Med Albion resort for a week and found out exactly how to maximize our time in this tropical paradise. This 21-hectare resort consists of vast white coral sands as well as cascading palm trees and is an all-inclusive luxury. You’ll be dazzled upon arrival and greeted with a space that’s furnished with treasures boasting a traditional Creole look and feel. This resort is an intermingling of authentic charm and contemporary elegance. Oh, and did we mention its all-inclusive?

In this archipelago lies a pristine slice of heaven. This is the ultimate island destination that flaunts untamed beauty from every angle. You’ll explore a land of raging sunsets on a voyage along the Indian Ocean. This Mauritian Creole conversing island is on everyone’s bucket list. and land activities, accommodation, staff tips and most importantly all drinks are included in the price. The only thing you’ll pay extra for is a golf excursion if you want to get rid of your spouse for a few hours, oh and your hedonistic experience at the exclusive Club Med Spa by CINQ MONDES Paris, which is begging to be enjoyed. They even offer transfers to a professional 18-hole golf course, just one-hour away from the resort. It’s a no-brainer. And remember at the end of your stay once you check out, there will be no extra costs. You’ll soon realise you would have paid a great deal more for this all-inclusive trip, so it’s easy to see the value. Another great advantage is that South Africans won’t

be affected by the fluctuating randdollar exchange with no extras and no hidden costs. So now that we’ve convinced you, allow us to emphasize some of our highlights. Mauritius has panache and so does its people. Don’t worry about milling around with the masses because the resort has two separate experiences. On the one side is the kids club, The Distillerie Restaurant buffet and a kid friendly pool and beach with an abundance of water sports and activities. Across the landscaped vistas, perched above the ocean, overlooking an expansive Mauritian mural is the Zen Zone. Zero wailing broods, no repetitive questions and no sticky limbs. Rather there is the Phare, a fine dining restaurant

travel Club Med-La Plantation d’Albion that’s overlooking the ocean, as well as the Club Med Spa. So, whether you’re lusting after a romantic getaway for two or a family vacation, they’ve got it pegged. The gastronomic experience is bountiful and changes on a daily basis. Expect cuisine from all over the world created with style and flair. Succulent, melt in the mouth emperor fish dishes, Creole curries showcasing local ingredients, the juiciest coconut and the freshest seafood and impressive pizzas too. Before dinner do opt for a sundowner at one of the three spectacular bar areas. We loved the beach bar and the impressive Banian bar, which serves bubbles from 6 pm! Be whisked off … another world awaits…

A ROYAL RETREAT

IN PLETTENBERG BAY If the walls of this homestead that dates back to 1885 could talk, you’d never get to sleep – you’d be too enthralled by the rich history and old-world opulence that surrounds you. As much as we love gawking at Joburg’s ultramodern boutique hotels and dazzling luxury properties, sometimes we just want to escape the concrete jungle for a minute and stay in a storied residence with a historic restaurant to match. After a weekend stay at Kurland Hotel in Plettenberg Bay, we can safely say that this unhurried, unassuming jewel is just the place.

W

hile there are many amazing things to do and see in the City of Gold, sometimes our flooded metropolis can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling restless and in need of a city break. Can you relate? We thought so! That’s why we’re excited to share our discovery of a luxe hotel that turns out to be a crowned gem along the Garden Route with you. But before we get started, allow us to clear something up... Of all the places along the Garden Route, Plettenberg Bay has a reputation as the land reserved for the rich and pretentious – but

this doesn’t mean that the ritzy town is all about popped-collars and fancy cars. Otherwise Plett, as its widely known, wouldn’t also be home to Kurland Hotel, a five-star property that marries old-school elegance with modern sophistication. Offering the best of both worlds – the tranquil countryside and breath-taking beaches – it’s the perfect place for an exclusive hideaway. We arrived at Kurland Hotel on a Friday afternoon after a short two-hour flight from Johannesburg to Geroge followed by a one-anda-half-hour drive (the drive is so scenic that it flies by – you’ll actually wish it was longer!) to the hotel. The warm and welcoming general manager, Diana, was waiting outside for us and quickly organised for the concierge to take our luggage from the car to our suite, nestled on the property’s fragrant rose garden. Upon stepping into the elegant and expansive two-bedroom, two-bathroom, suite, we were instantly taken aback. While each one of the 12 suites on the 700-hectare private estate have been individually appointed and tastefully decorated, the Rose Garden 1 abode is a showstopper of note. Dressed in neutral colour palettes and immaculate upholstery, it boasts vaulted ceilings, a wooden bookshelf chockfull of old books, an open wood-burning fireplace and chandeliers dripping with lamps.

travel

The old-school influence is reflected in the Egyptian cotton bedspreads and well-worn vintage furniture like velvet club chairs, which is complemented by modern palate-pleasing pieces of furniture and contemporary art. The lavish vibe extends to the sumptuous main bathroom, which has an extra-long bathtub, fluffy bathrobes and is generously stocked with bath products. Other features of the suite include a mini bar, ceiling fans, heated towel rails, a flat-screen TV and free WiFi. From the private patio, you can take in mesmerising views of the surrounding mountains – all while being afforded utter privacy. You’ll completely forget that you’re just a short drive away from the busy beach resorts of Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley.

After unpacking our bags, we headed to the sunny patio that overlooks the sparkling swimming pool at the hotel’s restaurant to enjoy a welcome drink. Whatever your drink of choice is – a refreshing gin and tonic, a whiskey on the rocks or a glass of bubbly – the fully-stocked bar has got you. Just before sunset, we took a stroll around the property to explore the flora and fauna on the estate and were quite amazed by all of the indigenous plants, shrubs and trees that are found in the area. Then back to the restaurant it was to tuck into a three-course dinner. The award-winning Kurland Restaurant serves candlelit seclusion and a straightforward yet decadent menu at dinnertime – think dishes like a twice-baked cheese soufflé, mint green pea and lamb risotto, and baked dark chocolate fondant. Each plate reflects an emphasis on fresh, organic herbs and vegetables grown on the property. The wine list is just as impressive, offering a wide variety of local and imported bottles. What’s more, the service was simply faultless – highly attentive without being obtrusive. After wining and dining at Kurland Restaurant, it was easy to understand why it routinely makes lists of the most romantic restaurants not only on the Garden Route but in the country. After a good night’s sleep, we were ready for a full day of R&R. Inbetween a dreamy champagne brunch and cosy afternoon tea at Kurland Restaurant, we enjoyed the estate at our leisure. There’s so much to

do, from activities like horse riding and quad biking to pampering yourself in the recently renovated spa that has a steam room, sauna, therapy rooms and a gym.

If you’re really looking to unwind, feel free to just spend your time soaking up some sun at the pool or curled up with a good book in front of the fire in the lounge instead. It’s all up to you – and the staff won’t judge. In fact, the best thing about Kurland Hotel is that time is of no consequence, so guests set their own pace and the staff make sure that they’re comfortable and relaxed from check-in to check-out. Our Saturday ended with another top-notch dinner at Kurland Restaurant. Before checking out on Sunday morning, we decided to indulge in one last meal – but this time from the comfort of our room. At Kurland Hotel, you can choose to have any meal of the day delivered by the restaurant right to your doorstep if you don’t feel like dressing up and going out. We figured there’d be no better way to end the weekend than with a breakfast of foamy cappuccinos, freshly baked croissants and the most moreish eggs benedict ever in bed – and, boy, were we right. What a treat! N2, Kurland, The Crags, Plettenberg Bay

How do you juggle being a mom and a successful businesswoman? Time management and organizational skills help but so do a supportive husband, family and friends. I am fortunate that my job is flexible so I can time my styling shoots to fit in with my family commitments. One piece of career advice you would give to young girls? Do your best to get a proper qualification because this will give you the confidence and self-assurance in whatever career path you follow. Network and make strong connections. What would your perfect room look like? Much like my wardrobe, my home is an extension of who I am. My perfect room would reflect my personality and style and be friendly, chic and modern. I would say I am calm and balanced, so the palette would be simple, natural colours tones with lots of layering and textures.

Are you a morning or evening person? I am a morning person. My energy levels are far higher when I wake up early and I am far more productive in the mornings.

Who is your role model? It might sound cliché, but my mom is my role model. She is such a lady and I don’t think I have ever seen her ungroomed and without lipstick. She has taught me how to live with integrity, optimism, hope, determination and compassion.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue? I would love to be a pilot and fly an aeroplane. As an air hostess, I always wanted to fly a jumbo and not work in the back of the plane.

What would you rate 10 / 10? I would have to say FROZEN FOR YOU’S delicious and convenient meals. When I’m feeling frantic I order yummy meals online. 1 www.frozenforyou.co.za
