Think casual, think modish, and think current. The owners realized their career direction was towards creating outstanding pizzas in a beautiful, comfortable environment. Many modern restaurants seem to have lost the true essence of cooking, of sticking to the good old basics. It doesn’t get more basic than pizza, however made with passion, knowledge and bold flavors; these aren’t just your average pizzas. itar is a fine dining Indian Restaurant located in Cresta Shopping Mall. To call Sitar just a restaurant is not fair at all, it is an experience, a truly authentic, elaborate Indian experience. Sitar offers an extensive, sumptuous menu. Some of our favorites are the Spinach pakora; the Samoosas and the tandoori prawns, while the The Butter Chicken and the Chicken Vindaloo are delectable! “Food is an important part of Indian culture, playing a role in everyday life as well as in festivals. In many families, everyday meals are usually sit-down affairs consisting of two to three main course dishes, varied accompaniments such as chutneys and pickles, rice and roti (bread), as well as desserts. Our food has its origin from North or South India.” Thus the food and menu is prepared with passion and love. The menu offers a variety of some of Indian cuisines ultimate dishes. The Fish Curry and Fish Madras are divine seafood dishes, The Rogan Josh and Lamb Pasanda are delicious lamb dishes, The Chicken Biryani and Chicken Tandoori are yummy poultry dishes and finally The Dhal Makhni and the Mattar Mushroom are vegetarian favorites. The butter naan is the grand finale and just adds that extra oomph to the meal.

A: The variety and combination of spices specific to each and every dish, makes every meal unique. All meals are deliciously spiced but not necessarily hot. You can chose mild, medium or hot, as each meal is individually prepared at Sitar. Hospitality and serving others are part of our heritage. Humility and treating others more importantly than us is key.

REFRESHING SUMMER COCKTAIL WITH SEDGWICK’S ORIGINAL OLD BROWN

W

hile the meat sizzles on the braai and you soak up the sun with your friends, create a refreshing cocktail with no-other than Sedgwick’s Original Old Brown, winner of the Best Value Award in the fortified wine category at the 2013 Best Value Awards. No point in keeping your favourite Sedgwick’s Original Old Brown hidden during the summer months – let it share the warmth of summer with you. “Obies”, as it is affectionately known, has been part of many moments, across generations. It’s such a versatile fortified wine and its slightly sweet and rich taste calls for new memories to be made. The Sedgwick’s Lane cocktail is a twist on the vintage Sherry Cobbler, the most popular drink served in the UK and USA in the 1800s. Hailed as “the greatest liquorary invention of the day” in 1830, it’s a great way to enjoy the summer! The name of the cocktail refers to the street where Captain James Sedgwick’s opened his first liquor store in 1853 and which for years was known as Sedgwick Lane. The recipe below is for one glass but can equally be doubled-up and made in a jug.

SEDGWICK’S LANE Ingredients 50 ml Sedgwick’s Original Old Brown 30 ml orange juice 50ml cranberry juice 2 dashes of Bitters Method Simply combine all the ingredients in a shaker and strain over ice. Bleed some grenadine syrup in and serve with a couple of strawberries and orange slices. Sedgwick’s Original Old Brown is one of South Africa’s oldest wine brands and although first produced in the late 1800s, was only launched in 1916. It is named after Captain James Sedgwick, a frequent visitor to the Cape of Good Hope, who made the Cape his home in 1853. He opened a tavern, the Captain’s Rooms which led him to establish J. Sedgwick and Co, a company trading in liquor products, including fortified wines, as well as cigars and tobacco. After his death his sons took over the business and as part of their rapid expansion, created new products and one of their fortified wines they called Old Brown Sherry. And so one of South Africa’s most iconic brands was born.

going forward as a shining example of the contribution the arts can make to communities.”

or the first time in over half a century, Johannesburg has a professional ballet company carrying the City’s name. The opening night of the current ballet season at the Joburg Theatre on Friday 13 September was the occasion of the renaming of South African Mzansi Ballet to the new name of Joburg Ballet.

The City of Johannesburg has had an ongoing relationship with the ballet company since April 2004 when the company, then The South African Ballet Theatre, moved from Pretoria to Johannesburg and the then Johannesburg Civic Theatre.

Earlier this year, the City of Johannesburg announced a grant of R8-million to the ballet company to be given for an initial year of funding with an indicative allocation for a three year period, signaling the City’s intention to support the company on an ongoing basis.

The company moved into purpose built, state-of-the-art premises comprising studios and office space funded by the theatre’s corporate neighbours, SAPPI and the City of Johannesburg. The project was initiated and championed by the theatre’s Chief Executive Officer, Bernard Jay.

One of the pre-requisites of the funding grant was that the ballet company’s name be changed to Joburg Ballet, highlighting and emphasizing the partnership between the City and the ballet company. The last professional ballet company to carry the name of the City was the Johannesburg City Ballet, forerunner to PACT Ballet, in the early 1960s.

Subsequently, the City of Johannesburg has benefitted from its relationship with the ballet company which has showcased the city provincially, nationally and internationally over the past decade. The funding as well as the company’s name change to Joburg Ballet will enhance the company’s capacity to showcase and represent the City into the future.

The financial boost to the ballet company was made possible by the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr. Parks Tau and Member of the Mayoral Committee: Community Development, Cllr. Chris Vondo. The Executive Mayor said: “I’m delighted to be able to bring Joburg’s support to this company

Also during the current ballet season, Joburg Ballet welcomed Mrs. Carolyn Steyn as a new Patron. In this capacity Mrs. Steyn joins Mrs. Mary Slack and Mr. Tito T. Mboweni who have lent their distinguished names as Patrons of the ballet company for several years. www.joburgtheatre.com

THE STORIES BEHIND THE STORIES ABOUT THE BOOK

W

e have a remarkable team. Together they have won 162 awards, influenced government, changed laws andsparked popular debate. In a fight, these are the people I would want to have on my side” - George Mazarakis Carte Blanche burst onto the scene in 1988 as a genre never before seen on South African television: a trailblazer, a blend of sociological awareness, sophistication and audacity. When pay channel M-Net came up with this different and daring weekly eye-opener that pushed the envelope, it brought promise of freedom and creativity and ended a period in our history in which television news and current affairs were stifled and limited to the state broadcaster.

- J.F SPINNER

CLICHÉS

Twenty-five years on, the familiar Carte Blanche melody has become an institution, announcing the end of the weekend and the start of an hour that resists the mundane and stimulates debate.

Carte Blanche: The Stories Behind the Stories dips into an era of quality journalism through the eyes of the producers and presenters who have so effectively measured the national mood and recognised defining moments. It recalls the host of unforgettable characters the show has brought to our screens, from the transsexuals of Beaufort West and the controversial directors of Aurora to the predators who lurk on dating websites and some of rugby’s bestknown rogues. It’s an unabashed look at what goes on behind the scenes of the nation’s longest-running current affairs show and reveals some of the passionate and colourful characters involved in its production over the past quarter of a century. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Originally from the Eastern Cape, Jessica Pitchford has been a journalist in Johannesburg since graduating from Rhodes University in the eighties. Her position as managing-editor at Carte Blanche is a departure from a long career in reporting and producing for SABC news and current affairs.

J

ulius Schultz has been described as a versatile musician who is continually expanding the scope of his activities in addition to countless musical projects. And true to this description, Schultz’ new album, “Colour Blind”, continues to solidify his reputation as a jazz musician of international quality. The Joburg-born guitarist started playing at the tender age of 12, and his love for his instrument grew every day until it eventually blossomed into the exquisite skill and effortless showmanship we know today. Schultz has recorded three albums: Expression, Replay and An African Christmas. He also has a DVD that was recorded at the Blues Room in Sandton. With his latest offering, Colour Blind, Schultz transports listeners to a plane of smooth jazz with a hint of R & B that leaves them breathless. The album is released in beautiful packaging with a bonus DVD with Julius Schultz performing live with several guest musicians. What is also remarkable is that Schultz’ musical genius has been genetically passed down to his children, his 10-year old daughter, Jamie-Leigh

and 6 year-old son, Justin-Lee, who accompany Schultz on the album on the title track and at live performances all over the country as The Justin Leigh Band. Both kids are musical prodigies – playing at professional level; Jamie-Leigh is an accomplished drummer and Justin-Lee plays the keyboard. Schultz thanks his children in a touching letter on the liner-notes of Colour Blind – and what becomes evident is that apart from being a prolific musician, Schultz is also a caring, nurturing father. “This album was a joy to make, and what made it even better is that I could share this experience with my wonderful children and with the support of my amazing family,” Schultz says. Universal Music is equally excited about working with this gifted artist. “Julius is a standout-performer and this album is sure to exceed expectations and garner critical acclaim from all over – we are proud to have him with us,” says Wandile Sikhosana from Universal Music South Africa. Julius Schultz’ Colour Blind is currently on shelves in all good music stores. For more information on Julius Schultz, please visit www.juliusschultz.com

LONG WALK TO FREEDOM Ster-Kinekor And The Zone Host Sa Premiere Of “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom”

Z

ane The red carpet dazzled with stars last night (03 November), as South Africa’s glitterati came out to welcome home, and pay tribute to, the high-profile cast and crew of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. It was only fitting that the premiere for a film that honours one of the world’s global icons, who came from humble beginnings in the Eastern Cape, should be celebrated on home soil.

“WELCOME HOME, AND PAY TRIBUTE TO, THE HIGH-PROFILE CAST AND CREW OF MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM.” The star-studded premiere, which was attended by the two international stars of the film, Idris Elba and Naomie Harris (who play the roles of Nelson and Winnie Mandela respectively), was hosted by Ster-Kinekor Theatres and The Zone in Rosebank. The entire cinema complex, and large sections of The Zone shopping centre, were cordoned off to accommodate the function and to ensure a high level of security for the actors

and VIP guests. Says Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of SterKinekor Theatres: “Ster-Kinekor is extremely proud to be associated with the premiere of the much-anticipated film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. We are aware of the growing excitement and talkability that is building around the film’s impending international release. As such, we are delighted to co-host this prestigious event for a film that honours a true global icon revered the world over.

“TWO INTERNATIONAL STARS OF THE FILM, IDRIS ELBA AND NAOMIE HARRIS” “We continue to experience a growing interest in South Africanproduced films among our cinema goers. As the country’s leading exhibitor, we are aware of what our audiences want to see on the big screen and take pride in supporting local content that resonates with them. South African film makers continue to find unique stories to make into films that have a wide appeal – we know this film will resonate with all South Africans, and is a product of which we should all be extremely proud.

“WERE CORDONED OFF TO ACCOMMODATE THE FUNCTION AND TO ENSURE A HIGH LEVEL OF SECURITY FOR THE ACTORS AND VIP GUESTS.” “Considering the international acclaim that this film has already garnered at events such as the recent Toronto Film Festival, we are confident that its release to South African audiences will be one of, if not the highlight on the local film circuit this year. Our congratulations go out to another South African of whom we are extremely proud, producer Anant Singh, and the entire cast and crew involved in the production of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. It is a fitting tribute to our beloved ‘Madiba’ and former South African President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela,” commented Mahomed. Co-hosting the event with SterKinekor was another Primedia subsidiary, Primedia Lifestyle Marketing Services. Doug Mayne, Group MD, was impressed with the manner in which the teams pulled together to

ensure a successful event. “We were honoured to host this prestigious premiere at The Zone. The team worked tirelessly to produce a worldclass function, befitting of the great man whose life is celebrated in the film. I would like to thank SterKinekor Theatres, the producers and Videovision Entertainment, and the Primedia Lifestyle team for turning this event into a reality – and an enormous success,” stated Mayne.

“WE KNOW THIS FILM WILL RESONATE WITH ALL SOUTH AFRICANS, AND IS A PRODUCT OF WHICH WE SHOULD ALL BE EXTREMELY PROUD.” Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom releases at all Ster-Kinekor cinemas countrywide on Friday, 29 November. KIA MOTORS SOUTH AFRICA LAUNCHES NEW CERATO 5-DOOR HATCHBACK

A

fter the launch of the new Cerato sedan model in May 2013, Kia Motors South Africa (KMSA) has maintained its share and presence in the highly competitive C-segment in the local automotive industry. Initially showcased at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show earlier this year, the all all-new Cerato 5-door hatchback impressed with its eye-catching and sporty design, quality finishes and surprising interior space and comfort levels, similar to those found on its sibling sedan model. “We received very positive feedback after the all-new Cerato sedan made its debut in South Africa back in May, and we expect the all-new Cerato 5-door will build upon that success,” said David Sieff, Marketing Director of KMSA . “The combination of a practical hatchback for carrying cargo and the sporty touches throughout the car make the all-new Cerato 5-door a dual threat in the segment.” Stunning European design language Born from the Kia design studio in Seoul and overseen by Kia’s global chief of design, Peter Schreyer, the Cerato 5-door’s sophisticated hatchback profile, large wheels and aggressive posture give it a distinctly European appearance that speaks to its sporty intentions. Its chiseled body commands attention and continues Kia’s tradition as a design leader in the industry. The Cerato 5-door boasts an aggressive front fascia with larger bumper and grille openings, black gloss grille inserts, large front brakes, alloy sport pedals as well as front and rear seats with carbon fiber-style accents. Like its Cerato sedan counterpart, the Cerato 5-door’s swept headlights stretch deep into the front fenders and the raked windshield and broad shoulders give the front end a sleek, athletic appearance. LED positioning lights add a premium look to

36

the front fascia. Moving around the vehicle, the large 17-inch wheels fill the wheel wells on the SX, and the hatchback profile affords a performance-oriented sporty personality. Around the rear, the boot opens to reveal 385 litres of usable cargo space. LED tail lights complete the premium feel of the exterior and a sporty rear valance with twin chrome exhaust tips maintains the Cerato 5-door’s edgy demeanor. Sporty cabin with premium features Inside, the Cerato 5-door features premium materials and soft touch points. Large, easy-to-read whiteon-black gauges nestle deeply into the instrument cluster. Chrome accents around the HVAC controls and carbon fiber-like textures on the dash and seats, add a sporty touch. A grippy leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob are further evidence of the Cerato 5-door’s sporty attitude. Features such as the new large 4.3” TFT LCD centre facia, a smart welcome home lighting system and the new Flexsteer™ system sets the Cerato 5-door apart from its competition. The all-new Cerato will be offered in 3 different equipment levels across two engines – the 1.6 EX, 2.0 EX and 2.0 SX will offer customers Kia’s long list of premium amenities and features not normally found in the compact segment.

Hello Johannesburg December 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

Powertrains and transmissions Under the hood, the Cerato 5-door packs a punch, with the 1.6-liter in-line four-cylinder Gamma engine putting out a healthy 95.3 kilowatts at 6300 rpm and 157 of torque at 4850 rpm through a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The higher specced 2.0 model comes standard with the highly competitive 2.0-liter in- line four-cylinder Nu engine, producing 118 kW at 6500 rpm and 194.2 Nm of torque at 4800 rpm. This model will also be available in both manual and automatic transmissions. Standard features and technology offers value to new levels of sophistication Continuing Kia’s reputation of offering tremendous value, the all-new Cerato 5-door offers buyers an impressive allotment of technology and safety features. The 1.6 EX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic light control, Bluetooth, cruise control, electric windows and side mirrors, LED daytime running lights, a radio with MP3, iPod and USB compatibility, rear air-vents, six speakers and steering wheel mounted controls. The 2.0 EX trim further features a Flexsteer system, leather seats and

an optional sunroof. The 2.0 SX ups the ante with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear park distance control, LED tail-lights, a smart welcome home system, a smart key with a stop/start button, a rear view camera and Xenon headlamps. State-of-the-art safety features Safety technologies standard on all models include ABS (Anti–lock Braking System) with built-in EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), active headrests, impact sensing auto door unlock, a passenger airbag on/ off switch, six airbags consisting of driver, front passenger, side and curtain airbags, Isofix child seat anchors and fog lights. The SX model features ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hillstart Assist Control), which prevents slip-back during stop-start driving on inclines, and a VSM (Vehicle Stability Management) system that works with the ESC to provide ‘corrective’ steering inputs to help the driver avoid loss of control, especially on asymmetric (wet and dry) road surfaces. The Cerato range comes standard with a 5-year /150 000km warranty, 5-year/90 000km service plan and a 3-year/unlimited km roadside assistance plan.
