People of Joburg!

The Jo'burg Foodie

What are you crushing on at the moment? Restaurant Mosaic! Chef Chantel won Chef of The Year and her food looks exquisite! What is your favourite foodie find in the city? That's such a tough question - Jo'burg is such an exciting city and I'm always finding new spots, so the answer often changes. The Great Eastern Food Bar is one of my most memorable finds as it was one of the catalysts for my blogging - their beautifully presented food and exciting new flavours just had to be shared. This weeks favourites would have to be Bean There on Smit Street for superb coffee & the wine and tapas bar Escondido. It's impossible to pick just one! What did you have for lunch today? Sushi - handrolls, nigiri and a few salmon roses. Sometimes there's nothing better than a good plate of sushi! What makes Joburg shine for you? I love the diversity of the city, not only of the people but of the different areas and how they're transforming. There's something for everyone and you can go from one place to the next and experience completely different cultures, cuisines and atmospheres - all within a few blocks of one

another. The city has this amazing energy, it's fast paced and constantly evolving, there's always an adventure to be had and hidden gems to be discovered.

Who has inspired your love of food? Without a doubt that would have to be my mother. Aside from the fact that she's a fantastic cook herself and is always creating fantastic dishes, from a young age she would always encourage me to try new things. Thanks to her I've been fortunate enough to have experienced a wide range of different foods, flavours and restaurants. Instagram or Facebook? Instagram, obviously!

All Directions

Ballet and dance enthusiasts will be delighted to watch a cast of 100 dancers whilst they listen to a 70-strong orchestra performing an exciting new version of Spartacus, last produced in South Africa in the 1980s. Spartacus, the tale of a Thracian gladiator who led a major slave uprising against the Roman Empire in 73BC, mirrors the oppression that various African countries have fought to overcome, and presents an excellent opportunity for a large cast of classical ballet and contemporary dancers to give the story 21st century relevance.

All Directions is a tribute to the music of the British pop boy band, One Direction. Also on the bill are artists who share the airwaves, charts and award winning nominations with the group. Listen out for Pharrel Williams, Robin Thicke - Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Avicci, Taylor Swift and many more. All Directions features a 12- piece cast with Barnyard musicians, singers and dancers that pay tribute to the One Direction songs One Thing, Live While We’re Young, Best Song Ever, Story of my Life, Steal my Girl and many more.

Venue: Barnyard Theatres, Emperors Palace, Kempton Park Dates: 1 to 16 June Ticket Prices: R100 from the Barnyard Theatre website or at the door. Contact: www.barnyardtheatre.co.za or 011 823 6933

The Grand White Dinner Jozi

8

As a self-respecting foodie, I braved the pre-Winter weather, donned my whites – with a touch of green - and headed to the secret venue: Waterfall Polo Estates for the much-anticipated Johannesburg leg of The Grand White Dinner. From the moment I sashayed through the gates I could sense the excitement from the crowd. With close to 6,500 trendy picnickers dressed to theme, I knew I was in for a chill-melting treat. Rows upon rows of white tables were decked out to the nines: gorgeous table centerpieces, charming china and statement cutlery. The entertainment was top-notch – how could it not be with fabulous funny-man Marc Lottering as emcee. The music didn’t disappoint either – thanks to the serenading sounds of Deejay Didier who was accompanied by crowd-favourites, Acoustic Element. Need it be mentioned that muso Lisa Goldin was simply golden?! @GlamFoodieZA Hello Joburg • June 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

If you’d like to opt for more formal Winter wear, ensure that you incorporate a timeless classic tweed jacket. Add a lightweight scarf for some extra panache to bring this country look into the city.

OVER THE TOP FATHER’S DAY PRESENTS

I

nstead of buying dad another pair of socks this month, why not go all out and spoil him with some of the greatest tech gifts on the market right now? Thought we were all Avengered out after last month? Never! Imagine dad’s surprise when you wake him up and present him with this life size replica of the Hulk Buster suit. Costing a cool R300 000 the statue (yup, you can’t get inside) stands at 300cm. So the perfect lounge decoration if you spoil dad with our next techie dream gift – a fully automated home cinema. With smartphones acting as remotes and tablets controlling your curtains, we’re all living in automated homes… but imagine a fully automated home cinema with voice activated temperature controls and a full cinematic experience? While I’m not sure how you would hide the construction from dad before Father’s Day I do know he won’t be sorry when you fire up Top Gun on your new fancy projector system. If your heart is set on this gift idea BNC Technology (www.bnctechnology.co.za) offers some rather swanky home automation to work within your budget. If you really want to spoil dad though the recently announced Tesla home battery might go down a treat. The 10kWh home battery system will ensure he never has to curse about load shedding again. While it might set you back R49 000 imagine never stressing about the lights going off ? If you need a bit more time to save for these techie pressies never fear, this issue has a full list of great Fathers Day gift ideas and there are a few gadget gifts he’ll love! H Tech Girl Sam Wright spends her time scouring the interwebs for a host of different women – moms, fashionistas, foodies, hipsters and geared up geeks – to share their tech stories with you. Her site “techgirl.co.za” is filled with reviews, how to’s and general interest stories that simplify the specs and give you the information you want.

dining out The Rabbit will put a spell on your stomach The folklore goes that there is a rabbit that lives on the moon. Like the concept of pareidolia, that lets you see faces and shapes in the clouds, people in East Asia believe there is an outline of a rabbit carved on the surface of the moon who is in fact pounding ingredients in a mortar and a pestle to prepare food.

B

elieve it or not, the rabbit anecdote really is the perfect name for the eclectic and cosy restaurant that has a prime spot in Illovo and serves up a storm. With the perfect indoor-outdoor setup for any time of the day, rain or shine, Rabbit in the Moon holds true to the old adage that it doesn’t matter about the weather as long as we’re together at shop 5 number 198 Oxford Road.

We must also alert you to the downright amazing gourmet pizzas that fly out of that pizza-oven leaving a plume of order envy in their wake. . The pizzas are crisp and fresh – we highly recommend the the Proscuitto -tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, salami, coppa and rocket, or the Tini with its tomato, mozzarella, caramelized onion, dolce latte and coppa combination. Leave the banting at the door please.

Renowned for its restaurant quality but home like style food, the FrancoItalian fare is sensational. From the most authentic rigatoni bake to the fillet mignon in a brandy cream sauce, Rabbit in the Moon has hit the sweet spot between fine dining and family style cuisine. The artisanal bread is baked on site daily and al the fresh herbs used are from the Rabbit’s little garden. And while we have your attention, do try the walnut and butter ravioli if you want a real taste sensation.

Simon, his father and manager Nuno (a trained chef with a flare for Spanish cuisine) keep the temperature in the kitchen fiery. With their combined flare for people, food and textures, it is a winning combination.

Simon Gaganakis took over the restaurant in 2011 keeping the concept and feel close to its original roots but growing the menu offering and business significantly. “The restaurant (which was a lot smaller) was already in Illovo but we could see that it was the area to be in. Over the years it has grown into quite the restaurant hub.” There must be 15 to 20 restaurants in the immediate area to date. This creates a lot of scary competition but at the same time healthy competition to keep us on our toes”.

16

While the menu is predominately Italian, simple, authentic Italian dishes might we add, there are a few other dishes thrown in for variety and to keep it interesting? As for their signature dish? Well that depends on the mood and taste of the moment. We like it that Simon keeps us on our toes like that. But of course there are some old faithfuls. “A favourite of mine is the Tagliata Di manzo (grilled filled, sliced and parmesan shaving and rocket between the slices, dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, rosemary, garlic and lemon rind). Hello Joburg • June 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

Simon is grateful to have their repeat customers and newbies passing by regularly. He loves that their clientele vary works to create a space and palate for all taste. “We are lucky enough to have been able to create a space and atmosphere that appeals to an incredibly wide variety of ages and types. I’d never be able to give you one type of clientele apart from the fact that they all have worldly palates and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.” It is believed that if you see a rabbit outline in the moon, you must truly know or be in love. So for those who keep coming back for the food and the ambience, consider yourselves under the Rabbit’s love spell. We’ll be joining you soon. ERAWAN THAI RESTAURANT & BAR

For Joburg’s diehard foodies who like to push their taste palettes to the greatest frontiers of flavour, the 22nd of April marked an occasion that would go down as smoothly as the finest Pinot Gris - the media launch of Erawan Thai Restaurant in Bedfordview.

S

ituated on a 90-degree sweet spot of Van Vuuren and Kloof at Village View Shopping Centre, the restaurant is a meeting point of Thai and Oriental cuisine, without being inauthentic. Take for example their Goong Tood dish, which consists of deep fried prawns with spring onion in a crispy wonton pastry served with a sweet chilli sauce…a refreshing variety to the usual Tempura. Try dipping into Erawan’s delicious Dim Sum because the establishment’s 5-star head chef Pachanuwat Nuthong and owner Chris James, assure diners that despite being flavoursome, all meals that come out of their hong kreua (Thai word for kitchen) are prepared with the healthiest and freshest ingredients — not to mention the love. One things that impressed guests upon setting foot inside this Eastern haven was its charming simplicity and unaffected tranquillity. True to its roots, its walls are enshrined with motifs of the polycephalic elephant deity Erawan as well as the goddess of mercy, Kuan, who meditate on a lotus flower. The hospitability was second to none — but then again Thai people are renowned for their warmth and attentiveness — as each time a champagne flute meniscus dropped, a friendly lady clad in as a pha nung would be standing by to top it up, with a smile. The guests on the evening seemed to be soaking up all the warmth in this beatific atmosphere along with the hot, sweet, sour and salty flavours, balanced expertly in Thai fashion. Amid the star-studded guest list was Miss Earth: accompanied by her runner-up princesses, they added to the radiance of the evening with their sociality and vivacity.

Our Mediterranean based menu comprises delicious breakfasts, light meals, lunches and dinners. Using the freshest and most wholesome ingredients with a hint of the contemporary to excite even the most desiring “foodies” palates, we offer an experience to remember. FIND US Sunninghill Village Shopping Centre, Corner Maxwell Drive and Edison Crescent. 011 234 2714 info@beachblanketbohemia.co.za www.beachblanketbohemia.co.za

Since one can’t get enough of a good thing, it’s good to know that Erawan is open 7 days a week between 11AM and 10PM — a good excuse to steal many a lavish Thai dining experiences with friends and family. H @GlamFoodieZA Hello Joburg • June 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

Father’s Day LuncH: Slow Roasted Rosemary Lamb

W

ith father’s day approaching, I feel such nostalgia reminiscing over father’s day lunches with my dad, when I was young - the kids dancing about in the garden, mothers, grandmothers and aunts busily prepping a delicious feast, and the warm, inviting smell of rosemary lamb – my dad’s absolute favourite meal! This recipe has been in my family for generations, and is truly an all-time classic. Using only 100% fresh herbs to flavour, and free from any storebought marinades or sauces, this slow cooked lamb is a fabulous and healthy treat for all dads this Father’s Day.

Prep Time: 15mins Cooking Time: 4 hours Servings: 6-8 Total Cost: R250 Ingredients 2 kg leg of lamb (preferably grass fed) 5 stems fresh rosemary – stems removed 1 cup fresh sage – stems removed and leaves chopped 1 tsp. Himalayan crystal salt 2 tbsp. Zataar (Middle Eastern spice mix) 1 tsp. crushed garlic ½ tsp. ground cumin

¾ cup Olive Oil 4 cloves garlic – thinly sliced Instructions Preheat Oven to 180°C Step 1: Prepare Marinade Place olive oil, rosemary, sage, zaatar, cumin, crushed garlic and salt in a small bowl. Mix together thoroughly and allow to stand. Step 2: Prepare Lamb Lightly grease large ovenproof cooking pot with olive oil spray. Rinse rack of lamb Using s sharp knife, cut evenly dispersed incisions into the meat of the lamb and stuff each incision with 2 small slices of the fresh garlic. Repeat until entire rack of lamb has been covered. Step 3: Marinade Lamb Place rack of lamb into ovenproof cooking pot. Using a basting brush, evenly baste the lamb with the marinade until entire rack of lamb is coated and marinade is finished. Place in the fridge for half an hour to allow marinade to seep into the lamb meat

Step 4: Cooking Remove rack of lamb from fridge and place into pre-heated oven. Slow roast at 180°C for 2 hours. Reduce heat to 120°C and cook for an additional 2 hours until meat is very tender. Be sure to check on the lamb every half an hour or so to ensure the meat is being cooked evenly. Step 5: Remove from heat. Serve hot with a side of steamed greens, roast veggies or oven-baked sweet potato Bon Appetit! Yours in Health Always, Cara-Lisa

chef of the month

Why there’s no room for sissies, it’s best to keep it simple, and important to create a pack strong in number... This month we upped our foodie street cred when we chatted to Greig Walker, owner of Craighall’s Cnr Café and the (in)famously delicious, Wolfpack (x2). Never one to settle for less, it’s no wonder the corporate world was never for Greig (doesn’t like being told what to do). Instead a love of skateboarding, graphitti, hip hop and wanting to be a cartoonist, ninja or a karate instructor, evolved into deciding to open his own restaurant at 26.

W

e’re sitting outside the iconic Cnr Café on a pleasant Jozi afternoon and blonde, blue-eyed Greig Walker’s just reflected that it doors were opened on 10 December 2003. Our conversation has woven an interesting path, at pace. – If you’ve ever eaten at this deli-come bistro establishment or even just grabbed your morning coffee en-route, you’ll know that this hands-on, chef-come-creator of simple and brilliant Jozi eateries, gets lots done in a day. Everyday. And he’s never too stressed to share a funny story. Like the one where “a lighty” being chased by the cops, turned off his headlights and crashed straight through the front door - which opened again at 9am... Charisma alone isn’t what’s made this Jozi boy, or his rapidly growing family of eateries, part of the very fabric of Jozi Hip. Rather it’s a combination of talents... An instinct for making creative yet simple food which pleases and spaces that feel everfresh, in which to enjoy it. Maybe it’s due even more to resilience. “There’s nothing sissy about the food industry. It’s a hectic

place - physically demanding, hard work in the kitchen, long hours, getting slammed around. Sport helps me cope,” says Greig. when asked about other loves, he mentions boxing and waking up at six for an “insane” yoga class, to mentally prepare for the day. This mix of passion, awareness and selfbelief translates itself into the menu creation process, which is intrinsic to the lifeblood (and lifespan) of Cnr Café. And applies also to the success behind the first craft beer/ burger bar in Parkhurst (Wolfpack) and more recently, Wolfpack Sandton. “I’m the fussiest eater.” Says Greig, “And don’t like recipe books because I feel I can’t claim or make a meal, my own. I’ m no master of techniques but prefer one-pan wonders. It’s like I can see flavours. I visualise what I want a meal to taste like. It’s always about texture too, with a refreshing element, plus a crunch. Flavour must be a combination of three things. My current favourite ingredient is crème fraiche. It’s great to calm down another flavour – like hectic, crispy chorizo muted by crème fraiche and served with a protein.”

Other instincts come naturally too, like treating his waiters well, so staff turnover is low and dressing them stylishly in Jozi skyline tees and Feiyue sneakers. Also delivering exactly what his loyal Craighall clientele want, before they even know it. “It’s a sophisticated crowd. Locals have been coming here for 12 years, daily. You have to keep it interesting and also cater for those who want exactly the same thing everytime.” And then there’s the spontaneity that saw the name “Wolfpack” come out of a festive evening with his managers at The Jolly Roger. One that involved howling and wolfish bonding... And behind it all? The creative bombshell, Tammy, his wife (who actually crystalised the name for them). Behind things that just seem to work, there’s often a formula. In this case, it’s the woman behind the man, a little girl (his daughter Bella, now three) and, more recently, Max (their new baby boy). Because, what really gets Greig’s wolfblood flowing? ... An extra few mins in the morning, cuddling up in bed with his pack. It is all or nothing at Liege Café

I

t’s not just the fresh influence that’s evident at the newly opened Liege Café in Atholl Square. It’s not just the French inspiration nor the Belgian motivation or the patissier’s pastries that makes this restaurant one of my favorite spots at the moment but rather their philosophy that it is all or nothing. There is no in-between with the Liege Café, there is no middle ground but rather a fully explosive and complete palette of fine restauranteering. A visit to this lavish café will leave you wanting more. So what is their secret? I think it is quite simple. Experience and excellence. The Schevenels families first ever Patisserie was opened in Malines, Belgium in 1897. That is one hundred and eighteen years ago. Last year the Schevenels so kindly brought this concept to South Africa “with the establishment of the first local patisserie and gourmet restaurant, Liege Café” With years of experience, with international success, great acclaim and a passion for food, the restaurant is a culinary haven. It is important to note Hello Joburgers that every aspect of the menu is made from scratch. Homemade mayonnaise- check, homemade salad dressing-check, homemade crème anglaise-check, homemade croissants, even homemade ganache and my all time favorite homemade macaroons- check-check-check. They focus on fresh quality ingredients that are simple, but make no mistake, only the most optimum ingredients are used.

JENDA - THE PLACE TO BE SEEN

“A

meal is the whole experience of getting together and sharing with friends. It is more than food”- that’s the quote by Jinny Fleishman that adorns the new Jenda Restaurant menu and the philosophy behind this fresh new experience on offer at Montecasino. Both the restaurant and the menu have been designed for sharing. The restaurant includes several unique spaces – couches and low tables in a screened off outside area with a pleasant Mediterranean feel and makes it the ideal place to relax; a restaurant section for more formal sit-down meals; a flaring bar; and an upstairs wine tasting room. The décor is fresh, slick and welcoming. The menu includes ‘small plates for sharing’, offering a range of delectable snack foods for the South African palate; a selection of sliders – lamb, beef and chicken; seafood, including prawns with lime and chilli, deep-fried calamari with tartare sauce, grilled salmon and lemon mayonnaise; crisp chicken wings, larny potato fries with truffle oil; mini cheese fondue; grilled halloumi; and Jenda’s ‘famous tortilla sandwiches’ – lamb, thyme and tzatziki; beef, onion, mixed pepper; chicken, mushroom and bacon.

Although the menu is predominantly made up of small sharing portions, it also offers an a la carte menu which includes entrecote, beef fillet, parmesan-crusted chicken breast, panfried linefish, as well as the Jenda burger with slow-roasted tomato and onion relish, bacon, jalapenos, and cheddar cheese. Salads are equally appetising – grilled beef salad, goat’s cheese, rocket, and micro greens with honey soy dressing; and roasted pear salad with blue cheese, crispy bacon bits, croutons, greens and blueberry dressing. The comprehensive wine menu also ensures that there is always something for everyone and features wines procured at the Nederburg and Cape Winemakers Guild auctions last year, where Tsogo Sun spent just under R3,2 million and took top spot for total sales by a single bidder. The menu carries the sage suggestion, ‘After dinner, sit awhile and enjoy the evening, for later on you might be hungry again, and so the circle of good food continues.’ That’s what it’s about. efore I start to jot down another ramble, I would like to dedicate this short article to my father. Sadly my father is not with us anymore, after losing his life in another violent crime in our beloved country. He was a man that taught me some of the valuable ideas and principles that I’m going to be writing about today..... If today is the day that you have decided to turn your life around and today is the day that you have decided to live a better quality of life, then today, my friend, you have began an incredible journey!

Learning to enjoy the journey, in order to reach your physical goals! This article is for all you new comers to the lifting and fitness game, with goals of becoming champions. Think twice about the champion part and fall in love with the lifting of iron and steel. I cannot stress this first sentence more! The reason being, is because in this game, our ‘end goal’ can often end up being the thing that trips us up! The reason for this is because realistically our ‘End Goal’ (a quality physique), is not a couple days, weeks or months away..... It’s more like at least a year or even a lot longer away! Thus if u do not learn to fall in love with the life style, in love with the burn, the pain, the clanking of metal…, you most probably won’t see that ‘end goal’ , you won’t see that quality physique, and thus you would have faild. Train hard, eat right, find joy in the disciplines and practice them consistently. Grow up, and into the sport day by day, and thus avoid setting yourself up for disappointment, expecting too much, being ever critical and trying to satisfy an image. The real deal is in the training, the struggle, the perseverance, the self control and the determination. The champion will rise up from these qualities. The top floor is just too far, and thus a simpler game plan is needed. A game plan that gets you to tackle one floor at a time, one step at a time, with guts, perseverance, and mental toughness, you will achieve that quality physique that you so desire! Nothing is impossible! Often all we need is to believe, have faith, and change our game plan! So I challende you today! How tough are you? You say you want it bad? Are you willing to shift your mindset?

Dr Mark Dr. Mark Steinmann, MBBCh (Wits), FC Plast Surg (SA) completed his training at the University of the Witwatersrand and obtained his fellowship from the College of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa. Dr Mark consults from 15 on Seventh an ultra modern, multi-faceted beautification centre, where highly specialized treatments such as Fraxel Laser meets traditional skin care treatments such as Botox, fillers and chemical peels. Dr Mark explains the difference between a medical spa and a standard beauty salon. He also outlines the benefits of consulting with a plastic surgeon and using the right products. What is a medical spa?

A medical spa is a professional beauty clinic encompassing highly trained medical personnel including, a medical doctor, a professional nurse and beauty therapists. A medical spa focuses on rejuvenation and the practical reversal of the aging process using the very latest and scientifically proven modalities and procedures. How is it different from a beauty spa?

The client or patient is managed individually and treatments are specifically prescribed to the presenting concern or problem. A medical spa encompasses a range of holistic treatments, whether it by blade, injection, lasers or cosmeceutical products. Why do you feel that you can achieve better skin care than a beauty spa?

Traditional spas tend to focus on pampering and relaxation. Whilst some of our signature facials can be relaxing and pampering, the vast majority of the procedures we perform are goal directed. As an example, we have a range of chemical peels that vary in strength. A registered nurse or a medical doctor can only administer deeper peels. We also offer a variety of skin rejuvenation treatments that include Fraxel laser, micro-needling and dermabrasion. Why do you feel that having a plastic surgeon on site is more beneficial than a general practitioner?

34

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a specialty that medical doctors can study at an accredited university. The minimum time required after medical training is 6 years. Plastic Surgeons are highly specialized and exceptionally well trained doctors in the field of aesthetics. The knowledge from an academic perspective, practical training and motivation in their art is thus completely tangible. There is no other university degree that offers a course in aesthetics in South Africa other than Plastic Surgery. Hello Joburg • June 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

What can one expect when we visit your medical spa?

We offer a complimentary skin analysis using our state-of-the-art Visia Complexion Analysis system. Patients are offered free consultations with our registered nurse or one of our highly trained beauty therapists. There is also the option have a direct consultation with our resident plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Steinmann. We believe that prevention is better than cure. A large part of our practice is to focus on the basics that so many people tend to forget. As a Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Steinmann will offer surgery as a last resort, depending on the presenting problem. All possible solutions are therefore offered, thus keeping with our holistic approach to rejuvenation and antiaging. What skin products do you use and why?

We are inundated with a copious amount of cosmeceuticals in the industry. All of the products we use have sound clinical data to back their claims. As new treatments and products are brought in, we test them ourselves and perform our own in-house clinical trials before offering them to the client. We therefore have confidence in all of the products we provide and use at our medical spa. At the moment our preferred brands are Skinceuticals are Dermaquest. H

Your personal style…

My style is very diverse. During the day I like to be more casual, lots of high tops and snap back caps but at night I like to dress more formal.

What have you learnt about yourself during your football journey? I’ve learnt that my mind is my strongest tool, if you get your mind clear and positive I promise you will see amazing things happen. I’ve also learnt that you need a big heart in this game because it is not always easy sailing but you have to just keep moving forward.

What’s the biggest personal change you’ve ever made? To be honest I don’t like change, I just try stick to what works for me and just continue to do exactly that, so I haven’t made any big changes in my life.

Tell us something about you that will shock us. I am a big hip hop head and I actually wanted to be a rapper when I was younger *laughs*

If you had to choose three people to have dinner with dead or alive, who would they be? It would have to be Hugh Hefner, David Beckham and 2 Pac

What is your biggest regret? I had a chance to sign with a team in the MLS in America when I was 19 but because of financial issues I didn’t sign. I look back, I know I was young and dumb but I do like to live and learn

A Man’s World

Men like having their own space. In fact, men love having their own freedom. To be dominating and daring, powerful and progressive. Some men translate this into buying sophisticated homes in every province, whilst others build their own day-dreams in garages by fixing vintage cars. Then there are those who visit lavish strip bars and smoke cigars while playing blackjack at the casino. Then others who would much rather chill at a friend’s place with some craft beer and braai... There are all sorts of men in this world (some I’d rather not touch base on) but either way, this article speaks to all of them. Providing them with the Top 5 places in Joburg that allow a man to be a man! COPPERLAKE BREWERIES FOURWAYS Craft Beer Joburgers! What else would you like us to say, except this is a step in the best direction for Broadacres Mall which surely caters to most of the Fourways and Sandton region. Other than Gilroy’s Brewery (which has been located all the way in Mulderdrift for the past century), Copperlake has since become the second Brewpub in Joburg! Initially Copperlake started with a small selection of beers (as a pop-up pub) but has now evolved to include light and premium lagers, as well as some English Ale, an IPA and a Weiss. With an element of class – this is definitely one the best spots to catch up with your college drinking friend. 011 036 6028

CHURCHILLS BAR – MELROSE ARCH There’s no such thing as an over-indulgence of decadence, right? Because if there was Churchill’s wouldn not exist. It’s the perfect place in its’ prime because it breathes elegance through those studded leather seats in a golden shade of brown. Through that landscape window over-looking Melrose Arch’s moonlight where many a men have had life-changing epiphanies. Through the largest selection of single Malts, Premium Whisky’s and Champagnes in Joburg North, all these men have probably left Churchills with a widest smile on their faces. Perhaps you didn’t know that this is the same team who opened Café Vacca Matta, FTV and Movida… 011 684 1040 THE CAR SPA – SANDHURST The valet. That word sounds as easy on the lips as it looks on the eyes. Having your Benz or BMW scrubbed from all ends and insides. To top it all off, there’s a put-put range on-site! You certainly won’t get bored doing this chore. 011 783 1888

DE HOEK COUNTRY HOTEL If you have not yet visited the harmonious De Hoek Country Hotel then you have not yet lived. For those looking for pristine landscapes, rolling hills, picturesque serenity and an unforgettable laid-back experience then I have found the ideal destination. Located in the marvelous Magaliesburg valley lays this quaint five star country hotel. And only an hour out of Johannesburg there really is no excuse not to visit. This stately residence hotel in the heart of the Magalies River is an absolute treasure. What makes this hotel so superior is its dignified nature within an unspoiled setting. There is quite simply no other location like it. The De Hoek Country Hotel is a proud destination where class meets modernism and where formality interacts with excellence. This masterpiece gives home to sixteen superior suites and twelve new contemporary suites, satisfyingly we spent a night in the newly created new quarter rooms overlooking the mountains and the umbrella of luscious green trees and manicured gardens. The

new suites are stunning, spacious and gloriously fanned with sunshine. Contemporary design mixed with a touch of homeliness makes for the perfect balance. Nestled in the center of the suite is a little nook, which oversees the countryside, and is the main focus of the bedroom. I think it is sheer genius! Another luxury is the heated towel racks. Attention to detail is constantly evident at this hotel. Fresh rusks ( the crispest and crunchiest I have ever tasted) await you in the corridor, with a jar of cloudy marshmallows and Nespresso pods at the coffee station. It really is the small things that count and De Hoek have left no stone unturned. The hotel is a memorable experience, which leads me into my next thought, the restaurant that boasts a five-course fine dining experience by chef Michael Holenstein. Glass windows and doors envelope the dining area and emphasize this as the hallmark of the hotel. A faultless dining

experience, excellent standard of cuisine and service that leave an everlasting impression. De Hoek hotel promises an exclusive experience in a beautiful tranquil environment and in the wake of the twentieth century I say Bravo! It certainly delivers and then some. The visitors that assemble to the country hotel will certainly be that of a loyal breed. 014 577 9600 www.dehoek.com @dehoek

motoring Ford Kuga 1.5 EcoBoost The weekend warrior

“We’ve updated the Kuga range with new engines that deliver more power but also lower emissions,” says Tracey Delate, Ford Marketing Manager. “It’s part of our strategy to offer eco-friendly vehicles that don’t compromise on driving employment or innovative consumer technologies.” Because the Kuga is eco-friendly this means that it is low fuel consumption and emission and it is environmentally friendly (EcoBoost petrol emits 11g/km less CO2).

“It’s part of our strategy to offer eco-friendly vehicles that don’t compromise on driving employment” Another benefit is the choice between three powerful engines, an updated version of the 2.0 TDCi turbo diesel unit, a new 1.5 EcoBoost petrol engine and the all-new 2.0 EcoBoost, which is based on the scintillating engine used in the Ford ST performance hatchback. You have to give it to Ford for making an incredible, innovative vehicle, that is classic yet comfortable, alluring yet practical. And while it may

not be as sexy to discuss the boot space over the engine, it needs to be mentioned. The Kuga is a family vehicle- spacious and expansive and of course safety being paramount. The Kuga enjoys a five star safety training rating and an outstanding arsenal of active and passive features- ABS brakes, Traction control and even Hill Launch assists, basically the car is stable, grounded and reliable. It can be trusted. This deems most relevant when taking this beauty on a long distance getaway. Smooth and silky in its delivery complimented with comfortable seats and dual electronic air temperature control, it is simply one of the best driving experiences you will ever encounter. Eagerly we packed our picnic basket, which was supplied by Ford and we hit the highway towards the Cradle of Humankind. She purrs as you activate the adaptive cruise control with forward alert. Bliss. Effortless and graceful she is a privilege to steer and offers a firm connectedness with the road. Her coat glistens in the open-air sunshine, her Tiger Eye Metallic color makes a fearless impact. After enjoying our delicious treats at the top of the mountain with our Ford picnic basket we indulge in the most breathtaking views of South Africa. Rediscovering our country on an adventure with the perfect companion- the Ford Kuga- was a game changer. We are officially devoted fans of the Kuga and whilst you may think I’m a prude, there is nothing more satisfying than steering in safety, driving in luxury and arriving in style. www.ford.co.za

Dads, grown up boys really. Still naughty kids at heart with a love for toys. This month I showcase two new cars on South Africa’s roads- Opel’s new kid on the block, the Adam- named after the brand’s father. And the father of all off-road vehicles, the Land Rover, with a good-looking, well priced and a very capable offering in their Freelander replacement, the Discovery Sport. Happy Father’s Day to all you dads, this one is for you and my dad, Alfonso, who taught me many things, but the one most relevant to this article- my motoring passion and how to drive. Land Rover Discovery Sport I recall the confusion when Land Rover announced and started advertising the arrival of their all-new Discovery Sport. A quick visit to their Facebook page and a scroll down to the posts featuring the new Discovery Sport were bolstered with a host of comments. Somenot positive. The reason: many believed that the new car would be replacing the much loved and iconic boxy, Discovery. This gorgeous new compact SUV isn’t replacing the Discovery 4, in fact it is the Discovery’s newest sibling. It is smaller, albeit it promises to be the most versatile SUV in its class. Through a nifty configuration and the use of space saving rear suspension- seating has been optimised for two upfront, three in the middle and two in the rear- it’s a seven seater. It’s somewhat compact footprint doesn’t inhibit its aspirations to keep up with its bigger brother, the Discovery 4. The luggage floor length is 1 887mm with second row seats folded flat- ideal for awkward, long or bulky loads. Maximum leg room is 999mm and the second row of seats can travel back and forth 160mm, with SD4/Si4 S models and above, for enhanced comfort. The Discovery Sport, was launched in May. Its arrival denotes the replacement of the Freelander range of product. Land Rover are now focusing on three product ranges, and within those ranges are a host of products. The first, is the Defender range: 90, 110 and 130. Next up the “hill” is the Discovery range: Discovery Sport and the Discovery 4. At the pinnacle, is the Range Rover product range: Evoque, Sport and full body Range Rover. The all-new Discovery Sport is set to be a firm favourite amongst the well-heeled and set to sit proudly but quietly in the parking bays of private schools, with the more overt and pretentious rivals in the market place making the noise. The Discovery Sport range comprises of the entry level S model, topped by the SE, HSE and HSE Luxury model, which is the flagship model in the range. Pricing begins at R542 000 and up to R731 500 for the flagship HSE Luxury model.

Opel Adam At the beginning of time there was Adam. Biblically the first dude to walk the lush green grass of that gorgeous garden, the Garden of Eden. He ended up stuffing it all up and eating the infamous ‘apple’. Well that’s one story of Adam. The other is the creator of the Opel brand, a German chap by the name of Adam Opel. He founded the brand back in 1862. 150 years later arrived the third Adam in my story of Adams, this one- a cheeky pint sized pocket rocket, in the form of a two door hatchback from Opel named after the brand’s creator. This brand new two door, four seater is equipped with loads of gizmos to keep any techno-fundi busy. The powerful, trend focused and non-retro design makes for a bold statement. Believe me. I drove the Parkhurst boulevard slowly and enjoyed the admiring glances from onlookers. Their mouths sounding out the words, ‘what’s that?’, as I drove past in slow motion. The Adam features an all new three cylinder 1.0 Turbo ECOTEC® engine. It sounds tiny but defines the term, ‘dynamite comes in small packages’. In fact, it boasts 85kW of power and is quite capable of darting the Adam’s light frame from 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds, while easily slipping from gear-to-gear in the stateof-the-art six speed gearbox. Modesty isn’t its best quality but fuel consumption sure is a contender for the title, sipping a meagre 6.1l per/100km. The Adam is priced from R189 900 for the 1,4, R209 900 for the well spec’d 1.0 Jam, or if you go all out, you could splash on the 1.0 Glam, which is the flagship model- boasting a list of mod cons as long as my arm for R232 900. & homedecor Home happens best when…

… Soweto meets Parktown West. Every single aspect, finish and object in lighting engineer Enoch Zikalala’s palatial home, reflects his refined taste and precision in everything he does. Yet it all looks very effortless.

O

n this autumnal evening, Jan Smuts where it intersects Parktown West is humming with the strivings of peak hour traffic. Not a pretty sight when you’re stuck in it. But now we’re high up above the petrol fumes and the rubbing of human and machine energy, on the lower patio of one of the most inspiring homes in Jozi. Set slightly back and nestling high up on the edge of one of the city’s oldest suburbs, this house, with its sweeping arched roof trusses has been renovated to retain the priceless charm of the now rare, original pressed ceilings, wide passages and Oregon pine floors. With additional levels added on, high above a topiary tree garden, it’s a multi-dimensional, modern masterpiece. And the perfect, lightbathed abode of a leading businessman and innovator in the world of industrial lighting engineering. - One whose love of design began as a Sowetan boy who saved up for his first real car, by making wire toy cars. Mr Zikalala greets us in a pristine dark suit, with the widest smile, crinkliest eyes and

shiniest deep mahogany leather shoes I’ve ever seen. Immediately his pride in every detail he’s loving cultivated in his house is clear. And as you step into his territory you experience sheer admiration. Every window opening is swathed in great reams of draped damask fabrics, tied back artfully, reminiscent of delicately folded napkins on a sumptuous dinner table. Nomsa Shabangu from Sasa Creations (011 804 5294) helped with these, he tells us. The effect is never overwhelming though, since the tonal values of cream and gold, with artful flashes of black, white and rich red, are consistent throughout the house. So the overall aesthetic take-out is perfect simplicity. Here and there, the curtain fabric is flimsy and ethereal, so as not to hide the magnificent views and to compliment the pools of light that fall from understated light features on stone-clad walls. In stark contrast to the sumptuous drapes, is the absence of any clutter or fuss at all. It all feels minimal, modern and sure. And so neat you feel you can breathe and simply gaze for hours at the shiny wooden edging of a perfectly conceived crushed velvet sofa in the sitting room - as Jazz tinkles softly in the background. Or imagine a night’s DSTV viewing on a head rested, faun-coloured Bakos brothers couch, with ticking-stitch detail. Each room has the occasional, carefullyselected item of beauty, with an African aesthetic as a modest focal point. “Picked up”,

says Enoch, in the case of a crafted wooden bowl from Argentina, on auction. “I greatly admire beautifully designed cultural objects,’ he adds. With the restraint and attention to detail obvious in every room, the colour palette is further muted and echoed in natural stone and wooden textures of the furniture and the LED lighting features, dotted here and there inside and out, to create warm pools of, rather than bright, light. Somehow, the occasional pop of deep oxblood and maroon red reminds one of the incredibly beautiful and diligently polished red floors of old fashioned cornercafes and beautiful old African farm kitchens. This somehow completes the whole look and is evident in the rich velvet fabric of two chairs

From born and bred in Soweto to making it his mission to retain the charm and uniqueness of a gem of a renovated heritage house in Parktown West, right down to his super shiny shoes, Mr Enoch Zikalala is one effortlessly, stylish home-maker.” in the TV room, a stained glass detail above the entrance to the kitchen and fantastic retro red leather couch in Enoch’s much-loved study. “I’m very happy here” Enoch concludes. And quite frankly with that soul reflected in his aesthetic, he deserves to be. H Hello Joburg • June 2015 • www.gohello.co.za

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country.
