foreword

People of Joburg!

Kennedy Thabiso What exactly does a fashion stylist do? Break it down for us. It just means I drink lots of free champagne. Kidding! Basically we offer a “fashion curation” service to media personalities, brands and photographers for photo shoots or appearances. Because I go to many store openings/range launches and fashion weeks, I’m entrusted with creating a distinct and stylish visual concept. Similar to the ever-changing Joburg, no two (work) days are the same – I could be in charge of the styling for a medical aid commercial today, a lingerie brochure the next. Snapchat – yay or nay? Nay. For me, it’s way too much admin. But it’s very popular with the #FashPack and brands. They take full advantage of the platform, especially at international fashion weeks, promoting everything from front-row runway pictures to backstage footage.Think Michael Kors and others sharing their “snap

What does Joburg mean to you? Acceptance. It’s where I feel most at home. It’s the people, architecture, street art … the vibe of the city. No two days are the same, just like its people. We’re all different and we embrace that.

ART DIRECTOR Jessica Notelo

Hottest trend for summer? Being on Snapchat? Sartorially, well, I try not to be too trends focused. Sounds weird but I always ask my clients what they feel most wonderful in and I build from there. It’s too easy to paint by numbers and say, for example, sea shell necklaces are in this year, when not everyone likes them. So yes, try something new, definitely, but make sure that it’s within the context of your lifestyle and taste. Unless you really don’t have taste; then call me. What can’t you live without? Great cologne (Tom Ford Noir Extreme), SPF 50 (Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster) and a crisp white shirt (T.M.Lewin – a high price tag for a basic item but a great investment). I’ve always had an intense passion for food. I love cooking, baking and entertaining, and have been cooking since I could reach the stove top. I’m also passionate about staying healthy and live what I do as far as I can. Though we all fall off the wagon occasionally. I enjoy training and staying active. It relaxes me so I train seven days a week, alternating between weight training, swimming, cycling and running. I also love the outdoors; weekend mountain-biking or hiking trips are a great way to stay fit.

to look stylish all year long:

New romantics The Victorian trend has evolved into a romantic take on fashion in 2016. The trend includes feathers, pastels, chiffon, floral prints and embroidery, as well as an overall sophisticated girlishness. Slip dresses and lingerie worn as outerwear have become an extension of this as the ultimate expression of femininity.

Sundays are my relaxing day. I’m in and out of the store over weekends, but I make time for a long swim or run in the afternoon to clear my head and prepare myself for the week ahead. Spending quality time with close friends is also a must.

The low-key HIGH LIFE

Higher Ground Restaurant offers the splendour of a panoramic view of Jozi’s skyline within a relaxed environment It’s just after six on a Wednesday evening and tables are filling up fast. What’s striking is the assortment of people in the restaurant’s different areas – executives unwinding over sundowners on the roomy deck, families having an early bite in the patio area and teenagers making the most of the summer weather at tables on the grass. It looks like Mark really has created a second home for all Joburgers.

Higher Ground attracts an ever-growing group of regulars - some of the familiar faces pop in up to four times a week

After spending the evening chatting with Mark and his team, tasting one of their signature dishes, the salmon stacker (a beautifully presented mould of avocado, tomato and capers topped with smoked salmon and cream cheese, and served with bruschetta), and walking through the restaurant’s many areas, we think it’s the casual atmosphere, fuss-free

“The restaurant that was here at the time of my first visit was very quiet, but I saw the potential to transform it into one of Joburg’s top meeting spots.” And so Mark, who has more than 30 years’ experience in the restaurant business, and his team set about knocking down walls, putting in glass sliding doors and styling the interiors to turn Higher Ground into what it is today: a light and welcoming space.

Higher Ground now attracts an ever-growing group of regulars. Mark jokes that some of the familiar faces spend more time at his restaurant than at their own homes, popping in up to four times a week. “The moment I saw the view, I knew this was a restaurant I could work with,” says Mark Burger. He’s referring to the breathtaking cityscape that’s visible from almost every one of Higher Ground Restaurant’s tables. Why we love markets

G

(and you will too!)

one are the days when markets were about knitted goods and toffee apples. Now it’s organic fruit and veggies spilling out of wooden crates, live music, offbeat fashion, one-of-a-kind trinkets, artisanal goods of every description, gigantic pans of sizzling seafood paella, food trucks, sparkling wine and fairtrade coffee… An intoxicating mix of everything that makes city living so pleasurable. New urban markets keep popping up, and we know why: it’s one of the most colourful ways to shop. And for the foodie, it’s a feast! To market, to market we’ll go! Just be sure to bring a shopping basket and a big canvas bag too – and don’t forget a smile for friendly traders who add to the experience.

dining out Bergbron

Plaaskombuis en Padstal

month into 2016 and Joburg’s restaurant scene is blossoming. Hello Joburgers, get excited because we’ve found Jozi’s latest gem. Let us introduce you to the Bergbron Plaaskombuis en Padstal. Normally ‘n boer soek ‘n vrou but not in this case – any boer would rather soek ‘n boerewors from the Plaaskombuis! Steeped in South African history, this restaurant, at the Bergbron Nursery, has just opened and is already creating buzz. We popped in to see (um, taste) what the fuss is all about. Of course we needed to try everything on the menu, so we spent the morning brunching, picking and tasting from the beautiful harvest.

12

So what’s on the menu? The everyday meals of the Afrikaner. Simply put, you’ll find food that whispers to your soul. Home-cooked goodness, full of flavour, created with a whole lot of love. Ouma would be proud! Perhaps you’d judge this restaurant’s culinary offerings with one of SA’s staples in mind, the bobotjie, and Tannie Bets se bobotjie doesn’t disappoint. Creamy texture, well balanced and delicious. Another favourite is the vetkoek susters, light and crispy, served with jam and cheese. As with most of the Plaaskombuis’s dishes, a bite into the doughy vetkoek is filled with South African familiarity. They’re tough to resist and for only R25, they’re impossible to ignore. We also loved the plaatkoekies, served with syrup or the option of bacon and cheese too. Crispy outside, warm and fluffy inside, they’re heavenly. Then we had to try the Plaaskombuis roosterkoek burger, a hearty choice. The combination of homemade bun and succulent beef makes this a real winner. And then when we couldn’t eat another bite, we visited the Padstal (market stall) so we could take some of the delectable traditional cuisine home with us. The food is indulgence personified. It’s clear that the Plaaskombuis’s owner and chef, Johan Smith, who works with Frog and Pepper Catering, has found his happy place in the kitchen. He’s passionate about creating wholesome meals, never skimping on ingredients and using only the finest and freshest. He also makes guests feel so welcome, chatting with us as if we’re all family.

Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

He’s certainly created a one-of-a-kind treasure, and Joburg wouldn’t be the same without him and his quaint eatery. We heartily recommend this darling little restaurant, which takes us back to our roots (when Ouma cooked putupap [stiff porridge] with milk and sugar…) and fills our hearts with what’s important: food and family Corner Bergbron Drive and Helderberg Road, Florida 076 932 4333 f Bergbron Plaaskombuis en Padstal

ireside Bistro sure is heating up the Grant Avenue strip in Norwood. This restaurant is exactly what Jozi needs: a good ol’ steakhouse offering value for your buck. It’s difficult deciding what to pick off the menu as everything’s delicious. For starters, there’s a mean boerewors with cumin and chili flakes – succulent, moist and just plain divine. The calamari tentacles with chili, garlic and tomato concasse are also incredibly tasty. The magic of this restaurant is, of course, in the meat dishes, so for mains we highly recommend the fillet steak roll, served on a fresh baguette, with the best oven-baked chips you’ll ever eat. The Fireside burger is also a knockout, plus it’s served on a homemade bun. Doesn’t get better than that. For dessert, without question you have to try Pete’s Super-Natural Ice-Cream.

Go for the double Valrhona chocolate or popcorn cream with toasted marshmallows and honeycomb. If you prefer something warmer, the malva pudding with roasted peaches and creamy custard is nom nom nom. Bonus Fireside Bistro makes a luscious lamb on the spit every Sunday lunch. They also do takeaways and catering. From business functions to birthday parties or even a casual dudes’ lunch, they’ve got you covered. Dinnertime conversation starters Have you ever found that food tastes better in the company of friends or loved ones? A good meal triggers the senses and often energises the conversation, especially if there is a good sommelier on hand. I find this to be especially true when you serve a degustation menu, as we do at roots restaurant. Degustation refers to the practice of serving many small, flavourful and tastefully prepared dishes that the chef creates and serves to everyone equally. You may think that the practice of serving a degustation menu is restrictive, but there’s a science to it that only the French could have discovered. We all know that the first few bites of any dish are the best, so why not serve only that portion? Then you can move on to the next dish and savour the best portion, all the while discussing the flavours, textures, smells and presentation that you and your guests experience together.

hink dim sum, think Thai, think melt in your mouth… think the Good Luck Club! We just adore this cool and quirky restaurant. Whether you’re in the mood for a work lunch, coffee date or romantic night out for two, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. It’s also a hugely popular hangout for Joburg’s hipsters; if you’ve ever visited, you’ll know why.

Excellent service and yummy food are a sure thing every time you pop in, but – here’s a hot HJ tip – plan your visit for a Tuesday and you’ll get an amazing dim sum deal too. Yes, every Tuesday is Dim Sum Dinsdag at Good Luck Club, where you’ll get ten pieces of dim sum for just R80!

sized parcels appear in small steamer baskets. The spinach and cream cheese flavour is our favorite. Delicate, velvety pockets filled with a winning flavour combination, these scrumptious morsels are some of the best we’ve tasted – order lots if you want to share!

And does this start a conversation! By sharing the same food and having the sommelier pair each dish to a wine, you’ll soon find everyone discussing their meal. “Do you taste the beetroot in this dish? I don’t see it, but the flavour certainly comes through.”, “What do you think the chef wanted to represent with this dish?” or “I never though a fortified wine would pair so well with the deconstructed milk tart, what do you think?” So give a degustation menu a try and see how food not only tastes better in the company of loved ones, but how the conversation can flow when triggered by a well-crafted menu. EB Social Kitchen & Bar Executive Chef

Russell Armstrong

W

e’ve interviewed a couple of chefs over the years and they’ve ranged from strange to arrogant at the best of times. But Chef Russell Armstrong is a much-needed palate cleanser – down to earth, insightful, entertaining and frank. He cares about what matters the most: simple, good food.

With his dry sense of humour and Michelin star restaurant experience in London and France, the Australian chef is still wrapping his head around the South African culinary landscape and its quirks. Let’s be honest here – as South African patrons, we tend to be set in our ways and we know it. We like what we know and we know what we like. But Chef Russell has been hungry to challenge our traditional dining experiences since opening the Social Kitchen & Bar at Hyde Park Corner’s newly revamped Exclusive Books in December, together with Exclusive Books CEO Benjamin Trisk. The principle is simple: no matter who you are, there’s a book and a meal just for you. Food and reading go hand in hand when it comes to life’s simple comforts, according to the pioneering duo, and the Social Kitchen & Bar is the brand’s equaliser. Only a few weeks down the line and the feedback has been nothing short of extraordinary, with people either taking it all in like kittens lapping up cream or… well, not.

14

If you’re looking for a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu then you are in the wrong place. This is not the you-can-get-scrambled-eggs-till-11:30am-andthen-a-light-lunch type place. The menu is about simple, good food like freshly shucked Cape oysters and hand-cured beef bresaola. We would also suggest ordering anything, if not everything, off the Josper oven – who can say no to 72-hour beef short ribs? Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

Besides a new menu, Chef Russell is also bringing his global culinary insights to South Africa and there’s a lot we can learn. “The menu can’t be everything to everyone. This is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned,” he says. “You end up doing a bit of everything and specialising in nothing. Why have eight different yet average prawn items on the menu when you can have one incredible dish and change it up occasionally? That’s the dish people will remember and come back for.” The menu is irreverent in its simplicity and we love that. Chef Russell adds, “We have very small plates, small plates and more plates to share, as well as our dishes straight out of the Josper oven, which gives our food its woody, smoky flavours.” So start small and order more if you’re hungry. Chef Russell says upfront that he doesn’t have the classic romantic backstory with food. He didn’t fall in love with cooking while whiling away Sunday afternoons with his family over beaten eggs and fried onions. Sorry for all the purists out there but he really just wanted to be an architect. Truth be told, his matter-of-fact, hard-core father picked up the paper one morning (despite usually reading it at night), saw an advert about cooking and asked his son, as he was leaving for school, if he’d ever considered such a career. Which he hadn’t. Later that day Chef Russell had an epiphany, and, well, the rest is history. He says he didn’t have natural talent and has worked hard to get where he is. Now be warned that there’s a no-doggy-bag policy at the Social Kitchen & Bar, which stems from Chef Russell’s experience in Australia. The concept is banned there from a health and legal perspective, so it’s par for his culinary course. Just imagine Chef ’s good-natured surprise when South African restaurant-goers tried to read him the riot act about

his restaurant and its unorthodox concepts. “Surely you can order less to start and then order more later if you’re still hungry?” he asks with a straight face and giggling eyes. “I don’t see why anyone should order so excessively that they can’t eat what’s on their plate.” We do love his frank assessment that some restaurant-going South Africans have eyes bigger than our stomachs – we’d have to agree. So, why not give a small plate or more plates to share a go at the Social Kitchen & Bar before ordering round two? We rate it {health} The IV vitamin infusion

Taking vitamins in food or capsule form seems to be passé. If the growing global trend is anything to go by, we should start getting them from IV infusions instead

W

e’re an adventurous bunch, the HJ team. Which comes in handy while we’re exploring Joburg’s every nook and cranny to find our city’s most exciting happenings. Wherever we go and whatever we do, we like to get the full experience (so we can tell you about it). So bar-hunting expeditions are frequently followed by hangovers. Damage control usually involves lots of shuteye, as energetic a workout as we can manage and a massive glass of vitamin-packed green juice. But when this remedy didn’t do the job

after a particularly festive December holiday followed by a work-till-you-drop January, we decided to upgrade the green juice. The plan? To try the IV vitamin infusion treatment being offered by more and more of Joburg’s wellness centres. Basically, this involves being connected to a drip which feeds vitamins, minerals and powerful antioxidants directly into the bloodstream to perk up sluggish bodies. In addition to helping with hangovers, it’s claimed that these infusions boost the immune system, enhance fitness, supercharge energy levels and even brighten the complexion. IV vitamin infusions have a strong global following. US celebs like Rihanna and

Madonna are apparently fans, and SA personalities including actress and socialite Khanyi Mbau, singer-songwriter LeAnne Dlamini, DJ Kimmy K and rapper Da L.E.S have all tried the treatment since it started making waves here last year. But there are also sceptics. Many medical experts say that, while the infusions might be a good booster for those with nutrient deficiencies or digestive systems that don’t function properly, for the rest of us they’re unlikely to make much of a difference to health or appearance. But if you’ve been under stress for a long time or seldom eat fruit and veggies, perhaps this is the just the pick-me-up you need. Ask your doc if your nutrient levels could do with a top-up.

Our verdict

Megaboost Vitamin Wellness infusion at Reviv Wellness

Immuno-Vit at Mode De Vie Medical & Aesthetic clinic Eager to find out whether they’re worth the hype, I jumped at the chance to try an IV infusion at Mode De Vie Medical & Aesthetic clinic. I’d been feeling extremely lethargic and overworked so opted for the Immuno-Vit treatment, which is high in vitamin C and zinc and described as “a mega dose of antioxidants and immune-system boosting agents to help combat infections”. Results I noticed how well I slept the first week after my treatment. Plus, I definitely felt more energised and hydrated. The only downside is that the effects last for only ten days. And if you aren’t a fan of needles, perhaps stick to your daily multivitamin! Shops 22 and 23, Eden Meadows Shopping Centre 011 524 0991 5 Medaesthetique.co.za f Mode De Vie, Medical & Aesthetics

Many celebrities have raved about the purported benefits of IV vitamin infusions – from increased energy to potential anti-aging benefits. I tried Reviv Wellness’s signature vitamin infusion, Megaboost, which promises to balance, refresh and energise the body. The process was virtually painless – a simple prick to the arm and then waiting for about 30 minutes while the infusion took place. Results A definite feeling of well-being and increased energy. However, one does wonder how much this has to do with the actual infusion or a possible placebo effect. The jury’s still out. Our bodies can only absorb so much at one time and tend to excrete any excess when it comes to vitamins. Also, one needs to have a vitamin deficiency in order to derive maximal benefit from this type of infusion. Midori Eco Salon It’s a little tricky finding the right entrance to Green Park in Sandton, an energy-conserving building that promotes green living and is the home of Midori Eco Salon, but once you’re in it’s almost too easy to sit back, relax and enjoy the pampering. Midori, which means “green” in Japanese, was designed with only recyclable and organic materials, and uses eco-friendly practices wherever possible, so you can know that you’re being kind not only to yourself but also to the planet each time you visit. I decided to try out the nail bar, as my tips were in desperate need of attention. The treatment kicked off with a soothing hand and foot soak and scrub, which left my skin feeling luxuriously silky. Next I got to pick the colour for my nails. Out of all the salons I’ve visited, Midori offers the widest range of gel colours, with over 80 from which to choose. I settled on a subtle pink. The doctor's in town! Meet Dr Demartini and master your money

Dr John Demartini is a human behaviour specialist, educator, author and the founder of the Demartini Institute 5 Drdemartini.com f Dr John Demartini

Stop fear from standing in your way Being aware of and wisely interpreting seven common fears can help you reach your full potential Spiritual Fear of breaking the morals or ethics of a spiritual authority can stop you from doing what you love. Mental Fear of not being intelligent enough can keep you from attempting exciting challenges. Realise that you can do whatever you dream, at your current level, and incrementally grow to the next. Vocational Fear of failure can immobilise you. Instead, use this fear to refine goals that need more attention and planning. Financial Fear of not making – or losing – money can limit you. If you value money, save and are committed to doing whatever it takes to succeed, you’ll build wealth. Familial Fear of losing loved ones. Many feel that if they follow their passion they might lose the respect of someone close. Understand that if you both have independent lives, you’ll both still function. Social Fear of being rejected by someone you assume is more socially powerful than you. Never sacrifice the eternal for the transient. Allow yourself to be the hero and the villain. To be great is to be misunderstood. Physical Fear of ill health, disease or death can bring them on. Not living your dreams will kill you quicker than anything else. For greater resilience, do what you love and focus on an immortal goal. Having fears means you’re growing and challenging yourself beyond your comfort zones. Identify your fear, bring it to completion and then walk through it. Walk through the darkened doorway where fear lurks and actively turn on the light. H

Make your workout fit your personality If you’re competitive, choose a goal-driven activity like tennis; if you enjoy playing, dancing or ice-skating are good picks; socialites can try a brisk walk at the shopping mall; and loners may prefer home workouts or quiet walks.

Comfy and so stylish, “workout shoes” are definitely no longer reserved for the gym. We’ve been attracted to bright colours recently so the hot-pink Skechers Go Flex Walk footwear has caught our eye. Exercise first thing in the morning As much as you tell yourself you’ll go to the gym in the evening, it’s generally a better tactic to get your workout out of the way as early in the day as possible. Pack your bag and choose your outfit the night before so you won’t have any excuses. eetroot is such a versatile root vegetable, and is absolutely delicious too! Its natural sweetness makes it the perfect addition to many dishes, for extra flavour and colour. Beetroot is high in fibre, and is also a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Plus, it can improve athletic performance by enhancing muscle oxygenation during long-term endurance exercise. So, load up on beetroot! I like to combine my beetroot with a healthy fat such as tahini because it lowers the glycaemic index of the vegetable itself, given that beetroot is higher in natural sugar than other vegetables. This delicious Middle Eastern inspired dish is a great way to incorporate beetroot into your diet.

Roasted Spiced Beetroot with Macadamia-Tahini Dressing Prep time 30 minutes | Serves 4 Ingredients For the beetroot 5 large beets, sliced into rounds 1 tsp ground cumin ¼ cup za’atar (thyme, sumac and sesame seed mixture) ¼ cup olive oil 3 sprigs fresh rosemary 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar ¼ cup macadamia nuts, crushed and dry-roasted

Pink salt and black pepper, to taste

For the dressing 4 Tbsp macadamia nut butter ½ cup tahini 1½ tsp dried mint 4 Tbsp olive oil ¼ tsp pink salt

28

Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

Method 1 Lightly grease baking tray with olive oil spray. Spread sliced beets evenly across baking tray. 2 In a small bowl, combine olive oil, za’atar, cumin, salt and pepper, and whisk vigorously until thoroughly combined. 3 Using a basting brush, spread the spiced olive oil evenly over sliced beets, making sure to coat well. Place coated beets into the oven and roast for 20 minutes at 180⁰C.

4 Prepare dressing by adding macadamia butter, tahini, dried mint, salt and olive oil to a blender and blending on high speed for approximately 2–3 minutes, until thick dressing forms. 5 In a medium-sized frying pan, dry-roast macadamia nuts on high heat for 3–4 minutes, until lightly browned. Remove from heat and allow to cool. 6 Remove beetroot from the oven and place on serving dish. Drizzle with macadamiatahini dressing and enjoy alongside your favourite main. H

Acrobranch is a treetop bopping experience for families who want to switch off the TV, get off the couch and do something different outdoors – and above ground. Perfect for a family outing, team build or birthday, each course is carefully designed with a variety of obstacles including zip lines, Tarzan swings, nets, bridges and many more activities which gradually take you from tree to tree.

he good news is that in 2016 it’s never been easier to go out and experience what Joburg’s nightlife has to offer. With the various modes of transport available to us today, there really is no reason for any of us to get behind the wheel of a car if we’re clinking glasses and in the mood to squeak some takkie.

Words Carly Ritz

Here are some of the easy and safe ways to get around Joburg if you’re having a few afterwork drinks, wining and dining on a date or just don’t feel like driving.

Uber Top of the charts at the moment, no one can touch Uber’s success right now. Uber’s tagline really does say it all: the company has become “everyone’s private driver”. There’s no doubt

that Uber has changed the way people travel globally and disrupted the transport industry and, here in Joburg, it’s no exception. entertainment a cuppacomedy Household names in local comedy, Jason, Nic, Donovan and Kate Goliath generally need no introduction. But for those who don’t know (#ClearlyNotLivingYourBestLife), here’s a quick backstory: three guys with jokes – and a lady to keep them in check – decided to follow their dream to make people laugh till they cry. And then laugh again. And, well, they’ve done just that. From their successful flagship show, AWEdnesday Comedy Jam, which has headlined some of South Africa’s most hilarious comedians since October 2011, to a string of accolades and awards for their own work and some laughout-loud corporate MC gigs, the Goliath and Goliath team have captured their audiences’ hearts for the past four years. And now they’re after their stomachs. Comedy has a new home With a well-established brand four years down the line, the team needed to shake things

up, says Kate. It’s dangerous to get too comfortable and it was time for phase two. So it’s been all hands on deck for the last few months getting everything ready for their brandnew venture: a dualexperience coffee spot and entertainment venue, Roast Café and The Goliath Comedy Club in association with The Venue at Melrose Arch. A warm and comfy home for fellow comedians, friends and fans. In what really is a #WishItWasMyIdea collaborative coup, Goliath and Goliath joined forces with Niki and Tony Raciti of The Venue, who have run successful entertainment venues for three decades, and renowned restaurateur Foti Drakopoulos of the iconic Walnut Grove in Sandton City. “We’re strong believers in letting people do what they do best,” says Nic. “We do comedy, that’s what we do,” adds Jason. So in the spirit of doing what they do best, you won’t find the Goliath guys in the kitchen – which is why the food is so good, quips Nic. Apparently Jason cooks when he needs to eat and Donovan is a health nut with a taste for wholesome foods (Banting menu coming soon). But they’re keeping to their own lane. It’s Niki, Tony and Foti who’ll bring the best of the best in the service industry to the table. From the tastiest food, cake and coffee to the most happening venue with its open, warm and inviting space to the best of local comedy, everything at Roast Café and The Goliath Comedy Club is designed to make you happy. (Check out the happiness jars spread around the venue too.)

Goliath and Goliath take centre stage The Goliath and Goliath team are brand architects with a solid grip on what their audiences want. “Take over 30s who aren’t into clubs, for example. There’s not much entertainment for them to enjoy. We’re offering a place to have a great meal, watch good comedy and enjoy live music (coming on Sundays). Basically, it’s the perfect place to take a lady out on a date,” says the evercharming Jason. (PS: ladies, he’s single and so is Donovan.) Goliath and Goliath are ready to disrupt the local entertainment and food scene on a large scale in hope of inspiring and growing the comedy industry. “We now have another stage, another audience and another opportunity to share all kinds of South African comedy,” says Kate. When asked who’s the funniest of the group, Nic nominates Kate. But not all people who make jokes at the dinner table should be on stage, she replies. As the manager of Goliath and Goliath and all their madness, we take her word for it. The comedy will kick off in March H f Roast Cafe T @Roast_Cafe

Hitting all the right notes Go back in time on a musical journey through the highs and lows of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

T

his February the Joburg Theatre brings us Bye Bye Baby – a fresh take on the story of the hugely popular American rock/pop band the Four Seasons and its frontman, Frankie Valli. From how the group formed to how they joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, all will be revealed on stage.

The show took the UK by storm in 2015, and now it’s our turn. “We’re excited about visiting South Africa and bringing the show to the people of Joburg. The dates we’ve played in the UK since the show launched last year have been unbelievable – we’ve been playing to packed houses and the response has been incredible,” says musical director Marc Ryzer. “Our singers are of an incredible vocal range and quality. Lead singer Jamie Ledwith sings in the same range as Frankie Valli (falsetto) – if you close your eyes, it really could be him,” he adds. From their early beginning in the 50s, when Frankie first joined Four Seasons, Bye Bye Baby celebrates the band’s greatest hits like “Beggin’”,

“Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Let’s Hang On”, “Who Loves You”, “Bye Bye Baby”, “Can’t Take my Eyes off You” and “Fallen Angel”, culminating in a superb grand finale medley of even more top tunes.

The combination of a vast catalogue of hits, snappy choreography, a four-piece live band, and world-class vocals and harmonies makes for an unforgettable night of nostalgia. We can’t wait to sing along to some of our favourite Four Seasons songs (many featured in cult movies like Dirty Dancing and Grease)! SUBCULTURE SPOTLIGHT

The Joburg tech scene

F

eeding your inner nerd doesn’t have to be limited to surfing the internet or playing video games. Joburg is filled with fun tech-related things for any geek. Here’s my pick of some of the best:

Smallville Comics 2.0

Imagine every superhero and villain in one place? That’s Smallville Comics 2.0. The original shop has become a staple in Alberton City, but the far bigger flagship store (at 41 St Aubyn Road, Alberton) will really take comicbook fans’ breaths away. It’s packed full of comics and geeky collectables. There’s also a reading nook that allows you to immerse yourself in your favourite comics while cuddling up with a hairy Chewbacca teddy. The store also hosts regular events such as free comic-book days and foosball

Gold Reef City’s Science Exploratory

Joburg’s theme park is no longer just about highadrenaline thrills and candy floss. Gold Reef City’s science centre, the Exploratory, will keep any curious mind occupied for hours. Covering a host of topics from physics and chemistry to medicine, the centre is an ideal spot to get hands-on with the foundations of the technology we love. The best part? Entrance is free with your theme park ticket! 5 Tsogosun.com/gold-reef-city-casino

The Johannesburg Planetarium

You probably remember visiting the Planetarium, located at Wits University, with your school as a kid. It’s still there and just as awesome for a bit of stargazing and education on astronomy. The shows are extremely enjoyable and the commentators make them interesting for even the non-nerd. Tickets cost R45 each for adults and, a quick tip to

his is one gallery that’s almost more impressive than the artworks it displays. The eye-catching elliptical building, which was designed to generate attention among passers-by, was inspired by nature and a love for our city – it’s “a celebration of art, architecture and living in Johannesburg”. Cool fact Construction of Circa needed to take place virtually by hand to achieve the complex shape’s high degree of uniformity. sightseeing Mandela Bridge like you’ve never seen it before

Although it's been an unmissable part of Joburg's city skyline for more than a decade, how well do you really know SA's world-famous bridge?

1

It links some of the hippest places to see and be seen NMB is slab-bang in the middle of Joburg’s inner-city playground. With Braamies’s hot and happening places to eat, dance and socialise on the one side and the gettingcooler-by-the-moment The Sheds@1Fox on the other, NMB has serious street cred.

2

40

It’s on arty turf Not only are cultural big names like the Market Theatre, Joburg Theatre (plus resident Joburg Ballet company), The Dance Factory and Constitution Hill all within walking distance, but NMB is also surrounded by street art. Look for, among so many others, the 560 carved wooden heads on plinths throughout Newtown and downtown Jozi, the three-storey-high Banner of Hope steel Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

3

It has celebrity status NMB is apparently one of the most photographed locations in the city, day and night. Yes, it’s the place for sunset promenades, photo shoots and Instagrams against the distinct urbanscape. It’s also a highly indemand location for events. One of the most memorable was fashion designer David Tlale’s 2011 Joburg Fashion Week statement – the parading of his “Made In The City” collection along the full length of the bridge. A model for every year of Mandela’s life (92 at the time) was sent down what’s now being called the longest catwalk in SA’s fashion history.

Bragging rights We were already fans, but after coming across these Mandela Bridge facts and figures, we’re simply speechless: Having taken two years (and about R38 million) to complete, it was opened in 2003 – by Nelson Mandela himself At 284m long, 42m high at the north pylon and 27m high at the south pylon, it’s the largest bridge of its kind in southern Africa It’s a heavyweight About 4 000m3 of concrete, 500t of reinforcing steel and 1 000t of structural steel went into its construction It crosses 46 operational railway lines It’s quite a thrill seeing the trains going by underneath Designed by Danish architectural firm Dissing+Weitling, it’s won many awards, including a biggie: the South African Institute of Civil Engineering award for technical excellence It’s socially conscious In 2012 it was lit up in bright pink for a week to raise awareness about breast cancer H Sources Southafrica.info; Southafrica.net Love the Mandela Bridge as much as we do? oburg has more than 2 300 parks and over 10 000 hectares of green experiences to comfort and inspire. With more than 10-million trees (4 million in private gardens through the suburbs and about 2.5 million in parks, cemeteries, nature reserves, conservation areas and on pavements), Joburg looks like a rainforest on satellite pictures. We’ve rounded up six places you can escape to for some green therapy. Albert’s Farm, Northcliff A cityscape merges with a small piece of undeveloped park. Here there are beautiful, restful walks through indigenous grasses and a spring feeds a small dam. Walk in groups during weekdays. 5 Greymont.co.za/alberts-farm Delta Park, Blairgowrie A lovely multi-use park that contains one of the country’s best environmental centres, a bird sanctuary and scout-training grounds. For birdwatchers, this is a great spot. Walk in groups or try a parkrun. 5 Parkrun.co.za/delta Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Emmarentia A popular, well-used park. Pleasant for family picnics, with tearoom, several dams and gardens to visit. Best walked in groups during weekdays, with dogs allowed in the southern part of park. 5 Jhbcityparks.com

Melville Koppies (Central, West and East), Melville Beautiful pristine koppie, owls that call to their young, butterflies that sway in the breeze – all right in the middle of the city. There are three sections to the koppie; walks can be taken as one, or together. There’s controlled access to Melville Koppie Central, which is open on specific days each month. 5 Mk.org.za Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort This botanical garden consists of a network of paths in a safe and tranquil environment, over 220 species of birds, including the magnificent Verreaux’s eagle, and indigenous gardens. Here you can walk for as long as you like, or just sit and contemplate the beauty of the gardens. For the more energetic there’s also the 3.5km JCI Geological Hiking Trail, which, although fairly short, is quite strenuous, as it ascends to the top of the Witpoortjie Waterfall. Walk in groups on the trail. f Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden South Africa

Why we need trees Trees aren’t just pretty, they have a real environmental function They control the greenhouse effect: when heat rises from the tar, trees act as a natural coolant Carbon dioxide emitted from cars is taken in by trees and converted into oxygen An acre of trees, on average, can store 2.6t of carbon (pollution) annually and generate enough oxygen daily for 18 people A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year In city areas without tree cover, streets and parking lots can raise air temperatures to 350C. Such “heat islands” can cause cities to be 5–90C warmer than surrounding areas Trees also reduce noise levels H Source City Parks and Zoo 5 Jhbcityparks.com

The Wilds, Houghton A stunning koppie with old original stone paths where you can forget the city – unless you raise your eyes and look at the magnificent views of the Hillbrow Tower and Ponte. At the top of the koppie rests a sundial and a greenhouse; time waits for only the sun. It’s close to the city centre so walking in groups is recommended. 5 Jhbcityparks.com Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

The perfect spot to indulge in such views would have to be the Haute Cabrière Restaurant. There’s a terrace dining area where you can sip their famous Pierre Jourdan and enjoy gratifying cuisine. We tried the Normandy mussels served with cider, leek cream, garlic and gremolata – the best we’ve ever eaten! Rich and succulent, complemented by a glass of Pinot Noir. For mains, we highly recommend the coconut vegetable curry, which is light and flavorsome, or the pasta du joir, which is made fresh daily. Making the most of the view, we just had to stay for dessert – so we tried one of each. Almost too pretty to eat, each mouthful is a taste sensation. And because their menu revolves around seasonal availability, each dish is fresh and innovative. There’s also a tasting room, which offers guests an exclusive wine experience. And cellar tours. So be sure to book off a few hours for your visit. 5 Cabriere.co.za Ryan’s Kitchen If it’s contemporary South African cooking you’re after then this is your place. Ryan’s Kitchen explores unique flavours, creates

culinary masterpieces and takes each guest on an adventure sure to get the taste buds tingling. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable; a lounge type of setup where all tables feel like “Chef ’s tables”. This allows guests to mingle, and celebrate a united love of food. We recommend you order six small plates to share between two. A tapas-style dining experience. There are ten options to choose from – however, you can’t leave without tasting the beetroot and truffle tapioca pudding. The most delectable flavour combinations. Another popular dish is the seared tuna with fennel kimchi, lemon and rooibos jelly, and a light ginger granite. Proudly South African of course! If you’re not quite the sharing type then perhaps the rabbit leg will get your vote. Or opt for the impala loin served in a seaweed crust. Now there may not be enough space in your stomach to fit in all of this, but we assure you every bite you do eat is worth it. Not only is its food tasty but another reason to love Ryan’s Kitchen is the chef ’s playfulness with ingredients. Quite simply, delicious gastronomic exploration. 5 Ryanskitchen.co.za H

The Vitara 2 – it lives Sounds like the sequel to a thrilling adventure movie: “it lives”. Well, if that’s what you were thinking you wouldn’t be off the mark. It all began in 1988 – the year Suzuki launched the first Vitara, a compact yet versatile SUV. Introduced a decade later, its bigger brother, the Grand Vitara (which incidentally saw its sequel, the Grand Vitara 2, arriving in 2015) now sees a reprise of the Vitara nameplate and has a smaller sibling to run alongside it. The Vitara hits the road running – packed with value; wearing a trendy tracksuit to boot. It plays a game of urban jungle crossover among its competitors, the Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, Citroen Cactus and Ford EcoSport. The Vitara shows its lead over its competitors specifically in the safety category – being the safest car within its class, scoring a full five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test, with seven airbags across the entire range. Putting its best foot forward is done via either a 2WD or AllGrip, 4WD drivetrain. The Vitara is driven by Suzuki’s mainstay 1.6l (86kW) engine and geared via either a five-speed manual or fresh-out-the-box six-speed automatic. Billed as a compact city crossover with off-road capabilities, the Vitara is an ideal family vehicle for those who enjoy adventure. Although research would suggest that only 7% of customers would be looking to actually venture off-road, it’s nice to know the Vitara is capable of doing so.

Words Daniel Calbacho T @DanielCalbacho

I had the pleasure of testing it at its launch and can confirm, off the beaten track is like a walk in the park for the Vitara. Interestingly, customers looking to purchase in this category place 45% of their purchasing decisions on a car’s looks. A picture says 1 000 words. You decide if those words speak to you. Feature-wise, the Vitara is handsomely appointed: an MP3/WMAcompatible multi-speaker audio system including a CD player, as well as USB connectivity. conferencing &events Sandton Convention Centre

A date on Joburg’s events and economic calendar Meetings Africa 2016 – Africa’s largest business and tourism services and destination marketing convention – takes place in the heart of Sandton this month, with business contingents from across the globe vying for strategic partnerships to put Africa on the world’s economic map

I

n its 11th year, Meetings Africa this year again highlights business leaders’ role in tourism’s services, events, accommodation, hospitality and marketing sectors. This, the biggest event of its kind on the continent, also affirms Joburg’s position as leading events city. This “meet and trade” marketplace represents the wealth of these sectors and the promise of benefits for revenue flow to these sectors and the national coffers. People directed initiatives The live countdown of the days, hours, minutes and seconds on the small digital windows on the Meetings Africa 2016 website shows how each tick of a second brings closer this date for critical business partnerships to transform Africa for its people – and right here in the continent’s richest square kilometre, the Sandton central business, shopping and leisure district. The event is held at the prestigious Sandton Convention Centre, adjacent to the city’s largest 3, 4 and 5 star accommodation complex (more than 5 000 rooms), and is a showcase for this country and the continent’s business acumen.

This year’s theme is Advancing Africa Together, a continuation of South African Tourism’s Pan-African business and tourism campaign: Rise with Us. Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

This year’s agenda looks at the events industry’s potential to boost national spend through business and leisure tourism. Also, there’s an emphasis on green events initiatives, and ways to create jobs and alleviate poverty, specifically through the hospitality, accommodation and leisure industry’s involvement with business. For Joburg, it’s a time to shine and enhance its reputation as a world-class events city and as a global African destination. A proud lead Meetings Africa envisages spin-offs for business and associated tourism sectors. Its pan-African and global focus on partnerships is intended to make Africa one of the world’s major economies, thereby creating employment and relieving poverty. At last year’s Meetings Africa, Rick Taylor (CEO of the Business Tourism Company) said “it’s magic” to see South Africa and Africa “work in tandem” to boost global spend and expand businesses inter-continentally as well as globally.

years ago [to] an exciting subsector on the tourism business landscape”. This is seen in the country and in Joburg’s specific commitment to service excellence in hosting global strategic events like the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, also in Durban’s hosting of the COP17 Climate Change Summit and the Brics 2013 Summit – all leading events to change the face of tourism and add to fiscal growth and job creation. “Of the 1000s of business leaders [who] come here, 40% return in the next five years as tourists, bringing their families too,” says Minister Hanekom. And the country’s events landscape looks upbeat with 177 major international association meetings secured till 2020 – an expected 250 000 delegates with an estimated R3.5 billion into the country’s coffers over the next five years. A Joburg moment Joburg is gearing up for this key event and punting its world-class destination status. Joburg Tourism Head Nabintu Petsana says that “this is a key moment for Joburg as events city”.

Now Africa’s six fastest-growing economies benefit from returns on investments through its “A beautiful city [with] excellent infrastructure equally fast-growing business events industry. … the hotels and convention centres are the best … exceed world standards [and] Looking ahead facilities [are] big enough to host up to 5 000 The spin-offs for tourism, as Minister of delegates.” Tourism Derek Hanekom said last year, have been the exponential growth of businesses in When 22–24 February Africa and the transformation of the events Where Sandton Convention Centre industry “from virtual obscurity a couple of Book Meetingsafrica.co.za H

our look Getcover

You might not have the view, but you can recreate the beautifully romantic table setting from this month’s HJ cover

A stunning vase is a must-have for all the beautiful bouquets which are prevalent at this

time of year. The stylish sculptured metallic vase caught our eye almost immediately and we knew it would make for an exquisite centrepiece. Mixed metals are all the rage right now, and we let this, as well as our love for rose gold, guide the rest of the selection process. The multi-tonal bronze table runner (which is also available in shades of turquoise) was an instant winner and perfectly complemented the aged white and rose gold tealight holders. We instantly fell in love with the laser-cut metallic bronze placemats, which have a luxurious non-slip finish that perfectly cushions the crockery on top. What’s Valentine’s Day without a little red, right? The modern metallic-finish red chargers are perfect for the month of love and held the eggshell Noritake dinner plates beautifully. With all these tones and textures already present, we thought it best to keep the cutlery simple and chose the Eetrite slimline set for its elegant simplicity and trusted quality. Whether you’re loving your singledom or are sharing the night with someone special, charge your Jamie Oliver champagne flutes with some blush bubbles and you’ll have yourself an HJ cover setting!

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

H

e’s the opinionated 5FM DJ we can’t get enough of. Yes, since saying bye-bye to Cape Town and settling down in Joburg almost two years ago, Nick Hamman’s hit the airwaves in a big way. From the hilarious Hamman Time Hotline clips to Nick’s classic one-liners, with Hamman Time cranked up loud we stay entertained and stimulated every weekday morning from 8–10. We dragged Nick away from his radio gig to get his take on Joburg living, local music and his “coolest kid on the block” title… You love Joburg because… It’s a city where if you’re willing to say yes to adventures and opportunities, you’ll never be comfortable, but always excited. What have you learnt about yourself during your journey as a DJ? DJing has taught me that I love people. I love knowing what it is that connects us and makes us human. People are calling you the “coolest kid on the block”. What do you think about that title? It’s flattering, I guess. You can’t teach “cool” and even if you are, you can never appear to be trying too hard. How do you stay inspired by music? One of my favourite quotes about music is, “The best music is that which I have not yet heard”. There will always be more songs than I’ll ever have time to play or hear. That keeps me excited. If you had to choose three people to have dinner with, dead or alive, who would they be? Allen Ginsberg, Kendrick Lamar and Jake the Dog.

Joburg s a city where if you re willing to say’ yes to adventures and opportunities, you ll never be comfortable, but always excited ’

Hello Joburg • February 2016 • Gohello.co.za

Three things you didn’t know about Nick Hamman 1 He’s a classically trained muso who’s been part of the jazz scene for over a decade 2 He has a degree in philosophy and politics 3 He’s a pretty decent drummer Tomorrowland – yay or nay? Yay! It’s on the bucket list. Local music is unstoppable because… We have something the world is craving and their ears are finally open. What are you looking forward to in 2016? Working harder and being better than I was in 2015. Also, all the music I still haven’t heard. H
