People of Joburg!

Jade Roberts

What does Joburg mean to you. As big as the city is, more than ever before it’s more connected and accessible, with its streets so diverse and full of life. When people tell me there is nothing to do in Joburg, I used to sit there astounded at such comments but now I know that that’s my cue to start sharing my passion and open their minds up to the possibly of embracing all it has to offer. What inspired you to start your own blog? My blog, WriteStyle, came to life out of me wanting to share my thoughts, using my words, in my style. What started as a hobby has turned into something that is now one of my identifying marks, and has presented me with more fantastic opportunities than I could have ever imagined. Joburg style is… Whatever you want it to be. It’s where the hipsters meet the urbanites, where the foodies meet the sports fans, where the shopping enthusiasts meet the music lovers. Anything goes,

5:00 As I photographer I start my Saturday off by chasing light, literally. So I am up at 5 to get ready with a charged camera and gear to be out the house at 5:30 to catch one of Jozi’s beautiful sunrises 6:00 A short trip with my likeminded Instagrammer friends to a location we choose during the week, gets us there just before the sunrise to experience South Africa and capture the moments through our lenses. 9:00 It’s been a while since we have been up so it’s time for a pit stop and some good local coffee. When in town, we stop at Joburg’s finest and best java brewery, Father Coffee. 9:30 I’m hungry, so it’s only a matter of steps before we I head to Neighbourgoods Market to grab a delicious breakfast. 15:00 It’s time now to head out to either Melville or Greenside for drinks with friends. This is where I love spending my time, with my friends talking nonsense and catching up after the hectic week. 18:30 It’s time to catch up with some important people in my life, and what a better place to do it than the legendary 4th avenue Parkhurst. My favourite place to dine is a beautiful place called Coobs, an eclectic contemporary bistro that serves delicious food. 20:00 It’s off to Sandton City where after dinner a good movie with my friends can be seen. It will either be a blockbuster Marvel or DC movie we have been waiting for, or a random group decision based on the movie posters first impression.

22:30 The nights activities are not over, and like the majority of my friends, we like to maximize spending time together so it’s off to the nearest restaurant open to have a laugh and some coffee, and talk about the day we just had. We usually only leave when the waitrons kick us out at closing time! 00:00 Bed time, after a very soul satisfying day of picture taking and friend time.

Nelson Mandela Square - Discover. Experience. Indulge

T

he newly transformed Nelson Mandela Square was revealed last month to select key media at an exclusive pre-launch al fresco dinner on the square. VIP guests enjoyed a lavish three course “platter to table” dinner under the stars. The decadent platters provided guests with an opportunity to discover a sneak taste of the Square’s restaurants as each was prepared and provided by some of the Centre’s key restaurant tenants; Butcher Shop & Grill, Hard Rock Café, Pappas, Wangthai, Tasha’s Café and Remo’s showcased their signature dishes while guests were serenaded by local musicians.

The tasteful transformation of one of South Africa’s iconic Centre’s is evident as Nelson Mandela Square now boasts cross vaulted ceilings, double volume glass facades, skylights, marble floors and numerous other luxurious finishes. An investment of just over R300 million has seen the Centre being entirely renovated in line with international style and standards. Brand new fashion brands are now available to shoppers and include Luminance, Thomas Pink, La Martina and Forever 21, which have seen the fashion-forward flocking to try on the trends since their opening. In addition, Hamley’s – the world renowned, heritage rich toy store, will now call the new Nelson Mandela Square home. H www.nelsonmandelasquare.co.za

Tech Goodies for the New Year G

Start your New Year off with an organised Gmail account

mail is the go to email provider for most of us these days. Many businesses have also set up Google accounts and run their business through the search engine giant. The one thing I always hated about Gmail was how disorganised it seemed. You would need to scroll through strings of emails to find the content you were looking for. With the New Year rolling in here is a few quick tips to ensuring your mail account is far more organised. When you log in to the Gmail account go to settings wheel on the right hand corner, select settings and scroll down to Conversation view and switch it OFF. You will now have individual emails rather than long threads. The next step is to set your email account out so that you can see your emails AND the content of the mail. This particular service is actually in Beta but still easy enough to access. Follow the same steps: The settings wheel > settings > select labs. Once in Labs scroll down to Preview Panes and enable. Now you have a split screen very similar to Outlook and other mail clients. How cool? There is also a great way to create folders and sort your emails in to a more organised system. When you open Gmail just use the labels and create new ones such as “Facebook notifications” or “Newsletters” and then follow the necessary prompts to create a more organised system.

dining out Moyo- Africa’s luxury restaurant H

ello Joburgers with the festive season fast approaching comes new and exciting things to enjoy about our city. One of them has to be the magical Moyo restaurant in Melrose Arch. We are ashamed to admit it, however we only visited the Moyo restaurant when it initially opened in Norwood in 1998 and since then have not been back, until a few weeks ago. Innovative and inventive the restaurant has managed to remain contemporary, swanky and traditionally African of course. Moyo caters for tourists and locals and because it is in the center of the city, in the affluent suburb of Melrose Arch, it is fit for royalty. Walking towards the restaurant into the hustle and bustle of the arch, you cannot help but notice the soulful vibe, the always African, the colorful and lively energy exuding from the restaurant. Inside a unique African dining experience waits: colorful costumes, fancy footwork of dancers, songs sung by the wishy-washy ladies who delight with an African hand washing and face painting ceremony. It’s special and unusual in the most delightful of ways.

Our city today is full of an array of restaurant choices so why Moyo? Firstly the restaurant is charming and boasts an effortless African inspired elegance. Then there is the joy and laughter from the waiters who carry themselves with poise and grace and always manage to have a smile on their face (the only way us Africans know how). The incredible team at Moyo, combined with the appealing cuisine ensures a memorable dining experience, a blend of African culture and a strong reminder of who we are and what makes our culture exceptional. Now lets delve into the juicy bits. Moyo are committed to providing high quality food to their customers and their menu allows for a sensation of tastes. The fried mopane worms- deep-fried in a spicy seasoning are very tempting but we had the platter also with a savor of flavors. Marinated olives, chili spiked hummus, tomato salad, mini pita pockets, feta and tabbouleh and intriguing crocodile tail pies. When it comes to the brave, these pies wont disappoint. Diced crocodile tail in a creamy mustard filling, baked in puff pastry and presented with a moreish pineapple and orange salsa and a rocket and red onion salad. An absolute must try! Oh

and the calamari enhanced by the caramelisation in molasses served with mint and harissa sauce is just yummy! As for the main course well the options are endless Joburgers. Calling all carnivores! The Oudtshoorn Ostrich salad is light and delicate served with a slight honey and mustard dressing and is ideal for the ladies while the meat lovers can indulge in their carefully selected meat (including venison, boerewors, pork ribs, Ostrich fillet) or even enjoy a gorgeous tagine or potjie. By the way no African experience would be complete without a side of spongy, creamy pap or their soft cooked samp and speckled beans. (We could eat bowls of that all night long and be satisfied). Ending off the meal you just cannot leave without indulging in the Rooibos tea Crème Brule. The flavors compliment one another and your palate is left with a creamy sensation. Local is definitely luxury and one way we now know how to acquire this indulgence and authentic experience is at Moyo Melrose Arch. A truly flawless, intimate experience. And if like us, you have a love for local cuisine, it’s the perfect spot! H

hen you have people coming over for dinner there is no excuse not to have a gorgeous bottle of vino (or three). Choosing the right one can elevate and enhance the evening, creating a tranquil ambience and bringing a touch of flair. So if you’re serving quality wines to South Africans we thought its best you get all the right details and pick the correct wines to woo your guests.

Labri Affinity R110 2013 A beautiful ink black, dark plum colour. This wine is known for being exceptionally complex with cherries, plums and cassis and mixed spice on the nose. Elegant and spicy, it’s delectable.

Labri Syrah R110 2012 Vibrant in color and flavor. This Ruby coloured wine entices with an explosive mix of violets, mint, thyme and white pepper. The entry is juicy and bright leading to a fresh palate.

Uitkyk – Carlonet Carbernet Sauvignon R115 2011 Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes this wine has a vanilla oak spice background and gains character with further cellaring.

Grand Vin de Glenelly R140 2009 The Grand Vin de Glenelly is the signature red blend of the estate. Naturally fermented and matured in French oak for 18 months. The wine offers an elegant complex bouquet developing aromas of cassis and spicy plums, cedar and tobacco with notes of toast in the background.

Kloovenburg – Chardonnay 2014 This wine is a savvy and elegant way to start out the evening. Chardonnay with a golden yellow color and layers of grapefruit and pineapple on the nose. R54 for the Unwooded and R74 for the Barrel Fermented De Bos - Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc R80 2014 This glorious tropical fruit and vibrant lime flavoured wine gets my vote! Perfect with fresh salads.

Babylonstoren - Mourvèdre Rosé R89 2015 Babylonstoren, need we say more? With raspberries touches and hints of rose petal to tickle your taste buds its no wonder this wine pairs well with light fish dishes. Babylonstoren has also recently opened a guided cellar tour on their farm.

Allée Bleue – Starlette Shiraz Rosé R59 2015 Born out of Franshoek this Rosé is wonderful and fresh and is a well-balanced, easydrinking, cheerful Rosé that pairs well with salmon.

Groote Post Sauvignon Blanc ±R85 2015 The newly released 2015 vintage is definitely one of the estate’s stand-out vintages. A beautifully fresh and fruity wine.

It plays a pivotal role in our community, so we sat our tuchus down, hunted and tasted, and found our top five in and around the city of gold. Here they are in no particular order. Inside the Illovo, Thrupps Centre is this adorable, quaint café style restaurant. If you’re after affordable food that’s quick, easy and delicious then this is just the spot! The best news is they serve ‘anytime breakfast’ and their grilled halloumi, avo and pesto wrap is light, tasty and packed with flavor. Savoury and sweet, worth a try Care for a crack of black pepper on your strawberries? Some salt, maybe? For anyone who has sat down for some fine dining in Jozi over the past few months, this offer may not sound that strange. That is because more and more chefs are introducing savoury elements to their sweet dishes. The idea is definitely not new, and like many culinary trends it may suddenly disappear before we have completely forgotten about our new year’s resolutions, but for now it is highly popular. The thinking behind this trend is that something salty, bitter or savoury keep the sweetness from overwhelming your palette. At the same time the contrast helps you to enjoy the sweet flavours so much more and, as is often the case with haute cuisine, it pushes your taste boundaries a bit. At roots restaurant we have been playing with aubergine and beetroot puree as a natural way of introducing these contrasting flavours. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are cooking up some new ideas for the first new menus of 2016. So whether of not you have the chance to sit down for a degustation menu meal or are dreaming up some new ideas in front of your own stove, do not shy away from contrasting flavours in your desserts. You may just land a winner! H By Chris Tustian, Executive Chef roots at Forum Homini. Hello Joburg • January 2016 • www.gohello.co.za

HelloRecommends

A Jozi Evening Experience beginning at Bounce Inc. followed by a dinner at Life Grand Café Waterfall Restaurant

T

he final Hello Recommends evening for 2015 completed the year with a whole lot of exhilaration. All our foodie favorites and influencers were elated with excitement and enthusiasm. Our VIP experience was about to blow their socks off. The purpose of the evening was to once again showcase the newly launched GoHello app. Revolutionary in its field and constantly evolving with our city and its people, the app showcases the very best restaurants, hotels and leisure activities in Jozi. You can also rate and review each site. The evening took place on Thursday December 10th. We were all jumping for joy as we entered the first leg of our journey at Bounce- Free Jumping Revolution in Waterfall Lifestyle Centre. Our love affair began with shooting some hoops (a slamdunk was almost in our grasp) followed by a rather competitive game of dodge ball and finally ending off with airborne jumping. The rush of Bounce is infectious; you free yourself and become immersed in childlike fun. We couldn’t help but smile with laughter, yell till our tummies burst and follow our instincts to Bounce.

A bold move to place a pack of Joburgers together and expect them not to get bloodthirsty for fun! Food brings to light the hidden secrets of the heart so after we had worked up a roaring appetite, we headed next door to Life Grand Café Waterfall. We credit this comfortable, luxurious space with the people and electrifying interaction amongst guests. It’s the ideal spot to mingle, spark interest in food and embark on a culinary adventure. Our sixteen favourite Joburgers were in for a treat! The secret ingredient is one heaping teaspoon of joy and this is exactly what Life delivered. We were welcomed with a refreshing watermelon granita, which certainly got our taste buds tingling. We were then all indulged with a lavish three-course dinner. Starting with tantalizing, artisan tapas including haloumi slices, grilled calamari, chicken skewers, juicy prawns and delicious freshly baked breads. For main there was a selection of bound fillet, seafood paella or lemon & thyme chicken espatada. Certainly spoiled for choice. And then the cherry on top, the grand finale, dessert, which was a selection of assiette or cheese, decedent chocolate baked cheesecake, sesame crusted Brie with berry compote and a divine blue cheese phyllo barrel with pineapple chutney. Mouthgasmic!

All our guests were wowed by the selection of foods from the set menu. This restaurant never forces itself to be inspired and it was the perfect setting for our final Hello Recommends 2015. And just when our guests thought the excitement was over, The House of J.C Le Roux spoiled them with their signature Scintilla Vintage Reserve, they also each received a box of imported Italian Baci Perugina Chocolates and a pamper voucher from You Bar Nail & Skin Salon in Illovo. So what are you waiting for Hello Joburgers? Make a note in your diary to look out for our next Hello recommends evening, they will be a monthly treat where we host our beloved culinary connoisseurs. Cheers to many more Hello Recommends evenings!

Seven festive fat-busting tips to get you back in shape

T

he festive season is a time to indulge in all those glorious goodies that are far too sinful to enjoy year-round. Come December, the dedication to healthy eating and daily gym sessions comes to a standstill, and is replaced by the urge to devour every butter-centred, or chocolate-covered thing in sight. But there are ways to survive the aftermath of the festive season binge. While giving in to temptation over the holidays is nothing short of a cake walk, returning to a healthy lifestyle in the New Year is far more challenging. In the spirit of the New Year’s resolutions you’re sure to have made, here are seven festive fat-busting tips from Skechers that you can use to get back in shape for summer.

1

30

Be strategic – Getting back on track is easier said than done, but not impossible. Consider what stands between you and achieving your goal – even if it’s something as simple as getting out of bed for a morning run – and make a few strategic adjustments. Whip out those trendy Skechers Go Flex Walk shoes from under the Christmas tree and leave them on your side of the bed. Dust off your gym gear and hang it up where it’s likely to be the very first thing you see when you open your eyes in the morning. This makes it far easier to get started with an early-morning workout, even if you’re still half asleep. Hello Joburg • January 2016 • www.gohello.co.za

if you’re feeling particularly charitable, you could donate the lot to a nearby children’s home – they’re sure to appreciate it. For those with a sweet tooth, consider eating a fruit like an apple or banana to satisfy sugar cravings without boosting the calorie count too much.

2

Clean out the pantry – Even the strongwilled find it hard to resist the snack cupboard, which is why it may be necessary to remove every source of temptation from your home. Grab a big plastic bag and clear out all those cakes and sweets, chocolates and chips. You can pass it on to a friend or neighbour, or

6

3

It’s the little things – You don’t have to run a 10km every day to get fit and healthy; there’s merit in taking things slow at first and not biting off more than you can chew. Pushing a button and waiting for the ding of an elevator, however, won’t help you lose those kilograms. Rather take the stairs - it’s about seven times more effective in burning calories than taking a lift. Take the dog out for a walk around the neighbourhood. Not only will you break a good sweat, but good ol’ Rex will love you for it.

5

Enlist a gym buddy – Some people enjoy the tranquillity of training alone, without anyone around to cause distraction. For others, staying focused and committed to a workout plan proves a little difficult. Having a gym buddy – someone to give you company at the gym or on a run – offers a support system that will better your chances of sticking to a workout routine. It can also be way more fun to have a friend to work out with, even better if it’s someone who is on a similar or slightly higher level of fitness than you are, keeping you both motivated and sufficiently challenged. It also helps to have someone along who shares your goals and understands how far you can go, as well as your absolute limit.

Track your progress – There is a range of fitness trackers on the market to help you keep your eye on the prize and your health in good order. The fitness devices and wearables available at the moment are a useful, yet slightly pricier option to the many free mobile phone tracking apps available that work just as well. With these trackers you can easily keep a record of fitness goals, how many calories you’ve burned as well as the amount of calories you’ve consumed, depending on the specific features available. Have a look at the options in your nearest tech store, or check the app store on your smart phone for the most suitable one for you.

7

Be kind to yourself – In the end it’s important to remember that there are no quick fixes to losing weight; anyone that says different is probably lying or trying to sell you something. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself to lose every last kilogram by the end of the week, or you may find yourself doing major damage to your health and well-being in the long run. The temptation to skip the gym and gorge on tasty treats over the festive period is often unavoidable, but with these great ideas to burn fat and get back in shape, everyone can start the new year on a positive note. Well, until the start of the next festive season at least. H

4

Eat, and eat well – People often confuse the word ‘healthy’ with the term ‘selfimposed torture’, but depriving your body of essential nutrients isn’t the way to go if you want to lose weight and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Eating a good breakfast everyday can actually help with weight loss. Yep, that’s right. Since the body goes without any nourishment during slumber, a healthy breakfast in the morning stimulates the metabolism and in turn helps the body work harder to burn fat. Follow this up with a light lunch and dinner, remembering to include a large portion of vegetables in both meals. Hello Joburg • January 2016 • www.gohello.co.za

TIPS FOR TRAVELLING ENTREPRENEURS

F

or many entrepreneurs travel is essential in order to conduct their business, to sell their product or service, to see clients and meet with investors. Even with the advances in technology, travel is still a reality for many. A successful and productive business trip does not happen by accident. If you’re going to get to where you’re going with the least amount of hassle and cost there are some very specific things to do to make the most of the hours you spend travelling. If you’re an entrepreneur that travels a lot here are some tips from Darlene Menzies, CEO of SMEasy, who has learnt a few secrets to being a smarter and more efficient traveler over the years.

1

Minimise the stress involved in travelling by using apps and online services: For business owners who find themselves on the road or in the air more than they’re in the office, apps and online services are designed to make your travels as hassle-free as possible - particularly for the individual who is always in need of directions or who is constantly booking another flight to yet another city.

2 44

Instead of hiring a car use services like Uber: When hiring a car the travelling entrepreneur loses precious time by having to walk across the airport from the plane to where they need to collect the car, making car rental payments, waiting for the car to be Hello Joburg • January 2016 • www.gohello.co.za

checked and, most notably, driving to their destination. Services like Uber are a far better alternative. They offer a pick up as you get off the plane, a cashless transaction and time to work in the back of the car while you are driven to your destination. There is also no danger of getting lost and you don’t have to look for parking!

3

Checking in online: For many entrepreneurs time is limited when it comes to arriving early for your flight. By checking in online 24 hours before, your boarding pass is already on your phone which can make all the difference when it comes to making or missing your flight.

your small business can compete with big business because of all the options available to improve communication as well as time management in terms of travel. If you are unsure of which app to use consult other entrepreneurs to find out what they use and what works for them. H

4

Finding accommodation using online booking services: Services like booking. com, lastminute.com and airbnb. com can save you time and save you money when travelling. Make the time to look for accommodation using these services before your flight or while you’re in the Uber and you will find the best place to suit your needs at the best price.

5

What you can do to embrace this technology: New can be scary but if you are not using technology to make your business travel as efficient as possible, it’s time to address your fears and embrace the change. By using apps and online services

motoring Kia SORENTO Kia’s Grand Tourer

T

his is KIA’s flagship vehicle. An SUV by creation; designed for versatile family action. It is also in the running for the 2016 Car of the Year title, being one of 12 finalist vying for the prestigious designation. Now three generations deep, the KIA Sorento remains a large sized family SUV although improved with each new version. Built for the road but with off road aspirations. The Sorento’s strong point is its capacity for chauffeuring precious cargo. It comfortably does so, carrying up to seven adults easily, thanks to a plush suspension set up and supple seats. Previously an advantage of purchasing a Sorento was its price. You see, it was big - on size, equipment and road presence all while selling at a fantastic price. In fact, there wasn’t much to match it in the value department. Now- as with most things in South Africaprices are increasing. Prices begin at R400K and top out at R655K. That now places the Sorento in a new league of competition, stiffer competition. In fact you could get a Land Rover Discovery Sport for the same money. But is it worth the money? It has cavernous levels of accommodation, it's comfortable to drive in, it’s super quiet while on the move and loaded with features. It comes with things like an automated tail gate, heated and cooled leather seats, a panoramic sunroof and and and... It’s loaded with features! On the move, the Sorento is driven by a choice of two engines in SA, the 2.2 turbo charged diesel or a 2.4 petrol. The diesel is mated to smooth shifting 6-speed auto while the entry-level petrol version comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Opel CORSA SPORT An ideal car: good looking, comfortable, quick, sporty, quiet, nicely appointed cabin that is packed with technological features, frugal on fuel and not too pricey to buy. These are some of the things I look for in a car. How about you? I’m sure you have additional requirements too. The list could potentially be very long. Opel have a winner in their Corsa Sport. Here’s why. Of the list above it ticks all the boxes. R260K gets you the new stylish Corsa Sport. Fitted with a punchy 1.4T – offering 110kW of power with a 0 to 100 sprint time of approx. 9.5 seconds. You get an attractive city car loaded with big car features like: automated Bi-Xenon headlights with Cornering Light Control, automated windscreen wipers, Stop Start technology, speed-dependant power steering – engaging the City Mode makes manoeuvring as light as a feather, sports seats, Advanced Park Assist, Hill start assist (no rolling back),7” touch screen, called IntelliLink. The system offers audio, technical info and telephony operation - all via the touch buttons or the Siri voice operated command. The cabin is trendy: sculptural dash layout featuring the stylish shiny black plastic, called piano black finish. The Sports seat are upholstered in a black, white and charcoal tartan fabric. The overall look? Nice, albeit not the best in its class. Performance is great, its EcoFlex engine does

a sterling job – it’s quick, quiet and reasonably economical to run (approx. 8.5l with spirited city runs). The 6-speed gearbox is pretty good – smooth with short shifts. It’s much improved over previous Opel manuals but again not class leading. On the go, the Corsa Sport offers the perfect balance between comfort, athletic muscle and spot on road height for less than perfect pole holes, speed bumps and rough road irregularities. It’s not perfect though, some highly strung jarring can be felt in the cabin over short purposeful speed bumps. On the whole and with a generalist assessment the Opal Corsa Sport is a winner. The Sport comes standard with a Service Plan – 3 years/60 000km.

High Speed driver training, BMW style Sitting in a 60 min class with the educators from Drive Alive and an Instructor from the BMW Driving Experience revealed the fact that our South African roads aren’t safe. The reasons are vast with many variables responsible for the accidents and collision rates reported. The important lesson to take home from the driving experience are the passive and active skills left with you as your prize. Following the informative visual lecture was a one-on-one session with a highly skilled BMW Driving Experience teacher. He began by introducing you to the car, one of many 335i’s which will be replaced with the high performance M3 sedan. Eye-opening are the things you take for granted, like: finding the perfect seating position, learning to use the correct angles of the road for optimal road grip, managing to maintain smooth linear movements while travelling at high speed – again for optimised handling and control of the vehicle and to understand how by breaking or accelerating you shift the weight of the car and essentially unbalance it. Driving fast sounds like fun but not when you don’t know what you’re doing - other than accelerating aggressively and trying to manage the cars loss of traction around a bend as a result. Knowledge really is power – once you learn the principles of manoeuvring the car you become closer friends- and

as a result a mutual respect blossoms and an understanding of how to optimise the relationship. A slip and slide session is conducted on the skid pad. The Collision avoidance and skid Control course is conducted in M135i, a fun and potent hatchback to experience lower speed skids and the skills to overcome these skids. The BMW Driving Experience offers a course for all drivers, six in total: Collision avoidance and Skid Control, priced at R 1 325.00, Advance High Performance Driving, priced at R3 670.00, High performance driving, at R2 875.00, Defensive Driving, at R1 520.00, Hijack Prevention, at R765.00 and Control Package priced at R2 525.00. BMW Driving Experience courses are designed to give you the edge on the road, enhance your driving performance and increase your personal safety. Whether you’ve just got your licence or you’re a seasoned driver, BMW provide a safe environment and structured guidance for you to perfect your skills. The Driving Experience prides themselves on professional instructors, exceptional vehicles and expert course design which will give you exactly the experience you’re looking for, and more. & homedecor WINNING WITH WINE & MIELE For true connoisseurs, the enjoyment of wine begins with the selection of the wine itself. The length of time you can enjoy its rich flavour depends upon how it is stored at home. The correct storage conditions of wine have a direct effect on its shelf life.

T

o this end, Miele wine units have been designed to offer ideal conditions for the long-term storage of the finest wines. Says Liam Gawne from Miele: “Miele’s range of wine units offers the optimum storage space for your fine wines – with several temperature zones that can be controlled separately, for example, for white and red wines. However, Miele wine units do not only provide professional storage conditions for the wine connoisseur, but their sleek design also allows them to stand proud a prestigious designer piece in your home.” It is important that you know the difference between a refrigerator, a wine cooler and a wine storage unit. A refrigerator and a wine cooler maintains a constant temperature for cooling or chilling wines. Wine storage units on the other hand, like Miele’s range of wine storage units, mimics the function of a cellar to provide optimum conditions for long-term in-home storage of fine wines. H

THE HISENSE CROSS DOOR SERIES Fresh and Fabulous

W

hen it comes to your kitchen, there’s no substitute for freshness. That’s why you’ll love Hisense’s new Cross Door fridge series: it not only maintains food at peak crisp condition; it’s also at the cutting edge of technology and design. That’s not surprising, given that Hisense has been keeping kitchens fresh across the globe for years. As a breakthrough newcomer to the market, the brand is all about innovative concepts that enhance South African lifestyles. However, it has also been around long enough for consumers to learn that it is as trustworthy and reliable as older players. H The Cross Door series is available in two models: the H620FI, available in inox from Pick n Pay, Hirch’s Homestores and Makro and the H560FWHG, available in white from www.makro.co.za and Hirch’s Homestores.

HISENSE PRESENTS ULED 2.0 CURVED TV FOR SUPER-LIFELIKE IMAGES

L

ocal television aficionados are in for a treat as one of the first curved ULED Ultra High Definition (UHD) models from electronics manufacturer Hisense is set to be released in South Africa.

Viewers will be able to enjoy crisp and brilliant images that provide a fantastic viewing experience thanks to the new ULED 2.0 Curved TV 55T910UWD. With a colourful, high-contrast picture in 4K UHD resolution, the 55″ (140 cm) model boasts a high dynamic contrast, 144zone local dimming, an extra-wide colour gamut and backlight scan for super-smooth moving images. The first advantage is that curved screens fill the field of vision considerably better than flat screens. Secondly, the 55T910UWD’s 4000mm radius of curvature allows for an engaging viewing experience that still delivers a wide viewing angle, thus the image appears much more natural and friendly to the eyes. In addition, curved screens focus their light towards the seating position of the viewer as opposed to scattering it around a wider area. This results in a perceived contrast that is twice as high compared to flat screens. H The 55” Hisense ULED 2.0 Curved TV 55T910UWD will be available from major retailers nationwide. Prices start from R24, 999.00 Hello Joburg • January 2016 • www.gohello.co.za

The south african flag

T

he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za
