ELLO JOBURGERS!

Nic Proxenos, chef and owner of Sophia’s Bistro in Illovo, was welcoming to his restaurant and generous with his time. He and his staff are wholeheartedly invested in giving patrons an experience at his restaurant that they won’t easily forget. I spent an afternoon chatting to Dan Sermand, one of the owners of The Orbit jazz club in Braamfontein. He was passionate in telling the story about how The Orbit came to be and the carefully thought-out concept behind the club – a concept “that would lead the way in offering the best possible creative expression platform for jazz musicians in Joburg”. I met Ayman Eshak, a co-owner of Il Barbierie in Dunkeld. This barber shop has been around for 49 years, originally started by an Italian (Antonio Folgore) and now owned by his daughter-in-law, Manuela, and Ayman. While we drank authentic Egyptian coffee, Ayman proudly explained to me the art and skill that goes into giving a ‘clean shave’. You can read about a fun show to look forward to in our feature on Joburg Theatre’s Monty Python’s Spamalot. We interview the lead actor and actress, and director. Norman Anstey, Michelle Botha and Simon James tell us what they love best about living in Joburg. For a night filled with laughter, book a ticket to this funniest musical of all time! We hope you enjoy this issue and feel inspired about all that the vibrant city in which we live has to offer. I’d love to hear from you. If you have a moment drop me an email and let me know your thoughts. Enjoy! #lovejozi

The region is also recognised as the ‘cradle of humankind’ and was first inhabited by the San and Khoikhoi people and later by people moving in from the northern parts of central Africa. In the 1800s the area gained more attention when the Transvaal Boer Republic was created. The discovery of gold and the ensuing gold rush led to the influx of fortune seekers from near and far. Today the province is still the melting pot of South Africa with people from all over the world making the province their home. With a well-developed infrastructure, Gauteng is the economic powerhouse of the country and is considered the transport hub of southern Africa. OR Tambo International Airport, which caters for 19 million passengers a year, is one of only three airports in the world offering direct flights to all continents. The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link is a state-of-the-art rail service inaugurated in 2010. Its two service lines connect OR Tambo International Airport, Sandton, Johannesburg and Pretoria. As the financial and technology centre of the country, Gauteng also has some highly acclaimed educational facilities including universities and international schools. The dry inland climate in the province is influenced largely by the high altitude of the region, which is situated on the 1500 m – 1800 m high plateau. The temperatures get hot in summer while the winters are crisp and cold with snowfalls on rare occasions. The rainfall occurs in summer when late afternoon thunderstorms are frequent.

The smallest province of South Africa is situated on the highveld plateau. It is also the most densely populated province, housing more than 22% of the country’s population and comprising six municipalities. Among them are three metropolitan municipalities: City of Tshwane (Greater Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital and the seat of the South African government), Ekurhuleni (East Rand) and the country’s business hub, the City of Johannesburg.

BUSINESS SECTORS Gold, platinum and uranium mining are the major contributors to the province’s GDP. The Witwatersrand Basin is still the greatest unmined source of gold in the world and the gold reserves there are estimated to be 30 times richer than any other goldfields in the world. The shaft of the Western Deep mine is the world’s deepest mining shaft, plunging some 3.6 km into the earth. South Africa’s only gold refinery is Rand Refinery, which is located in Germiston. Major gold mines, operated by AngloGold Ashanti mines, Gold Fields and Harmony are major employers in the area. Coal mining is also done extensively in the region around Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark. The province houses one of the world’s leading financial centres. The finance sector contributes more than 20% to the province’s GDP. In recent years, Gauteng became renowned for its highly advanced knowledge industry with the high-tech corridor between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The region is seen as being one of the top global hubs for information technology. The province also houses more than 40% the country’s biotechnology companies. The manufacturing industry is located mainly in the Ekurhuleni district, which also houses the logistics centre near OR Tambo International Airport. Well-serviced industrial estates surround this major transport hub. Light industry operations can be found in this area as well. Agricultural products are harvested mainly in the province’s West Rand. Maize, cattle and vegetables are the main income sources in this area. Western Gauteng has large-scale commercial farming, but only a small amount of agri-processing takes place in the province.

What: Perron Mexican Restaurant When: Opened 14 May Where: Illovo Junction, corner Oxford Road and Corlett Drive Slogan: We love Mexican food, we love tequila, we love you (in a strictly non Michael Jackson kinda way), come join us. How do you describe the coolest, hippest and most awesome spot to hit Jozi in 2014? Simply delve into such coolness and experience it for yourself. So what makes Perron restaurant so cool you might ask? Well firstly, it is Mexican and that’s pretty damn cool on its own, if you ask me. Secondly, there is tequila on offer, and not just any tequila, all kinds of unique and exclusive tequila. Thirdly, the desserts are just as good as the main meals (churros, mango and chili lime sorbet, yum). And finally the coolest of the cool, the crackerjack of it all: the owners who were living in London decided to open Perron whilst eating fire-roasted cheesy quesadillas. Meant to be? I think so! Lets be honest, there is no reason not to try this brand new Mexican delight. It’s the perfect time of year. It’s winter’s solstice. Picture this: warm jalapeno poppers oozing in your mouth, followed by the crunchiest home cooked tortilla crisps with spicy salsa and mushy guacamole. Mind=blown. Social on Main lately in Bryanston and you have no idea where that is – then yes, you should definitely have FOMO. Who said nothing trendy exists on that side of William Nicol? Bryanston is flexing its social muscle to give the spots in Parkhurst, Greenside and Melrose a run for their money. Social on Main is Bryanston’s newest and hottest place to be this winter so we checked it out just for you. A cocktail bar and kitchen with attitude and style, Social on Main serves some really fancy things. From infused cocktails, craft beer on draught to a large selection of some of South Africa’s finest wine, you will be spoiled for thirst quenching choice. It’s definitely not your average bar or pub. Their smoked ribs, flat breads and dry aged steaks are definitely worth tweeting about too. Like all the cool kids these days, Social on Main sources the best, fresh local produce. Everyone is raving about the Rooibos Long Island Iced tea! You have to try it. Apparently the best place to sip it is on the terrace after a long week or day at the office. Pronto Italian restaurant is always ready to serve delicious authentic meals. The Penne Amatriciana (a traditional sauce made from pancetta, tomato, chilli, rosemary and red wine) is a favourite, so is the Penne Salsiccia (fennel infused pork sausages cooked with plum tomatoes, chili, red wine and herbs). It’s their house speciality and has customers coming all the way from Pretoria for this dish. Save space for dessert. Their ice-cream is a treat - especially the peanut butter flavour – it’s home made from a “special” recipe. Another favourite dessert is the Chocolate Salami with Mascarpone – biscuity chocolate ‘salami’ studded with nuts, flavoured with espresso and served with ice-cream! A little over a year ago Pronto added a separate bar area – perfect for small private functions or for wine and tapas. Fast fact: Johannesburg was established in 1886 and six years later the first reference was made to Craighall. William Grey Rattray purchased this large area of land in 1891, naming it ‘Craighall’ after his birthplace in Blairgowrie, Scotland. The street names in Craighall are named after noble Scottish families, and the street names in Craighall Park are named after English ducal families. MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT Always look on the bright side of life!

In another coup for Joburg Theatre, Executive Producer, Bernard Jay, is thrilled to announce the South African premier production of one of the funniest musicals of all time, Monty Python’s Spamalot. Monty Python’s Spamalot is described by its writers as the hit musical, lovingly ripped off from the 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Monty Python’s huge legions of fans across the globe will not be disappointed - familiar, legendarily iconoclastic lines from the movie return regularly in this 2005 Tony Award winning Best Musical on Broadway. Part an irreverent parody of the Camelot legend of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table on their quest for The Holy Grail; part the spoof “resplendently silly new musical” (Ben Brantley, NY Times March 2005) with another quest that of bringing King Arthur and his entourage to the enchanted land

12

called The Great White Way; and part the tongue-in-cheek Broadway musical itself, featuring ‘a bevy’ of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, witch-burnings (banned in Joburg by the Occupational Health and Safety mavens), shrubberies and French people, Monty Python’s Spamalot never fails to entertain those “who value the virtues of shrewd idiocy, artful tackiness and wide-eyed impiety” (Brantley again). King Arthur, the King of England, will be played by Norman Anstey. Joburg born actor and voice artist, Norman is perhaps best remembered for his role of Swaer in Castrol’s Can-o-the-Best TV commercials (from 1988 to 2003). Norman’s most recent stage musical appearances include lead roles in Evita, The King and I, Footloose and Ons Vir Jou. The much-coveted role of The Lady of the Lake, a Diva – most certainly the leading lady of the show – has

Hello Johannesburg July 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

been awarded to Michelle Botha. Michelle says she “has been an actress and singer since I can remember”. However, she actually received her Honours cum Laude in drama from the University of Pretoria in 1998. Since then, Michelle has been seen on television – including as Susan in 7 de Laan – and in the stage musicals Aspects of Love, Jock of the Bushveld and Aladdin. Director and designer, Simon James, started his theatrical career whilst still at school, working on amateur and professional productions. Since “going professional” at the former CAPAB, he has worked for almost all of the independent producers in South Africa and most of the erstwhile Performing Arts Councils. Since 2001, Simon has been resident Production Manager and Associate Producer at Joburg Theatre, where he spends much of his time downloading old Monty Python and Morecambe and Wise broadcasts.

So, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life by booking your tickets now for the funniest night out of the year. For those who don’t yet know: Spam is a canned precooked meat product first introduced in 1937. The product has become part of many jokes and urban legends about mystery meat, which has made it part of pop culture and folklore. One of the Monty Python’s Spamalot musical’s creators, Eric Idle, explains: ‘It comes from a line in the movie, which goes “we eat ham, and jam and Spam a lot”. Hence, the show’s title: Monty Python’s Spamalot. And definitely not to be confused with Camelot!

Q: What would be your ultimate theatre production to direct, and why? A: I think the show I would like to do most would be ‘The Who’s’ Tommy. RAEL LASAROW

managing director of Thirst Bar Services

Founder of Thirst Bar Services nine years ago. Q. What does a-day-in-the-life-of Mr Lasarow consist of? A. I normally wake up early because I have busy days. On average I have four meetings with clients and one meeting with staff. If there are events on that night, I go past the event to make sure my client is happy. Then it’s dinner and I get ready for bed and watch my shows. At the end of the day, I reflect on my accomplishments or on how I can improve things. Q. What does a successful entrepreneur mean to you?

A. In a big project space (that I own), working with a diverse group of creatives, producing innovative products.

A. It means succeeding with your vision by continually keeping ahead of the competition. I take pride in seeing our humble beginnings and what we have accomplished today.

Q. What do you love most about living in Jozi?

Q. How does a ‘normal’ client become a loyal client?

A. It has to be the city’s potential. I look around and see possibilities. It’s super exciting!

A. Offering something that makes a client feel special, goes a long way. I believe that if you do a great job at your first encounter with your client, he/she will trust you and is more likely to use you again. It is ultimately up to you as the business owner to forge these relationships.

Who doesn’t begin to salivate at the thought of frozen yoghurt? Famed for its luscious sweetness and endless flavours, FILO frozen yoghurt is a standout winner! These special flavours always leave you wanting more. And the best part is that it’s low in calories. Customers want a healthy and customized treat and that is exactly what FILO offers. The flavors are fabulous, making your taste buds tingle, and you are the artist - you create your own FILO art. “It’s frozen yoghurt your way.” Naturally, on the first few attempts your yoghurt bowl is overflowing with five flavors, three toppings and two sauces (or is that just me?), but overtime you find your ultimate perfect, artistic creation. My personal desired FILO froyo has to be the salted caramel flavor, with peanut butter crunch and fudge crumble. Some other favorites are coconut, pistachio, cheesecake and Greek. Diabetic? No problem there is a sugar free option. Kosher? Don’t

dispute there are licensed Kosher machines. Halaal? FILO is certified by the National Independent Halaal Trust. FILO has taken your froyo experience to a whole new league. FILO waffles have just been introduced, warm, crunchy goodness topped with smooth and creamy FILO froyo - heaven on a plate. They have also just introduced the new FILO juice bar, garden-fresh juice made daily. But there’s even more on offer, now you can also take FILO home with you (we cant be selfish with our froyo all the time). FILO can be enjoyed by the whole family and hey, let’s be honest it makes for an impressive healthy dessert. FRYS FAMILY FOOD SINCE 1991 Making the world a better place, one veggie meal at a time I get really excited when I discuss anything to do with vegan, vegetarian, green, environmentally conscious and cruelty-free products. So when Frys Family inquired about hosting a dinner party for the Hello Joburg team, we hit the roof, literally. Frys Family concept is simple: in an effort to seek vegetarian varieties Wally and Debbie Fry, both committed vegetarians, began making protein alternatives or meat analogues for their own consumption. The business is driven by the family’s passion to create delicious and cruelty-free food that has as little impact on the natural environment as possible with emphasis on putting principles over profits. Don’t you just love the concept? So for our dinner all we needed were ten friends, a bunch of cutlery, an assortment of crockery and a multitude of vino, of course. Seemed easy enough as Candice, our own private chef, would come into our home and cook us a five course vegetarian meal. What was even more interesting was that before each course, Candice explained how she created each dish and what ingredients

formed each foodgasmic creation. Now let’s get down to the core, the real juicy bits. What was for dinner? The lamb style curry in mini bunny chows, with saucy sambals on the side (cucumber raita, tomato and onion and raisin chutney) was heavenly and succulent, while the oven baked (meat free) chicken Schnitzels, layered with sautéed baby mushrooms, lemon and fresh thyme with roasted rosa tomatoes made our taste buds tingle. Mind blown yet? This ought to do the trick: sliders served with a smoked tomato sauce and the other with a wasabi and coriander vegan mayo. It was a charming evening and afterwards we even constructed and tested some of the recipes using the Frys products. The grand part of it all: we got an extensive recipe book with all the evenings meals. A victorious modus operandi! JUST A MUG FULL OF CHOCOLATE – KEEPS THE COLD AWAY The only time you can really have guilt free hot chocolate is in winter. So let’s not mess around and get straight to the good stuff.

1. WOLVES, 3 CORLETT DRIVE, ILLOVO It has to be hands down one of the best in town. You just can’t go wrong with the excuse me sir but there’s a moustache in my hot chocolate at Wolves. I mean what more can you possibly want in winter with your hot chocolate besides a chocolate moustache on a stick to dip in your mug and then let it melt all over your face. Besides the moustache, this hot chocolate is the perfect chocolate balance that you just couldn’t understand or respect as a kid - not too sweet and not too bitter. We love it! 011 447 2360

2. vida e caffè, ROSEBANK MALL It’s doesn’t get more decadent than the Chocolate Quente – melted Lindt hot chocolate. It’s the real deal. With full cream milk and its authentic cocoa taste, you’ll never be able to go back to the instant stuff you buy on the shelves. Agreed it’s a little on

A DOLLOP OF ICE-CREAM WITH YOUR WINTER? Who decided ice-cream was a seasonal thing? Meet Paul Ballen who agrees that ice-cream should be enjoyed all year round.

If you frequent any of these places in Joburg - Wolves Café, Love Food Café, Thrupps, Warm & Glad, Stanley Beer Yard, Father Coffee, Melissa’s, Meat Etc or Lexi’s and have ordered the ice-cream off the menu then you have probably gone back and ordered it again. Paul’s Home Made Ice-Cream is that good. PHMIC is a gourmet, niche ice-cream producer based in Johannesburg who turns traditional dessert and ice-cream flavours on their heads. With a range of exotic and classic flavours and using only the best ingredients, PHMIC is re-educating Joburgers on what good ice-cream should be and trying to create a more conscious, aware and appreciative ice-cream consumer. And it’s not as simple as you think either. Making ice-cream is about time and process. Paul explains, “In the case of a high quality ice-cream, a few key ingredients are mixed together, heated, cooled and then go through a process of churning, before they are frozen to the hard-

ened final product.” Paul didn’t plan his sojourn with cream and sugar, it kind of just happened. In his own words “being brought up by my American father and South African mother, I visited Manhattan annually. From a young age, on the hot summer streets, I would visit shops, enjoying smooth, creamy ice cream. I began to realize that my home country didn’t offer any of these delicious treats. All that was available in the freezers isles of local supermarkets were commercial ice creams, made with fillers like vegetable fats and palm fat, and pumped with air. For my 21st birthday, my mom bought me an ice cream machine.” And well that was the kiss that woke up Sleeping Beauty – literally. Driven and focused Paul got straight to work. He played around with different recipes and attempted to make the perfect batch. He did some product sampling with those closest to him to get feedback and opinions on his ice-cream. The response was

overwhelming. And not because it was family and friends. The sentiment that prevailed was that this was the best damn ice-cream than anything else on local shelves. So he hosted an ice cream and waffle day at home and the people came.

stores throughout Joburg and working at creating a gourmet, crafted ice-cream empire. As for the flavours you just have to try, where do we start? From Green Tea, Stem Ginger, Rooibos Tea and Dulce De Leche to a White Chocolate and Rose flavour, Peanut Butter,

After that it was time for labels, tubs and packaging. With his entrepreneurial spirit hecreated a dedicated Facebook page, order form website, and used his personal Instagram and Twitter amounts to market his magic. “One thing led to another. More and more people started to know about it, and I decided that I should start approaching some niche coffee shops and restaurants.” The demand was so intense that Paul had to buy another small domestic machine and then a bigger professional ice cream machine with a built in freezer. One machine, then two machine, then three. Soon he was supplying selected

Salted Caramel and Turkish delight - get yourself a tub now! And don’t give us that “but it’s winter excuse”. Paul’s Homemade Ice-Cream is an extremely rich and creamy ice-cream and therefore isn’t really ‘cold’. With his constant flavour innovation he is making people aware that his product can be used as a compliment to other more ‘wintery’ desserts. NEW SEAFOOD RESTAURANT IN THE HEART OF BRYANSTON When the Lobster Trap opened its doors three months ago, owner Dave Woodcock had two goals – to invite customers into a unique dining space and serve innovative seafood dishes. The menu is inventive and changes every month allowing the executive chef, Ryan Magnus, to constantly create new dishes, and customers to explore different tastes. For example, for starters try the vanilla butter poached crayfish salad, or the seafood millefeuille (calamari and langoustine tails with layers of crisp phyllo in a coriander and lemongrass seafood sauce). House specialties include fresh linefish served with passion fruit coulis (instead of the usual lemon butter sauce), and kingklip bourguignon. The grilled langoustines and king Mozambique prawns are popular, as is the sushi and oyster bar. Sushi chef, Johnny, has a large dedicated following amongst Bryanston residents. Dave’s emphasis on fresh food is a priority and only select linefish from KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast is served. The wine choice is extensive, with about 80 boutique wines on offer. Customers are able to choose their

wine directly off the shelves. A large selection of cocktails are also served. The restaurant makes the most of it’s position: it is elevated off ground level and floor to ceiling windows allow for unobstructed views looking north, over tree tops, towards Midrand – there are no parking lots or noisy street scenes to disturb your experience. The design approach is contemporary, light and airy, making the most of the view. The restaurant seats 68 people comfortably. Dave and his team continue to introduce new items on the menu and cooking techniques. Look out in the near future for live Maine lobster, smoked fish and eel, and to end off your meal, homemade ice-cream for dessert. The deets: First Floor, Weleda Health Centre, corner Main and Culross Road, Bryanston 011 706 8757 Open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, and lunch on Sunday. Lobster Trap is an environmentally conscious restaurant, recycling everything from tins and bottles to all cardboard and wet waste.

THE COLOURS OF CRAFT BEER

Rob Heyns from League of Beers is our resident beer sommelier here at Hello Joburg. So far, he has discussed what makes a beer a craft beer, the five steps of tasting a beer properly, how to smell the aroma of a beer and how to distinguish between different craft beer flavours. Today, he covers the colours of craft beer. Craft beers should vary in shade from a deep reddish-brown to an almost transparent yellow. If you see a beer that’s looking green, step away quietly and order something else. Unless it is made from pure hops, in which case, dive in and be prepared to loose your palate sensitivity forever. Step 1: Remember that you never judge a beer by its bottle (although some of them are really cool). You need to pour the craft beer into the correct beer glass (this is another art, but more on that in a future article). Step 2: Take a moment: step back and observe before you dive in. What does the head of the beer look like? This can be quite an in-depth topic - sommeliers even discuss “head retention” which is how long the bubbles of the head last. For now, just acknowledging that different beers have different heads is a step in the right direction.

styles, you should be able to take a look at a beer and know what flavours to expect. This ability kind of makes you a super hero when around other beer tasters. All beers are a combination of different tones of yellow and red. • Light gold to mid-yellow: expect flavours of honey, biscuit or caramel. • Amber to ruddy-brown: expect nutty flavours, some burnt elements or toffee flavours. • Deep red to black: expect liquorice, chocolate and rich molasses flavours.

STAGES IS NOW ALSO OPEN AT THE ROODEPOORT THEATRE! 011 674 1356/7/8/9 100 CHRISTIAAN DE WET ROAD FLORIDA PARK, ROODEPOORT WWW.ROODEPOORTTHEATRE.COM.

Step 4: Is the beer opaque or transparent? If it’s looking a little on the murky side, it usually means that the beer is unfiltered so you can expect a stronger flavour. After a few tastings, you might start seeing patterns emerging between taste and colour, although the two can be independent of each other due to the many factors making up beer flavour. Until then, it’s a great excuse to keep practising! Yours in beer, Rob @leagueofbeers

Stages is certainly one of the newest trendy spots Joburg has to offer. Situated inside the Joburg Theatre, Stages is a social hub filled with good times, enjoyment and delicious food for any occasion.

Step 3: Now focus on the colour of the beer. Different beer styles have very different colours. Once you are acquainted with different brewing

Higher Ground Rest aurant For the best views and food in Joburg!

Mo-zam-bik started out as a dream between two friends, Ryan Stewart and Brett Michielin. A dream where you can experience Mozambique right on your doorstep. This dream became a reality when they opened their first of six Mo-zam-bik Restaurants in South Africa in 2005, the latest edition to their chain of restaurants, Mo-Zam-Bik Linksfield, opened in February 2014. The restaurants, which all offer traditional Portuguese cuisine, are based on the authentic Mozambique “barraca” which in English means “hut”. The menu caters for all tastes, with delectable dishes such as fish topped with a variety of different sauces, grilled prawns, succulent marinated chicken and of course the traditional Portuguese Espatada, Trinchado and Prego Rolls. SHOPPING For all your shopping desires

THE LATEST POP-UP CRAZE Pop-up retail If new products can come and go and brands chop and change as they please, then why can’t the retail stores too? Well, they now are and it has become the latest trend. Trendwatching.com has noticed an increase in temporary retail manifestations around the world and have dubbed this trend ‘pop-up retail’. The Hello Joburg team, being intrigued by this pop-up concept decided to attend two pop-ups in Jozi. It’s a Bling Thing Jane Killian is just your regular girl next door. She is a personal trainer and runs her studio from home. Her initial idea consisted of a few pieces of jewellery and phone covers that she could sell to her friends on Facebook. Two years later It’s a Bling Thing is blooming and flourishing. Jane

started an online shop, and has never looked back. She has also done three pop-ups in Joburg. It’s a Bling Thing is an affordable way to add bling to your life and its focus is on trendy pieces that are exclusive and fashionable. Jane says it simply, “I love being able to do all the things that I am passionate about. It’s been amazing finding a balance between my creative side and my business side.” When we attended the pop-up we were amazed - the jewellery was on trend, so chic and most importantly affordable. Our favorite item though, was the newly launched Proudly South African product, Zulu Lulu, stylish afro-chic clutch bags. Need we say more? The deets: @itsablingthingsa @zulululusa

The Urban Eco Design Co. The Urban Eco Design Co. partnered with Conscious 108 and hosted an event in the gardens of Yswara in Parkhurst. The pop-up consisted of a couple of brands. There was Yswara, which creates beautiful contemporary lifestyle goods based on century-old African craftsmanship. We indulged in Yswara’s fine living tea and accessories. It was not your ordinary tea but rather a fusion of spicy, fresh aromas and flavors like coconut, pineapple and rooibos. The Yswara soy candles were just as divine with aromas like freesia flowers, orange blossoms, lemongrass, white lily, rose petitgrain, lavender and white musk circling the room.

Urban Eco Design Co. also introduced their collection of brands that inspire sustainable and conscious living, such as BACSAC, Simple Sam and Brooks England. BACSAC is known for its innovative weatherresistant urban planters that are suitable for all sorts of environments. Simple Sam Bicycles are single speed bicycles, ideal for commuting. Brooks England is a true heritage brand that has been in operation since 1866. They produce some of the world’s finest bicycle saddles, bags and accessories. OSACR NCUBE (Creative design director) The essence and name for Vintage Zionist was derived from a spiritual place. The Zionist, representing one’s self-assured reference to self. Derived from the word Zion, it stands for multicultural and spiritual connotations. Pamper: to treat with excessive indulgence

BARBERS IN JOBURG

THIS IS A MAN’S WORLD, BUT IT WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT A BARBER Whilst so much focus is put on women’s beauty, we thought it fitting that we do something for the guys. Who better to show off what it takes to put a real man together than by the barbers themselves.

1. SALON ROMA

Where: corner Seventh Avenue and First Avenue East, Parktown North Why we love it: Going strong for 45-plus years this barber is old fashioned, traditional, authentic and is as good as it gets. It is a true Italian experience. They make some of the best coffee in town and the Grappa ain’t too bad either. Book now: 011 880 5940

3. PREMIER ITALIAN GENTS HAIRSTYLISTS Where: 10 Bedford Centre, Smith Street, Bedford Gardens Why we love it: Well, firstly the barber has been open for 41 years. Secondly, there are only three stylists cutting/shaving at a time to enhance the exclusivity and one-on-one relationships created at the barber. It’s definitely our kinda hangout.

Why we love it: Walk-in service: check. Attentive and skilled staff: check. Casual rock n’ roll environment: check. Quality hair services that are the primary focus: check. SOLD Book Now: 011 467 1150 Web: www.floydsbarbershop.co.za MONABONA’S BEARDBALM

The Jeppe Street Power Station, built in 1927, was the largest and last of the three steam-driven power stations in Newtown. It housed Turbine Hall as well as the North Boiler House and three concrete cooling towers. The Power Station lost its importance when a more modern station was built in Orlando, Soweto in 1942, but it was only in 1961 that the plant finally shut down. The station was given new life four years later when two Rolls Royce gas turbines were installed for use in emergencies and peak loading periods. As neglect and indecision plagued Newtown’s future in the 1970s, this fine example of early 20thcentury industrial architecture was threatened. Over time, 300 squatters occupied the space. Ultimately, AngloGold Ashanti’s proposal to build its new headquarters here revived the fortunes of Turbine Hall. After protracted consultations between architects and heritage practitioners, it was agreed that the North Boiler House could be demolished to make way for the development. In 2005, the City relocated the squatters to stands in Orange Farm and the spectacular transformation of the building began. It was completed in 2009. Source: www.newtown.co.za

WARM UP THE FUNNY BONES FOR WINTER

The late great Maya Angelou summed it up. “I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t laugh.” We couldn’t agree more. The good news is that Joburg’s comedy scene is heaving with new talent for you to check out! Nothing like a warm belly laugh to keep winter at bay. The comedy stalwarts like the Joe Parkers, Barry Hiltons and Mel Millers of the business have set up the stage for the new kids on the block and now it’s their time at the mic. But like most aspects of the rat race, the comedy landscape comprises fierce competition. So If you’re looking for a quick fame and fortune fix perhaps try your hand at something else. Local comedy has gained extensive traction in the public and local media space over the last few years because it’s important to laugh. Performers like John Vlismas and Trevor Noah have been known to pack an auditorium fast. We’ve seen it! Look, there are always going to be a couple of flash in the pan acts but we’ve spotted a few fresh faces

46

definitely worth noting. We scanned the line-ups of Joburg’s hottest venues and here’s what we found. First up meet Alfred Adrian. On the funny roll for just over two years now, he loves everything about comedy - and be warned that from the moment he opens his mouth you may love everything about him too! We asked him what doing comedy actually feel like? “From walking on to that stage with a new set that’s never been heard to the moment you are in the zone with the crowd hanging on your every word - it’s an adrenaline rush like no other.” He describes that exhilaration of connecting with a crowd full of strangers and for a few brief moments knowing that it’s the authenticity of your material alone holding that entire room together.” Alfie doesn’t romanticise about the craft either and admits that to be totally comfortable on stage with your own discomfort in front of a room full of people is the toughest part. But he loves it anyway. “Even

Hello Johannesburg July 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

on my worst nights I love it. I would do this for free forever (just don’t tell the promoters) if I had to. I love it, it’s the only thing In my life outside for my family that truly makes me happy.” If you’re making your way to the Grahamstown Arts Festival this month then diarise to see him live. You’ll thank us. www.nationalartsfestival.co.za Glen Biderman started out as an actor before realising he was pretty damn funny. Now the skinny looking awkward-at-first kid is making a name for himself in the big smog. Originally from Cape Town, the Jozi comedy scene was a major contributor to the move. “There are just so many more gigs in JHB and the competition (although healthy) is stiff. Because there are more gigs here, we get more stage time which is crucial in developing our craft. The debate between JHB and CT audiences is often discussed among SA comics. I believe the cultural and demographic differences

between CT and JHB audiences forces us to take cognisance of what material we choose to deliver. I have no preference but because most of my material has been developed in Joburg, I find it easier to try new stuff here.” Another one to watch is Loyiso Madinga who has made some serious waves since surfing onto the comedy scene back in 2012. He’s already told jokes on some of Jozi’s funniest stages including the Nandos Comedy at the Teatro. He has also graced the AWEdnesday stage which has fast become a platform for some of SA’s top emerging comics and a show you should definitely check out. Loyiso’s natural and charming stage presence will worm its way into your funny bone fast. Daily life in Johannesburg can be pretty heavy sometimes from bills to politics to crime. But if you tap into the local comedy space you just may find yourself laughing about it all. How bad could that be? By Carly Ritz

LAND ROVER AFRICA CUP

The newly redeveloped Inanda Club hosts the 2014 Land Rover Africa Cup from 18 to 20 July for a weekend of sensational polo. The headline sponsor, Land Rover SA, is inviting top African teams to compete in one of Africa’s top international polo tournaments. “Polo and Land Rover are naturally complementary. They are quintessentially British, require enormous capability, and are robustly elegant,” says Peter Biven, Marketing and Communications Director of Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and subSahara Africa. Polo has been played in South Africa for over a century. Because of the number of highly trained horses needed to play the game, it has traditionally been a sport for the well heeled, and even now there are only about 400 registered club players in the country. The deets: 18 to 20 July Tickets: R150 for adults, R75 for children under 12 and can be bought at the gate. 1 Forrest Road, Inanda, Sandton info@inandaclub.co.za www.inandaclub.co.za

TRAVEL Explore South Africa and all its beauty

ESCAPE TO THE CAPE

Cape Town is alive with culture, color and creativity. It is impossible not to fall in love with the natural beauty of the city and this is why The Guardian and the New York Times has rated Cape Town as a top destination for 2014. “This is great news for our city’s tourism sector and excellent publicity for our destination,” said MEC of Western Cape Tourism, Alan Winde.

Getting accommodation in Cape Town Cape Town offers a vast array of boutique hotels, self-catering apartments, luxurious seaside apartments as well as lodges and backpackers. We highly recommend Southern Sun The Cullinan and The Pepper Club Hotel and Spa. SOUTHERN SUN THE CULLINAN

Getting to Cape Town Getting to Cape Town has never been easier. You can fly to Cape Town from Johannesburg, Durban and other South African cities, with these airlines: South African Airways, Mango Airlines, 1time Airline and Kulula. Getting around Cape Town Once you land in Cape Town, car rental is an absolute pleasure. It is situated at the airport and you can choose from companies like Europcar or Avis. You can also opt for the MyCiTi bus. It is a modern, scheduled way to travel. Another great way to get around is by using the City Sightseeing Bus, which gives you the option of hopping on and off at various major attractions throughout the day. The buses are open-top double-decker buses, which allow you to take in the majestic views.

Where: 1 Cullinan Street, Cape Town Waterfront

and leisure. You can expect a five star experience as a guest at the Pepper Club. The hotel connects directly to the city’s vibrant Long Street with its cosmopolitan street life. There are panoramic views of table mountain, a pristine spa and pool area overlooking the Cape’s natural beauty, a contemporary cuisinethemed restaurant and an intimate private cinema! Choose your movie, book your time, order a refreshment and entertain your taste buds with a box of popcorn. Best of the Cape

Why we love it: If you have never visited The Cullinan, imagine 394 rooms, 24 hour room service, classic luxury, courteous hospitality, gracious staff all under a palatial and exclusive hotel. The Cullinan is in the CBD, which is one of the most soughtafter areas in the city. It is a gem and you are certainly treated like royalty. In fact we would go as far as saying it is one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had. THE PEPPER CLUB Where: Corner Loop and Pepper Street, Cape Town Why we love it: The Pepper Club has always been on our travel radar. The hotel brand exudes class, luxury

Hout Bay: Just a winding drive through Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay is a seaside destination. It hosts the colourful Hout Bay Harbour Market which sells creative food, clothes, crafts and always has a festive spirit. Imizamo Yetho Township: You can hop on the Cape Town City Sightseeing bus and hop off here, where you will learn about the history of the residents in the village and see what a community in the Cape achieves, when working together. The Museum Mile: Visit the South African Jewish Museum, The South African Museum and the District Six Museum.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens: Home to over 22 000 indigenous plants, Kirstenbosch is breathtakingly beautiful and is an ideal location for a picnic. You can hike the gardens, enjoy a concert or walk the Tree Snake (Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway.) Just launched on May 17 2014 the canopy walkway, is already the go-to-spot for the best “views that go on forever”. Hello Johannesburg July 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za

PROPERTY

Hello Houghton... Johannesburg real estate is dipped in urban history and sprinkled with nostalgia. A visit to the solid suburbs of Houghton will tell you that very story. After all it was home to our country’s most celebrated citizen – the late, great Former President Nelson Mandela. Adrienne Hersch Properties has also called hilly Houghton home for the last 23 years. Unquestionably one of Joburg’s finest real estate agencies, Adrienne Hersch Properties is joining forces with your favourite magazine, Hello Joburg, to bring you the rich snippets of news and information about the hustling and bustling town of Jozi, with its sprawling suburbs, exciting energy and moody temperaments. Here we will offer unspoken insights into the do’s and don’ts of buying and selling property, market trends and everything realty. And as Dorothy always said as she clicked her red slippers together, there is no place like home. So we’re kicking off our new venture with Houghton - naturally. Houghton remains a neighbourhood of distinction with its tree-lined avenues, large, grand homes and old school charm. Its fantastic positioning between the Johannesburg and Sandton CBD’s makes it ideal for business and family to plant their roots. A suburb that reflects the values of its residents, Houghton’s development has been gradual with a firm focus on maintaining its natural serenity. To this end Houghton boasts far less congestion and far more grace than some of its closest neighbours. Historically, Houghton has been and remains a wealthy area in contrast to some of its direct neighbours like Yeoville or Berea. It is an eclectic melting pot of people, religions, cultures and businesses. And let’s not forget its striking architecture is home to some of the best examples of Le Corbusier’s modernist Art Deco buildings. As beautiful as she is within, Houghton’s value is complimented by what lies at her borders. Houghton may not have its dedicated shopping Mecca but its proximity to the chaos of Killarney, Norwood, Sandton, Rosebank, Hyde Park and Melrose Arch keeps you close enough to access whatever you need and far away enough to block out the noise when you need to. If you’re new to the area, here are some of the iconic spots to visit.

ADRIeNNe HeRSCH CeO Adrienne Hersch Properties

ADRIeNNe HeRSCH PROPeRTIeS Head Office over 20 years ago in Houghton

The Victory Theatre has played home to some of South Africa’s most ambient theatre and signature productions. Originally a bioscope, this little theatre has survived two World Wars, The Boer Wars, The Depression and the advent of the digital modern age. Sold as recently as 2005, the theatre has been revamped to offer great entertainment coupled with fantastic food and easy on-site parking. For the health junkies and outdoor types, Houghton is your playground. With two world class golf courses, The Wanderers Stadium, Melrose Virgin Active and parks a plenty for running and walking, there are no shortages of ways to be and get active. In fact, did you know that the Houghton Golf Course, which is a full championship facility has hosted numerous South African Opens? From sport in the morning to family outings in the afternoon, just up the road is ADRIeNNe HeRSCH PROPeRTIeS without doubt one of Johannesburg’s top attractions for tourists and locals alike Head Office today in Houghton – the Johannesburg Zoo. It opened at the turn of the 20th Century and remains the ideal place for family time over weekends where you can either spread out for a picnic on The Zoo’s verdant lawns or explore the fascinating wildlife from around the globe. It also offers night tours so you can get a feel for animals and creatures that go bump in the dark. With top schools on its boundaries, Houghton is renowned for close access to great schools that consistently churn out sporting and academic giants. The growth of Houghton has been much like that of our own “little” real estate agency which started as the dream of one woman trying to provide for her family. Indeed Adrienne Hersch Properties has grown much like the small “mining” village into the astute and significantly larger being that it is today. Properties in both lower and upper Houghton continue to prove popular with demand exceeding supply keeping prices buoyant. Houghton continues to develop at its own pace, unhurried and structured. Having been based here for over 20 years we have watched as Houghton has grown and been happy to offer our contribution to its growth. The Adrienne Hersch Properties head office is in good company in this “little” neighbourhood and is proud to call it home. Hello Johannesburg July 2014 www.hellojoburg.co.za www.gohello.co.za
