People of Joburg!
Brett Rogers You have a new show called show Food, Booze & Tattoos, which was broadcast on SABC3. Tell us about it. Food, Booze and Tattoos is a creative travelogue through South Africa, where I get to engage with some of the most impressive artists in those three fields. How many tattoos do you have and which one is your favourite? No idea! My favourite tattoo at the moment is my RuPaul done by Tamar Thorn at The Body Architects.

in general the area of Melville is my home. I go there to be with my people, but I have to mention that I get incredibly remarkable breakfasts at Pablo Eggs Go Bar.
Who's your celeb crush? Ever had one of your girlfriends names tattooed on They would be Tao Okamoto and Susan Sarandon.Tao is your body? just so gorgeous I can barely take it. And Susan Sarandon is just Haha, No! I do have one that’s dedicated to an ex, though. I got totally badass. it after we broke up, so there’s no regrets. Snappchat? Yay or Nay? Where is your favourite hangout in Jozi? Nay, not for me. I do like the filters, though. H So, ordinarily I’d pick a specific place in Melville, but at the moment it’s impossible for me to select just one. So I’ll say that T @BrrRogers @BrrRogers

Metro Restaurant & Lounge
The minute we heard that it had been relocated and revamped, we raced to the new Metro because we so adored the previous venue that was situated inside Benmore Shopping Centre. The restaurant has always been recognised for its power to convene Joburg’s finest and this glamorous bistro has been embedded in both our minds and our bellies. We couldn’t wait to delve right into this new hotspot! The most intriguing aspect about the space is its size – the new venue is spacious yet warm, and swanky yet comfortable. It’s the ideal spot to wine and dine with family and friends, that special someone or an important business associate. From the ambience to the service, every guest will feel like royalty and will be able to indulge in the full experience of this classic spot.

Above all else, what impressed us most about the evening was the food. Firstly, we were well taken care of by the staff, who paid attention to every little detail and served us the most spectacular cuisine. For starters, we recommend Metro’s famous peri-peri chicken livers that come served in a magnificent creamy peri-peri and lemon sauce. Can we get a hallelujah!? These robust beauties Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
overflow with flavour and are definitely a firm favourite amongst the regulars. For the health conscious, the nutty beetroot and butternut salad is fresh and simply delicious and the Metro-made spring rolls are divine and guilt-free. For mains, we applaud the burgers, which are made using 220 gram homemade beef patties. We haven’t stopped salivating since our last bite! If you’re particularly ravenous, look no further than the Metro Dagwood: a succulent steak and a mouth-watering beef patty with bacon, fried egg, cheddar cheese and Metro-made sweet chilli mayo sauce. You can also enjoy their trio of mini burgers, which are a bargain at only 89 bucks! Bonus: you can’t go wrong with their decadent and flavourful mushroom sauce to top it all off. Metro Restaurant is yet another reason to be proud of our beautiful city, and we highly recommend
you head right on over to their new venue for a memorable night out. P.S. Don’t forget to grab a cocktail or two (or three) after your meal in the well-designed, graceful and stylish Metro Lounge! H

The Gentlemen’s Arthouse opens in Newtown Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, crazy cats and acrobats – welcome to the circus! The previously derelict 1911 Edwardian Gentlemen’s Washroom is making a flamboyant re-entry onto the scene as The Gentlemen’s Arthouse special events venue in Newtown. “‘Arthouse’ is a double entendre on the word ‘outhouse’ which is what this incredible space used to be”, explains Maira Koutsoudakis, CEO of Life Interiors + Architecture + Strategic Design. “Today it’s a celebration of gentlemen – all gentlemen – of the time and the concept of civility, but with a twist. The Gentlemen’s Arthouse, due to its nature as an insular, small foot-print, big concept space is designed as a molecular mixology bar with a high-end tasting menu and jaw-dropping theatrical performances.”. “The drinks are a bit naughty – that’s how we want them to feel, anyway – and are served in antique glasses. Even the food will be served in whatever piece of ‘antiquery’ we think is appropriate,” says executive chef, Jeanel Pieterse. She’s been working on dishes like stuffed marrow-bones, pressed springbok, a bay leaf crème anglaise, and she’s reworking the concept of assiettes.
Following the craft cocktail trend at highend bars around SA, the mixologist at Gentlemen’s Arthouse is creating his own range of aromatics and exclusive cocktails. The venue’s semi-precious stone bar will also stock special and boutique wines. When you enter the Gentlemen’s Arthouse, you enter the world of the curious and surprising, and the only thing to expect is the unexpected. The washroom has been transformed into a quirky, yet luxurious new space with velvet curtains, cathedral-style windows, heavy wooden bars, the original green tiles and urinals. To further the transformation from an outhouse to an Arthouse, original artwork by famed local artists including William Kentridge, Kendell Geers and Norman Catherine have been installed. Top tips for choosing the best boots for winter
A
s the icy weather starts to pick up, many of us make our annual trek to the mall in search of the perfect pair of boots to keep our feet warm and toasty over winter. While we all have different ideas of what shoe heaven looks like, there are a few things we can all agree on – style, comfort and fit are a pretty big deal. Finding a boot that’s versatile enough to go with pretty much anything in your winter wardrobe is also a massive bonus. Your best option is to go for something more versatile and something that can withstand whatever weather conditions winter throws at you – cold, wet or windy (or all three!).
12
Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
You're made of tough stuff. Your boots should be too! A boot such as the Jeep Gecko offers a trendy take on the humble work boot. The rugged exterior makes for a bold and edgy look, while the durable, rubberised soles provide the perfect amount of grip to see you through even the most treacherous of urban terrains.
Be tough… but be on trend For a boot that was once considered a bluecollar wardrobe essential, fashion has certainly brought the work-boot look a long way. From the city streets to rap videos and runway shots, the work boot has taken over the scene, revolutionising contemporary fashion to the point that owning a pair of your own is every cool kid’s dream come true.
Style and comfort top the checklist Who doesn’t love a pair of shoes that not only looks great but also fits like a glove and feels as though they were made especially for your feet? Choose a boot that is comfortable, because it comes in handy when you’re on your feet for hours on end and pausing for a break isn’t an option. His and hers is hot For those who have ever spotted a great pair of shoes on someone of the opposite gender and wished for a pair of their own, the good news is that the androgyny trend is heading for new and edgier heights Jeep Gecko boots are available at Jeep and selected Edgars stores nationwide, in sizes six to 13 at the recommended retail price of R1 650 for ladies, and R1 800 for men’s. Buying a diamond for investment purposes is different to purchasing a beautiful piece of jewellery. For instance, a diamond that would look magnificent in a necklace might not be appropriate as an investment. It's unlikely that a diamond purchased over the counter will make a solid investment. That said, once you have purchased a diamond as an investment, you can always have it set in a piece of jewellery without this affecting its value - although selecting a well-known designer, recognised for his craftsmanship, will of course enhance the piece. Cilantros Restaurant
Located in the vibrant Nelson Mandela Square, Cilantros, which has only been open a few weeks, has already gained a reputation for being one of the best restaurants in the newly refurbished square. This establishment certainly is a welcome addition to this prestigious location.
A
part from wondering if every dish includes cilantro, we were curious as to what makes this restaurant stand out from its neighbouring competitors, and right from the start we knew it was their ten-out-often service. The staff is driven by passion and a willingness to serve delicious food. Not only was our waiter friendly and accommodating, but a wine glass was never left empty and a fork was never out of place. Cilantros is the answer to Joburgers’ complaints that prices are escalating while service is depleting, and you’re made to feel welcome upon arrival and are sure to leave with a smile on your face. With a name like Cilantros, you’re guaranteed bold flavours, and that boldness is mirrored in the décor, too. Modern, sophisticated elegance gives the venue an aesthetically enticing appeal. With luscious evergreen vines enveloping the ceilings, you feel a sort of enchanting Alice in Wonderland magic that ticks all the right boxes. And that’s even before you start eating.

FYI, there isn’t cilantro in every dish, so for those of you who aren’t too fond of the herb, do not fret! Most of all, we love their attention to detail, from the cooking of the salmon to Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
Each meal is crammed with refinement and a graceful symmetry of flavours, and every mouthful is packed with passion, zest and a whole lot of goodness! the sautéing of the vegetables to the flambéing of the sauce. But be warned: this is cuisine of foodgasmic standards. Each meal is crammed with refinement and a graceful symmetry of flavours, and every mouthful is packed with passion, zest and a whole lot of goodness! There’s a high chance you’ll find yourself in a “should I or shouldn’t I lick the bowl” situation at least once, and we were only able to hold ourselves back by taking a sip from our glasses of Meerlust Rubicon. What we’re most eager to recommend is the tapas side of Cilantros’ menu. The sweetness and succulence of the calamari is something to relish in and the golden deep-fried squid heads explode with flavour. The decadent garlic butter prawn bites served with a delicate sauce are not to be missed and last but definitely not least, the Scottish salmon fishcakes with a side of cilantro dip are full of zing! If you’re not the sharing type (we forgive you), then you’ll want to indulge in one of their famous tacos – we recommend the grilled chicken with roasted jalapenos, cheesy joy, tomato salsa and topped off with a dollop of sour cream and chilli chipotle sauce. Yum! With a cornucopia of sweet dishes on offer, make sure your waistbands are elasticised because you’d be foolish to miss out on dessert. For us, the Oreo Pavlova was the treat dreams are made of, and the perfect end to a perfect meal. It’s rare to receive such stellar service alongside such flavoursome food, so what are you waiting for, Hello Joburgers? Book your seat! H 3 011 784 2510

one immediately feels like royalty, ensuring a fulfilling experience. Last month, we were invited to wine and dine while experiencing the chef ’s creativity and his brand new menu for the restaurant. One thing’s for sure, this restaurant gets under your skin, in all the right ways. With the piano teasing in the background, we arrived with eager, growling stomachs, prepared to tackle the four-course menu. Each dish gave us an opportunity to unravel the chef's secrets and explore the magic of taste and flavour. For starters we discovered that beetroot polenta and peppered goats cheese make for the perfect combination. Included in the generously sized portion were candied hazelnuts, topped with orange dressing and beetroot leaves. With bursts of flavour and hints of cinnamon spice, our taste buds were burning for more. This dish could only be matched by the delicate smoked salmon terrine with spring onions and infused with cream cheese, which ticked all the decadent boxes. Main course was a real treat, because chef ’s ultimate dish to cook for friends and family is a traditional lamb curry, and we were certainly spoiled! We indulged
in the lamb noisette, paired with a glass of Kanonkop Kadette. The lamb, having been sous-vide in butter and rolled on the bone, melted like butter in your mouth, and was definitely a victorious dish! But the top prize had to go to the dessert, which was a magnificently grand chocolate dome. However, this was no ordinary dome, but instead a theatrical taste sensation. As the warm creme caramel sauce was poured over the top, the dome began to melt, and a lovely surprise, nestled inside was a traditional chocolate fondant. Enveloped with edible flowers and heavenly aromas, this dessert will leave you speechless. It’s what dreams are made of and worth every single calorie! If you have any space left after dinner, we highly recommend you visit the MAXIM whisky lounge next door, which serves an impressive number of unique whiskys and blends! Gather your troops, it’s time for soup! Let’s be honest: there’s nothing a cuppa soup can’t fix, and it never fails to warm the body, mind and soul. Rich, warm and wholesome, soups can be comforting and healthy, too. We sifted through the Jozi soup scene to find you our favourite soups spots in town. PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF NOODLES (PRON), LINDEN With an open kitchen, it’s very exciting being able to watch the chefs cook right in front of you. oes this sound familiar: you’re dying to have some special time with your favourite person – but it’s been a long week, you’re knackered after trying to put the kids to bed and, frankly, the winter weather isn’t doing much to lure you out the house. Karien Du Plessis of the Date Factory has the answer: a pre-packaged ‘date box’, that contains everything you need for a special night in your own home. Karien’s philosophy is that date night is one of the things you just shouldn’t neglect. She’s set out to make planning a date easy, removing all the hassle and “will he like it” nerves. “Every box contains something good, something food – usually homemade – and something for the mood,” Karien explains.
Every box contains something good, something food – usually homemade – and something for the mood By ‘mood’, she doesn’t necessarily mean sexy time (although there’s a box for that, too) – rather, it could be anything from a puzzle to an activity you do together, like cooking. The idea is to get you to reconnect in a creative way and, most importantly, have fun. Every box contains instructions, so if you’re the kind of person who likes following a plan, you’re covered – although you can, of course, do things your own way. H

Talking all things indulgent with Master Chocolatier,
B
Kees Beyers
eyers Chocolates was founded in 1987 by Kees Beyers, a Belgian-born confectioner. He identified a gap in the South African market for high-quality confectionery that could compare to European products, and so he immigrated, bringing his native chocolatier training and trusted Belgian recipes to South Africa. Hello Joburg had the opportunity to sit down with Kees, and this is what he had to say... What does it mean to be a Master Chocolatier? It starts with a foundation of intense training and years of experience. The Master Chocolatier is the conductor of an orchestra of flavours and fragrances. He or she knows which ingredients need to be subtle and which need to be bold – and can bring everything together to create a harmony of taste. Explorer, inventor, researcher, creator, artist – that is a Master Chocolatier. While growing up, was this always a dream of yours? When I was seven years old, I used to dream about owning a chocolate factory. It went beyond the usual childish desire to be able to eat chocolate every day… I wanted to immerse myself in a world of chocolate, to work with it, deeply understand it, and make others appreciate its wonders. Thirteen years later, at the age of 20, I started Beyers Chocolates in South Africa. My dream really did come true. What is your favourite Beyers Range? The Art of Chocolate range. There are three boxes – Fantasy of Fudge, Heart of Chocolate, and Shades of Dark. I really enjoy the intriguing juxtaposition of flavours and textures. Describe Beyers in three words. Innovative, expert, passionate. What is the best chocolate/food combination? Chocolate is incredibly versatile and can lend itself to combinations one would never imagine. Rich chocolate combined with a tart fruit like raspberry is a winner. Tender fillet with chocolate-wine sauce is another. Peppery, pungent Gorgonzola cheese tempered by smoky dark chocolate is amazing. 5 www.beyerschocolates.com Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Cosmetic companies maintain that the chemicals used in commercially manufactured products are safe – and many of them are, but only when used in small doses. The fact is that no-one is really certain of the effects that chemicals have on our bodies over a period of time.
If you prefer to err on the side of safety – both for yourself and the environment – there are safe, non-toxic natural alternatives. Even so, it is important to note that plant oils and extracts can also trigger unwanted results on the skin, and therefore these ingredients must be carefully and expertly researched and formulated.

a new menu that's setting tastebuds alight
lake Anderson was appointed as the Complex Executive Chef of Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination, Montecasino, in October last year and, having spent the first six months settling in to the challenges of running a 24/7 operation has now turned his significant culinary talents to reinventing the menu of the property’s trademark restaurant on the casino floor. The outstanding new menu features twists and turns on flavours and presentation which will make your tastebuds twirl while your toes curl. To kick start your palate, think pea and artichoke miza: crushed peas, yoghurt labneh, grilled artichoke and mint served with tortilla crisps; or confit duck tortellini with Asian-infused mushroom ragout, marinated cucumber and carrot ribbons served in a hoisin and duck broth topped with a microherb salad. Main courses are equally creative: mesquite grilled New York-style rib-eye, roasted baby onions, pommes puree, zucchini, and Béarnaise sauce…which pairs perfectly with an “I dare you” sweet and smokey cocktail made with a mix of rum, lime juice, black cherry syrup and homemade bacon syrup! For something with a little kick, try the delicately deboned chicken thighs smothered in peppadew pesto, served with a jalapeño feta croquette, butter-fried potato fondant, snap peas and harissa yoghurt. If seafood is your preference, char siu glazed line fish with crushed five-spice potatoes, roasted carrot and pineapple puree, glazed bok choy and Asian-infused tomato lime salsa might get your attention, or laksa prawn and chicken curry on saffron-infused basmati rice Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

with tempura prawn on the side could be ‘it’ for you. Vegetarians are not forgotten on 3SIXTY’s new menu – light and fluffy herb gnocchi with basil pesto cream, braised heirloom tomatoes and wild rocket is served with an unusual ‘arch’ of a grilled parmesan cheese crumb bake. Chef Blake’s culinary genius extends right through to dessert as the menu takes indulgence to a whole new level – white chocolate cheesecake on Oreo crumbs served with an Oreo macaron and dark chocolate gelato and a shot of caramel topped with charred marshmallow on the side. But the deconstructed tiramisu deserves special mention: Jack Daniels chocolate, hazelnut and orange tiramisu, hazelnut syrup with an orange zest glaze. New on the 3SIXTY menu is a journey for the senses – a tasting menu served as a six-course, eight-course or 10-course meal, with the option of wine pairing. Available at deliciously competitive prices, the menu is served at 3SIXTY’s chef ’s bench, with a birdseye view of the kitchen and the restaurant’s talented chefs. Of course 3SIXTY’s mixologists will still whip up old favourites like the Italian Hugo - pronounced “Ugo” – a combination of elderflower syrup, Prosecco and mint; but new additions which are begging to be tried include a peach and ginger margarita with a salt rim. 3SIXTY ticks all the boxes for a glamourous night out with extraordinary food in an upmarket setting. Slava's Snowshow storms into Jozi
F
Immerse yourself in a magical world of dreams and imagination, interactively reliving your childhood ankle-deep in snow!
or the first time ever, the multi-award winning, critically acclaimed international sensation, Slava’s Snowshow storms into SA this winter. This show brilliantly creates a universal world in a timeless theatrical spectacle while enchanting and empowering the imagination of audiences across the globe, resulting in millions of enthusiastic spectators across all nationalities, genders, beliefs, types and ages. The gradual transformation of the spectator during the show is one of the greatest feats Slava’s Snowshow has to offer. Get ready to be catapulted back to your childhood as Slava’s Snowshow takes you on a uniquely spontaneous, interactive and wildly entertaining journey under a snowy blanket. Over the past 20 years, this unmistakably unique, yet constantly evolving comedy masterpiece has played to millions of people across the globe in more than 120 cities, including New York, London, Sydney, Paris, Rome, Hong Kong, Moscow and Rio de Janeiro. Lauded as a theatre classic of the 20th century by The Times in London, the show’s creator, Slava Polunin, is praised as the most illustrious clown in the world. Critics the world over have raved about the spectacle! “Slava’s Snowshow is as theatrical as it is simple, as involving as it is inspiring,” claims Variety, while London’s Financial Times says the show “spreads a blanket of benevolent charm over the audience, holding
A wordless show that leaves you speechless them spellbound…”, but perhaps the London Daily Telegraph best sums up the experience: “Slava’s Snowshow touches the heart as well as the funny bone. Full of laughter and joy, it is a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed.” Slava’s Snowshow transports you into dream-like places – a bed becomes a boat in a storm-tossed sea; a woman is wrapped in cellophane and becomes flowers in a vase; a child walks in amazement inside a bubble; Slava boards a train and then becomes the train, his chimney-pot hat billowing smoke and a web of unspun cotton envelopes the audiences. Three incredible music experiences Dan Pearce delivered a two CD compilation ‘Fries With That’, launching the mix with a very special intimate Boiler Room party from his favourite Fish and Chip shop in Bristol earlier this year. Recently, Dan has played sets at Snowbombing, Ultra Music Festival and at Coachella as part of JESuS. Bringing it back to downtown Jo’burg, the home of In the City, electronic music fans can look forward to a Friday night kick-off party featuring the best in international and local underground electro, deep house and techno for And Liftoff on 7 October. Renowned for their uncompromising music ethos, the collective of ardent individuals behind the brand are constantly pushing the boundaries of the music that Jo’burg clubbers are exposed to.
On Saturday 8 October, cultural melting pot Braamfontein will be transformed into a tropical beach paradise for the Virgin Mobile Braam Beach Party. Complete with beach sand, palm trees and awesome mobile connectivity, partygoers can make the most of summer in the city – so come dressed in your summer outfits. SA’s best house and hip-hop acts will take to the stage to spin lyrics and turn tables while the sun sets over Nelson Mandela Bridge. Head to Great Dane in Braam on Thursday night 7 July for the big line-up reveal hosted by Virgin Mobile. The pinnacle of the weekend remains the In the City Concert, set in the heart of Jo’burg’s city parks, Emmarentia Dam on Sunday 9 October. The mountain and its surroundings is endowed with some of the best bird habitats in the country (over 450 species) and is also home to a number of special Red Data listed species like the Cape Vulture, Black Stork, as well as the White-backed Night Heron, African Finfoot, Half-collared Kingfisher and African Black Duck that hideaway in the narrows of the Magalies and Crocodile Rivers. he Meander, which straddles the northwest boundary of Gauteng and the southeast boundary of North West Province, is an area renowned for its mountainous and revering beauty. It has an abundance of bird and mammal species and is rich in history. The village of Magaliesburg has been chosen as the centre of the Meander. Being only an hour’s drive along the main arterial routes to Sun City/Rustenburg and Botswana from the major centres of Gauteng, it has become a very popular destination for visitors - both local and foreign.
Birding opportunities in the Magaliesberg
There is also a growing number of shopping and browsing venues - from country home industry, plants and flowers, berry farms, a cheese farm, hand-made leather goods and bric-a-brac to cottage furniture, antiques and art galleries showing local and international artists work. Country weddings, conferences and functions, are catered for by a variety of venues, which have excellent facilities for large or small parties.

The Midlands attraction
Brahman Hills offers a stunning weekend escape for the discerning traveller
Picturesque, serene and charming, it’s impossible not to immediately fall in love with this location. With panoramic views of the mountain range and iridescent hues of the countryside, this location offers all the peace and quiet you need to forget about work and the rat race that is city life. The getaway is worth every cent because you’re guaranteed to return feeling revived, rejuvenated and renewed.

Brahman Hills is neither too commercial nor too remote. Previously known as Windmills and in need of an overhaul, the hotel recently underwent a revamp and is now in pristine condition. The self-catering cottages are outof-this-world adorable, and guests have their own lounge and patio. The rooms have all the luxury amenities you could ask for, plus you can expect a fully equipped kitchen, a cosy fireplace, an excellent Wi-Fi connection and, most importantly, a Jacuzzi with a view! That’s right, Hello Joburgers – after a relatively short three-and-a-half-hour drive, you could be sipping on a glass of red wine while basking in the beauty of the Midlands from your very Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
own Jacuzzi on your private deck. If you can resist, we recommend you wait until sunset to slip into your bathing suit and embrace the serenity that envelopes you and all your senses. While we’re on the topic of sensory experiences, their brand new restaurant is not to be missed! Located in an underground
cellar, you can expect a mellow, snug ambience and intricate and artistically pleasing plates of food. What makes the evening even more romantic is that there’s no Wi-Fi or cell phone reception (bravo, Brahman!). The cuisine certainly fits into the ethos and atmosphere of the hotel, and also promises high standards and a pleasantly gratifying experience. It’s our duty as South Africans to explore our magnificent country, and your next stop just has to be Brahman Hills. Distinctive, tasteful and magical, it gets a double thumbs up from us! hen we want to get out of town for the weekend and travel locally, most of us are after a venue that’s in close proximity to where we live and offers comfortable accommodation and pretty views – otherwise, why would we leave home? One establishment that ticks all these boxes is the beautiful Brahman Hills, situated in the Natal Midlands.

home&decor Ceramic Factory becomes Rialheim This is a story about finding Rialheim-land – a place where dinosaurs come to life when we are fast asleep, and where our dreams become reality when we’re awake.
D
estiny may argue that this magical place was discovered for Ceramic Factory by their forefathers, while fate might insist that Ceramic Factory rediscovered this 200-year-old enchanting farm all on their own. Whichever is true, this wondrous place with its untold stories is a charming farm called Clairvaux in the Cape Winelands.
and inspired the people of Ceramic Factory to reincarnate the homestead, barns and outbuildings after a 27-year absence.
Clairvaux has seen generations of dreamers inspire others through their deeds and ingenuity. Just like his ancestors and Peter Pan’s J.M. Barrie, Rial Visagie, the founder and creative director at Ceramic Factory, believes flying is not a farfetched idea. It’s this fantastical thinking that lead to Rial and the Ceramic Factory team calling Clairvaux home, where the family farm opened its heart
So where does this name come from? The farm’s wine cellar, founded in 1930, launched a semisweet white wine called Rialheim in 1980 in honour of its founder, Rial Kloppers. Rialheim means “Rial’s home” and came about from his insistence that the farm’s homestead always appear on the wine’s labelling to pay homage to his own parents, for whom the home was built. Almost 90 years
In return, the team was eager to honour the people who had provided them with the opportunity to make Clairvaux their home, so, as of June 2016, Ceramic Factory will celebrate this heritage with their new name… Rialheim.
later, Rial Visagie, the grandson of Clairvaux’s Rial Kloppers, has decided to continue this family tradition by renaming Ceramic Factory Rialheim. Rialheim will continue to create ceramics from African clay inspired by their surroundings and heritage as well as local and global trends. Fans can expect inspiring designs familiar to their ceramic collections transferred onto textiles and other mediums, as well as a lighting collection that includes wall, table and hanging pendant lights. Rialheim is proud to add that their products will continue to be available at @home stores, but now under the new Rialheim name. H 5 www.rialheim.co.za

The south african flag
T
he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

We sat down with one of Joburg's hippest indie bands, and this is what they had to say... Tell us something about you guys that will shock us. We’re massive fans of Lorde. I know... it still shocks us too. Oh, and Justin wears two pairs of socks. What the hell? What is it like on the local music scene? Something that seems to be increasingly evident in today's scene compared to, say five years ago, is the sense of an actual community amongst the artists, organisers and everyone in between. It's doing wonders for the scene, and instilling a sense of support rather than competition. South Africa’s music scene is still small – too small to be too competitive, But we still think we are the best. If you had to do it all over again, would you choose the same career? Would you do anything differently? Firstly, we can only dream of making this our full-time careers. We’re all either working full-time or studying full-time so this really does serve as a release to all of those pressures. The ability to get together, have a jam, drink some beers and express ourselves musically to an audience is something we don’t think any of us would ever have done any differently to the way that we have. You learn a lot of things as you go along so we guess things such as our marketing approach or recording process would be slightly more refined and laid out. Whereas the first time around you just have to go with it and see what the end result is. So far, so good.
60
Who are some of your favourite composers, musicians, and bands from the past and present? We have so many. A good indication of our influences would be a run through our vinyl collection. You’ll find LP’s ranging from Jimi Hendrix, T-Rex, Led Zep and The Doors, to Arctic Monkeys, Foals and Queens of the Stone Age, and then the more trippy stuff like Tame Impala, Felix LaBand and Temples. We could go on for hours. Hello Joburg • July 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
What steps have been important in getting people to take you seriously? We’ve always joked that our band motto is “proffessional, on-time and efficient” and as much of a laugh as we have in saying that, it really does go some way in showing organisers, audiences and anyone else that we’re taking this seriously. Any sort of momentum that we might gain via recordings, festivals, tours and so on really does act as a snowball in the band’s ability to keep going, and moving forward. We constantly challenge ourselves to provide a bigger and better experience. That being said, it's just as important to be able to poke fun at yourselves and enjoy the whole experience while it lasts. What are your all-time favourite movies? We wouldn't be able to agree upon one. Ari goes crazy for Princess Diaries, while Justin and Jake have watched Frozen over 10 times. Ghost Rider with Nicolas Cage will always be a classic. What a performance from the Cage. Where will Boxer be in the next 10 years? Playing a reunion show at the Darrenwood Retirement Villages. Slaying old-timers and drinking gin.
