Where did you get the nickname “Lady Nam”? That takes me back to 2010 when I was the MC for MTN at the FIFA World Cup. I was on stage at the Cape Town Fan Fest and my fellow co-host,Vukile Zuma, was getting the crowd of thousands hyped up. When he introduced me, “Lady Nam” seem to roll off his tongue naturally, and it stuck. You’ll be starring in a new Mzansi crime drama called Doubt. What’s your character like? I play Unathi Mweli, a spoilt, affluent, bratty “It Girl”, whose insecurities are displayed as bitchiness. The biggest lesson your parents taught you was… Determination. My mother says I was always confident, a quick learner and determined from a very young age. I think that is

Images Aart Verrips
“The mountains… the trees… even the streams are inhabited by spirits.” So said a turn-of-the-century traveller, who coursed his way through the bewitching forests of the Venda tribe, found in the verdant north of South Africa. With its name emanating from the sacred lake of this warrior tribe who believe they can hear their ancestors drumming beneath its waters at night, Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs journeys into the forest in search of the supreme lightning bird. Abstract renderings of spears inform the collection, slashed on T-shirts and bleeding on knits, while geometric markings characterise this modern African tribe. Traditional fabrics,
with naïve repeat prints, are the canvas for modern silhouettes while still grounded in the land of the ancients. Selected pieces are available at Space Man at The Zone @ Rosebank. H 5 www.fundudzi.com f Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs T @Fundudzi @Fundudzi

Trend Alert: Skincare and Aesthetics Trends
In the past, we had a Hollywood notion of skincare, and equated age-defying looks with plastic surgery and other drastic procedures. However, with advances in aesthetic medicine and non-invasive technologies, there’s a wide array of available treatments that can dramatically alter the skin’s appearance and keep it looking young and healthy. These current procedures, including chemical peels, Botox® and fillers, promise to improve the skin’s radiance, minimise the appearance of fine lines and plump tired, ageing skin while eliminating the fear of pain and require little, if any, recovery time. New procedures on the block are the thread lift (a non-invasive procedure where threads are inserted into the skin to improve collagen production and visibly lift the area) and the Venus Freeze™. The Venus Freeze™ therapy by Venus Concept uses pulsed electromagnetic fields that provide the added benefits of increased oxygen, nutrients, and blood to the skin as well as improve collagen production. Alan and Krishen go to Beauty & Curves for all their aesthetic needs (23 Nicol Road, Bedfordview, Johannesburg, 011 615 7214, beautyncurves.co.za). Father's Day spent with an iconic American brand -
The Ford Mustang
W
hile Janez isn’t up for grabs (sorry, ladies), the Ford Mustang is... er, was. You will have to wait in line to get your hands on one because the car’s release has caused waves of excitement across the country. Men aren’t the only ones getting excited; in fact, the very first person to buy the car 52 years ago was 22-year-old Gail Wise from Chicago.
8
So, why is there so much hype in SA half a century after Mustang’s first sale? Since 17 April 1964, when Gail made her smart purchase, the right-hand drive Ford Mustang hasn’t been available in South Africa... until now! Not surprisingly, the model has already been sold out through 2017! If that isn’t proof of some serious demand, then we don’t know what is. Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
And while the limited availability of the vehicle means that many won’t be seeing their favourite toy under the Christmas tree later this year, Janez Vermeiren got a step closer to his dream car. “I’ve been a fan of classic Mustangs since I was a young boy. In fact, I hope to own one. Mustang is an iconic brand and car,” says the father-of-three.
Janez on fatherhood
So much action in April It has been a big year so far for both our cover stars. Janez Vermeiren married his long-term partner, Juliana Vasconcelos, in January and they welcomed their third son into the world in April. No stranger to fatherhood, Janez shared some advice to all the new dads out there, “Don’t stress too much – being a dad comes naturally. A lot of first-time parents freak out, and my best advice is to be relaxed and as calm as possible.”
You know what it’s like to grow up with a dad in the limelight. How will you manage this for your children?
Being in the public eye as a TV presenter and media personality coupled with his travelling and work schedule takes its toll when it comes to spending time with his family, but the proud dad and dedicated hubby has his priorities in order. “No matter how busy I am, I always make sure my family comes first and I try my best to spend as much time with them as possible. When I’m travelling abroad, I make use of Skype, calls and SMSes.”
What do you love most about being a dad? The unconditional love I have for my kids. Bedtime stories, morning cuddles and just making my family laugh.
I generally like to isolate my private life from the media, but I will guide my kids in any direction they choose to go. When they reach that stage, I will, however, warn them about the ins and outs of the media world. How important is it for people in the entertainment industry to have other business ventures, such as your modelling agency Full Circle Model Management. I realised many years ago that I wasn’t going to be a TV presenter for a long time, so what I have effectively done is build a successful company through my media career. I have two successful businesses I’m running at the moment. T @janez_vermeiren

Hello Joburg thought it fitting for our Father’s Day issue to pair one of our favourite dads – SABC3’s Man Cave star, Janez Vermeiren – with the iconic American Mustang. Ladies and gents, you are both very welcome.
cover feature
The Ford Mustang isn't just a car - it's a lifestyle April was a big month for Mustang, too, and fans around the world celebrated National Mustang Day on the 17th of April. That’s right – Mustang has its own day, proving that, for many, Mustang isn’t just a car, it’s a lifestyle. Every year, those lucky enough to own one hit the road and unite in order to honour the iconic brand’s birthday. This year, South Africa joined in the hype, and Hello Joburg partnered with Ford South Africa, the Da Vinci Hotel and the Hard Rock Café to celebrate #MustangDay2016, and the turnout was something to write home about, so we did. Once you’ve checked out our website (www.hellojoburg.co.za) for pics from the evening, immediately make a note for 17 April 2017 on your calendar if you don’t want to miss out next year. Mustang madness! The hype surrounding the Ford Mustang is thanks in big part to the creative way the car was launched. Originally a concept vehicle, pictures were circulated through the press, causing an avalanche of excited letters, asking if Ford would take the next step and turn their concept into a reality. The world loves something new, so when Ford Executive Lee Iacocca, who spearheaded the development of the Mustang, introduced the car, he did so as a new line for Ford, with versatility as its key attribute. The Mustang was to be an economical, compact car with the style of an expensive European model along with high performance capabilities. “We don’t claim the Mustang is a universal car, or that it can be all things to all people,” Iacocca told the press, “but we do believe the Mustang will be more things to more people than any other automobile on the road. We like to think that in the process we have achieved a new dimension in American motoring – perhaps in world motoring.” Their strategy worked. On the day of the Mustang’s release in 1964, 22 000 of the cars were sold. By the end of the year, 418 810 were on the road, and two years later, the Ford Mustang was making over a million motor heads very happy. H

Mywinter three must-have gadgets
Spending time outdoors in the fresh air is not my idea of fun when it’s freezing outside; I’d much rather spend that time stocking up on funky must-have gadgets to help me get through the winter months. These are my top picks: The Hot Cookie USB Cup Warmer For just under R220 on za.mobilefun.com, you can get your hands around a warm cup of coffee no matter the office aircon settings. This adorable USB-charged Hot Cookie Cup Warmer plugs into your computer and is able to keep your drink heated at a toasty 50 degrees Celsius. It’s super cute, too!

It’s great for those dark winter-morning treks to the car or for a quick run before work. The light is activated simply by turning it and it can take a bit of a beating, too. The Fitbit Blaze Other than being able to tell me when I need to limit the number of marshmallows in my hot chocolate, the Fitbit Blaze comes with a host of fitness features to appeal to a spectrum of athletes. Whether you’re counting calories or running marathons, you’ll find a use for this clever device. It has a built-in heartrate monitor, step-counter and an onscreen workouts option. It brags an awfully similar design to the Apple Watch and I’m sure there will be new straps released for it very soon. They’re available at your nearest iStore. H

Buying a diamond for investment purposes is different to purchasing a beautiful piece of jewellery. For instance, a diamond that would look magnificent in a necklace might not be appropriate as an investment. It's unlikely that a diamond purchased over the counter will make a solid investment. That said, once you have purchased a diamond as an investment, you can always have it set in a piece of jewellery without this affecting its value - although selecting a well-known designer, recognised for his craftsmanship, will of course enhance the piece. dining out Gloriously gratifying
Glenda’s Glenda’s restaurant has a certain je ne sais quoi. Intricate in its details and divine in its ingredients, this restaurant is in a league of its own and is a great new addition to the City of Gold.
G
lenda’s is bound to leave a lasting first impression, and the first thing you’ll notice about this elaborate restaurant is the décor and ambience, which are elegant and sophisticated, yet not pretentious. The romantic feel of the restaurant will transport you from a venue adjacent to a Johannesburg parking lot to the sidewalks of Champs-Élysées in Paris. Do yourself a favour and remember to arrive 30 minutes before your reservation to indulge in a fabulous cocktail at the white marble bar. We loved their salted caramel and popcorn martini, which is also on their dessert menu,
and we recommend the French 75, which is made using fynbos gin, Rooibos syrup, lime and sparkling wine – it is sublime! The food menu is simple yet decadent. We particularly love their seafood starters; the salt and pepper calamari is a glorious combination of sweet and umami tastes, and the gravadlax – delicately cured salmon served on top of a seeded, crusted wafer – is one of the best things you’ll eat this year. They’re best paired with a glass of the ornate Chamonix Rouge. For mains, we recommend the salmon fishcake or the steak and chips, which we chose to have with the optional sage fried egg. Heavily focused on flavour and aesthetics, you’re guaranteed to marvel in a few melt-in-themouth moments.

With all that training and experience, the job still comes with its own set of challenges, especially here at home. “It’s a challenge to change the mindset in the food industry in South Africa so that people become more adventurous in experimenting with different combinations instead of the “old school” way of cooking. With it being Father’s Day this month, we asked Chef what the best advice was that he ever received from his dad. “That would have to be, work hard and enjoy every minute.” As for Chef ’s advice for aspiring chefs, he says “Always keep it fresh, clean and tasty. Do not overcomplicate dishes. Experiment, keep it simple and gain as much experience as you can in different restaurants.” H
Harvest Grill & Wine at Carnival City has a wonderful 3 course set menu specially for Father's Day. Why not treat dad to delicious meal prepared by Chef Rylan R. Ramsamy? The cost is R215 per person and it’s only available on the 19th of June. To book, call 011 898 7526.

So, how does it all work? You book, bring your own booze, and indulge in an eight-course feast fit for royalty. How do tender, juicy Vietnamese chicken spring rolls sound? Or hot pots fired up with marinated fillet? We loved the traditional dim sum made from pork mince, shitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, spring onions and water chestnuts served with Chez magic sauce. Surprising even ourselves, we managed to leave space for dessert – an Oreo cookie banoffee pie served inside a jar. Need we say more? Set in a charming old Houghton mansion, Suyen cooks right in front of your eyes, making this your very own private show. She is cheerful, rambunctious and passionate about cooking, and she has an intricate understanding of Asian-style cooking – it’s impossible not to fall in love with her contagious cheer or her culinary creations. What a treat it was! Joburgers, we all deserve to be exposed to the best food in the city and this is certainly one of our top picks. SPINNER
for June 2016
Although most of us don’t want to admit it, winter is officially here! Gone are the days of palm trees and daiquiris, and instead we’re welcoming cosy blankets and copious cups of hot chocolate. I don’t know about you, but each winter my hair becomes dry and unmanageable – a difficult combination of split ends and dry frizz. Well, this season I’m not going to let my locks get me down, so here is my winter hair survival guide. Girlz Only Dry Shampoo R49.00 Not only will you save water, you’ll save some money, too. This product is affordable, easy-to-use and will ensure your locks are as luscious as ever.

Cipria Milano All-In-One Intensive Mask R129.00 Italian brand Cipria Milano has finally landed in South Africa, and their hair mask promises to benefit your hair in ten different ways.
Denman hairbrush R80.00 Let loose with this highly efficient detangling brush. I absolutely love it because it fits inside my handbag and my budget, and it has smooth ball-end pins for comfortable styling. Hask Hot Oils R49.95 I’m obsessed with these because they’re free of sulfates, parabens and gluten! My favourite is the Monoi Coconut Oil – not only does it smell heavenly, it also adds extra moisture, which is crucial in wintertime. Hask’s Argan Oil is a must for those who suffer from weak and damaged hair.

Denman Mini Bun Rings R49.00 These were all the rave at Coachella 2016, plus these magical bun rings are perfect to use when your hair is unruly and slightly dirty.
ADVISE FROM THE EXPERT I sat down with Maryke Oosthuizen from Terenzo Hairdressing International, who shared these key tips on how to keep hair healthy this winter:
David Gilson from Carlton Hair Hyde Park shares his top three products to combat dry and damaged hair. Naturaltech Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner R330.00
1. Limit the number of times you shampoo you hair. Shampoo washes away dirt, but it also washes away natural oils that nourish and moisturise your scalp. If you can maintain a healthy scalp by minimising shampooing in winter, your hair will thank you. 2. Salon treatments are the way to go for dry or damaged hair – we recommend the Terenzo Professional Haircare Moisture Rush Treatment or the Terenzo Professional Haircare Liquid Hair Treatment. Both are moisture- and protein-rich treatments, and are suitable for thick, medium and fine hair.
Naturaltech Nourishing Hair Building Pak - R405.00
3. Take care of your hair at home with nourishing masks, heat protector, leave-in conditioner and argan oil. Remember that hairspray can be damaging when styling, so ensure your hairspray does not have too much alcohol in it as it strips natural oils and splits ends.

Q&A with Dr Reza Mia
Who is Dr Reza in five words? Funny. Motivated. Caring. Creative. Different.
How did your Medical and Health Aesthetics practice come about? Following the introduction of Dr Robert Rey’s skincare range, I began to appreciate the public interest in specific creams that provide milder but similar results to aesthetic treatments. I decided to help patients by combining my artistic side with my practical experience in trauma and plastic surgery. Why do you think there is sometimes negativity surrounding aesthetic procedures? Badly done lips, cheeks and eyes are very obvious and this scares people away from the aesthetic medical field. Faces that are done well, on the other hand, look natural, and this means that people on the street do not perceive these well done faces as ones that have been worked on. Therefore, people do not get a chance to undo the negative perception previously created. The only way to convince these patients is through positive wordof-mouth referrals, by showing them successful before-and-after images, and, of course, by experiencing it themselves.
32
With such an incredibly busy schedule, what do you like to do in your spare time? I exercise by going to gym and doing cardio and martial arts. I enjoy movies, reading, art and music, although I haven’t really had a chance to play with my guitar and drums in a few years. I Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
also have many pets and love spending time with friends.
You’re a benefactor of the Smile Foundation - why is this so important to you? It is everyone’s responsibility to do what we can for those in need, and this is my small way of contributing to a worthy cause. I like the direct change that the Smile Foundation can make to children and families. In your opinion, what is the definition of beauty? Real beauty is on the inside and exists in every person. Aesthetic beauty is not about being flawless or fake, but looking like the best version of yourself. It is important to understand that there are countless versions of beauty and there are no mathematical formulae that predict the beauty of a human face. The goal is to keep people looking like themselves minus the aspects of their faces and bodies that create insecurities for the patients. Confidence only adds to beauty. What advice would you give to women looking to get aesthetic procedures? Speak to people who have been to the doctor you’re considering going to. Nothing beats referrals, but if you can’t find anyone, do your homework and go to an experienced doctor who is respected for their results. Once you find a doctor you can trust, allow them to assess your concerns and recommend treatments that will work for your unique
face. If you’re not 100 per cent certain, don’t be shy to get a second opinion. What myths about aesthetic procedures are most common within your industry? There are a few interesting ones. The one that claims Botox will freeze your face or make you look like your face has been pulled back is completely false. Botox should be tailored to the patient’s unique needs, and if it’s done correctly, it will not leave patients expressionless and it will never give patients a “pulled back” appearance. Some people say that fillers will result in a face that looks like it has been inflated, but it takes a lot of filler to look like that. It is the doctor’s responsibility to keep patients looking natural and to remember what their customers initially looked like so that they can advise them accordingly. Scan For Life - the original preventive scanning medical centre in South Africa.
M
edical research has consistently shown that the early detection of serious disease processes, well in advance of noticeable symptoms, leads to more effective management with increased survival rates. Preventive Scanning is the specialised medical field which screens asymptomatic or apparently well individuals for the earliest stages of serious diseases, long before symptoms develop. Although preventive scanning is widely practiced abroad, it is only now that the technology and medical expertise are available in South Africa. At Scan For Life, we perform responsible scans that comply with international medical practices. Our expert doctors are accredited and internationally trained medical specialists in Preventative Imaging. Brain For Life – The Brain and Neck Angiogram Scans Strokes are a major cause of death and disability, but there are often no symptoms until a significant event occurs. MRI or CT scans of the brain and neck are the most accurate non-invasive tests to detect aneurysms, malformations, cholesterol deposits, artery narrowings, and early brain lesions such as tumours and multiple sclerosis – all of which cause strokes. The scans are non-invasive and require no skin incision or catheter tube insertion into the arteries. Exec For Life – The Customised Targeted Scans The drive of executives for success generates great stress and places strain on their health, particularly their cardiovascular system, and their risk for heart disease increases significantly. Scan For Life provides a flexible combination of targeted scans that cover these dreaded diseases. They include the Heart For Life, Colon For Life, Lung For Life and Brain For Life Scans, which are combined into a single-sitting scan series. Heart For Life – The Coronary Artery Calcium Score and Angiogram Scans Coronary artery disease (CAD) and the resultant heart attack or heart failure is the leading cause of death in Westernised adult males and females, far exceeding deaths due to all cancers and strokes combined. The risk of CAD climbs exponentially in middle age, yet most people with significant CAD have no symptoms and may perform normally in

a cardiac examination and ECG test, and 50% of heart-attack victims have normal cholesterol. Unfortunately, for up to 80% of people, the first symptom of CAD is a heart attack. and as many as 85% of all heart attacks are preventable if CAD is diagnosed early enough. The simple Calcium Score Scan is an excellent predictor of both the severity of CAD and of future coronary event risk. The comprehensive Angiogram Scan diagnoses the presence of all types of plaque in the artery walls as well as early blockages. Heart For Life Scans are the most accurate, non-invasive tests available to detect CAD. Colon For Life – The Virtual Colonoscopy Scan Colorectal Cancer is the second most common cancer in men (after lung) and the third most common cancer in women (after lung and breast), and it usually affects men and women over the age of 40. The five-year relative survival rate is 90% if diagnosed at an early stage, however, once the cancer has spread, the survival rate drops to less than 10%. This scan of the large bowel is the most accurate non-invasive test to detect small polyps and early treatable cancers. Other bowel abnormalities, as well as all the other abdominal and pelvic organs, are simultaneously assessed on the scan. The scan is non-invasive with no needle, anaesthetic, sedation, scope pipe or barium liquid insertion. It is formally recommended by the American Cancer Society. Lung For Life – The Lung Scan More people – men and women – die of lung cancer than of all other cancers combined. Smokers have a 20 times greater risk of succumbing to the disease, and the average five-year survival rate is currently only 15%. However, if lung cancer is detected in its earliest stage, a survival rate of more than 80% is attainable. Unfortunately, these cancers are typically large and advanced by the time they are diagnosed, as they can grow undetected for years before symptoms develop. The Lung Scan is the most sensitive and accurate test available for detecting the smallest lung cancers, just a few millimetres in size. These early stage cancers can be removed and are potentially curable. Other lung abnormalities, such as early emphysema as well as all the other chest structures are simultaneously assessed on the scan. The scan is totally noninvasive with no needle required, and is performed in a single short breath-hold.
Your Experience When you contact Scan For Life, a trained consultant will assist you with an individualised scan protocol, appropriate for your medical risk factors and based on international screening guidelines. You may also schedule a pre-scan consultation with one of our doctors if you are not certain of your recommended protocol. When you arrive for your scan, a consultant will carefully explain the process while preparations are made and a medical questionnaire is completed. You are then taken to the scanner room. The CT scans are completed in a breath-hold or two and the MRI scans in less than half an hour, but you may be on the table for longer while preparations are made and the scans checked. After the scan, your report-back consultation is scheduled. At your report-back consultation, you meet directly with a doctor and discuss your report while viewing your scans interactively. Once the doctor has taken you on a 3D virtual tour of your vital organs, you will receive a full medical report, CD disk of colour 3D images and video clips and hard copy images. The scan data is archived at Scan For Life in the event a follow-up is required at a later date. If necessary, you may be referred back to your own medical practitioner, or if requested, to a support network of expert doctors. Consider having a scan if... You’re over 40 years of age, your family has a history of heart disease or cancer, you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, you’re a smoker or have a history with smoking, you’re overly stressed, live an inactive lifestyle or are overweight. raceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club, an exciting entertainment getaway destination in Secunda, has recently completed an upgrade of its children’s facilities. Already synonymous with family-friendly entertainment and hosting a wide variety of activities just a short drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Graceland has allocated significant budget and resources to the upgrade.
for the more competitive drivers and is great for family outings and team buildings. Thunder Valley is operational from Tuesdays to Thursdays between 12pm and 10pm, and from Fridays to Sundays between 10am and 10pm.
According to the General Manager, Willem van Rooyen, providing exceptional familyfriendly entertainment is one of Graceland’s top priorities. “We want the entire family to feel spoilt for choice with a variety of activities from which to choose – both indoor and outdoor. Parents can create memorable moments together with their children, or take advantage of our supervised childcare facilities so that they can enjoy some downtime on their own.”
Brand new children’s play equipment has also been introduced to two of Graceland’s most popular eateries, Blue Bayou and Madison’s Bistro. Blue Bayou, the property’s New Orleans-themed restaurant, now boasts an outdoor modular play system overlooking the swimming pool, as well as two new trampolines. Madison’s Bistro and Family Restaurant, a New York loft-style eatery, also offers a dedicated indoor play area with TVs, gaming and a colouring-in station.
The most exciting change has been the addition of a brand new Thunder Valley gocart track at Graceland. With state-of-the-art go-carts and a digital clocking system, the 310-metre track offers the perfect challenge

nightlife A 150-year-old heritage brand
H
ello Joburg chats to Mr Alfred Cointreau, the man behind the 150-year-old French brand of triple sec. Some have said you’re too young to be in charge of a 150-year-old heritage brand. What would you say to them? 167 years, to be precise! If La Maison Cointreau is what it is today, it is because our philosophy is to give opportunities to the young generation. Look at Cointreau itself, the orange liqueur – the creator, the second generation of the family, was less than 30 years old when he perfected the recipe in 1875. The previous generation gave him a chance to express his creativity. Look, my grandfather, he was born in 1921, he never switched on a computer – he did not even have an email address! But Cointreau is very present on the digital scene today because he let the youngest generation express themselves. You have to start one day; the younger you start, the better you can become.
38
Why are you so passionate about the liqueur? I was born into a family of “distillateur liquoriste”. That means we know how to extract the best from natural fruits. We also take care of a unique savoir faire: the distillation. To combine both, we need men and women. The most exciting thing about distillation is the people around it, including the distiller, the employees at the distillery and the bartenders. The most Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
passionate part of my job, even before tasting liqueurs, is meeting and sharing with people. Where do you get the inspiration for your triple sec cocktails? Cointreau, the original triple sec, is already the base of 350 classic cocktails, so I can find my inspiration in classic cocktail books. I also love to twist these classic recipes. Seasonal ingredients from different countries also inspire me when I travel, and they’re perfect to add a twist to recipes. What is your take on drinking responsibly? Less is more! In my professional and personal life, I do not drink too much. What I like is enjoying something good, unique and unexpected. It could be a straight spirit, on ice or a cocktail mixed after a discussion with a bartender. It’s more about quality and authenticity for me rather than quantity. Try it, you’ll see the difference. What is your favourite drink to make? That depends on who will drink it and at what time I make it. If I am with my wife for a romantic dinner, I’ll make a cosmopolitan. When I am with friends before a party, I’ll make sidecars or margaritas. On a summer afternoon around the pool, I love a Cointreau Fizz (one part Cointreau, two parts sparkling water and juice of half a fresh lime). Each different moment of your day could have an appropriate cocktail; you just need to find the right one. Where in Joburg is your ultimate afterwork drink hangout? I am just in Johannesburg for 24 hours,
If La Maison Cointreau is what it is today, it is because our philosophy is to give opportunities to the young generation. which, unfortunately, is not enough time to fully appreciate the city, but I went to a beautiful place called Landmark to have drinks – their cocktails are amazing. Matching food and drink has become the norm. What’s your advice when pairing your 150-year-old French brand? Keep the authenticity of your beverages. Cointreau is a unique orange liqueur which is still made in the place it was created, like French wine or Champagne. Associate it with an authentic meat or fish recipe. You never hesitate to open a bottle of wine, so don’t hesitate to do the same with spirits. H 5 www.cointreau.co.za f CointreauSA

he Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC) is proud to announce the launch of Studio Joburg, a fully-fledged film and television content hub. Based at the JEC, Studio Joburg is the result of a collaboration between the owners of the Expo Centre and a consortium of leading film practitioners.
of Johannesburg. People living in Soweto and the surrounding areas will also be able to work closer to home.” Discussions are currently taking place with a film school and broadcaster that could become anchor tenants within the Studio Joburg facility. “The added benefit of this would be the proximity to the potential workforce from Soweto and its surrounds,” explains Newman.
“We believe that this new development will provide a top-class facility for the production of content within the film industry,” explains Craig Newman, JEC CEO. “It will also be an important development for the people of Soweto and the surrounding areas in terms of job creation and skills development.” For many years, South Africa has been a popular destination for the production of filmed content for the US and Europe, and has become a desirable film location as well as a co-production partner of choice.
Eddie Mbalo, who joins Newman and his team in this endeavour, is a film and television production expert with over 30 years’ experience in the industry. Mbalo served as the CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) for 10 years, a statutory body within the Ministry of Arts and Culture, dedicated to the promotion and development of the South African film industry. At the 64th Cannes Film Festival, the Hollywood Reporter in association with Agoralumiere International, honoured Mbalo with an African Vision Award for his role as a creative defender of African Cinema.
The film value chain consists of several support services that are crucial to the completion and success of each film project. These services include set-building, painting, catering, wardrobe, design, and lighting to name a few. “Each of these support services means several job opportunities for people in the area,” explains Newman. “In other words, this venture will mean skills development, job creation and investment into the south Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za
“We believe that the Expo Centre is the ideal location for an undertaking of this nature,” says Mbalo. In addition to the sheer size of the venue, it’s extremely practical. There is an adequate power supply with access to plug points all over the venue and a sufficient water and ablution supply,” he says. The multipurpose facilities of the JEC
provide more than 50 000m² of indoor space, more than 100 000m² of versatile outdoor space, as well as a multipurpose arena that can accommodate up to 20 000 people. It is accessible from all major highways and conveniently located 30 minutes away from both OR Tambo International Airport and Lanseria Airport. There are also a number of three-, four- and five-star hotels all within 15 minutes of the venue. The Expo Centre has also proven its worth among film producers in the past, having provided facilities for the famous science fiction thriller, District 9, directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. “The JEC was an ideal venue for our production of District 9,” says producer Michael Murphey. “It worked extremely well as a film studio – the size, the layout, and the location all worked perfectly for us.” “We believe that Studio Joburg will become an important content and entertainment hub for the Gauteng province,” says Mbalo. “It’s an exciting venture that will benefit in particular the people of Johannesburg and Soweto,” he concludes. ust three hours away from Joburg, this conveniently located destination is also a cherished one, and it’s the kind of place that just feels like home – unaffected, cosy and oh so comfy. Not only will you be mesmerised by its beauty, its picturesque charm and whimsical nature will leave you wanting more, and the out-ofthis-world views make for an unforgettable weekend away. WHERE TO STAY Glowing and golden, Omega Luxury Mountain Retreat is the ideal location for some well-deserved R&R. We loved the sheer delight of driving into the mountain hills, and we were in awe of the uninterrupted mountain peaks.

need. The golden autumn leaves and jewelled pathways were authentically enchanting, and it’s unbelievably quiet and peaceful – all you can hear is the greetings of jovial cows and hummingbirds. Open-plan and luxurious, there is much to be said about the eclectic and unique design of these cabins, which also boast a romantic outdoor Jacuzzi. There’s nothing better than prune-like skin holding a glass of red wine, staring across the landscape. It’s the greatest adventure and a super spoil! Expect flat-screen TVs, a working 3G connection and complete self-catering amenities – there is even a two-cup coffee plunger in the kitchen. The south african flag
T
he South African national flag was first flown in April 1994, after the first free election in South Africa. It is designed by Frederick G Brownell and is the only flag in the world with six colours. The flag means different things to different people. According to the flag’s designer, the red symbolizes the blood that was shed during the various wars and conflicts in the country. It is also suggested that the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that flank the country. The green symbolises the farms and the rich, natural environment of the country, while the yellow represents the natural resources, particularly gold. Finally, it is said that the black represents black South Africans, while the white represents the white population of the country. Source: www.southafrica.org.za

Ilana Jossel
7theminutes with co-founders of The Stylista
Hello Joburg had the privilege of sitting down with the power pairing co-founders and creators of The Stylista, Ilana Jossel and Tami Ruschin. Describe The Stylista in three words. Real Street Style. Who are your fashion icons and which trendsetters do you draw inspiration from? Ilana: Known for her glamorous, effortless and 70s modern style, Rachel Zoe is my number-one fashion icon. I love how fashion has been ingrained into all aspects of who she is as an individual. When it comes to drawing inspiration from a trendsetter, Julie Sarinana from Sincerely Jules is my go-to girl. She is the most famous name on the streets for her cool Californian style, and she never shies away from bold colours, intriguing prints and daring combinations. Tami: Named as the most influential personality of the international fashion world, Chiara Ferragni from The Blonde Salad is definitely my fashion icon. She stays true to her love of street style and her freedom of expression, and I admire her determination and drive! Other trendsetters who I absolutely love are Tash and Elle, BFFs from the popular fashion destination blog They All Hate Us. I love how these best friends shared the same love for fashion and made it happen. As working moms, how do you balance it all? Teach us! We are extremely blessed and lucky to have strong support structures around us. The help of our devoted husbands and families has pushed us that much harder to make our dreams a reality. Our passions and visions for The Stylista have been cemented even more firmly within us, as the love and encouragement we receive from our families and husbands is immeasurable. Tell us more about The Stylista’s trend-driven community. Ilana: They are an influential audience of trendsetters, enthusiasts and style-seekers who inspire each other and share their street style photography.

Tami: The Stylista’s community includes students, fashion designers, bloggers, photographers, musicians, stylists, artists, graphic designers and models – anyone Hello Joburg • June 2016 • Hellojoburg.co.za

1 “Make it shine” by voting for styles that you like or find inspiring. 2 Follow your favourite users to keep up to date with trends. 3 Interact with others by giving positive feedback on their outfits. 4 Promote your blog, website, boutique, photography, etc. who is looking for fashion inspiration or to inspire others with their own individual street style. Name three things you cannot live without. Ilana: Coffee, sneakers and chilli. Tami: Cell phone, gym and notebook. What do you love most about South African fashion? Ilana: The African continent has always been a place of curiosity and interest as far back as we can remember. Rich in heritage and cultural aesthetic, the great love for our continent has been translated beautifully into truly iconic street style. Tami: The beauty of this diverse continent we call home is the richness of individuality that can be seen everywhere. Africans use fashion to express who they are as individuals and are not afraid to go against the grain. H
