Can you believe it! There are only 61 days left until 2014! Walking through Joburg’s shopping malls this past month, I couldn’t help feeling a huge sense of joy and excitement for what’s to come… The Festive Season! This month we’ve taken special care in compiling our second last edition of the year in order not to miss any of the important social events and top leisure activities available in Jozi. Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to Mr. Thulani Nzima, the Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism for the fantastic welcome letter to our readers. Mr Thulani, you have truly captured the essence of our beautiful country and I hope that all international visitors will explore this great nation to it’s fullest! On the front cover this month is the hit theatrical show of the year, Aladdin, which is directed by the highly acclaimed, Janice Honeyman. Playing the role of the villain, Jaffar is the one and only Jeremy Mansfield. Another very exciting event happing in Jozi this month is the launch of the internationally know restaurant chain, Hard Rock Café! This awesome eating and entertainment establishment is more rock concert then restaurant and patrons will not be disappointed. Hard Rock Café will open on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton at the end of November. If you’re visiting South Africa for the first time and would like to experience true South African hospitality then you have to head on over to The Maslow Hotel for their newly launched ‘Sunday Gourmet Braai’. With a mouthwatering selection of starts, mains and desert, you will not leave hungry! AT LAST! HE’S BACK IN OUR CITY! SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST POPULAR RADIO PERSONALITY SWOOPS ONTO THE JOBURG PANTO STAGE

J

remy Mansfield Stars As Abanazar in Janice Honeyman’s Magical Pantomime Aladdin From 1996 to 2010, JEREMY MANSFIELD was voted - year after year - the Best Radio Personality. His popularity from 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s THE RUDE AWAKENING, SABC2’s A WORD OR 2 and M-Net’s LAUGH OUT LOUD is now legendary. His charity work with THE CHRISTMAS WISH is almost unsurpassed. His books VROT JOKES, ZHOOZSH! and ZHOOZSH! FAKING IT! are bestsellers.

“at long last, you can catch the unique JEREMY MANSFIELD live on stage” And now, at long last, you can catch the unique JEREMY MANSFIELD live on stage in 81 performances of this year’s pantomime at Joburg Theatre, Janice Honeyman’s ALADDIN - with the ever-popular ingredients of comedy in abundance, stunning sets, beautiful costumes, plenty of boos and hisses and an Aladdin’s cave full of surprises.

Hello Johannesburg November 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

“stunning sets, beautiful costumes, plenty of boos and hisses and an Aladdin’s cave full of surprises.” ALADDIN offers a world of magic, mystery and mayhem…and a truly stylish villain who is sure to bring adults and children alike their very own ‘rude awakening’! “We’ve been after Jeremy for years,”

says the panto’s executive producer, Bernard Jay, “but when an actor is going to work at three in the morning to prepare his radio show, it just isn’t practical to also fit in nine performances a week of a stage show! I’m thrilled he’s finally said yes. Pantomime stars need to be larger-than-life personalities, so who better than Jeremy?”

“ALADDIN offers a world of magic, mystery and mayhem” BankservAfrica proudly brings you the Joburg Theatre production of

advertorial Janice Honeyman’s ALADDIN – a new, star-studded and fun-packed pantomime. Grab your magic carpet and come on an exciting adventure with Aladdin as he ventures into the Cave of Treasures to retrieve the legendary lamp containing the most outrageous Genie of them all! But watch out for the evil sorcerer, Abanazar, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the lamp so he can become the most powerful man in the universe…

“Grab your magic carpet and come on an exciting adventure with Aladdin” Once again, writer/director Janice Honeyman has brought together some of the finest musical theatre talent in the country. CHRISTOPHER JAFTHA plays the title role of Aladdin. Christopher has an impressive list of stage musical credits to his name, including Saturday Night Fever, High School Musical, Footloose, The Boys In The Photograph, Mamma Mia! and Dirty Dancing. He is also now one of the most well recognised faces in print and television commercials in South Africa through his highly successful

parallel career as a model. Aladdin’s cheeky brother, Wishee Washee, is played by the irrepressible BONGI MTHOMBENI. Fresh from his huge personal success on The Mandela stage in the role of Poppa McCoy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS, ALADDIN will be Bongi’s third consecutive Joburg Theatre panto, following his huge popularity as one of the Top 10 finalists on the sixth season of M-Net’s Idols in 2010.

“CHRISTOPHER JAFTHA plays the title role of Aladdin The Genie of the Lamp is played by TIMOTHY MOLOI” The Genie of the Lamp is played by TIMOTHY MOLOI. With his smoothas-velvet voice and masterful range, Timothy Moloi is an established singer with a talent that has been likened to those of some of the all-time greats. His double SAMA nominated debut album Love That Music was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. This year, the colourful and often outrageous ‘dame’ role of Aladdin’s widowed (but-ever-on-the-look-out)

mother is played by Capetonian DARRON ARAUJO. This is Darron’s first panto, although his prior theatre work includes the roles of Stanley in the original production of Champ, Cornwall in Guy de Lancey’s King Lear and Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet. The full company of the panto also includes Joanna Abatzoglou, Stefan Carstens, Keaton Ditchfield, Londiwe Dhlomo, Stefania Du Toit, Richard Sinclair Gau, Michelle Lane, Weslee Swain Lauder, Brandon Lindsay, Noni Mkhonto, Pulane Rampoana, Zolani Shangase, Dionne Song, Lebo Toko and Bryony Whitfield. ALADDIN opens on the stage of The Mandela at Joburg Theatre on October 30th and runs until December 29th 2013. As usual, the family spectacular is produced for Joburg Theatre by Bernard Jay, with Simon James and Claire Pacariz as his Associate Producers.

“Aladdin’s widowed (butever-on-thelook-out) mother is played by Capetonian DARRON ARAUJO.” Don’t miss this annual favourite of

the South African theatre calendar – the Janice Honeyman pantomime! Hop on your magic carpet and get your tickets to ALADDIN today. Prices for performances are from R180 to R290 on sale now by visiting www.joburgtheatre.com, or by calling the theatre’s direct ticketing line on 0861 670 670. THE GRILL ON GRANT 15 Northfield Avnue, Glenhazel 011 440 3752 www.grillongrant.co.za The Grill On Grant is a contemporary restaurant, which has a natural vibe that practically guarantees a dining experience of note!

It looks like a steakhouse. Mmmm, it smells like a steakhouse. And it certainly tastes like a steakhouse. But Karoo Cattle & Land is more than just a steakhouse. It’s a top steak-based restaurant. And a South African one at that, featuring traditional SA fare like bobotie and boerewors, as well as steaks cut from the very best South African beef. Although famous for its red meat and ribs, KC&L’s menu caters for all tastes and includes a sumptuous selection of the freshest SA fish and poultry, a choice of vegetarian dishes and free salads. The presence of the oceans is never far away, reaching beyond the coastline and further inland. Here in the Western Cape, winter rains soak the soils and summer warmth ripens the vines but slowly. Cooling sea breezes and mists lower the temperatures so the grapes can develop in their own time with flavours that are intense and plentiful. You can taste it in Two Oceans wines: fresh, delicious and full of life. All Two Oceans wines are made from IPW-accredited vines, farmed according to eco-sustainable principles. From the 2010 vintage, all Two Ocean wines carry the sustainability seal that guarantees production integrity every step of the way from the vineyards to the final pack, be it bottle or box.

The oceans aren’t just an important influence on Two Oceans wines. They also sustain life. That’s why Two Oceans supports the WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (WWF SASSI) that helps to improve the conservation status of overexploited seafood in our oceans. This wine is made entirely from Shiraz grapes.

The vineyards (viticulturist: Bennie Liebenberg) The grapes were sourced from premium vineyards in the Stellenbosch and mainly Malmesbury regions, situated at altitudes some 110 m to 160 m above sea level. The vines are grown in deep red decomposed granite as well as sandy and gravel soils, ideally suited to the cultivation of Shiraz grapes. The warm, dry condition resulted in a yield of 5 to 8 tons per hectare of healthy grapes with smaller berries and a favourable skin-tojuice ratio. Pest and disease control was implemented according to South African subjective IPW standards. The winemaking (winemaker: Justin Corrans) The grapes were harvested at 19º to 21º Balling during February. The grapes were crushed, and the juice and skins kept together for four hours to extract an optimum level of colour. The juice was separated from the skins in dejuicers by gravity. The juice was cold-clarified and the clean juice inoculated with a selected yeast culture. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks where the temperature was carefully controlled at 13º C. After fermentation the wine was racked from the lees, blended, cold-stabilised and filtered prior to bottling. Winemaker’s comments Colour: Bright pink. Bouquet: Intense floral aromas with hints of fresh strawberries and sour cherry notes. Taste: A fresh and fruity wine with strawberry and raspberry flavours, balanced by a fresh acidity, with a lingering finish. Food and wine pairing Excellent on its own or with picnic lunches, grilled seafood, chicken, pasta and sushi. www.twooceanswines.co.za

Higher Ground Rest aurant

JOZI’S INNER CITY EXPLORED some of the city’s most diverse restaurants, shops and galleries.

J

oburg’s lively ‘Braamies on the block’ is home of some of the city’s most diverse restaurants, shops and galleries.

Located on the beautiful grounds of St. Stithians College, the Higher Ground Restaurant has the best views in Jozi. We offer breakfast, lunch and dinner on either one of our beautiful decks, terrace area or inside the deli. Our food is all made with natural, fresh ingredients that we source locally. Let us know if you have dietary restrictions - our friendly staff wil help you find just the meal you want.

We also cater for conferences & special occasions @ The One and All club, St. Stithians College, Peter Place Tel: 011 024 3433 • 082 448 0285 • www.highergroundrestaurant.com

Situated on, in and around the block of Juta street and Melle street, ‘Braamies on the block’, taken from a popular pop song in the early 2000’s, is an apt description that draws people from wide spread suburbia to experience the creative vigor of the ‘block.’ One of the main attractions is “Neighbourgoods Market”, which features a food market every Saturday from 09:00am – 15:00pm. It’s a celebration of the stark city’s appeal and of its variety with a delicious assortment of different nations and their food. Different stalls offer distinct dishes from Spanish paella to Argentinian Asado. If you’re looking for food to take home there is an array of buyable products to choose from: Exotic cheeses, artisan breads, cakes, olives, pesto sauces, craft beer and various cordials. You could also enjoy sitting on the rooftop of the market, sipping home made cocktails and cordials at the bar while taking in the Joburg sky or squizzing at what the various clothing retailers have to offer. If the bustling market isn’t where you’d like to have a luncheon you could stroll the streets of the block and can visit the local clothing shops and galleries while deciding where to eat. One thing is you’ll definitely be spoiled for choice. (Dare I say my favourite restaurant) Vélo – an establishment credited for having the ‘best sarmies in Braamies’.

26

Hello Johannesburg November 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

Vélo exhibits the work of up-andcoming artists, while serving an array of breakfasts, sandwiches and salads (you can’t go wrong with the Snitch– chicken schnitzel and tomato relish), plus killer coffee and red Cappuccino’s to die for. Double Shot – Coffee shop and patisserie offering exotic teas and delicious coffee while snacking on delectable pastries. ‘86 Public – For those of you that would like to nibble on gourmet pizza’s while sipping on a late afternoon beverage. Post – delicious dishes for light luncheons. The Street – if you enjoy Neo-Hipster clothing and would like to peruse the latest fashions of the street. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from Braamies on the Block is Maboneng Precinct, which in Sotho means “Place of lights”, appropriate description that draws many to its verve and creative energy. One of the main attractions at Maboneng is “Arts on Main” which also features a Food Market on Sundays from 10:00am-15:00pm. This market also offers an array of decadent foods to either eat there or buy for home grazing. The precinct is also home to the Pop Art Theatre where many experimental and independent artists showcase their work and holds comedy every Sunday known as the ‘box comedy’. Pop Art also hosts many workshops that facilitate the honing of skills via experienced artist to novices. You can perambulate through the streets of Maboneng and peruse the boutique clothing stores and restaurants. Much like the “…Block” I can assure you that you would be spoiled for choice. Hello Johannesburg November 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

W

e chatted to the beautiful Claudia Goldberg about her amazing clothing store, claudia clothing situated in Blu Bird Shopping Centre.

Q: Please tell our readers a little something about who you are

A: I studied graphic design for

3 years but I got despondent after looking for a job, as I found the job agencies all wanted senior and experienced designers, so I decided to pack up and move to San Diego for a while. Fortunately, I have family there, and my uncle had 3 clothing stores at the time. I worked there for a year, and eventually became store manager and buyer. After several visa issues, I had to return to South Africa, which where I started managing another clothing store, who had similar brands I was used to working with in USA. After about 3-4 years, I decided I wanted to open my own clothing store, which I did, in Feb 2008

Q: Describe your personal style. A: I like pieces that don’t really

date, pieces with a more classic feel. I am not so much into ‘very fashion forward items’, that date quickly, so I usually wear a nice pair of skinny jeans, with a cute top. I like unique items, feminine items, something which is flowy and something a bit of a hippy vibe, items that are different and something that not everyone would be wearing the same of. One of my favourite brands is FREE PEOPLE, which we carry in the store. I also love layering my clothing, the more layers, the better!

Q: What would you say are the

summer trends for women this year?

A: Florals, pastels, the mixing

of eclectic patterns, shorts, skirts, Platform shoes and of course the 80’s are back!

Q: And for men?

A: Skinny jeans, Chinos, checkered shirts, Vans and the ever so cool All Stars

Q: Your fashion faux pas? A: I guess, I would have to say

Glitter! So glitter body lotions, glitter eye liners etc.

Q: What is/are the accessory/ac-

cessories you cannot do without for summer?

A: From our store, I would say our

Free People Lacey Bandeux bras, perfect for layering, which are great for big open under arm tops, also our lacey halter bras look amazing under tank tops and tees.

Q:

Who is you favourite South African Designer and why?

A: Vesselina Pentcheva- She uses the most delicate fabrics, and also loves to layer, her label is soft and flowy and feminine! Shop 4 Blubird, Cnr Athol Oaklands & Fort St. Birnam, 011 885 3767 www.claudiaclothing.co.za claudia@claudiaclothing.co.za

IBERBLAST C is a highly powerful anti-aging formula that contains a high concentration of pure Vitamin C, which is vital in stimulating the Fibroblast Cells of your skin to cause them to manufacture collagen. Healthy collagen fibres in the skin keep your skin firm, tight and looking young. As we get older, the body slows down the manufacture of collagen. The collagen fibres collapse and this is what causes sagging and wrinkles. FIBERBLAST C has the unique ability to stimulate your Fibroblast Cells to manufacture collagen and restore your skin’s youthfulness, fullness and reduce wrinkles. FIBERBLAST C is an amazing product produced in a liquid powder form and designed to be used topically on fine lines, pigmentation or wherever firming or lifting is needed in a particular area. Its incredible ability to reduce the effects of ageing is unsurpassed by anything else available Liquid Powder is neither liquid, nor powder. It is a very fine, dry, freeflowing powder that is predominantly liquid. It is one of the latest advances in skincare technology developed by Dr. Danné MontagueKing. The powerful liquid powder formula ensures that Vitamin C in its purest form penetrates the skin and

Fiberblast C is different from any other product in the market because of its purest liquid form as Ascorbic Acid. Vitamin C is most potent and effective, but it’s also unstable. It denatures very quickly and loses its potency and effectiveness. The only way to stabilize Vitamin C is to molecularly alter it by adding other chemicals. The problem with this is that the Vitamin C loses most of its potency. The body also has the job of breaking down the other chemicals that are used as preservatives. Topical Vitamin C skincare products produced by other manufacturers have to rely on these stabilized forms of Vitamin C which are not as effective or as potent. While stabilized Vitamin C is good for shelf life, there’s simply not enough concentration to see any radical results. DMK has solved the problem of stabilizing Vitamin C in its pure, liquid form while preserving its full potency and effectiveness. Using a highly technical process, we encapsulated pure liquid Ascorbic Acid droplets in a thin wall of Silica particles to preserve it. This is what creates the liquid powder form. Silica is a natural substance that is found in the body which means that the skin readily accepts its chemistry. Fiberblast produces collagen to keep skin looking young. It contains antioxidants and free radical scavengers that protect the skin. It improves skin texture, lightens and protects the skin against UVB damage. It improves skin texture and firmness and it is suitable for all skin types. For your nearest stockist contact DMK SA 011 262-6120 For further information go to www.dannemking.com

M

ount Grace Spa announces its collaboration with the renowned Africology brand with a menu of cutting edge, specifically developed beauty and body treatments. A new series of half-day spa spoils is also on the menu. Gauteng’s most well-loved and regarded country Spa is situated at the award-winning Mount Grace Country House & Spa in the Magaliesburg. The state-of-the-art facility prides itself on keeping up with cuttingedge treatments and spa trends. Their latest collaboration with the exclusive Africology brand enforces their belief in local ingredients and methodologies and is certainly befitting of its extraordinary Magaliesburg surrounds. Since it was founded in 2000, Africology has become one of the most respected home-grown beauty brands in South Africa and is now exported all over the world. Africology harnesses the abundance of plants and herbs available in South Africa to create their unique range of skincare and body products and a menu of treatments for face and body that have proven, long lasting effects. A large focus of Africology products is their ability to specifically counteract the harsh effects of the South African climate. This and the pedigree which is associated with the brand has led to Mount Grace Spa introducing an extensive range of top-to-toe rejuvenating and revitalising treatments using Africology products and methods. Says Africology South Africa Marketing Manager Vassilli Droganis “I believe the authentic nature of our

product is perfectly partnered with the breathtaking landscape of Mount Grace; all Mount Grace therapists have been given intense training into the natural healing properties of Africology products and this is certain to offer guests at the spa a truly unique experience”. To celebrate this partnership, Mount Grace Spa has introduced the Africology Triphase Massage to complement the menu of facials and body treatments using the brand’s products. This intense massage involves essential African oil infused, compressed and incorporated into an all-over body treatment which includes hot-stone work, stretches, full body work and a scalp treatment. The intense aromatic qualities of the products used have healing and relaxing effects, which last long after the massage is completed. ocated in the heart of Kliptown, The Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre is a unique, four-star property with unrivaled African style. Decorated by the late Alf Khumalo’s eclectic photography and boasting 48 accommodation rooms (including 2 presidential suites); this is a venue which should be on every person’s radar. The addition of 3 conference venues (a 50 seater and 2 boardrooms) as well as newly inspired tours and packages truly makes this the ideal place for a conference with a difference. Celebrating over 6 years in hospitality, The Soweto Hotel and Conference Centre has grown from strength to strength. From humble beginnings, the development of this amazing property has been largely due to the efforts of the founder, Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo. Offering guests true luxury, the hotel’s theme has managed to stay very true to its roots and remains what it was intended to be – a walk back in history where we can feel a part of the Freedom Charter’s

adoption. Through partnering with local suppliers, the hotel is able to offer packages and tours which give guests nothing short of an authentic and moving view of Kliptown life whether you see it on foot, bicycle or quad bike. You will be welcomed by a community thankful for your visit and no trip to Soweto would be complete without a drink in the local shebeen. The hotel offers great local cuisine in their restaurant, The Jazz Maniacs, remembering a famous jazz group that was well-known in the illegal shebeens of the townships and provides a small stage in the front for soothing jazz sessions. Curtain rises on Market Theatre revamp

O

ne hundred years after the iconic Market Theatre was first built in Johannesburg, the curtains are about to rise on its multi-million rand overhaul. The reopening of the Main Theatre is an important milestone of renovations that have been under way since February. The Market Theatre is world famous for staging struggle theatre during the dark days of Apartheid, and continues its legacy by giving fresh young talent a place to be heard. But for all its history, it’s been a little on the cramped side for the artists, staff and even the audiences, as it was initially designed as a fruit market full of pineapples and papaya, not plays. The building is a protected Heritage Site within Joburg’s culturally important Newtown Precinct, so the overhaul could not change any structural features. To protect its unique heritage and architectural importance, several different designs were assessed. The end result had to honour its legacy but also provide more facilities and more comfort for patrons and performers. Audiences will immediately notice plush new seats and enjoy increased legroom in the Main Theatre. The theatre has been extended to increase the seating capacity from 380 to 450. Toilet facilities have been upgraded and the box office – a cramped affair where the queues often blocked the main entrance – has been repositioned and enlarged. The renovation was made possible by capital funding from the Department of Arts and Culture, and the leading architect is Nicholas Sack of Albonico Sack Metacity. The overhaul was sparked by renewal projects in Newtown and in particular the Newtown Junction, currently a massive construction site on the doorstep of the Market Theatre complex. Other exciting plans will see the area

previously occupied by the famous Gramadoelas Restaurant reused as a jazz venue. Gramadoelas closed in July after two decades in Newtown. Like any good theatre, work is continuing behind the scenes with the overhaul only due for completion by the end of 2014. The smaller Laager Theatre will transfer to a new building being built behind the current theatre, with more space and better facilities. Rooms currently occupied by the Laager will be used to extend the foyer and create a new dressing room and offices. The grant also made it possible to buy the COSAC building across the road in Bree Street, once used by the Children of Soweto Action Centre. The theatre will relocate its Laboratory drama school, the Market Photo Workshop School and Gallery into the building from their current home in President Street, to centralise all its diverse and culturally crucial activities. The theatre was founded in 1976 by Mannie Manim and Barney Simon in the shell of the Indian Fruit Market, and challenged apartheid from the conviction that culture can change society. Now the much-needed overhaul will ensure it remains a leading light in South Africa’s cultural scene. Volvo S60 and XC60 get Superior rating in new collision prevention test

V

olvo Car Group’s leadership in safety technology has been highlighted by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS recently introduced a new test programme that rates the performance of front crash prevention systems. This is a major development for crash tests in general, as prevention systems are playing an ever-increasing role in vehicle safety. And Volvo is ahead of the game. Both the Volvo S60 and XC60 received the highest possible rating

of ‘Superior’ – and Volvo Cars’ City Safety system is the only standardspecification low-speed crash prevention system in the test, which included 74 vehicles. “We welcome the fact that the major rating institutes are starting to integrate collision avoidance technologies in their test programmes. This gives consumers a better insight into the advantages of auto brake systems. It will also drive implementation of these technologies through the vehicle fleet,” says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group.

City Safety standard in all Volvo models

V

olvo’s low-speed City Safety system is standard in all new Volvo models around the world. Most new Volvos are also available with stateof-the-art technologies that detect, warn and brake automatically for rear other vehicles as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

So far, Volvo Cars has sold more than one million cars equipped with systems for automatic braking – and the company will continue this pioneering work in the near future by making detection systems work also in darkness for pedestrians and by introducing collision mitigation for animals. Auto brake results in fewer accidents

“The IIHS test focuses on two situations - both with the car approaching a stationary vehicle mock-up. However, it should be emphasised that Volvo Cars’ systems cover a much broader scope of real-life scenarios, including vehicles moving in the same direction, pedestrians and cyclists,” says Thomas Broberg.

46

The benefits of Volvo’s ground-breaking City Safety technology has been documented in an earlier IIHS/HLDI (Highway Loss Data Institute) report stating a reduction of the collision claim frequency with up to 20 per cent. Data from Swedish insurer If show similar figures with frontal colli-

The IIHS’ new crash prevention evaluation will be incorporated into the institute’s 2014 Top Safety Pick+ rating. It includes two tests addressing front-to-rear crashes, one at 20 km/h (12 mph) and the other at 40 km/h (25 mph). An additional point is given to vehicles with Forward Colsions in car following situations being reduced with 23 per cent. The IIHS study of insurance claims involving a Volvo XC60 shows that City Safety reduces the costs for bodily injury liability with 33 per cent – while property damage liability was lowered by 15 per cent. “Over the years, the risk of being injured in a Volvo has been reduced continuously and substantially. By introducing new preventive and protective systems, we keep moving towards our aim that by 2020 no one should be injured or killed in a new Volvo. Our long-term vision is that cars should not crash,” says Thomas Broberg. Previous IIHS Awards In 2012 the Volvo S60 one of only three vehicles to pass IIHS crash test Eight out of 11 premium sedans failed an alarming new IIHS (United States’ Insurance Institute) crash test. The Volvo S60 was one of only three that passed. Only three of the 11 midsize luxury and near-luxury cars evaluated earned good or acceptable ratings in an alarming new crash test conducted by the United States’ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

lision Warning. The Volvo S60 and XC60 equipped with City Safety and Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection are among seven models that have received a Superior rating in the new test. The new test - a small overlap frontal crash test - is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a car collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole at 64km/h. Rather than striking the object deadon as in most crash tests, the IIHS delivers a more glancing blow that only impacts a quarter of the car’s front end. These types of collisions are particularly dangerous, as the impact will often miss the energy-absorbing structures built into the car’s frame. “Small overlap crashes are a major source of fatalities,” says IIHS President Adrian Lund. “Nearly every new car performs well in other frontal crash tests conducted by the Institute and the federal government, but we still see more than 10 000 deaths in frontal crashes each year. This new test programme is based on years of analysing real-world frontal crashes and then replicating them in our crash test facility to determine how people are being seriously injured and how cars can be designed to protect them better. We think this is the next step in improving frontal crash protection.” The Volvo S60 was one of only three vehicles pass this crash test – testament that Volvo always has, and will continue, to excel in the development of safety technology.
