O

October is the unofficial start to the festive season and even though they do it every year, you’ll probably still be shocked when the malls around Joburg start setting up their festive displays and promotions. I can hear you now… “Can you believe it’s October already? Where did the year go?” Well if you’re like me and you just can’t get enough of this vibrant and diverse city, especially in the warm summer months, then don’t you worry, as we have all the fun, exciting and interesting activities to help you take advantage of the final three months of 2018. On our front cover this month we celebrate with a true Joburg landmark as they turn 20, and let me tell you that Emperors Palace has pulled out all the stops to ensure that every visitor to The Palace of Dreams will party like the Emperor. From the World Poker Tour to Gin Pairing evenings at Aurelia’s to my personal favourite, a Monsoon Lagoon reunion party, trust me when I say that you won’t be left wanting!

Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Seeing as October 1st is World Vegetarian Day and the fact that two of our food writers are vegetarian, we thought it appropriate to highlight some of Joburg’s newest and best vegetarian dining destinations. Head on over to pages 24 and 25 to find out which three restaurants made the cut. For those of us raised on author Roald Dahl’s wild world of wonder and possibility, the multiaward-winning musical, Matilda comes as a real treat this October to the Teatro stage at Montecasino. Check out our Arts & Culture section for a sneak peek into this delightful and highly entertaining musical of the decade. If you’re one of the lucky ones and you still have a couple Shekels left by this time in the year then we highly recommend you check out pages 51 through 54 for our international travel review on Zambia and Botswana. Just a short one-and-a-half-hour flight from OR Tambo, this unique African destination is a must for the avid adventurer and game lover. I hope that you enjoy reading this month’s edition and please don’t forget to visit us online at www. hellojoburg.co.za for more exciting things to do in The City of Gold and beyond. Best,

Stand-up comic Nik Rabinowitz grew up on a farm in Africa, climbing trees and commentating on his own rugby games in three of South Africa’s eleven official languages.Today, he graces his fans on stages across the country and internationally. After the successful recent run of his one-man show in Cape Town, and turning 40, comedian Nik Rabinowitz decided that the best location for his midlife crisis would be Fourways. His most recent show Fortified explored a variety of subjects, some related to his bout with middle age, some not. Some related to his many (three) children, some not, either way, if you were lucky enough to catch the show last month, it was treat. We caught up with Nik for a peek into a day in his life. The art

OF THE AFFAIR …in Jozi (or anywhere)! So, disclaimer! We’re totally not advocating you stray beyond the confines of your marriage. All we are saying is that should you find yourself in such a position (no judgement here) for whatever reason, here are some of Jozi’s best spots to lurk according to some of our helpful readers. Literally, a hole in the wall, if you don’t know this bar come restaurant is there, you will certainly miss it. Sin+Tax in Rosebank is dark and cosy with just enough mood lighting to read the drinks menu but dark enough to allow you to dissolve into your surroundings. Why: Most of the people here are trying to disappear from something anyway, so chances are that spotting you with your not partner is the last thing on their mind. There’s safety in their indifference Suggested intimacy level: This one’s generally safe for smooching and light body groping when it’s quiet or you don’t know anyone. If you’re feeling a little nervous then move to a cocktail table to create some distance between you. After midnight on the weekend, you can let loose a little more. 4 Bolton Rd, Parkwood, Randburg m 010 9002559 K www.sintaxbar.com

Back of the Melrose Arch Pride Hotel bar

Sort of like a library or billiard room, the bar at the Melrose Arch Pride Hotel is kind of dark and a little bit seedy. Why: Like Sin+Tax, no one here is really looking to meet anyone else, so you’re pretty much guaranteed your privacy. There are also lots of people seemingly having “business meetings” so you could easily blend in. For

6

Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

extra safety go for one of the booths in the back corner or get a room. It is a hotel after all. Suggested intimacy level: Given the business clientele, we’d caution against too much of a public display although a leg rub is pretty safe. If you do need to get a bit more physical, then book a room – that’s the advantage of this being a hotel. 1 Melrose Square, Melrose m 011 214 6666 K www.marriott.com

Most Tashas

When pursuing some type of extra marital activity, time is not on your side. If you are looking to touch base with someone over a quick meal, then a place with quick service is essential. Lingering is risky. Why: We are yet to wait longer than 20 minutes at any Tashas. Also, should you pay for the meal by card (which we don’t suggest), it’s much easier to explain a meal at Tashas with a friend or colleague than something like Marble or DW Eleven-13. As extra precaution perhaps try a Tashas a little way off from home or the office. Suggested intimacy level: This option is more if you need to catch up and talk. We would caution against physical shenanigans. There are branches nationwide so check out their website to find one near you. K www.tashascafe.com

The Park Ploy

This one requires both parties having pets and walking them. Going out to suddenly buy a dog that hasn’t been discussed or agreed on could look suspicious. So, this one is really for those with the existing dog-structure. Why: If walking your dog is part of both your routines already, then this won’t seem out of the ordinary. Suggested intimacy level: You can steal a kiss behind a tree or a bush, but chances are you’re also less likely to engage in public displays in front of your pooches – that’s just weird in any relationship, right?

Hotel hopping

Of course, there will be those occasions when you may need to just let go and not care who sees you. For these occasions we would suggest the old school hotel route – straight up. Do not collect R200, do not start in the bar or have lunch in the restaurant. Book a room and use it.

Hotel tips 

 

on’t go to the same hotel every time D as this increases the chance of the hotel staff catching on and possibly being called as a witness in court. Yes, we have watched all 6 seasons of Masters of Sex. Try avoid paying for the room by card – that could raise questions later on. Arrive and leave separately.

he Bull Run Restaurant in the heart of Sandton CBD recently reopened following renovations. To celebrate the reopening of the iconic restaurant, Hello Joburg Magazine hosted 25 of Jozi’s top foodies and lifestyle influencers at an exclusive launch event, #HelloRecommends The Bull Run. The event kicked off with the unveiling of the brand-new bronze bull. The 1.2-tonne bull, situated in front of the restaurant opposite the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, gives The Bull Run a unique ‘New York in Joburg’ feel. The guests then enjoyed welcome drinks – including French champagne and signature cocktails like the Side Walk (The Bull Run’s take on a mint julep) and the Candyfloss Margarita (a strong but sweet indulgence that you absolutely have to try) – and finally a three-course dinner that showcased some

Luyanda Madonia  and Tshepi Vundla. of the new menu items on offer. Apart from the best steaks in town, guests indulged in other dishes too including the prawn ritz, salmon timbale, beef carpaccio and dill cream mussels to start, and the jalapeño and feta fillet, chicken cordon bleu, kingklip and wild mushroom gnocchi for mains. Not forgetting dessert, the evening ended on a sweet note with the number-one sweet treat on the menu – the berry brûlée. Hmm, hmm! Needless to say, it was an evening to remember. If you haven’t visited the ‘new’ Bull Run yet, be sure to add it to your foodie bucket list, whether it be for a business lunch, a romantic date night or a classy dinner with friends. LG to usher in new era of AI robotics with wearable robot Focused on becoming a leading developer of service robots in the next decade, LG Electronics (LG) will unveil to the public at IFA 2018 its first “human-centric” wearable robot. Unlike previously announced robots, such as Guide Robot, Cleaning Robot and Serving Robot, LG CLOi SuitBot doesn’t navigate airport lounges and hotel hallways by itself. What it does, is support and enhance a user’s legs to allow for more mobility and lower limb strength. A comfortable fit and naturally rotating joints allow the CLOi SuitBot to move in a more relaxed and natural way to enhance the lower body while walking, standing or working. Its sandal-type shoes and automatic adjustment feature allow the wearer to get in and out of the suit more easily, differentiating LG CLOi SuitBot from many other exoskeletons. 1 www.lg.com/za

FlySafair speeds up check-in using new technology FlySafair has launched Express Check-In, a new technology that allows the airline to service passengers more quickly than ever before.  Express Check-In, which has already been rolled out at all the airports from which FlySafair operates, enables the airline’s queue combers to check-in those passengers without checked-in luggage before they even reach the check-in counter. The innovative new check-in technology was developed in conjunction with Blue Market Retail Solutions, the same company that partnered FlySafair in becoming the first airline to offer card transactions on all its flights using ground-breaking POS technology. Using this same technology, FlySafair attendants can search for the passenger’s flight ticket using their reference number, surname or date of birth, and then produce their boarding pass directly from the device. Designated queue combers will be easy for passengers to spot as they will be wearing pink sashes to identify them. 1 www.flysafair.co.za

Jaguar Land Rover’s virtual eyes look at trust in self-driving cars

Sherry – Ann James

Sherry - Ann is a mom of two from Fourways Johannesburg. She and her husband Leon are the founding pastors of Royal Kingdom Ministries in Robertsham where she runs a young girl empowerment programme called Girl Talk. She is also a Doula and wealth administrator at Investec Bank. And, as if all that wasn’t enough, Sherry – Ann is also a top 25 finalist for Tammy Taylor Mrs. South Africa. Q @_SherryJames D @SherryJames_ E @sherryjamesttmrssa18 Tell us a little bit more about the Girl Talk programme? Girl Talk is a programme for girls between the ages of 12 and 25. We have conversations about topics relevant to them. We love, encourage, uplift and empower girls to become the best versions of themselves. We also offer one-on-one mentorship. D @GirlTalkZA What colour would you be and why? Definitely red. Firstly, it’s my favourite colour. Secondly, it represents boldness, confidence and tenacity and I think that I possess all those characteristics. When worn, the colour brings out a beautiful radiance in the person wearing it. I’d like to believe that I bring out the best in people too. What’s the first thing you do in the morning? I thank God for waking me up and I declare that it’s going to be a good day.

The South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, has unveiled a stunning five-coin Palaeontology Collection in 24-carat gold. The collection brings to life the ‘Archosauria’ - crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds or the “ruling reptilesˮ that roamed and soared freely in Southern Africa some 200 million years ago. The five coins in the 2018 Natura series, aptly named “Rise of the Dinosaurs” will be available in 1oz with a face value of R100 as well as in fractionals – ½oz with a face value of R50, ¼oz with a face value of R20, 1/10oz with a face value of R10 and 1/20oz with a face value of R5, with each depicting a different archosaur, all in limited mintages. Coins can be purchased from the Mint’s retail store in Centurion or at the Elegance Jewellers in Melrose Arch. 1 www.samint.co.za

Jaguar Land Rover has fitted ‘virtual eyes’ to intelligent pods to understand how humans will trust self-driving vehicles, as research studies suggest that as many as 63% of pedestrians worry about how safe it will be to cross the road in the future. The friendly-faced ‘eye pods’ have a vital job: helping work out how much information future self-driving cars should share with users or pedestrians to ensure that people trust the technology. The trials are part of a wider study exploring how future connected and autonomous vehicles can replicate human behaviour and reactions when driving. One piece of advice you would give to young girls? Be yourself, always. Don’t allow anyone to put you into a box in order to fit in.You were born to stand out. It’s easier to fulfil your purpose that way. Your favourite restaurant in Jozi? Right now I’m absolutely loving Riboville Boutique Hotel’s restaurant. The food, prepared by Chef Guy, is truly amazing. Sexy, sophisticated, with a little bit of home. K www.riboville.com What inspired you to become a Doula? I had a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean) with my second baby in 2016 and I had a Doula present. She was such a beautiful support to both my husband and I and it made the experience so much more wonderful. I knew that day that I want to be that for other women. We all deserve to be treated like queens. Favourite song and why? Rise by Katy Perry. Every word in this song is powerful. It speaks of transforming and rising up in spite of what others may say to bring you down. Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Neighbourhoods

A bit of Bryanston Where we think everyone should know their neighbours WOMBLES STEAKHOUSE

What was once a whole lot of over-sized plots with big homes and rolling lawns, the suburb of Bryanston today sports sectional title properties making life a whole lot more affordable for first-time buyers and those looking for more of a lock-up & go structure.

N

ow the stage for various upmarket shopping centres, trendy restaurants and corporate blocks, you’ll also find the suburb sprawling with millennials playing and working close to where they live because that’s living your best life right? Ainʼt nobody got time for long commutes anymore. But Bryanston is not all 30-somethings in activewear buying carb clever meals at Woolies. With various schools, hospitals and the iconic Bryanston Country Club (circa 1948 after all) in the vicinity, Bryanston is a popular spot for couples and families too. It’s a mixed people kind of burb and we think that makes it a super cool place to live. So now that you know who the neighbours are, can we interest you in something delicious? When in Bryanston, do pop into one of these spots. We added the gym as well, so you don’t feel so guilty eating out all the time.

Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Once of Parktown North fame, Duncan and Yvette Barker moved their famous meat eatery to The Hobart Grove Centre in Bryanston, threw in a cocktail lounge and added lighter meals to the a la carte menu. But the steaks haven’t gone anywhere – from the fillet, rump and prime rib to the T-bone, Wombles has stayed true to its original menu. Of course, fish and poultry are also available for those with less of a penchant for a juicy steak. We would also like to draw your attention to the dessert menu; Crêpe Suzettes…. #justsaying Hobart Grove Shopping Centre, 88 Hobart Road, Bryanston m 011 463 8558 1 www.wombles.co.za

TURN 'N TENDER

While we are on the topic of meat, if you’re looking for the juiciest and most tender steaks in town we suggest you book your table at Turn ‘n Tender today. The story of the four Aaron brothers who started Turn ‘n Tender Steakhouse in 1977 has become a famous story in the industry today. Besides the amazing menu, this is also a great spot to enjoy excellent award winning wines, a meeting place to catch up with friends or treat your partner to a romantic night out. No matter the occasion Turn ‘n Tender never disappoints! Nicolway Shopping Mall, 2194 William Nicol Dr, Bryanston m 011 706 9470 1 www.turnntender.co.za

LITTLE TUSCANY

A gorgeous boutique hotel that serves as a stunning venue for a corporate event or place to put all those out of town friends and family over the festive season. This place is a little bit of Tuscany in Bryanston. Add the free WIFI, minibars in all the rooms and en-suite bathrooms and you don’t really need to leave the premises. The restaurant, which is open to the public, serves food the way your mama used to, comforting and yum! Everyone needs a little home away from home in their local burb. 48 Queens Rd, Bryanston m 011 706 8206 1 www.littletuscany.co.za

VIRGIN ACTIVE BRYANSTON

So, if you do bump into one of those active wear clad neighbours we keep mentioning, it’s likely they’re en route to or coming back from the gym. And seeing as though the gym bunnies are looking so happy go lucky, they must be onto something. So, whether you want to kick, step, bounce or just breathe with other people breathing loudly (in a yoga class duh) then look no further than the VA class schedule. There’s something for everyone. 3 Cross Rd, Bryanston m 011 463 6556 1 www.virginactive.co.za

SOCIAL ON MAIN

This bar and restaurant was serving gin and tonics in fish bowls and craft beer before it was even a thing. The food is gourmet street style with a lot of the meal sauces and cocktail syrups made from scratch on the premises. A great spot for a Friday lunch with colleagues or a Saturday night jol with the mates, Social on Main is always a vibe. BY NAVI Beauty with a beautiful story.

Whilst being pampered at this brand-new salon, we sat down with 28-year-old owner Nerina Gurie who was born in the small town of Umkomaas on the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Nerina moved to Johannesburg six years ago upon the completion of her Bachelor of Commerce degree to be closer to her sister Navina - they were inseparable. However, devastatingly their world transformed in November 2014 as Navina was diagnosed with stage-four cancer. Medical doctors gave Navina three months to live after her diagnosis; Nerina says “After getting other opinions we decided to give other oncologists a try to assess her and we were given hope from Dr.

18

Owen Norsworthy from the Donald Gordon Medical Centre. My sister became the living miracle in every aspect. She fell pregnant and despite being cautioned against having the baby she soldiered on and gave birth to her miracle son Veer Ajay in July 2015 whilst undergoing treatment. She turned her three months into more than three years.” Sadly, she passed on in December 2017 at the tender age of 30 but through the tears, darkness and heartache, Nerina says she always kept in mind the dream that she and her sister had, which was to open up a nail bar of their own one-day. So bravely Nerina left the corporate world to fulfil their dream: “I have named the nail bar after her, it’s called Polished by Navi and when I walked into this space I knew that it was perfect. The ambience, the look and feel... vintage with a modern touch...it’s everything my sister was. She was an old wise soul in a young, vibrant body.” 51 Corlett Dr, Illovo, Sandton m 08307 713 067 Q @polishedbynavi E @polishedbynavi

TURN Ń TENDER Parktown North

Guy Donald

A quintessential classic steakhouse bent on quality in one of Joburg’s trendiest neighbourhoods, Turn ń Tender Parktown North is subtly redefying the experience of a great steak one bite at a time.

W

hat started out as a story of four brothers in 1977 with a love for great steak, an excellent taste in wine and a passion for creating a warm welcoming atmosphere has since turned into a firm South African favourite, a legend franchise among all generations. Turn 'n Tender Parktown North opened in 2007 by franchise owner Brian Aaron. Since then Guy Donald, who was originally hired to run the Illovo branch eight years ago, fell in love with the space and is now the owner. “The wholesome family-run style of the group was what attracted me. We are in the people business, with food being the by-product and not the other way around” says Guy who runs his restaurant with that motto in mind. From the minute you set foot through the door you instantly feel welcomed and appreciated as every member of the staff greets you with an inviting smile. The restaurant offers a unique experience

with an intimate and personal space and a feel that’s centred around pavement style dining as the restaurant is located on one of Joburg’s trendiest street corners. This meat lovers delight prides itself in being a premium steakhouse that caters to businesses and families alike; everyone is welcome! The focus here is on the food, exceptional ingredients and an atmosphere that will have you coming back for more. The menu offers something for everyone with a variety of superior quality cuts of meat from fillet, sirloin and T-bone to rib-eye on the bone and prime rib along with signature cuts like rump with no fat, rump with fat, point rump and the Entrecote which is a premium cut from the loin with an extra trail of fat that adds a rich flavour. Choose from the original Turn 'n Tender basting, plain grilled, chilli basting, fresh herbs and spices or our personal favourite, the dry

pepper coating. There is also a wide variety of seafood, and vegetarian dishes featured for those who don’t eat meat and we highly recommend the veg burger made with two deep-fried Grana Padano-crumbed aubergine slices layered with goat's cheese, topped with grilled onions and served on a toasted brioche bun, its truly delicious trust us! Turn 'n Tender Parktown North also has a signature menu that’s unique to this restaurant and on it, you will find a variety of experimental dishes and some that have been developed by Guy himself. The restaurant also offers a wine pairing menu with recommendations to accompany all your Turn 'n Tender favourites. No matter what the occasion this is where stories begin. So embark on a celebration of food with Guy Donald and Turn 'n Tender Parktown North as your guide. RESTAURANT HOTSPOTS Peace, love and veganism

Did you know that on October first we celebrate World Vegetarian Day? So, if you’re a carnivorous creature, prepare to be converted, because we spent a few days trying out our favorite vegan/vegetarian eateries and we secured it down to these top three. Trust us, try 'em!

Lexi’s Healthy Eatery Eat More Plants

T

his brand-spanking-new eatery is a ray of sunshine and it is the newest addition to the 24-central hub. It is known as a healthy eatery and also offers a vast variety of vegan, vegetarian and flexitarian options. So, the good news is if you’re dying to go for date night, but your better half doesn't do plant-based, no problem. There is a beautifully prepared baked salmon dish with quinoa and a beef burger smothered in smoky mayo, free range of course. But, enough about the boring basics let’s get down to the herbivorous delights. A must-try ground-breaking dish is the Glow Bowl. Picture the plumpest

sweet potato with crisp fresh baby spinach, supple roasted cauliflower, chickpeas and avo all cloaked in a tahini dressing, which they make themselves obvs. Or try their new Black Bowl stuffed with black rice (full of antioxidants, gluten-free and high in fibre) moreish mushrooms, pickled ginger and a tamari cream dressing. Yip, you guessed it, earthshattering stuff. P.S. Don’t leave without trying their vegan superfood Horlicks and a slice of blueberry vegan cheesecake. 6 Gwen Lane, Sandton m 083 300 1210 1 www.lexiseatery.com Q @lexiseatery

oxanneʼs in Fourways is literally what makes the world go around. Especially lately, because they have just introduced their brand-new vegan/vegetarian style menu. We’re talking an abundance of superfoods, veggies and a whole lotta lipsmacking soul food. No need to supersize that steak because there is no excuse not to order off their meat-free Monday menu. There is a choice between gourmet sarmies, Buddha bowls, glam burgers, cottage pies, meatballs and mash, tacos and wood-fired hand stretched pizza. The meatballs are meaty, but vegan style made with chickpeas and armed with goodness. Also try the tasty and tantalising vegan style tacos served with crumbed cannellini beans and lentil balls, pink slaw, smashed black beans, guac and spicy tomatillo sauce dolloped onto a hand pressed soft-shell gluten-free taco. P.S. Skip starters and rather order their guilt-free vegan cheesecake. Pineslopes Boulevard, Fourways m 011 465 9917 1 www.roxannes.me Q @roxannesrumeatery

here isn’t one reason why we don’t love this little organic café. Firstly, it is nestled in one of the most picturesque parts outside the city. Secondly, they have the most beautiful vegetable gardens and fruit trees in the city and thirdly they serve spectacular vegan food, buffet style with over 35 plant-based dishes and you can take a slice home with you from their deli. Go for the avo toast on freshly baked charcoal sourdough, one of their delicious gluten-free vegan wraps or their spinach croquettes. It’s the easiest way to get your greens in for the day. Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… ROCKETS BRYANSTON

I

’ve long been in love with Rockets in Parkhurst (it’s an oldie but goodie, okay!), so when the brand decided to add a mega eatery to its Jozi restaurant empire, I was nothing short of thrilled. Since the four-floor restaurant opened its doors in mid2017, I’ve visited on many occasions for drinks – after-work wine, weekend cocktails and even a #sundayfunday vibe – but only recently did I pop in for a full wine and dine experience. Here’s what I thought. The first thing you’ll notice (and fall in love with) upon stepping into the restaurant is the chic décor that’s a true reflection of the Rockets lifestyle. (Actually, I lie – it’s the fussfree parking at Hobart Grove Centre – one thing I detest about the Parkhurst spot that forces you to park up a side street, often miles away from the restaurant! Anyway, back to the décor...) The restaurant is dotted with interesting pieces that have been specially selected to create a unique atmosphere. There are two dining rooms at Rockets Bryanston – the upstairs one serves tapas and the downstairs one offers a fine-dining experience alongside some Rockets favourites (like their burgers and pizzas). My friend and I visited on a balmy spring evening, so we opted to try the tapas bar out for an early dinner. We grabbed a table out on the deck where there’s a jovial yet sophisticated vibe (albeit overlooking a parking lot). To start, we ordered two of our fave Rockets cocktails – the long island iced tea and the elderflower & apple mojito. Tried and tested, they were as good as ever – and I loved how the mojito was served in a silver cup that kinda looks like a mini ice bucket. We then decided to order a lusty spread of vegetarian as well as meat and fish tapas (the menu divides the non-meat from the meat options for easy perusing) – the jalapeño poppers, vegetarian spring rolls, prawn tempura and salt & pepper calamari –all arrived promptly. I’d like to think I’ve tried the best jalapeño poppers in Jozi and to be honest, these didn’t compare at all. The batter was light and crispy, but the cheese filling was so minimal that the poppers were almost too spicy to eat! The spring rolls, however, were perfect – fried to perfection and surprisingly very tasty, which, let’s be honest, veg spring rolls usually aren’t. Moving onto the seafood tapas, the prawn tempura was the biggest disappointment of the lot. Seven tiny pieces of what looked and tasted like prawn popcorn rather than tempura-battered prawns came served with a generous helping of salad, perhaps to trick you into thinking that R92 is a fair price for this dish (it’s not). The calamari, on the other hand, was the star of the show – served with a garlic aioli sauce and topped with sliced baby jalapeños, the portion was generous and the flavours were simple but ever so satisfying. Overall, I think Rockets is still a fab watering hole, but the dining experience leaves something to be desired. The tapas are great for nibbling on before a night of drinking – just don’t expect anything inventive or out-of-this-world. Though, if you have the cash to splash, I’d say why not – at Rockets, it’s more about socialising than gastronomy anyway (in my opinion, at least).

chef OF THE MONTH

Grant

Chef van der Riet

We like it when interesting people make our food and Chef Grant van der Riet fits the bill.

I

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied

f Chef Grant van der Riet could cook for anyone (those who have passed through the pearly gates or those still very much earthbound), it would be Jim Carrey, Jack Nicholson and Freddie Mercury. His guilty pleasures include rock and metal music, spaghetti and craft beer and he’s cooked for former president Thabo Mbeki. The longest shift he ever worked was 36 hours while in Nigeria and he has an array of scars to account for knife and oven wounds. One of the weirdest/coolest things he’s played with was carbonated reverse spherification (yes the word appears in Wikipedia) on alcohols used on desserts. Needless to say, he has all the right creds for us. Now for the reason we caught up with him – his new menu at fine-dining eatery Luce restaurant at the Southern Sun Hyde Park hotel. With a love for playing with different flavours, it’s no surprise that his new menu takes Italian cuisine back to basics with uncomplicated but delicious flavour allowing the different ingredients to come alive. In January 2018, Chef Grant moved to Southern Sun Hyde Park where he took over the helm of Luce’s restaurant, the Island Bar, room service, breakfast buffet, à la carte, and banqueting. The chef, who stepped into the kitchen for the

first time at the age of 14, knew instantly that he had found his place in the world. He studied at Prue Leith after school where he achieved a Diploma in Professional Cookery. It was during this time, under an Italian chef that the fire was lit for his love affair with Italian cuisine. It’s the originality of Italian cuisine that appeals to a chef, the country-style cooking and more specifically the bread and you’ll see that reflected in the selection at Luce which includes everything from focaccias to knotted basil pesto bread.

The new starters on the Luce menu include a variety of options from a caprese salad consisting of baked bocconcini, cocktail heirloom tomatoes, basil snow and balsamic pearls to Gamberi alla Busara which is grilled garlic butter prawns with a hint of chilli, basil labne, paw-paw and avocado and venison carpaccio with shaved pecorino, aioli, pickled quail egg and truffle snow. As for his signature dishes visitors can look forward to lobster tortellini with portobello mushroom and Prosecco cream sauce, which

Chef Grant describes as “absolutely fantastic”. It’s the skill in ensuring that the tortellini is perfectly created, with the right-sized hole and the right folds that make a real difference to the dish. Another favourite is Chef Grant’s anatra al caffè which is a coffee-cured duck leg served with pan seared duck breast, homemade egg ravioli with wilted baby spinach and a coffee duck jus. “I love duck, and I wanted to create a dish that would bring out the best of the game-meat flavours while embracing traditional Italian cooking.” The soup options also include a signature dish, Pappa al Pomodoro - wood smoked tomato and pepper soup with celery ribbon, confit garlic and burnt onion dust. Talk about playing with flavours, will you!? And the verdict? With cool creds and a mind blowing new menu, we’d let this chef cook for us anytime – and you should too. NAUGHTY OR NICE?

We’ve rounded up our top naughty and nice wines, from sexy, boozy bottles to ones you’ll want to share with that special someone you want to cuddle up close with. It just wouldn’t be fun without either of them!

THE SOPHISTICATED SIP

WINEGASM IN A BOTTLE

Graham Beck Gorgeous Chardonnay Pinot Noir

De Toren Délicate 2018 BUDGET, MID-RANGE OR SPLURGE: R121 so mid-range.

BUDGET, MID-RANGE OR SPLURGE: Retailing at around R85 a bottle, it’s a budget to mid-range wine.

Where you can buy it: Available from the De Toren online wine cellar K www.de-toren.com

Where you can buy it: Any bottle store. Naughty or nice: It’s definitely nice with its attractive hue – vibrant pink with a copper tinge – and spicy, mineral-scented aromas of orange blossom, jasmine and pear followed by layers of mouth-filling raspberry cream, grapefruit, lime and honeydew melon flavours.

Naughty or nice: It’s a rather nice Malbecdominated wine. Naughty or nice story: I decided this wine is too good not to be shared. So, I set the table, lit the candles and prepared a three-course gourmet dinner for my husband and I. This is an extremely nice story, romantic and starryeyed, we thoroughly enjoyed the finesse of this red blend and the sensory pleasure of its elegant berry flavours.

Naughty or nice story: This gorgeous wine is vivacious and versatile, so I recently bought a few bottles when I was having my friends around for a ladies’ lunch one Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed it with some delightful summer salads and salmon (it would also pair beautifully with poultry, veal and cream-based dishes though) and had the leftovers as a refreshing aperitif the following weekend.

 THE PARTY STARTER Babylonstoren Chardonnay 2016 BUDGET, MID-RANGE OR SPLURGE: I usually buy it online for R249 a pop, so it’s a spoil but not quite a splurge. Where you can buy it: Online or bottle store. Naughty or nice: Don’t let the classy, sleek structure and subtle citrus fruit of this wine fool you! The textured creaminess, vanilla and nutty complexity with tangy mineral tones are so refreshing and moreish that it’s easy to finish two bottles over lunch. Naughty or nice story: Every time I go out for brunch or lunch with friends and we order this wine (it goes well with everything from eggs benedict to pasta – especially those served in a white wine sauce – and sushi), it puts us in a party mood. You know, the type that makes you want to keep on drinking until the sun goes down, and then hit the club! On the bright side, it’s been well worth the hangover every time. refreshing aperitif the following weekend.

THE DINNER PARTY SPICE Warwick First Lady 2015 BUDGET, MID-RANGE OR SPLURGE: Mid-range about R100 but label feels way more expensive which makes it my go to “gift” bottle. Always consistent. Where you can buy it: Any bottle store. Naughty or nice: Dangerous! Naughty or nice story: Two bottles recently consumed at a family dinner party found me sprouting forth heavy left-wing opinions at a table full of right-wing people. This all came to an end as I whacked the remnants of the second bottle off the table onto the white linen table-cloth. This did not impress the host. Dishes to pair with: there was lamb on the menu this particular evening but given the hysterics, I didn’t make the main meal.

Where you can buy it: Norman Goodfellows in Illovo.

Naughty or nice: Very, very naughty. Naughty or nice story: Rosé has been described as “romance in a bottle” and that’s what you can expect with this naughty little varietal. It’s naughty because it contains an alcohol content of only 12% so it goes down effortlessly. I popped open the bottle with my besty on TGIF and let’s just say the slight hangover was well worth it.

THE RESTAURATEUR

Milan Cerimaj

- The Fat Olive

You don't need a silver fork to eat good food - Prijatno! With an impressive career spanning over 37 restaurants, Milan Cerimaj’s story started in the Serbian village of Tulare, in pursuit of Pljeskavica. Unable to afford the signature Serbian burger, 11-year-old Milan approached the restaurant owner for a job in exchange for a burger…and so his colourful career began.

C

oming to South Africa the following year, Milan lied about his age to start waitering, and worked his way up to Executive Chef, with no formal training. Having worked in London at silver service restaurants as well as in Serbia, Milan’s heart was on South African soil, and upon his return, he tried his hand in the butchery business. Setting himself apart with his sexy, signature cuts such as the lollipop, fashioned from the beef short rib; it wasn’t long before Milan was supplying Joburg’s top restaurants. His passion persisted and garnering advice from his grandfather that only rice, coffee and cigarettes should come from a shop; and the rest should come from the farm, it is no surprise that Milan took over The Fat Olive Country Restaurant, turning it into an unforgettable farm to table experience for his guests.

BROOKLYN Tel 012 941 1277, brooklyn@signaturerestaurant.co.za 570 Fehrsen Street, Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn www.signaturerestaurant.co.za

He has his sights set on an Italian and a French restaurant, but March 2019 will see his Portuguese dream come alive as he opens Vela on Hartbeespoort Dam. Authentic and traditional, Milan will not compromise on his key ingredients of cleanliness, respect and passion and his greatest reward is guests coming back for his favourite dish, the linefish prepared on an open flame grill. Milan doesn't order to eat, but to socialise, and inspired by Rick Stein, he believes that simplicity can never be beaten, letting his food speak for itself… and we sure are listening. ENJOY THE PURPLE HAZE

We’ve rounded up the best leisure activities that let you take in the beauty of jacaranda season! Every year, during the months of October and November, a sea of purple petals from thousands of jacaranda trees bloom above the suburban streets and turn the city into a glowing purple haze. Trust us – it’s a sight you’ll want to take advantage of while it lasts!

Munro Drive is practically a monument in Houghton that takes you up one of the longest, steepest hills in the city. Halfway up is the lookout point that overlooks The Wilds Municipal Nature Reserve and offers some of the most magnificent views of the surrounding jacarandas. Grab that someone special and a bottle of bubbly and take a drive up at golden hour for an evening of romance. PS: this is also a great idea after a first date (if it went well, of course) – the make-out views simply don’t get more scenic than this! 4 Munro Drive, Houghton Estate

Mountain biking on the Braamfontein Spruit

The Braamfontein Spruit is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in the country. Why, you ask? For starters, it’s a greenbelt in the middle of a city. Plus, it’s 60km long – but don’t worry, it’s an easy to moderate level trail

40

Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

(still a next-level endurance ride nonetheless!). The trail starts in Melville Koppies AKA jacaranda central and runs all the way through to Paulshof. It also joins up with paths from various other points along the route, namely Albert’s Farm, Emmarentia, Delta Park, The Sandton Field and Study Centre in Parkmore, Sandton Field, Riverside and Bryanston Drive.

For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you ride in groups of at least four. Park at Marks Park Sports Club across Judith Road, Emmarentia and access from North Gate

Yoga and breakfast at Four Seasons Hotel - The Westcliff

An invigorating morning yoga session followed by an alfresco breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel - The Westcliff isn’t just a fabulous way to #treatyoself, but also to admire the jacarandas. Steven from Yoga Works gives the yoga class, which is followed by a healthy breakfast buffet – think fruits, juices,

smoothies, tea, coffee and snacks – that you can enjoy on the lawns. The next event is on 22 October 2018. Keep an eye on the Yoga Works Facebook page for other upcoming events. 67 Jan Smuts Avenue, Westcliff m 072 835 2525 E www.facebook.com/YogaWorksSA/

A stroll through James & Ethel Gray Park There are plentiful green spaces to enjoy a weekend stroll in Joburg, but when it comes to jacaranda sightseeing, there’s one place that has an edge on views and ambience – James & Ethel Gray Park. This lush, hilly park offers a spectacular view of the downtown skyline fringed by the Observatory Ridge. It’s a favourite spot for dog walking and to lay a picnic blanket (in which case you should make sure you load up on fresh fruit, cheeses, crackers and bread). Entrance at Edgewood Avenue, Melrose

OCTSOBER SOIRÉE Soberʼs never been so much fun

Joburg is packed with places for great drinks and a happening night-time vibe no doubt, but there are also some cool spots that will appeal to those friends who want to join in on the fun but might be having a sober October – or as some call it, a “Octsober”. This month we checked out some evening spots with more than just cool cocktail menus and a haze of stale smoke that will appeal to those very much drinking but also to those staying dry this month. Goliath Comedy Club & Roast Cafe The Orbit – Jazz Club & Bistro A restaurant by day, the venue at Melrose Arch turns into a comedy club at night with some of Jozi’s best talent doing the rounds. With comedians running the place themselves, it’s pretty safe to say they know what their customers want. Book a table with some mates, order a round of drinks or coffees and some graze and laugh the week’s woes away. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are when it all goes belly up (see what we did there?) Also, we highly recommend the cocktails and cake, together! Ease of engagement for the sober peeps: When there’s jokes for day, what else do you need? This really is fun with a beer in hand or not Melrose Arch, 10A, The High Street, High St, Johannesburg, 2196 m 010 020 3678 K www.goliathandgoliath.com

Beefcakes

A golden oldie on the party scene, Beefcakes mixes beautiful people, good food, drinks and entertainment into a neat, messy night out. Yes our use of oxymoron is intentional. It's dinner and a show – a fantastic drag one and it's ridiculous amounts of fun no matter the occasion. Ease of engagement for the sober peeps: This really will depend on the crowd. One could imagine that for the more conservative types, alcohol is in fact needed for such a loud outing, but if your mates are chilled and just out to have a good time, then who needs body shots anyway? If you crack the balance right, please let us know! Illovo Muse, 198 Oxford Rd, Illovo, Johannesburg, 2918 m 011 447 5266 K www.beefcakes.co.za

Probably the best spot for an evening of Jazz Music in Jozi, The Orbit boasts an impressive line-up of musos any given week. The drinks are reasonably priced and the venue is nice and cosy. It’s a great spot to really unwind but also re-connect with friends without the doof doof of a typical night spot. Ease of engagement for the sober peeps: Totally do-able. The setting is chilled and the music is easy on the ear so you’re unlikely going to feel the need to line up some shots and get your headbanging on 81 De Korte St, Braamfontein 53-Ir, Johannesburg, 2001 m 011 339 6645 K www.theorbit.co.za

Theatre on the Square

Most theatre-going peeps will arrive early for a show and settle in comfortably at the bar for a coffee or nice glass of wine. Dinner and a show has become early evening drinks and a show these days and it’s a great way to catch up with friends and inject some culture in your life while sipping on a glass of red wine or not. Ease of engagement for the sober peeps: Easy peasy, after all we’re going to see a show, not become the show. The Theatre foyer and bar instills this weird need to act the part (pun intended) so truth be told, anyone funneling the gin is going to be looked at funny. Poison

OF THE MONTH Bisquit V.S.O.P Cognac

About: Founded in 1819, the House of Bisquit Cognac was born in the heart of France, from the philosophy of one man - Alexandre Bisquit. He was no ordinary man; not content with the expected. He wanted to live an extraordinary life, so he chose to have faith in himself and to pursue life’s adventures. He travelled across China, Europe and Russia, gifting the taste of his unique Bisquit Cognac to artisans and admirers. The history of cognac cocktails: Many people believe that Cognac is a spirit that should be enjoyed neat with a few ice cubes and consider mixing it with other beverages a sin! However, this view could not be further from the truth. The use of Cognac in cocktails goes back as far as the early 1800’s when the cocktail was invented - it was known as a “barman’s best friend”. Back in those days, pioneering mixologists only had a choice between brandy, gin or whisky. Brandy, particularly French Cognac, was extremely sought-after in America, where the cocktail culture was born. In fact, Cognac was a signature ingredient in some of America’s first-ever classic cocktails like the Sidecar and the original Sazerac.

Bisquit Cognac is made with the spirit of sharing in mind. So, while the weather keeps getting warmer and a certain sense of celebration lingers in the air, we suggest sharing a bottle with your loved ones – trust us, it’s a party-starter.

THE BLUEBERRY SOUR Cour tesy of Blank Bar

❷ Why it makes the perfect cocktail: Bisquit Cognacs are well-known for their specific roundness and supple aromas, thanks to the hand-crafted distillation process. The aim is to create a crisp, refreshing cocktail that preserves the Bisquit Cognac aromas and has very few ingredients so as to allow anyone to be able to make it. Try one: Bisquit is available at leading retailers including Makro, Norman Goodfellows, Tops @ Spar and Takealot.com. Q @bisquitafrica D @bisquitafrica

arts&culture MATILDA the MUSICAL For those of us raised on author Roald Dahl’s wild world of wonder and possibility, the multi-awardwinning musical comes as a real treat this October to the Teatro stage at Montecasino. We’re not sure about you guys, but we really can’t wait!

Q

uiet and quirky Matilda Wormwood aged six-and-a-half (going on sixty) who uses telekinesis to deal with her mean parents is a genius with a strong sense of independence and justice. The kind of kid most of us would like to have been – superpowers and all. Despite her moronic parents’ disdain at the notion of girls being educated, Matilda bucks the system and finds solace in the public library where she disappears into her own world of stories and books and finally makes her way to school – where more crazy things happen like the time Principal Trunchbull made Bruce Bogtrotter eat an entire chocolate cake. Even we have a daily carb limit Principal T! Get a grip!

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied

The story is a side-splitting take on the old school David vs Goliath narrative as the formidable Matilda takes on the bullies of her world with a little magic, a whole lot of heart and a ton of laughs. The bad guys are about to learn a few lessons they won’t forget any times soon. It’s one of those classics that you have to see in your lifetime. This one can’t and shouldn’t be missed. And it’s as much a show for the grown-ups (if not more) as it is for the kids – after all, as Roald Dahl once said himself, a little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men. We couldn’t agree more! Note to moms and dads: We would advise not taking kids younger than six, as some parts of the story could be a little scary for the smaller ones.

As for the man behind who first told this tale, Roald Dahl (19161990) was the author of  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. He remains one of the world’s greatest storytellers and even has his own day - #Truestory. His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, published in 1961 was a huge hit and every subsequent book became a best-seller. Today, his stories are available in 61 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr Fox, and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s multi-awardwinning production of  Matilda The Musical. Trust us! Don’t miss this one! 17 October - 2 December Montecasino, 1 Montecasino Blvd, Fourways

Pieces from A Century of South African Art from the Sanlam Art Collection

WITS ART EXHIBITION

Johannesburg based photographer Sabelo Mlangeni’s Umlindelo wamaKholwa features a series of mostly black and white photographs that focus on two South African Zionist church communities. The prize-winning and internationally exhibited artist depict an understanding of the nuances and dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, separation, identification and objectification. His images are beautiful and haunting and offer a glimpse into a world that those outside the Zionist communist hardly see. It’s on till 28 October 2018. SANLAM CENTENNIAL ART EXHIBITION

If you’re only planning one arty outing for the whole year, then let a Centennial: A Century of South African Art from the Sanlam Art Collection, curated by Stefan Hundt, be it! Showcasing a rich history of SA’s art, Sanlam takes its corporate role in sustaining artists and their practice very seriously. Long before other corporates followed suit, Sanlam started its collection in 1965 with 12 pieces, growing the collection to more than 1,000 pieces of art. Works on display unearth three narratives; art production and practices of the time; how the artists dealt with the political issues of their time; and how artists engaged with social and economic issues. The exhibition is also an opportunity to learn the history of this country — from colonialism to apartheid and eventually freedom — and the future society envisioned for generations to come. The exhibition closes on14 December.

Kicking off on 11 October is Guy Ferrer’s FEU SACRÉ (SACRED FIRE). Guy Ferrer, French artist, painter and sculptor says this particular set of work speaks to his insatiable need to keep working. “The studio is my favourite place of life, the place where I feel anything is possible to live the adventures of form and colour, order and chaos, transcendence. And to experience some truths revealed by the work, on myself, on the nature of the world and the great mystery that surrounds everything” The exhibition is on until 3 November.

You don’t even need to travel fourteen hours to get there because just a sheer one and a half hours away is your first destination in Zambia, the sublime landscape of Victoria Falls. Then just a short drive and a ferry trip and you’ll arrive at your second destination in Botswana, Kuzuma Forest Nature Reserve. Prepare to be wowed by bounty and beauty. Just a short fiveminute walk from the majestic Victoria Falls lies this authentically charming African style hotel. Don’t expect frills and flamboyance but rather a truly traditional experience. You’ll be captivated by the allure of its authenticity as well as the colours and textures of the African décor and design. We highly appreciated the simple and romantic flair of the hotel with its 212 rooms and although our room was neither vast nor ostentatious we can guarantee you’ll hardly spend time in it. The rooms are comfortable and cosy and have a gorgeous view of the hotel’s gardens, rivers and walkways.

travel CHOBE Botswana Stay at Camp Kuzuma

Words Bianca Spinner Images Supplied

Park any woes at check-in because the minute you arrive at this spectacularly isolated camp, you’ll be spellbound by its laid-back loveliness and the towering giraffes feeding on grass. This is where you come to unwind and unravel, in a tucked away forest reserve; Camp Kuzuma is one unique African style safari experience.

54

A mere hour drive from Kasane airport, the camp is easily accessible, and a VIP shuttle service will arrive to collect you and take you to the five-star lodge. You might very well spot the big five on your way there because in Chobe the animals roam freely. Don’t forget to look out for the 208bird species that also inhabit the forest reserve. Once you arrive at this free-floating camp, which is magically lifted 1.5metres from the ground and has caused little disturbance to its natural surroundings you’ll smell wild basil and hear the calls of the grey-billed hornbill. The site sleeps only fourteen guests and the seven luxurious tented camps, all-alike, are exquisitely designed Hello Joburg • October September 2018 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za • Hellojoburg.co.za

with polished floors and gauzy mosquito nets adding to the dreamy ambience. And yes, assume the hyenas and leopards will warmly welcome you in the evenings as they move freely throughout the reserve. Once at the camp you’ll soon realise that the site promotes ecotourism and owners Stefan du Plessis and Rudy Visser take plastic and water wastage extremely seriously. It is rather inspiring that in the middle of the reserve this eco-friendly slice of paradise exists. The totally green camp operates off the grid completely, has its own vegetable patch and a zero-plastic policy. Meals are served alongside the watering hole with a titanic view of the bush and its picturesque surroundings. Fortunately, we saw herds of elephants on a daily basis, so you’re almost guaranteed this sighting whilst nibbling on your decadent breakfast buffet, served on a long wooden table piled with homemade yoghurt, freshly picked fruits, and homemade bread. This reserve is home to hundreds of elephants and the location in the Chobe corridor is one of the largest elephant migratory routes in the world!

We have to mention that the dining experience at the camp is an abundance of delight with no shortage of mouth-watering dishes. Let’s just say the food alone is reason enough to visit and, in the evening, whilst you dine in the boma underneath the stars, you won’t believe the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Also, it is important to note that all dietary requirements will be met, nothing is too farreaching for the chef, who clearly possesses a passion for food and a love for entertaining. From salmon soufflé and raspberry pana cotta spheres to braaied mielies, salted caramel popcorn crème brulee, homemade gluten-free garlic bread, and the finest Tomahawk steak you’ll ever feast on - you name it, they’ve perfected it. Above this, there are many aspects of this camp that you will come to love. One word to describe the service is excellent, enhancing this memorable experience and its nature as it intended to be, good for the soul and spirit.

Smart planning

AND CONSISTENT MONITORING The key to expo success

I

t goes without saying that any stand at an exhibition is only as effective as the amount of work the brand itself puts behind it. A traditional above-the-line advertisement is easy to place, with minimal direct intervention other than responding to inquiries. An investment in an exhibition stand, on the other hand, calls for more than just money – it requires a lot of thought, time and effort. Use these tips to ensure you get the most bang for your buck! Planning Activating a great stand at a major trade exhibition like the Rand Show involves much more time than the ten days over which the show runs. To achieve the most out of your stand, you need to dedicate some time for thorough planning. This strategic phase is where you set out the business objective, conduct a location recon, allocate resources, plan logistics and material, and define your measurement criteria and follow-up steps. People While ‘booth babes’ might attract (some) visitors to the stand, the people who will keep customers engaged and sell them products are knowledgeable experts. Stands manned by skilled company employees are more effective in expressing the brand culture and company values, and in moving stock.

56

Hello Joburg • October 2018 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Pitching and Measurement It is vital to set out a daily measure of your stand’s success, along with an intervention process should it be falling short. More than likely, success is driven by a clear concise message. A visitor who’s gone to the trouble of travelling to the festival, finding parking and walking to your stand is more likely to buy from you than someone seeing an ad in the newspaper or TV, so make sure to get your pitch right ahead of time. Measurement can vary from penetrating a new segment to increasing sales, but this needs to be monitored closely throughout the campaign. Follow-up Unfortunately, too many exhibitors take visitor details and fail to follow up once the show is over. When a visitor leaves their contact details and asks for more information, this is a great opportunity to not only close a sale but to establish a relationship – and possibly a lifelong brand advocate. Make sure that every lead generated during the show is followed through, preferably by the same person who made the initial contact. 1 www.randshow.co.za BOOK Exhibitor bookings for the 2019 Rand Show are well ahead of target, with over 90% of 2018 exhibitors showing a strong interest to return after the 2018 Show yielded exceptional results for them. Make sure to book your spot for 2019 to ensure you don’t miss out

Words and Images Supplied by the Rand Show

While exhibiting at a major trade show can potentially yield positive returns for a consumer brand, products won’t simply fly off the shelves without intensive planning. Johnny Malherbe, show manager at the Rand Show, explains how exhibitors can gain the most of their investment, not just at the Rand Show, but at any exhibition!

VAN DER BURGH Tell us an interesting fact about yourself ?  I have a huge passion for finance and the markets. What inspired your love for swimming?  The ability to be free from gravity. I always wanted to fly as a child and being in the water meant I could “Fly” through the water and be weightless.  What would we find on your bedside table?  A digital version of the Financial Times.  Do you have any pre-race rituals?  I always flex my pecks. It helps me to remind myself to have fun and laugh a little in highpressure situations. What do you do to de-stress?  I read or study new topics. I love learning and it takes me away from my current worries in the world.

Take us through a typical training session?  Around 10km of swimming in a day followed by two-hour gym session.  What’s your go-to breakfast?  I don’t eat breakfast. I intermittently fast until lunch. Then I go wild and catch up all my calories.  The last thing you googled?  How to clean a wooden deck. We luckily have had a lot of rain and my deck is getting a bit mouldy! Your top 3 health and fitness tips?  Eat well, exercise daily and keep your mind active by learning new things constantly.  Q @cameronvdburgh 1 @Cameronvdburgh

Cameron van der Burgh grew up in a world of make-believe with an overactive imagination and a busy, busy mind. He couldn’t sit still for long and recalls his biggest punishment as being sent to his room on a timeout. He was like many other boys his age but Cameron’s diagnosis with ADD thankfully came with an alternative treatment to brain-altering drugs: swimming. What was meant to calm him down and give his brain something else to concentrate on, became the biggest catalyst for the life of a World Champion, a Commonwealth Champion, and an Olympic Champion. This year, Cameron swam his final laps at a Commonwealth Games and explained his 50m win over Adam Peaty as the most emotionally memorable of all his swims.
