ELLO JOBURGERS!
Finally… Summer has arrived! Well, October is technically Spring but with this amazing weather we’ve been having, one can’t be blamed for thinking that spring was just a two week season. Us Joburgers are extremely lucky to live in such an amazing city with one of the best climates in the world! The warm days and cool nights allow for an alfresco style of living and with such a variety of things to do in the city, one should be busy and active every night of the week. Whether you’re a theatre lover or not, I would recommend you head down to Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein as they have a startling performance starting on the 1st of October called Boys In The Band. This Australian based show celebrates the world’s greatest hits from the most iconic boy bands. The show is guaranteed to keep you on your feet, singing along with great hits from The Beech Boys to The Jackson Five. See pages 8 & 9 for more info on the show. If innovative and interesting food is your thing, then you need to gaze through to page thirteen where Bianca Maletsky, one of our foodies had the opportunity to visit Protea Hotel Fire & Ice in Melrose Arch and taste their new Burgers & Milkshakes. With names like ‘Bakkies Wors Burger’ and ‘Stars & Stripes Southern Fried Chicken Burger’, you are guaranteed not to be disappointed. Another restaurant that I can highly recommend is Teta Mari in Illovo. This tremendous, family run establishment offers a unique dining experience. From the traditional ‘Bobba’s Chicken Soup’ with matzo balls to my personal, all time favorite, the New York style ‘Reuben Special’. This mouth-watering sandwich consists of brisket on rye with their famous sweet mustard sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickled cucumber, emmenthal cheese and sauerkrout. Winner!! Finally, if you’re looking for something special and enjoyable to do in Jozi then you need to be at Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday 30th of November 2013 to be a part of the glitz and glamour of the Sansui Summer Cup. This annual horseracing event is one of the major highlights on the Joburg events calendar. With the theme of ‘Colour to Conquer’, you best be sure to dress to impress. I hope that I have given you all sufficient ideas to enjoy this remarkable weather and explore the beautiful, vibrant city of Jozi! #lovejozi

NEW PIATTO OPEN IN BENMORE Now A Place To Live Life The Way It’s Meant To Be Lived, In The Heart Of Sandton
T
he recently opened Piatto in the Benmore Gardens Shopping Centre features a new look to compliment the restaurant’s reputation for superb dining and a joyful approach to life. Piatto Benmore, which opened its doors in July 2013, is situated upstairs in the shopping centre.
“THE FRESH NEW DESIGN FEATURES A SIGNATURE COPPER CLAD PIZZA OVEN” The fresh new design features a signature copper clad pizza oven which catches your eye as soon as you enter the store. The store incorporates both a downstairs and upstairs area, an outside area for al fresco dining, as well as an inviting sushi bar. The organic and lively ambience of the restaurant has been achieved through the use of warm, inviting wood, splashes of vibrant colour and copper accents throughout the store. Owners Panos Comninos and Michael Yiallouris have the strong backing of the Piatto franchise and a combined experience of 55 years
in the food business. The Piatto brand was born out of an infectious passion for life, a desire for superb dining and a celebration of joie de vivre; a comprehensive joy for all things good and unforgettable.
“TIME HONOURED TRADITION OF HOSPITALITY EVOKES A SENSE OF WARMTH AND FRIENDSHIP” Piatto means “plate” in Greek and Italian. The Piatto experience is one of variety, combining delicious food, excellent service and a beautiful ambience, best-suited for a relaxed and laid-back dining experience. It caters for any occasion and age group, whether it is pre dinner drinks, a family gathering, a business meeting or a special occasion. As well as the corporate sector, Piatto is a favourite destination of choice for families with children, who are well-catered for with a comprehensive Kiddies’ Menu. “Images of bread, oil and wine conjure up a mouth watering feast of Mediterranean flavours and the time honoured tradition of hospitality evokes a sense of warmth and friendship that is difficult to match
anywhere in the world. Mamma always knew that the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, and she always said, “never change a winning recipe,” says Michael Yiallouris, who owns the Piatto franchise.
“THE NEW LOOKSTORE FEATURES POPS OF BRIGHT RED AND SLOGANS TO REMIND PATRONS ABOUT THE WAY LIFE’S MEANT TO BE LIVED” Michael has always enjoyed spending time in the kitchen. For Piatto, he created meals using centuries-old family techniques of full-flavoured, textured slow cooking and marinating, which have been handed down through generations. “The hospitality you can expect at Piatto restaurants is reminiscent of an age when hospitality meant that the greeting was warm and the company was great. The food is beyond comparison and the atmosphere keeps bringing you back. Out of this passion, the first store was opened in Eastgate shopping centre in 2001 and has since expanded to
17 successful branches throughout Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal and Northwest Province. Our menu offers combinations of Portuguese, Italian and Greek cuisine, as well as traditional South African favourites - oxtail, curries, snail starters and T-bone steaks. It’s all about flexibility and choice,” says Michael. Piatto’s distinct ambience has been achieved through a combination of a strong emphasis on beautiful interior design, soft lighting, space, gracious hosting and of course, a delectable menu. The new-look store features pops of bright red and slogans to remind patrons about the way life’s meant to be lived – Piatto’s brand promise. This proudly South African brand has managed to build up a loyal following of patrons and there is no doubt that the new Piatto in the heart of Sandton, Benmore Gardens Shopping Centre, will bring more fans of innovative cuisine rooted in traditional goodness.

PROTEA HOTEL FIRE & ICE Style. Service. Panache.
P
rotea Hotels is Africa’s largest and leading hotel group and has a footprint of more than 125 properties throughout South Africa and nine other African countries, including Zambia, Nigeria, Namibia, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya amongst others. Each hotel is uniquely different in character and the collection ranges from urban accommodation to country retreats, all in the 3 and 4-star market. We had the wonderful opportunity of visiting the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice situated in the prime location that is Melrose Arch.
“PROTEA HOTELS IS AFRICA’S LARGEST AND LEADING HOTEL GROUP” Style. Service. Panache. The Fire & Ice Hotel is up there with the very best hotels. It is a hotel in the obvious sense but it is also so much more than that. The décor and design lends to the stylishness and flair of the hotel. It is very inviting, welcoming whilst still attractive and dashing. It helps that the hotels intention is for the guest to feel pampered and respected whilst still allured by the aesthetics: “It’s just another day in the life of a Hollywood mega superstar. With the magnetism of a young Brando, the vivacious allure Marilyn became famous for, and the illustrious, scatter-brained Holly Golightly’s eccentric charm, this is one hotel with glamour.”
“STYLE. SERVICE. PANACHE.”
The 197 rooms are luxurious and spacious and the luxury suites are ultra modern. You wander through the gorgeous lounge area, to a grand bathroom and enjoy the lifestyle of a modern-day man. The hotel boasts a breathtaking swimming pool area with prevailing loungers and waiters whom tend to your every wish. There is also a Fitness Centre, conference facilities, WI-FI, and the most divine dining area with a highly fashionable bar region. On stunning spring evenings it’s the perfect setting for a night out on the town, cocktails with girlfriends or even a romantic dinner for two.
“IT IS VERY INVITING, WELCOMING” Accommodating the beautiful restaurant is the remarkable food. Protea Hotel Fire & Ice have launched a range of burgers specially designed to fire up the heart, soul and belly. The hotel has always been famous for its gourmet burgers, however the chefs have really put in the sweat and swelter and have come up with some of the best tasting burgers in Jozi. In August all eyes and stomachs were on the US of A, where Uncle Sam’s kitchen helpers add some spice to the Stars and Stripes Southern Fried Chicken Burger. Just the name sounds delicious. We tried the Fried Chicken Burger drizzled with a sour cream relish, topped with fresh tomatoes and crunchy lettuce, with a side serving of French fries. It certainly didn’t take long to devour such a delight. And just launched is the ingenious Bakkies Wors Burger. The tummy-rumbling South African delicacy is authentic and traditional and will wet your appetite. It is made with the juiciest boerewors mince
served with deep fried mustard-coated onion rings. Just wonderful.
“IT’S THE PERFECT SETTING FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN” But no burger is complete without its lifelong buddy, the milkshake. Luckily for us, the hotel makes the richest, most innovative and decadent milkshakes you will ever taste. We attempted to gulp the giant sized pumpkin, marshmallow and caramel milkshake! Yummy! Worth every calorie. We also tasted the ‘Ouma and Oupa’ Rooibos infused `honey Milkshake which is an absolute favorite. You even start envisioning yourself sitting on the stoep waiting for the first signs of spring with cups of warm rooibos and honey. Another
popular shake is ‘Carnival Time’ which is inspired by the celebration of the return of spring, and what better way to distil it in a glass than with flavors of toffee apples and creamy homemade fudge. The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice really have outdone themselves, their origination, modernization and creativity of the hotel as well as in the restaurant is paramount. What’s not to love: tremendous location, friendly service, beautiful design and first-class, innovative food. It’s a smart move to choose to stay at this hotel. dentified as the seventh most frequently requested Liqueur Amarula is the only South African brand to make it on to the list of the world’s top 100 premium spirits brands in terms of volumes sold, according to Impact Databank, a US-based company that is a leading source for drinks statistics and analysis. The list features brands that sell in excess of a million 9-litre cases annually. Placed in 81st position, it has also taken the 36th spot on the recently published IWSR list of the most popular spirits brands sold globally in travel retail (i.e. the duty-free channel). At the beginning of 2013, Amarula was identified as the seventh most frequently requested liqueur amongst the world’s top style bars by Drinks International. Additionally, locally, it was ranked amongst the top ten spirits brands in the Sunday Times Top Brands survey published last month. Global marketing spokesperson Siobhan Thompson said that what gave
Amarula the edge in an intensely competitive global market was the unique flavour, derived from the tangy marula fruits harvested at the height of summer from trees indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa. She said the brand, distributed to over 100 countries worldwide, was also distinctive for its immediate association with Africa and elephants, highlighted in much of the brand’s marketing.
011 447 0669 Corner 12th Street and 4th Ave, Parkhurst
“The authenticity of Amarula’s origins, its romantically exotic provenance and the fact that marulas are loved by elephants and other animals of the wild, lend it a very special allure.” One of the most effective ways of building custom is through sampling, she confirmed. “The brand has an extremely high trial-to-conversion ratio. Once people are introduced to it, they also find it to be extremely versatile. People enjoy it as an affordable indulgence to wind down or at parties or clubs. It also is a great way to end a meal, served with or even as dessert.”
Titled the new favourite place for pizza. The restaurant is small and intimate compared to the Illovo branch, but the food is just as flavorsome made with passion and perfection. Hello Johannesburg October 2013 www.hellojoburg.co.za

On the healthy side the ‘Marak Adashim’ which is a lentil soup with chili, garlic and coriander is well-liked and an absolute must try is Bobbas Chicken soup, filled with goodness, integrity and sustenance. And you can even add a matzo ball or perogen to the soup. Accompanying them are the salads, which are bursting with zest and tang. The

EDITORS CHOICE: FINE WINES A SELECTION OF FINE WINES TO ACCOMPANY ANY MEAL ZONNEBLOEM REACHES ZENITH AT 2013 NEDERBURG AUCTION One of the highest prices fetched at this year’s Nederburg Auction was for a 40-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon from Zonnebloem. The threebottle case went to a buyer from Nigeria for R22 000, translating into a per bottle price of R7 333,33.
esteem in which Zonnebloem is held by collectors. “Zonnebloem is a brand that commands great respect and is widely recognised for crafting contemporary classics. Taking our cue from our predecessors, today’s team is making wines for enjoyment now but styling them for longevity so that future aficionados will also be able to experience current vintage wines many decades from now.”
With a reserve price of just R1 500 for the three, bidding was brisk for the sought-after wine, attracting interest from local and international buyers. Two years ago, a six-bottle case of Zonnebloem’s 1971 Cabernet Sauvignon fetched R10 000, as did a 1974 Zonnebloem Shiraz. Zonnebloem cellarmaster, Deon Boshoff, said this year’s price was a clear reflection of the growing NEDERBURG SUCCUMBS TO LONDON SHOWERS Nederburg has been showered in medals awarded by the 2013 International Wine & Spirit (IWSC) Competition, winning three gold outstanding, five gold and 10 silver outstanding medals, as well as 15 silvers for wines across its multitiered range. The results were announced at The Beautiful South, an inaugural wine show in London, featuring wines from South Africa, Argentina and Chile.

All IWSC entries are tasted blind. To earn gold, a wine must achieve a score of at least 90, while gold outstanding medals are conferred by the judges for exceptional gold winners. Nederburg’s gold outstanding medals went to two wines sold exclusively on the Nederburg Auction: the 2007 Private Bin Edelkeur and the 2008 Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the Solera Potstilled Brandy, sold by selected stockists countrywide. Amongst the gold winners were both the 2011 and 2012 Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest. The 2012 vintage of this wine was the
only South African trophy winner at this year’s International Sweet Wine Challenge, held in Riverina, Australia earlier this month (September). The 2011 and earlier vintages of this wine have been consistently ranked five stars in the Platter’s South African Wine Guide. All other IWSC golds went to wines reserved for auction. Silver outstanding IWSC medals go to wines narrowly missing gold. These were equally divided this year amongst Nederburg’s auction and other wines available on the open market. These include the 2010 vintage of The Motorcycle Marvel from the gourmet Heritage Heroes range; the 2011 Ingenuity White that is also a five-star Platter wine; as well as three wines from the popular Winemaster’s Reserve range: the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2012 vintages of the Riesling and Special Late Harvest. Apart from auction wines, silvers went to a selection of Winemaster’s Reserve and Heritage Heroes wines, as well as the 2010 Ingenuity Red. At the end of last year, Nederburg was named the 2012 IWSC SA Wine Producer of the Year.

ANNUAL MAYORAL CHARITY GOLF DAY RAISED OVER A MILLION RAND FOR HIV/AIDS CHARITIES

one from each Region of the City,” explains the Mayor.
uring these tough economic times and the global financial downturn we are seeing many NGO’s suffer as funding from international donors begins to dry up. In a drive to raise funds for the Johannesburg Mayoral Aids Fund that supports various HIV/Aids-related charities and organisations, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is hosting its annual Mayoral Charity Golf Day this Friday, 30 August at the Houghton Golf Club. The event will be hosted by the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Clr Mpho Parks Tau, who says, “This is the 9th Mayoral Golf Day. The event presents a perfect opportunity for Joburg’s businesses and civil society to join in the war against the Aids pandemic.” The Mayoral Aids Fund is a conduit through which contributions and donations are distributed to those in need, such as orphans, the elderly, child-headed households and NGO’s dealing with people who are affected and infected with HIV/Aids. “Our goal remains that of seeking to change behaviour, and mitigate circumstances and conditions of those affected and infected,” says Clr Tau.

CLICHÉS
The funds raised at last year’s golf day will be handed to the beneficiaries at a dinner on Friday evening, after the golf day. Beneficiaries are selected based on their needs, by a committee consisting of the seven Regional Offices of the CoJ. “We requested each of the Regions to identify three potential beneficiaries, of which the committee chose
Beneficiaries selected include Philisa Isizwe Foundation, Family Worship Centre Hospice, Thusano Home-based-care Centre, Bethesda Caregivers, Gladmag, Khanyisani Home Based Care, and Hospital Hill Community Project. The Mayoral Aids Fund was established in 2005 to generate funds to support community programmes and projects for vulnerable groups, thereby improving the lives of people infected and affected with HIV/Aids. Since then, the Mayoral Golf Day has raised over R10 million for beneficiaries. This initiative is supported by the Johannesburg Aids Council (JAC). JAC, similar to the national and provincial Aids Councils, was established in November 2001 to advise the City on Aids-related issues and campaigns, and to mobilise communities to support fund-raising and awareness programmes.
In the last few years South Africa has become home to the world’s biggest programme of HIV prevention and ARV treatment, ensuring greater awareness, fighting stigma and discrimination, and upholding the rights of individuals infected. The Mayor says the City is an avid advocate for this broader HIV/Aids campaign. “We care deeply about our citizens, and with the Mayoral Golf Day the City visibly demonstrates its support in fighting this disease,” he says.

“Our tagline is ‘outsource your social life,’ as we essentially do the organising for people who are too busy to do it themselves, but who still want to meet interesting people and discover new activities and places,” explains Leal. “Unlike Internet dating, which has been successful in terms of numbers, it’s not successful in actually connecting like-minded people. Also, with internet dating and speed dating there is a connotation of desperation, which is partly why these models haven’t worked.” Meet Joburg, however, has a remarkable 70% success rate, says Suzette, in terms of forming relationships – which are either romantic, platonic, or business-oriented. Either way, these relationships are enhancing people’s lives and allowing them to feel intimately connected and part of a community. Suzette and co-founder Matilda Loots have replicated their model to form Meet Gayburg and Meet Gay Town, both of which they have sold 49% stakes in. Meet Durban and Meet Cape Town are also currently being developed into franchises. The business partners, who are also longtime friends from their university days, also plan to start new divisions in the company
in the form of Meet Miniburg, Meet Teenburg, Meet Mini Town and Meet Teen Town – platforms which will allow young children and teenagers to connect in Joburg and Cape Town. “This platform is not just onedimensional,” adds Leal. “It fulfils a number of societal needs and desires – whether they be for friendship, romance, socialising, seeing new parts of your city, or simply to have a good time.” Previous events include a party held inside a converted prison, river rafting, moonlight picnics, limo party, Halloween party, go-karting, bungee jumping, theme dinners , cooking classes and sushi-making evenings. “For thrill seekers, food lovers and adventurous spirits, there will be no shortage of options once you are part of our network,” says Mathilda Loots. “We invite anyone to join and become involved in this growing community!” To become a member, visit: www.meetjoburg.co.za and complete the application process. SANSUI SUMMER CUP Dress in “Colour to Conquer”
J
ohannesburg’s premier equestrian and fashion affair, the sensational SANSUI Summer Cup, proudly hosted by Gauteng, will be more stylish than ever in 2013. The SANSUI Summer Cup is the power, the pace and the pulse of an esteemed legacy of thoroughbred horse racing in Johannesburg which began in 1887. It is a premiere fashion and horse racing event in which the entertainment industry embraces the hustle and bustle of the Golden Region, translating into the galloping hooves of the horses igniting the city’s rhythm and beat. At a dazzling event held on 17th September at 03 Desmond, Kramerville in Sandton, SANSUI Summer Cup launched its campaign and announced its fashion theme for 2013: “Colour to Conquer”. It also introduced its first-ever “Face of SANSUI Summer Cup”, the elegant radio and television presenter and producer Azania Mosaka. Azania Mosaka describes this inaugural collaboration as thrilling. “The SANSUI Summer Cup is everything a stylish day at the races should be, I’m delighted to be the ambassador of this prestigious event and really look forward to “Colour to Conquer” in this powerful expression of stand-out style and glorious colour.” Jane Esterhuizen, Group Marketing Executive of SANSUI in South Africa says: “The SANSUI Summer Cup reflects the qualities that SANSUI, as a globally recognised consumer electronics brand, is known for: quality, aspiration and credibility.” “Gauteng is the home of the SANSUI Summer Cup since the early days of gold discovery in the region. We are a region that aims for pole position in everything that we do and being associated with such a

prestigious event further enhances our standing as the fun, glitz and glamour capital of Africa”, explains Barba Gaoganediwe, spokesperson for Gauteng Tourism.
SANSUI Summer Cup takes place at the Turffontein Racecourse on Saturday, 30 November 2013. This sensational event is stepping up the style stakes by awarding best-dressed honours in four chic categories: BestDressed Woman, Best-Dressed Man, Most Stylish Couple and the Most Striking Hat. The gifted and gorgeous Azania Mosaka will lead the fashion forward in an outfit by official designer of the SANSUI Summer Cup, JJ Schoeman. “For fashion, “Colour to Conquer” is epic,” says esteemed South African women’s wear designer JJ Schoeman. “It’s a dare to be different, step out in full-colour and be brave, bright and beautiful.” “Wearing a hat on race day is a fitting tribute to the sport of kings,” says Dominik Marszalek, Director of The Little Hattery, milliner for SANSUI Summer Cup. “A hat completes your look from head to toe on race day and is sure to grab the attention of the fashion judges.” Adding just the right amount of sparkle to race day is an art that will be overseen with the craftsmanship of Jenna Clifford, designer of bespoke jewellery. “Jewellery is a powerful form of expression. It reflects the personality, taste and even spirituality of the wearer. It’s invaluable when creating a signature style for a beautiful day at the races,” says Clifford. As South Africa’s premier handcrafted jewellery brand, Jenna Clifford is official jeweller to SANSUI Summer Cup. Catch the season’s latest looks and splendid designs on the race day catwalk at the must-see fashion shows from leading names including

JJ Schoeman, The Little Hattery and Jenna Clifford, Europa Art Shoes, as well as original fashion designed to the “Colour to Conquer” campaign from various young fashion designers. Gauteng will also delight the style set with a fashion show including the designs of David Tlale, among others. Luxury Italian footwear brand, Europa Art Shoes, is our newest partner to the SANSUI Summer Cup – making the expression of sophisticated style easily accessible. And we also welcome on board, The Make-Up Issue, our newest partner providing hair and make-up and Jo Malone, official perfume partner. Michael Varney of Phumelela Gaming & Leisure says, “The SANSUI Summer Cup epitomises the quality and proud heritage of thoroughbred horse racing in Johannesburg. The 2013 campaign captures all the excitement and high stakes that makes the SANSUI Summer Cup a defining event on the national racing
calendar.” With a day and night 12 races affair, the exhilarating main event features top thoroughbreds challenging one another over 2,200 metres for a staggering stake of R2 million. But it isn’t only the thoroughbreds who will run against one another. Racing for charity, 25 celebrities will take to the racecourse in the HiFi Corp Charity Dash, a heated sprint to raise funds for the event’s official charity Rainbows and Smiles – a non-profit organisation providing support to families and caregivers of children diagnosed with cancer. Then there’s the famous “Mo-Kini Sprint”, when some of South Africa’s hottest men swap their kit for “mankinis” in a cheeky dash to do good and raise awareness for Movember SA. STER-KINEKOR GOES DIGITAL Great experiences just got greater
Y
es Ster Kinekor has managed to do it again! Keeping contemporary and current, remaining modern and innovative, they have decided to launch the Ster Kinekor Digital Cinema. Ster-Kinekor Theatres have announced the complete digital conversion of all its screens across South Africa. A deal with Arts Alliance Media will see Ster-Kinekor’s estate of more than 400 screens converted to digital within the next 12 months.
“STER-KINEKOR ESTATE OF MORE THAN 400 SCREENS CONVERTED TO DIGITAL WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS” Chief Executive Officer of SterKinekor Theatres, Fiaz Mahomed, said, “Converting to digital is a critical step in the progression of SterKinekor Theatres as we continue to grow our business and continue to lead South Africa’s movie exhibition industry. It is also critical in meeting the very real demand from our valued audiences in seeing the best content on offer in an all-consuming, all entertaining environment. This is an evolving sector and we are com
mitted to continuously improving the consumer experience.”
“THE DIGITAL CINEMA EXPERIENCE IS MORE EFFICIENT AND PROFICIENT AND ALLOWS FOR MORE 3D CONTENT” What is digital cinema you ask? Well for as long back as you can remember movies have been displayed via show reels. ‘A film is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to phi phenomenon. A film is created by photographing actual scenes with a motion picture camera; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation.’ Films were originally recorded onto plastic film, which was shown through a movie projector onto a large screen. The digital cinema experience is more efficient and proficient and allows for more 3D content being screened, superior picture quality, new genres of film content and closer alignment of local release dates with international ones. Accompanied with all the above info, the Hello Joburg team got the opportunity to experience the digital cinema for the very first time, at the fabulous Cine Prestige–The ultimate
movie experience, Rosebank, the Zone. We felt very spoiled and intended to take full gain from this occasion. First we chose our treats, however these were not just your average popcorn and smarties. At the prestige you can order real food, you can order platters of snacks or sushi and enjoy a glass of wine with it. It’s essentially about watching a movie in style.
“AT THE PRESTIGE YOU CAN ORDER REAL FOOD, YOU CAN ORDER PLATTERS OF SNACKS OR SUSHI AND ENJOY A GLASS OF WINE WITH IT” Moreover the huge comfortable recliners are heavenly. You can lie down, bring a blanket and watch your movie and even feel like royalty. The chairs are a vast improvement from the normal seating and the regal feel of the cinema creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. Nothing says luxury quite like a relaxed night out where you can put your feet up and have a satisfied belly. Now enough about the aesthetics lets dissect the actual movie watching experience. As previously stated, the projectors in the digital cinema
have been replaced. As well as this Ster-Kinekor is also installing new speakers and audio systems. Every cinema will have Dolby 5.1 surround sound as a minimum and the difference is paramount. The sound is crystal clear you can even hear the sound overhead; it really engulfs the entire cinema and draws you even closer into the film. Although we watched “We’re the Millers” which isn’t exactly a combat, action packed film, the sound and picture quality were still vibrant and well defined. The film “We’re the Millers” Amazingly enough, despite being very stupid, is great, light hearted fun. It’s a genuinely funny comedy. Maybe that has a lot to do with the lead actor, Jason Sudeikis who is brilliantly ridiculous and ludicrous as a drug dealer who is forced to appease a crime of kingpin. (Ed Helms) The leading lady is Americas Sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston, who isn’t such a sweetheart in this film; instead she plays an edgy stripper, and a very beguiling stripper we might add. Together, creating a fake family with their two fake kids (Emma Roberts, Will Poulter) take a trip through Mexico to smuggle drugs. The new Ster Kinekor Digital Cinema (especially the Cine-Prestige) is officially our favorite cinema in Joburg. What a pleasure! What a luxury! By: Bianca Maletsky www.sterkinekor.com
